Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian and political reporter Tal Schneider join host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and Defense Minister Israel Katz agreed on Israel’s response to Hamas’s counter-offer to a US proposal for a hostage-ceasefire deal at their meeting yesterday, Army Radio reports. The response has been forwarded to mediators, the report says. Officials are now awaiting the terror group’s response, but in the meantime, fighting continues on the ground in Gaza. Fabian fills us in. In a first, Israeli Navy missile boats on Tuesday morning launched strikes against infrastructure at the Houthi-controlled port of Hodeida in western Yemen. Fabian explains the pros and cons of using the naval forces instead of the air force for similar future attacks. The UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Norway said Tuesday that they would freeze assets and bar the entry of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich for having “incited extremist violence” against Palestinians in the West Bank. Schneider weighs in on all the various diplomatic efforts on the table designed to pressure Israel to stop the Gaza war, including the upcoming conference in New York co-sponsored by France and Saudi Arabia on the topic of the two-state solution. Leaders of opposition parties decided this morning to submit a private bill to dissolve the Knesset, starting the process of four votes that may -- or may not -- lead to new elections. Schneider dives into the thorny topic and explains the forces pulling strings behind the scenes. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Leading with Authenticity with Josh Patten

In today's episode, I'm joined by Josh Patten, a seasoned leader with a diverse background, including a long tenure at Aetna and a deep experience in crisis leadership. We dive into the tension that many leaders face—the difference between leading authentically and being influenced by external expectations. Josh shares his struggles with leadership, the pressure to perform, and how he's navigating the gap between his core values and the demands of his role. The Tension of LeadershipJosh opens up about the struggles of leadership, particularly in high-pressure situations like layoffs and turnarounds. As someone who's often been in a crisis leadership role, Josh reflects on how he's consistently been able to lead others, but in doing so, he has lost track of leading himself. His candidness about feeling disconnected from his values provides a real, relatable moment for anyone in a leadership role who's ever felt the weight of leading others at the cost of themselves. The Disconnect Between Who We Are and What We DoJosh talks about the disconnect he feels between his core self—someone who thrives in vision, creativity, and inspiration—and the daily demands of his leadership position. Even though Josh is where he wanted to be five years ago, he finds himself exhausted and unfulfilled because of the gap between who he is and what he does every day. This reflects a struggle that many leaders face—being stuck in a position where they're thriving externally but feeling drained and unfulfilled internally.Struggling with the Need for MoreEven though Josh acknowledges the successes he's achieved, he constantly wrestles with the idea of wanting more. More impact. More growth. More engagement. He talks about the tension between feeling content with what he has and recognizing there is more he could do. This conflict of always striving for more while trying to appreciate the present moment is something that many leaders struggle with.Leadership and Personal GrowthJosh shares an important lesson: leadership isn't just about managing systems and teams—it's about knowing who you are and where you want to go. Being clear on your values and communicating those values to your team is essential for authentic leadership. Josh's personal story illustrates how his self-awareness and emotional intelligence have guided his journey, but also how challenging it can be to lead from a place of authenticity when there's external pressure to conform. The Struggle to Stay True to YourselfAs Josh reflects on the personal and professional tensions in his life, he shares that part of his struggle comes from wanting to be both a high-energy visionary and a calm, centred leader. This duality often leaves him feeling inadequate, as he tries to fit himself into roles that he believes others need him to fill. However, Josh ultimately realises that the key to overcoming this tension is not trying to change who he is, but to embrace his true self and lead authentically, even when it feels uncomfortable. The Importance of Healthy ConflictThroughout the conversation, Josh emphasises the importance of healthy conflict and being willing to rock the boat. He shares that his most effective leadership moments come when he leans into his natural ability to challenge the status quo. However, he also realises that, in corporate settings, this kind of leadership is often misunderstood as combative. The key takeaway here is that healthy conflict, when done with clarity and respect, can drive clarity and success within a team.Leading from Your Own ValuesIn the end, Josh and I reflect on how the best leaders are those who know their own values and are unafraid to lead from that place of authenticity. Josh's journey serves as a reminder that leaders need to focus not just on their external accomplishments, but also on how they show up authentically, making decisions aligned with their core values. Leadership isn't about being someone else—it's about owning who you are and leading others to do the same.Challenge for LeadersJosh's story is a powerful reminder for leaders to ask themselves: Am I leading authentically, or am I trying to fit into someone else's mould of what leadership should look like? Leaders must lean into their own strengths and values and trust that doing so will help create the type of leadership that attracts the right people and creates lasting impact.Resources Mentioned:Follow Josh on Instagram: @JoshPattenCoachJoin my free Leadership Training: Join me for a leadership session this month. They explore the importance of employee engagement, the impact of offering childcare benefits, and the strategies KinderCare implements to maintain a positive work culture.Quotes“ We really depend on our center directors and our district leaders who are the local leadership to really be there. And again, we're a relationship business. So that doesn't mean be there and come into a center for an hour. It means literally sitting alongside teachers and center directors talking to them about what they need, when they need it, how they need it.  Those little moments where our leaders are supporting their team and that kind of is really so critical to our culture of engagement.”"One of the things that we do and started almost 13 years ago now at KinderCare is we measure employee engagement. We have a close partnership with Gallup, so it is really important for us to hear from our team, and that is our teachers, our center directors. We do that annually through a survey and then we action on it.""Now what we're seeing is a lot more of our teachers who maybe wanna work 20 hours, maybe 15 hours, they may be going back to school. The speakers highlight that the Mets' franchise home run record is surprisingly low compared to other, even more recently established MLB teams, placing them among the bottom three to seven teams in baseball history for this particular statistic. They also delve into historical team home run leaders across the league, noting legendary sluggers like Hank Aaron (Braves, 733 HRs) and Babe Ruth (Yankees, 659 HRs) and debating whether current Mets players like Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Juan Soto could eventually surpass Strawberry's relatively modest team record, suggesting it reflects the Mets' historical lack of consistent power hitting.

