How to design meetings with purpose so they actually move work forward.Meetings are a necessary part of work. But for many people, they're also a major source of frustration. According to Rebecca Hinds, meetings don't have to feel like a drain—better meetings start when we stop treating them as a default and start designing them with intention.Hinds is the author of Your Best Meeting Ever: Seven Principles for Designing Meetings That Get Things Done, and a future-of-work expert who founded the Work Innovation Lab at Asana and the Work AI Institute at Glean. She argues that the problem isn't meetings themselves, but the sheer number of poorly designed ones, and by being more thoughtful about what actually deserves synchronous time, teams can redesign how they communicate in the workplace “Meetings are the most important product in our entire organization, and yet they're also the least optimized,” she says. “The first step is recognizing we need to be much more intentional about how we're designing meetings.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Hinds and host Matt Abrahams discuss why meetings so often go wrong—and what it takes to make them work. Whether you're leading a team, trying to protect focus time, or simply hoping to spend less of your week in calendar invites, Hinds offers practical frameworks for designing meetings with purpose so they become a tool people actually value. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Rebecca HindsRebecca's Book: Your Best Meeting EverEp.124 Making Meetings Meaningful Pt. 1: How to Structure and Organize More Effective Gatherings Ep.125 Making Meetings Meaningful Pt. 2: Key Ingredients for Effective Meetings Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (01:42) - Why Meetings Feel Broken (02:57) - The Default-To-Meeting Problem (03:50) - Treat Meetings Like A Product (05:10) - Meeting Doomsday Reset (06:40) - The 4-DCEO Test (08:43) - Designing Better Meetings (10:05) - Creating a Meeting Agenda (12:58) - Context And Meeting Fatigue (14:06) - Memo-First Meetings (16:11) - The Final Three Questions (21:02) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors.  These partnerships support the ongoing production of the podcast, allowing us to bring it to you at no cost. This episode is sponsored by Strawberry.me. Discover Your Unique Design How to Maximize Your Talents and Stop Living Someone Else's Life

    Right-Side Up Leadership Podcast

You can never be them. They can never be you. So stop trying. In a culture obsessed with comparison and counterfeits, most leaders spend their entire lives trying to become someone else. They look at other leaders and think, "How do they do that?" They scroll through feeds, compare themselves to the competition, and slowly lose sight of the one thing that makes them irreplaceable: their unique design. Here's the truth: God put you on this earth with a unique spiritual, practical, relational, and emotional fingerprint. You are uniquely designed for impact. But if you don't understand your design, you'll spend your life getting lived by your circumstances instead of actively living with purpose and agency. In this episode, we're diving into the fourth sphere of an H2 Leader: Design. This is about how you maximize your talents and abilities—not by copying someone else's playbook, but by discovering and unleashing what you're uniquely wired to do. What You'll Learn: Why most people are getting lived by their lives instead of actively living them—and the main reason they don't have agency The difference between form (spark, beauty, passion) and function (usefulness, practicality, value) Why focusing only on passion is incomplete—and why we need to talk more about purpose and usefulness The IKEA principle: how form without function (or function without form) leads to unfulfilling work How to design your life like a designer by balancing what energizes you with what serves others The power of asking "How can I be of value?" instead of "Here's what I'm bringing" Why understanding your design is the key to preventing burnout (not just working less) How to identify the environments where you thrive—and why this matters more than you think The myth that you'll figure this out at 22—and why design clarity comes over time as form and function converge Real stories: the leader doing world-changing work who was intimidated by a simple board retreat (because it's not his design) Why one organization has a literal waiting list of people wanting to join their team—and what that says about leadership below the surface The connection between self-awareness (last week's episode) and design—you can't understand your design without self-awareness first Key Insight: Most leaders don't know their design, so they try to live someone else's. But when you understand your unique design—your strengths, your environments, your spark and your function—you stop wasting energy trying to be someone you're not. You unleash what only you can bring to the world. Design isn't just about doing what you love. It's about the convergence