How to Fail Perfectly

This week's pod is all about how to fail – and do it well… and fair warning, it's got some tough love in it! Now, many of us give up too easily and we complain about our perceived failures way too much, right? And we both know that what I teach is all about freedom -  to free your mind and free your life. The thing is: avoiding failure – having low failure resilience - is costing you your dreams, success, growth, learning, and expansion! When I see someone who is afraid to fail and not willing to take action (because a main reason why people don't take action is fear of failure), I see something amazing that is being put off, or that might never manifest. When I see someone indulging in excuses, blaming or pointing the finger I see no benefit – just that we are staying stuck. So today is about how you can increase your failure resilience. One of my superpowers is seeing what's possible for people, especially when they can't see it for themselves. And I really see a lot of people quit too early on their dreams. Many of us want to get out of debt… want to get healthy...want to have a more meaningful career… want better mental health...  But we also often want it to be easy! We want the result, but don't want to do the work. Or at least not do it when it ends up being more than we expected. We're afraid of the journey because it's probably going to be painful. But we ALL have been there. AND… we were born ready to fail! It's like babies falling over and over when they learn to walk. They HAVE to fall – its part of the learning. And think of where we'd all be if we gave up whenever we failed a bunch of times in a row. None of us would walk or eat. For realz. So even though the grit is innate in us, somehow it gets deconditioned. We start to worry about what people think. We think failure is a permanent part of who we fundamentally are, and that it somehow defines our worth. And we're even taught to avoid it, like in school when we're taught that a failing grade somehow means you aren't good enough. Learning how to fail starts with changing what failure means. Instead of it meaning something about who we are, about our worth, it can be just an example of the thoughts we have about a result we create. “I failed” is a thought. Not a fact, no matter how much we think it's a fact. I don't care if you got divorced. Didn't get the job. Weren't accepted to the grad school of your choice. It's not failure unless – until - we think of it that way. The next step is to figure out how to get it done. And how do we do that? By taking action. Sure, there are places in life where it might be helpful for an expert to tell you what to do or give you the answers. But you can't wait for someone to tell you when it comes to the really important decisions in your life. That's all you. And we have to do things to get clear. To get unstuck. Otherwise, if we're just “deciding” about something, we are just avoiding the possibility of failure. And you can't have a major life shift without doing. Clarity through action. Learning through action. And yes… that means lots of failure. Remember: failure is not factual. Failure is a result we created with action or inaction, and “feeling like a failure” is the result of a thought we had about a result we created, which is totally optional. So saying, “I failed” is actually a thought. It feels like a fact - we didn't get the job. We weren't accepted into the program. We didn't get pregnant. We filed for divorce. Those are facts. Failure is a thought.  So, are you all in on your dreams? It's one thing to be asked, “What would you do if you could not fail?” But it's a whole new level when you're asked, “What are you willing to do even if you know you'll fail?” That's what I want to talk with you about today. “What are you willing to do even if you know you'll fail?” Then do that. Go for it. Try. Don't be confused. Pick something. DO it. Then if it doesn't work out, do something else or do it differently. Tweak it. Go out there, rebels, and find out what's possible for you. In this episode you will learn:// What failure actually IS and why we're so afraid of it (hint: it's not what you think!)// Why we must fail in order to succeed, and what happens when we avoid it// How to increase your failure resilience  Resources:This week's pod is all about how to fail – and do it well… and fair warning, it's got some tough love in it! Now, many of us give up too easily and we complain about our perceived failures way too much, right? Our first Ask Thom Anything episode was such a hit that we're making it a regular feature. In this episode, Thom talks about how to respond to the jealousy of others when we're following our own evolutionary path, including a delightful background story to how Guru Dev stubbornly followed his own evolutionary path at a very young age.He also discusses the self-love trend and how to recognize the distinction between self-ish-ness and Self-ness. Polygamy and mongamy are also addressed, with Thom taking the opportunity to outline the role of a ‘love alliance' and shared mission in intimate relationships. If you'd like to have Thom answer a question on the podcast, you can submit your questions here.Episode Highlights: [00:57] Q - How Do We Balance Following Our Own Charm With Jealousy That Might Arise In Others [02:22] We Can't Control the Experience of Others[03:05] Jealousy Is… [04:38] Envy Gone Horribly Wrong [06:04] A Pathetic Consciousness State [07:38] I Have to Go to the Himalayas [08:59] Running Away From Home (At the Age of Six!) [10:07] The Shankaracharya [11:30] They Have to Trust That You Know What You Are Doing [12:49] Occasional Frank Conversations[14:09] What Are You Doing For Your Own Evolution? [15:27] Growing Out of Social Relationships [16:19] How Can We Know the Difference Between Self-love and Selfishness? [17:26] Upper-Case S Self [18:21] Lower-Case s self [19:18] Self-ish-ness and Selfness [20:34] Expanded Consciousness is the First Priority[21:43] Giving Beyond Conscious Receptivity [22:53] The Apparent Need for Reciprocity[24:28] Overcompensating [25:39] I Am the Fulfillment State Seeking the Need of the Time [26:45] How Love Evolves [27:39] Q - What's the Vedic Worldview on Polyamory and Monogamy? [28:10] A Love Alliance [29:04] Shared Mission [30:10] Differing Standards[31:30] “Dating” [32:38] A Field Full of Potential Confusion [34:00] A Mere Relation-Ship[34:55] Be Honest About ItUseful Links: info@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoles/https://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoles https://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

Beauty and the Biz Episode 100! The Top 10 Takeaways from 27 plastic and cosmetic surgeon interviews that Catherine has conducted over the past 2 years of the Beauty and the Biz podcast. These are the golden tips that you need to hear and implement in your own practice today! FREE! The choices your patients make...Explained: http://bit.ly/CatherinesFreeBook FREE! Advice Call: http://bit.ly/FreeCall   Hello and welcome to my 100th special episode of the Beauty and the Biz Podcast.   I started this podcast 2 years ago because it’s no longer enough to be a great cosmetic surgeon. Good marketers often beat out excellent surgeons - at least in the short run so this podcast is to keep you on track and remind you of what’s important.      The industry has evolved with different rules and strategies so it’s time to up your own game.   Because if you really want to be successful, you have to Adapt to Change. It’s about staying nibble in your thinking because:   The marketplace has changed Attitudes about cosmetic rejuvenation have changed The marketing channels have changed The patient preferences have changed and how they choose a service provider have changed. So, you need to change with them, or you’ll get left in the dust.   For this 100th special edition, I compiled the 10 Take-a-ways I learned from the many plastic surgeons I interviewed. BTW, I named them in the show notes.   These surgeons have been in practice ranging from 4 months to 46 years. A majority are in solo practice, some are in practice with a partner, and some have multiple partners.   So, to celebrate this 100th episode, I reviewed the interviews I’ve done with 27 plastic and cosmetic surgeons around the nation, and in Lebanon, to give you my top 10 take-a-ways of what they are doing to succeed:   Let’s get started:   ==================== Take-a-way #1. They have a Growth Mindset   They believe their abilities can be developed. They are open to growing as a person, surgeon and business person. They are passionate about growing their practice and always striving to be better. They are willing to push the envelope, learn, evolve and change. They stay open to life and opps that comes their way They think positive and are optimistic about their future They have resilience and see change as an opportunity to grow They believe their efforts determine their abilities and growth. They are open to new technologies, marketing trends and surgical techniques.   Take-a-way #2: They learn new skills Many surgeons have decided they are good at surgery but not good at managing people or business or marketing. So their minds are shut down to learning Maybe because they spent so much time as a student, they are done. Or business wasn’t taught in medical school so they are closed to learning new skills. The successful surgeons open their mind and learn the business of plastic surgery by reading books, joining masterminds They study and believe the sayings: Earners are Learners and Leaders are readers They believe they can learn to do anything and like to try new things vs. sticking to what they already know.”   Take-a-way #3: They know their numbers They manage their money. They watch their expenses and know their ROI on their SX and non-SX procedures as well as their marketing efforts. They have goals they are trying to hit, and the staff knows them as well. Rather than abdicate their responsibility, they take full responsibility for knowing what’s happening in their practice. They have a bookkeeper and accountant to do the work, but they review the work and numbers regularly so there are no surprises. They review the bank statements and ask questions, so staff knows they are watching the numbers.   Take-a-way #4:They treat their team like an asset rather than a liability Staff is not an overhead expense They know they can’t do this alone and need a team supporting them They meet with their team regularly and get their feedback from the front lines They have a trusted right-hand helping them keep the business side running smoothly They Have a Team Concept They respect the staff to be professionals but still….they Trust AND Verify They build a culture of a team with a purpose Philanthropic efforts to give back are a key part of their culture They meet with staff regularly to lead them and keep them in the loop. They set up a culture of excellence and offer good pay, team bonuses, free additional training to better the staff so they grow as well as incentives and appreciation including team parties, food trucks and in-house masseuse to keep it fun. And, they hire slow and fire fast if someone does not fit with their culture.   Take-a-way #5: They have a “patients for life” mindset They see their patients as friends and family and treat them with respect They understand that these happy patients can be patients for decades and refer their friends and family and return for more They know it’s far easier to KEEP these patients coming back so they offer comprehensive services to include all stages in life. Actually, Dr. Grant Stevens reported on average cosmetic patients have 3 SX over 22 years for a value of $80K-$120K. They attract more sophisticated patients who know you get what you pay for vs. catering to the price sensitive who don’t value skill and experience as much as saving money. They go above and beyond to take care of their patients by offering their cell phone and one surgeon even did house calls. Rather than discount their surgery they added value instead. For example, facelifts came with skin rejuvenation laser treatments and lymphatic massage came with liposuction.   Take-a-way #6: They fail and learn from it They see failure as an opp to grow rather than a limit on their abilities. They know failure is just feedback and they try again. They see challenges as a good thing vs. I don’t like to be challenged. They stay curious and ask lots of questions They take responsibility for everything that happens in their practice and they deal with it professionally. They React Quickly to Issues that come up and think solutions. For example, a practice was losing 30% of patients who couldn’t afford big surgical cases, so one surgeon started his own internal financing service. And, During the COVID shutdown, many used that time as an opp to keep staff busy with training, improving their systems and fine-tuning their processes.   Take-a-way #7: They Don’t Care What Others Think About Them They stay focused on what they are doing more than what their competitors are doing They don’t care as much what their critics say about them as they do what their patients say about them then since they are the ones paying the surgeon’s bills.                                                      They do care what their patients think about them and they learn from their bad reviews They meet with their staff to ask,“Is there any truth to this criticism?” and How can we do better?   Take-a-way #8: They Spend Money to Make Money They know money buys them time They see marketing as an investment Rather than focus on saving money – they focus on making money They think abundance vs. scarcity They know you can’t shrink your way to success – you can cut some expenses, but the real way to wealth is to focus on assets and income. They are frugal with their time, not their money They understand the opp costs of doing things that should be outsourced such as learning SEO and writing your own web copy. They have win-win relationships with their vendors who help them succeed during COVID , several surgeons doubled down on their marketing and cut deals with advertisers when everyone else pulled back. That allowed them to gain attention and market share. They give money away. They donate to worthy causes because it gives their staff the “why” they do what they do and a common purpose for the whole team and it makes everyone feel good.   