Sanctuaire Farms: Bougie Homesteading

Dreaming of a bougie homesteading lifestyle? Tune in to this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast as host Carol Morgan chats with Jennifer and Rob Beecham of Folia Group about Sanctuaire Farms — a modern farmstead living community in Ball Ground, Georgia, offering 5- to 15-acre homesites designed for sustainable, regenerative living. A Modern Take on Homesteading Located in Cherokee County, Sanctuaire Farms features 54 homesites across 461 acres. Each home includes five to 15 acres of land, ready to be transformed with residents' agricultural visions. Natural, rolling hills and creek-front lots offer scenic views from your front door, while onsite agricultural amenities provide ample opportunities to engage with neighbors and connect as a family. Sanctuaire Farms is thoughtfully designed by Atlanta architect, Steven Kemp. Rob Beecham said, “We are conservationists and we are developing a sustainable, regenerative community that is very green-centered.” After the COVID-19 pandemic, the Beecham family purchased a 122-acre plot in Ball Ground and decided to start fresh. They quickly realized they didn't need as much land and subdivided the acreage into a five-track community with friends. The connectivity of this community inspired them to create a central farm where residents could learn farming techniques together and grow as individuals. “What we found is most people moved off the farm several generations ago, and we all lost all those skills, and it's much easier to learn them in a kind of corporate community environment,” said Rob Beecham. “From that experience, we envisioned a much larger adaptation of what we were doing on our farm, and that's how Sanctuaire Farms was kind of birthed.” Agrarian Learning at The Grange In addition to its homesites, Sanctuaire Farms also showcases a 50-acre store and agrarian learning center known as The Grange, where residents can learn helpful farming and gardening practices from professionals. Currently, the Grange includes a community garden, six Highland cows and two horses. At completion, residents will enjoy a fully functioning farm with a dairy and farmer's market. “What we tell people is, you don't have to do everything on your own farm,” said Rob Beecham. “You can do the things you're passionate about and then supplement the other things you don't necessarily need to do. You can supplement by participating in our community farm. It gives you the ability to be a part-time farmer if you want.” Jennifer Beecham will oversee community events at The Grange, such as dinners, social clubs and learning opportunities. “The unique thing is we'll be open to the public,” said Jennifer Beecham. “This is not just something for the community itself; it's also for the whole community and surrounding areas, and so that other people get to enjoy the Grange itself too.” A Focus on Sustainability Sanctuaire Farms is a fully regenerative community, from its produce and animal maintenance to the construction of homesites. Residents will be expected to utilize pesticide- and chemical-free practices and invest in organic farming techniques. "We've changed our complete lifestyle of how we eat, where we shop, and where we buy our food,” said Rob Beecham. “More and more people are coming on board to understand how important this is, and we see that playing a vital role in our community and people's lives.” Life at Sanctuaire Farms When pre-sales began a few months ago, homesites at Sanctuaire Farms went quickly. The Beechams estimate that 30 homes are already accounted for, proving that homebuyers are seeking this lifestyle. The development stage will begin shortly, with sales anticipated to start at the end of this year. “We've got people that are coming in and building smaller homes that are more focused on the farming side,” said Rob Beecham. “And we have a number of folks that have purchased multiple lots and plan on building much larger, kind of grander estates.

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the project, awarding the contract to Wilson Construction Management, the lowest bidder. Construction, in partnership with the city of Ball Ground, begins in May and will take about a year, with intermittent lane closures. Funded by SPLOST and a $500,000 GDOT grant, the roundabout also marks the first phase of the Ball Ground Bypass project. STORY 2: Canton Police Investigating Fatal Crash The Canton Police Department is investigating a fatal crash involving a tractor-trailer and an SUV on Riverstone Parkway near the I-575 southbound on-ramp. Emergency responders quickly arrived, and the interstate was temporarily closed for investigation and cleanup. The roadway has since reopened, but the cause of the crash remains under investigation. The development, by Ball Ground Business Park, LLC, will feature three 50,000-square-foot buildings and 411 parking spaces. Zoned as a "workplace center," it aligns with the county's vision for light industrial use. Access will be from Ball Ground Highway, with no entry via Allison Lane. This refund, pending board approval, follows years of scrutiny over Taylor’s collection of over $425,000 in passport fees as personal income. The issue also sparked a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe and legislative efforts to increase transparency. Taylor’s office has faced additional criticism for severe dysfunction, including a botched software change in 2024 that disrupted court operations. Despite these challenges, Taylor was reelected in 2024. STORY 2: Historic McAfee House Sold for $1, will be Relocated The historic Robert McAfee house, built in the 1840s, will be relocated to Ball Ground, Georgia, after being sold for $1 by Cobb Landmarks to Lee and Brittani Lusk, experienced renovators of historic homes. The Lusks plan to restore the home as a private residence, adhering to historic preservation standards. The move, costing an estimated $75,000-$100,000, with renovations around $200,000, must be completed by May 15. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, October 11th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Man Indicted in Austell Hotel Fire On October 3, Anthony Quinn was indicted on arson charges for allegedly starting a fire at a Knights Inn in Austell in 2021. According to Cobb Superior Court, Quinn, from Ball Ground, Georgia, faces a first-degree arson charge after surveillance footage captured him entering and exiting Room 303 on September 19, 2021. Smoke was soon seen emerging from the room. Investigators concluded that Quinn deliberately set the fire, putting 16 people, including a child, in adjoining rooms at risk. Quinn was also seen leaving the scene in a stolen Ford F-150. Later, he allegedly threatened to set his uncle on fire in Winston, Georgia. That same morning, he was arrested by Douglas County deputies on unrelated charges while on I-20. The fire department responded to extinguish the blaze, and the investigation confirmed the fire was intentionally set by Quinn. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com. STORY 2:  Developer Leasing Vacant Buildings near Canton for Commercial Use Cherokee County has approved the rezoning of 0.29 acres at 3350 Marietta Highway from single-family residential to general commercial. This change allows for the leasing of two vacant buildings—previously the Biskit Barn restaurant and another commercial space—for new businesses. The Board of Commissioners also approved several variances, including reduced setbacks and buffer requirements, to bring the existing structures into compliance with county codes. The property, which includes a drive-thru parking lot, is set to be utilized for commercial purposes, as confirmed by the county documents. STORY 3:  Drive-Thru Flu Shots Available in Woodstock Oct. 1 The North Georgia Health District is offering drive-thru flu shots across several counties this October. Flu shots are free with most health plans; otherwise, the cost is $25 for a regular vaccine and $65 for a high-dose version for those 65 and older. The updated flu vaccine this season will be trivalent, covering three influenza strains, excluding the B/Yamagata lineage. High-dose vaccines contain more antigen and are recommended for seniors. STORY 7:  Cherokee Postpones Vote on Gas Station Rezoning Cherokee County commissioners have postponed a decision on a rezoning request for a gas station and retail store to Sept. 17. The request, from H. Michael Bray for Michael Wilson of Wilson Property Investments, seeks to rezone 4.085 acres from office and institutional to general commercial for a 6,400-square-foot convenience store with gas pumps and a 2,000-square-foot retail building. While some residents support the project, Commissioner Richard Weatherby requested more time to review property history. The Cherokee County Planning Commission had recommended denial. A final decision is set for Sept. 17. We'll have closing comments after this.    COMMERCIAL: Heller 2   SIGN OFF –   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast. The proposed millage rate includes 5.223 mills for maintenance and operations (M&O) and 0.454 mills for parks bond debt service, totaling 5.677 mills. This new rate is slightly higher than last year's but below the 2022 rate. If approved, property owners could see an increase in their taxes—about $27.55 for a $475,000 home and $20.30 for a $350,000 non-homestead property. Public hearings will be held on August 19 and August 26 at the Chambers at City Center. STORY 5:   Ball Ground Floating Pay Raises for Mayor and City Council Ball Ground is considering pay raises for its mayor and city council, set to take effect in January 2026 if approved in October. The mayor's salary could rise from $300 to $650 per month, and the city council's pay from $50 to a flat $400 per month. This increase aims to align Ball Ground's salaries with neighboring municipalities, as current rates have been unchanged for over 20 years. The city council believes the adjustment is necessary to fairly compensate officials for their time and responsibilities. Additionally, the city is interviewing candidates for a new city clerk due to the retirement of Karen Jordan. For more details, visit the City of Ball Ground's website. Registration opens at 6 a.m., with the 5K starting at 8 a.m. and the other races following. The event, which includes a cow costume contest and a performance by the North GA Cloggers, raises funds for the Cherokee County Educational Foundation and Cherokee County Special Olympics. Over the past decade, it has raised over $300,000. Registration fees are $50 for the 5K, $25 for the calf run and nugget roll, and $25 for a “ghost runner” option. The race is held rain or shine. STORY 7:  Georgia House Study Committee Takes Up Fishing Rights Jud Turner, former director of Georgia's Environmental Protection Division, suggested that state agency regulations might resolve the complex issue of public fishing rights more effectively than new legislation. During a House study committee meeting, Turner emphasized that rulemaking allows for public input and is well-suited for defining which Georgia rivers and streams are navigable for fishing. This follows legal disputes over fishing bans on private property, which led to recent legislative changes, including removing the “public trust doctrine” to address property owner concerns. The committee, tasked with clarifying navigability, has until December to complete its work but may not necessarily issue recommendations.     We'll have closing comments after this.    COMMERCIAL: Heller   SIGN OFF –   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast. Hawk's Ridge Golf Course in Ball Ground, Georgia, has many rave reviews, and for good reason. However, maintaining the course isn't easy. The hot, humid climate is a challenge, but course superintendent James Rauhuff and his team do excellent work. Rauhuff credits Redox TurfRx™ as a key part of his success. In fact, his course greens actually aged in reverse since improvements were made to their nutrition program.“I firmly believe one of the main reasons was due to the Redox line of products,” Rauhuff said. “The way those products perform is superior to anything else that I have used. Combining Redox products, optimum soil chemistry, root growth and health, and an ideal air to water relationship has provided the soil microorganisms a conducive growing environment which I believe has helped reverse the aging of our greens.”The par 72 course was designed by Bob Cupp and has plenty of beautiful features, including a centerpiece waterfall on hole 15.If you play a round at Hawk's Ridge, keep an eye out for Ziva and Duke, James's German Shepherds that are so loved that members now carry treats in their golf bags to give to them as they're on the course.