of what energizes you (form/spark) and what serves others (function/usefulness). When those two come together, you become irreplaceable. The Form + Function Framework: Form (Spark): What makes you come alive? What environments fire you up? What work do you wake up wanting to do? Function (Usefulness): How can you be valuable? What needs do you uniquely meet? Where can you serve? When form and function overlap—that's your design. That's where you thrive. Reflection Questions: In what area of your life or leadership have you lost the spark—and what would it look like to tweak some things so you could recover it? In what area can you be more valuable to the team you serve? What is your ideal day at work? What is your absolute non-ideal day? (The gap reveals your design.) What environments do you absolutely love walking into—where you think, "I can't believe I get to do this"? Practical Exercise: Map out your ideal day at work. Then map out your ideal Sabbath day (rest and replenishment). Then map out your absolute worst day—what drains you and feels like a beat down. The patterns you see will reveal your design. Do an audit at the end of each day for a week: Rate the day 1-10 and ask why. You'll start to see what energizes you versus what drains you. Resources Mentioned: Anti-Burnout by Alan Briggs (design principles threaded throughout) H2 Leadership Coaching (three-day intensive experiences to uncover your unique design) Want More? A major reason people burn out is they don't understand their design—they're living counter to how they're wired. If you want to go deeper on this, check out Alan's book Anti-Burnout and explore coaching at h2leadership.com. For leaders who know there's more—the "more" isn't out there. It's right here. Once you have clarity on your unique design, you can take courageous next steps to actually live in it.

How Can Architects Ditch the 'Starving Artist' Mentality and Design a More Profitable Future? To kick off Season 12 of Practice Disrupted, Evelyn Lee returns from her term as AIA President with a special episode, turning the tables to be interviewed by Tyler Suomala, founder of Growthitect. In this candid conversation, they reflect on Evelyn's year of travel and leadership, discussing the often unseen advocacy work of the AIA and the disconnect between national efforts and local members' perceptions.Evelyn and Tyler examine the core challenges facing the architecture profession, particularly the limitations of the traditional fee-for-service business model. They argue that the industry's "starving artist" mentality and reliance on slim margins are hindering innovation and the ability to offer competitive benefits such as parental leave. The discussion explores practical ways architects can capture more value, from rethinking "pre-design" and "post-occupancy" services to exploring subscription models for long-term building maintenance."You don't build your business first and then your life second. You have to build a business around the life that you want." - Tyler SuomalaBoth leaders emphasize that transformation starts at the individual level. They challenge listeners to stop waiting for permission or industry-wide change and instead take ownership of their careers by raising fees, embracing new skills like sales and marketing, and carving out dedicated time for strategic thinking. Whether you are a firm owner or an emerging professional, this episode offers a roadmap for building a more sustainable, profitable, and human-centric practice.Guest:Tyler Suomala is the founder of Growthitect, where he helps architects and designers master sales, marketing, and business development. After starting his own design studio early in his career and realizing the gaps in his business knowledge, Tyler pivoted to learn these essential skills in other industries. He is now dedicated to bringing those lessons back to the architecture profession, helping firm owners escape the "feast or famine" cycle and build thriving businesses. Is This Episode for You?This episode is for you if:✅ You are frustrated by the "starving artist" narrative in architecture and want to build a more profitable business. ✅ You are curious about alternative business models, such as subscription services or productizing your expertise. ✅ You want to understand the value of national advocacy and professional organizations like the AIA.