Take-a-way #9: They Keep Their Ego in Check & control their emotions They are even tempered and treat everyone with respect. They are opened to being wrong if it helps the practice grow They see feedback as constructive vs. taking feedback and criticism personally. They take responsibility and don’t blame staff, the competition or the government. They get outside help to discover what they don’t know that is holding them back. They ask Questions vs. being a Know-it-All They stay open to ideas and suggestions from their staff and advisors. They are able to let go of control and micro-managing because they trust the people around them They are competitive by nature and use that for motivation to grow They stay curious by visiting other practices, attending conferences and talking with their collegues to learn what others are doing that’s working. They are always honing their kraft to make them the best at what they do When a challenge comes up, they focus on solutions, rather than running from it and hoping it goes away. They eliminate practice drags such as draining staff and difficult patients. They also delegate tasks they dislike doing to people they trust, but they also follow up to be sure it’s getting done.   And take-a-way #10:They think big They grow uncomfortable being the only revenue-generator in the practice. They look for ways to leverage their reputation, experience and staff. They figure out how to scale by working ON their practice rather than IN it. They see they could do more than just surgery. They look at other streams of income rather than work harder and longer which leads to burn out and ineffectiveness. They spend more time finding, managing and mentoring key players in their practice who become major revenue generators so the surgeon can focus more on the business side such as adding more surgeons, injectors, aestheticians and locations.   And there you have it! the 10 take-a-ways I got from the surgeons I interviewed.   You may want to listen to that again since it contains lots of pearls to consider when creating your own roadmap to success.   And, Of course, please contact me if you could use guidance.   Just leave me a message on my website or DM on Instagram.   Ok, that’s it for now and please do me a favor and subscribe to Beauty and the Biz and I’d love a good review.   Take care!   Here's a BIG THANKS to all of the industry experts who shared with me their most successful tips and advice: Gary Linkov, MD - https://cityfacialplastics.com/ Adam J. In 1980, Iowan man William Beeman was accused of murdering a woman named Michiel Winkel. However, Winkel was seen by several witnesses for days after the alleged time of her murder. Despite this testimony, Beeman has remained in prison for the last forty years. Enter Erica Nichols Cook, the Director Wrongful Conviction Division at the Iowa State Public Defender. Cook has spent the last several years attempting to get Beeman a new trial based on previous, possibly intentionally undisclosed evidence — evidence that could exonerate him. In this installment, she rehashes the outlandish circumstances of the case, provides updates on its appeal status, and discusses the challenges of reforming the criminal justice system in one of the most immutable states in the country. As Director of the Wrongful Conviction Division (WCD) in Iowa’s Office of the State Public Defender, how serious is the problem of innocent people being locked up in America, in your opinion? [01:49] Throughout the world, there have been 2,700 exonerations since 1989, only 16 of which were in Iowa. [2:20] Sounds like Iowa is a little bit behind the times… on Open Mike, we’ve talked to many people who deal with the conviction integrity units inside the prosecutor’s office. You are inside the defender’s office, (Jeff Wright who is on the podcast with us) which is the complete opposite. I don’t quite understand it, because you guys are the defenders of these people — of course you think these people are wrongfully convicted… so what good does it do? Jeff, I’m going to direct that question to you. [3:30] So the difference is you have a department inside the Public Defender’s Office that specifically looks at post-conviction cases. This started in about 2015 — what led to this division being created? [06:49] Do you guys still have private attorneys who can handle criminal cases, a court-appointed system? [07:22] Not every state has a state-run public defender’s office — Michigan doesn’t have one. I’ve asked several criminal defense attorneys why that is. Do you think it’s important to have one overseer of all the public defenders in the state, as opposed to on a county-wide basis? [08:39] What are some of the recurring issues that have led to so many innocent people going to prison? You mentioned there are less than 20 in Iowa, which is shockingly low… you know there are hundreds, if not thousands more. What are some trends that you’re seeing? [09:21] You’re talking about Brady violations… a lot of our listeners don’t know what that means — could you give us a brief lesson on that? [11:16] That’s a fascinating process, I’ve never heard of a deposition in a criminal case. That means you can sit with a police officer, detective, or investigator and ask if there’s any exculpatory evidence. Based on their truth and veracity, you get what they tell you… whether or not it’s the right authority person. Am I interpreting this correctly? Because it all sounds very strange! [13:31] It sounds like you need a law change, and you have a friendly lieutenant governor there… but if they’re not going to hand you a report, how do they comply with Brady? [14:01] It sounds like a waste of time, money, legal resources… you might have twenty people to depose — who has the time for that, especially if you’re deposed or a court-appointed attorney? [14:54] What’s the recipe for successfully finding the right experts and preventing wrongful convictions in the future? [15:52] You talk about violation of due process… are you referring to the 1980 case of William Beeman? Let’s dive into it. [20:42] Was the interrogation recorded? Or was there any evidence tying him to the crime scene? [22:05] The one piece of evidence you haven’t talked about yet — and tell me if I read your briefs wrong — there were SEVEN eyewitnesses who saw the victim after the time frame during which she was allegedly killed. [22:59] Two of the exculpatory witnesses were also hypnotized by law enforcement to get more information about Michiel Winkel’s whereabouts. [23:50] In 2019, prosecutors turned over an 853-page investigative report after a judge ordered discovery to obtain DNA testing of a semen sample located at the scene of the crime. In this document, they found eyewitnesses accounts that would have corroborated two other eyewitness accounts of seeing Winkel out and about AFTER the time period in which Beeman allegedly killed her. The trial attorneys did not have any of this information available to them before they went to trial on behalf of Beeman. [24:45] So the jury did hear from two or three witnesses that she was alive after the date prosecution said she was killed. That was actually argued and presented, and they still didn’t believe it? [25:30] The body was not kept in a cooler between the time it was located and when an autopsy was conducted the next day. The medical examiner who conducted the autopsy was a family practice doctor, who wasn’t experienced in forensics. [26:30] The body was in a stage of rigor mortis that corroborated other timeline witnesses that saw Winkel after the alleged time of her death. [27:04] What is the state saying now? Why are there still roadblocks? Why is there no honest prosecutor stepping up to help exonerate this man, what is going on there? [29:26] When a free society decides to imprison its people, it needs to do everything within its power to ensure that they’re guilty. And if there is anything that determines later that they’re not, it needs to be given full weight and evaluated. [30:10] It feels like every day I’m getting a notification that someone has been exonerated. The momentum is here, but it doesn’t seem like Iowa has caught up yet. My question is… have you been in front of a judge with this new evidence? What did they say? [32:27] So the court of appeals hasn’t ruled… how is the makeup of your Supreme Court — I assume pretty Republican? Is your governor a Republican? Lieutenant governor as well? He seems pretty sympathetic as a former defender, though… [34:22] I’ve become friends with some exonerees here in Michigan, and some of their stories go back to a newspaper columnist who took interest in their story and got the attention of the public on their side. Has this man received good public attention in Iowa yet? [36:09] The right person has to hear it, and the right person has to get mad. This DNA evidence is so important, and there are so many innocence clinics just focusing on DNA… I assume you haven’t searched their evidence room? [36:30] They HAVE searched the evidence room. There are boxes from 1979, but not 1980. There is no box labeled “Beeman” or “Winkel” and no explanation. [37:16] How old is Mr. Beeman these days? [37:40] Thank you both for your work on the Beeman case. Please let me know what happens with the court of appeals. Let’s try to get some publicity out there so people know what’s happening. Best of luck and keep fighting. [38:28] Thank you for watching Open Mike. If anybody you know is interested or experienced in these cases, please forward this episode to them. We really appreciate your support. Take care.

Changing the Rules

Transcript:Diane Dayton  0:03  This is changing the rules, a podcast about designing the life you want to live, hosted by KC Dempster and Ray Loewe the luckiest guy in the world.KC Dempster  0:13  Good morning, everybody. Welcome to Changing the Rules. I'm KC Dempster. And I'm here with Ray Loewe the luckiest guy in the world. Okay, and, and I just wanted to just set up what we do on our podcast, we talk about rules and throughout our lives we are we are given rules we're given them as our, from our parents, when we're children, from schools, from the community, from churches, as we get older from employers, and most of the times these rules are intended to be helpful, to protect us to maybe mold us so that we can live in society successfully. But oftentimes as we get older and take more control of our our lives, and what we want to do, The rules start to become restrictive. And what the luckiest people in the world do is that they recognize that these rules are keeping them from doing what they want to do. So they start to either change the rules, drop the rules, they move on, they make their own rules. And once they've done that, they're free to be themselves.Ray Loewe  1:21  Yes, they are. And there are way too many rules. We're going to break a whole lot today. And we have a guest with us that is an expert at breaking rules and making rules. So this whole concept of changing rules is based on something I've been doing for the last 45-50 years, almost all my adult life and that is tracking a group of people that I call the luckiest people in the world. All right. These are people that we see every day, you know, they're out there, they're they're kind of like, everything goes right for them. They Have this or have success about them. And yet as hard as they work, they managed to play hard also. And they're doing exciting and interesting things. And they seem to always be in a positive mood and always moving forward. And I decided years ago that this was a group of people that I wanted to hang out with. All right, and and then as time went on, I decided, Well, you know, if I'm going to hang out with these people, I better be like this. And one of the things that these people do that is the basis of everything, is they personally design their own lives, and then they step into their lives and they live them to the fullest. So they break rules, and that's one of the biggest mindsets that that almost every one of them goes through. They look at this concept of a rule and they say, you know, I can't be me if I'm living by somebody else's rules, right? And it's okay to adopt other people's rules and make thm ours. We've been going through that lately. We We have this pandemic. And we have a social distancing rule and a mask rule. And I think those rules are great. I mean, they're part of my life. Now. They're my rules, right? Okay. But they're also cause us to do certain kinds of things. And when we hit those barriers, and we can't do what we want to do, then we have to make some changes. So our guest today follows on one of the rules that we haven't spent a lot of time with yet. She definitely has a mission. Okay. And what she says she does is she helps people get to the finish line. So I'm going to take a break and when we come back, we'll we will introduce Judy, and we'll have a whirlwind conversation of wisdom and energy and whatever else. Oh, good. All right, Taylor.Diane Dayton  3:51  You're listening to changing the rules with KC Dempster and Ray Loewe the luckiest guy in the world. We will be right back with more exciting information.Ray Loewe  4:01  All right, we're very we be back. All right. So Judy told me right away that she qualifies for being one of the luckiest people in the world. Because her husband cooks and cooks well so so Judy Dang say Say hi to everybody from San Francisco.Judy Dang  4:25  Hello Judy here from San Francisco. foggy cold right now.KC Dempster  4:30  Oh, and we are blistering hot here in New Jersey, but that's okay.Ray Loewe  4:34  So let me let me hit a couple people with some pieces of your bio here to kind of get this conversation started so, so Judy Dang helps entrepreneurs turn their business plans into action. And she breaks down large fuzzy projects into snackable easy bites.KC Dempster  4:54  I don't know. I'm sensing a theme here. You're gonna make me hungry.Ray Loewe  4:57  I have this visualization right now. So, so talk to us a little bit about how you got into this business, and a little bit more about what you do. And then I got a whole bunch of very specific questions for you.Judy Dang  5:10  All right. How I got into the business was about 12 years ago, I was working at a big university, and I had a major depressive episode that prompted me to take a break. I was in the wrong job. I had taken a job and after a month, it was the wrong job for me, but I was like, Gumby. I grew up with the teaching that I should work hard. contort myself to the situation. If the situation isn't working, there's something I need to do there's something wrong and I need to fix it. So I spent 18 months a very depressed Gumby.Ray Loewe  5:55  taught talk to us about Gumby here. I have this visualization over here of this stretchy, and that's what you were doing wasn't it? You were you're stretching to meet what you thought everybody else wanted.Judy Dang  6:08  Exactly outside expectations. Nevermind what my internal compass was saying, which is wrong job wrong people wrong job wrong people it said that every single day, but I ignored it. And I contorted myself to kind of work and it was miserable.Ray Loewe  6:26  So this sounds like 90% of the people of the world, right?  