Millions of dollars in federal grants have been terminated, throwing cutting-edge research at American universities into crisis. On this week's On the Media, meet the two men at the center of the fight over the future of academia.[0:00] Harvard president Alan Garber and National Institutes of Health director Jay Bhattacharya are at the heart of the national fight over the future of academia. Alan Garber has been cast as the defender of academic freedom and democracy; Jay Bhattacharya is Donald Trump's pick to lead the NIH, the agency withholding billions of dollars in research grants from Harvard. Oddly enough, the two men go way back: Garber was Bhattacharya's undergraduate thesis adviser and mentor in the late 1980s. The two offer some common sense perspectives about things we may have been socialized to believe that are no longer true (White looks just as good in the winter as it does in the Summer) and some that we have been socialized to believe that were actually never true (sugar belongs in a lot of places…just not grits). Lady, tap in on Instagram and let us know which opinions you have that would get you cancelled (respectfully)! Most of us have a daily plan that includes a routine of productive habits. Sometimes the plan happens. And you have a few days, maybe even a week of things running smoothly. Then there is an interruption. And all of the sudden days have gone by and your plan hasn't happened at all. At the top of this list is often our habits regarding eating and exercise. In all our areas of life where we seek to develop good habits and get better results, there is new information that the areas of diet and exercise don't work like the others and are the areas we most fail, because, life happens. This new information is brought to us by Dr Michelle Segar who sat down with a couple of years ago. Michelle takes our cultural concept of habits to task. We're going to talk about her groundbreaking, decision-making framework—and the science behind it—to give hope to the millions of what she calls, “unhabiters,” who are frustrated with their failure to keep up all the good habits they intend to engage with, and discuss a behavior-change solution designed for them. We are enamored with creating habits in our lives that will give us the success we want, but what you're about to find out is the normal framework and perspective of habits we have doesn't work for…a lot of us. But there is a solution that will, and it's why I have Michelle on the show. Michelle is an award-winning, National Institute of Health funded sustainable behavior change researcher at the University of Michigan and a lifestyle coach. For nearly three decades, she has pioneered methods to create sustainable healthy behavior changes that are being used to boost patient health, employee well-being, and even gym membership retention. What do you do when your health changes and the business you've built can't keep up?In this episode of Business with Chronic Illness, I sit down with Jemi Crookes, founder of The Think Lab, to talk about what happens when a diagnosis forces you to redefine leadership, business, and success itself. After a misdiagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, Jemi discovered she was actually living with Type 1.5 (LADA)—a rare form of autoimmune diabetes that upended everything she knew about her body, her energy, and the way she worked. She left her corporate executive role and rebuilt her business from the ground up, using AI, authentic leadership positioning, and personal branding to create more freedom and less burnout. In This Episode You'll Learn:✅ How Jemi turned a life-changing diagnosis into a business that supports her health✅ The difference between corporate leadership and capacity-honoring leadership✅ Why "your job title is rented, but your leadership is forever"✅ How to use AI as a tool (not a replacement) for your positioning and time✅ What it really takes to build a brand rooted in your values and lived experience✅ The mindset shifts that allow you to keep growing—even when your energy fluctuates✅ Why you can't position yourself (even if you're a strategist) and who can help✅ How advocating for your health teaches you to advocate in businessYou'll hear how Jemi learned to trust her intuition when doctors got it wrong, design business models that flex with her energy, and help other women leaders build brands that can thrive, no matter what life brings next.A gift from Jemi, our guest - Custom GPT tool: SO FUN!!!! https://chatgpt.com/g/g-67d37e2edbf48191b062e108c6bb1994-tf-leadership-intro-ida

Dive into the science of training intensity with Stacy Sims, who's here to explain why the RPE scale (Rate of Perceived Exertion) is your most reliable metric, and how concepts like "moderate exercise" can be misleading.  You'll learn how to effectively use stress to build fitness and the importance of a foundational base before pursuing maximum-effort workouts KEY TAKEAWAYS: RPE is Key: The Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale is an essential tool for measuring how hard your body is working. A "10 out of 10" effort is when you are physically stopped and "literally can't do anything more" (the "vomit scale"). The Vague "Moderate": "Moderate intensity" is a general guideline for the public, often representing a "gray zone" that may not optimise results for people with a training history. Foundation First: Building a base of fitness is crucial, especially as you age, before engaging in high-intensity work, as pushing too hard too soon can reveal underlying health issues. The Power of Stress: Movement is medicine, and the body requires stress (like high-intensity bursts) to adapt and survive well, pushing it out of its comfortable, algorithmically flat existence. TIMESTAMPS AND KEY TOPICS: Defining the RPE Scale (0-10) for Workouts 4:32 - 6:01 Pacing and Intensity for 4-Minute Intervals 6:01 - 6:53 Clarifying "Moderate Intensity" Exercise 7:06 - 8:05 High-Intensity Training and Health Screening 10:49 - 12:47 VALUABLE RESOURCES Join The High Performance Health Community Click here for discounts on all the products I personally use and recommend A BIG thank you to our sponsors who make the show possible: Podcast Exclusive Discount on Carol Bike with code ANGELA ABOUT THE HOST Angela Foster is