✅ You are looking for strategies to balance design excellence with business operations and personal well-being. ✅ You are ready to stop waiting for the industry to change and start making moves in your own career today. What have you done to take action lately? In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Margarita Camarena. Margarita's relationship with money was shaped by two extremes. As a child, she fled Mexico City after the 1985 earthquake, lost her father that same year, and arrived in the U.S. with her family starting from zero. Years later, after earning two degrees from UC Davis, a lifestyle pivot collided with the 2008 financial crisis and led Margarita to bankruptcy. That decision forced her to face the shame and fear that can come with financial collapse, along with the freedom that can follow. With a mother who taught saving and structure and a father who believed life is meant to be enjoyed while you are healthy, Margarita's story is a powerful lesson in balance and in seeing money as an energy that needs to move. Xochitl Xiuh Ollin, also known as Margarita Camarena, is a Mayan Ajq'ij. She is also a craniosacral therapist, Reiki Master Teacher and manual therapist. She is Tenochca-Tlatelolca, born in Mexico City between the ancient twin cities of Tlatelolco and Tenochtitlan. As a child, she learned from her grandparents how to carry life in a holistic way through remedies and healing practices. Their approach to finances was conservative and rooted in respect, as money was understood to be a primary resource for security and for providing a “comfortable elderhood.” These practices were not labeled curanderismo; they were simply a way of life. As an Ajq'ij, Margarita's role is that of a spiritual guide, carrier of time and fire priestess. She conducts many types of fire ceremonies and works with the 20 sacred Mayan energies and the 13 frequencies of life to guide people. When Balance Shapes Longevity Margarita's story is a powerful reminder that money is never just about accumulation. It is about balance, resilience and the meaning we assign to our experiences. From rebuilding her life after loss and displacement to making the difficult decision to file for bankruptcy, she shows how moments often framed by fear or shame can become turning points for growth and renewal. By reframing money as an exchange of energy, Margarita invites us to consider how our financial choices intersect with health, purpose and the lives we hope to live over the long term. Her reflections on community, fear and legacy offer a more expansive view of longevity, not just in years lived, but in impact felt. If you're thinking about how to plan while navigating financial setbacks or major life transitions, an Aspiriant advisor can help you evaluate options, restore confidence and build a plan that aligns your resources with your values. After 300 plus conversations, one pattern keeps rising to the surface. The work we avoid is often the work that frees us.This is not about doing less.It is about doing what actually matters.5 ALLSMITH lessons explored1. Your nervous system sets your ceilingIf the body feels unsafe, the mind cannot lead. Calm is not weakness. Calm is control.Key quote: “Your body decides how high you're allowed to go before your mind ever gets a vote.”2. Discipline without meaning becomes self violenceGrinding without purpose slowly erodes the soul. Discipline should feel like devotion, not punishment.Key quote: “Discipline without meaning doesn't make you strong. It makes you numb.”3. Consistency beats intensity every timeIntensity makes noise. Consistency builds identity. The boring work is where trust is forged.Key quote: “Intensity impresses. Consistency transforms.”4. Your environment is either training you or draining youSpaces, inputs, and people shape behavior long before motivation shows up. Design beats willpower.Key quote: “If you don't design your environment, it will quietly design you.”5. Health is not the goal. It is the foundationWhen health collapses, everything else follows. They discuss the challenges and strategies in leading design at scale, how Adobe builds trust in the era of generative AI, and the importance of cross-functional collaboration. Ann shares insights on inclusive design, co-innovation with customers, and the evolving role of designers in creating user-centric and technologically advanced solutions.-------------------Key Takeaways:Successful AI-era design requires deep technical understanding alongside creative craft—designers must know the models and technology behind their interfaces to bridge human needs with AI capabilities.Speed and adaptability are essential as market paradigms can shift between conception and launch, requiring experimentation, customer co-innovation, and iterative validation over traditional research cycles.Design leadership gains influence by grounding decisions in data and user needs rather than aesthetic opinion, transforming design into a strategic driver in executive and engineering conversations.