Twin Lakes in Hoschton is a master-planned community with an extensive builder lineup! Focused on providing top-tier products in this community, Eastwood Homes offers two-story ranch-style homes spotlighting three to five bedrooms, two to three bathrooms and 1,829 to 3,047 square feet of living space priced from the high $400,000s. House Bill 1013, signed by Gov. Brian Kemp, calls for a referendum requiring seniors receiving the exemption to have lived in Woodstock for five years. The bill, supported by Woodstock City Council, aims to ensure fairness and sustainability of the benefit amidst growing city population. Seniors 62 and older currently qualify for the exemption without income or home value limits. Additionally, Senate Bill 388 proposes eliminating the cap on school property taxes for Cherokee County seniors, subject to voter approval in May. If passed, both measures would take effect in 2025. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by Powers Electrical Solutions. Today is Wednesday, September 20th and I'm Keith Ippolito. The Ball Ground City Council has approved a 5% hotel/motel tax, effective from January 1. This tax will apply to short-term rentals such as Airbnb or VRBO since the city does not have any hotels or motels. The revenue generated will be used for infrastructure improvements, city events, promoting tourism, and enhancing the downtown district. Despite not having traditional hotels, the city expects to generate between $8,000 to $12,000 annually through this tax, especially with upcoming short-term rental units. Ball Ground could soon collect hotel/motel taxes on Airbnbs and VRBOs From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by Powers Electrical Solutions. Today is Friday, September 15th and I'm Keith Ippolito. The Ball Ground City Council is set to vote on implementing a 5% hotel/motel tax that would apply to short-term rentals like Airbnb and VRBO. The tax revenue would be used for infrastructure improvements, city events, and tourism promotion. Around three-fifths of the tax would go towards downtown district improvements and events, while 2% would be allocated for city promotion and tourism-related venues. Although Ball Ground currently lacks hotels or motels, it anticipates generating $8,000 to $12,000 annually from this tax, thanks to 24 short-term rental units in the planning stages. Other nearby areas, including Cherokee County, Canton, Holly Springs, and Woodstock, already have similar taxes in place. If approved, the council will also consider amending the fee schedule to include hotel/motel taxes during the same meeting, which also includes discussions on various other topics, including an American Rescue Plan Act budget and vending machine standards. The Jeep was making a left turn from Waldan Lane onto Bells Ferry Road when the motorcycle, traveling south on Bells Ferry Road, collided with the side of the SUV. Torres was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. The occupants of the Jeep were unharmed. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the accident, and preliminary findings suggest that the Jeep pulled out in front of the motorcycle while the motorcycle was traveling at a high speed. No charges have been filed at this time.   Story 3: muslim   During a Canton City Council meeting, opposition arose from area residents regarding a conditional use permit request by Eden Community Centers for a social and cultural center at a specific location on Marietta Highway. Concerns were raised by residents about the need for a second center, potential religious influence, and the impact on local businesses. The council requested further information about the center's inclusivity, occupancy limits, religious activities, and potential impact on surrounding businesses. The vote on the request is scheduled for July 20.   Back in a moment   Break:  ESOG - Drake – Ingles 8   STORY 4: kidney   Denise Robinson, a Ball Ground resident, is seeking a kidney transplant donor to help manage her kidney disease and continue caring for her family. Living donor transplants offer better long-term outcomes and allow her to avoid the burdensome dialysis treatment.   Story 5: greene   Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has been expelled from the House Freedom Caucus, a prominent conservative group in Congress, following a heated feud with fellow Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert. Greene's expulsion was largely due to her derogatory remarks towards Boebert, including calling her an expletive during a dispute on the House floor. The altercation stemmed from their differing proposals to impeach President Joe Biden. This public spat was not the first between the two lawmakers, who have clashed previously over political alliances and strategies. Greene's removal from the caucus means she will no longer participate in their strategy sessions and discussions.   Story 6:  vajda   Former Creekview golfer Jack Vajda emerged as the champion in the 73rd annual Golden Isles Invitational golf tournament held in Brunswick, GA. Four hundred caregivers also attended the special caregivers dinner event, with catering donated from Truett's Chick-fil-A in Woodstock.  