“Just because you make the final decision does not mean you were the cause.” — Lora Cheadle “Healing” gets thrown around a lot—but in real life it's messy, non-linear, and humbling. In this intimate conversation, Lora and healer/mentor Wendi (formerly of the Chopra Center; now on the Lee Harris team) unpack what healing actually looks like after infidelity, health crises, and identity rupture—and why your “opening” matters more than any timeline. If you've ever wondered, Why don't I feel better yet? Am I doing this wrong?—this episode is for you. Lora and Wendi reveal the lived truth of recovery: three steps forward, two back; grief cycling; learning to receive; and choosing yourself even when others don't approve. You'll hear how meditation created space beyond the mind, why the body never lies, how community can “hold the frequency” when you can't, and the liberating shift from I am my story to I write my story. Expect practical reframes you can use today—especially if you're a high-achieving woman who's tired of doing it all alone. Top 3 Takeaways Healing is non-linear (and normal). Think Chutes & Ladders, not a straight line. You'll revisit layers like grief, anger, and acceptance—and that doesn't mean you're failing. Humility opens the door. Letting go of the “if I do everything right, bad things won't happen” myth creates room for curiosity, compassion, and real change. You're allowed to choose you. Boundaries, receiving support, and rewriting the narrative are acts of power. Your agency—not other people's opinions—defines your direction. Episode Highlights The “opening”: the moment you realize you can author a different story than the one you were handed. From people-pleasing to permission: upsetting others vs. honoring your inner yes. Mind-Body-Spirit integration: why meditation quiets the narrative so the body's intelligence can be heard. Community as medicine: when you can't hold the frequency, let safe containers hold it for you. Identity shifts: you are not your past roles (spouse, fixer, PTA star, marathoner); you are the one choosing what's next. Resources Mentioned Group meditation & mantra practice (Chopra Center origins) Lee Harris retreats/“Soul Magic” weekends Nature as regulation (beach, trees, grounding) A Course in Miracles prompt: “Am I willing to see this differently?” About Wendi With contagious joy and heart, all that Wendi Cohen offers is with the intention of healthy change. She has been a dynamic and instrumental force helping people from all over the world as an educator and mentor in the field of spirituality and wellness. Highly regarded for her many years at the Chopra Center for Wellbeing, she managed and facilitated their signature program, Perfect Health. Working with Dr. Deepak Chopra and being involved with cutting edge research in meditation and Ayurveda there, Wendi has been up close and personal with the brightest minds in the wellness industry. Now working with Lee Harris Energy, she is the Director of Studio Operations and a producer who uses her creative prowess, intuition and vision to support transformational work. What makes her special in this field, is that she found meditation and mindfulness on her own path to healing after being diagnosed with a rare and chronic illness in 2003. Her insatiable curiosity and ability to think outside of the box led her to looking at integrative approaches. That is when she had profound shifts in her health and also fell in love with meditation. As a result of her journey, Wendi has a deep capacity to understand the many challenges people face when looking at healing and transformation. She is also a board certified Integrative NLP Practitioner and trained in Authentic Communication. Being of service is when Wendi is the happiest - supporting people so they feel more peaceful, clear, and grounded, experiencing more love and inspiration in their lives is what lights her up. Her mantra is "follow the fun" and that is EXACTLY what she hopes to inspire in others. The Humility of Healing..... By Wendi Cohen Healing is often a misunderstood journey that reveals lessons in humility and the chance for deep learning, uncovering aspects of ourselves, if and only if, we are willing to look at them. By allowing and receiving, staying open and getting creative, thinking with our hearts while feeling our bodies, there can be some profound shifts in how we experience the challenge - whether it is physical, emotional or heart based. In my case, it was learning to navigate a new 'normal' after a life-changing diagnosis that rocked my world. My path has been messy while stunningly beautiful, scary and empowering - filled with moments I'd never ever want to revisit AND also so many moments of being the recipient of so much love and generosity, from unexpected places. When we have a better understanding that healing isn't necessarily linear - that it can be like a game of chutes and ladders or riding a roller coaster that takes your breath away, heart opening and heart breaking - but with the infusion of creativity, receptivity, a sense of humor and beginning new each day, it can become less jarring. Now twenty years later, to have had the good fortune to learn and then work with some of the most extraordinary visionaries, teachers, healers, and with my clients, I am truly humbled by it all - the good, the challenging and what has yet to come. Favorite Quote “Healing isn't something you do once and finish. It's the willingness to meet yourself again and again—with humility, curiosity, and love.” — Wendi

