In today's episode, Patrick shares how Luke 12:22–34 reveals that freedom from anxiety comes not from having more, but from trusting God, loosening our grip on possessions, and seeking his kingdom first. If you recognize the sound of a Velcro rip and your heart starts to pound the minute you hear that familiar hum, we need to talk. You likely bought a home blood pressure monitor to feel safer and healthier, but now you might feel like a slave to a rubber tube and a plastic screen. In this episode, we are looking at how a responsible health habit turns into a psychological nightmare in the form of fixation and obsessive fear. We discuss why blood pressure anxiety happens, often in the complete absence of an actual medical issue. Let's talk about how you can start living your life again without being tethered to a machine.---Want to talk about this episode?I'm hanging out in the Disordered Community space:https://disordered.fm/community------What we covered in this episode:The Paradox of Stress and Vitals: How the act of worrying about your blood pressure is exactly what drives the numbers up.The Certainty Trap: Why checking for reassurance only leads to more uncertainty and more frequent checking loops. The ACT Lens: Learning to accept the reality of health uncertainty rather than trying to perform behaviors to make the fear go away.Metacognitive Beliefs: Examining why you think worrying about your vitals is protective and learning to treat these thoughts as mental events.Detached Mindfulness: Using tools like the Blue Tiger exercise to recognize when you are being hooked by a scary thought.Rebound Anxiety: Why it feels reckless and scary to stop checking, and why that feeling is a normal part of the recovery process.Recovery from blood pressure anxiety is not about reaching a perfect, guaranteed number. It is about changing your relationship with your physiology so you can move your energy back toward the things that actually matter in your life. For full show notes on this episode:https://theanxioustruth.com/342Send in a question or comment via text.Support The Anxious Truth: If you find the podcast helpful and want to support my work, you can buy me a coffee.   Other ways to support my work like buying a book or signing up for a low cost workshop can be found on my website.  None of this is never required, but always appreciated! His book, "Indoor Epidemic," argues that spending about 93% of life indoors undermines health through poor light timing, air quality, limited movement, and reduced nature exposure. La Puma cites data that outdoor morning light helps set circadian rhythms, while nighttime blue light can impair sleep quality and raise cardiovascular risks, referencing a large UK Biobank study. He discusses indoor pollutants and CO2 buildup affecting inflammation and cognition, recommends strategies like getting daylight early (even just a sky view), using circadian lighting, and taking brief outdoor breaks to reduce myopia risk. He describes measurable benefits of forest bathing and gardening (including immune and mood effects), notes hospital studies linking window views to shorter stays and less pain medication, and reviews his pioneering work in culinary medicine now taught widely in medical schools, emphasizing cooking and growing food as preventive and therapeutic tools.

Hey, Heal Squad! If you've ever wondered whether you might have ADHD this episode is going to hit. We sat down with Dr. Steven Storage, a board-certified adult and child psychiatrist at Amen Clinics, and he completely reframed what ADHD actually is  and what it isn't. Because here's the thing: ADHD isn't just about focus. It's about how your brain regulates attention, energy, and emotion  and for so many people, it's been misunderstood or missed entirely. Dr. Storage breaks down why ADHD is often misdiagnosed as anxiety or depression, especially in people who are high-functioning and “getting by” on the outside, but internally feel overwhelmed, disorganized, or exhausted from working twice as hard. Instead of giving a simple checklist, he explains why there's no one-size-fits-all test for ADHD and why it's more about recognizing patterns over time. In fact, he walks us through seven key patterns that might signal ADHD, including things like struggling to start tasks unless you're excited about them and dealing with chronic disorganization! We also get into why ADHD can actually come with some powerful strengths like creativity, intuition, and big-picture thinking! Maria had so many “wait…that's me” moments in this conversation,  and honestly, you probably will too! HEALERS & HEAL LINERS ADHD Isn't About Focus, It's About Regulation: Your brain struggles to regulate attention, energy, and emotion. That's why you can hyper-focus on what you love, but feel stuck or overwhelmed with everything else. ADHD Misdiagnosed: So many people are treated for anxiety or depression first, when ADHD is actually the root cause. If you've been “getting by” but working twice as hard, it's worth looking deeper. Your Brain Isn't Broken, It's Different: ADHD brains can be incredibly powerful: creative, intuitive, big-picture thinkers. The goal isn't to “fix” yourself. it's to understand how your brain works and learn how to work with it. This is genuinely a hard call, and you deserve expert guidance on how to start this conversation with your kid.  In this episode, clinical psychologist Dr. Lisa Damour and journalist Reena Ninan dig into one of the fastest-growing pressure points for teen athletes: supplements. From creatine to protein powder to "pre-workout," teens (especially boys) are being flooded with messages about muscle, performance, and products — all through social media, influencers, and even their own teammates. And most of them aren't asking their parents before they start taking them. Dr. Lisa walks you through exactly how to think about this, how to talk about it with your teen, and where to draw the line.

