UK CAR INDUSTRY CALLS ON NEXT GOVERNMENT FOR HELPThe SMMT has moved on to calling to the next Government, whoever that is, to help secure the future of the car industry in the UK. They have laid out five pledges it hopes any of our politicians will pick up and run with. Click here, on this link, to learn more of this desperate move in the face of political apathy from all corners. SUPERMARKETS RIP MOTORISTS OFF Supermarkets have been found to have ripped the British motorists off, due to weak competition allowing them to charge 6p per litre more than they should have. One of the recommendations, from the Competitions and Markets Authority, is to force supermarkets to publish live prices in order that we consumers can compare and find the cheapest. There is no guarantee this will be implemented. Click this BBC News article here, to learn more. AUDI SACK CEO MARKUS DUESMANNThe CEO of Audi, Markus Duesmann, has been sacked following very public criticism from VW Group CEO Oliver Blume. Duesmann was brought in by Diess, from BMW. He will be replaced by Gernot Doellner, the current VW Group strategy boss. Whilst Audi's performance has not got close to the hopes from VW, there is context that shows it is not all his fault. HYUNDAI AND TOYOTA EV ADS BANNEDAfter a brief spell of being in agreement with the Advertising Standards Authority over dealer price claims, we return to normal service. Toyota and Hyundai adverts for their EVs have been banned because they do not warn people there is only a small number of the very fastest charge points available. On top of that, the complaints stated to achieve the fastest charge there were a number of variables that could thwart the process. You can read more by clicking this article link from The Times. SURVEY SUGGESTS DEMAND FOR EVS BELOW REQUIREMENTS A survey by Auto Retail Bulletin has revealed that current demand for EVs falls below next year's imposed requirement by the Government of 22%. 60% of respondents state demand is below 15% and a third say it is below 10%. That would mean the car industry paying the UK Government a lot of money. However, most likely there will be a throttling of non compliant model availability, as we have seen previously. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 30th August. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. GM CHEVY BOLT EV BATTERY FIX COULD BRING MORE RANGE - Owners of 2017-2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV models have had to contend with a reduced driving range for many months, as GM attempted to find a remedy for a battery related fire issue that culminated with a plan to replace all battery modules. - Now GM has confirmed that it's stepping up by offering a significant range boost for those earlier Bolt EVs. In a communication to some owners sent over the weekend—spotted by friends of Green Car Reports—the automaker emphasized that the all-new lithium-ion battery modules installed in older Bolt EVs will offer “GM's most advanced Bolt chemistry.” - Their pending 8-percent boost in battery capacity is described as “resulting in a range improvement in equivalent driving conditions,” and includes a new 8-year/100,000-mile limited parts warranty covering the battery after the module replacement. - Think of it this way: It's not unusual to see 10 percent battery degradation after a few years of EV ownership. Now for the inconvenience, any range drop will be erased, and they'll likely be getting more range than the cars did when new. For a company that's depending on the reputation of its upcoming Ultium EVs for a decade of growth, that sounds like a smart move. At the Chengdu Motor Show, the firm showed off an 82.5KWh capacity power pack inside a vehicle from Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors. Under normal temperatures, SVOLT says its battery can deliver approximately 373 miles of range on a single charge and allow a car to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in under five seconds. Original Source : https://www.engadget.com/svolt-colbalt-free-battery-scale-production-234534595.html SVOLT UNVEILS COBALT-FREE BATTERY, CLAIMING FIRST COMPANY TO REACH 'SERIES PRODUCTION' - The company currently employs nearly 3,000 people worldwide, half of whom work in research and development (R&D). In fact, SVOLT has shared that over the past several years, it has dedicated 1,200 R&D personnel to cobalt-free batteries alone. - According to a press release from SVOLT, the manufacturer unveiled what it calls “the world's first cobalt-free battery pack to reach series production.” - However, while SVOLT should be recognized for bringing its EV pack to production, it's tough to justify its claim as the first. For example, Tesla removed cobalt from its lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries last year for the Standard Range Model 3 in China alongside CATL. Panasonic was also developing similar techniques alongside Tesla earlier this year. No one was seriously injured in the crash, though the Tesla did narrowly miss hitting a state trooper as he left his car to assist another driver who had broken down on the highway. - "The driver stated that [the Tesla] was in Autopilot mode," said the report from the Florida Highway Patrol. EV owners are not reliant on any particular stand-alone charging station; they use any given charging station and have no further relationship with it after they depart. Any regulatory framework for charging stations should be tailored to what Texas regulators and drivers want from the nascent charging marketplace. - The new law will help ease Texas EV owners' worries about long distance travel — one of the most common barriers to EV ownership. Without the possibility of utility-style regulation, EV charging companies can now develop charging stations more quickly and extensively. This way, a vehicle can obtain information about its surroundings and feed the driver with warnings to slow down if, for example, they entered a school zone. - Audi worked with Qualcomm, a wireless technology company, and Commsignia, a software systems provider, to test C-V2X tech in a 2021 Audi e-tron Sportback. VW Group's strategy to bring down the cost of electric vehicles involves developing common platforms to underpin models across its many brands to conserve costs. - Since these architectures will be used all over the world, "the potential to put an Audi car, production-wise, into the U.S. is even higher than now," Duesmann said Friday on Bloomberg Television. "The likelihood of us producing in the U.S. is there." - Last month, CEO Herbert Diess told Bloomberg TV that the company will decide this quarter on building more electric models in the country. LUCID GOES PUBLIC - Shares of luxury electric vehicle start-up Lucid Motors rose nearly 10% on Monday following their Nasdaq debut as the race to populate the world's roads and highways with electric vehicles continues to heat up. - The startup received about $4.4 billion in cash from the transaction, after expenses, according to reports. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund has invested more than $1 billion in Lucid. It will own about 60% of the company. The reverse-merger deal, which faced last-minute challenges being approved due to difficulties communicating to retail investors holding the stock to vote, values Lucid at around $24 billion. - The Lucid Air has a price tag of around $70,000 after tax credits, while the Air Dream Edition will cost $162,000. This is its best score this year. - #3 Volkswagen ID.3 — The German hatchback is slowly returning to form as well, getting 7,101 deliveries last month, its best score in 2021. - #4 Volkswagen ID.4 — Sitting on the vortex of the current hottest trends (plugins and compact crossovers), much is expected from the new Volkswagen, especially considering that its ID.3 sibling is yet to fill the Volkswagen Golf's admittedly big shoes. … In June, the Volkswagen crossover had 6,619 registrations. - Still outside the top 20, a mention is due for the first full month of two important models, with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 retro-futuristic XXL hatchback scoring 1,102 registrations, while the attractive Audi Q4 e-tron had 1,869 registrations in June Original Source : https://cleantechnica.com/2021/07/25/plugin-vehicles-hit-19-market-share-in-europe-in-june-tesla-model-3-has-best-month-ever/ NEW MERCEDES EQE SUV CONFIRMED FOR LAUNCH IN 2022 - Mercedes has confirmed that a third pure-electric SUV will arrive in 2022 with the launch of the Tesla Model X-rivalling EQE SUV. - It won't be the largest Mercedes electric SUV we'll see in the coming years, but it will be positioned towards the top end of the company's EV line-up, sitting above the EQC and the smaller EQA and EQB SUVs when it arrives. - The EQE badge will be shared across a large saloon and the SUV. - From the A-pillars back, the SUV takes on more traditional 4x4 proportions. Compared to the EQC, styling changes include a stubbier bonnet, longer wheelbase and a more swept-back cabin. The EQE will sit on the same EVA2 underpinnings as the EQS limo. It also marks a shift away from the conventions set by the EQC, which uses a modified version of the GLC's platform rather than dedicated electric architecture. - As well as ensuring the EQE is able to accommodate a large battery, Mercedes has also been prioritising ultra-rapid recharging with the new architecture. And I think you can understand what this means for us in terms of economies of scale," Duesmann said. - "By the end of this decade, we will have rolled out as SSP across all of our core segments and all brand groups," Duesmann said. By 2030, cars on the SSP platform would "already cover a bigger volume than PPE and MEB put together," he said. So has he. He's all about cutting back on greenhouse gases. In May, Dudley splurged on a new electric car, a metallic black Chevy Bolt EV LT. He loves it.But now it's July, and the after-school program director, 39, wonders when the state will make good on the EV-incentive rebate money it owes him.He figures he's due $4,500. After years of slow progress, there are now plans to invest 40 billion euros (S$64 billion) in 38 European factories that could turn out 1,000 gigawatt hours of batteries per year, - With average battery capacity of 60 kilowatt hours, that would be enough to power 16.7 million vehicles - EU Commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic recently said the planned factories put the EU "well on track to achieve open strategic autonomy in this critical sector". - Europe has domestic sources of lithium, notably in the Czech Republic and Germany, but it will also probably have to depend on imports. Mr Montique said Europe would likely end up "developing supply agreements with markets where there are abundant resources, favourable diplomatic ties, and strong investment frameworks" to reduce the threat of shortages. The robot can move autonomously between the cars, recognize charging connections, and plug in. Electric vehicles are on the rise, and so is the demand for charging infrastructure. This creates a noticeable disparity, which this robot aims to fix. - At the moment, the charging lid of the vehicle needs to be kept open, so the robot recognises that it needs to be charged. In the future, the team plans to remove this inconvenience, by establishing some sort of communication between the vehicle and the robot, either through an app or something else. Audi has developed more new EVs in the past couple of years than Tesla has developed in its entire existence." points out the website Quattrodaily - so, they'll be a little biased!: "According Audi CEO Markus Duesmann, electric vehicles will make up half of the automotive market by 2030. In fact, Duesmann sees such a massive shift in the demand for electric vehicles that, as long as the infrastructure can support it, he doesn’t see a reason why any customer would want internal combustion if electric vehicles are available." https://www.quattrodaily.com/audi-boss-thinks-electric-vehicles-will-be-half-of-the-market-by-2030/ FRANCE WRITES-OFF CHADEMO STANDARD IN NEW LEGISLATION "The end of the CHAdeMO fast-charging standard is on the horizon in France. While a 2017-decree made CHAdeMO mandatory for DC-charging stations alongside CCS and Type 2 by the end of 2024, the government has now revised its plans." writes electrive: "The decree, published in its revised form earlier this month, ends the requirement to implement the Japanese standard. From now on, only CCS for DC charging and Type 2 for AC charging (22 kW) is considered mandatory for newly installed and replaced fast-charging stations in France. The French decree further stresses the requirement of interoperability and introduces obligations in terms of quality of service. CPOs and networks must make their commitments public, for example, “report periodically” on the quality levels achieved." https://www.electrive.com/2021/05/10/france-writes-off-chademo-standard-in-new-legislation/ ARE ELECTRIC FIRE TRUCKS IN THE NEAR FUTURE? "However, it wasn’t until recently that innovators began to apply electric technology to emergency vehicles. Now, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is showing off North America’s first electric fire engine from Austria-based Rosenbauer Group." says Clean Fleet Report: "However, the vehicle isn’t fully electric. It’s a series plug-in hybrid like the Chevrolet Volt. Volvo Penta, which has created electric powertrains for a variety of applications, will power the Revolutionary Technology fire truck. The electric drive unit is based on one use in terminal tractors. To test durability, Rosenbauer will also test three more trucks in Berlin, Amsterdam and Dubai. The truck features two electric motors with a total output of 490 horsepower...quick-charge batteries with a charging capacity of 100 to 150 kilowatts." https://cleanfleetreport.com/feature-are-electric-fire-trucks-in-the-near-future/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feature-are-electric-fire-trucks-in-the-near-future QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM A recent survey – which I highly questioned and disagreed with – claimed 1 in 5 EV owners went back to piston power. