How do we stay hopeful in the face of despair and disillusionment—especially when politics threaten to tear us in two? Kate speaks with Parker Palmer, a writer, teacher, and activist. As you’ll hear, he has gone through seasons of deep clinical depression, and has hard-won wisdom to share with us on how to survive, how to regain a sense of agency, how to remain hopeful despite it all. In this episode, Kate and Parker discuss: finding agency in the midst of depression and despair (including his trick of redefining achievement) why it is important to recalibrate our sense of reality—especially in the face of 24-hour news cycles and social media algorithms how a broken heart can either shatter or break open into a larger, more compassionate way of being So on a day like today when we all might be thinking about the state of our nation or the state of our world or the realities at stake for our families and friends (....or perhaps, more tempted to keep our head in the sand to just make it through Thanksgiving), might we pull up close and listen to what Parker has to teach us about how to keep our hearts soft and remain hopeful, still. Should Aly stop playing pickleball? Also, is this the best deal for a Thanksgiving meal? We talk about our football picks of the week, preview this weekend's new releases, and lots more!
Sara Eisen and David Faber began the hour with a fresh read on jobs using some alternative sources - before checking in on the tech trade with longtime investor Dan Niles, who says stocks will melt-up into Thanksgiving despite concerns over the AI trade. A key focus today? The health of the regional banks - as concerns rise around bad loans... Hear from one CEO in the group who says concerns are far overblown here, along with Evercore Vice Chairman Krishna Guha's take on the volatility. Also in focus: exclusive data from CNBC's All-America survey showing some concerning sentiment about the jobs market... Where things stand in Washington - and why the stoppage could last a lot longer... And a $300 trillion dollar mistake that's hitting crypto markets. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Buckle up, because this week's episode is a wild ride through chaos and couture. We've got a possible Thanksgiving travel nightmare thanks to a looming government shutdown, SKIMS launching faux fur panties (the bush is back, baby), and UPS saying “return to sender” by literally throwing packages away. Nicki Minaj might lose her $20M mansion, a beloved website is now blocked in Arizona, and we say RIP to legends Diane Keaton and D'Angelo. RHOP's Wendy Osefo got arrested, NBC News cut their diversity teams, and buying a new car now costs a casual $50K. America's running on delusion and iced coffee, and we're here to talk about it. Today's Headlines: We're now on day 16 of the government shutdown, and Republican leaders are hinting it could drag on until Thanksgiving — casually blaming holiday travel chaos while admitting they're not even thinking about reopening the government. Meanwhile, OMB Director Russell Vought says the administration plans to fire 10,000 federal workers, though a federal judge just ruled they can't do that during a shutdown. While public employees go unpaid, the administration is finding cash for others — promising a “clever and generous” $10 billion bailout for farmers hit by the trade war with China once the shutdown ends, and another $20 billion to prop up Argentina's crumbling economy. Priorities! At the Pentagon, dozens of journalists turned in their press badges rather than sign Pete Hegseth's “state media” pledge requiring them to only report what the Defense Department approves — a move even Fox wouldn't touch. Over at the Supreme Court, justices heard a major case that could gut the Voting Rights Act by striking down race-based map protections — potentially flipping a dozen Democratic House seats in the South right before the 2026 midterms. Meanwhile, an Ohio GOP congressman's office was found to have a flag featuring a swastika intertwined with the American flag visible on a Zoom call. He blamed it on “vandalism,” because apparently random Nazi décor just appears in people's offices now. And finally, the yacht formerly known as the Lady Ghislaine — once owned by Robert Maxwell (yes, Ghislaine's dad) and now Rupert Murdoch's ex-wife's — caught fire in D.C. yesterday. Officials say it was electrical. Okay then. We all want peace with others, especially family. At Thanksgiving, we avoid certain topics. We bite our tongues during arguments. We compromise our witness, don't we? In this section, Jesus walks in and says something shocking: "I have not come to bring peace, but a sword." He doubles down, too, saying His Gospel will divide father and son, mother and daughter. What could possibly be so important, so vital to our survival, that it would demand loyalty even greater than the love we have for our own family? Jesus is drawing a line in the sand and forcing us to ask where our true allegiance lies. The Rev. David Mumme, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Waterville, MN, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Matthew 10:26-42. To learn more about Trinity Lutheran, visit trinitywaterville.org. The Gospel of Matthew bridges Old and New Testaments, presenting Jesus as the promised Messiah who fulfills the Law we could never keep and establishes His kingdom of grace for all nations. Written by a tax collector transformed by pure grace, Matthew reveals Christ as the true Son of David and Emmanuel (God with us) who challenges us with the crushing demands of the Law in His Sermon on the Mount to the sweet comfort of the Gospel in His death and resurrection. From royal genealogy to glorious resurrection, this verse-by-verse study proclaims the One who conquered sin, death, and the devil for us, now delivering forgiveness, life, and salvation through Word and Sacrament as He remains with His church always, even to the end of the age. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. Bill opened the show by comparing Aaron Rodgers to LeBron James by saying that both aging stars are no longer worth the headaches they bring unless they are humbled. Bill then reacted to Lions head coach Dan Campbell saying that the NFL's league office intervened with the officiating crew on Sunday night and discussed if that's a big deal or not. Would You Rather was next as Bill chose between having Tua Tagovailoa or Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback, Missouri winning a national championship or the Bears winning a Super Bowl and celebrating Halloween or Thanksgiving. Hour two kicked off with former NFL head coach Herm Edwards joining the show to discuss if the Colts are legit, if referees officiate teams based on their record and the biggest key to success for coordinators becoming head coaches. Buy or Sell was next as Bill answered if Florida should fire Billy Napier this weekend regardless of result, if Tua has lost the locker room and if adults are allowed to sample ice cream flavors at the store. The show ended with Bill criticizing Tua for not taking accountability.