Kalm with Kava | Exploring Natural Ways to Calm Anxiety & Manage Stresswith Morgan SmithIn today's fast-paced world, many people are searching for natural, plant-based ways to calm anxiety and manage daily stress. In this episode of Linda's Corner: Inspiration for a Better Life, I sit down with Morgan Smith, a kava enthusiast, wellness entrepreneur, and CEO of Monsoon Beverages, as well as the operator of Pu‘īwa Hawaiian Farms.Morgan introduces us to kava, a traditional Pacific Island beverage with a long and respected history. For centuries, kava has been grown and consumed throughout islands such as Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa. Across these cultures, kava has symbolized respect and connection and has been used in social gatherings, spiritual ceremonies, and traditional healing practices. We explore how kava is now gaining attention in Western wellness circles for its calming and anxiolytic properties. Morgan explains that kava's effects come from its active compounds, kavalactones, which are concentrated in the root of the plant. These compounds interact with the brain's limbic system—particularly the amygdala, which plays a key role in emotional regulation. For many people, this interaction creates a sense of both mental and physical relaxation.Morgan describes kava as the opposite of coffee—an “anti-coffee,” if you will. While coffee is often used to energize and stimulate, kava is typically enjoyed in the evening to help the body unwind and the mind slow down. It doesn't produce intoxication like alcohol; instead, Morgan compares it to a strong chamomile tea with noticeable calming effects.Since I haven't personally tried kava, Morgan also walks us through what someone can expect when trying it for the first time. He shares that kava has a naturally bitter taste (definitely not sweet!) and may cause a mild tingling or numbing sensation in the mouth. Traditionally, kava is served in several small portions—often called “shells,” named after the coconut shells originally used to drink it.While kava may not be for everyone, this conversation opens the door to understanding natural herbal options that support relaxation, stress relief, and emotional well-being. It's a thoughtful exploration of ancient wisdom meeting modern wellness. To learn more about kava and Morgan's work, visit Kalm with Kava at https://kalmwithkava.com/✨ If you're curious about natural ways to calm anxiety, reduce stress, and support your nervous system, this episode is a must-listen.Listen, Share, and SupportIf this episode resonated with you, please share it with someone who may need hope today.Be sure to subscribe, leave a rating and review, and help us spread more healing and inspiration to the world.Free Resource for HealingIf you're ready to release stress, calm your mind, and begin healing from within, visit:

New Study Links Aged Garlic Extract to Better Cognition: Holistic practitioner Jane Jansen from the Tree of Life Wellness Center in Massachusetts reveals a newly published double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA involving 72 participants with pre-hypertension or hypertension. Over 12 weeks, one group took 2,400 mg/day of Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract (Reserve formula), and cognitive function was tracked using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Jansen reports that 92% of the aged garlic extract group had no cognitive impairment after the trial, while the placebo group showed more cognitive decline, with benefits attributed to increased nitric oxide bioavailability, improved endothelial function, better cerebral blood flow, nerve protection/repair, and enhanced brain waste removal. She contrasts this approach with costly Alzheimer's plaque-busting drugs and discusses prevention strategies, including diet, sleep (glymphatic system), exercise, inflammation control, and circulation-supporting nutrients such as nattokinase.

