Sincerity, Transience, and the Domestic Focus of Berthe Morisot's Art. Sebastian Smee discusses how the Impressionists' defining characteristic was plein air painting—painting outside directly in front of the subject. Berthe Morisot was highly innovative, concentrating on women at home doing ordinary, domestic activities. Her work was quick, often using only a few brushstrokes, conveying the impression of a moment glimpsed. Morisot was one of the most radical Impressionists in her style, frequently leaving large parts of the canvas bare to emphasize the feeling of something "quickly caught as if on the fly." Smee identifies her as a "real poet" of fugitive effects and threshold states, often painting adolescent girls at the "cusp of adulthood." Her acute awareness of life's transience and fragility was evident in her style.

If you need to hire one person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world has the hustle and grit to deliver. My guest: James Clear is the author of one of the most influential books of our generation, Atomic Habits. He's sold over 25 million copies worldwide and has helped millions of people transform their lives through the power of small changes. We brought the podcast to the campus of Ohio University, where we recorded live in front of 250 of the most impressive college students I've ever met. Notes: I loved the Morgan Housel moment - It was cool to see James' reaction to it (you can watch it on YouTube.com/RyanHawk). Morgan said, "I have absolutely not a single cell of envy for him. Because he is the nicest guy you will ever meet. You will not meet a nicer human than James Clear. You will not meet someone as successful as he is and as humble as he is. He is a saint in my life. And because of that, I adore every bit of this guy, so I cannot envy him. I am just inspired by his success, full stop." We should all strive to be that for the people in our lives. Your WHO - "Every opportunity in life comes through a person. Relationships are usually the most important thing. If you want to achieve more, there is a relationship that can unlock better results. If you want to make a meaningful contribution, helping others is a great way to do it. If you sim Willpower – 'People with tremendous self-control aren't that different from those who struggle. They're simply better at structuring their lives in a way that doesn't require heroic willpower.' It's not about determination, it's about design. That's liberating. Fall in Love with the Process - "When you fall in love with the process rather than the product, you don't have to wait to give yourself permission to be happy. You can be satisfied anytime your system is running. And a system can be successful in many different forms, not just the one you first envision." Make It Obvious, Easy, Attractive, Satisfying - The four laws of behavior change: make good habits obvious and bad habits invisible, make good habits easy and bad habits difficult, make good habits attractive and bad habits unattractive, make good habits satisfying and bad habits unsatisfying. Use the Two-Minute Rule - Scale any habit down to something that takes two minutes or less. Want to read more? Read one page. Want to run a marathon? Put on your running shoes. The goal is to master showing up and make the entry point as easy as possible. Standardize Before You Optimize - You can't improve a habit that doesn't exist. Master the art of showing up before worrying about optimization. Build consistency first, then work on increasing the dose or improving performance. Track Your Habits Visually - I use a paper clip strategy: start each day with 120 paper clips in one jar, move one to another jar each time I complete a writing session. Visual tracking provides clear evidence of progress and makes the habit satisfying. Habits Need to Match Your Personality - There's no one-size-fits-all approach. Morning people and night owls need different strategies. Work with your natural tendencies, not against them. Choose habits and contexts that align with who you already are. Create Commitment Devices - Make bad habits difficult through commitment devices. I had my assistant change my social media passwords every Monday and only give them back on Fridays. This eliminated mindless scrolling during my productive work hours. Focus on Systems, Not Goals - Winners and losers have the same goals. The difference is their systems. Goals are about the results you want to achieve; systems are about the processes that lead to those results. Fall in love with the process, not the outcome. Build Habits That Align With Your Desired Identity - I wanted to be a writer, so I wrote every Monday and Thursday for years. Eventually, I had proof. I couldn't deny I was a writer because of the body of work I'd created. Your habits are how you embody your identity. The Plateau of Latent Potential - We expect progress to be linear, but it's not. Habits often appear to make no difference until you cross a critical threshold. You need to persist long enough to get through the plateau and break through to the other side. Reduce Friction for Good Habits - I want to work out more, so I lay out my workout clothes the night before. When I wake up, they're the first thing I