In this episode, Billy sits down with Bob Burg, author of a wealth of successful books on sales, marketing, and influence. Of his books, he calls one the cornerstone of his life's work: Adversaries into Allies: Master the Art of Ultimate Influence. They explore the themes he outlined in this insightful book, in addition to Bob's primary framework: the Five Principles of Influence. If you've ever wanted to have more influence without resorting to manipulation, this conversation will guide you in the right direction. Bob Burg shares how a subtle shift in focus is not only a more uplifting and fulfilling way of conducting business but the most financially profitable way, as well. For 30 years, he's helped companies, sales leaders, and their teams communicate their value more effectively, sell at higher prices with less resistance, and grow their businesses based on Endless Referrals. Bob has regularly addressed audiences ranging in size from 50 to 16,000 — sharing the platform with notables including today's top thought leaders, broadcast personalities, Olympic athletes, and political leaders, including a former United States President. Although he was best known for his book Endless Referrals for years, it's his business parable, The Go-Giver (coauthored with John David Mann), that's captured the imagination of his readers. The Go-Giver, a Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek Bestseller, makes up over a million of Bob's 2 million total book sales. Since its release, it has consistently stayed in the Top 25 on Porchlight's (formerly 800-CEO-READ) Business Book Bestsellers List. The book has been translated into 30 languages. It was rated #10 on Inc. Magazine's list of the Most Motivational Books Ever Written and HubSpot's 20 Most Highly-Rated Sales Books of All Time. Tune in to hear Billy talk with Bob, who's been named one of the 30 Most Influential Leaders by The American Management Association, and named one of the Top 200 Most Influential Authors in the World by Richtopia. What we discussed with Bob: [01:53] – About Bob's dad Mike Burg [02:53] – What ultimate influence means to Bob [04:25] – Who is a genuine influencer [07:16] – The life lesson he learned from his cat, Liberty [10:40] – Basic principle of human nature [13:12] – How he developed his ideas and thoughts [17:43] – The relationship between self-control and character of a person [19:23] – What can we do to control our emotions? [23:30] – Why are clashes of beliefs so critical to an influencer? [26:25] – Setting the proper frame to get desired results Valuable Insights by Bob: Influence is the ability to move a person to the desired action. Great influencers don't try to push their ideas to others. Great influencers attract people. If we want people to take action to go towards the desired outcome, it has to align with what they want. Their values and their goals have to align. Only when you're the boss of yourself, then you're in the position to take a potentially negative situation and turn it into a win. Make sure that you're the master of your emotions as opposed to your emotions being your master. Notable Quotes: [02:14] – “Tact is the language of strength.” [05:15] – “People do things for their reasons, not our reasons.” [15:54] – “By all means take your emotions along for the ride but make sure you're driving the car.” [17:02] – “Self-control is the very essence of the character.” More from Bob: Bob Burg's Books: The Go-Giver Influencer The Go-Giver A Teacher's Guide to The Go-Giver The Go-Giver Leader Adversaries into Allies Go-Givers Sell More Endless Referrals The Success Formula Bob's Website: https://burg.com/ Connect with Bob on Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/burgbob https://twitter.com/bobburg https://www.youtube.com/user/burgcommunications https://www.linkedin.com/in/bobburg/ This is an encore episode and was originally published on August 12, 2021. As human beings, one of the driving forces within us is freedom, making decisions for our lives. Only when you're the boss of yourself, then you're in the position to take a potentially negative situation and turn it into a win. Make sure that you're the master of your emotions as opposed to your emotions being your master. Notable Quotes: [02:14] – “Tact is the language of strength.” [05:15] – “People do things for their reasons, not our reasons.” [15:54] – “By all means take your emotions along for the ride but make sure you're driving the car.” [17:02] – “Self-control is the very essence of the character.” More from Bob: Bob Burg's Books: The Go-Giver Influencer The Go-Giver A Teacher's Guide to The Go-Giver The Go-Giver Leader Adversaries into Allies Go-Givers Sell More Endless Referrals The Success Formula Bob's Website: https://burg.com/ Connect with Bob on Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/burgbob https://twitter.com/bobburg https://www.youtube.com/user/burgcommunications https://www.linkedin.com/in/bobburg/ Learn more about your ad choices. What does it mean to give and be a Go giver? For me personally, giving is a way