I mean, you think about it, one of the things that we've noticed is that there are some people that absolutely love their job, you know, and they're in the right place. And you know, that's wonderful. And there are other people who very definitely know they're in the wrong job. Okay. And usually they will make a change. And then there's like a whole bunch of people in limbo that is kind of where you were, wasn't it?Judy Dang  6:57  It's okay. I've discovered through That situation, it's okay to know that you were in the wrong job. Just don't make it about yourself. Like, you know, I made about me like it was a judgment about my self. And that was what held me back. Like, of course we're, we're probably gonna have lots of Oh, I took the wrong detour, oh, this was a dead end but not to make a judgement about our, our self worth, because of those choices.KC Dempster  7:30  That's that's really a good point because what happens to a lot of young people who start a career is that they start taking on responsibilities, they buy a house or they get married and have a family and they feel trapped. And they feel like they can't change, you know, change jobs that they can't afford to do that but but as long as they're not making negative statements about themselves, to themselves. It doesn't necessarily have to be a terrible thing.Judy Dang  8:05  Right? If you're living with intention saying I have a family, I chose to have a family I chose to buy this house. I'm going to be responsible and do what it takes to take care of my family. And being intentional about making those choices. Yes, absolutely.Ray Loewe  8:19  For sure. So how do you make this shift?Judy Dang  8:24  Change the rules? changing the rules!Ray Loewe  8:26  This is where the five P's come in?Judy Dang  8:29  This is the five P's where I've learned about and this is the some of these P's I've reversed myself during the pandemic, okay, the first p five pays to enjoy business and life. That's why I call them P. First p positivity. There are a lot of stories in our heads, and we tend to think negative. What are they gonna think there's a disaster. We're gonna die tomorrow, you know, very doom and gloom. So Every day I train myself, because life has always provided for me. Even in the dark times I remind myself, things have always worked out for me. You know, I've never been homeless. Things have usually worked out. Because I'm here. Right? Yeah. And it's not about avoiding or eliminating the tough times, but moving through them.Ray Loewe  9:26  Okay, you you I picked this up from an earlier conversation. So I'm cheating. But you had a mindset here. And that mindset is the world is a friendly place.Judy Dang  9:38  Yes, the world conspires to help us to support us and to see us thrive. That is my belief and it is evident everywhere, like our conversation or meeting. I did not set out to say, you know, on July 1, I'm going to meet this guy named Ray. No, but it happened. It is The world conspired for you to come into my life for a purpose.Ray Loewe  10:05  To this is why I'm the one of the luckiest people in the world because I get to talk to people like you every day. You know, and and I get to do a formal presentation like this a couple times a week, you know, how can I not be lucky? All right. And and when you when you talk to somebody like you and you talk and you come out with the world as a friendly place. Oh, wow. Okay, because a lot of times, I don't think that but but it is, it really is a friendly place when you think of it the right way,Judy Dang  10:37  Yeah, for sure. Okay, the next piece number two be number two plans, plans. Now during the pandemic. A lot of plans have been thrown up in the air. So I'm reversing myself with I usually help clients with you want to get to this destination. All right, this is how you get there. ABC. Sometimes we go on detours. Yes, so During the pandemic, I'm assisting clients with creating flexible plans. Yeah, have plants sure have routines, you know, get up at the same time every day I go to bed. I have an alarm on my phone that says 9:30 and get ready for bed. Because I need that for myself. But it's flexible, depending on what I'm doing. So yes, have plans be flexible leave room for serendipity. leave room for serendipity and detours. Okay, okay, number two, have loose plans. Ready for number three? Yep. Okay, pals, p pals. Oh my gosh, humans are social creatures, right? We need each other to thrive. We need each other to grow. I have an accountability group that I started because of the pandemic. We get together in the morning 25 minutes every day, Monday through Friday and has been going on since March. It's incredible. These pals a reality check for me. Where Reality Check for each other. We don't buy into each other's BS. We remind each other. Hey, you said you wanted to digita yesterday, how'd it go? And a lot of times I live in my head with those inner Gremlins, you know, perfectionism, that's my deepest darkest Gremlin and these pals of mine. Give me a reality check for that Gremlin. If I tell them you know, I'm working on this blog and you know, I'm gonna spend two hours on it. They'll say what two hours does it really need two hours? NO! and they also helped me with the negativity in my head about not good enough imposter syndrome. Because they tell me as a from a friend perspective, with my best friends say they would say all those things. To me not stuck in my head. So that's the third. P is pals have a group of trusted, trusted friends but you business I usually have a great rapport my business friends. Very special group of people on a regular basis and I have a friend I talk to every week, half an hour Allison Chicago. She's my accountability, buddy.Ray Loewe  13:27  Okay, so shall we have more P's though, right?Judy Dang  13:30  P's number four. Number four is persistence. So the first one is positively to is plans for three is pals. And the fourth is persistence to show up and show up again. Just keep on showing up because we don't wait until we're hungry to plant a garden right? We planted before we are hungry and then the persistence is keep watering on a regular basis.Ray Loewe  14:00  Well, if you have a plan, you do that, right? If you don't have a plan, maybe you don't do that. But you"re right...Judy Dang  14:09  loose plans like, okay, I want to plant a garden before I'm hungry. I'm going to start seeding the ground. And then the persistence. The fourth P is regular care and feeding of yourself, your network, your peers, your family, to showing up showing up again to wait on the sidelines for you know, somedayRay Loewe  14:35  your pals help that.Judy Dang  14:39  Yes, they remind me Oh, like yes, they do remind me and they, they're great encouragement. Really good encouragement. I'm an introvert. So I do a lot of things on my own and they helped me to blossom, really bring what's Inside OutsideRay Loewe  15:02  Okay, let's get to this fifth p here.Judy Dang  15:06  Yes it is patience . Oh gosh gosh patience for me in my business is hard because you know how there's that saying about there's like you need like nine touches to see to secure a client or someone that nine or 15 or whatever that's where patience comes in here you know is hard for me like what? you know what my genius I have all these things to offer you! know are no things are not right now you know I used to feel really devastated. but now the patience is to accept that no doesn't mean no forever. Just know right now.Ray Loewe  15:57  You know there are when We were talking about this earlier, you brought up the Four Seasons when you're talking about patience. And you are the master of analogies. I mean, I'm looking at Gumby right now I'm wiggling around over here. I'm thinking about your pals. I can see all of them gathered around you, you know, supporting you and doing this thing, andJudy Dang  16:22  the gardenRay Loewe  16:23  and the garden and talk to us about the Four Seasons, but in your patience, because not everything happens the way you want it to happen, does it?Judy Dang  16:32  Right, right. And the four seasons. Oftentimes, we think of winter as a dead time, nothing's happening. Sometimes in our lives. We're in different seasons of our lives and wintertime is actually a growth season. We just don't see it. Because they're the leaves aren't on the branches. Just because there are no leaves doesn't mean the tree is dead. There's a tremendous work happening underneath the surface that we don't see. And with ourselves, it's the same. Maybe during this pandemic, it's time to do a pause to enter a small winter period of Hmm, what is my life about, am I happy my job? Just taking an assessment. So wintertime doesn't mean that there's nothing going on. It's just it's going on underneath. Others can't see but there's tremendous growth. And in other seasons, then we can take advantage of springtime and summertime and fall reaping the harvest of the inner work.Ray Loewe  17:41  Okay, we're almost done with time, unfortunately. But I do have one other thing. Oh, and you were talking about the way you help people here deals with an inside system in and outside system. And I think it's important for people to realize that there are these two things going on. So can you talk a little bit about that?Judy Dang  18:00  Yeah, sure. So oftentimes people come to me with symptoms. I'm overwhelmed. I don't have I wish I had more time for my business where I work. And we usually uncover something internal happens for them first we work on that inner stuff first before we work on the tools and techniques and you know, time blocking and all that other stuff that you see online so much, you know, five tips to you know, have more hours in your day that comes after that comes after. Usually we work on the inner stuff. First of all, do I value my time? Why am I saying yes to sell anything? So we start with the inner work first.Ray Loewe  18:42  Okay, so so let me kind of recap because I got a whole lot of really interesting stuff about this Gumby. Okay, you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna think about Gumby now forever and ever and ever, but, but you know, when we started this conversation, you're talking about you and being stuck in a job that You never should have been stuck in and yet you have commitments in life. So there was nothing wrong with being stuck there. It's just that over time you needed to make changes so you could get on with your life. I think that's a real important message for our listeners, because lots of people find themselves in that. I think I love this inside and outside bit, okay, because we all need systems and things to support us. But there's also an inside thing, you know, getting our self confidence up. You can't do anything if you're not self confident, And if you're self confident, you can do anything, can't you, Judy?Judy Dang  19:37  Well, can you back up on that stuck thing for a moment for your listeners? feeling stuck, Yeah, it's debilitating when we feel stuck because we feel like we're out of control. We don't have control over our lives. And so I'd like to encourage folks to release that story about I'm stuck in this Job and say, change it, reframe it to, I'm choosing this job for the next month or the next three months or whatever, I'm going to choose to stay in this job. And then I'm going to make a move instead of, I'm stuck in this job. So take some, you know, a little bit of control back from, you know, that stuckness and say, No, I'm not stuck. I'm choosing this job for, you know, the foreseeable future or whatever timeframe, and then I'm going to make a shift.Ray Loewe  20:34  Okay, I think we want to end on that word of wisdom, because Boy, that is so true of so many people. And I think that that will help people change their lives. So Judy, thank you so much for being with us. You definitely are one of the luckiest people in the world. Even if you weren't married to this guy who cooks I still think you'd be there and we will have you back sometime or We're going to have you on one of our coffee cocktail hour so that our listeners can spend a little bit more time with you. And positivity is we're going to be back next week with another guest.KC Dempster  21:43  That's correct. And I just want to remind everybody, that it's not enough to choose to make a one time commitment to being lucky. It's an ongoing process. You have to keep working at it and re examining yourself and doing that inside work. as Judy called it and, and, you know, look, look for things that can help you and support you. And I think the pals is a great idea too. So, we'll be back next week. And join us again for some great wisdom. The Philadelphia Eagles are moving into the next part of the off-season which is the NFL Combine. Doug Pederson and Howie Roseman spoke to the media talking about how they want to "retool." For some reason, that got people fired up thinking that means they aren't trying to win next season. They HAVE to retool. We have been screaming about the lack of speed and youth for a couple seasons now so the front office is telling you the process & how they will approach that. Also, Jason Peters was brought up in conversation.... I don't see the logic in bringing him back at left tackle if they drafted Andre DIllard IN THE FIRST ROUND! Lastly, the way they are going to target free agents is interesting. All around, I believe in the retooling approach because it clearly needs to happen.

