Nick Gojcaj grew up in Queens dreaming of becoming an NYPD cop, but after that didn't work out, he spent 20 years in the corporate world before making a drastic career change in his 40s—joining Rikers Island as a corrections officer. For three years he worked inside one of America's most notorious jails, dealing with chaos, violence, and the daily dangers of being a prison guard, until a confrontation with inmates left him permanently disabled. Instead of protecting him, Rikers illegally terminated his job, sparking a legal battle that he's still fighting today. In this episode, Nick opens up about his journey from the academy to life on the inside, the shocking realities of working at Rikers, and how he's now exposing the system that betrayed him. #RikersIsland #PrisonGuard #CorrectionsOfficer #NYCPrisons #RikersStories #PrisonLife #LawEnforcement #CorruptionExposed Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ Presented by Tyson 2.0 & Wooooo Energy: https://tyson20.com/ https://woooooenergy.com/ Use code LOCKEDIN for 20% OFF Wooooo Energy Buy Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop Timestamps: 00:00 Prison Realities and Riker's Introduction 00:19 Nick's Unusual Career Path 01:51 Favorite Episodes and Influential People 03:21 Union Perks, Disability, and Department Politics 04:23 Growing Up: Family and Childhood Influences 05:21 School Trouble and Early Aspirations 06:12 Drinking, Gambling, and Avoiding Trouble 08:09 Crime, Arrests, and a Flawed System 09:49 Stable Home vs. Turbulent Friends 10:57 From College Hopes to Law Enforcement Dreams 13:09 College Life and NYPD Rejection 14:35 Corporate World: Two Decades Lost 16:08 Career Pivot: Joining Corrections at 44 17:43 Correctional Academy: Training Realities 20:08 Academy vs. Real World at Rikers 22:47 Early Days on the Job & Learning from Inmates 26:03 Systemic Issues: Contraband, Corruption, and Challenges 29:39 Schedules, Overtime, and Hidden Job Hazards 33:09 Facing Reality: Dangerous Shifts, Staff Politics 36:14 Respect, Dignity, and Handling Inmates 39:41 Violence, Use of Force, and Officer Dilemmas 43:00 The Incident and Long-Term Injury 47:34 Aftermath: Desk Duty, Recovery, and Abrupt Firing 53:46 Legal Fight and Alleged Retaliation 58:39 Department Corruption and Favoritism 01:02:02 Lawsuit, Motivation, and Moving Forward 01:06:10 Advice, Support, and Closing Thoughts Powered by: Just Media House : https://www.justmediahouse.com/ Creative direction, design, assets, support by FWRD: https://www.fwrd.co Learn more about your ad choices. The studio was bursting at the seams during this recording, as Hannah and Taylor welcomed the stars of the 'Killers, Cults and Queens' podcast, Nikki and Cheryl, as well as a veritable posse of onlookers sitting at the side-lines. As Nikki and Cheryl are no strangers to crimey content, it's not surprising that they each came armed with stories of ne'er-do-wells infiltrating their own lives, which includes spectral beings and TV producers - so not too dissimilar. The gang then investigates a case in which Taylor displays a surprising amount of knowledge on the art of knife throwing, before delving into a listener crime which could be referred to as 'The Italian Job' , but on a slightly smaller scale. In a conversation about Pete Alonso breaking his all-time Mets home run record, Darryl Strawberry showed his championship pedigree, focusing not on the individual accomplishment but on the importance of winning. Strawberry insisted that while records are nice, they are ultimately hollow without championships. He passionately recalled the "hate to lose" mentality of the 1986 Mets and urged the current team to adopt that same fierce, competitive spirit to deliver a winner for the long-suffering fan base. While classy and appreciative of Alonso, Strawberry's message was clear: individual accolades are secondary to team success and bringing a championship back to Queens. The conversation was a two-part affair: a heated debate and a touching call. First, BT and Sal sparred over Juan Soto's performance, with BT defending his still-elite numbers and Sal arguing that his "down year" was proof of inconsistency. The argument was a classic BT & Sal showdown, complete with pulled cards and passionate monologues. The segment's tone shifted entirely when a call from Darryl Strawberry came in, with the Mets legend offering a gracious and heartfelt congratulations to Pete Alonso for breaking his franchise home run record, a moment that was both personal and celebratory.

Sal and BT, fresh off vacation, are fired up about the Mets' recent struggles, particularly after a soul-crushing loss. The discussion centers on a core question: is manager Carlos Mendoza to blame, or are the players simply not performing? While acknowledging that Mendoza has made some questionable decisions, they also point to a pitching staff that can't get past the fourth inning and an offense that can't consistently produce. The hosts debate whether this is a symptom of a deeper, systemic issue within the team, and if a change in leadership would truly fix the problem, or if the blame lies squarely on the players' shoulders.

The ultimate bar crawl of Old New York continues through a survey of classic bars and taverns that trace their origins from the 1850s through the 1880s.And this time we're recording within two of America's most famous establishments, joined by the people who know that history the best.In Part One, we introduced you to the origin story of New York City tavern life in the Dutch and colonial periods, and we ventured into Fraunces Tavern to witness the creation of the United States itself. Then we headed out to Queens and to Neir's Tavern, which quenched the thirsts of horse-racing fans in the early 19th century -- and reinvented itself in the 20th century thanks to Mae West and Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas. For part two, we fill out our list of the most historic bars and taverns still serving customers in the 21st century -- from SoHo to Williamsburg, from Midtown Manhattan to Red Hook, Brooklyn. But we center our adventure within two classic Manhattan bars, which wear their histories proudly upon the walls:-- McSorley's Old Ale House is the most famous Irish saloon in New York City (and dare we even say, the whole country?), and its stacked, cluttered walls -- every strange piece tells a story -- welcome you inside to become a part of its history. Historian Will Wander and long-time bartender Shane Buggy provide a most intoxicating tour of the joint.-- Pete's Tavern has become famous as one of America's most enduring literary bars thanks to its long-time association with O. Henry. But there are so many more secrets awaiting you -- from its association with Tammany Hall to its curious transformation into a "flower shop" during Prohibition. General manager Gary Egan and owner Steve Troy reveal many surprising twists in Pete's own history. This episode was edited and produced by Kieran Gannon.