One Year Bible Podcast: Join Hunter and Heather Barnes on 'The Daily Radio Bible' for a daily 20-minute spiritual journey. Engage with scripture readings, heartfelt devotionals, and collective prayers that draw you into the heart of God's love. Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible, where together we journey through the Scriptures and discover the heart of God for our lives. In today's episode, Host Hunter leads us through readings from Nehemiah 13, Malachi 1–2, and Acts 4, exploring themes of faithfulness, boldness, and the transformative power of God's Spirit. As we witness dramatic moments like the shaking of the early church's meeting place and the call to live lives of generosity, selflessness, and hope, we're invited to let the Spirit shake things up in our own hearts—especially as we approach seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Join us as we pray for boldness, reflect on the meaning of true worship, and are reminded once more that every single person is deeply loved by God. Grab your Bible, settle in, and let's step into the story together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: There's a whole lot of shaking going on. Peter and John return to their community after being interrogated and threatened for boldly declaring the name of Jesus. These men, considered ordinary and untrained, stood before powerful religious leaders and testified to the truth of Christ resurrected. And after this confrontation, after choosing faithfulness over fear, they come back to their friends—and something remarkable happens: as they pray together, the whole place is shaken. They are filled again with the Holy Spirit and preach the word of God with boldness. What does this tell us? Wherever the Spirit of God is, things get stirred up—hearts are awakened, priorities are shifted, lives are refocused away from self and toward others. This is the story of the early church, but it's meant to be our story too. God hasn't stopped shaking things up. When we pray for boldness, for selflessness, for generosity, God answers. He fills us with the courage to embody the hope of Christ, just like he did with those first believers. As we look ahead to a new season—the holidays, filled with hopes, distractions, and busyness—it's time to invite God to shake things up in our own hearts. The message we carry is one of joy and peace: “Joy to the world, the Lord has come. Peace on earth, goodwill toward men. Emmanuel, God is with us.” These aren't just sentiments to be remembered in December—they're truths meant to be lived out, to become visible as we let God's Spirit work through us. Let's make this a season where we pray deeper, where we ask for boldness to declare that every single person is loved by God. May God's joy be our strength, his Spirit our guide, and may we become heralds of hope—proclaiming with our words and our lives that Jesus is risen, that he is present, and that his kingdom life is available to all. That's my prayer for my own soul, for my family, and for you. May God shake things up—in us, and through us. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen. Praise — A Means to Victory Text: Hebrews 13:10–15 ; 2 Chronicles 20 ; Acts 16 Theme: Praise and thanksgiving are not reactions — they are weapons of victory and doors into God's presence. Living in the Last Days The world hungers for comfort, not truth — but the church must stand firm in the Word. Amos 8:11 – “A famine… of hearing the Word of the Lord.” God doesn't need us, but we desperately need Him. Application: Stay rooted in Scripture amid cultural drift. Thanksgiving in Prayer – Philippians 4:6 “Let your requests be made known unto God — with thanksgiving.” Gratitude reminds God that we know He is the source. Posture check: Do we ask in fear or faith? Thanksgiving opens the door for God to move. “We're not stroking God's ego — we're acknowledging His hand in everything.” III. Praise: Our Continual Sacrifice – Hebrews 13:15 “Let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise.” Praise brings God into our moment; complaining pushes Him out. Daily praise > Sunday praise — Sunday should be overflow, not catch-up. Prophetic call: Start praising every day — and watch your life change. The Tabernacle of David Restored – Acts 15:16 & Psalm 22:3 God promised to rebuild David's tabernacle — the house of praise. David danced before the Lord, unashamed. Psalm 22:3: “God is enthroned in the praises of His people.” “When we praise, God brings His throne into our situation.” His throne means healing, provision, deliverance, and power. Application: Gentiles have been grafted in — we are the new worshiping people of God. Jehoshaphat's Victory – 2 Chronicles 20 Surrounded by enemies, Judah sought the Lord. God's word: “The battle is not yours, but God's.” Worshippers went before warriors — and praise won the battle. “They didn't need swords — they needed God's throne in their moment.” Praise confuses the enemy and positions believers for overflow. The Paradox of Praise Praise in pain defies logic but demonstrates faith. David worshiped after loss; Noah endured through faith. Real faith acts — it endures and praises through the storm. Application: When the world says “complain,” heaven says “praise.” VII. Paul and Silas – Praise in the Prison (Acts 16:16–34) Beaten and chained, they prayed and sang hymns at midnight. Their praise reached heaven — and God shook the prison. “When their praise caught God's ear, He said, ‘Bring My throne down where the sewage is.'” Chains broke, doors opened, and salvation came. Lesson: Praise breaks bondage and draws others to Christ. VIII. Call to Worship and Renewal Praise brings heaven into every situation. Angels move on behalf of those who fear and thank God. Stop fretting — start praising. “Mix thanksgiving with your requests. Invite His throne into your situation — that's how victory comes.” Key Takeaway: Praise is not a reaction to victory — it's the means to it. When you praise, God steps in with His throne, and everything changes