Everyone who cares about something and is investing themselves in what they care about is leading. Leaders find much fulfillment in serving others.  Whether it's serving as a CEO or a parent, the most significant moments for leaders come when they are giving their gifts, abilities, passion, and creativity.  Leaders who pour out great energy doing what is fulfilling also need to refill.   *Leaders need to be able to receive restoration and replenishment so they can continue to serve well. They refill by being humble enough to know their limits, to recognize their needs, and to ask for help.    I have worked with leaders for more than thirty-five years. I have recognized five common pitfalls that block leaders from receiving the replenishment that is essential to lead well. These pitfalls can stymie a leader's passion and purpose. As a result, the people the leader wishes to help ultimately do not receive what they need.   Pitfalls of Leadership Life is full of struggle, and the struggle is not preventable. Samuel Beckett wrote, “You are on earth. There is no cure for that.” Life's struggles are inevitable, but the Pitfalls of Leadership are preventable.   The Five Pitfalls: Work becomes confused with one's worth. Performance begins to be valued more than one's presence. People become things. To be an example to others, the true self is isolated. Secrets sap one's passion and purpose.   These pitfalls can destroy careers, friendships, reputations, marriages and families—unless one is freed from them.    Everyone always wonders, “What happened to them? How did this self-destruction happen?”   These episodes on the “Pitfalls” are about preventing those questions from being asked. Whether you are a parent, a pastor, a plumber, or a pulmonologist, these episodes are for you.   These episodes are also about what to do when you find yourself in the “Pitfalls” or when the consequences have already impacted your life.   Hope in spite of the Pitfalls: The beauty of life and the beauty of God in our lives gives us the hope of: redemption recovery restoration   Click here to continue reading the episode highlights.

She has more than 30 years of professional fundraising experience, specializing in strategic and development planning, campaign readiness and development program assessments, board and organizational training, executive leadership coaching, individual giving, and grant proposal evaluation. She's also a graduate of the Coaching for Leaders Academy. Fundraising is not a word that sparks joy for most leaders. In fact, many people who do fundraising never planned to have that be part of their career. And yet, almost every leader has an aspect of fundraising in their professional or personal lives. In this conversation, Alice and I explore how to get better at it. Key Points Almost every leader is involved with fundraising in some capacity, either personally or professionally. It's a myth that fundraising is just asking for money. Most fundraising activities happen outside of the ask. Consider fundraising goals options for must do activities, maintaining the current state, and aspirational growth. Most people share health issues with their immediate family and close friends. When your organization is facing headwinds, tell your donors how they can help. Dedicated attention to fundraising is key for both prioritization and relationship continuity. Connectors, experts, and closers are all essential roles in the fundraising process. Play to the strengths of both staff and volunteers to fill these roles well.