Millions of daffodils will soon be on display at Gibbs Gardens near Ball Ground, the garden announced. The garden will be open for its twelfth annual Daffodil ColorFest March 1 through April 15. There will be over 20 million daffodils in the garden, which spans over 100 acres. According to Gibbs Gardens, 577,000 additional bulbs were planted for this season. Over 100 varieties have been planted, and some varieties bloom later than others, so visitors will see the landscape change over six weeks, according to Gibbs Gardens. Admission is $25 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 or older, $10 for children ages 3 to 17, and free for children 2 years old and younger. Market vendors must have an agricultural connection. The market does not feature arts and crafts vendors. Hard copies of the vendor application are available at the Woodstock Visitors Center, 8588 Main St. The market is sponsored by Synovus. Cherokee County School District educators were celebrated on Valentine's Day in the district's annual Share the Love contest. Earlier this month, CCSD invited families to nominate their child's teacher or a support staff member at their child's school to win a $250 Visa gift card. The contest was announced in the monthly CCSD Connections parent newsletter, and four winners were selected at random from all of the nominations. The contest is sponsored by Credit Union of Georgia. Superintendent Brian Hightower and Credit Union of Georgia Cherokee Area Manager Jason Blakey presented the gifts Tuesday to four winners: Knox Elementary School STEM Academy teacher Sandy Giudice, Liberty Elementary School teacher Tiffany Wilson, Little River Elementary School teacher Chesley Blosser and Sixes Elementary School teacher Melissa Perryman. The presentations were a surprise and were greeted with applause and cheers from teachers and colleagues. #CherokeeCounty #Georgia #LocalNews           -          -          -          -          -          -          The Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast is local news for Woodstock, Canton, and all of Cherokee County. Register Here for your essential digital news.             This podcast was produced and published for the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger and TribuneLedgerNews.com by BG Ad Group     For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com/    https://cuofga.org/   https://www.drakerealty.com/   https://www.esogrepair.com/         See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The event hosted 14 categories for students between third and twelfth grade, and had 200 total CCSD students. First place winners will compete in the state round on March 11 at the Academies of Creative Education, located on 1160 Dahlonega Highway in Cumming. Students who earned a top three placing in their category at the regional event will receive a medal or ribbon for their achievement. Frank Graham and Lori Stuart, both CCSD instructional technology specialists, organized the event according to a CCSD press release. The regional event was held virtually this year with students submitting a video presentation of their projects. CCSD students competed alongside Pickens, Gilmer, Murray and Fannin County students in the Piedmont region. For a full list of CCSD region winners, visit https://www.cherokeek12.net/News/techfair23. Cherokee County accounted for 29 of 36 possible selections on the all-Region 6AAAAAA basketball teams this week, with two players of the year in Brandon Rechsteiner and Mataya Gayle. Etowah's Rechsteiner and River Ridge's Gayle led their respective squads to No. 1 seeds heading into next week's region tournament. The Eagles are 11-1 in Region 6AAAAAA play, while the Knights went undefeated in the region for the second straight year. Eight honorees came from River Ridge, including five from the girls team alone — Gayle, first-teamer Sophia Pearl, second-teamer Kayla Cleaveland and honorable mentions Allie Sweet and Makayla Roberson. Through 25 games, Gayle leads River Ridge with 17.1 points per game, adding 5.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds on average. Pearl is averaging 13.4 points, behind only Gayle and Cleaveland (14.7 points, 5.8 rebounds). Etowah had the second-most players named to the all-region teams, with five boys and one girl. Mason Etter joined Rechsteiner as first-teamers, while Chase Clemmons and Dimitri Angelakos were named to the second team. Rechsteiner and the Eagles had an especially strong January. The Virginia Tech-bound guard averaged 19.3 points, 5.1 assists and 4.3 rebounds while leading Etowah to a 9-1 record in the month. Sequoyah and Woodstock each had five players earn all-region recognition, with Creekview at four. Following its rejuvenation during region play, Woodstock's girls were represented by Karson Martin and Casey Miller on the first team, alongside Pearl and Sequoyah's Elle Blatchford. Four nonprofit organizations in metro Atlanta have received donations from Delta Community Credit Union toward their respective mission to support local youth education. The credit union invested $35,000 in the educational services organizations Wednesday, kicking off the 10th year of its “Philanthropic Fund” awards. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta was awarded $10,000 to support its “Big Futures” curriculum, which emphasizes college and career exploration for students in grades 8 through 12. The organization, which offers one-to-one mentoring relationships for area youth, serves families in 12 metro Atlanta counties including Cherokee County. Another $10,000 was awarded to Communities in Schools of Atlanta, a dropout prevention organization that partners with 63 schools in economically challenged areas across Atlanta Public Schools, as well as Clayton County, DeKalb County, and Fulton County Public Schools. The grant will help provide wraparound services and intensive case management to nearly 2,800 students and support the organization's College and Career Readiness Program. Breakthrough Atlanta also received $10,000 to support its Vox Teen Voices program, which offers free afterschool and summer workshops for Atlanta teens. Mental Fitness 21st Century Learning received $5,000 to support its STEAM Academy, which allows many students who lack access to quality, affordable afterschool programs to participate in a STEAM curriculum that includes drones and robotics. Cherokee County and four of its cities have received a federal grant for the creation of a transportation safety plan to improve pedestrian safety. Cherokee County, Canton, Holly Springs, Woodstock and Ball Ground were awarded a $450,000 action plan grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All program on Feb. 1. The grant was part of $800 million in awards for 510 projects through the first round of funding for the program, which provides funding for regional and local jurisdictions to develop a transportation safety action plan aimed at improving road designs to better sidewalks and crosswalks to prevent deaths and serious injuries on the nation's roadways. Day told the Tribune Friday that the public can expect to see the plan in 2024. The next steps are to complete grant award agreements and procure a consultant to complete the study. The study will likely begin later this year, he said. The plan will determine what projects and countermeasures are needed to improve the safety of the county's transportation system, Day said. With this plan and list of projects, the county and the cities can then set forth a strategy and timeline to complete the projects. Day added that the plan will likely make recommendations on intersection, signalization and pedestrian facilities improvements, among other possibilities. Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services promoted two firefighters Thursday night at the Cherokee County Fire Training Complex. Fire Apparatus Operator Justin Martin was promoted to the rank of sergeant and Sgt. Nicholas Spain was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. The two were surrounded by family, friends, and fellow firefighters at the event as they were recognized and celebrated for this accomplishment. Fire Chief Eddie Robinson pinned the promoted firefighters with their new-collar insignia. Badges were pinned on the firefighters by family members.

Woodstock celebrates its 125th birthday

Woodstock is celebrating its 125th birthday. Woodstock leaders and residents marked the occasion December 3, at the city's 26th Annual Christmas Jubilee and Parade of Lights in downtown Woodstock, which began in 1997 to mark the city's centennial. According to the city, settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s and a postmaster was established in 1833. The railroad and train depot were constructed in 1879. The city of Woodstock was granted a charter by the Georgia General Assembly on December 8, 1897. Main Street was paved in 1912 and 70 years later, Interstate 575 was built. Mayor Michael Caldwell will issue a proclamation in honor of the city's 125th birthday at the start of the December 12 mayor and council meeting at 7 p.m. at the Chambers at City Center, 8588 Main St. The parade had 109 entries this year, many of which paid tribute to the city's birthday. There were six marching bands from three local high schools and three home school groups. Judges included Council Member Tracy Collins, Assistant City Manager Coty Thigpen and IN WDSTK Board Member Bonnie Keheley. One of Cherokee County's premier college football prospects, Woodstock offensive lineman Tyler Douthit announced his commitment to Samford on Monday. The Wolverines' 6-foot-5, 280-pound senior was Woodstock's offensive MVP for the 2022 season. The offensive lineman chose Samford — a perennial contender from the Football Championship Subdivision's Southern Conference — among more than 20 offers, including Maryland, Georgia State and Toledo. Douthit prided himself on leading Woodstock's offensive line, a unit he said is the foundation of every football team. The Wolverines took major strides on both sides of the ball in 2022, and though it may not have showed up in the box score, Douthit's handprints were all over that improvement. In games against River Ridge, Rome, Allatoona and more, Douthit was tasked with guarding some of the state's premier pass-rushing units. He particularly helped keep the Allatoona's pass-rushers under control, allowing just one sack to a front that combined for 33.5 this season. Douthit has college and professional football pedigree in his family. His uncle, Adam Meadows, was a star offensive lineman at McEachern High School in Cobb County before moving on to play at Georgia and then the NFL as a second-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 1997. Cherokee Area Transportation Service Director Greg Powell gave a presentation on the county's new propane fueled buses at Georgia Transit Association conference last week in Columbus, the county announced. Powell's presentation, “Propane Autogas – A Pathway to Lower Emissions and Operational Savings,” focused on cost-saving measures and the benefits of propane autogas for transit services. In October, Cherokee County put the first propane-powered public transit buses in the state of Georgia in service. CATS purchased three propane-powered buses from Coach and Equipment Bus Sales, Inc. in February to replace aging buses in the fleet. Conference attendees learned from several fleet managers about their experiences with new energy sources after transitioning from gasoline or diesel. The presentation included a life cycle analysis of the carbon emissions of two of the most prevalent alternative energy sources for vehicles and the future of clean transportation, and how propane can allow fleets to reach their sustainability goals. As the sun fell Friday night, thousands gathered in downtown Ball Ground for the March of the Toys Parade for Toys for Tots, led by Irlene Mandrell of “Hee Haw” Fame and the Creekview High School marching band. The parade of over 70 groups from Boy Scouts to classic cars, dancers and cosplayers to heavy equipment and fire engines snaked its way through Ball Ground, welcoming Santa and Mrs. Claus just over an hour later. The parade now in its eighth year, draws a massive crowd from both Ball Ground and the surrounding area. The parade has been a welcome addition to the Toys for Tots annual campaign, who distributed 883,000 toys to children in the Atlanta area last year. The Marine Corps Reserve collected 25 boxes of toys at Friday's event. New, unwrapped toys can still be dropped off at fire stations across Cherokee County. Stations will be accepting toys for local charities until December 16. For more information on the event, visit marchofthetoysparade.com or check back next fall for details on the 2023 parade. Bryce Leatherwood from Cherokee County has made it to the live finale of NBC's “The Voice.” Leatherwood, from Hickory Flat near Woodstock, was one of five to move on to the finale from the Top 8 Live Playoffs this week. Contestants will perform two songs Monday, as well as a duet with their coach, in Leatherwood's case, a song with