-------------------“ [Design] is really changing from a two-way model of communication and interaction to a three-way or more discussion. That's really thinking about it being a human, the interface they're working on, and then all of the things happening behind the scenes. In order for someone to be successful with what you're designing, designers have to start understanding the technology behind it. Because in order to deliver on the use case, you actually have to understand the technology and it will change the interface.” – Ann Rich-------------------Episode Timestamps:‍*(01:50) - Ann's mission at Adobe as a design leader‍*(08:15) - How trust factors into Adobe's design process‍*(16:53) - Ann's approach to inclusive design‍*(25:08) - What design teams should stop doing‍*(31:12) - A recent project that made a measurable difference for users‍*(39:06) - Ann's advice for designers looking to elevate their voice-------------------Links:Read Ann's Article How to Adapt Your Design Practice for the Age of Generative TechnologyConnect with Ann on LinkedInConnect with Kailey on LinkedInLearn more about Caspian Studios-------------------SponsorBuilders Wanted is brought to you by Twilio – the Customer Engagement Platform that helps builders turn real-time data into meaningful customer experiences. If you wake up when it's still dark, you know how overwhelming it can be to turn on the light. Your eyes may even hurt at first. If you've had this experience, you can understand one of the problems that had to be solved when radar was developed.Basically, radar is made up of two parts. The transmitter sends out a powerful beam of radar waves. But the other part of the radar system is a very sensitive receiver that cannot stand the powerful outgoing signal. One of the major technical problems to be overcome in developing modern radar involved sending out this powerful signal without overwhelming the sensitive receiver. What scientists finally developed was a fast switch that turns the sensitive receiver off every time a radar pulse is sent out.Bats, who have their own sonic radar, had this problem solved from the beginning. They have muscles in their ears that are the receivers for the echoes. These muscles close the ears for split seconds when the bats are sending out their high pitched signals.Without this feature, the bat's navigational system would be useless. How could a bat figure out that it needed this ability and then decide to grow the muscles and related tissue to do the job? When one decides to say that creatures, instead of the Creator, have made themselves, one can end up with some very silly conclusions!Matthew 6:27-29"Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these."Prayer: Dear Father; You have made all things well and with the good of the creation in mind. Help me to remember this when I tend to think of Your Word as separated from the realities of everyday life, thereby missing out on so many of the blessings You have prepared for me. In Jesus' Name. The panel explored the intersection of natural and man-made materials in landscape design, highlighting the balance between aesthetic, sustainability, and functional concerns. Participants discussed how interior and landscape designers borrow nature to create cohesive environments, including outdoor “rooms” and hardscape features softened with plantings. Material selection — stone, metal, glass, composite decking, and synthetic turf — was debated, with attention to local sourcing, durability, environmental impact, and client expectations. The panel also emphasized the sensory experience of landscapes, touching on sight, sound, smell, and taste, and how design can evoke memory and emotion. Sustainability, fire safety, maintenance, and longevity were recurring themes, particularly in the adoption of synthetic materials that mimic natural ones while reducing environmental or upkeep costs. Borrowed landscape: Using surrounding natural colors and textures to inform material choices in hardscape design. Softening hardscape: Plantings and layered design to maintain depth without overwhelming the property. Context-appropriate material selection: Stone, metal, glass, gravel, and concrete chosen according to environment, use, and climate. Trend toward natural imperfection: Broken edges, less precision, biophilic design responding to a highly digital, precise world. Sustainability tensions: Balancing natural and synthetic materials for longevity, cost, and environmental impact. Synthetic decking and recycled composites: TimberTech and similar products for durability, low maintenance, and fire safety. Artificial turf considerations: High-use areas, water savings, lifespan, recycling challenges. Sensory-driven design: Sight, sound, smell, and taste incorporated into landscapes for holistic human experiences. Childhood memory and emotional recall: Design that evokes personal sensory memory for users. Fire and climate constraints: Materials must meet modern safety and insurance standards.

Lawlessness didn't happen by accident. It was designed, incentivized, and protected by those in power. In today's episode, Todd Huff breaks down three major areas where the system has been deliberately abused: elections, immigration, and federal programs. From calls to nationalize election standards, to the misuse of asylum laws under the Biden administration, to shocking fraud embedded in Medicare spending, the common thread is clear—rules are being ignored to reward political gain. Todd explains why this moment matters, how real reform is finally within reach, and why conservatives must stay focused, grounded, and courageous as the country approaches a defining crossroads. This is about restoring law, order, and accountability—without rage, without fear, and without backing down.

