Please share how this podcast is affecting your mental well-being. Please also know that we have a course called the "14 Days To Mental Health Wellness" Type this is your search bar. pensight.com/x/winoverdepressionDepression transforms your mind into a battlefield where worry, stress, and even paranoia can take root and flourish. After hosting 80 episodes over three years, I've learned that understanding this connection is crucial to breaking free from depression's grip. When you're diagnosed with chronic depression, your brain chemistry physically changes. The lack of serotonin doesn't just cause sadness—it creates a cascade of worry that can feel impossible to escape. You find yourself caught between accepting your diagnosis and dealing with treatment challenges. But there's hope in taking proactive, daily steps to reclaim control. The most powerful weapons against depression are surprisingly simple: that morning shower that energizes you, 15 minutes of sunlight that boosts your endorphins, 10-15 minutes of daily movement, and accomplishing just two small tasks each day. These aren't just feel-good suggestions—they're evidence-based strategies that directly combat depression at its source. Breaking large, overwhelming tasks into 25-minute segments makes the impossible suddenly manageable.I practice what I share. Just last week, I struggled with heightened depression symptoms after losing a friend. The techniques I'm sharing pulled me through, as they have countless times before. Depression isn't something we cure—it's something we manage daily with consistent effort and compassion toward ourselves. If you're listening in the darkness wondering if life is worth continuing, please know that giving up is never an option. Suicide transfers pain rather than eliminating it. Stay in this fight—if not for yourself right now, then for those who love you. Tomorrow brings new possibilities. Listen back to previous episodes for more strategies, connect with us on social media, and consider supporting our mission to reduce suicide rates with an $80 donation to mark our 80th episode. Will you succeed in reaching your next big goal? Only time will tell. Because success (or failure) generally comes at the end of the process. Except that every success or failure is actually made up of countless smaller successes or failures that happened along the way. And paying more attention to those can save us a lot of frustration and disappointment. In this episode, I'm borrowing a powerful concept from the world of business that can help you notch more wins, build confidence, and feel more in control of your progress—whatever you're working toward.Key TakeawaysLagging indicators reflect the results of your actions—but only after the fact.Leading indicators are the consistent, controllable actions that move you toward your goal. They help you stay engaged with the process, even when the payoff is weeks or months away. When you define progress by your actions, you create more opportunities for wins—even before the results show up.Clarifying what your outcome is meant to make possible helps sustain motivation—and shapes smarter action plans. If progress is elusive, look upstream. Back in 2017, I was working at BBC Health News Online when I came across an article about a lady who had launched a clothing range specifically for women with type 1 diabetes, designed to help them manage the condition with strategically placed holes for injecting or reaching devices. Its creator Natalie Balmain had the idea following her own diagnosis at the age of 20. Many years and many further creative ideas later, Natalie joins me as today's guest.Whether it's fashion design, hosting Insulet's Typecast podcast, winning reality TV shows as a would-be politician, or working in corporate communications, Natalie is a master adapter, but also a crusader. In this episode we talk about how type 1 diabetes gave Natalie the confidence she never had, learning to let her guard down and build community, and how she manages her ADHD alongside the many demands of type 1 diabetes. Today, I'm kicking off something a little different on the show — a mini series exploring the intersection of positive psychology and travel. If you've ever come home from a trip feeling more connected, more curious, more yourself — there's actually science behind that. And over the past year, I've been studying it deeply through my master's at Penn — not just as a travel professional, but as a human who believes that travel can be truly transformative. To launch this series, I'm so honored to welcome one of my mentors and dear friends, Leona Brandwene. Leona is the Associate Director of Education at the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania, where she helps lead the renowned MAPP program. She's also a master teacher, a coach, a mom, and someone who lives and breathes this work in such an authentic and inspiring way. In this conversation, we explain the basics of positive psychology. And then we explore how travel sparks awe, builds agency, strengthens relationships, and helps us find deeper meaning. If you've ever felt that your best self shows up on the road, this episode will give you language, insight, and maybe even a few ideas to bring that feeling into everyday life. Let's dive in. Text Monique directly! Share