Welcome to the first episode of Nerd Heaven. We're counting down the 10 Star Trek episodes and movies that you should watch before Star Trek Picard releases. Today, we're looking at Star Trek: The Next Generation "The Best of Both Worlds". I share my thoughts and review of this iconic episode which changes the life of Jean-Luc Picard forever. If you enjoyed this episode, you can buy me a hot chocolate.  ----more---- Transcript Welcome to Nerd Heaven.I’m Adam David Collings, The author of Jewel of The Stars. And I…am a nerd. In this podcast, we’re gonna geek out together over works of science fiction and fantasy. TV shows, movies and books.Star Trek Picard is coming out on the 24th of January next year.Today is the first of our looks at the Star Trek episodes and movies that you should watch before Picard. And today’s episode is Best of Both Worlds. The IMDB description for this episode isResponding to a distress call on one of the Federation’s outer-most colonies, the Enterprise arrives…only to find a big hole in the ground where the town used to be and discovers the Borg are behind the attack.Part 1 of this episode first aired on the 18th of June 1990.Part first aired on the 4th of September, 1990. So let’s launch right into the episode. The episode starts out like any other. An away team is beaming down to investigate a distress call. It could be caused by any alien of the week. But as they appear in what should be the centre of town, and see before them, a massive hole in the surface of the planet, we know, this isn’t just any episode. This is something significant. That visual of what’s left is fantastic, and they a great job of integrating the live actors into the scene. The tone and stakes are made clear right after the credits, when Admiral Hanson says, “Hell, we are not ready. We’ve known they were coming for over a year. We’ve thrown every resource we have into this, but still…” The second season episode, Q Who, did a great job of establishing just how unbeatable the Borg are. In that story, we encountered them in the delta quadrant. The enterprise survived because Q was able to snap them back home. But now, they’ve come to us. This isn’t the depths of unexplored space. They’re heading for our backyard. So we get the introduction of Commander Shelby. Now, I don’t know how much I’d like her as a person if I really knew her, but I can say I definitely like her as a character. She brings a whole lot of interesting conflict into the show and forces Riker to take a close look at himself. It’s tempting to think of Best of Both Worlds as a Picard story because it has such a major life-changing effect on him, and that’s true. That’s why I chose this as an episode to watch in the lead-up to Picard’s new show. But in a truer sense, this is a Riker episode. Riker is the protagonist. Of Best of Both Worlds. Shelby is a good officer. The traits that make her so frustrating, that make her clash with Riker so much, are also the traits that were needed to cut through all the drama and make some progress, trying to develop a defence against the Borg. This is the third time Riker has turned down an offer to captain his own ship. I can understand that. After all, this is the Enterprise.Plus, there’s something comforting about a stable job. Staying where you’re comfortable. In the 20 years since I left university, I’ve only had 3 jobs. Of course, nobody has been offering me the captain’s chair of a starship! Shelby does make some genuine mistakes. Her first is beaming down ahead of schedule without permission. I wonder if part of that is the great latitude that Admiral Hanson has been giving her. She is clearly surprised that Riker is so upset by her actions. She thought he’d be cool with it. I love this episode for the character stuff with Riker and Shelby just as much as I do for all the Borg stuff. I like exciting sci-fi action plots with big stakes, and I like powerfully emotional character-driven stories. But my favourite types of episodes are those that combine both. That’s one of the things I loved so much about Babylon 5. I love how the dread slowly building through this episode.First of all, there’s the mystery. We think it’s the Borg. Then the confirmation. Then our first encounter with them. Each step raises the tension and clarifies the stakes. Picard doesn’t want to lose Riker. He’s a fine first officer. But as a friend, he wants what is best for Riker.Interestingly, this kind of reflected Michael Piller’s own journey. He was considering leaving the show. He wrote episode 1 without knowing what would happen in episode 2, or if he would even be there to write it. It was Gene Roddenberry who convinced him to stay. Sometimes when a writer draws from their own life experiences like this, they can create something that rings especially true. I know I’ve found that with my own writing. Riker and Shelby argue about whether to keep working on their defences or get some rest. I’m never quite sure whose side I’m on. Because they’re both right. As Shelby says, the borg are coming. They HAVE to get a workable defence. At times like this, maybe sleep isn’t the highest priority. The clock is ticking and every second counts. But Riker is also right. They can’t function on no sleep. I know for me, if I’m stuck on a problem in my work as a programmer, pushing on into the night is completely pointless. But if I call it a night and try again in the morning, the answer often presents itself surprisingly quickly. It’s uncanny. That actually happened to me last night. I’d been working on a problem all day, and I just couldn’t find a solution. This morning, I thought ‘hmm. I’ll just try this’. And that lead me to the solution. It happens. The music in this episode is great. A lot of the music in the early seasons of TNG sound very dated to me, but this episode is the first one that I remember having a truly epic musical score Also, the show looks absolutely beautiful in high definition.I know all the episodes look good in their remastered form, but I was especially noticing it here. Not sure why. Shelby’s second big mistake, of course, was going to Picard behind Riker’s back with her plan, bypassing the chain of command.I get her perspective. She has a plan she really believes in. Riker might be playing it too safe. She doesn’t want to plan dismissed because he thinks it’s too risky. As she says, “I’d like the captain to make that determination.”But Riker clearly said he takes all alternatives to the captain. She didn’t need to go behind his back. And then we get the scene where they have it out in the turbo lift. It’s awesome stuff. In an era where writers were virtually banned from having conflict between the characters, this story really broke free and let loose. Sure, it’s tame by today’s standards, but at the time, and under the rules the show was being run with, it was huge. The episode slows down a little here, as the enterprise hides from the borg in the nebula. That isn’t a bad thing. It gives us space to really live in the tension and acknowledge just how much worse this situation is than anything our heroes have ever faced before. Picard has a great conversation with Guinan. I love Guinan, and I’ve always enjoyed her relationship with Picard.I wonder if we’ll see her return in Picard. They’d probably have to use some de-ageing technology, since the character doesn’t age, like the human actor who portrays her. So the borg kidnap Picard and then set a course for Earth.Could things possibly get any worse. The interior of the Borg ship looks great. They took the design from Q Who, which was already good, but made the ship look bigger and creepier. The struggle to adjust to being captain begin immediately for Riker, as he has to be corrected by Troi in front of the entire bridge when he insists on leading the away team himself. And so Picard is assimilated. This is the very first assimilation we’d ever seen. In fact, the first suggestion of the idea of assimilation. How chilling that must have been for the characters.Being killed by your enemy is one thing, but for them to make you one of them? That’s the fear that drives our current fascination with zombies. And now we come to that epic incredible cliffhanger. Where Picard appears on the viewscreen as Locutus, speaking for the Borg. And Riker orders Worf to fire. And this is where my experience differs from most. You see, I didn’t see this episode on TV. Around the time this episode was airing in Australia (which would have been a year after America) there was weird stuff going on with the TV stations in my state, Tasmania. Essentially, the TV station in the south of the state had the rights to show Star Trek, and the station in the north of the state, where I am, didn’t.So we actually missed a few seasons of the show.I actually saw Best of Both worlds on VHS. I was at our local video rental place. It was called Wills and was later bought by Blockbuster when they moved into Australia. I saw they had an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation. I was missing the show so gladly hired it. It was both episodes together, edited together into a movie. And I was blown away by the epic nature of it. This wasn’t just any Star Trek episode. This was so much more intense. So much more exciting. So I never had that horrible wait they everyone describes as they waited to see if Picard would die. To find out if Earth would be enslaved by the Borg.I just watched it all back to back. So, the plan doesn’t work. Picard knew about it, so now the borg know about it. Picard’s assimilation actually gave the writers the perfect way to resolve the cliffhanger, which they hadn’t planned ahead of time. Hanson essentially declares Picard dead. It seems callous and premature, but I understand his reasoning. They have to take out that borg ship. They can’t keep thinking of Locutus as Picard. Riker already understands this. He gave the command to fire, after all. The shot of the tear falling from Picard’s eye as they complete the assimilation process speaks volumes. Even though he doesn’t appear in the episode, it’s nice to hear mention of Barclay’s name. I like little touches like that. I’ve never noticed it before. Riker and Shelby managed to sort out a lot of the conflict between them. And then the battle of Wolf 359 takes place off-screen. That makes sense, both for budgetary reasons, and also because this story follows our heroes on the enterprise. It might have been nice to see some of the battle, but this way, we got to see it in deep space nine’s pilot – Emissary.Part of me actually wants to see an extended cut of best of both worlds that incorporates some of the footage from Emissary. I wonder how seamlessly it could be edited in. We get another Guinan conversation. This time she has some wisdom for Riker. I notice that since Riker received his promotion to Captain by Admiral Hanson, he’s the fourth pip on his collar. That symbolically shows that they really don’t expect to get Picard back. They also don’t think there’s any way to get out of this situation alive. His first job as captain is to save Earth from an unstoppable enemy.Pretty tough gig for his first day as captain. The shot we get of the Enterprise flying through the wreckage of all the ships destroyed at Wolf 359 is powerful and is probably more effective than showing the battle would have been, anyway. Riker manages to distract the Borg long enough to rescue Picard. Amusingly, the borg aren’t really bothered by this. Locutus can continue to speak for them from the Enterprise as easily as he could from the cube. This is more than just wanting to save their friend. There are tactical reasons to try to access the knowledge that Locutus has of the Borg. Earth sends three fighters to intercept the cube, which dispatches them immediately. This is, to my knowledge, the only time we have ever seen Starfleet using fighters, until the Discovery season 2 finale. It’s not clear to me how exactly Picard was able to reach out to Data, and it’s never really explained. My best guess is that it was something to do with Data’s attempts to hack into the collective. Maybe he weakened some firewalls or something. The idea of implant a command into the collective through Picard is pretty cool. And the choice of ‘sleep’ as a command to tell all the drones to regenerate was very clever. I wonder if Riker’s plan to destroy the cube by colliding the enterprise with it would have worked. Given the destructive nature of a warp core breach, I suspect so.As Scotty said in The Motion Picture, when that much matter and anti-matter comes together, oh yes, we will indeed. What a relief we all felt, what triumph, as explosions began to break out along the hull of the borg cube. In typical TNG fashion, things go back to normal at the end. Shelby is off to rebuild the fleet. Picard has his job back, and Riker is likely to remain on the enterprise. But if it hadn’t happened this way. After watching this episode, I went outside and started to make-believe another option. I imagined an entire season with Riker in command as captain of the enterprise, only to finally bring back Picard at the end of that season. I guess even as a kid, I like the idea of actually making bold changes on a tv show, rather than always putting the reset button. Except….not everything is back to normal for Picard. As we linger on his face at the end of the episode, it is clear that he has been changed. His life has been impacted in a very significant way.He will never be the same again. And credit to the writers, in an age where continuity was rare, they continued to run with that. I expect that his assimilation by the borg will continue to haunt Picard as he embarks on his new adventure next year. Best of Both Worlds showed us Star Trek The Next Generation on a scale we’d never seen before. It was epic, exciting and deeply emotional. There’s a reason many people consider this one of the best. It’s been fun revisiting this with you. Thanks for geeking