see. The easier you make the habit, the more likely you are to do it. Increase Friction for Bad Habits - Want to watch less TV? Unplug it after each use and put the remote in another room. The added friction makes the bad habit less appealing and gives you a moment to make a better choice. Automate Good Decisions - Technology can lock in good behavior. I set up automatic transfers to my investment account. Once the system is in place, the good behavior happens without requiring willpower or decision-making energy. Student Questions On Building Habits in College - The mess of college is actually useful because you're forced to figure out who you are. Use this time to experiment with different habits and see what sticks. You have more flexibility now than you will later in life. On Breaking Bad Habits - Trying to eliminate a bad habit without replacing it with something else is really hard. The more sustainable approach is habit substitution. If you want to stop scrolling social media, replace it with reading for five minutes instead. On Staying Consistent - Never miss twice. Missing once is an accident; missing twice is the start of a new habit. Elite performers aren't consistent because they're more disciplined—they have better strategies for getting back on track quickly when life happens. On Finding Your Purpose - I think the idea of finding your purpose is misleading. You don't find your purpose; you build it through the habits you practice daily. Your life is essentially a collection of your habits, so if you want a different life, build different habits. On Overcoming Setbacks - After my accident, I had to redefine what success looked like. Sometimes progress means recovering what you lost rather than reaching new heights. Focus on what you can control today rather than what you wish you could control. On Reading and Learning - I read across many disciplines because insights often come from connecting ideas from different fields. Read widely, take notes, and revisit those notes regularly. The goal isn't to finish books—it's to find ideas that change how you think. On Building a Writing Practice - I published twice per week for years before anything took off. Most people overestimate what they can accomplish in one year and underestimate what they can accomplish in ten years. Show up consistently and let time do the heavy lifting. Reflection Questions Are you focused on achieving goals or building systems? What's one process you could improve this week that would make your desired outcomes more likely? What's one habit you want to build? Can you make it so easy that you can't say no—something that takes two minutes or less? How can you design your environment to make this habit obvious and attractive? Which of your current habits align with the identity you want to build? What small votes can you cast today through your actions to prove to yourself who you want to become? People pleasing - we've all seen it before (whether we recognized it or not) - constantly being agreeable, always saying yes, never setting any boundaries - all to the point of self-destruction. If you haven't experienced it yourself, it's likely you've witnessed someone else demonstrate these behaviors. And although it may have short-term benefits, we know that these self-destructive tendencies are not sustainable, and can lead to mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion and burnout. If this is something you think you might struggle with, or if you know someone who does, today's episode provides a wide variety of perspectives on what “people pleasing” can look like in the day to day world, a number of root causes, and a handful of different solutions you can use to help you manage these behaviors. More specifically, I dive into: Quotes that hit - some of the most impactful sound bites I've heard on the topic What drives you? How our drives can lead us into unhealthy people pleasing behaviors The downside to many of the mainstream self-help resources that address the topic The necessary self-reflection that has to take place before we can make long-lasting behavioral changes Referenced Resources: E210: Assertiveness: How To Ask For What You Want & Get What You Need E207: How Perception Impacts Communication & Relationships E208: Robert Greene: Mastering Human Nature and Facing Your Flaws E200: What To Do When Trying To Help Makes Stuff Worse E176: When Positive Thinking Doesn't Work E22: The Value of Self-Doubt E130: How Understanding Drives Helps Build Buy-In Quiz: What Drives You? How has rational choice theory come to dominate both our understanding of the world and our view of good judgment, and why is that a problem? What are the benefits of remembering to zoom in and out to get a better picture of problems and solutions? Why do we prefer reducing things to numbers even if that abstracts useful levels of data?Barry Schwartz is a professor Emeritus at Swarthmore College and the prolific author of many books. His latest titles include Choose Wisely: Rationality, Ethics, and the Art of Decision-Making and Wisdom: How to Discover Your Path in Work and Life.Greg and Barry discuss the limitations of rational choice theory, the importance of practical wisdom, and the role of judgment in making decisions. They also touch on the broader implications of rational choice theory across various fields, the history of economic and social science paradigms, and the necessity of incorporating ethical considerations into people's decision-making. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:The way we think about the world changes the world10:47: The argument in the book [Choose Wisely] was, the way we think about the world changes the world. And it is true that the way we think about the world changes the world, but it changes the world materially. It does not just change the world because of the ideas we have running around in our heads; it changes the material world. Yeah. The factory did not exist, and then it did. And as a result, what it meant to work changed. That was not in our heads. That was, you know, a structure that was out in the world that made demands on the people who walked in the door every day. So it was not idealism. The argument was that ideas change not just how people think, but what kinds of things people are able to do. And I think the same thing is true with rational choice theory, though it is a bit more abstract. You know, you cannot do a rational choice analysis without being able to quantify. Why we can't game the way to design incentives14:16: People somehow think that there is a bulletproof way to design incentives, so that they will not distort why they gave us the incentives they are designed to encourage. And, the bad news is there is no such thing, and there is no system that cannot be gamed. How economics changes the way we think07:22: There is a general, more general problem in social science, which is that, unlike planets, people are affected by claims that are made about what they are like. And so, the more we read social science, and the more economics, the king of the social sciences, dominates the news, the more inclined we are to think like and act like economists. So, does this tell us that the economists have discovered something? No. I mean, maybe. But it is just as likely that what economists have done is create something. They have created a way of approaching decisions and value assessment and so on that is consistent with their framework and changed people as a result. What we miss when we measure everything42:15: Rational choice theory is not neutral about what stays in the frame and what goes outside it. Things that go outside the frame are the ones that are most difficult to quantify using the same scale that you are using for everything else. And so, in the case of the price of a pound of beef, you could add the amount of money that our taxes contribute to subsidies. You could factor in the costs of the fertilizers that enable the corn to grow enough so that the cows can get fattened up. How do you quantify exactly the cost to human health? You can do it. How many more dollars do we pay per year because of antibiotic-resistant bacteria? But does that capture the cost in health? No. It only captures the dollar cost in health.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Rational Choice ModelDaniel KahnemanReinforcement LearningB. F. Our book this month is "The Art of Saying No" by Damon Zahariades. Zahariades begins with a sobering analysis of why this simple, two-letter word is so cripplingly difficult for so many. He posits that our cultural conditioning, our deep-seated need for approval, and an often irrational fear of conflict combine to make "yes" the path of least immediate resistance. This path, however, leads invariably to the dark wood of resentment and burnout. The true value of The Art of Saying No lies in its transition from diagnosis to action. Zahariades provides a robust, immediately deployable toolkit of refusal strategies. He understands that one cannot simply begin shouting "NO!" at one's colleagues and loved ones. It requires finesse, a degree of social judo that redirects the requestor's energy without causing undue damage to the relationship. He advocates for the concept of the "Guilt-Free No," a refusal delivered with kindness and clarity, often accompanied by a brief, non-negotiable explanation. The key, he correctly identifies, is to separate the person from the request. You are not rejecting your friend; you are rejecting the additional commitment that robs you of your time. -------------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)
Is the “paranormal” real—or just a twisted version of the supernatural? In Week 4 of The Unseen Realm, Pastor Josh McPherson builds a simple, biblical grid to discern everything from zombies, vampires, witches, ghosts and UFOs to fortune telling and “haunted” spaces.Big IdeasGod / not God: Creator vs. created—no third category. One reality, two realms: Seen and unseen under God's rule.Only two sentient beings: Angels and humans (with fallen angels = demons). What God creates, Satan counterfeits: Zombies vs. resurrection, vampires vs. Christ's blood, witches vs. God's Word, “ghosts” vs. the Holy Spirit.Paranormal = demonic memes designed to deceive, distract, and detour you from Jesus.Key Questions AnsweredCan we talk to the dead? (Luke 16:19–31) Short answer: No.Can a house be haunted? (Luke 11:14–28) What to do if you suspect dark