Blake Shelton. Viewers will then cast their vote for the winner of "The Voice." The winner will be announced Tuesday night. Monday, Leatherwood performed Justin Moore's "If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away." He also performed a duet with fellow contestant Morgan Myles. The duo performed Whitney Houston's "Saving My All My Love for You." Leatherwood was one of four contestants to automatically advance due to the number of votes he received. “The Voice” airs at 8 p.m. Eastern time Mondays and Tuesdays on NBC and Peacock TV. Fans can vote at NBC.com/VoiceVote or vote on the official The Voice app. Voting will open Monday. A fan can vote for an artist 10 times per email address, according to NBC. Governor Brian Kemp signed an executive order Thursday suspending the state sales tax on gasoline for the seventh and final time since March, when pump prices began climbing after the outbreak of war in Ukraine. The latest suspension will run through January 10, the day after Georgia lawmakers convene under the Gold Dome for the 2023 General Assembly session. After that, Kemp will look to the legislature to help provide tax relief to Georgians in other ways, the governor said during a news conference at the state Capitol. Kemp, who was reelected to a second term in office last month, repeated a pledge he made on the campaign trail this year to push for an additional $1 billion state income tax rebate on top of the $1.6 billion tax rebate Georgia lawmakers approved this year. He also is asking the legislature for $1 billion in property tax rebates. Incoming Republican legislative leaders appeared with Kemp Thursday to lend support to his tax cutting proposals.

Georgia's U.S. Senate runoff election is about two things, Sen. Raphael Warnock told supporters Saturday in Woodstock: competency and character. Warnock, the Democratic senator in a bid for reelection against Republican challenger and former University of Georgia football player Herschel Walker, made a stop outside Allen Temple AME Church during his runoff bus tour. A spokesperson for the Warnock campaign said about 300 people were in attendance at the event. He urged attendees to tell family and friends to vote, saying, “tell them there's too much on the line to stay home. tell them there's too much at stake... and the differences between me and my opponent are too wide.” Georgia's runoff election could determine which party controls the U.S. Senate. The Ebenezer Baptist Church pastor criticized his opponent, who he said had been dishonest about his credentials, claims to have worked with law enforcement and that he graduated from the University of Georgia. The senator touted his record, including sponsoring legislation to cap the costs of insulin for Medicare patients. Warnock told supporters he has a history of working across the aisle with Republican lawmakers, including Senator Ted Cruz, who was in Canton nine days before to stump for Walker. Walker pointed to the infrastructure bill, the PACT Act for veterans, and bills on gun control, maternal mortality, agriculture and making railway crossings safer as results of his bipartisan work. Officials from Keep Georgia Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., recently welcomed Cherokee County to its expanding community-based Network of Affiliates with the certification of “Keep Cherokee Beautiful.” After a year of preparation, KCB finalized its affiliate certification at a recognition ceremony Tuesday at the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners work session. The affiliation process included the formation of a community team, attendance to numerous training events and the development of an action plan. In attaining the certification, Keep Cherokee Beautiful joins more than 70 local affiliates across Georgia. In addition, KCB will join more than 700 KAB affiliates, including 26 state affiliates, and several international affiliates. Currently, Keep Cherokee Beautiful works to reduce littering through programs like “Adopt-a-Mile,” community cleanups and supporting electronics recycling events, as well as providing recycling education through the organization's monthly electronic newsletter. In addition to receiving its program affiliation, KCB also recognized several members with awards that included Lisa Johnson who received the Outstanding Volunteer award, as well as the BridgeMill Homeowners Association, which received the award for Outstanding Adopt-A-Mile Partner. According to Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, firefighters and Cherokee Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a residential structure fire fire at 10:40 p.m. Saturday on Fletcher Drive near Conns Creek Road. Firefighters found a home with significant fire involvement, and deployed hose lines to begin extinguishing it while ensuring all occupants were out of the home, the fire department reported. Due to the location of the closest fire hydrant, crews had to shuttle water to the scene using multiple fire engines. Fletcher Drive was shut down while crews responded to the fire. The structure, destroyed in the fire, was a home to five residents. One of those residents reported injuries and was assessed by Cherokee Fire personnel but refused transport to the hospital. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family with resources. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.   Developers applying to the city of Canton for annexations, rezonings or anything else that requires a public hearing for residential developments will have to wait a year before they can go to the city council. The Canton City Council unanimously approved an abeyance on applications for public hearings Thursday related to residential projects for a period of 12 months, effective immediately. An abeyance refers to a suspension of a process. This would not affect residential projects that are already approved or in development, were already scheduled to appear before the city council prior to the approval of the abeyance, or public hearings for proposed commercial developments. The city is also reaching the midpoint of the comprehensive planning cycle through the state of Georgia. During this part of the comprehensive plan, the city has an opportunity to adopt a short-term work plan and five-year update to the plan, set to expire in 2028.    