On this episode of Daily Creative, we explore the myth of the lone genius and make the case for why sustainable creative brilliance happens when we grow and nurture real relationships. We're joined by Daniel Coyle, bestselling author and researcher, whose new book Flourish examines how true growth emerges not through competition, but through intentional connection and community. We discuss why relationships sit at the heart of creativity, what it means to build a meaningful circle, and how to design environments where both individuals and groups can grow. Daniel shares practical insights on “making meaning” and “group flow,” illustrating how small acts—like telling stories or organizing joyful gatherings—can catalyze shared energy and transformation. We reflect on why the most profound creative work, and indeed the solutions to our most complex problems, are more likely to be found at the neighborhood level than through grand top-down initiatives. This conversation isn't just about feeling less alone; it's a blueprint for intentional action in your creative life. We leave you with a challenge: take one step this week to strengthen your creative community, whether that's reaching out to a peer, convening a group, or simply asking deeper questions.Five Key Learnings from the Episode:Community Is Creative Infrastructure: Creativity doesn't thrive in isolation. The most resilient, sustainable creative work is built on relationships that provide stability, challenge, and honest feedback.Cultivate, Don't Compete: Flourishing is about shared, meaningful growth—think gardens, not games. Real creative communities are spaces for nurturing, not just winning or accumulating.Design for ‘Beautiful Messes': Innovation and group flow emerge when we intentionally create environments where people can experiment, collaborate, and bring out new facets in each other—even if things get a little messy.Deep Questions Build Trust: Asking ambiguous, personal “deep questions” unlocks vulnerability, connection, and trust far more quickly than waiting for trust to appear before opening up.Power With, Not Power Over: Leaders unleash real growth when they support, ask great questions, and give power away—moving from controlling outcomes to facilitating collective brilliance.Get full interviews and bonus content for free! Mental health problems like depression and anxiety affect enormous numbers of people and severely interfere with their lives. By contrast, we don't see similar levels of physical ill health in young people. At any point in time, something like 20% of young people are working through anxiety or depression that's seriously interfering with their lives — but nowhere near 20% of people in their 20s have severe heart disease or cancer or a similar failure in a key organ of the body other than the brain. From an evolutionary perspective, that's to be expected, right? If your heart or lungs or legs or skin stop working properly while you're a teenager, you're less likely to reproduce, and the genes that cause that malfunction get weeded out of the gene pool.So why is it that these evolutionary selective pressures seemingly fixed our bodies so that they work pretty smoothly for young people most of the time, but it feels like evolution fell asleep on the job when it comes to the brain? Why did evolution never get around to patching the most basic problems, like social anxiety, panic attacks, debilitating pessimism, or inappropriate mood swings? For that matter, why did evolution go out of its way to give us the capacity for low mood or chronic anxiety or extreme mood swings at all?Today's guest, Randy Nesse — a leader in the field of evolutionary psychiatry — wrote the book Good Reasons for Bad Feelings, in which he sets out to try to resolve this paradox.Rebroadcast: This episode originally aired in February 2024.Links to learn more, video, and full transcript: https://80k.info/rnIn the interview, host Rob Wiblin and Randy discuss the key points of the book, as well as:How the evolutionary psychiatry perspective can help people appreciate that their mental health problems are often the result of a useful and important system. How evolutionary pressures and dynamics lead to a wide range of different personalities, behaviours, strategies, and tradeoffs. The missing intellectual foundations of psychiatry, and how an evolutionary lens could revolutionise the field. How working as both an academic and a practicing psychiatrist shaped Randy's understanding of treating mental health problems. The “smoke detector principle” of why we experience so many false alarms along with true threats. The origins of morality and capacity for genuine love, and why Randy thinks it's a mistake to try to explain these from a selfish gene perspective.Evolutionary theories on why we age and die.And much more.Chapters:Cold Open (00:00:00)Rob's Intro (00:00:55)The interview begins (00:03:01)The history of evolutionary medicine (00:03:56)The evolutionary origin of anxiety (00:12:37)Design tradeoffs, diseases, and adaptations (00:43:19)The tricker case of depression (00:48:57)The purpose of low mood (00:54:08)Big mood swings vs barely any mood swings (01:22:41)Is mental health actually getting worse?
