Distinguishing between ADHD and anxiety can feel a bit like trying to figure out if you're sneezing because of a cold or because your neighbor just started mowing their lawn - or maybe it's a bit of both, the symptoms look the same, but the solution is very different. This week, I'm talking with Dr. Mona Potter, a Harvard-trained, board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist and the Chief Medical Officer and Co-founder of InStride Health. Dr. Potter spent years at McLean Hospital pioneering treatments for anxiety and OCD, and has a unique perspective on how we can manage the specific brand of exhaustion that comes with being neurodivergent in a world that never stops moving. Today, we're exploring the bio psycho social model—which is just a fancy way of saying we're looking at your sleep, your stress, and your chemistry all at once. We discuss the "optimal zone" of anxiety and how it can actually mask ADHD symptoms until you find a treatment that works, the difference between a "crutch" and a tool, and why parents (and adults) should stop trying to be the "external executive function" for everyone around them. ADHD distractions are often external (the world "tapping you on the shoulder"), while anxiety distractions are typically internal (a "side commentary" of what could go wrong). Remember that medication can turn down the biological "volume" of symptoms, but it doesn't build skills or "brain muscles." Use the quiet provided by medication as a window to practice the executive function habits you need. While structure and rituals are helpful for ADHD, they can feed OCD. If you have both, you must learn to sit with the distress of not performing a ritual (Exposure and Response Prevention) rather than making things "seamless".

A lawsuit brought by the AFT and others last summer resulted in a federal judge declaring the administration's attempt to outlaw “illegal discrimination” against white people, and requiring that districts and universities certify they don't practice DEI was enacted without following proper procedures. Just this month the administration declared they are dropping their appeal. This is one of numerous legal defeats the administration has suffered, however their fascist overreach continues, raising continued constitutional crises, and reinforcing the chilling effect of their racist agenda. Also, new research from scholars in New York state shows the lasting harm that ICE and DHS terrorism causes children who experience it themselves, or with a family member. Anxiety, depression, absenteeism, and chronic stress are likely just the tip of the iceberg. Thankfully a growing number of ed advocacy groups are speaking out against ICE terrorism and declaring it an existential threat to the safety of America's children and school communities. In this episode I'm excited to introduce you to Dr. Nicole Cain. She is a naturopathic doctor and author of a book called "Panic Proof: The New Holistic Solution to End Your Anxiety Forever", which is helping people understand anxiety and panic and emotional wellness, with tools available beyond what people might be hearing in standard mental health clinics. Dr. Nicole shares what drew her into this work. She talks about hitting her rock bottom moment, which so many people experience. It's that fork in the road where someone asks themselves if this is their story or if it's going to be something different. Her rock bottom moment involved continual trauma and panic and anxiety that was so somatically based in her body. It was like burning in her chest, restlessness, and involuntary muscle spasms in her arms. She wasn't sleeping, lost so much weight, and stopped having her period. She had to decide if this was her story or if it was going to be something different. Thank goodness she was able to find her way through that and discovered some really helpful tools and techniques. She got excited to share that with her patients, and they started getting better results. She started sharing it with her community, working with other counselors and doctors, and they started getting better results too. Then she started to look at the research, and it was supporting these discoveries. Now she's helping people who have tried everything to address anxiety and they are feeling hopeless. She wants people to know there is hope. There are great helpers out there to support people and provide resources. We're here to help you!