of life, like a purpose and our actions should reflect that way of life. In this episode, Bob Burg joined us on The xMonks Drive to explain giving. Let's hear from the master about how he came up with this concept of giving and how can this be applied in the business context today. Anonymity in a time where any and every move is monitored, tracked, and logged is certainly something to grab a hold of and hang of for all that it is worth. Now, even more than ever when we are seeing governments overreaching their proverbial hand in more ways than one, any way to “hide” is critical. One such way is the rapidly growing world of crypto currencies. More or less having a genesis in approximately 2009, crypto has become an almost fully normalized method of buying and selling, and the governments are not happy. Crypto is unregulated, hard to trace…and well…can be absolutely confusing. Block chain, mining, digital wallets, and so on. Well, this week on The Malliard Report, Jim welcomes Chris Brady to the show to help clear up some of that confusion. “Chris Brady is a New York Times best-selling author, speaker, humorist, and businessman. His books include Launching a Leadership Revolution (co-authored with Orrin Woodward), PAiLS, Rascal, A Month of Italy, and several other titles on leadership and success. Chris is the CEO and Creative Director of The Life Platform. He is also the executive publisher of Obstacles Press, and one of the Founders of All Grace Outreach, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Chris is also serving on the board of Wisdom International, a radio ministry committed to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ around the world. Chris is listed on the Inc. Chris also serves on the board of Wisdom International, a radio ministry committed to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ around the world. Chris and his wife Terri have four adult children and one grandchild and live in North Carolina.” While we all wish we could have nabbed a Bitcoin or two back in the day, we can only long for “way back when” for so long. Instead, head over to Chris' website where you are able to watch some of his seminars, order his books, or just reach out to him personally. Wanting to jump deeper into the duck pond? Jon talks with Bob Burg, Hall of Fame Keynote Speaker and Bestselling Coauthor of “The Go-Giver” and Go-Giver Book Series and Simon Thomas, CEO at DOBI Real Estate, about the lesson from our favorite book – The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann – and how every business can implement them into their business and mindset. Simon Thomas, CEO of DOBI Real Estate Simon Thomas grew up in the hospitality industry with his family owning banquet halls. He knew that eventually he wanted to get into the real estate industry, but on the commercial side. Simon's cousin was selling homes in Detroit and asked him to try residential for 90 days before he decided to go to the commercial real estate side. On Day 1, Simon sold a house and was hooked! After a year, Simon went off on his own and doubled his business year after year. In 2017, Simon started a team to help agents grow, learn, and leverage each other. After a year, the team decided to start their brokerage company: DOBI. By implementing tools and support that no other brokerage offers, their agents' businesses are growing! How can more of us find these quickest ways to develop, nurture and grow courage within us and our teams or peers? Does it take having a hard or bad experience to make us be more kind as well as courageous – why or why not? When was a time that you saw a leader change from an old pattern of behavior to real courage and that inspired you? Power seems to be left to those who have earned it already. Bob Burg shares how a subtle shift in focus is not only a more uplifting and fulfilling way of conducting business but the most financially profitable way, as well. For 30 years he's helped companies, sales leaders, and their teams to more effectively communicate their value, sell at higher prices with less resistance, and grow their businesses based on Endless Referrals. Bob regularly addresses audiences ranging in size from 50 to 16,000 — sharing the platform with notables including today's top thought leaders, broadcast personalities, Olympic athletes and political leaders including a former United States President. Although for years he was best known for his book http://www.amazon.com/dp/0071462074/?tag=burgcomm-20 (Endless Referrals), over the past few years it's his business parable, https://www.amazon.com/Go-Giver-Expanded-Little-Powerful-Business/dp/1591848288/?tag=burgcomm-20 (The Go-Giver) (coauthored with John David Mann) that has captured the imagination of his readers. The Go-Giver, a Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek Bestseller, has sold over 975,000 copies. Since its release it has consistently stayed in the Top 25 on Porchlight's (formerly 800-CEO-READ) Business Book Bestsellers List. The book has been translated into 29 languages. It was rated #10 on