We're in the midst of an epidemic and it's gradually killing us. One of the biggest contributors to overall health has little to do with how well you adhere to “eating every color in the rainbow,” how many acres of pasture the meat you eat has roamed on, how dedicated you are to your fitness regimen, how many steps you take throughout a day, the number of hours you don't spend sitting at your desk, or even the amount of time you spend practicing gratitude. Yes, all those factors are indeed important components of a well-rounded approach to optimal health and wellness — but each of them would amount to little if you are not consistently getting deep, restorative sleep. Boomer Anderson is creator and podcast host at Decoding Superhuman, which uses performance analysis, behavior change, and technology to help clients optimize their health. After nine years in the investment banking industry, Boomer left his successful career to pursue his obsession with maximizing performance. Unsatisfied with broad health generalizations, Boomer developed the Decoding Superhuman methodology to provide an individualized approach to performance backed by science and data. What are circadian rhythms and why are they so important?  We fall asleep due to the gifts of the pineal gland, a small ant-sized lobe near the middle of our skull in the interbrain. Following our circadian rhythm, the pineal gland secretes a neurotransmitter and hormone called melatonin. Melatonin suppresses the activity of other neurotransmitters and helps to calm the brain (in part by countering the stress hormone cortisol from our adrenal gland). And as we become drowsier, the brain slowly begins to turn off our voluntary skeletal muscle functions, so we do not move around too much and try to act out our dreams or disrupt the body's internal revitalization work. (Note this is also why it is so hard to move your limbs or shout out in response to a nightmare.) For ideal sleep, melatonin should be rising steadily, and cortisol should be rock-bottom low at bedtime. But there is a catch: the pineal gland secretes melatonin largely in response to darkness. And our evening cortisol levels are lowest in environments with low noise. With our addictions to TV, video games, and email in the evening, however, our choices can get in the way of these natural pro-sleep chemical shifts. How do you train yourself for better sleep? The first thing you want to do to regulate your sleep rhythm is get your light cues on track. In the morning try to give yourself exposure to blue light, ideally sunlight. This helps raise cortisol in the morning and get your body into a logarithmic curve. Meditating during the morning can also help you to regulate stress for the rest of your day. Your evening routine is also incredibly important. Look at your light and make sure you are transitioning into mostly red light in the evening. Ease into less stressful activities such as a casual TV show and then a book — avoid thrillers, though. Set up a good sleep environment and keep electronics out of the bedroom. -- Resources: Learn more at http://www.decodingsuperhuman.com (decodingsuperhuman.com) Connect with GUEST NAME: https://www.facebook.com/decodingsuperhuman (Facebook) | https://www.instagram.com/decodingsuperhuman/ (Instagram) https://troscriptions.com/products/justblue (troscriptions.com/products/justblue) https://troscriptions.com/products/bluecannatine (troscriptions.com/products/bluecannatine) Use code REBEL for 10% off your Troscriptions order https://www.sleepfoundation.org/circadian-rhythm (What is Circadian Rhythm?) Brian Gryn is a personal trainer who has had some great success with intermittent fasting, both for himself and his clients. He was initially inspired when he became frustrated by his inability to achieve the same results in the gym at age 38 as he did at 28. He started with the simple strategy of pushing his breakfast back an hour at a time until he was able to comfortably adjust to eating his first meal at around noon. Consequently, Brian typically ends up eating only two meals a day. Brian and Brad discuss an assortment of common sense tips to make fasting work for you. In particular: Be strict with your exercise so you don't have decision fatigue and retain the will power needed every day to stick with your plan Move around and keep busy during your fasting periods to make time fly by faster Clean up your diet so you can minimize glucose spikes and insulin crashes Make sure your dietary practices are a smooth fit into your busy life How Does Intermittent Fasting Work? Intermittent fasting is the voluntary abstaining from food for a certain period of time depending on the individual. We all fast naturally, such as when we are sleeping. This is just a way to shrink our eating window and keep us from grazing throughout the day. What Are the Methods of Fasting? 16/8 (8 hour eating window) 20:4 (4 hour eating window) 5:2 (eat 5 days fast 2 days) 36-hour fast Alternate Day  Extended Fasting The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting: Can help you lose weight and belly fat Changes the function of cells, genes and hormones Can reduce insulin resistance, lowering your risk of type 2 diabetes Can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the body Induces various cellular repair processes Good for your brain, boosts brain function and mental clarity -- Resources: Learn more at https://briangryn.com/ (briangryn.com) https://www.21dayfastingchallenge.com/challenge-c (21 Day Intermittent Fasting Challenge) Connect with GUEST NAME: https://www.facebook.com/getleanandeatclean/ (Facebook) | https://www.instagram.com/21dayfastingchallenge (Instagram) Visit https://thisishuso.com/rebel (thisishuso.com/rebel) and use the code REBEL25 to save $25 Get my free Lab Tracker Report by texting REBEL to 66866 Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living? He’s written four sole authored books, Children’s Mathematical Development (1994), Male, Female (1998, 3nd edition release August, 2020), Origin of Mind (2005), and Evolution of Vulnerability (2015), one co-authored book, Sex Differences (2008), and co-edited a five-volume series on Mathematical Cognition and Learning. In addition, he has published about 325 journal articles and chapters and has had extensive funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation for his empirical research. He served on the President’s National Mathematics Advisory Panel from 2006 to 2008 and chaired the learning processes task group, and was appointed by President G. W. Bush to the National Board of Advisors for the Institute of Educational Sciences, U.S. Department of Education (2007 to 2010). His current sex differences work is focused on sex-specific deficits associated with chronic exposure to stressors, using Darwin’s sexual selection and the evolution of condition-dependent traits. These traits, such as the peacock’s tail, have been exaggerated over evolutionary time based on competition for mates and mate choices. Condition-dependence means that they are the first to deteriorate when exposed to stressors, such as poor nutrition, chronic disease, and toxins. At the most fundamental level, condition-dependent expression of these traits might be dependent on the efficiency of mitochondrial energy production. Guest Name and Bio: Dr. Charles Brenner Dr. Charles Brenner is the Roy J. Carver Chair and Head of Biochemistry at the University of Iowa, as well as a founding co-director of the University of Iowa Obesity Initiative. In 2004, Brenner, then a faculty member at Dartmouth College, discovered nicotinamide riboside (NR) to be a vital precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), which is made available by nicotinamide riboside kinases (Nrks) that are conserved between yeast and humans. In 2007, Dr. Brenner’s lab discovered a second pathway by which NR is converted to NAD+ and showed that NR can extend the lifespan of yeast cells by virtue of elevating NAD+ levels and increasing the activity of the NAD+-dependent Sir2 enzyme. In the past decade, Dr. Brenner has made multiple seminal contributions to NAD+ metabolism, which include engineering a yeast strain to convert inexpensive NAD+ precursor vitamins into NR, solving the crystal structure of human Nrk1, developing the methods for quantitative NAD+ metabolomics, and demonstrating the activity of oral NR in animal models of fatty liver disease; obesity; type 2 diabetes; diabetic and chemotherapeutic neuropathy; heart failure; and central brain injury. Dr. Brenner also led the first clinical trial of NR, which established safe oral availability in humans. He is currently focusing on the maternal and neonatal effects of oral NR and translating animal discoveries into evidence-based safe, human clinical practice for human conditions of metabolic stress. Unconventional Genius
Ross Baird, Author & Founder of Village Capital on The Innovation Blind Spot

