Kent McGowen grew up in Texas in a good family with a father in the oil business and a brother who became a cop — served honorably in the United States Air Force became a Houston police officer and eventually became a sheriff's deputy in Harris County. In August 1992 while executing a felony warrant as part of a larger weapons operation the situation escalated when the woman he was there to arrest pulled a gun on him. He warned her repeatedly to drop the weapon before firing in what he says was an act of self defense. We are continuing this week's theme of guarding the gate and the power of discernment. Today, I am breaking down the massive difference between being "nice" and being discerning, and why you actually need to start making things awkward to protect your family's peace. I am getting real about my own past of people-pleasing, plus we have a hilarious mid-podcast interruption when my son literally runs for his life from a massive locust invasion in our yard! Key Topics Discussed: Manifesting Reality: I start with a reminder that what you believe in your heart and think in your mind will eventually become your physical reality. What you repeatedly do becomes an unconscious activity ingrained in your subconscious mind. Nice vs. Discerning: The world tells you to say "yes" to keep the peace and to tolerate absolutely anything just to be liked. I explain why a man without boundaries isn't generous—he is totally unguarded. Remember: discernment decides what gets in, but boundaries decide what stays out. Make It Awkward: I open up about my own past of saying yes to everything because I didn't want to hurt feelings. But here is the truth: my family's peace, freedom, and structure are the most important things to me outside of God. If someone tries to disrupt that, hell yeah, I am going to make it awkward! Leadership & Ecosystems: If you tolerate everything just to be liked in your business, you will completely destroy your ecosystem. Your team will stop trusting your judgment, they will lose respect for you, and your ship will eventually sink. The Locust Invasion: A hilarious, real-time moment where I have to pause my train of thought because my son comes sprinting inside. What we thought was a bee turned out to be massive locusts, proving we literally needed to go outside and set some boundaries with the bugs! The Week Ahead: Instead of just talking philosophy, tomorrow we are getting tactical.