Take the guesswork out of your anxiety recovery today at anxietyguyprograms.com. In this Anxiety Guy Podcast episode, Dennis Simsek explores a key factor most people overlook in anxiety recovery: capacity. Mental, emotional, and physical capacity and how much your nervous system is actually able to hold. If you've been doing the "right" things but still feel stuck in anxiety, overwhelm, fatigue, panic, or constant tension, this episode helps you see what's happening underneath the surface. Because when you consistently live above your capacity, your nervous system doesn't read life as stress, it reads it as survival. And anxiety becomes a baseline state rather than a temporary response. Many people with health anxiety, panic symptoms, burnout, dizziness, chest sensations, adrenaline surges, derealization, and symptom fear try to fix things through more thinking, control, or techniques. But when the system is overloaded, even good tools can feel ineffective. In this episode, you'll learn: why anxiety persists even with understanding how mental overload creates constant urgency why emotional buildup becomes your baseline how physical overextension signals danger to the body why your nervous system responds to total load, not isolated moments how living below your capacity supports regulation why healing is about reducing pressure, not adding effort If you're working with anxiety recovery, nervous system regulation, burnout, or symptom fear, this episode gives you a clearer way to understand what's actually driving it. Inside the Therapy Room: A Live TEAM CBT Session with Hiral Part 1 of 2 Overview What an incredible day. David and I had the privilege of working with Hiral, a young mother from India who was drowning in perfectionism, self-criticism, and the crushing weight of trying to be everything to everyone. Over the course of about two hours, we watched her transform from someone scoring 100% on depression, anxiety, guilt, shame, and hopelessness to feeling peaceful, relaxed, and genuinely joyful—with most scores dropping to zero. This wasn't magic. It was TEAM-CBT done systematically, with measurement, genuine empathy, paradoxical agenda setting, and powerful cognitive techniques. And yes, Hiral did most of the heavy lifting herself once we got out of her way. For those of you who attended or are reading this summary, I want to walk you through what happened—not just what we did, but why it worked. Because here's the thing: this will look deceptively simple. That's the trap. TEAM-CBT is among the hardest therapeutic approaches to master, precisely because each step exists on multiple levels and requires you to change before your patients can change. Let's dig in. The Setup: Who Was Hiral? Hiral is a mother of an almost-four-year-old son, living in a joint family in Gujarat, India, with her husband and in-laws. She's also studying to become a TEAM-CBT therapist herself, preparing for her Level 3 certification exam. But beneath these roles, Hiral was suffering: Feeling like a failure as a mother Constant self-criticism and perfectionism Trapped in a rigid family environment with little emotional support Isolated from friends, her own parents, and the vibrant life she once had Plagued by guilt, shame, anxiety, and hopelessness—all at 100% Sound familiar? I'll bet many of you have worked with someone like Hiral. Or maybe you've been Hiral at some point in your life. I know I have. T = Testing: The Emotional X-Ray Before we even said hello to Hiral, she completed the Brief Mood Survey—David's ultra-reliable, ultra-short measures of depression, anxiety, anger, happiness, and relationship satisfaction right now, in this moment. Her scores were staggering: Depression: 11/20 (moderate, with "sad," "down," and "hopeless" all elevated) Anxiety: 14/20 (moderate to severe) Anger: 14/20 (same intensity as anxiety) Happiness: 8/20 (very low) Relationship Satisfaction: 10/30 (significant dissatisfaction with her husband) Why this matters: Most therapists never measure how their patients feel. They think they know, but research shows therapist accuracy is around 3-10% on depression, suicidality, anxiety, and anger. Zero percent on suicidal urges. Think about that. Without measurement, you're flying blind. With it, you have an emotional X-ray that shows you exactly where the patient is hurting—and later, exactly how much you've helped (or haven't). TEAM-CBT Pearl: Testing isn't optional. It's the foundation. Measure at the start of every session, and measure again at the end. If you're scared to see the results, that's your ego talking. E = Empathy: The Zero Technique For the first 30-40 minutes, David and I did... nothing. Well, not nothing—we listened. We used the Five Secrets of Effective Communication: Disarming Technique: Finding truth in what Hiral said Thought Empathy: Paraphrasing her thoughts Feeling Empathy: Acknowledging her emotions Inquiry: Asking gentle questions to help her open up Stroking: Conveying warmth and respect But here's the key: we gave her nothing. No advice. No cheerleading. No problem-solving. We call this the Zero Technique—giving the patient nothing is actually giving them everything, because what they want most is to feel understood. The Empathy Pitfall: DO NOT PREACH Early in empathy, it's tempting to: Problem-solve Rescue Educate Advise Cheerlead Help Resist. Your job is to go with your patient to the gates of hell and just be with them there. Checking Our Empathy After about 30 minutes, we asked Hiral to grade us on three dimensions (A, B, C, D, or F): Thought Empathy: How well did we understand her negative thoughts? Feeling Empathy: How well did we acknowledge her emotions? Warmth & Acceptance: Did she feel cared about and accepted? She gave us two A's and hesitated on the third. Why? She didn't feel we could truly understand her cultural context—the joint family system, the rigid in-laws, the isolation from her friends and parents. She felt alone even with us. This was gold. Instead of getting defensive, we leaned in. David shared his own experience living near in-laws with vastly different values. I shared my own struggles with perfectionism and parenting anxiety. Hiral started to cry—not from sadness, but from finally feeling seen. TEAM-CBT Pearl: When you get a failing grade on empathy, celebrate. It's your chance to deepen the connection. Process the failure with your patient, and watch the breakthrough happen. Next week, Part 2, the exciting conclusion of the live session with Hiral!

