What if your students used what they're learning to tackle meaningful challenges- right in your classroom? If you've ever watched our students struggle with real-world problem-solving, you're not alone. Many are used to following directions—not thinking like innovators. But what if, through a simple shift in learning design, we could help them approach our subject like entrepreneurs, creators, and problem-solvers instead? In this episode, we sit down with Jobert Ingwenya, an experiential, entrepreneurial educator who helps us move from lesson-givers to learning guides, using entrepreneurial thinking to make learning more relevant and hands-on. He shares how we can support students in taking ownership of their learning by developing real products and solutions—no business background required. How to turn our curriculum into a launchpad for real problem-solving Why stepping back as "lesson givers" leads to more engaged, independent learners The surprising skills students develop when they take the lead on developing real products and solutions Simple ways to start—without extra prep, funding, or special resources Ready to help our students think more critically, collaborate more effectively, and connect learning to the real world? Let's explore how to make that shift happen—together. Having the ability to manage uncertainty is helpful in all professions, but perhaps especially so in medicine where uncertainty abounds and the stakes for managing it are high. Despite that, medical students receive little training in this area, something which our guest today, Dr. Jenny Moffett of RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dublin, is working to change. “There are approaches to uncertainty that can be learned. We can change our perspective and perceptions around uncertainty, stepping away from always viewing it as something aversive, but perhaps maybe looking at it with a little bit more curiosity and openness, and that's definitely a transformation that faculty can make,” says Dr. Moffett, the program director of the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education. In addition to a perspective shift, Moffett also believes providers should develop skills to talk about uncertainty with patients in an open and honest way. “Clinicians can say, I'm on this journey with you. I don't have all of the answers, but we have paths, we have options, and I'll be there with you as we work them out.” Join host Caleb Furnas as he explores Dr. Moffett's fascinating work in this area which includes development of an immersive puzzle game that encourages students to address complex, ambiguous, and unpredictable issues.Mentioned in this episode:RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. In this episode, Michael Shanahan is joined by experienced specialist dyslexia tutor Sally Andrew to discuss The Literacy Support Kit (LSK)—a comprehensive set of resources designed to support children for whom standard literacy intervention programs are too difficult. Sally Andrew Sally holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Dyslexia and Literacy from the University of York, UK. Sally has been tutoring students with dyslexia for 25 years and has trained many parents and educators in evidence-based multisensory interventions for dyslexia. Sally is the director of By Your Side Tutoring. Sally formally ran the popular Teaching Students with Dyslexia (TSD) suite of training for Specialist Multisensory Literacy Teachers. Sally co-developed the Literacy Support Kit and Word Cracker suite of morphology resources. Show notes Michael and Sally explore the challenges faced by students living with dyslexia, dysgraphia, intellectual disability, and fine motor difficulties, sharing strategies and practical solutions to bridge gaps in literacy instruction. They emphasize the importance of customized resources, multi-sensory learning, and breaking skills into fine-grained steps to ensure student success. Key Topics Discussed 1. Why Some Students Struggle with Standard Intervention Not all students progress at the expected rate in structured literacy programs. Some need more fine-grained steps to break down learning concepts. Kids living with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and intellectual disability often require additional scaffolding. The LSK provides targeted resources to address these challenges. 2. The Importance of Teacher Discretion in Literacy Instruction Teaching should not be one-size-fits-all. Experienced tutors develop custom resources based on student needs. If a student is struggling with a concept, slowing down and focusing on prerequisite skills is essential. Using varied formats to present the same material helps build automaticity. 3. Supporting Kids with Alphabet Difficulties Many students, even in Year 5 or 6, do not truly know the alphabet beyond the song. Some students believe “LMNOP” is a single letter due to how they learned the alphabet song. Intervention strategies: Using picture alphabets to build phoneme awareness. Matching games to reinforce letter recognition. Writing letters over pre-written models to build confidence. 4. Helping Students Blend Sounds (Phonemic Awareness) Some students struggle to blend sounds into words, making decoding very difficult. Key strategies in LSK: Chunking sounds together rather than focusing on individual phonemes. Onset and rime activities (e.g., working on “at,” “it,” “in” before full words). Repeated exposure through varied activities to build automaticity. 5. Handwriting as a Literacy Barrier Fine motor control issues can make writing exhausting. Poor handwriting can lead to low confidence and avoidance of writing tasks. LSK handwriting support includes: Pre-writing activities (tracing, erasing letters, solving mazes). Cursive instruction to improve fluency. Explicit teaching of letter formation and spacing. 6. Keeping Students Engaged with Repetitive Learning Students need hundreds of repetitions to master basic literacy skills. Standard drills can be boring and frustrating. LSK provides a variety of engaging activities, including: Chunky Pig – A game reinforcing phoneme blending. Make-a-Chunk sheets – Matching and handwriting exercises. Tracking sheets – Strengthening phonemic awareness. Close reading sheets – Filling in missing words from context. 7. Addressing Sticking Points in Phonics Programs Some students get stuck on complex spelling rules (e.g., C/K rule, open/closed syllables). LSK removes these difficult concepts temporarily so students can continue making progress. Focus remains on: Mastering short vowel sounds before moving to long vowels. Learning suffixes before tackling multi-syllable words. 