“Content is still important, but content is much more of a commodity. So the premise has to be that we've got to create something…It has to include conversation, it has to include community, it has to include the idea that there's going to be something that's analog that happens.”In this week's episode of The Speaker Lab, Grant Baldwin chats with Brad Lomenick about what truly makes speakers memorable. Brad's big takeaway is that being great to work with matters even more than being the most dynamic person on stage.Brad shares that self-awareness is key: know your strengths, get feedback, and focus on the type of events where you shine. He also highlights the importance of personal touches like connecting with organizers, knowing your audience, and showing genuine kindness.Ultimately, it's the offstage moments and relationships you build that lead to lasting success. Nici shares the turning point that led her from academia to building a seven-figure company around AI and why she believes women need to engage with it now to stay competitive. She explains how to think of AI as a “blank slate intern” that can be trained to support your goals, why ethical use matters, and how keeping human values at the center ensures these tools work for you rather than the other way around. This conversation invites listeners to see AI not as a shortcut, but as a responsibility and an opportunity to shape the future of work in ways that are inclusive and sustainable. How small business owners can unlock hidden profits by optimizing financial levers and making smarter money decisions. Show Notes Page: https://www.thehowofbusiness.com/579-business-poll-results/ Small business owners often focus on chasing revenue, but revenue does not always equal profit. In this episode, Henry Lopez is joined by Jamie Trull, CPA, financial literacy coach, and profit strategist, to discuss the essential profit levers that can transform a struggling business into a thriving one. Jamie shares her journey from corporate auditor at Ernst & Young and finance leader at Coca-Cola Enterprises to becoming a champion for women-owned small businesses. After leaving corporate life, she pivoted from one-on-one client work to scalable education programs and group coaching. Her mission is clear: help entrepreneurs understand their numbers and build profitable, sustainable businesses. Throughout the discussion, Jamie emphasizes that profit is simply the result of revenue minus expenses, but too many entrepreneurs focus on volume instead of fixing underlying financial inefficiencies. She breaks down profit levers such as price, average transaction value, and volume, showing why a simple 2% price increase can be more powerful than chasing dozens of new clients. Henry and Jamie also explore strategies for managing unprofitable products, such as re-pricing, reducing costs, and communicating value to customers when raising prices. They highlight how differentiation and branding help small businesses avoid competing on price alone. Debt strategy is another key theme. Jamie stresses that debt can be an effective tool when used wisely for investments and expansion, but warns against using it as a crutch to cover poor financial management. She compares debt to a snowball that can roll out of control if entrepreneurs aren't intentional about their borrowing. “Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity. Don't confuse the two.” – Jamie Trull Jamie also previews her upcoming book, Hidden Profit, releasing in October 2025, which offers actionable financial strategies for businesses scaling from $50,000 to $500,000 in revenue. This episode is a must-listen for aspiring and existing micro-business owners who want to improve profitability, strengthen financial foundations, and make smarter decisions about growth and debt. Jamie Trull is a CPA, financial literacy coach, and profit strategist who left a successful corporate finance career at Coca-Cola to help women-owned businesses take control of their money. Through online courses, group coaching, and now her new book Hidden Profit, Jamie empowers small business owners with the tools and confidence to improve profitability and achieve financial freedom. This episode is hosted by Henry Lopez. The How of Business podcast focuses on helping you start, run, grow and exit your small business. Chris Holman welcomes back Kim Bode, Dog rescuer, community advocate, and proud Michigan business owner, 8THIRTY FOUR Integrated Communications, Grand Rapids, MI. Welcome back Kim, the fellowship you shared about a couple times in the past year is back for a second, tell us about it? SBAM designed the Women's Entrepreneurial Fellowship specifically for second-stage businesses—why is this growth stage such a critical point for women entrepreneurs? Access to capital remains a major barrier, with women receiving significantly smaller loans and less venture funding—how does the fellowship help bridge that gap? The program emphasizes customized mentorship and peer networking. What measurable impacts did you see from the first cohort, and how will those lessons shape this next one? Michigan women own over 44% of small businesses—how does the fellowship leverage SBAM's statewide network to amplify their economic impact? For companies generating $500,000–$1 million in revenue, what key challenges are you seeing most often, and how does the fellowship address them differently than traditional programs? How can they apply? » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/ The Small Business Association of Michigan Expands Statewide Program for Second-stage Women-owned Businesses The Women's Entrepreneurial Fellowship opens applications for a fall cohort to address resources, support, and funding gaps for Michigan women entrepreneurs. The Small Business Association of Michigan, through the SBAM Foundation, is accepting applications for the second cohort of the Women's Entrepreneurial Fellowship (WEF), the state's only comprehensive program designed specifically for women-owned businesses that have moved beyond the startup phase. Following the success of its inaugural class, the program will expand to serve 15 participants, with applications due mid-September and programming beginning late fall. "Michigan women entrepreneurs bring bold ideas and unstoppable determination, but too often they lack access to the mentorship and networks that can accelerate their success," said Amy Rencher, Senior Vice President, Small Business & Talent at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). "This unique fellowship program closes that gap, fueling connections with experienced leaders who can open doors, share hard-earned wisdom, and help turn vision into thriving businesses that strengthen our communities and our economy." The fellowship addresses documented disparities that create significant economic opportunity gaps. According to the Wells Fargo 2025 Impact of Women-Owned Businesses Report, if women-owned businesses achieved the same average revenue as men-owned businesses, the U.S. economy would see an additional $10.2 trillion in revenue annually. In Michigan, women own 44.2% of small businesses—902,131 enterprises—yet they receive loans 50% smaller than their male counterparts. Only 2.3% of venture capital reaches women-led firms, while nearly 1 in 3 female entrepreneurs report experiencing sexism as business owners.