The River Ridge girls basketball team started its season 1-0 on Thursday night, beating county rival Cherokee 64-38 at home. Kayla Cleaveland paced the Lady Knights' offense with a game-high 20 points, starting her sophomore season out strong. Sophia Pearl, also just a sophomore, was the second-leading scorer with 16 points, followed by Mataya Gayle with 15 points. Cleaveland dominated the second quarter, scoring 10 of her 10 points in the frame. Pearl took over late, tallying 12 of her points in the fourth quarter, including two 3-pointers. River Ridge started the season ranked No. 1 in the GHSA poll for Class AAAAAA, and in beating Cherokee, it knocked off the No. 8-ranked team in Class AAAAAAA. The Lady Warriors started their season 1-0, but fell even at 1-1 on Thursday. Standout junior Toni Warren scored a team-best nine points, followed by Hannah Harris with six points. Riley Simmons pitched in five points and Madison Moody finished with four. Harris was especially active in the first half to help keep Cherokee in the game, with Warren picking her offense up in the third quarter. Both teams are back in action on Saturday, with River Ridge matching up with Carver, and Cherokee looking to get back in the win column against Lumpkin County.   Ferst Readers of Cherokee County can provide books to more than 130 children in the county for a year thanks to a donation from the Towne Lake Rotary Club Foundation. Julia Johnson, a member of the Ferst Readers Cherokee County Action Team, attended the Nov. 17 Rotary Club of Towne Lake meeting to accept a check on behalf of the nonprofit and shared her passion for Ferst Readers and education. Towne Lake Rotary issued part of the donation several months ago during a time of critical need, and on Thursday, presented the remainder of the donation for a total of $4,730. Ferst Readers was started by Robin Ferst in Madison, Georgia. in 1999 after hearing from a plant executive who was having difficulty finding employees who could read at the level required to be hired. Ferst made it her mission to introduce children to reading early, and the nonprofit, Ferst Readers, was born. The program provides age-appropriate books and a corresponding newsletter for children ages birth to 5 years old every month. In Cherokee County, 240 children receive Ferst Readers' services.

“Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.” -Psalm 111:2   “…the attitude and posture needed by the adult in our work should rather be one of humble observer.  In the child, there exists a hidden, but profoundly religious nature, which the child desires to live out.  For a child to reveal this true nature the adult needs to be prepared for the task of helping this revelation to occur.  We need to recognize that our primary call is to be a humble and attentive observer of life.” (“The Religious Experience with the Child Three to Six,” Journals of the Catechesis of the good Shepherd, 1984-1997, 1995 Newsletter, 258-262)   Lynne Worthington joins us on the podcast again to explore the art of observation, a deep-rooted attribute of what we do in The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.  That through observation we can “discover the true nature of the child” (Montessori) and we can “begin to see the religious potential of the child” (Cavalletti) and then through observing the child we can “listen deeply to God” (Rojcewicz).  She speaks about the basic characteristics and attitudes of an observer (learn to be SILENT, to OBSERVE, to put on the mantle of HUMILITY, to be STILL, and to LISTEN). We discuss the differences between observing in a Montessori classroom and a CGS atrium as well as the differences between observing the different atrium levels.   Lynne speaks into how important Observation is in this work which is shown in our very first Point of Reflection for The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd: The child, particularly the religious life of the child, is central to the interest and commitment of the catechist of the Good Shepherd. The catechist observes and studies the vital needs of the child and the manifestations of those vital needs according to the developmental stage of the child Lynne Worthington worked for 30 years as a catechist for children and adults at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Durham, NC. She also served as the coordinator for CGS in Immaculata School and for the parish. Since 1991 she has taken part in National Formation courses for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, earning certificates as a catechist for all three levels, ages 3-12 years old. She has participated in numerous formation leadership workshops and is recognized as a formation leader by the National Association of The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. She holds an MA degree in Pastoral Studies from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, MO. Lynne now lives in Ball Ground, GA and volunteers in Atria in the Archdiocese of Atlanta. "Selling. No Problem. If you dropped in the middle of downtown with nothing but my phone, I would sell my way to prosperity," said Clint Emerson.Early in Clint's career, he was a sales executive for Lanier/Harris Corp. He used his success as a springboard into the executive ranks. He became the turnaround country manager for the Caribbean, then Australia, and finally South America. But the time came to come home and find a business he could call his own. He bought CableQuest in Ball Ground, Georgia. It had $2mm in sales and was losing $500k per year. It is now growing 40% per year and is profitable. In fact, Clint just made his first acquisition. Clint's faith in Jesus Christ is the foundation for his company's culture. He has a unique formula for hiring, developing, and giving back to his community. His use of company chaplains and a pastor are something I've not seen in any business. Fascinating!