Inc. Magazine's list of the Most Motivational Books Ever Written, and was on HubSpot's 20 Most Highly Rated Sales Books of All Time. In this episode we discuss: The Go-Giver Way 5 Laws of Stratospheric Success The Law of Value - Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment. The Law of Compensation - Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them. The Law of Influence - Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people's interests first. The Law of Authenticity - The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself. The Law of Receptivity - The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving. What is Success? On today’s show we’re talking about a book that has changed numerous lives of friends of mine, and quite frankly I’m embarrassed to say that I waited a long time to read it. I waited even longer to recommend it. But we’re here to correct that this month. This weekend I had the privilege to spend an hour with the author of this month’s book on a zoom call. The author’s name is Bob Burg and he was coming to us from his home in Jupiter Floria. Bob is the author of 8 books and has sold over 2M copies. Some of his books have been translated into 29 languages. Bob has been named one of the 200 most influential authors in the World by Richtopia. The book is “The Go Giver; A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea” I’ve long been a believer in abundance mentality. If you’re a listener to this show, chances are good that you’ve been certainly exposed to it, if you’re not a full convert to the mindset of abundance. The opposite of abundance mentality is scarcity mentality. That’s the mindset that says “The pie is only so big. If I’m going to get my fair share, I have to take it from someone else.” The abundance mindset says that, rather than taking from someone else, focus instead on making the pie bigger. But the book the Go Giver is much deeper. You are probably thinking that you understand the abundance mindset. But there are many other factors that go into the true giver mentality, rather than focusing on abundance. Bob Burg breaks it down into 5 principles, as if they’re almost laws of nature. The book is written as a narrative, as a fable with Joe, the super aggressive salesman trying to meet his sales quota for the quarter. He keeps losing deal after deal. He’s focused on the prize. He’s focused on meeting his sales quota. There’s a week remaining in the quarter and he’s getting desperate. In the course of the week, our salesman Joe meets a mentor who takes him through a series of five lessons, each with daily homework. The power of this book is in its simplicity. Bob Burg doesn’t just give you the information. He wraps it in a story. We learn through stories. We are taken through a narrative that transforms the main character in the story, bit by bit. Each lesson results in a shift. But still pieces of the puzzle are missing and the picture isn’t clear. You see some businesses are focused on just giving enough value to make the trade a fair trade. If you get a decent cup of coffee for $2, that’s a fair trade. But you’re not going to become a global leader with that. You have to deliver a coffee experience so great, that the customer feels like they’re getting a massive bargain at $2. But even if you deliver incredible value, it will still be a small business unless you truly aim to serve a lot of people, and serve them really well. That’s why a rock star gets paid so much more than a great musician who plays on Friday night’s in a bar band. The rock star has focused on impacting many more people. I’m not going to give the entire book away. What I discovered is that those people who are takers show up as plain as can be. Spending time with the author Bob Burg was very special. It was clear that even though the book has a few simple ideas, it doesn’t mean they’re all easy to implement. Social conditioning can run deep for many. The ideas in this book can challenge core beliefs for some. The discussion took us much deeper than the book itself. Bob started quoting Benjamin Franklin and other great thinkers that came before. The ideas in the book are really designed to be timeless. Even though this book was first published in 2007, and then later updated in 2015, this book is destined to become a timeless classic.

The second biggest problem is that they get started, but they never finish. The third biggest problem is that they start, they finished, maybe they even market the book and sell a few copies but they wrote the wrong book. And that's one of the problems who help them solve is that we help them write the right book for building their business. 5:30Josh's Valuable Free Action (VFA): One of the things that causes writers block and gets people hang up on the book is, they don't take the idea further than just 'hey I want to write a book'. And the biggest question to ask at the beginning is why are you writing this book? is this for lead generation, is this to build a legacy, is it because there's a certain message that you want to get out...