Click here now to access the tool > ‍ How to Raise Your Visibility on LinkedIn Without Feeling Loud or Pushy For many business owners, LinkedIn can feel overwhelming. But it can also be one of the most powerful places to connect with your dream clients and potential collaborators and grow. ‍ It's a place where thoughtful voices are heard and real opportunities can take root. ‍ So this week on The Brilliant Book Festival, I was delighted to be joined by Louise Brogan, author of Raise Your Visibility on LinkedIn. ‍ Her approach is refreshingly different: no cold messages, no forcing yourself into someone else's mould, just clear, consistent steps that help you build a presence people trust. ‍ Louise shows us that visibility isn't about being the loudest. It's about being the one who shows up with clarity, humanity, and the quiet confidence to let your expertise speak for itself. ‍‍ Prefer to WATCH instead of read? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72DfGZtzUws ‍ ‍ “The people who decide you're the expert are the people watching you show up.” – Louise Brogan ‍ Why Visibility Matters For many introverted entrepreneurs, the idea of “getting visible” online can feel daunting.  ‍ Louise reminds us: visibility doesn't mean becoming someone you're not. It means showing up consistently in a way that feels natural to you, so that when potential clients need your expertise, they already trust you. ‍ LinkedIn works because: ‍ People on the platform have resources to spend. Often corporate budgets or personal income. Most people never post. They're silent observers (“hidden buyers”) waiting for the right voice to resonate.. You need to be the clearest. ‍ You don't need to be the loudest. You need to be the clearest. ‍ As Louise puts it, showing up regularly to share insights creates an ecosystem where others decide you are the expert. ‍ ‍ Becoming Seen as an Expert One of the biggest barriers to posting on LinkedIn is the feeling of: “Who am I to say this?” Louise gently reframes this. You don't need to declare yourself “the top expert in the world.” You simply need to answer the kinds of questions your dream clients are already asking. Visibility isn't about grandeur—it's about consistency. If you regularly share your perspective, your network begins to associate you with your area of expertise. Even better, others amplify you by engaging, commenting, or tagging you in conversations. As Louise explained: “The people who decide you're the expert are the people watching you show up.” ‍ The metaphor here is a pair of rowers in a boat. If both row on the same side, you go in circles. But when you learn to pull in sync from opposite sides, you glide forward faster and straighter than you ever could alone. ‍ ‍ “One thoughtful conversation outweighs a hundred copy-paste messages. LinkedIn is about networking, not spamming.” – Louise Brogan ‍ A Favourite Story: Selling Art on LinkedIn Louise shared the story of an artist who initially thought LinkedIn wasn't “for her.” Once she began posting about her work, not only did she start selling to businesses (who wanted art for their offices), but she was also featured in Vogue and went on to collaborate with a furniture designer. ‍ Why? Because LinkedIn isn't about industries—it's about people. And people buy from people they connect with. ‍ ‍ The Quiet Power of Consistency The heart of Louise's message is that LinkedIn works when you build a trusted rhythm of presence. Not through noise. Not through hacks. But by showing up in a way that feels true. If you've ever felt hesitant about LinkedIn, let Louise's story reassure you: visibility can be both strategic and soulful. You don't have to shout. You simply need to resonate, consistently. ‍ ‍ Final Thought to Reflect On What could shift for you if you used LinkedIn as a space for building steady, human connections? ‍ Want to explore what this could look like for you? ‍Learn more about the ways you can work with Melitta Campbell to uncover your Value Sweet Spot to market, sell and grow your business confidently, and always on your terms.