In 2023, we released an episode about eco-anxiety that quickly became one of the most listened-to conversations on this show, and landed us our first award. But honestly, that didn't surprise me. More and more people are feeling overwhelmed by the state of the world—whether it's the climate crisis, the 24-hour news cycle, political instability, or just the constant sense that everything is happening all at once.So in episode 220 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, I wanted to revisit that topic, but from a slightly broader perspective with the help of my guest, Laura Hartley.Laura is a leadership coach & climate activist helping changemakers deepen their impact while living their most thriving life. Fascinated by the relationship between inner and outer change, Laura bridges systems thinking with self-work to empower changemakers with the skills of dismantling capitalism and patriarchy from the inside out.  Together, we explore how eco-anxiety fits into the wider landscape of burnout, information overload, and the pressure many people feel to personally “fix” the world's problems. We talk about how our economic and cultural systems—things like individualism, capitalism, and the myth of the lone hero—shape the way we experience stress and responsibility in the climate movement. But we also explore the other side of that conversation: community, hope, and how reconnecting with each other—and the natural world—can change the way we navigate these feelings. An important note before we hear the interview: This episode discusses topics like anxiety, burnout, and emotional responses to climate change. However, neither my guest nor I are trained therapist or mental health professional. This conversation is meant to explore ideas and share perspectives, not provide medical advice. If you're experiencing severe anxiety, distress, or other mental health symptoms, please consider seeking support from a qualified mental health professional.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/outdoor.minimalist.book/Website: https://www.theoutdoorminimalist.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@theoutdoorminimalistBuy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/outdoorminimalistListener Survey: https://forms.gle/jd8UCN2LL3AQst976------------------Laura HartleyWebsite: https://laurahartley.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/laurahartleypubliclove/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/laura.h.hartleyLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-hartley-/

Struggling with anxiety as a Christian can feel confusing—especially when verses like John 14:1 tell us not to let our hearts be troubled. But Jesus’ response to anxiety isn’t harsh correction—it’s compassionate invitation. In moments of fear and overwhelm, He offers peace, not pressure. His words weren’t spoken to shame anxious hearts but to comfort them, reminding us that trust in Him is the pathway to lasting peace. True peace isn’t something we manufacture through perfect prayers or flawless faith—it’s something we receive from Jesus. Biblical peace goes deeper than calm emotions; it’s a sense of wholeness and security rooted in His presence. As we consistently turn to Him—through prayer, Scripture, and honest surrender—He begins to reshape our thoughts and quiet our fears. It may not happen instantly, but over time, His peace grows stronger than our anxiety. Highlights Jesus responds to anxiety with compassion, not condemnation “Do not be troubled” is an invitation to trust, not a harsh command Peace comes from Christ—not from striving or self-effort Anxiety often persists when we expect instant healing Spiritual practices help us receive the peace we already have in Christ Honest prayer invites God to reveal what may be hindering our peace Trusting Jesus more deeply leads to greater, lasting peace Do you want to listen ad-free? You believe in God; believe also in me.” - John 14:1 NIV As someone with a long history of anxiety, I used to feel guilt and condemnation when I read today’s verse and others like it. I knew Scripture told me, in numerous places, not to fear. I understood the importance of “taking my thoughts captive. I also recognized that I’d remain stuck in my overwhelm and whatever habitual battle I faced unless I allowed the Lord to transform me as I intentionally renewed my mind with God’s unchanging truth. Yet, I consistently found myself enslaved to my spinning anxious thoughts that felt far too strong to counter or correct. My problem was two-fold. First, I expected instant healing and freedom. I thought if I said the right prayers, memorized enough Scripture, and chose to yield my circumstances to Christ, bam! He’d instantly erase all the lies and doubts fueling my fears and flood my brain and soul with His promises—which, of course, would stick, indefinitely. Second, I misread Jesus’ invitation to trust as a harsh command that brought Him frustration when not lived out. But our Savior is gentle and humble in heart and longs to provide rest, not guilt and shame, to our souls (Matthew 11:28). When I read John 14 through that lens, I see Christ’s words as tender reassurance spoken from a place of compassionate awareness that fearful times lie ahead. The context of today’s verse supports this. If you’re familiar with the events surrounding Christ’s crucifixion, you might recognize the circumstances surrounding His words. On the night before His death, He gathered His disciples in an upper room to celebrate the Passover. During this sacred meal, He predicted several unsettling things: He’d soon leave, and they couldn’t come. One of