out with me. If you like Star Trek, you’ll probably like my Jewel of The Stars series of books. It’s about a cruise ship in space full of eager tourists. When Earth is invaded and falls to an alien armada, they can’t return home, so they flee into unexplored space. They might be the last free remnant of humans in the galaxy. in context Eric was like Kelly dropping and taking these tractors up and I actually had escorted down the mountain by two wonderful people Lindsay Vaughn and Susie Chapstick but it was Juliet and Karen are awesome so I survive it was a big thing didn't break anything didn't do anything but the our expenses were totally different you came back just on my couch that was incredible backcountry all powder and I was like oh yeah my little different I had two women sort of guiding me down the mountain the whole way so there's no shame in effect I'll even say whenever you but whenever we yeah got into our skis the first day you had planned on even making a few runs together it was snowing so hard I stopped to buckle up my helmet is safe and I looked up and Ken and the other four people that I was skiing with were gone they probably want you probably want 20 feet away from me but it was a complete wideout for the first what our we skied oh no I Don't I ended up staying in that area and like true why don't I lost everybody like it was you couldn't see your hand in front of you who not only did I not been skiing over 10 years that's not the way to start now and shout out to Blake Kingsbury for finding me he looked like a yeti lost in a snowstorm and that basically was my beacon on the way down I had no idea how to get down but dad know that was that was a great time up it to powder mountain if you like skiing snow skiing deep powder skiing you take yourself a big powder mountain we move on here a little bit to basically the news because yesterday while we were working at the Indocin or you ran up to me you said look at this study this is a little bit more in terms of what we've been talking about bore catalysts and what causes cancer I will let you take it over from there because it's pretty pretty incredible piece but thought it was so it was just published a photo so appropriate to have Mark on the show were duly talking about cancer and surviving cancer well in this just recently published in the Journal of science this month they did a study with a looked at how high fructose corn syrup actually enhances colon cancer in mice so what they did is they took the equivalent of one soda a day and they gave the mice that amount of fructose corn syrup the issue is that they had genetically engineered these mice so that they would get polyps and cancer sure which is funny because you wonder like your to be genetically engineered you never think that your to get that like I'm genetically engineered to be faster genetically engineered bigger stronger than one poor mouse is like on genetically engineered to get cancer and that's how they end up looking at these different studies so what they did as they showed that by giving the high fructose corn syrup dramatically raise the amount of polyps and cancer over 80 times the mice that were not given high fructose corn so this is with an equivalent of one soda one soda a day so it's absolutely incredible because I love your member but a year ago study came out where was looking at how the rate of colon cancer millennial's has been going to share we did a video on that on YouTube or Ricardo was we did the interpretive jujitsu and what it showed is it dealt with the millennial's were getting a higher rate of colon cancer because of obesity they should with these mice they did not become obese they did not develop metabolic syndrome it's strictly due to the fructose and the sugar that they were consumed then they were able to actually show that I take it was fructose the tumor cells love it so much that they could put a radioisotope and they could show that it just got sucked up it turns on certain genes that allows the tumor to go undetected absolutely fascinating because the fructose and that the high fructose corn syrup they believe could be very similar to others like table sugar bottom line is tumors love sugar and this is the first study that's been done were really actually look at that and it's actually fascinated Mileage Is about to Come to Clear My Throat What This Actually Shows Is Now They're Looking at How to Actually Adapt Fasting Plus Ketogenic Diet When You Have Two More Surprises If You Can Give Him Sugar That's Just Going to Absolutely Feed It like Crazy so Fascinating Study Just One Soda a Day Can Do This Just Write down A Few Things Here Because You Said A Lot Of Impressive Information so If We Were to Backtrack and We Can Take Away That Tumor Cells Love Sugar and Live They Love Circulating Glucose That's Going to Be Their Main Desired Use for Energy and That's How They Grow They Don't Have Energy They Can't Grow Something Else That You Said and There Was Was Really Captivating to Me and That Is They Were Able to Take the High Fructose Corn Syrup after Consumed and Basically Activate A Process Where the Body Could Not Detect That They Were Tumors Themselves so Not Only Were They Now Stealing the Energy so They Could Continue to Grow As a Cancer And Develop into a Bigger Tumor Diesel Tumors Now Are Being Able or Allowed to Activate Something Where They Were Basically Incognito Not Being Able to Be Detected by the Mice and Their Immune System Greg Will Exactly Actually Gets into so This Is Where I Start Getting into the Geeky Stuff Little Bit There's an Enzyme Called Keto Hexokinase Which Will Change Fructose into Fructose One Phosphate While That Turns on The Gene in the Tumor to Use the Glucose More so That's What Tells It to Absorb It More so It Actually Little Cascade and They've Actually Shown the Third Trying to Develop Drugs That Actually Block That So There's Ashley Phase 2 Clinical Trials Going on with Her Trends If They Can Block That One Little Enzyme Does That Sure so What Then The Able or Would We Then Be Able to Extrapolate That Maybe the Reason Why Millennial's Are Now Seeing an Increase In Colon Cancer Is Because Generationally Probably If We Were to Back It up Two or Three Generations We've Seen an Increase in Sugar Consumption People Believe That Sugar Is Related to Inflammation That Those Two Things Combined Together Are Now We Are Seeing an Increase in These Types of Cancers They're Being Detected Because When You Consume Any Type of Food He Goes Straight to Your G.I. Tract Would You Say That This Is Somewhat Related or Possibly Related Will That Was the Funny Part Is This Study Gets You Thinking about That Because When They When They Were This Is the First Time That We Have Seen People Having a Higher Incidence of Colon Cancer Than Their Parents Rights for Simon so It Was Speculated over It's Gotta Be Obesity It's Gotta Be the Metabolic Syndrome This Is the First One Would You Look at Something Ago Now Looks like It's the Way That Were Processing Food The High Fructose Corn Syrup Is in Everything Everything but It's Really Concentrated One Can of Soda and so the Consumption of Soda Has Increased since the 80s Significantly So Is It Our Diet That's Doing This Were Trying to Label It with Different Things Owed Sedentary Lifestyle or Possibly It Smoking or Whatever Now Looks like Our Diet Is Really Contributing to the Amount of Cancers That Were Seeing You It's Wild If You Just Look Back I Can Never Looking Back at Pictures of My Dad or My Mom Growing up and What Family Pictures Look like Whenever They Went on Vacation He Would See Everyone and All the Ancillary Players in the Photographs Around And Who They Considered to Be Overweight Back Then In the 50s and 60s and Stephen the 70s And It's Starkly Different Than the Then the Body Type so What People Look like Today and What We Consider Overweight and for Me Personally I Really Don't Even Point It Those People It's Just Our Food Supply Is so Inundated With Lots of Things That You Just Are Unaware Could Possibly Be Contributing to Natalie Being Overweight but Probably the Diseases That Maybe Are Going to Have That You Don't Even Know the Are Manifesting Right Now Unfortunately Possibly Even Colon Cancer for Millennial Becomes Really Kind of the Disheartening That They Are Actually Allowing or They'd the Insurance Companies Are Allowing Us to Screen People at an Earlier Age and They Wouldn't Do It If It Weren't In Balance with with Cost It's Always More Cost-Effective to Catch a Cancer Early Then Late so If They Are Allowing People to Not Have To Wait till 50 To Come in and Just Get Their First Screening and Now They've Lowered It Doubly 4545 and If There's a Family History of Violence Then It's 42 Start to Begin and That Was Not That Way It All 10 Years Ago for Sure It Was an End It's Fascinating Because Here I Am I Just Got This Article Yesterday You and I Were I Was Doing Colonoscopies Yesterday and I Just Started Jumping up and down Because I Realize That When Patients Go into Recovery Most of Them Are Given a Can of Soda after They Get out There Sentiment. To That Right Now Were to Put a Stop Ides I Told All the Nurses Alike No More so to Tour Patients Were Trying to Stop Colon Cancer And Were Causing It by Drinking Minnesota so We Should At Least Lead by Example Would Be Given Patients a Pack of Cigarettes with Her Leaving the Endo Center I Got Admit It Did Nobody in the Hospital System Seems to and from RT Friends at Them so I Bet If You Want to Find the Smoking Dock Just Look for the Respiratory Therapist outside of the Hospital Why That's the Same at Every Single Hospital Ultimate Training Every Hospital Billing I Don't Know Either It It's It's It's Really Kind of Fascinating Hey Before We Might Give Any Other Quick Takeaways from This Particular Study Rotates Just That This One Is Just so Impressive Because It Really Shows That the Way That We May Be Treating Cancers in General Is Wrong so I Talked to Some My Cancer.Friends of My Katie Put People in a Ketogenic Diet Greatly When the Do That No We Don't Do You Ever Use Fasting When Somebody Has Us and We've Discussed before That the Fasting Mimicking Diet Actually Has Been Shown to Improve The Effect of Chemo And Decrease the Amount of Side Effects but That's Still Not Being Implemented so Here Is One Example It Always Starts out As Animal Studies Are Which Is When Humans but I Think That This Is the First Step to Show Hey Proper Treatment of Cancer Is to Starve It Not to Just Dump a Bunch of Sugar on It Which Is What Were Kinda Doing Yeah Isn't It Interesting That Maybe Even When Your Body Is Trying to Recover from an Episode of Cancer Not Just When It's Chemo Induced but When People Begin to Lose Weight Everyone Immediately Becomes Concerned Possibly It's Sometimes the Body Just Knows What He Wants to Do And by Starving These Tumors from the Circulating Glucose Is Its First Mechanism of Defense We've Got to Stop Feeding This Is Base Leads Rogue Cell Or Whatever It Is It Happens to Be Going Out Of Control Yeah… That I Think It's Faster Oh Did You See the Speaking Fascinated to See That That's California Man Was Awarded $80 Million Because He Had 56 Acres That He Was Using Roundup for Decades $80 Million That Is so Wild That It so It's an Incredible That It It Took This Long to Find out about and We Were Spraying It on Everything so We've Got Dividing up the Deck Stacked against You If You Got a Carcinogen on Your Food Chair and Then If You're Going to Take the Corn Fructose Which the Horn Was Sprayed Right Now We've Got a Double Whammy Going on Right There You I Can or When the First Big Move in a Big Push of the Non-GMO Foods This 90 Mode Foods That and I Was Really Rather Ignorant in Terms of What That Actually Meant And It Was Really Easy to Find Detractors from People Who Were Reporting That Movement like All They're Just They're Just Afraid They Were Doing New Technology in Food Development and Etc. so Much More Than That It Comes down to Protecting You and Yourself from Carcinogens Which Can't Taste You Can't Detect You Have No Idea You Have the Healthiest Person in the World Is Exercising Not Smoking Trying to Eat Right And While They Are Eating the Foods That They Trust Such As a Great Piece of Broccoli Vegetable Actually Consuming Glyphosate or Roundup In Their Food and They Get Sick That I Read Another Article Which Showed If You're Exposed to Round up on a Regular Basis You Have over a 41% Chance of Getting Lymphoma Hodgkin's Lymphoma I Don't Know Where They Got That That I Need to Find the Actual Article but in This Particular Study They Were Referencing Ups I Think That Was Used As a Type of Cancer That That Man Got And That's Why He Was Awarded This so Probably for a Follow-Up Episode Because What We Do Here Is Always Try to Speak into the Facts and Know That We Seen the Trend on Various Types of Cancers Including Lymphoma Have Been Increasing I Just Don't Have It on Hand That We Will Tackle That Probably in a Future Episode in Terms of the Non-GMO Versus GMO Roundup Life Estate Is or Has To Be Something to Though Because You Have the Lymphoma Belt in the United States Which Is Nebraska and Iowa Run from Agronomy and That's What University Breast Is so Good at Transplants Because They're One of the First Places to Do the Autologous Bone Rail Transport Because They Were Seen so Much Leukemia and Lymphoma And They Didn't Technically Everyone Said They Couldn't Explain They Didn't Know What It Was But It's the Same Thing Is Whenever They First Figured out the Black Lung Was Kind of the Problem In Minutes It's Really No Different EE No One Created the Industry to Make People Sick but Once People Began to Get Sick It's like What's the Acclamation Here Are Just Kind Crazy Everybody's Getting Sick and You Realize It's a Sit in the Air and You It's It's Really No Different from the Time That You and I Went to Virginia We Worked in the Coal Mine That One Day Yeah with Zoo Lander Haplotype