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new Patreon Executive Producer – DCEV! VW POWER DAY "The goal of the roadmap is to significantly reduce the complexity and cost of the battery in order to make the electric car attractive and viable for as many people as possible. At the same time, the Group is aiming to secure the supply of battery cells beyond 2025. In Europe alone, six gigafactories with a total production capacity of 240 GWh are to be established by the end of the decade. Volkswagen is also vigorously pursuing expansion of the public fast-charging network globally. With this in mind, cooperations have been agreed in Europe with the energy companies BP (Great Britain), Iberdrola (Spain) and Enel (Italy)." The first two factories will operate in the Swedish city of Skellefteå and in Salzgitter. In response to increased demand, Volkswagen has decided to refocus the previous plan in relation to cell production and concentrate production of its premium cells in the Swedish gigafactory “Northvolt Ett” in Skellefteå in collaboration with Northvolt. The production of these cells is set to commence in 2023. The gigafactory currently operated by Volkswagen in Salzgitter will produce the unified cell for the high-volume segment from 2025 and develop innovations in process, design and chemistry. VW talked about their factory partners, so this doesn't sound like they're building them themselves, not 100%. UNIFIED CELL It is set to be launched as of 2023 and will be installed across brands in up to 80 percent of all electric vehicles in the Group in 2030. Volkswagen is thus aiming to gradually reduce battery costs in the entry-level segment by up to 50 percent and in the volume segment by up to 30 percent. 15% comes from cell design, 10% production, 5% in the battery system and 20% from teh material costs. "“We will use our economies of scale to the benefit of our customers when it comes to the battery too. On average, we will drive down the cost of battery systems to significantly below €100 per kilowatt hour." The new prismatic unified cell also offers the best conditions for the transition to the solid state cell – the next quantum leap in battery technology, which Volkswagen anticipates for the middle of the decade. They will use cell to pack technology to integrate them into vehicles in a way similar to BYD with their Blade Battery. According to electrive:" Audi boss Markus Duesmann indicated that the electric sedan developed as part of the Artemis project will be the first to use cell-to-pack technology. During his appearance, Duesmann also confirmed that the vehicle would be launched at the end of 2024, contradicting recent rumours that the vehicle would be delayed until at least 2025. The design phase has been completed and series development has begun" Current cells used are from LG and SKI are pouch cells. A huge blow to the South Korean companies, a fact not really picked up in the reporting I saw toady. For the worlds largest automaker to say their current technology wasn't going be used after 2023 would have been a huge blow. Both have invvested many billion of dollars on pouch cell production in China, Europe and U.S. LG builds pouch cells for Tesla, GM and Hyundai, as well as cylindrical 2170 cells for Tesla. Remember too. LG and SKI are involved in a long running a bitter legal dispute in the U.S. which culminated in VW being told they would lose supply of cells for their Tennessee factory. I thought at the time about how they would be recieved by the German boardroom - now we might have a possible answer. The new unified cells are slightly larger, but similar in shape, to a VHS casette. They will be made by CATL say rumours, not in the Power Day presentation. Industry experts also believe VW shifting to China for cells from A123 and Guoxuan. Swedish lithium-ion battery maker Northvolt seperately announced it had received an order worth more than $14 billion over 10 years from VW. VW is also increasing it's share in Northvolt. They will use LFP cells for their volume cars. Cells with a high manganese or nickel content are to be used for the larger and more powerful vehicles. Solid state batteries from their partner QuantumScape will halve the charging time and remove 100kg of weight from the cathode alone. That used a lithium-metal battery with a charge time of 12 mins for a typical EV. CHARGING Along with its partners, the company intends to operate about 18,000 public fast-charging points in Europe by 2025. This represents a five-fold expansion of the fast-charging network compared to today and corresponds to about one third of the total demand predicted on the continent for 2025. Volkswagen wants to establish about 8,000 fast-charging points throughout Europe together with BP. The fast-chargers with a charging capacity of 150 kW will be installed at a total of 4,000 BP and ARAL service stations, with the majority of these in Germany and Great Britain. In cooperation with Iberdrola, Volkswagen will cover main traffic routes in Spain. In Italy, Volkswagen wants to collaborate with Enel to establish the fast-charging network both along motorways and in urban areas. Volkswagen will invest about €400 million in the European programme as a whole by 2025, with further investments being borne by external partners. Electrify America is planning around 3,500 fast-charging points in North America by the end of the year. In China, a total of 17,000 fast-charging points are being targeted by Volkswagen by 2025 through the CAMS joint venture. GRID INTEGRATION Volkswagen intends to integrate the electric car in private, commercial and public energy systems in the future. This will allow green electricity from the solar energy system to be stored in the vehicle and fed back into the home network if needed. Not only will customers be more independent of the public power grid, they will also save money and reduce CO2 emissions. Models based on Volkswagen’s own MEB platform will support this technology from 2022. Volkswagen will also offer a complete package with all modules and digital services – from the bidirectional wall box to energy management. CONCLUSION Bloomberg said: "The push will cost some $29 billion and would make VW and its partners the world’s second-largest cell producer after China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., according to BloombergNEF. After years of trailing Tesla and the bruising experience of the diesel-emissions cheating crisis, VW has switched gears to reorganize a sprawling behemoth from the ground up. The company boasts the industry’s most comprehensive EV push, with intentions to add