Last year, I read a lot of books, but one book that made a particularly lasting impact was The Go-Giver. A special thank you to Graham Cochrane and his podcast for introducing me to this book. The Go-Giver tells the story of an ambitious young man named Joe who yearns for success. Joe is a true go-getter, though sometimes he feels as if the harder and faster he works, the further away his goals seem to be. And so one day, desperate to land a key sale at the end of a bad quarter, he seeks advice from the enigmatic Pindar, a legendary consultant referred to by his many devotees simply as the Chairman. Pindar takes Joe (and us as the reader) on a journey, where Joe meets 5 “go-givers” and learns the 5 counter-intuitive laws of stratospheric success. I’m honored and excited to bring you an interview with Bob Burg, co-author of The Go-Giver. Bob is a sought-after speaker at company leadership and sales conferences sharing the platform with today’s business leaders, Olympic athletes, broadcast personalities, and even a former U.S. President. But gives all the credit to the readers to make the book work. Tells us that the essence of influence is pull as opposed to push. After all, how far can you push a rope? Josh lives on a farm near Boston with his wife, two children, and 27 horses, and is an avid reader, trail runner, triathlete, and skateboarder. Most passionate about What I’m most passionate about today is personal influence. I believe most people are good people, and if I can help people to increase their influence, to be more influential, then they will use that influence to do good things and make the world a better place. So, that’s my mission. I’m on a mission to help people become more influential so they can change the world. I have courses, and a book that I’m writing called, The 7 Systems of Influence, I have my blog, email newsletter, and I’m active on social media, but the way this all came about is because I have a business, a digital marketing agency. We don’t focus on personal branding or influence, we focus on helping businesses to sell more, so we do SEO and things like that. A few years ago I started working on my personal brand as a way to market that agency and it really worked in a huge way. It was that experience of working on my personal brand and seeing it build my business that made me think, this is fun and this is something that I would love to help other people do. I’d love to help other people work on their personal brands so they can build their business or get their message out and that’s how this all started. Then, I went from coaching to these courses, to working on this book and I’m trying to get the word out any way I can to help people understand how personal branding works, how influence works, so they can apply it in their businesses and lives. Joshua’s best advice about approaching customers Even more foundational than market fit is something that I learned when I was writing this book. The way I wrote this book was I went out and interviewed 30 CMOs from large companies; from Target, PayPal, Spotify, GEE, as well from as a bunch of startups. As I interviewed these brilliant marketers who had successful track records in these companies, one thing stood out across the board: empathy. These marketers really understood their customers, they could get inside the minds of their customers, they might do focus groups, they would do testing and such, but they really understood, fundamentally, what their customers wanted. Biggest failure with a customer I’ve had so many failures. If I’ve had any success, I’ve had 10 times as many failures. Life’s interesting, especially as an entrepreneur and as somebody involved in marketing, you always show off the successful side of what you’ve done. You trumpet your successes; you hide your failures. Most of my biggest failures have to do with people; where I made a bad decision either in hiring the wrong person or in hiring the right person but putting them in the wrong role, or I hired the right person, maybe I put them in the right role, but the way I managed them or the way I set up their relationship was the wrong way. For example, in 1999 I started my first real business, MWI, which is the marketing agency that I still run today, and I brought on a partner, after I’d known this guy for literally 10 minutes. There is a major problem in the world today: It’s not people disagreeing with one another. It is that they cannot disagree agreeably, civilly, and most importantly, persuasively! And according to Bob Burg, that simply need not be the case. Bob says, “You can get the results you want while making the other person feel genuinely good: about themselves, about the situation, and about you!” In this podcast, Paul and Bob discuss how to fix these issues! Tune into his show to hear how you can become a go-giver, and make sure to go back and listen to his previous episode #73 with us! 5 Golden Nuggets Shared: 1. A go-giver is someone who understands that shifting their focus from getting to giving (giving, in this context, meaning constantly and consistently providing value to others) is not only a pleasant way of doing business; it's the most financially profitable way, as well. 2. Begin by moving from an “I-focus” or “me-focus” to an “other-focus” looking for ways to bring immense value to that other person. 3. No one is forced to do business with anyone else. In this environment, the customer always has the last word because they are the ones to decide if you are doing business or not. 4. People skills can be taught and learned, but the single greatest people skill is a highly developed and authentic interest in the other person. 5. Take the principles you learn and apply them. The key there, you have to start and apply them. 3 Bold and Kick-Ass Quotes: 1. “It’s not about you, it’s about them.