Man Man's Underrated Moving Speaking of Movies Are Yesterday's Sent Me Physically or a Mean Just by My Emotional Place Was Funny Because I Actually at the Conference We Are at 01 of the Things Was They Had a Bunch of Movie Directors That Were Actually There They Were Discussing When They Start Doing like Dr. Series Interviews When the Guest Starts Becoming Uncomfortable That's When They Get Their Best Footage and They Really Start Pushing the Boundary Right There so That No Question That Make Sense Though Because It's Gonna Be the Emotion I Said, Raw Motion Is Coming out yet Exactly so If You Can Just Get Everything That's Real Let's Put on Them or Not Billy Gilbert in the Show Here It's Somebody's Review on Some People to like the Movie That Is What It Is but It's Real So before He Finishes the Last Half Hour One of the Main Questions That We Got since Our Last Episode and That We Get A Lot on Polyphenols CBD Really Bob about Your Hobbies but the One That Really Stuck out to Me That We Had Asked I Think Six Different Times Was How Does CBD Address Anxiety and We Don't Have a Whole Lot of Time Right Now but That You Take That You Would've Drilled a Hole Show on That but Basically the Way That I Tell My Patients Is CBD Just Sort of Presses the Reset Button and Puts Everything Back in Balance and If You Think of It Anxiety Is Just an over Firing Nervous like Sensitive Nerve Always Does Is Just Calm It down like a Traffic Cop so That You Just Get All the Anxiety Is Just a Perception of Neurons Firing Right below the Extreme Version Would Be Seizure Early on Just Because Everything down Gets to Go Back to Normal Now so I Kind of Explained It to My Patients Might Just Try It If You Have a Deficiency in Your Endo Cannabinoid System Chances Are You Can Have a Pretty Good Response with Wild Thing Is the Just of Multiple Applications for Utilizing The Indo Cannabinoid System Which Everyone Has In Their Own Body Basically Resetting Just like He Said to Make People Feel Better and There's a Bunch of Different Ways to Make It Happen but Rather Than Make It Sound like a Magic Pill for Everything We Really Want to Break That down and Build Keep Those Questions Coming Dealing with Anxiety Is Something You're Going to Have Someone on a Think in about Six Weeks I Think so You and at That Point Time Will Get a Much Much Much Deeper but Any Other Applications of CBD and Questions like That Combine with Polyphenols… Gasifier Questions Because This Is Holding Figure Who Do Other Episodes Definitely What Is the Old Anybody That Swimming Towards Us Asking a Question We Want to Address It and We Have the Ability to Bring Some Experts And She Fought That for 10 Years and Multiple Servers But No Bone Cancer They Can Is It Even Common for an Older Person to Have a Bone Cancer Both Extinct It's Very Rare The Type of Cancer You're Talking about the One That You Ended up Being Diagnosed with What's Unusual about It That Involves Both Bone and Cartilage Nice Leather Coat the Deed Differentiated Type of Cancer Router Actually Goes into Both of Them There Is a KJ's Disease When You're over the Age of 60 That Can Turn into Bone Cancer but Most of the Time It's Kids That Actually Came to Bone Cancer That's Called Osteosarcoma so This Is A Completely Different One It's Very Unique Very Very Rare Well the Congress or Coma Is As Rare and That Was the Original Diagnosis from the First Biopsy Which Is like You Said Boeing and Cartledge and F They Took the Tumor out and Did a Full Biopsy Then They Decided What We Pulled out a Bunch of Homogeneous Sales at That Point in Time and so Controversial, Is Not Exactly What It Is No Matter/in This This Loaf of Bread to Define the The Real Answer and It Should Be Differentiated Which Means That They Can't Tell You Where It Came from Whether Described It to Me Was If What What's the What's the Cell in Your Body That the T Cells That Produced the The so the Osteoblast No Over-The-Counter Blessed Usually It's It's a Blast That's the Precursor No so If I Have a Cell in the Body of Stem Cell or Something That's Going to Create a Fingernail As of the Stem Cell Yeah Okay so the Stem Cell It Is Releases Sale to Become a Fingernail or Hair Follicle And That It Was It's Differentiated So It Goes from What That Stem Cell Is to the Fingernail Will It Fall Short That's the D Differentiated Part so They Don't Know Where It Came from It Ends up And All Your Organs at Some Point Time They There Wasn't There Is No Cure That They Have Found This Point They Just Keep Having Surgeries and Taken Stuff out So What You Think You Know Your 44 Years Old Got Young Kids What's Really Going through Your Brain I Mean Let's Walk Us through Somebody That Actually Unfortunately You're Still Here to Talk about It What's Going through Your Brain That You Had a Doctor Come in Well So Entry Part of the Story I'm in Amman for a Week Four Weeks Actually in a Body Cast, but I'm Laying in His Bed and Can't Move And Now Let the Bones Everything He'll And the First Time the Doctor Comes in Orthopedic Lady She Brings a Guy with Her Big 6 Foot Seven Guy Hi Mark I Want You to Meet This Guy from the Blood Bank Okay Great a Home or Not She's Always She's Just Been No She's Trained in All These Fellows She's Just This Incredible Physician Innovative Because Five Years Prior to The Surgery That She Did for Me They Just Took the Leg off Understand. So You Run Rampant Leg She Had Created and Innovated This This Particular Procedure So the Guy Comes in from the Blood Bank And He Says I Think We've Infected with HIV In One Yeah Blood Transfusion I Think We've Given Your Chubby So I'm Kind of Freak in a Little Bit of Artie Get This This Rehab This Will Be a 24 Month Rehab and Learn How to Walk and Develop a List of Internet Your Company Thanks and Thorne Legibly And the He Was Kidding Right Was a Silly Bit Series And so We Can Freaked out so It Goes Janice and I Gonna Freak out All Just This Conversation but You That I Know It's Only Kind of Well He Comes Back in 0234 Days Later and Says Ride so We've Retested Your Blood It's Not Showing up There's No Markers in Your Blood Will Continue to Test You Will Think You're Okay I Think We Have Something False Reading Which Is Probably Not Coming He's Probably Just the Messenger They Probably Have the Biggest Guy There's like Every Head Every Time We Infect Some Truth HIV-AIDS Has Represented How Often Does This Happen in That Particular Blood Bank Is like Sorry I Got a Get to Know the Room Overhearing. We Have an Assignment You So He Leaves after I Come in the Clear but This Kind of a Roller Coaster of Stuff That You Know You Had the Surgery 24 Months Now You Have a Chevy or Whatever You Get Is No Fight This Fight She Comes in a Couple Week Later Zone Brings Another Doctor and Says Hey Mark You Need to Get Your Affairs in Order Oh Because You Got about That Best Six Months to Live Unlike What Was Going on and so You Ask about What Was Going to Your Head Are You There's Denial First You Told Me HLB's Are Not Buying Your Story Anymore Now You Tell Me That I Got Six Months to Live on the Bind That Story Anymore Either And the You Know He Leaves and Then We Go through All the Scenarios over the Statistics What's Is This Legit How Do You Know Is Is a Misdiagnosis We Believe in Miracles Mistakes And He Wouldn't Talk about Any of That Stuff Just Works on a Positive Attitude No You Have Good Family Good Support Group and We Need to Pray to Whoever You Pray to And the In Order to Go As Best We Can Only Point I Would Become Polytheistic Sure Start Praying to All of Them Well and He Leaves Right and so There Is a Guy in Town Aaron Milstein Was in Town Visited Me in the Hospital and This Guy Delivers Loses Me an Error My Dad I'm 10 Crap And My Wife's Back Home And She Had Heard This in a Cigarette I'm Not Saying a Word Aaron When You Go Home You Not Saying a Word to Your Wife I Want This out to My Wife Comes Back in This Weekend and Dr. Robbie by the Way You're Gonna Deliver the News I'm Not Going to Write so He Leaves And so You Go through the Know Is Calico 5° of Separation You Denial Whatever What You Gonna Do Now Get Your Fair Share Is My Tell You That You Get Zero Liberty Anything but Your Kids And in the Lives of Things That Night I'm Laying in Bed and Talk about Having No Begin Being the Religious Was out Born and Raised in the Church and Hence Have a Pretty Good Religious Background but I'm Pitched at That Point I'm Having a Fight with God More Argument The Stages Brother and This Isn't Happening to Me And I've Got a Wife I Get Three Kids If I'm Good – I'm Okay Back but I'm Not Okay Leaving Them Alone Without Needed to Take Care Of My New Summer Influence Rest Their Life And the Time Marcus Was Third Grade and Then EAN Where like to Fit in Sync with Their Six Grade Yeah They're Not Rulon I'm And Some past Minimum Wrestling in Bed before Because I Can't Get Any Risk As I'm in so Much Pain Amount to Different Campaign I'm Fighting in Bed And, and I Asked the Doctor Early about Miracles Mistakes And I'm I'm Telling You since I'm Sitting Here Pam There's a Just Peace Washes over Me and I Was like I Got This Boot You Have To Worry about It Again from That Point on Never Thought about It Again No New That I Just Knew I Was Gonna Survive My Job Was Just to Sit Back and Let the Doctors Do What They Do Just Survive And I Never Had Another Doubt It Was Just Another Doubt When You Go to All Kinds of Different Emotions but at That Point I Can Pinpoint That Particular Night In That Particular Time Lay in My Bed That Just This Piece Just Should Just Watch the So It Was a Journey so Obviously Held That the Doctors There Was Intervention There Was Medicine Use What Was the First Step and Then Going through That Kind of Schedule Well after He Told Me Also Dine Six Months He Says Renders and Chemo Which One Part of the Original Plan And He Says If the Cancer and Get Your First Chemo Might Take You to His Close like in the Death And so Started at about 240 Pounds And Ended up at Hundred and 87 Pounds Not Hear My Head Not Eyebrow Not on Those Here Nothing to My Butt Crack Nothing Great I Got a Great Plus Track Story I'll Tell You What I Think Is Interesting It's like I Can't See Any Hair Appear Honey Get over Here and Check It Check It You Opened It up so I Got a the Story Them so Now They Get You up to Rehab Right and You Get Move in and and Running It through One of My Jobs Was to Get up Just Walked to the Nurses Station and Back And I Got This Walk and I Get This Go We Haven't Got a Nobel Drama so Don't Fall down And His Name's Alex Left That Matters but Some Walking a Little Bit And I Get a Nurse Station Come Back Think of Had a Good Day Chemo Start to Sit in This Is Going on for Several Weeks Now Now I'm Bald In Almost All My Eyebrows Nothing Else, but Record Showed That Just Run the Story Anyway so I'm Plugging along with This Little Walker and I'm Sweat Its Work And so His Squeak Squeak Squeak Is a Bad Food You Gotta Stop The Guy Gets New Tennis Shoes or Something to Those at the Time No Hearings All Messed up And so That Was Just Really Driving Me Crazy so That You Stop It's Not May Misuse Arts Week and That Is Not Me so Just Stop He Stopped and I Don't Squeak We And Alex That You Know It's Not Me Markets Coming Out Of the Words Come from Is Not Me Maybe It's the Walker That Is Not the Walker Alex to Stop so He Lets Go And We Schooley and a Wooden Walker so at This Point I Am Not Weight-Bearing on That, My Right Leg at That Point What It Happened I Had Worked up Just Enough of Us Went up That In My Butt Crack Every Time I Walked He Would Just Go So Now I Go through All This Every Stop Looking around and so Now I Know That Every Time That I Was Going to Rehab I Was in a Walking Pillow Squeaked That's When I Knew That I Had Accomplished My Goal Don't Use Workup Enough to Wash with Sweat Now Get the Squeak Going and It Was Just the Funniest Thing That I Got a Bazillion Just Hilarious Stories Out Of All This Have a Real Serious Situation but There's a There's A Lot Of Humor in It and You Have Some Humor Chair Otherwise You Know the Doctor Really Said If You Don't Have Some A Positive Attitude about Stuff and Support Your Family and I Completely Believe That Because There's so Many Things in Our Brain We Don't Know That the Brain Does Leases or Controls in You Being You Guys Mean the Doctors Will Have All That Knowledge Young at All, Intellectual Me What I'm Trying to Wrap My Brain around Is When Your Brain Said No We Got This What Did Something I Mean There's Epigenetic's Going on When No I Got This Does That Change Something in Your Body That Allows You To Have a Better Chance of Surviving a Cancer That Kills a Mindset Has To Matter Hat on It Months It's Been a Big Think about Using Somebody in the Office in the Head They Walk around Get That Permanent Frown on Her Face No They're Just Negative All the Time and They Got Those of People Walk around or Just Bouncing off the Water Happy and You Can't Tell Why Is That Is That Genetics Is That Something in Your Life Is It Just Your Attitude What Is It Your Your Physical Appearance Turns into What You're Your Attitude Becomes and If a Negative Note That the Frown on My Face Than You Can See the Body Language That Best Personality That You Become so the Survival Piece I Think Is Is A Lot Of It Is Mental and It's a Battle and If You Decide At Some Point I'm Going with This Then You Can Whip It I Can Tell You That Story but I Could Also Mean There Will Be Another Thousand Stories out There the People Didn't Survive How Do You Know I Remember after It Has a Good While after You Finished Everything You Came up with a Slogan I Think You Started to Incorporate Will Get to It Later but It Was Your Getting What You're Getting Because You've Been Giving What You Been Giving Right And That Can Go Back to Your Attitude Really in Anything Right It's That's Funny I Stole This from Zig Ziglar I Wish I Could Say I Invented or Kept It but It Wallace I Was Gonna Let You Float within