about 50 purely battery-powered vehicles to its lineup by 2030." I think it also tightens VW grip on the supply chains. Others are on notice. Show #834 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 9th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. OSLO HAS THE MOST EVS PER CAPITA IN THE WORLD "Oslo, Norway's capital, is now reportedly the world leader in terms of electric vehicles per capita (along with the country's second-largest city, Bergen). This comes as no surprise since Norway leads the way in EV adoption, and its capital has set itself a very ambitious target to be near-zero emissions by 2030." says InsideEVs: "Currently, around 18 percent of all passenger cars operating in the city are fully electric, 9 percent are plug-in hybrids and 5 percent are regular hybrids. And this shift isn’t only in the passenger car segment; electric vans have also gone up in popularity too, with 23 percent of all new vans bought in Q1 2020 being fully electric." https://insideevs.com/news/432911/oslo-most-evs-per-capita-globally ELON MUSK ABOUT TO GET ANOTHER $1.8 BILLION PAYDAY FROM TESLA "Musk's pay package, approved by Tesla shareholders in 2018, doesn't pay him any salary or cash bonuses. Instead, it laid out a plan that could eventually give him 20.3 million stock options over the course of 10 years, in 12 equal blocks of 1.7 million options, as long as the company hits a series of operational and market value goals." according to CNN: "The company's share price has continued to climb steadily, rising more than 70% since Musk received the previous options grant. That gives the company a current market value of $258.6 billion, and a six-month average of $138.6 billion. That new market value is closer to the next target than it might appear. Tesla shares need only to stay at this level for the next two weeks to hit the six-month average of $150 billion. Musk has yet to exercise his options." https://www.msn.com/en-us/finance/companies/elon-musk-about-to-get-another-2418-billion-payday-from-tesla/ar-BB16Aqz9 MUSK SAYS TESLA IS ‘VERY CLOSE’ TO DEVELOPING FULLY AUTONOMY VEHICLES "Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc. is “very close” to developing fully autonomous vehicles and could work out the basics of that technology as soon as this year, he said in a prerecorded video played during the World AI Conference in Shanghai." according to Bloomberg: "Musk reiterated that the electric vehicle maker has solved most of the essential challenges toward achieving Level 5 autonomy, or a fully self-driven automobile that needs no human behind the wheel. The Tesla and SpaceX chief was reaffirming a goal first expressed in 2019." https://www.msn.com/en-us/finance/companies/musk-says-tesla-is-e2-80-98very-close-e2-80-99-to-developing-fully-autonomy-vehicles/ar-BB16w6q4 TESLA IS NOT AHEAD IN LITHIUM-ION BATTERY TECH, SAYS AUDI CEO "Over the years, Tesla has been hard at work improving its batteries, and as the company heads towards its highly anticipated Battery Day event, it is becoming more and more evident that the electric car maker is one of, if not the, leader in lithium ion batteries for electric cars. " says TEslarati: "That is, of course, if one does not ask Audi CEO Markus Duesmann. In a recent talk with German magazine Focus.de, the Audi CEO...stated that he does not see Tesla being ahead in lithium ion battery tech at all. With this, it would not be long before Germany’s automakers catch up. “We’re catching up with seven-mile boots,” Duesmann said. "Interestingly enough, it will only be a matter of time before Tesla manages to capitalize on Germany’s car making mastery. The electric car maker is currently building Gigafactory Berlin, a facility that is expected to start operations next year by producing the Model Y." https://www.teslarati.com/audi-ceo-tesla-not-ahead-battery-tech/ BMW UNVEIL ITS HOTLY ANTICIPATED IX3 EV NEXT WEEK "The hotly anticipated BMW iX3, the company’s first electric vehicle that’s part of its core product line up, will be officially unveiled next week. On July 14 at 10AM CEST, the German automaker will take the covers off the EV and it’ll be the first time the public or press has seen it for real, CarScoops reports." according to The Next Web: "The iX3 has so far been reported to have a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 282 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It’ll also have a 74 kWh battery pack capable of powering the car for approximately 273 miles (440 km). With the Fiesta’s electric kit producing 450kW (the equivalent to 613 horsepower) and 1100Nm, the event will give the first clear indication of an electric car’s performance against conventional two-litre turbo charged, 600bhp rallycross Supercars. While the Projekt E series will be a standalone single-powertrain category within the World RX structure, World RX will adopt electric cars into the top category in 2022, with electric cars pitched against existing ICE machines." https://www.motorsport.com/rallycross/news/stohl-electric-ford-debut-hungary/4828329/?ic_source=home-page-widget&ic_medium=widget&ic_campaign=widget-6 NISSAN LEAF TRIALS WITH V2G TECHNOLOGY IN AUSTRALIA "Nissan’s vehicle-to-grid technology has arrived in Australia. With a government trial, called Realising Electric Vehicle Services (REVS), Nissan is preparing to launch V2G technology to the Australian market later this year." writes electrive.com: "The REVS project will see 51 Nissan Leaf EVs deployed across the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) ahead of the commercial roll-out planned by Nissan. The ACT government will operate 50 Nissan Leaf electric cars in a trial capacity, using their batteries to stabilise energy supply to the power grid." https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/09/nissan-leaf-trials-with-v2g-technology-to-start-in-australia/ FORD TRANSIT PHEV SWITCHES TO EV MODE IN CITIES AUTOMATICALLY "Ford has introduced a new automatic electric mode for the Transit Custom plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which uses geofencing to ensure the van operates with zero-emissions in cities. " says CommercialFleet website: "Using live location data, the Transit Custom PHEV vans will automatically switch to electric drive mode whenever they enter predefined areas such as congestion and low‑emission zones. Vehicle operators can also create custom “green zones” to encourage low-emission driving around locations such as schools, playgrounds and warehouses." https://www.commercialfleet.org/news/van-news/2020/07/08/ford-transit-phev-switches-to-ev-mode-in-cities-automatically ELECTRIC SCOOTER CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWS 2020 CAN ALWAYS GET WILDER "With electric scooters as numerous and troublesome as tribbles, it's amazing no one thought of a professional race series. That chasm in the market has now been filled by the Electric Scooter Championship, also known as the eSC and the eSkootr Championship. " according to Autoblog: "The inaugural eSC season is planned for 2021 "in the hearts of major cities" around the world, with a two-pronged raison d'être that wants to "make international motorsport more accessible, affordable and sustainable than ever before," and that wants to help cities by "[promoting] the cost, convenience and sustainability benefits of micromobility within the rapidly changing electric mobility landscape. With this series, we have created a superfast race machine capable of speeds greater than 100km/h, that can accelerate faster than a road car, and which will reach 100km/h in only a few seconds." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/07/09/electric-scooter-racing-esc-eskootr-championship/ [mention for Premium Partners] You can listen to all 833 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #793 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 29th May 2020. TESLA MODEL 3 WAS THE BEST SELLING CAR IN Q1 2020 "Great news comes from California, where - despite the general market slowdown - some electric cars noted brilliant sales results - including #1 for the Tesla Model 3! According to the California New Car Dealers Association, the overall market was 507,646 (down 4.3% year-over-year from 530,402) and the forecast for 2020 is quite depressing - 1.54 million vehicles." Says InsideEVs: "Four all-electric cars were in the forefront of their categories and two of them were #1: Tesla Model 3 (18,856, up 19.3%): #1 in Near Luxury (52.2% share) Tesla Model X (2,826, up 10.9%): #3 in Luxury Mid Size SUV (10.3% share) Chevrolet Bolt EV (2,654, up 16.1%): #1 in Subcompact (22.2% share) Tesla Model S (1,561, down 27.0%): #3 in Luxury and High End Sports Cars (11.7% share)" Tesla Model 3 - the best selling car The first quarter of 2020 positively surprised us with the first place among all types of cars, not only passenger but also SUV/trucks, for the all-electric Tesla Model 3: Tesla Model 3 - 18,856 Honda Civic - 18,001 Toyota Camry - 17,871 Toyoa RAV4 - 17,261 Toyota Corolla - 15,575 Honda Accord - 12,551 https://insideevs.com/news/426084/california-tesla-model-3-best-selling-q12020/ TESLA SOLVES MODEL Y FROZEN DOOR HANDLES AND CHARGING PORT WITH SIMPLE TRICK "In his recent video, the JerryRigEverything host pointed out that the Model Y’s door handles, while visually identical to the first production Model 3s, actually feature improvements that make them less prone to getting stuck in ice. Tesla designed the Model Y’s door handles so that they can get physically pressed on both sides, allowing owners to break ice that has built up." Says Teslarati: "Just like door handles, it is very inconvenient to deal with a charging port that’s frozen solid. Tesla owners have dealt with this issue in a variety of ways, such as preheating their vehicles for some time to melt away the ice. But for the Model Y, Tesla has adopted a heated charging port, which should proactively avoid ice from building up. This should allow owners to conveniently plug and unplug their Model Y despite temperatures being below zero" https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-frozen-door-handles-charging-port-fix-video/ 2021 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME PRICE ANNOUNCED, STARTS AT $38,100 "Toyota dropped a bit of a surprise last November at the LA Auto Show. It wasn’t that Toyota announced a plug-in hybrid version of the RAV4 called the RAV4 Prime – that was expected. What we didn’t expect was that it would pack 302 combined horsepower (225 kilotwatts) and hit 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. That’s not exactly slow, and now we know how much it will cost to have a hot-rod Toyota SUV that’s also good on gas." reports Motor1: "The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime starts at $38,100, not including $1,120 in destination and delivery charges. It's still under $40,000 with that upcharge factored in, but it's also the most expensive RAV4 Toyota offers." https://www.motor1.com/news/426090/2021-toyota-rav4-prime-cost/ MERCEDES-BENZ EQC SOLD 700 SINCE LAUNCH "The Mercedes-Benz EQC has been talked about for years. It's seen as compelling to many, not only because it's a Mercedes crossover, but also because it should work well to compete with Tesla. It was supposed to launch in the U.S. soon, if not already, but the EV has been delayed until 2021. Perhaps once the EQC is available on our 'SUV-friendly' shores, it will find more success." Says InsideEVs: "In the meantime, according to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, the luxury automaker only sold 397 EQC's in 2019, following by just 276 so far this year in its home country. Mercedes hasn't officially reported these sales figures, so they could be better or worse officially. However, even if they're within a range of some 500 to 1,500 sales, the situation is clearly dire. This is especially true since Mercedes has been promoting the vehicle heavily, and has plans to produce some 50,000 units this year. Despite the global pandemic, EV sales have been respectable, if not solid, in Germany and Europe. In fact, over the last year, Audi sold 4,500 e-trons and Tesla sold 8,700 Model 3 sedans in Germany." https://insideevs.com/news/426003/mercedes-eqc-sales-poor/ WHEN THE BOSS HAS TO QUEUE Raf Fiol @raf_fiol I just met @elonmusk at a supercharger! And he talked to me! More details... this was after the scrubbed SpaceX launch yesterday. I was at the Melbourne, FL supercharger. I was standing next to my car when a white Model X backed into a stall two cars down. I looked over as the passenger door opens and I see ... I see him get out and he starts walking towards me. I’m obviously surprised and he definitely sees that. I blurt out “Elon?”, and he smiles and continues to walk towards me. He says ... He says something to the effect of “thank you for being a Tesla owner and supporting the mission." A small crowd begins to form. We talked about the scrubbed launch, the Model Y, and auto insurance in FL. Someone then... congratulated him on the birth of his son and he looks over at his Model X and said “thank you, he’s in the car.” At some point the Falcon doors open and out comes Grimes to hand him a mask! He stuffs it in his pocket as she hurries back to the car. He stayed and talked for at least 15 minutes. He was super friendly and seemed genuinely interested to hear what people had to say. Super duper cool guy. It was an absolutely amazing experience! He arrived in a white Model X, followed by another white Model X. Notice the line of men in black suits in the background. Elon’s security duty. NEW AUDI CEO SETTING UP ARTEMIS PROJECT "Two months after taking office as the new CEO at Audi, Markus Duesmann is establishing a unit for the accelerated development of additional automobile models. Artemis will focus on new technologies for electric, highly automated driving with a specific model reference. Its first task is to create a highly efficient electric car that is scheduled to be on the road as early as 2024. " according to Green Car Congress: "Hitzinger will work with a team of automotive and technology experts to—as a first step—“develop a pioneering model for Audi quickly and unbureaucratically,” says Duesmann. Resources and technologies of the entire Volkswagen Group are potentially available for this. Duesmann and his Volkswagen Group colleagues also expect the Artemis project to provide a blueprint for the future agile development of cars throughout the Volkswagen Group." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/05/20200530-artemis.html LARGEST ELECTRIC AIRPLANE YET TAKES OFF IN THE USA "The companies magniX and AeroTEC have announced the successful maiden flight of the allegedly world’s largest all-electric aircraft, an all-electric Cessna Grand Caravan 208B. The half-hour flight in the US state of Washington apparently went without a hitch." Says elective: " The aircraft is an 18-year-old Cessna Grand Caravan, which was converted to an electric propulsion system with a magni500 electric motor by the engineering firm AeroTEC. The goal is to be able to fly the distance of 160 kilometers with full load by the end of 2021. The Cessna Grand Caravan 208B can carry a maximum of 14 passengers – instead of four to five in the eCaravan at present. This is to be made possible by new batteries, such as lithium sulfur batteries. A switch to fuel cells is also still in the pipeline." https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/29/largest-electric-airplane-yet-takes-off-in-the-usa/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK What are your desired specs for an electric pick-up truck? VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SPIED IN 'COUPE' FORM Autoblog says: "a fan of one of our spy photographers happened upon an ID.4 prototype and shared them with said photographer and us. It shows that the crossover will be getting a low-roof "coupe" variant. It was thinly disguised, too, with the most elaborate camouflage being some amusingly fake tail pipes."The crossover has a similar size and proportion to the ID.4 prototypes we've seen at shows and in testing. It shares the same curvy bodywork, too. But the roof slopes downward from about the back of the rear doors all the way to the tail to give it the fastback roof that has proven so popular among luxury crossover buyers. It looks like rear headroom may not be particularly reduced compared to some other fastback crossovers, but luggage space certainly will. This example also features a natty little wing at the tip of the hatch for some more sporty flair. The standard ID.4 is expected to have an 83-kWh battery pack good for about 250 miles of range, too. " GTX is supposedly the electric GTI, and 4 wheel drive. https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/29/vw-id4-coupe-ev-gtx-spy-shots/#slide-2228895 OPEL VIVARO-E ARRIVES THIS YEAR "Opel unveiled more details about the new Vivaro-e that arrives later this year. It comes with a 100 kW motor and two battery options that offer a WLTP range of 230 and 330 km (142 and 205 miles). While there’s no official information about the battery cells, I assume these are the same that are used in the Peugeot e-208 and Opel Corsa-e." says Pedro at PushEVs: "The Opel Vivaro-e seems to be a great alternative to the veteran Nissan e-NV200, which only gets a WLTP range of 200 km (124 miles) from a 40 kWh battery. Since Carlos Ghosn left, Nissan really dropped the ball regarding electric vehicles." From the press release: For the “last mile” and beyond: up to 230 or 330 kilometres electric range (WLTP1) Powerful: 100 kW (136hp) electric motor with 260Nm torque Easy to use: variety of charging options, payment via “Free2Move Services” app Comfortable: check state-of-charge or programme charging times via “myOpel” app Unique: the only compact electric LCV available ex works with optional trailer hitch Safety for professionals: driver assistance systems enhance protection https://pushevs.com/2020/04/28/opel-vivaro-e-arrives-this-year/ TESLA MODEL 3 WAS #2 BEST SELLING CAR IN EUROPE IN MARCH 2020 "Stats for the 27 European markets reveal a decrease in new passenger car registrations by 52% to 848,800 in March (and 3.04 million in Q1), which is the worst result in 38 years. In terms of the type of powertrain, electrified cars - xEVs (BEVs, PHEVs, HEVs) - expanded in March by 15% year-over-year to 147,500 and a record market share of 17.4% (compared to 7.3% a year ago). xEV expansion was possible only because of plug-ins, as hybrids actually went down by 11%. The Tesla Model 3 turned out to be the second best-selling car overall for the month of March 2020. That's the second podium for the Model 3 in Europe, after a third place in December 2019. This time, the volume was lower - above 15,000 compared to over 22,000, but as the overall market collapsed, it was possible for the Model 3 to beat all but the Volkswagen Golf." https://insideevs.com/news/419117/tesla-model3-best-selling-europe-march-2020/ FORD FILES TRADEMARK FOR LINCOLN EGLIDE "We just received news from members on MachEClub.com, a Ford Mustang Mach-E forum, that the automaker filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. More specifically, it's for the LINCOLN eGLIDE." says Mark at InsideEVs: "Initially, people called it the Lincoln eGlide EV, but there's nothing official that points to this being the case. However, we do know that both Ford and Lincoln are ramping up their electric vehicle efforts. Sadly, though, Lincoln was supposed to have an upcoming EV project in partnership with Rivian Automotive, but that has now been canceled due to COVID-19. Some speculate that eGlide could have something to do with a vehicle suspension, an operating mode, or a component. Could it be something like a Ludicrous Mode or Launch Mode? Will Lincoln bring the world's most coddling electric SUV to market?" https://insideevs.com/news/419062/lincoln-eglide-patent-filed/ POLESTAR 2 RECEIVES TOP MARKS IN CRASH SAFETY TESTS "Polestar announced on April 28 that its newest car underwent crash safety tests. It is the first vehicle in the company’s lineup to feature Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) technology and front-inner-side airbags. Polestar prioritized the protection of its battery pack, noting the “crucial” task of preventing the vehicle’s power source from being punctured or damaged in a collision as well." says Teslarati: ". It also protects the battery from permanent damage. Polestar utilized a Severe Partial Offset Crash (SPOC) block to help accomplish this, which is a reflective solid aluminum barrier that his housed on the bottom edge of the vehicle’s front firewall. The SPOC block minimizes the possibility of objects coming into the passenger cabin or toward the battery pack in the event of a frontal collision. The presence of this barrier also makes up for the lack of an