Stephen Carter and Shannon Phillips carve into the political topics that should have dominated Thanksgiving dinner - if they were brought up at all. How do you get people to pay attention to municipal politics? What did the teachers and the government need from families gathering over the weekend? And will Carter double-down on his prediction for the Forever Canadian campaign like he doubled down on those mashed potatoes? Guest: Blue Jays outfielder Nathan Lukes All appears to be pretty bleak in Blue Jays land as they head north and west to Seattle trailing the best-of-seven American League Championship Series two games to none. The complete offensive collapse against the Mariners was wholly unexpected, especially given that the Jays had scored 34 runs over their four-game ALDS win against the New York Yankees and Seattle seemed ripe for the picking, coming off an exhausting and emotional 15-inning winner-take-all Game 5 in their ALDS against the Detroit Tigers. That game finished less than 72 hours before the M's put the finishing touches on their 10-3 Thanksgiving blowout of the Blue Jays. But as bleak as it is, the Jays seem to have overcome the odds time and time again this year and Deep Left Field will continue to be with them every step of the way. In today's playoff bonus episode, we speak to Nathan Lukes, who had 50% of the Jays' hits in Monday's loss, including RBI singles in both the first and second innings. The Jays only had one hit after the second inning - a Lukes single, his third hit of the game. Lukes was playing with a badly bruised right knee after fouling a ball off himself in Game 1. And, of course, we open the mailbag at deepleftfield@thestar.ca to hear your thoughts on the loss, some clinging to optimism, some resigned to defeat, some utterly off the wall.
This isn't just a ghost story — it's a real-life nightmare that shattered a family. For months, their father spoke of a dark shadow lingering in the corner of his bedroom, whispering voices that no one else could hear. The family chalked it up to stress, exhaustion, or a failing mind. But on Thanksgiving night, his despair reached a breaking point. The tragedy should have ended there. Instead, the haunting truly began. Weeks after his death, the rest of the family began to see the same black figure their father had described. Strange recordings appeared on their phones — chilling whispers, including a voice saying “Get out” and muttering about their mother. At his daughter's home miles away, lights were ripped out of the ceiling and a heavy fixture nearly fell on her head. In the room where their father died, the air feels oppressively heavy, almost unbreathable, and the smell never left — even after the carpet was replaced and the walls were painted. A local spiritualist who visited the house said there was “something evil here… something that took your father from you.” This is the kind of haunting that leaves scars — and questions that no one can answer. #TrueGhostStory #RealHaunting #DarkEntity #ShadowPeople #EvilPresence #ParanormalEvidence #FamilyHaunting #VoicesInTheDark #SuicideAndTheSupernatural #GetOutEVP #HauntedHouseTragedy #UnexplainedPhenomena Love real ghost stories? Canada and the island of Saint Lucia celebrate a Thanksgiving holiday in October. Liberia sets aside a day for giving thanks at the beginning of November, while the US and Australia mark the annual holiday at the end of the month. Other countries, including the United Kingdom, Brazil, Rwanda, and the Philippines, have unofficial days to foster gratitude. There’s something powerful about a nation collectively expressing gratitude. It’s a picture we see when King David assembled the nation of Israel to give thanks to God for His presence, protection, and promises. The celebration marked the return of the “ark of God” (1 Chronicles 16:1). The people rejoiced that the ark, a symbol of God’s presence with them, was in Jerusalem. As David led Israel in praise, he reminded them of God’s protection as the nation conquered the land of Canaan (vv.18-22) and celebrated God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises (v. 15). If you celebrate a Thanksgiving holiday with friends and family, consider making it a gratitude gathering and reflecting together on the ways you’ve experienced God’s presence, protection, and promises over the past year. Whether or not you live in a country that officially celebrates Thanksgiving, each of us can take time to express gratitude to the “Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever” (v. 34).