8. High-Frequency Words: A Key Component High-frequency words are essential for reading fluency. Traditional word lists cause stress for many students (e.g., weekly school spelling tests). LSK includes: Traceable worksheets for repeated practice. Snakes and Ladders game using high-frequency words. Word search puzzles for additional reinforcement. 9. The Power of Repetition and Daily Practice Flashcard Decks: Each new letter or sound is added to a child's personal deck. Spelling Drills: Structured practice with traceable letters for extra support. Daily reinforcement builds automaticity without overwhelming students. 10. Who Can Use the Literacy Support Kit? Teachers and tutors looking to support struggling students. Parents who want a structured, easy-to-follow literacy program. Intervention specialists who need additional materials to customize instruction. The LSK is simple enough that parents can use it at home, even without formal training. Resources & Links The Literacy Support Kit (LSK) Word Cracking Membership: Now includes LSK resources, morphology materials, and training courses. Games and Activities for Literacy Handwriting Support Resources Final Thoughts Sally and Michael reflect on their years of experience working with children living with learning difficulties and how the most challenging students make you a better teacher. They emphasize the importance of adapting instruction to fit individual student needs and giving students small successes to build confidence. Subscribe to stay updated on new resources and teaching strategies. Have questions or feedback? Leave a comment or contact us. This episode is packed with practical advice, strategies, and free resources to support struggling readers and writers. Tune in and explore how the Literacy Support Kit can make a difference.

About the lecture: The legacy of past human activities strongly shapes current landscapes and ecosystems, with today's actions set to leave similar long-term impacts. Predicting future landscape changes, however, requires a thorough understanding of past ones, yet most land and habitat change studies are limited to recent decades—starting only in the 1980s with the availability of 30-m satellite data or in the 2000s with commercial high-resolution satellites. This presentation will introduce an alternative approach, using high-resolution imagery from the 1960s U.S. Corona spy satellites series to trace landscape changes over the past half-century. Focusing on the diverse Caucasus region, with its wide variation in elevation, climate, ecosystems, and historical land-use patterns, this presentation will highlight methods to create detailed land cover maps capturing landscapes before and after the collapse of the Soviet Union. These historical maps provide a unique perspective on land changes, as well as habitat changes for wild species. This presentation will underscore the value of 1960s spy satellite data for understanding long-term land cover and habitat changes of large ungulate species, offering new insights into historical land use and its implications for wildlife and conservation. About the speaker: Afag (pronounced ah-fah) is a remote sensing and conservation expert with extensive field experience in the Caucasus region. Currently an Honorary Fellow at the SILVIS Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (https://silvis.forest.wisc.edu/people/), she holds a PhD in Forestry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Postgraduate Diploma in Wildlife Conservation from the University of Oxford. Afag's research employs high-resolution satellite data to map historical land cover in the Caucasus eco-region, investigating long-term landscape changes and their impacts on wild habitats. Her past work has contributed to projects in wild mammal species' reintroduction, habitat management, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation, and she has shared her findings in various publications (link to google scholar – https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=sqSt3H4AAAAJ&hl=en&oi=ao). In addition, employed as a data scientist at Spatial Informatics Group (SIG), she is currently involved in environmental projects in developing countries. Fluent in three languages and conversant in two others, Afag brings a global perspective to her work.

Rachel received her first degree in Hertfordshire in the UK (near London). When she finished, she decided to have some time out of education and worked in London in the financial industry for three years. In 1989, she moved with her husband to be to Hong Kong and got a job lecturing in English and Business Communication at the Open University. Whilst in Hong Kong, she also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and and a Masters Degree in Lifelong learning. In Hong Kong, she also had two children, her eldest child was born in 1994 and suffered with ear infections and reacted badly to antibiotics. In desperation, she attended a six week evening course in homeopathy with a homeopath who was practising in Hong Kong, but interestingly born in Tasmania, and her and her family's lives changed. Homeopathy then became the basis of the healthcare in her family. Rachel moved back to the UK, back to the country in Suffolk, in 1999 and settled into family life on a small holding. She continued to work in distance education online while the children were small, but 15 years ago, she decided to retrain to be a Homeopath and has now been qualified and practicing in Suffolk for ten years. Alongside Homeopathy, she also offers Bach Flower Therapy, Homeobotanical therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Kinesiology (using NAET which is an allergy elimination technique) and Presentchild® Translation. Presentchild® is a therapy that can really help to improve communication within the family unit. During lockdown, she also trained to be an end of life counsellor using the Before I Go method. She also teaches for the organisation 'Homeopathy at Wellie Level' which teaches farmers how to use homeopathy with their animals. Rachel loves to combine her educational background with her profession now, teaching people how to use Homeopathy effectively. Today on the Art + Business + Murals Podcast I am speaking with abstract artist, Natalie Parker. Her expressive paintings explore the rawness of human emotion through gestural mark making, contrasting brushstrokes and colour. With a paint brush in her hand since