the 21 When Her Water, Carried My Wife Work Foreman and Brought Home All the Tapes and so on Wasn't to Home and I Thought Just That's Just so Appropriate Because If You Give a Bad Attitude You Can Get a Bad Attitude and Return And I've Just Goofed around in Different Settings Where People Can Get into a Situation Were A Lot Of Negative Gossip Producing All the Nonsense on Social Media and in the Talking Heads in the News and the Media Nowadays You Going to Setting and Thereby Can Be Fixated on a Particular Item Have This Negative Attitude and You Just Bring One Person in There and You Start Lacing in the Loop with a Positive Attitude and You Watch the Whole Dynamics of the Room Change yet and It's Kinda Interesting Just Somebody's in the Coming Change in Attitude and Works the Same Way yet I Just Know Where to Listen or Ask Might so That's a Big Long Name for the Cancer but It's a Type of Bone Cancer but Is It That Is There Any Other Way to Describe It He's Asking If There Is Any Other Way to Scratch I Have yet Forgot What I Thought As I Have Found Art but That Is Any Other Way to Describe That Type of Bone Cancer Mark The Lie We Had a Listener Who Is Written in and Wanted to Know Better That Long Night – GD Differentiated Congress or, Yeah Indeed Differentiated You Can Convert Sarcoma Condo Sarcomas the Common Name for It but Because It's Special The Differentiated Gallic Alec up and I'll Just Text a Link Back to Them through Spiny and yet It's a It's It's Rare It Say There's Really No Other Way to Describe It Other Than You've Got This Cancer That's Crossing over between the Cartilage in the Bone and This Is Forming The Cancer That's Coming to the End of the Pelvis like That The Edges Sounds While I Equate Just Give Us a Rundown and Then of What the Activities What You Had to Do I Know They Had to Do Chemo You Had Your Surgery So Yeah so We Had 19 Our Own Record of Good Story in This So You Know Is Doctors Going for Any Kind of Surgery They Give You the Purple Pen Right Operate on the Right Knee and so As the Patient Number Right Now No Make a Mark on My Knee Right Knee So When You Go and You Don't Screw up and Mark the Light on the Left So the Plastic Surgeon Guy Comes in and He Still Me All That Were Gonna Do And They Were Going to Take 6 Cm Out Of the Middle of My Stomach All the Way down Past My Bellybutton up Got a Whole Brand-New Bellybutton by the Way And There Were No since This Backup Okay and Their Rent Their Creighton Flaps If You Think about Taking a Big Jump Folgers Coffee Cup Put Record Your Pelvis and Pushing It Always through Your Body Everything That Went into That Coffee Cup Ended up in the Trashcan Okay so You Got a Cavity There Now What Are You Going to Do so They Were Taken the 6 Cm Out Of My Lab to Put into This Flap down Here to Keep My Insides from Falling up the Backside These Pointers Right Going Right Drawing and the So I Took That Purple Pen and I Said Dr. Reese Make Sure You Leave Me a Sixpack Abs on My Stomach I've Never Had a Sixpack Abs I Thought That Was the Only Chance I Was Ever to Get It and He Did a Pretty Dang Good Job But The Orthopedic Lady Worked for 15 Hours Straight And in the Plastics Guided a Four Hour Surgery on Same Day on the Same Setting And so 19 Hours Totals, It's Amazing Crazy That Is a Long Surgery Which Is I Mean Just Absolutely Incredible Because A Lot Of Times We Talked about Where Medicine Fails but Certainly You and I Talked about That True I Feel like Medicine Could Be Doing a Better Job For Instance Controlling Diet Right Then We Have That 15 Hours Surgery That Is Incredible This Is Where It's Definitely Succeeding Yes Well You Guys There's a Reason Why They Call It You Practice Medicine Because There Is Little Perfection in It Because You're Operating on Human Body Which Is Imperfect to Begin with Right And so And We Talked a Bit Earlier How Went from from One Dr. Trying to Chase down a Diagnosis and I Feel Fairly Fortunate That Each Doctor Said I've Tried I've Made an Attempt and I'm in Have To Send You to Somebody Else and so I Kept It Referred over and over and over It Might've Been a Frustrating Situation but in Reality the Doctors Practicing What He Knows And's Finally Stops and Says I Think There's Somebody Better To Help with Your Diagnosis or Help Push You down the Track Where You Need to Be so Appreciated That That They Weren't so Egotistical That Said I Got This in the Switch Problem Is in and Sit Me down You the Wrong Path so It Was Kind of a Neat Progression That See How the Physician Community Just They Work Together Come up with Right Diagnosis at the End of the Day So Then What Were the Were There Any Other Foreign Bodies Any Other Animal Parts That Maybe You're Sporting Right Now That Didn't Just Belong to You Well So I Have Somebody Else's Pelvis and Me Okay and I Don't Know Are You Going on Animal Parts but While I'm Here Here about a Man Not Really Sure so the Good the Joke Is That They Were Looking for Similar Pelvis Same Shape Same Size the Telegraph You Know of Cadaver Bone to Bone And the Want to Find Something And They Finally Find It in the Comments Aren't We Can Do Surgery on This Particular Day Now You Don't Have a Whole Lot of Female Orthopedist Right And the Lady That's down at MD Anderson Is a Female And so I Thought That Was a Little Unusual And I in My Day Job I Do with Physicians All over the Country And so That's a Little in Common So I Go to the MD Anderson Website Liquor up And It's Black Lady Which Makes It Even More Uncommon And When You Meet Her You Go Oh My Gosh You Are Perfect for This Job You Are the Right Person She Is a Freak and Ball Buster and She Always Had All These Other Physicians Following Her around Because She Was Kind of a Pioneer in This Particular Type of Procedure so She Had Called And Finally Found the Bone Mrs. Art Room Schedule Surgery for This Particular Day How Does She Do That like Can't Even Begin Looking for a Pelvis It's Going to Fit In a Could Ever There's a Bone Bank And Oh so You – and Then Donate Your Organs and the and This Is up California and This Is Another Funny Story That I'm at a Conference That I Go to Once You're Always with You Guys In All These Vendors Are in the Know in the Exhibit Hall And I'm Talking about My Story It to This One Guy Nieces Where Did You Get Treatment Sit down in Houston in the Engine Just When Did You Do That Is It in July 2010 I Think I Know about You Simply Mean Sidwell My Wife Works at the at the the Bone Donor Place Whatever It Is Where They Freeze All the Stuff and She Was Working Going to Bone after Bone after Bone to Try to Find a Picture When It Was This Size and Had to Go to Houston and Bob Baugh And*The Chief I Was Least Found She Was Looking for Shoes As It Will This You Know Anything about the Person That I Got It from And She Says Yeah 300 Pound Black Lady So I Thought I Got This Black Doctor Working on Me I Got This Black Bone in Me and I'm Have a Soul When I Come out Here You Do Dance Better No I Do Not Either to Help Me up Here But I Forget What Your Original Question Was about Diverted into the Wrong Snow We Were Just Talking My Animal Yeah We Just Just the Different Different Graphs That You You Had to Use Mean Here's Surgery Although It We Already Know That It's Long There's There's a Process to It Is a Process to the Chemo There Was a You Had the Best Attitude but It Was Still Work but I Can Still Remember That the Months and Months of of Watching You Show up Tell Your Kids Athletic Events and Games Try to Pull the Truck As Close As You Could to the Football Field You Said You Could Watch and Participate In Family Activity and Every Time I Stop by to See You He Did All You Could to Smile and I Knew That It Was Difficult But You Made It through… Told and Believe Miracles Mistakes Not I Think I'm a Walking Living Breathing Miracle You Don't Ever Take a Single Day for Granite Because If You Have yet Sit and Think about It for Second Get Your Affairs in Order Get Six Months to Live I Think That Would Change Your Life a Little Bit The Things That You Would Miss Definitely so It Just Enhances Your Attitude There Is a Great Day Rated below When You Got to the End Of Basically Felt Okay We Are in the Clear Now We Are Now Are Counting Months an Hour to Count Years of Mark's Survival Time What Was the Turnaround Said Okay We've We Got to the End of What Were Going to Do with You What Was That Day like and Then How Did You and Susan Then Susan's Wife Is His Wife's Name by the Way Has You and Susan Then Began to Get into the Frame Set of Okay We Are Now Moving on with Our Life Everyday's a Great Day And Then Sending Our Accounting up and Yelled Me to a Year Then Is Alluded to Earlier You Made It to Five Years an Hour Already Little over Seven Right So What Was It like No One Halyards This July Night 19th 98 so I Was off the Year What Was It like to to Get to the End of Whatever Therapy That What's so I Mentioned before I Start out 240 Pounds How Is It Jim at Hundred 87 Pounds Indicator Where We Live They Have This I Didn't Have Any Idea but Had at the Time There's a Service That Would Flock Cancer Patients to and from Houston for Free Guy Would Take Any Money If You Driven to Houston It's Not the Most Scenic Drive from Dallas-Fort Worth to Houston Is, Beating Long to Yeah So He Put You in a Plain Little Private Plane to Fly and Drop You off a Millionaire Take Unicorn Delivery to the Hospital and Then Come and Pick You up When You're Done Instead of Being a Five or 6 Hour Dr. and then up in an hour and 1/2 flight which was Fantastic So to Start the Process I Was in Pretty Good Shape Other Than a King Physically Move Mentally I'm Okay But by the End of the Process Nine Months Later Shriveled Withered Enough That I Can't Physically Get Out Of Their Plane And Susan Had to Call Somebody in Town to Come Pick Me up Physically Pick Me up Put Me in My Car Because I Couldn't Do It Myself And I Member Were Driving Home And Just Exhausted And Grind and Say I Can't Do This Anymore Unfinished and He Said Either the Cancer to Get Your Chemo Going Get You At That Point I Was Done of the Chemo so We Call Them Safe Were Done And so Think with That Tortured You Enough That's Reasonable We Have Got to Finish That Story in the Next Half Hour and Then We'll Talk a Little Bit about That Talk about Anything Including Squeaky Butts Squeaky Bats Mark Did That Right off the Bat First Half-Hour Ego No Enzyme No Ego and That One at All No No No Hate Mark so We Are Rounded out the Last Half-Hour You Telling Us That You Had Been at the Point Where You're like I'm Ready to Stop Not Being Able to Get Out Of an Airplane And You Finish It up on That Story Where You Began to Emerge Out Of Therapy and and Post Cancer Treatment Will The Treatment Part Was over Now Just to to Survive So I Go Back Every For a Long Time As Every Month First Year Goes by Course Masking the Chemo Doctor Now Tell Me Statistics Many Survivors Do We Have No Who Else Is like News out There I Get Nothing They Could Be Grim Nothing You Know When I Don't Talk about That Which Have a Good Attitude We Could Move Forward Right So It's Every Month Asking the Same Question Back down Houston Finally Had Your Two Rollaround Same Questions Same Story Give Me the Same Answers Showers and a Great Attitude about Improbable Your Three Rolls around And or the Statistics And He Finally Coughs up That We Gotta Have People You Can Have a Data Backup Patient Right Now We Got a Bunch of Patient Statistically like You Tell Me Where a Man How Many of My Mother Would Get 455 Patients in Our Database And I'm Thinking I Am Not Sure That's a Statistical Analysis Enough of the Sample Size for Statistical Analysis May Be so Mean Spirit Better Than Nothing Sure but That's Only Give Me at That Point so Your Four Rolls around And I'm Beat Them up Again Whether Stats Only People like Me except Her And Get Better and Put on Weight Grumble Her Back The One Closer to Normal Aside from I Don't Have a Groin Muscle and Half of the Hamstring Muscle In Somebody Else's Pelvis and We Can so It… I've Got Some Limitations in the Things That I Physically That I Can Do And Give Many Statistics Year for He Finally Says Will You Are the Only Patient That We Have Had That Hasn't Had a Reoccurrence In the It within Four Years so to Bed Mentioned Earlier That That Then Take out the Tumor but They Don't Know Word or the Genesis of the Cancer So It It Affects All the Rest of Your Organs and He Had Said That And We Just Take out Organs As They Go on to You Can't There's More and We Can't Take out and That's It You Your Done Lights out So He Says You're the Only Case That We Have That Has Had a Reoccurrence of the for Your Mark Five Years Rolled around I Give Him the Same Questions And He's Pretty Excited That Point And He Says You Know I Think I Found the Secret Elixir to Solve This Problem He Lost His Brother to This Type of Cancer so He's, Dedicated His Life to Solving the Problem Whoa And He Says That I Think I Want to Go from 0% Success Rate To 20% So Go Seem the Following Year and How's All That Going Were the Stats Not until Manning and He Says He Is Buried I Don't Use Were Depressed but He's Not It's Jovial and As Happy As He Has Been Because He It's What He's Doing Now What He Did on Me Is Not Working on Other Patients so He Where He Thought He Had Found Some Kind of Cure to Help Some People It Had Worked so at That Point He Said We Still Have Any Documented Survivor And I'm Now at Nine Years of Be Nine Years of Some And so for Lack of And One Was Living There Anybody with This Type of Cancer They Get Funneled to MD Anderson to Take Well It's Rare Enough That I Don't Know That Everybody You Know Can Identify the Particular Type of Cancer and They End up at Anderson Sure You Know That I Feel Fortunate Enough That I Had Doctors That Said Well You Got Something's Kinda Weird Here and I Think You Need to Go on Those Centers of Excellence So My Mom Spent Middle Years Go on the MD Anderson and I Had Experience That in the Care That