internal combustion engine, which usually adds a barrier for passengers in the event of a crash. Polestar announced on April 23 that the Polestar 2 was available for sale in the U.S. with a starting price of $59,900. Deliveries are expected to begin Summer 2020." https://www.teslarati.com/polestar-2-top-marks-crash-safety/ SK INNOVATION TO SPEND $1.5B ON GEORGIA PLANTS, AS ‘CENTER’ OF WORLD EV BATTERY INDUSTRY "SK Innovation, a South Korean battery supplier for Volkswagen and Ford, said on Tuesday it will spend $727 million to build a second EV battery plant in the United States. Construction is expected to begin in July, with battery production slated to start in 2023." according to Bradley at electrek: "The company is currently building its first factory in the United States, in Georgia, with a planned investment of $903 million. That plant can output 9.8GWh factory, primarily to serve Volkswagen EV production in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A March article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said the first factory is expected to produce enough batteries to power 250,000 electric vehicles per year at full capacity. The proposed No.2 plant will be even bigger than the first one. Today’s report by Reuters said annual capacity for the second plant will be 11.7 gigawatt-hours of batteries. But the story last month in AJC reported a long term vision on a larger scale: The site can accommodate a facility to produce 50 gigawatt [hours] worth of batteries or five times the production of the project’s first two phases, a company official said." https://electrek.co/2020/04/28/sk-innovation-to-spend-1-5b-on-georgia-plants-as-center-of-world-ev-battery-industry/ AUDI WITHDRAWS FROM DTM TO FOCUS ON FORMULA E "Audi will leave the German Touring Car series (DTM) at the end of this year and concentrate fully on Formula E. “With this energy, we’re going to drive our transformation into a provider of sporty, sustainable electric mobility forward,” says Markus Duesmann, Chairman of the Board at AUDI." reports electrive: "The DTM withdrawal is one of Duesmann’s first high-profile decisions the former BMW board joined the board on 1 April." https://www.electrive.com/2020/04/28/audi-withdraws-from-dtm-to-focus-on-formula-e/ UK BLOWN AWAY AS HUGE NEW WIND FARM WILL SOON POWER 170,000 HOMES "A 50-turbine wind farm in southern Scotland will be up and running by 2023, sustainable energy firm Vattenfall confirmed this week." says EuroNews.com: "South Kyle Windfarm, near Dalmellington, is set to be the firm’s largest onshore wind farm in the United Kingdom. Once construction is complete, the turbines will be able to power approximately 170,000 UK homes, saving nearly 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. That’s the equivalent of 65,000 cars being taken off the road. The deal agreed by Vattenfall and Greencoat UK Wind will cost £320 million. While this is a substantial amount, according to renewable UK, investments such as these pay off as “onshore wind offers the most cost-effective choice for new electricity in the UK, bar none - it is cheaper than gas, nuclear, coal and other renewables.” Fully operational by 2023. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 11th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. An update on a story I mentioned briefly yesterday...with many news outlets confirming the news such as Bloomberg saying "Nissan Motor Co. said it will investigate instances of misconduct involving falsified data about exhaust emissions and fuel economy, the second controversy in less than a year for the automaker whose vehicle-inspection scandal had led to the recall of about 1.2 million vehicles. The data falsification...occurred on 19 models across five plants in Japan. During the checks, Nissan found out that employees misrepresented temperature and humidity data in the testing chamber and manipulated emission data on carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The automaker has hired a law firm to investigate the matter further." TESLA TO BUILD GIGAFACTORY IN SHANGHAI We knew it was coming, just a matter of when not if, and it has just been confirmed Tesla will build a factory in Shanghai, the city government announced. WSJ said: "The electric-car maker will set up a plant with an annual capacity of 500,000 vehicles, the Shanghai authorities said in a statement. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk was in Shanghai to sign a memorandum of cooperation with Mayor Ying Yong". But why build a factory there? Once Tesla Shanghai has the new Gigafactory at capacity, they'll be building half a million cars for the Chinese market without paying the new import duties. Plus they could move the cheaper cars, like base Model 3 and base Model Y to be built there with lower costs, to increase margins. We know that Freemont is full and Elon has said in the past the Model Y won't be built there. Tesla said in a statement to Bloomberg: "We expect construction to begin in the near future after we get all the necessary approvals and permits. From there, it will take roughly two years until we start producing vehicles and then another two to three years before the factory is fully ramped up to produce around 500,000 vehicles per year for Chinese customers. Tesla is deeply committed to the Chinese market, and we look forward to building even more cars for our customers here. Today’s announcement will not impact our U.S. manufacturing operations, which continue to grow.” "Tesla’s lone car-assembly plant is in Fremont, California, where it’s built about 88,000 cars through the first half of this year, and it has a giant battery factory in neighbouring Nevada. After moving ahead in China, the world’s largest market for electric vehicles, Tesla has said it will reveal plans toward the end of 2018 to build a plant in Europe." Although this isn't a financial podcast and I never pretend to understand the finer subtleties of a balance sheet, TEsla has $2.7bn in cash at the end of Q2 2018, with a plan for the Model 3 to make them profitable between now and the end of the calendar year. China has been an investor in Tesla before, with Tencent Holdings Ltd. spending $1.8 billion to buy a 5 percent stake in March 2017. MERCEDES ECITARO IS AN FULLY ELECTRIC CITY BUS At a major launch event yesterday, Mercedes revealed their all electric eCitaro bus. They said the powertrain has electric motors at the wheel hubs. Lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of up to about 243 kWh provide the power. The range is 150km. They are modular in design: the batteries are split between up to ten modules, each supplying around 25 kWh. As well as two battery modules on the vehicle roof, the standard equipment includes four modules in the rear of the bus. In the eCitaro, these are taking the place of today's powertrain combination of combustion engine and transmission. Depending upon customer requirements, another two or four