What if the research indicated there was an inexpensive breathing exercise device that, if utilized about 5 minutes/day, could significantly reduce blood pressure and improve exercise performance? Resisted breathing – or what the science refers to as “inspiratory muscle strength training” – or IMST - isn't new. I remember reading about it, but at the time it appeared to be all fluff as our intercostal breathing muscles were almost never utilized at capacity, so who cares if we strengthen them? Fast forward a decade or so and it turns out we might all care. Whether you or a loved one has high blood pressure and would like to access options beyond just medications, or you're a runner, triathlete, swimmer or cyclist looking to optimize your performance – IMST may be worth a closer look. Today we'll take that closer look with Dr. Daniel Craighead, who's groundbreaking work in this area is both fascinating and eye-opening. Dr. Craighead is a leading exercise physiologist and cardiovascular health researcher at the University of Minnesota, where he focuses on innovative, time-efficient interventions to combat age-related declines in cardiovascular and metabolic health. His research on high-resistance inspiratory muscle strength training has shown that just five minutes a day of targeted breathing exercise can significantly lower blood pressure, enhance vascular function, and improve exercise tolerance — all without traditional aerobic training. Today, he joins The Coaching Lab to unpack how this simple, science-backed technique is reshaping approaches to both peak performance and everyday health. The Powerbreathe unit Dr. Cooper has been using available here. You can stay up to date on Dr. Craighead's latest research via his lab website and if you'd like to tune into another interview he provided for NPR, it is available here.Info re earning your health & wellness coaching certification, annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium & more via https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ Best-in-class coaching for Employers, EAPs & wellness providers https://catalystcoaching360.com/ Tap into the home of the (freely available) Not Done Yet! articles on unlocking life's 2nd half here. If you've ever felt stuck in the cycle of losing weight, regaining it, and then starting over again, you're not alone. Today we're unpacking yo-yo dieting. Why it happens, what it does to your body, and how to finally break free. Yo-yo dieting often starts with extreme calorie restriction, leading to rapid weight loss that looks successful on the surface. But beneath the scale, your body is losing muscle, becoming inflamed, and stressing your hormones. Inevitably, the restrictive approach becomes impossible to maintain, weight creeps back on (often as fat rather than muscle), and the cycle repeats, sometimes with even greater difficulty losing weight each time. We'll dive into the hidden consequences of yo-yo dieting, from slower metabolism and muscle loss to leptin resistance, where your hunger and fullness hormones stop working properly. This not only makes weight loss harder but also increases cravings, fat storage, and frustration while taking a serious toll on mental health. But it's not all bad news. Breaking free from yo-yo dieting is possible by shifting focus from quick fixes to long-term, sustainable habits. We'll talk about the importance of fueling your body, rebuilding metabolic health, and supporting your hormones with balanced nutrition and consistency. You'll also hear about our client Kayla, who went from eating less than 1,300 calories per day without results, to eating hundreds more, feeling better than ever, and finally seeing her body respond. Her story proves that nourishment, not restriction, is the foundation for lasting health. If you're tired of the yo-yo rollercoaster, this episode will give you clarity, encouragement, and practical steps to move toward real, sustainable change. Time Stamps: (1:21) Omar's Favorite Trait about Vanessa(4:20) Yo-Yo Dieting(5:56) Characteristics of Yo-Yo Dieting(11:56) Weight Regain(13:32) Cycle Repetition(15:42) Why Yo-Yo Dieting Doesn't Work(21:44) Leptin Resistance(31:28) Please Share This Episode---------------------Find Out More Information on Vital Spark Coaching---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. ---------------------Download Our FREE Metabolism-Boosting Workout Program---------------------Join the Women's Metabolism Secrets Facebook Community for 25+ videos teaching you how to start losing fat without hating your life!---------------------Click here to send me a message on Facebook and we'll see how I can help or what best free resources I can share!---------------------Interested in 1-on-1 Coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts? Picture this:  you date based on timing, chemistry, or pressure—like friends settling down or feeling like you're running out of time.  