From Fear to Friendship: The 30-Year Journey of an Interracial Women's Circle What does it really take for women across race, identity, and experience to move from awkward conversations to real friendship? In this episode, I talk with two people I deeply respect—Julie O'Mara and Dr. Sid Reel—about a women's circle I'm part of  that's been meeting for nearly 30 years. What started as a conference breakout session turned into something far more rare: a space where white women and women of color stayed in relationship through grief, anger, mistakes, growth, and joy. We talk about confidentiality and why it matters. About staying at the table when things get uncomfortable. About what happens when people don't feel alone anymore. And about the difference between talking about race and actually knowing people whose lives are shaped by it. This isn't theory. It's lived experience. And it's a reminder that real connection doesn't come from slogans or training slides—it comes from time, trust, and being willing to keep showing up. We share raw, transformative experiences that took us from initial fear and distrust to deep, meaningful friendships. The episode explores the group's origins, the critical role of confidentiality, and the hard truths they've confronted about race, privilege, and solidarity. You'll learn the challenges and rewards of having tough conversations about race and how these led to profound support and solidarity during life's toughest moments.   Timestamps & Key Segments: 00:00 Introduction and Podcast Overview 01:10 Meet the Guests: Julie O'Mara and Dr. Sid Real 04:45 The Women's Circle: Origins and Purpose 12:38 Confidentiality and Trust Building 20:02 Personal Stories and Experiences 27:54 Challenges and Learnings in DEI 35:50 Standing Up and Women's Circle Support 36:57 Building Comfort and Social Connections 38:26 Shared Experiences and Mutual Support 41:33 Assumptions and Learning Moments 54:00 Starting and Sustaining a Circle 01:01:12 Final Thoughts and Contact Information Guest Bio:Julie O'Mara is coauthor of the free Global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Benchmarks (GDEIB): Standards for Organizations Around the world along with Alan Richter, PhD, and Nene Molefi. The Tarot Diagnosis
Collective Effervescence & the Three of Cups: The Emotional Power of Shared Experiences

The Tarot Diagnosis

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 11, 2026 22:18

In this episode of The Tarot Diagnosis, I discuss an epiphany I had after pulling the Three of Cups. It led me to reflect on the feeling I have when I'm in the middle of a crowd at a concert. Or, back in the day, when I'd wait in line for hours to be front and center of the stage at the barricade. It was such a euphoric feeling, everyone sharing in excitement and joy at the same moment in time for the same reason. And then it hit me…the three of cups is collective effervescence. I explore the psychology behind collective effervescence and why shared experiences feel so much more intense than solitary ones. Research shows that in group settings, our nervous systems synchronize (so our heart rates align, attention focuses intensely, and emotions amplify). The Three of Cups just so happens to capture this perfectly because it marks the point in the Cups suit where emotion becomes a shared social experience, where our feelings spill out into the collective container and move through a group. I also talk about why this experience isn't necessarily universal because some people feel energized by crowds, while others feel depleted.I then turn toward the shadow side of collective effervescence: like when shared joy can actually become weaponized, when belonging becomes conditional, and when emotional highs replace healthy discernment. For example, social, religious, or spiritual groups that rely solely on emotional intensity can confuse euphoria with safety, truth, or moral superiority making it hard to question what's being expressed or leave the group entirely. In tarot terms, this is the Three of Cups reserved. Finally, I offer a reframe: tarot itself can act as a catalyst for collective effervescence, even when we're alone. Which, I know, may sound contradictory because I talk about how this experience is specific to shared socialization (hence the term “collective”) But when we shuffle the cards, despite engaging in a solitary act, it's not entirely isolated because we are often tapping into the collective unconscious. Tarot embodies shared symbolism, collective meaning, and centuries of human emotional investment. So, in that way, every reading becomes a sort of communal experience, even in the privacy of our own space. Which feels like a lovely reminder that even in solitude, we're participating in something deeply shared by the collective.Research Mentioned:https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17439760.2019.1689412https://sociologicalscience.com/download/vol-6/january/SocSci_v6_27to42.pdfhttps://d1wqtxts1xzle7.cloudfront.net/30621134/Buehler-libre.pdf?1391824300=&response-content-disposition=inline%3B+filename%3DThe_Twenty_first_century_Study_of_Collec.pdf&Expires=1767414020&Signature=QVl3sp8hBIw4IAWZMvUjReIHHUdhLD9atRDQxOESXJNMrhjjFh6K3vspnJD4Y31hwZdP8AvHeeOaGAzR7lyZz0-sl3lj13YUo9Rkjg24~24Khhy9HzGnrYgyt71ByUzRBO2SUYF37JAA6lji9dJ2QYJABEw~IJYDm6r8VX5R4SSEhcF82s1p3OBMFNizKjY6E50qJuqQL3S3vo8Q24YGnrFCcitUn~amfqPtI-CXV7jUi698jCFU71hX-iuJApC1hysJuHZZwdwskW2KE9Mc3r0p7eX0WZdBvCWxBEClQGNsU4KaTjxfdLc6MLqC2sKvl2rK-Fng0UddvqPbdWznvw__&Key-Pair-Id=APKAJLOHF5GGSLRBV4ZAhttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9473704/https://journalofsocialontology.org/index.php/jso/article/view/8732/9552