Unconventional Genius

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 14, 2017 31:52

While it seems like the key to becoming a successful entrepreneur is having a great idea, you also have to have money. But If you’ve got a winning idea, getting financing should take care of itself, right? As you’ll find out during my conversation with Ross Baird, Founder and President of Village Capital, and author of the book “The Innovation Blindspot: Why We Back the Wrong Ideas and What to Do About It," it is not always that simple. In order to raise capital, you have to be able to connect with investors. And that means avoiding innovation blind spots that are common with venture capitalists. Ross Baird wants to help investors see the vast opportunities available outside of their typical, limited scope. In this episode, Ross sits down with me to discuss his new book and to share how he’s making a lasting impact by helping investors eliminate some of those innovation blind spots in their approach to Venture Capitalism. You don’t want to miss this conversation. How innovation blind spots create limited opportunities for entrepreneurs As I was talking with Ross, I found myself thinking back more than 10 years ago to when I founded the Max Borges Agency. I had some reservations about growing a consumer tech PR agency in Miami because our offices were not in Silicon Valley or New York City. Ross says that's a concern too many entrepreneurs face because of the innovation blind spots many investors have. "80 percent of venture capital goes to New York, California, and Massachusetts," he says.. "Professional investors have trained their minds to think good ideas only come out of a few locations and industries. We think in society that resources flow to their best and most productive uses.” As I discovered in our conversation, that is not always the case. Be sure to listen as Ross explains why this is a huge problem for entrepreneurship. Investing should be more like college sports recruiting Ross shared with me that he believes too many investors approach their jobs like stock pickers - they're only looking for the next sure thing based on historical trends. This type of innovation blind spot causes many investors to miss out on star entrepreneurs that could really make an impact. He thinks they should instead model their approaches after college basketball and football coaches."If you go to any neighborhood anywhere in the U.S., whether it's rural North Dakota or inner-city L.A., if there's are kids with the potential to be an athlete. That’s why by the time they are ten years old, college recruiters know their names. There's a multi-billion-dollar industrial recruiting complex to discover athletes. Investors need to spend the same amount of time investing in their pipelines," says Ross. Hear about this unique approach to investing and how Ross is applying it to his own business in this week’s episode. 3 qualities of successful entrepreneurs Ross and his colleagues are working to eliminate innovation blind spots and widen the narrow lens that professional investors use to identify entrepreneurs. He does not want location, education, or economic backgrounds to disqualify anyone with a great idea from pursuing his or her dreams. He shares with me three qualities common to most successful entrepreneurs that he recommends anyone thinking of starting a business should embrace. These three characteristics can help entrepreneurs better position themselves for investment and success. Be sure to listen to our conversation to hear about these three unique characteristics. Removing innovation blind spots opens up a world of new possibilities The Max Borges Agency is a consumer tech PR agency, but we do not limit ourselves to partnering only with companies based in the Valley. We know we would be shutting ourselves out of the opportunity to work with some amazing companies. That's the same line of thinking Ross had when he founded Village Capital almost ten years ago. Ross Baird is leading Village Capital to find and invest in great entrepreneurs with great ideas who most investors are not paying enough (or any) attention to. And he’s trying to help other investors identify and reduce their innovation blind spots so that a more diverse group of entrepreneurs have a shot at success. Hear all about this and more during our conversation on this week’s episode of Unconventional Genius. If you are with a consumer technology company planning to launch a new product at CES, or are even looking ahead to CES 2019, the Max Borges Agency can help you succeed.