While this can all be very real, what if dating wasn't about chasing a spark or checking boxes, and instead was about grounding yourself in your values? What if clarity on your values could not only help you choose a partner—but also prevent dating burnout, heartbreak, and the feeling of losing yourself in the process? To explore this, we're joined today by Kelsea Warren, back on the show! Kelsea helps individuals and businesses elevate wellbeing and prevent burnout by identifying and aligning with their core values and after this episode, I think values based dating just might be your next dating strategy. We'll talk about what dating values actually are, how they're different from surface-level preferences, and why getting clear on them can shift your entire approach to love. We'll explore how to bring values into the dating conversation without scaring someone off, and how to spot green flags that someone shares your values—even if they don't say it directly. So, whether you're new to dating, stuck in patterns that don't feel good anymore, or just craving more intentional connection, this episode will help you build relationships that align with who you are. Alright Flirties, let's do this, and meet Kelsea! As Christian parents, we are called to raise our kids in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. We must be doing what we can to lead them into an adulthood that is spiritually, emotionally, relationally, intellectually, AND physically healthy. Their physical health depends greatly on how we teach them to steward their God-given bodies during their childhood and teenage years. One aspect of this that's related to today's youth culture regards caffeine intake. Are you aware, for example, that your local quickmart drink coolers are filled with aggressively marketed caffeine-infused energy drinks that appeal to teens? And, are you aware that ER visits due to eating or drinking too much caffeine have doubled among middle school kids, and almost doubled for our high schoolers between 2017 and 2023? Parents, we need to educate our kids on God-honoring matters of health and on the dangers of caffeine intake, along with setting borders and boundaries for their consumption.

Colin discusses the importance of tailoring health and safety approaches to the unique needs of each organisation, stressing that while standardised models, such as ISO 9001, can provide value, imposing them without considering the specific context of a business can lead to inefficiencies and frustration KEY TAKEAWAYS Start by asking leaders within the organisation what success looks like to them. Understanding their vision and goals is crucial for providing effective support and guidance. Simply imposing a standardised model, like ISO 9001, can lead to unnecessary bureaucracy and paperwork. Instead, focus on integrating existing processes with the standards to enhance effectiveness. While it's important to aim high, ensure that the goals set are achievable. Collaborate with the organisation to establish sensible targets that can be realistically met over time. BEST MOMENTS "If you just try and impose the structure of 9001 into a business... all you're really gonna do is stuff that organisation up with a load of paperwork." "Ask them, you know, what does success look like for them?" "It's about getting something that's really sensible, get an approach that people can look back in six months... and say, we've made a difference." In a recent episode of the Oncology-on-the-Go podcast in collaboration with the American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS), host Daniel C. McFarland, DO, was joined by Christian J. Nelson, PhD, to discuss the often-overlooked subject of sexual health issues for men after cancer treatment. The discussion emphasized the importance of a nuanced approach to men's health, particularly in the context of genitourinary cancers like prostate and testicular cancer. McFarland is the director of the Psycho-Oncology Program at Wilmot Cancer Center and a medical oncologist who specializes in head, neck, and lung cancer in addition to being the psycho-oncology editorial advisory board member for the journal ONCOLOGY®. He opened the conversation by highlighting that while cancer's physical effects are well-documented, the mental and emotional toll is equally significant and often underappreciated in male patients. He highlighted that the field of psycho-oncology, which began with breast cancer, is now expanding to address men's specific needs. Men, he noted, are less likely to seek mental health support, yet have a higher risk of suicide, particularly at key moments in their cancer journey like diagnosis and recurrence. Nelson, chief of Psychiatry Service, attending psychologist, and codirector of the Psycho-Oncology of Care and Aging Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, underscored that cancer treatments, especially for prostate cancer, often have profound adverse effects (AEs) that impact a man's sense of self and masculinity.  He detailed the effects of radical pelvic treatments and androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), which can lead to urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and changes in sexual function and body image. These AEs can lead to feelings of being "broken," "inadequate," or "deflated." The pair discussed the "double-edged sword" of normalizing cancer, where patients are told their prognosis is good but are left unprepared for the life-altering AEs. This can lead to a sense of cognitive dissonance and isolation. The conversation stressed the need for clinicians to proactively normalize discussions about sexual health, making it clear that these are standard and expected aspects of the cancer experience. Both clinicians suggested that establishing a trusting relationship with patients is paramount and that referrals to psycho-oncology should be framed as an essential, not optional, component of treatment. They also recommend that clinicians consistently check in with their male patients about emotional and sexual well-being, even long after treatment has ended, to ensure they're coping with the lasting impacts of their experience.