We explore themes of hope, the illusion of control, the reality of sin, and the necessity of dignity in relationships. Ayers also emphasizes the need for vulnerability and authenticity in faith, encouraging listeners to embrace their struggles and foster inclusive communities. Honesty about our struggles fosters a healthier community. Dignifying others is essential for building inclusive spaces. Wrestling with faith and doubt is a normal part of life. Cat & Cloud Coffee makes a mean breakfast burrito — and, of course, a great cup of java. But that's not the main reason Jared Truby founded the Santa Cruz, California, coffee shop.“I like creating things that people can feel connected to and authentic in,” Jared says. “What ended up spawning from that is just how can we create authenticity and a unique connection for not only the people who come in, but for the people who work together?”At Cat & Cloud, “authenticity” and “connection” aren't just buzzwords. They're the foundation of a business that strives to care for and develop its employees — all employees, full or part-time, get paid vacation, benefits, and autonomy grow into the roles that are right for them — as well as serve its community. It's less about running a coffee shop and more about being a leader. “One of our jobs as leaders is to show people that there is value outside of the workplace if you learn and dive into the things that we're trying to teach you,” Jared says. “And I think when it clicks, people start saying, ‘Oh, nice. Like, it doesn't suck to work here, and I'm actually becoming a better person.'”Listen in as Jared shares more about the origin of Cat & Cloud coffee, its mission, and the challenges and rewards of building a small business centered around growth and connection. –Cat & Cloud: https://catandcloud.com/–Infinitely Scalable Podcast: Helping entrepreneurs, creatives, and humans everywhere find freedom.

One of the things that I have come to thoroughly enjoy as a type of past time is the learning about the history of World War II in the Pacific theater. A book that I have been listening to recently is “Japanese Destroyer Captain” by Captain Tameichi Hara. It is amazing listening to give a version of things from the perspective of a Japanese naval commander who went through the Imperial Japanese Naval college at Etajima and then saw action across the war. Getting a sense of what that experience was like from his point of view very much helps to get a greater overall understanding of the war because after all, history is about perspective.I felt the same way about the book “D-Day through German Eyes.” Perspective switching is a vital skill and ability because it allows us to get outside of our own world view and take the position of others. My guest today on Experience by Design knows all about telling stories, and also all about the navy. Christian Lachel started his career in the US Navy in special warfare and special forces. But an injury curtailed that career and led him to attend the ArtCenter College of Design, where he also taught. His background in design, storytelling, and media and history eventually found him at the company BRC Imagination Arts, where he is now Chief Creative Officer. Christian has been involved in creating 5 USA Pavilion Exhibits at World Expos, which requires crafting what story to tell about the United States. This includes the USA Pavilion currently in Osaka, Japan. He also has worked with the Henry Ford Museum and the River Rouge plant, which if you know labor history has special meaning regarding the rise of unions and collective bargaining. We talk about how storytelling is about bringing together perspectives and capturing different points of view. He emphasizes the importance of deep listening and research with all stakeholders to make sure their voices are included. We also discuss how that story has to be distilled in a way that audiences will be entertained and engaged. Christian is focused on what we can create collectively as a community and world when we work together toward a common goal, and hope that this is what is communicated through his work. The importance and power of the experiences he helps to create is to provide that shared meaning which resonates individually and brings people together collectively. Christian Lachel LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christianlachel/BRC Imagination Arts: https://www.brcweb.com/USA Pavilion Osaka 2025: https://www.expo2025.or.jp/en/official-participant/united-states-of-america/