an award winning Nutritionist, Health & Performance Coach, Speaker and Host of the High Performance Health podcast. Pennsylvania Democrats made significant gains in Tuesday's election – even in places that strongly supported Donald Trump last year. Four members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives are preparing to leave their seats after winning local races. Now that election day voting is over, the next task for election officials in Pennsylvania is to officially certify the results. PA Secretary of State Al Schmidt says that process should take about 2 weeks. Health providers and emergency rooms in Philadelphia have seen an uptick in seizures among patients who use street drugs. Fathers are often left out of maternal and child health decisions but a bill which has been passed by the state House aims to change that. And a deep dive: Health systems across Pennsylvania are rapidly adopting artificial intelligence to aid them in administrative tasks like medical documentation and in clinical settings with imaging and diagnostics. But as the technology quickly evolves, clinicians, lawmakers and patient safety experts are trying to figure out how to monitor and regulate this new area of medicine.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ever feel like you're losing yourself in midlife?  In this powerful episode, I'm sitting down with expert Ashley Turner to explore the deeper meaning behind midlife hormonal changes in perimenopause and menopause.  Ashley helps you discover how perimenopause can be a profound reckoning, discussing how this stage of life invites us to shift from ego-driven goals toward greater purpose and compassion for others… and more importantly, for yourself.  Ashley beautifully reframes midlife as not an ending, but a spiritual awakening — a chance to realign with who we are and what we value.  We also dive into how embracing this change can spark healing, empowerment, and advocacy for ourselves and others.  Tune in for an inspiring conversation that will leave you ready to step into your next chapter with grace and intention. There's still a huge developmental phase that we're going through as women. People going through menopause, huge transitions in our sense of self, our ambition, our drive, who we are, our identity, of course sexuality, and that's a lot to manage on top of everything else that's happening in life.” “For a lot of women, it's taking 4 to 6 appointments for doctors to connect the dots between what they're going through and it being perimenopause and menopause. And what that does is it delays care, it delays treatment, and it delays a woman's quality of life.”  “I think telling the stories and sharing really authentically and vulnerably and transparently is such an important piece of this because we heal together. We are changing culture. We are weaving a new sisterhood, a new ethos. We also have to educate our partners, our children, our work environments, and really shape shift the culture.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Order my new book The Perimenopause Revolution https://drmariza.com/book Use code ENERGIZED and get 20% off on your Timeline order  http://timeline.com/ENERGIZED Ashley Turner The Haven Community  Metamorphosis: Master Menopause and Midlife  Ashley Turner on Instagram RELATED EPISODES  690: The Perimenopause Revolution: Why midlife isn't the end — it's the beginning of your most energized, powerful, and vibrant self 689: The Hidden Brain Shift: Why Perimenopause Symptoms Start Earlier Than You Think 685: End Emotional Outsourcing: Break Free from Codependency, Perfectionism & People-Pleasing with Beatriz Albina #629: Unlocking Emotional Resilience with Awareness, Lifestyle and Tools to Regulate Your Stress Triggers with Dr. Drew Ramsey

Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg join a16z's Ben Horowitz, Erik Torenberg, and Vineeta Agarwala to share how the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is building the computational tools that will accelerate the cure, prevention, and management of all disease by century's end. They explain why basic science needs $100 million-scale projects that traditional NIH grants can't fund, how their Cell Atlas became biology's missing periodic table with millions of cells catalogued in open-source format, and why their new virtual cell models will let scientists test high-risk hypotheses in silico before investing in expensive wet lab work. Plus: the organizational shift unifying the Biohub under AI leadership, what happens when biologists and engineers sit side-by-side, and why modern biology labs are expanding compute instead of square footage. Timestamps:4:17 - Building tools to accelerate scientific discovery5:47 - The credible path to funding basic science7:21 - Biohub = Frontier Biology + Frontier AI9:05 - Challenges building on a 10-15 year timeline9:43 - How CZI chooses what to work on11:15 - Making sense of science with LLMs11:31 - Measuring success in the therapeutic realm13:32 - “Most diseases should be thought of as rare diseases”15:39 - Inspiration: building a periodic table for biology19:27 - Why virtual cells?21:17 - The Biohub Master Plan21:51 - How virtual cell models allow more risk taking28:15 - Bringing CZI & Biohub together30:32 - Why Biohub matters33:36 - The importance of interface design in democratizing scientific discovery35:34 - How Biohub encourages cross-functional collaboration40:38 - Looking ahead: the broader impact of AI on biotech Stay Updated: If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to like, subscribe, and share with your friends!Find a16z on X: https://x.com/a16zFind a16z on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/a16zListen to the a16z Podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bC65RDvs3oxnLyqqvkUYXListen to the a16z Podcast on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a16z-podcast/id842818711Follow our host: https://x.com/eriktorenbergPlease note that the content here is for informational purposes only; should NOT be taken as legal, business, tax, or investment advice or be used to evaluate any investment or security; and is not directed at any investors or potential investors in any a16z fund. a16z and its affiliates may maintain investments in the companies discussed.