In this episode of The WorkWell Podcast™, Jen Fisher speaks with Zach Mercurio, author of "The Power of Mattering: How Leaders Can Create a Culture of Significance." Despite billions invested in engagement programs and wellbeing initiatives, employees are more disengaged than ever—and the problem isn't what most leaders think. This conversation reveals why mattering can't be addressed through programs and perks, and what leaders must do differently at the interaction level to help people feel truly seen, valued, and significant.Episode Highlights:Why engagement is at its lowest point in a decade despite $2 billion invested in programsThe difference between mattering, belonging, and inclusion—and why mattering is what's missingHow we've lost the skills to care for each other after 25 years of digital communicationThe "sprinkler issues" that silently kill motivation and create learned helplessnessWhy high performers and frontline workers are most at risk of feeling invisibleThe three practices that help people feel significant: noticing, affirming, and showing they're neededWhy you can't give effective feedback to someone who doesn't first feel that they matter to youHow showing others they matter actually regenerates your own sense of significanceQuotable Moment"You don't show people that they matter in spite of their low performance. Interviewee: Erick Hung, MD, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Associate Dean for Students, University of California San Francisco School of Medicine Interviewer: Lisa Meeks, PhD, MA, Guest Editor, Academic Medicine Supplement on Disability Inclusion in Undergraduate Medical Education Description: In this episode of Stories Behind the Science, Dr. Lisa Meeks talks with Dr. Erick Hung (UCSF) about his paper, “Promoting Disability Inclusion Through an Expanded Conceptual Framework of the Learning Environment,” part of the Academic Medicine supplement on Disability Inclusion in UME. Their conversation explores how a single student story at UCSF sparked a full-scale rethinking of what it means to create an equitable learning environment. Dr. Hung walks us through the journey—from a campus task force to a conceptual framework that now guides systemic change nationwide. Together, they unpack the six domains of the learning environment, including a new and critical addition: the societal layer, which recognizes how broader cultural forces shape belonging, access, and success. The discussion touches on mentorship, student advocacy, technical standards reform, and what it means to move beyond compliance toward culture change. Dr. Hung also reflects on humility in leadership, the importance of systems thinking, and how conceptual frameworks become living roadmaps for equity. Listeners will come away with practical takeaways for schools and leaders—build peer networks, re-evaluate policies through an inclusion lens, and invite students into the co-creation of change. On average we breathe in around 20,000 times a day, but for the most part, it happens automatically. We don't think about it. Despite that our breath and the way we breathe can have a huge impact on our mental and physical wellbeing. Think about it, if you're dealing with a difficult situation what do you do? Stop and take breath. But there's soo much more to it than that. Art of Living is a global leader in meditation and breathwork. It teaches the skills across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. Episode SummaryThis episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times is about one of the most important and misunderstood challenges in business today, how to build workplaces where people truly thrive.Host Chris Schembra welcomes Mark Rix, Group Managing Director of Wellbeing at Work, for an unfiltered conversation on belonging, resilience, and the human side of leadership. What makes this episode powerful isn't just the frameworks and research Mark shares; it's the raw, unexpected personal story that shaped his entire mission. At 18 years old, Mark found himself alone in South Africa's gold mines, working one and a half kilometers underground among hundreds of men who didn't speak his language. In an early and unforgettable moment, he was literally punched in the face for unknowingly saying something offensive in Afrikaans, a humiliating and dangerous misunderstanding that forced him to confront the difference between “blending in” and truly belonging. It also sparked a lifelong obsession with empathy, psychological safety, and how humans treat one another at work.Fast forward to today, and Mark leads a global movement to help organizations move wellbeing from a “nice-to-have” perk to a board-level strategy that drives engagement, innovation, and bottom-line results. His organization hosts summits on six continents, gathering thousands of leaders to explore the future of mental, social, and emotional wellbeing at work.Throughout the conversation, Chris and Mark explore:Why the next era of corporate wellbeing will be about social health — helping employees feel seen, safe, and connected. How to equip managers (most of whom were promoted without training) to coach with empathy and curiosity instead of simply direct or command. The role of shared language in creating psychological safety, and why your team's inside jokes, acronyms, and short codes matter more than you think. Why leaders don't have to rewrite every policy or undo every mandate; often, culture change begins by simply changing how you show up in the next conversation. How investing in employee wellbeing isn't just ethical but deeply strategic, the highest-performing companies in the world are proving that people-first drives profit. This episode is as practical as it is inspiring. It reminds leaders that while technology and AI will keep reshaping the future of work, human connection remains our greatest competitive advantage. If you've been struggling with disengagement, low morale, or the exhaustion of leading through uncertainty, this conversation will give you both a fresh perspective and simple actions to start right away, like carving out time to talk, listen, and ask better questions.Above all, it's a reminder that resilience and thriving cultures start with a choice: to lead with empathy and authenticity, one conversation at a time. 10 Memorable Quotes“You can blend but not belong. To bond, you have to give something of yourself.” — Mark Rix “Trust is built before it's tested. If your people don't feel safe, they won't speak up when it matters.” — Chris Schembra “I realized after being punched that day — this is not how work should be. No one should feel unsafe simply trying to belong.” — Mark Rix “A shared language can literally save lives underground. In business, it can save culture.” — Chris Schembra “Most managers are promoted