They Gave You There's so That's First Place I'm Going But There's Other Places in the Country That These Guys These Researchers Shared Information Back and Forth I'm Not Saying That the Dr. Robbie Had 455 Patients of His Own Don't Hate They've Collected This from from Other Clinics or Other Centers of Excellence and Greatest Database and Sharon Research So You Were Patient Number One To Make It to the Five Year Survival Mark and I Did Not See Him in January and Still Go Back Every Year But I Didn't Get Him on the Schedule So the Orthopedic Lady but This December Want to Go Back I Will Make Sure I Have Him on Schedule so I Can Give Him One More Time Right Where the Stats We Also like Me Is There Anybody Else out There That's That Surviving How Are You Doing to Your Cretin The New Elixir Saul Somebody Else's Problem It's Crazy but That's Just like When You Are down to Your Last Dollar You Don't Know How You're Going to Get Out Of the Casino And You Going to Put It on the Table and Hopefully Hit Hard Eight or Something like That so That She Could Buy the The Flight Home That Is Exactly What I Was Thinking throughout the Whole Story Yes They Can Blackjack the Whole Time That's All I Mean That's That's All and Its Outlets Actually It's Craps but so March I Whenever You Talked about the Flights down to Houston This Whole Journey Inspired You to Take up a Completely New Hobby You Still Have Your Other Job Where You Still Deal with the Orthopedists and That's Obviously Something That You've Done Well in Your Own Entrepreneurial Spirit Etc. but You Took up a Completely Different Line of Hobbies And Wanted to Tell Us Little Bit about That Well so the Guy That Runs This Nonprofit Indicator Kept Busting My Chops Marketing Learn How to Fly Needle Half-Life And Off-Line Looks like A Lot Of Fun Theoretically at Coming That Looks, Your Fighter Pilot Doing All That Stuff but When You Actually Watch What They Go through and What They Do and What They Have To Know and Learn I'm the Guy That Wants to Put the Key in the Car and Just Go Right I Don't Know All the Details and All That Other Stuff Is Just One Draft Just Want to Go and Watch Him and All the Stuff That He Does Fine so There's No Way So I Mentioned Earlier That He Wouldn't Take Any of My Money So the Only Way That I Could Give to Him Because What He Gave to Me Didn't You Get Good or Given Which Given I Decided to Volunteer They Do a Charity Bicycle Race Every Year in August a Week or so before Hotter Than Hell And We Have People to Come from All We Had Somebody from Czechoslovakia and Australia with People from All the World That Show up This By Chance And Then End up in Modern Hill in Wichita Falls Which Is Kind of a Cool Ride so These People Arrived in Sandman This Is A Lot Harder And Harder Than Help Is How to Enhance Flat You Have Some Hills to But It's Pretty Good You're Right in the Trees and on the Country and It's a Little Bit Different Anyway so I Volunteer My Time for This Bicycle Rally And of Course He's Given Me the Mark Geller How Fine You Gotta Do All the Stuff in the Next Bobbio He's Cuban But As Names Fob You And We Say Five You Think of Long-Haired Guileless on the Harlequin Romance Books and Stuff up to Another Five Euro Story This week, shortly after multi-hyphenate artist Donald Glover blew up the internet with the video for his song "This is America," Wesley and guest host Rembert Browne (New York Magazine, Grantland) explore Glover's career, and how he evolved from a likable comedian to a cultural provocateur and authority on blackness. We like Glover's brain and the music and TV he is making, but we also wonder about the speed with which he's been anointed a "genius." Who gets left out when we apply that label so liberally to men? What do women have to do to be considered geniuses? More specifically, why aren't we using that term for black women? And is there such a thing as black male privilege?Jenna will be back next week. Discussed this week: Magic Mike XXL (Warner Bros., 2015)"I'm Not Black, I'm Kanye" (Ta-Nehisi Coates, The Atlantic)"This is America" (Childish Gambino)"That Hump" (Erykah Badu)"How I Got Over" (Aretha Franklin)"For a Black Artist to Win Album of the Year, They Have to Make an Album of the Decade" (Rembert Browne, Vulture)"Miss Independent" (Ne-Yo)

Love Over Addiction
How To Tell If You Can Trust Them Again

Love Over Addiction

He had to work late and wouldn't be home for dinner. So, my three children and I sat around the table and ate lasagna and salad without him. When my blonde haired, blue eyed six year old son asked where daddy was, I told him that he was still working. The words coming out of my mouth sounded truthful, but my gut knew they were lies. I had been lied to so many times by the man I was madly in love with that I almost came to expect it. The truth was I didn’t know where my loved one was while we sat waiting for him at home. And if I was being honest with myself - I didn’t really want to know. The truth hurt too much. So I settled for the lie and we both pretended he was “working.” When trust is broken between two people, we begin to feel insecure about their love for us.  We start questioning their commitment to the relationship. We worry about how many other times they have lied in the past, and figuring out when to trust and when to protect ourselves becomes a full-time job. Some of us can take on the full-time job of Detective. Analyzing all the data and following the scent of deceit. We can even become obsessed with finding the truth, breaking our own personal boundaries, and resorting to all sorts of crazy in order to discover what really happened. Being lied to is an awful feeling.   And unfortunately, for most people suffering from addiction, it’s a habit of survival. They HAVE to lie to get away with their addiction.  If they told the truth they would have to face the consequences and that’s one word that addiction doesn't believe in. So.. where does that leave us? The ones being lied to? Can we ever trust again? How do we protect ourselves and stop living in a state of anger or anxiety? First, it’s important to set realistic expectations.   If your loved one is actively drinking, using drugs, gambling, watching pornography, or whatever their addiction might be - if they don’t have a handle on it - expect lies.   Now, there are some exceptions, but for the most part most people with addiction tendencies will fall under the category of liar. As I explained before, this disease has taught them to lie. It’s a survival tactic, part of their toolbox and comes with the addiction package. So, expect lies if you decide to stay with them. Drop the expectation they will always tell you the truth 100% of the time. Secondly, trust your gut. I can’t stress the importance of this enough.  If you think they are lying because you suddenly feel that alarm bell going off inside your stomach, your throat, your heart - wherever - trust it.   Just like lying has become part of the addict’s toolbox - lie detection has become one of your tools. You know the truth, and you don’t need them to validate your hunch. Stop trying to beat the truth out of them. It makes no difference - they know they are lying. They know you know they are lying. No more needs to be said or done about it.   If you feel the need to say anything, just let them know in one sentence or less, I’m onto you and you’re not fooling me. Then move on. Quickly. Lastly, let’s be super clear - trust is one of the necessary ingredients in any healthy relationship. If it’s compromised, your relationship begins to feel like it’s on shaky ground. If you have been lied to by the one you love who struggles with addiction, it’s natural to armor up.   Lies create an unsafe relationship, so no need to feel guilty for doubting or questioning. Ever. Don’t apologize for not trusting. People earn your trust over time and with their actions. And someone can’t expect you to trust them when they have been dishonest. We need consistency. What they say needs to line up with what they do.  And until that happens, you need to set realistic expectations, trust your gut, and forgive yourself for being untrusting.   I understand exactly how you feel.  I’ve been there and it’s not fun. But loving someone suffering from this disease doesn’t mean you need to wait for them to get sober to start feeling better.

Jill Konrath is a world-renowned speaker, trainer, consultant and author of "SNAP Selling" and "Selling To Big Companies." She says "Professional Sales Training is What Separates The Big Fish From The Little Fish In Business Success." Today's buyers are so savvy about what's out there and know they have many options and go online to find the answers they need. By the time they get to a sales person they are well-educated and may have an opinion about what they need. Sellers are still stuck in the mode of thinking they must sell and convince and that they are best but the prospect is looking to have a conversation with an intelligent person that can help them. Salespeople must educate themselves about their prospects and get in alignment with them. Drop the sales mentality and seek to serve and help them achieve the goals they are trying to reach. “Take off the stupid sales hat!” Product knowledge without sales skills is worthless. People are overwhelmed and don't want to make a change. If people are meeting with you there is a high likelihood they'll Google you. What will they see? Do you have a “job-hunter” resume on LinkedIn? It may be impressive to a VP of Sales but not to most clients. LinkedIn is a place for anyone to establish a professional appearance and show that you are a real human being to your prospect. This immediately set you apart from every Tom, Dick, and Harry out there. Rapportive ( https://rapportive.com/ ) is a great tool for looking up people online through your browser. LinkedIn is a great tool to help you find information on prospects. Jill uses a saved search for VPs of Sales in technology companies within 50 miles of Minneapolis. (Learn more about Saved Searches.) It also alerts her when there are changes at companies, which tells her when to contact them with new ideas. Don't try to connect with a hot lead at first. See if you have a contact that is connected with them and maybe even call that friend to help you connect with the hot lead. Jill has an eBook, “ Cracking The LinkedIn Sales Code ( http://www.jillkonrath.com/linkedin-sales-code/ ).” Fascinating survey on the difference between top sellers and everyone else. They: * Have really good profiles. * They research far more and far deeper. * They find multiple connections within an account. * Many are active in groups and active in groups that their targeted customers belong to. (There are groups for just about anything.) Join groups but never, ever pitch! Comment. Post interesting information. Be seen as a giver, a helper, as opposed to a taker or shark. (Check out “ Sales Wisdom From The Wild ( http://www.jillkonrath.com/sales-wisdom/ ).”) “ The Challenger Sale: Taking Control of the Customer Conversation ( http://amzn.to/179ONin ).”  Turn yourself into a resourceful person, not just a salesperson. Be a consultant leading with ideas and insight that's valuable. Cold calling still works if you do your homework. People are too busy to listen to someone that hasn't been willing to invest time learning about them prior to meeting. They are very discriminating. Cold Calling will work if you've paid your dues and done your research and crafted a message that speaks directly to the person. But it's not cold then because you've figured out what's important and how to talk to that person as an equal. It's stupid to go to straight to the top of a big company unless you're selling an enterprise solution. You need some ground-changing products or services with insight from the middle to go to the top. But how many of us sell game-changing ideas. Having a script is important and read it out loud a gazillion times but don't memorize it. Make it your own and personalized so it sounds like you're just talking. Most script writing is disgusting. They lead with themselves and their companies and are just boring. Most people have lousy scripts. In the first sentence, you need to sound like a credible resource and the second sentence has to pique curiosity then suggest a logical next step. Knowing how a product is used is more important than knowing all about the product. That helps you ask great questions. Most people haven't had sales training. They've only had product training. The game has changed and so have the customers and their expectations so it's okay to bring in outside help. Your customers are sitting with their fingers on the Delete button. The same with the phone. To set better appointments, have a better premise for setting a meeting in the first place. Just showing up to talk about your stuff makes you easy to blow off. You need to be relevant and high priority. Maybe offer to set a short initial meeting over the phone. People are hesitant to give up an hour or half an hour of their time to a stranger. So start small. So make sure your time is done well. Treat receptionists and executive assistants the same way you treat the decision maker. Focus on business issues. Leave a voicemail and a good message that follows the same pattern if you got them on the phone. Establish credibility and pique curiosity and suggest a time to get together and reference that you're going to send an email. Be creative with leaving a series of emails if the prospect is a big enough opportunity. Don't cram all of your information into one voicemail. If you have three bullet points leave three messages. I don't use war analogies in sales but if you see an opportunity you need to plan on 8-10-12 touches. People are so busy they may just arbitrarily delete even a wonderful message. Send links to articles, a link to a PDF…just keep going until the campaign has run out. And call on multiple people.