kindergarten, art has been the vehicle through which this introvert can express herself to the world.Formally trained with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Postgraduate Diploma of Secondary School Art Teaching, Natalie's art knowledge and experience provides her with a wealth of ideas to explore in the studio. Natalie's process begins with a colour palette and feeling in mind as she takes to the canvas. Often beginning with expressive brushstrokes and gestural mark making. As the work begins to take form she pulls back and assesses what to leave and what to remove. With layers of colour and a push and pull conversation emerging, Natalie remains in the dance of the work until resolution and peace arise.Through her work, Natalie aims to bring a sense of calm and order and show that beauty and joy can emerge in even the most challenging seasons of life. In this interview we talk about the business side of art, developing your art style and balancing parenting and art. Ep 55: Homeopathic Facial Analysis with Grant Bentley Grant Bentley is from Melbourne, Australia and has been working and studying in various fields of natural therapies since 1987. Grant is a qualified Homeopath and Naturopath and has studied Clinical Hypnosis and has a Post Graduate Diploma in Eriksonian Psychotherapy. Grant is the current principal and senior lecturer of the Victorian College of Classical Homeopathy (1995 – current). The Victorian College of Classical Homeopathy led by Principal Grant Bentley has been clinically trialing the relationship between facial structure and successful chronic prescribing since 2000. Graduating practitioners use facial analysis with every chronic case. Homeopathic Facial Analysis (HFA) produces consistently successful results using Hahnemannian concepts of homeopathy with a miasmatic diagnostic (facial structure). Trials have been conducted in the private clinics of Grant Bentley and a number of Melbourne based VCCH graduates. Trials have also been undertaken at community clinics located at both Remedy Group (Lilydale, Rowville) and the Orwil St Community House (Frankston). Consistent results of 80%+ across numerous chronic diseases have occurred. This system doesn't treat specific diseases but treats the patient energetically, allowing their own innate healing abilities to work in synchronicity with their body, immune system and emotions. The clinics have been used to determine a link between facial structure and miasmatic classification of polychrests. From this research Grant Bentley has devised a method known as Homeopathic Facial Analysis (HFA) which he has been teaching to both undergraduate and postgraduate students around the world.

In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the two most important questions: “what's real?” & “who matters?” Sentientism is "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings." The video of our conversation is here on YouTube. We discuss: 00:00 Welcome 02:41 Jane's Intro - Lawyer (“I didn't really like that very much”), teaching high school (“enjoyable… but exhausting”), now academic research and teaching - Human rights PhD, now animal law focused “I often think about concepts that exist in human rights literature and think about how they might apply… to the animal rights space” 04:40 What's Real? - Catholic and Anglican Christian parents but neither “practicing”. Although some tension between the two families - Attending Lutheran school at 15 “Lacking in some self-confidence… the religious angle… allowed me a way to feel like I could connect with something… I tried really hard… but I always struggled with trying to make myself believe something that… doesn't have a great deal of evidence.” - “I think there is something other than what we can see, touch, feel and taste – but I'm not going to commit to knowing what that is” - What we can sense “humans can generally agree on those things… beyond that, there may be more – I don't know” - “Some very intelligent people I know are deeply religious… I have no problem with that except where they decide that that allows them to hurt others. That's where I draw the line.” 11:42 What Matters? - Parents' religions didn't affect childhood ethics much - Lutheran… “By and large… big hearted, generous, empathetic, wonderful people.” But “I took great pleasure… in debating the alleged sins of homosexuality with some of the pastors.” - “I always found issues with these rigid rules that didn't really make a lot of sense to me” - Developing morality through reading fiction “I read a truck-load… through fiction I developed a strong sense of empathy… that's what drove me then and drives me today” 14:54 Who Matters - “Veganism back then was absolutely radical” 47:00 A Better World? 01:15:57 Follow Jane - “I don't do a lot of social media… people can of course email me!” - Jane at Deakin - Jane's Cambridge Centre for Animal Rights Law talk: “Sentience and Intrinsic Worth as a Pluralist Foundation for Fundamental Animal Rights” ...and much more. This week on the conversation we are joined by the marvellous Sarah Thomas from New Zealand. One of my favourite contributiors to safety conversations on LinkedIn and someone who genuinely thinks before speaking. Sarah Thomas is an experienced HSE professional who began her career in safety in 2002. However, as a surf lifeguard, professional ski patroller, outdoor instructor, and volunteer St John ambulance officer, she has lived and breathed safety from a young age. Her six years with the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserves also gave her advanced command and communication training. Sarah gained a BA/LLB at the University of Canterbury and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (HSE) from Massey University. She has worked as a safety coordinator, safety specialist and National HSE/Human Resources Manager. During her career, Sarah has helped develop nationwide health and safety systems and has experience in a range of industries including transport, oil, manufacturing and the Department of Conservation. She launched her consulting career in 2011. In terms of her personality profile, Sarah is outgoing and has an inclusive style of communication developed after years of regularly attending Toastmasters meetings. Her clients describe her as facilitative; however, she can be direct and hold people accountable when necessary. Along with a sense of humour, she has an innate ability to define a problem and guide her clients to develop a solution that is written in their own language and meets their operational needs.