without the skills — or the mindset — to coach. And it's costing engagement.” — Mark Rix “Empathy is listening to understand, then using that data to act differently tomorrow.” — Chris Schembra “Wellbeing isn't fluffy. Companies investing in their people outperform the market.” — Mark Rix “You don't have to change the policy to change the culture. Start by changing you.” — Chris Schembra “Connection is still our greatest competitive advantage — AI can enhance it but never replace it.” — Mark Rix “It doesn't matter how hard you get punched; it's about how well you get back up and keep leading with heart.” — Chris Schembra 10 Key TakeawaysBonding > Blending — True belonging comes when people feel safe to bring their full selves, not just adapt to fit in. Shared Language Matters — Developing clear, common language within teams builds trust and prevents miscommunication in high-stakes environments. Empathy Is Action-Oriented — It's not enough to “feel for” others; leaders must use what they learn to lead differently. Managers Need Coaching Skills — Over half of managers aren't prepared to lead; training them as coaches is one of the fastest ways to improve culture and engagement. Human Connection Fuels ROI — The best-performing companies on the stock market are investing heavily in employee wellbeing. Don't Wait for Policy — Leaders can start culture change simply by slowing down, listening, and showing genuine interest. Social Wellbeing Is the New Frontier — Loneliness is an epidemic; companies must look beyond physical and mental health to build deep social connection. Technology Is a Tool, Not a Replacement — AI and data can measure and enhance wellbeing strategies but will never replace face-to-face connection. Your Personal Story Shapes Leadership — Early, even painful experiences can become catalysts for empathy-driven leadership. Resilience Is Built, Not Bought — Being “punched” — literally or figuratively — can teach leaders how to bounce back and guide others through adversity.

What if the key to motivation and well-being isn't finding your purpose, but first believing you're worthy of having one? Zach Mercurio returns to The Leadership Project with a powerful insight: “It is almost impossible for anything to matter to someone who doesn't first believe that they matter.” He explains why many self-help books and engagement programs fall short — because they overlook the human need to matter and feel significant to others. In his new book The Power of Mattering, Zach reveals how feeling seen, valued, and needed drives our sense of purpose. When we feel we matter, we gain the confidence to add value — creating a cycle where feeling valued leads to contributing more. Yet in today's rushed, digital world, our ability to connect deeply has faded. As Zach says, “Hurry and care cannot coexist.”The solution lies in three simple habits: noticing others, affirming their impact, and needing them. These small acts cost nothing but can transform how people experience their worth. Zach challenges leaders to ask, “When you feel that you matter to me, what am I doing?” — and to do more of it. Because when people feel they matter, they do things that matter.

What if the pursuit of happiness is NOT the path to greater life satisfaction? What if being more productive and getting more done isn't actually the way to get ahead? In this episode, I'm revisiting my conversation with author Oliver Burkeman about some of the ways in which we might want to re-examine our relationship to goals, happiness, and the things that are most important to us.This is sometimes a bit painful. because so much of it has to do with confronting some of the hard limits that we like to pretend don't exist. But, as you'll hear, there is ultimately a profound relief and freedom to be found in facing finitude. Key TakeawaysTry to find satisfaction in the journey toward your goals, rather than postponing fulfillment until they are achieved.Cultivating your ability to be present to everyday, even mundane, moments can lead to a deeper appreciation of life as it unfolds.Understand that every choice has its consequences, and it's impossible to avoid negative outcomes entirely. Some of the most meaningful experiences in life are not the result of meticulous planning or pursuit but unexpected and unplanned.Being present is a skill that can be practiced in everyday situations like waiting in line or working in the office–and not just on the meditation cushion or yoga mat.Mentioned in this EpisodeUpcoming Live Events for Meditations for MortalsThe Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking4,000 Weeks: Time Management for Mortals50K Mile Tune-up Listening Guide and Workbook Interested in having Monica present at your next live or virtual event? "Joy is the experience of contentment, gratitude, and meaning, regardless of our external circumstance. Joy is not simply feeling happy. Joy encompasses quality of life and the ability to contribute to the world with a sense of meaning and purpose . . . Joy, by definition, cannot be the goal." —Dr. Kerry Burnight, author of Joyspan: The Art and Science of Thriving in Life's Second Half A mindset shift. A lifestyle choice. Rather than 'choosing joy' a concept that is vast in its meaning as what brings one person joy will be different from another's, it is rather knowing how to cultivate joy. What we choose are the ways to bring more joy into our life. What awesome news to discover that this is a choice we each have the opportunity to make, and in so doing, we welcome more quality into our life today and each day moving forward, as well as a longer life to savor. Gerontologist Dr. Kerry Burnight defines the term joyspan as how many years you enjoy living. "The experience of psychological well-being and satisfaction in longevity." In order to lengthen our joyspan, we need to know how to cultivate joy, and where to find it. The good news is, similar to contentment, we possess the capabilities within ourselves. We now just need to choose to put them to work. Listen to the full episode, and find the detailed Show Notes here on The Simply Luxurious Life blog - https://thesimplyluxuriouslife.com/podcast411