them would betray Him, they’d all abandon Him in His most painful moment, and Peter would deny three times that he even knew Him. But notice how Jesus bookended this difficult information. He began the chapter with today’s verse, telling them not to let their hearts be troubled but instead to trust in Him. Then, in verse 27, He repeated this with additional details when He said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Intersecting Life & Faith: Peace. Biblically speaking, this word, eiréné in the original Greek, goes deeper than emotional tranquility. It signifies wholeness, well-being, and things as they should be. And notice, this soul-state comes from Him, not our frantic efforts to change or heal ourselves. Yes, we must do our part by consistently turning to Him through prayer, Bible reading, silent meditation, and practicing other spiritual disciplines. Scripture also encourages us to learn how to rely on and yield to the Holy Spirit more consistently and to do our best to obey, however He leads. Sometimes, this requires prayerfully considering ways we might be actively blocking or hindering our ability to receive Christ’s peace. Notice the phrasing in Colossians 3:15: Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful (NIV, emphasis mine). This seems to indicate that we already possess His peace but haven’t given it full reign for some reason. Perhaps we’re held captive to an addiction that leads to regretful behavior and damaged relationships, and the inner angst both scenarios create. Or, maybe we’re spending far more time reading fear-mongering clickbait articles than we are truth. Or we might feel reluctant to take medication that our brain needs to function optimally. Most, if not all, of us also tend to experience some degree of self-deception. Because of this, I’ve found it helpful to pray Psalm 139:23-24, which reads: Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting (NIV). The New American Standard Bible phrases the last line in this passage this way: … see if there is any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way. Understand, I don’t pray this from a place of guilt or shame. Rather, I’m asking the One who knows me better than I know myself and sees the most hidden places in my soul to reveal those things within me that hinder my freedom. This is a request He loves to answer because it positions me for the deep transformation I need to experience the “beyond-expectations” thriving life He promised in John 10:10. Because only the Prince of Peace holds the power to calm and strengthen my wounded and fearful soul. He longs to do the same for you. The more you connect with, listen to, learn from, and follow Him, the easier it becomes to “believe in Him,” as today’s verse invites you to do. And the more we believe in Him—trusting His power, promises, and heart—the greater our peace. What does it take to finally walk away from drinking when you love the party, love your people, and have never once thought of yourself as someone with a problem? Brooke was a high-functioning extrovert running a business and raising a family when a quiet voice in her head kept telling her something was off. Once she found The Path and started doing the real work, she discovered how alcohol-free living improved her anxiety in ways she never anticipated, and two and a half years later she has not looked back once. Brooke discusses: The brain scan that first linked her alcohol use to her health and sparked a decade-long journey toward change Taking 10 months alcohol-free, returning to drinking after a family trip, and why she never judged herself for it How COVID neighborhood happy hours quietly accelerated her relationship with alcohol Joining The Path in August 2023 and the hungover weekend trip that became her last Discovering she was an extrovert living with social anxiety and how that reframed everything she thought she knew about her drinking How alcohol-free living improved her anxiety by removing the daily double whammy of hangxiety and giving her space to actually feel and respond The shift from "I can't have it" to "I don't want it" and what real alcohol freedom looks and feels like Morning Pages, journaling, therapy, books, and other low-barrier tools that helped her most in the early days Why self-awareness and willingness are the two things that make every other tool actually work And more on identity, belonging, and building a life that feels the same on the inside as it looks on the outside... In this conversation, I sat down with Dr. Stephen Porges, and I'm telling you right now, this one stretched me. Not just intellectually, but personally. Because what Dr. Porges reveals is something most of us have never been taught. Your life is not just driven by mindset or motivation. It is driven by your physiological state. And if you don't understand that, you could spend your entire life trying to “think” your way out of something your body is actually controlling. We get into his groundbreaking work on the nervous system, the vagus nerve, and what he calls neuroception. That is your body's ability to detect safety or danger without you even being aware of it. And here is the truth that hit me hard. If your body does not feel safe, it will not give you permission to feel joy, connection, or even perform at your best. That explains why so many high achievers still feel anxious, disconnected, or stuck even when everything on the outside looks successful. Dr. Porges breaks down trauma in a way I have never heard before. It is not just something that happened to you. It is something your nervous system holds onto because it is trying to protect you.