residue. What is fortune telling? (Acts 16:16–18) Why it's demonic parlor tricks, not prophecy. What should Christians do after a paranormal encounter?Discern the spirits (1 John 4:1–3)Declare Christ's victory (Col. 1:13; 2:15)Draw near to God (James 4:7–10)Scriptures 1 John 4:1–3; Luke 16:19–31; Luke 11:14–28; Acts 16:16–18; Colossians 1:13; Colossians 2:15; James 4:7–10; Genesis 3; Revelation 12For Parents & Leaders Pastor Josh discusses the “reject / receive / redeem” framework and why some practices (like Halloween's roots) may be poor candidates for “redemption.”Next StepsIf you're wrestling with fear, nightmares, or spiritual confusion: open God's Word, play some worship music, pray in Jesus' name, and invite a trusted believer to pray with you.Share this message with a friend who's captivated by the paranormal—but hungry for truth.Follow for the rest of The Unseen Realm and the upcoming Art of War (spiritual warfare) series.Support the showThanks for listening! Send us a textIn this episode, I talk about one of the most emotionally testing times in pregnancy — the waiting game. When your due date is approaching, or has come and gone, it can feel as though the world is on pause while everyone keeps asking, 'Have you had the baby yet?' I explore what this waiting period can really feel like — the impatience, the frustration, and the mental tug of war that happens when your baby still isn't ready to arrive.I also talk about the pressure that can build when conversations about induction of labour start, and how those offers can influence how you feel about your body, your baby, and the timing of birth. We chat about the idea that 42 weeks is often considered the outer limit of pregnancy — but how that's not true for everyone. For many women, birth can unfold safely and beautifully beyond that point. Still, talking about 42 weeks helps shift the focus away from the growing trend of early induction at 39 weeks, which can interrupt the natural rhythm of both mother and baby.I also share some of the incredible support available during this time from myself, Shellie Poulter, and Kemi Johnson, who all offer services to help women navigate these later stages of pregnancy with confidence and calm. I'll include their links below. If you're currently waiting — or supporting someone who is — this episode will help you find reassurance, perspective, and patience in those final days. Your baby will come, and how you navigate this time matters just as much as the birth itself.Mentioned in this episode:✨ Shellie Poulter – Instagram Website✨ Kemi Johnson – Instagram Website✨ My Own Birth Support Services - InstagramIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. Fiber artist Mary Anne Wise first went to Guatemala hoping to collect local textiles and inspire her own practice. Just one visit wasn't enough, and she visited several more times, eventually offering a class in rug hooking to local women artisans. Although the women didn't have a rug-hooking tradition, they did have abundant material: tons of tee shirts from “donations” that are often shipped to the area, discarded, and burned. After the success of that first class, the idea of creating a cottage industry that would benefit women throughout Guatemala took hold. Called Multicolores, the project is now a nonprofit organization officially recognized in Guatemala. The women join the program to support their families and improve their living conditions. And although many of them cannot read or write, all have something to say through the work of their hands. Mary Anne developed a curriculum of design principles that helped the women market their work in the international market. Although some are also weavers, not all of the women were producing textiles before joining the program. Drawing on family stories and cultural influences as well as their own imaginations, they design hooked rugs and other pieces that find their way to buyers around the world. Mary Anne and her coauthor, Cheryl Conway-Daly, told the story of Multicolores in a book, Rug Money. In the United States, drawing on their love of fabric and experience in interior design, Mary Anne and a friend decided to start a home goods shop specializing in artisan cloth. Based in Wisconsin, Cultural Cloth offers the handwork of artisans not only from Multicolores but from 30 countries worldwide. Although they have sold the shop to new owners, Mary Anne continues to work there one day a week . . . and the inspiration for her own fiber art that initially led her to Guatemala has begun to rise again. The Celebration Celebration: A Tour Through the Tours of Madonna!
“Art should be dangerous. That's when it's real.” – MadonnaIn this episode, we explore the chaos, controversy, and creative bravery of Madonna's darkest, boldest, and most combustible film work. From the gritty downtown art-scene roots of A Certain Sacrifice to Abel Ferrara's raw, meta-cinematic Dangerous Game, these are the moments when Madonna started playing with fire. (metaphorically speaking, that is)We also discuss the upcoming Bedtime Stories - The Untold Chapter, her podcast interview with Jay Shetty, and her screen test for the TV show Fame! She's gonna live forever, and we're all just lucky to watch her burn!