thoughts, feels or feedback! In this week's episode, Monique tackles the complex relationship between risk and ambition, especially for women of color. Through compelling stories she illustrates the emotional turmoil that can accompany the pursuit of dreams and the importance of acknowledging and processing those feelings. She also emphasizes the power of self-awareness and creativity in overcoming fear and finding clarity in uncertain times. Join in to discover how to redefine your understanding of risk and unlock your true potential. GEMS DROPPED“We will use the past to try to predict the future. Right. Because this is the thing with the women that I work with, they're not just saying, ‘well, I'm scared of taking risks, so I don't even consider it'. You keep approaching the idea of taking those risks, but it's kind of torturing you because you keep approaching it, and then you keep hitting a wall. Everything feels too scary and so you're like, well, let me kind of think through my past–right? So there's this formula, and it feels like an airtight formula, and that's where we kind of get trapped, because if one or two of those variables feel off, you're like ‘ooh, the risk of failure is now high'. That automatically shuts us down.”“Where do you have space to actually stop and feel? You typically don't. And things are often happening fast. So you're trying to react, you're trying to think. You haven't gotten yourself any space, any room to feel what you're actually feeling. And that is what's keeping you trapped in that merry go round. There's no creativity available to you in that space because you're just trapped in cyclical, fear based thinking.”“I challenge you, if you're sitting with this kind of indecision, this fear around risk and this story, to take a moment and see if you can, which I know you can, embrace the belief that I am someone who takes incredible risk and finds success. I am the great I am. I am someone who takes incredible risks and finds great success. What would it be like to embrace that? What are your earliest memories where that is true?”“You cannot access creativity if the conditions that you have created for yourself to be creative have not been set.”“Sometimes the way that we protect our imaginations is with our creativity, right? That's where it all flows from by allowing what is arising in us that is keeping us stuck…allowing it to flow through us and to inform us about any limitations that we're placing on ourselves, any lies that we're telling ourselves, any old stories that are coming up and distorting how we believe, how we believe we can exist and what we believe that we can have. That's another way of protecting our imaginations.”STAY IN TOUCHCome and follow me on Instagram @moniquershields and I would love your feedback so send an email to ambition@moniquershields.com.

When we find ourselves in a time of intensity over extended periods of time, wisdom says ... it's wise (and essential) to pause and consider what we need to cultivate, replenish and retain our life force (our energy) and radiance (our light). I'm suggesting that now is such a time ... not to pull the covers over our heads, or think one vacation will wipe away the tiredness ... but also not to keep pushing forward believing there is some magic moment all will be well or our work will be done. But instead ... we choose to stay aware and awake to what's happening in our world, while at the same time pulling our focus into our own personal ecosystem and what we need to replenish, now. Like a dusty, tired car that has been on a long journey... it actually needs more than just gas to fill up... it needs a wash, a vacum, likely some air freshner and a reprieve .... so do we. So here's my question... what do you need in the next several weeks or months (this summer/winter season or next 40 days) to replenish your radiance and life force ... on all 4 realms... mind, body, heart and spirit? AND... what do you need to give yourself permission to take the time and space, to allocate the resources, and to pull back to 70% on some things, so you have that 30% to focus on what cultivates deeper reserves of energy. So you have the inner resources to create what's next - for yourself, those you guide and what matters to you in this world. This episode #268: Permission to Replenish Your Radiance, is an intentional creative process + a full permission slip to 'do' what replenishes and lifts your spirit ... nourishes and fills your heart... clears and inspires your mind ... revitalizes and soothes your body... in the next time span of your choosing. Consider this: When we consciously cultivate our lifeforce and radiance, we create longevity of wellbeing + the ability to dance through intensity, as a paradox and path vs. a polarity and problem to fix. Then, instead of just spending that radiance, energy and light as soon as we fill up enough ... we choose to 'condense' it...let it stir and stew and gather up power and aliveness ... choosing to spend some not all ... so come the next season, we have the energy to rise and harvest, to create. Tune in. Take a breath. Take a beat. When we root into our radiance and what is real, our path and purpose naturally unfold. And we have the energy to meet the moment and play our parts, together. with heart, Christine p.s.