“ - Bob Burg 2. “If you want to serve the marketplace, you have to put the customer’s interests first.” - Bob Burg 3. “Always make it in the other person’s best interest.” - Bob Burg Click the hyperlink below to connect directly with Bob! What is the Go-Giver philosophy and how can you use it to achieve greater business success? In this week's episode, Bob Burg addresses these questions and so much more. He is the co-author of The Go-Giver, a Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek Bestseller that has sold over 650,000 copies. Since its release it has consistently stayed in the top 25 on 800ceoread's Business Book Bestsellers List. It has been translated into 21 languages, was rated #10 on Inc. Magazine's list of the Most Motivational Books Ever Written, and was on HubSpot's 20 Most Highly Rated Sales Books of All Time. In our enriching conversation with Bob Burg, he defines his Go-Giver philosophy, which has captured the business world's attention. We explore the difference between creating value and giving stuff away for less – or for free – and how giving is not only a nice way to do business, it is also the most financially profitable. Bob Burg goes on to define the 5 elements of value that anyone can apply and how to create sales transactions that leave both parties far better off than they were before. We also explore the Law of Receptivity, which states that giving and receiving are not opposite concepts, rather, they are two sides of the same coin. We wind up our conversation with Bob revealing a few specific techniques that he uses to make a lasting impression on decision makers and gain more business. Packed full of valuable insights from a master salesman, author, speaker, and business leader, this episode is a must-hear for every person seeking to bring greater value to the world. Key Takeaways 1) Constantly and consistently providing value to others is not only a nice way to do business it is also the most financially profitable. 2) Money is simply an echo of value. 3) Unless you're Wal-Mart, trying to make low prices your unique selling proposition is not unique, it's not selling, and it's not a great proposition. If they buy from you on low price, they'll leave you for the next person who lowers theirs. You're also probably not going to leave yourself enough margin to conduct your business profitably, productively, and you're not going to have as much fun. You'll also have to have twice as many customers. 4) Giving away stuff for free is not being a Go-Giver, and it's not not being a Go-Giver. It's simply a strategy. 5) When you sell on price, you're a commodity. When you sell on value, you're a resource. 6) There are 5 elements of value – as you do these 5 things, you take price out of the conversation. 7) The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving. Giving and receiving are not opposite concepts rather, they are two sides of the same coin. FOCUS on the giving, and ALLOW yourself to receive. His Dad advised him to “never go down the pit”, fortunately enough for Steve, when he was leaving school he did not have much choice because most of the mining pits in the nearby community had closed. Steve’s Mother was a Teacher and she had different ideas for him, encouraging him that he could go anywhere and be anything he wanted. Steve stayed on a school at did A Levels, he explains, “I did exceptionally badly, passing only one of them”. He points out that this was in the early 1980’s where within the mining communities, there was not a lot for anyone to do with regards to jobs/employment. Therefore as an 18 year old, he applied for a variety of jobs. He explained “I applied for around 150 jobs without getting even one interview”. So Steve did a part-time course in Mechanical Engineering, which took him to Cumbria, working at Sellafield. This was to be the beginning of Steve’s fantastic education, employment and entrepreneur journey. He was always looking “to upgrade his skills and upgrade himself”. This drive would take Steve all around the world as a global Insurance/Insurtech thought leader and ambassador. Steve now has over thirty years of experience in owning, running and future proofing companies. He has been CEO, Managing Director or equivalent in seven companies in four countries managing teams of up to 500 employees and based in Asia for over 20 years. Steve has been recognised as the No.1 worldwide influencer in Insurtech, according to the Global Instech 100. He features in the Top 20 Global Influencer lists of Rise, Richtopia and Onalytica in the areas of Insurtech, Fintech and Blockchain and has a significant presence on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Tumblr. He is always looking to grow, learn more, share his knowledge, nurture others, whilst always remaining humble, this is his style of leadership and entrepreneurship. Steve had always been interested in investing and saving for his future, however he explains that when starting out, he was not a consistent investor and a bit too flighty. He admits that he would have been well served by Warren Buffet’s advice to buy, hold and don’t lose money. He explains that whilst still in the UK in the 1990’s he did a little bit of trading in stocks. He says that he was “ill-formed and swayed by the influence of lots of people, which probably he should not have listened to”. Many of his early investments “were less than stellar”. Nowadays, Steve has a significant proportion of his investments in Tech stocks such as Facebook, ETFs and cryptocurriencies. With his current business Inzsure.com http://www.inzsure.com/ leveraging cryptocurrency even further. Inzsure is an aggregation solution transforming commercial insurance built on Ethereum – a derivative of Blockchain. The platform leverages chatbot interfaces on a mobile first platform powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and informed through intensive data analysis.