battery modules are mounted on the roof of the eCitaro. They're using prismatic cells. Mercedes-Benz cools the batteries to ensure that they remain at the ideal temperature, thereby ensuring maximum charging capacity, performance capability, and service life. This cooling is undertaken by a separate battery cooler mounted on the roof. At extreme outside temperatures, the standard passenger-compartment climate control system is used to boost the cooling of the batteries. They see an upgrade path too as battery technology increase: "transport operators will even be able to increase the range of the existing eCitaro buses by swapping out the batteries at a later time and thereby further increase the operational flexibility." They are also talking about solid state batteries, which they predict will offer a 30% increase from 243kWh to 400kWh from 2020. However due to design these won't be swappable with the Li-Ion batteries but sold as a different range. VOLKSWAGEN EXPANDS "ROADMAP E" — AN E-MOBILITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE IN CHINA On Monday 9th July Volkswagen Group China signed a "Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)" with JAC and SEAT in Berlin, to establish a new "Research & Development" center with a focus on developing electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies, as well as a competitive platform for battery electric vehicles (BEV). SEAT brand will be introduced to China by 2020/2021. This new Memorandum of Understanding will play a key role in Volkswagen Group’s e-mobility plans for China, in order to meet the demands of Chinese customers. Together with JAC and SEAT, Volkswagen Group China will establish an R&D center to develop electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies specifically tailored to the Chinese market, including relevant parts and components and core technologies, with completion planned for 2021. CHINA'S CATL TO BUILD ITS FIRST EUROPEAN EV BATTERY FACTORY IN GERMANY "Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) will build its first production site in Europe in Germany, agreeing a major contract with BMW to supply lithium-ion batteries." according to a report from Reuters, which adds to more of what we've previously reported on this story:" A contract to build the new plant was signed on Monday during a visit to Germany by China's Premier Li Keqiang. Around 240 million euros (S$379 million) will be invested in the first phase of the project, Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thuringia's minister of economic affairs, told journalists. BMW plans to source 4 billion euros of battery cells from CATL over the next few years, with 1.5 billion euros coming from the new site in Erfurt in eastern Germany, the carmaker's purchasing head, Markus Duesmann, said. CATL, the world's largest maker of battery cells for electric vehicles, said the new factory was just its first step in Europe." says BusinessTimes.com.sg: "The CATL factory will create about 600 jobs and reach production of 14 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2022. CATL reached shipments of 12 GWh in 2017." Deussmann also added: "BMW had invested in some of the costs for the CATL factory in Erfurt, but declined to say how much. Duesmann said BMW was investing in cell research but a decision on whether to produce battery cells itself had not been made. "I don't rule it out," he said. BMW is "very comfortable" with two suppliers of battery cells at the moment, but could add a third and is in talks with eight manufacturers, he added". NOW ANYONE CAN CONFIGURE A MODEL 3 LA Times reports: "Anyone can access the Tesla’s Model 3 “online configurator” and lay down a non-refundable $3,500 cash payment; the delivery date is determined after the money’s been transferred to Tesla." I tried it here from the UK, but with my US VPN connected, and the TEsla.com site hadn't updated. "The stated wait time a Model 3 runs from immediate delivery to as many as nine months for the company’s long-promised $35,000 base price version. But each customer is informed individually about his or her specific delivery date." Tesla replied to a request for comment with this: "“Tesla has always required this deposit for all of its vehicle orders, including Model S and Model X, given that we build cars to our customers’ specifications. That deposit goes towards the purchase price of the vehicle.” We heard at the start of July, when Tesla confirmed they had made 5,000 MOdel 3's per week, that the official number of outstanding orders was 420,000. Tim Pollard, writing for the always-excellent CAR Magazine here in the UK reports that: "Skoda is working on a range of performance electric vehicles loosely dubbed e-RS to indicate the EV equivalent of the Czech company’s vRS go-faster brand. Global sales and marketing chief Alain Favey told CAR magazine that Skoda is planning performance spin-offs of its future EVs, which are in development and ready to launch from next year. First up is the e-Citigo, basically a Czech-branded Volkswagen e-Up testbed, due for launch in late 2019; but this is just the warm-up act for the main event - the new bespoke EV crossover due a year later in autumn 2020, which will be the first to get Skoda’s proposed new e-RS derivative." Favey said to CAR: "There will be an e-RS,the logic is the same as for vRS. It’s not about performance as such… it’s more about the look, the sporty seats, the experience. That’s the spirit of vRS.’ "Expect a 300-mile range, design consistent with regular Skodas, a fast-charging network at main dealers, new, floating instrumentation and the very latest in connectivity, according to Favey." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/industry-news/skoda/skoda-e-rs-electric-vrs-performance-cars-from-2020/ VW EYES GOODWOOD RECORD WITH ITS I.D. R PIKES PEAK ELECTRIC RACER "Hardly content with shattering the all-time record at Pikes Peak, Volkswagen wants its I.D. R Pikes Peak electric race car to be the one to beat on other tracks. It's taking the racer to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the south of England this week, with designs on setting not only the electric car record at the Goodwood Hillclimb, but perhaps the overall benchmark too." according to Engadget: "The Goodwood festival marks the competitive debut of VW's car in Europe, while it will also host the European debut of Tesla's Model 3." https://www.engadget.com/2018/07/09/vw-pikes-peak-electric-race-car-goodwood-hillclimb/ MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV REMAINS UK’S NUMBER ONE PLUG-IN VEHICLE "The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV continues to be the UK’s best-selling plug-in electrified vehicle. Sales of Mitsubishi Motors’ petrol/electric plug-in hybrid SUV totalled 537 units in June and 3,732 units so far this calendar year, ahead of every other pure EV and plug-in hybrid on the market" as reported yesterday by Automotive world.