Owner of Music Authority, Melissa Loggins joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum podcast to discuss its various music programs and services along with how Music Authority navigated the Coronavirus pandemic. Loggins joins hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick for the Around Atlanta segment and chats about everything from rock bands to instrument rentals and performances Loggins always knew from a young age that she loved performing arts. As a child, she was a ballerina and had a dream of opening a performing arts school one day. During her time in college, she earned a degree in Music Business. By the age of 25, she owned a music store, achieving her dream and becoming one of the rare people using their degree in the Music Business. Music Authority's in-house repair shop is a full-line repair shop for school band and combo instruments that focuses on keeping the instruments in good working order. The store educates its customers to ensure they understand that their instruments should be serviced every six to eight months. Music Authority provides rentals and lessons on school band equipment, but the main focus is lessons and rentals for combo instruments such as guitars, amplifiers and drum sets. The store focuses on contemporary music and has a strong rock band program that will officially have eight rock bands this Fall. “Most schools have a lessons program, and they have a school band so we're not going to reinvent the wheel and do what schools are already doing well,” mentioned Loggins. “We focus on those students who are getting missed because they play guitar and there isn't a rock band they can join.” The rock band program at Music Authority has three phases. The middle phase is a five-month program aimed at middle schoolers that does not require an audition. All that is needed is a little background information on your chosen instrument. During those five months, students perform two to three productions: two at an in-house venue, The Back Room, and one at an outside venue such as a parking lot concert. Music Authority has been doing Rock Camp since 2003 and the rock band program for five years. Loggins has students who are featured on the radio and she has worked with artists who are now very successful in the music industry. She even has students finding success in the European music scene. The showcase band program is a varsity-level program that requires an audition to join. The program's groups perform at least once a month at venues like RockSolid Brewery in Ball Ground and Joe's Sports Bar in Alpharetta. Guest appearances at the Halcyon Kid's Club, allow toddlers to try out instruments. This program is designed for high schoolers, and some are given the opportunity to travel with Loggins to Nashville, Tennessee to experience the music industry. The newest program offered is an elementary school program giving young children an opportunity to experience and try out music at an earlier age. Music Authority is located in Forsyth County, a county with a fantastic arts program that is currently building a new arts complex for its arts program to utilize. “What we focus on is the kids that aren't getting (needs) met within the school systems because you can't go to the school system and sign up for a rock band. That's something very specific that we do,” said Loggins. “I don't want to compete against my school system. We support them.” Through partnerships with schools Music Authority often supports music programs through sponsorships.  And last year during the pandemic, Music Authority helped raise money to help the elementary school program purchase ukuleles. Twenty percent of the students are adults, and last summer, Music Authority had an adult rock program. Loggins encourages adults to get involved as it's a great way to relieve stress and find a creative outlet. Recently there were enough adult students in the program to make up two bands. Eventually,

President and founder, Stacy Sager, and executive director, Terri Grunduski, of SagerStrong Foundation join the Atlanta Real Estate Forum podcast to share the foundation's mission and this year's upcoming events. They join hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick for the Around Atlanta segment. Sager founded SagerStrong Foundation after losing her husband Craig Sager to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in 2016 after he fought a public battle with the disease for three years. SagerStrong's goal is to share Craig Sager's way of living - having fun and living with style. The mission is to spread awareness for blood cancer patients and support blood cancer research. Sager said, “Craig's whole life in the broadcast arena was showing how time is simply how you live your life. Do it with fun; do it with style.” Previously, they have worked on projects with the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and have funded studies specifically for AML and blood cancer research. In their very first virtual event, Living Legends, the foundation raised $1.2 million. The hour-long event hosted by Ernie Johnson featured living legends Robin Roberts and Charles Barkley. The event featured a candid conversation between Johnson and Roberts, both two-time cancer survivors. SagerStrong has a passion for focusing on pediatric blood cancer research and holding sports-oriented events to give back to kids in the community. With partners such as Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Northside Hospital, the foundation sponsors fun, interactive events throughout the year. “Craig never said, ‘why me?' and he lived a full life,” said Sager. “But when you see a pediatric child go through this, it tears at your heart.” Craig Sager's passions of running and baseball inspired the foundation's Stadium Fun Run. The event, held in conjunction with Northside Hospital, follows the concourse of Truist park and gives participants the option of walking or running. The track finishes on the warning track, allowing baseball fans to take a million-dollar photo of them finishing the run on the home plate. Before and after the run, Tent Town is available to visit various vendors and special guests, the Atlanta Falcons! The Hometown Hero award, given annually to a pediatric cancer patient currently fighting or who has triumphed against blood cancer, is announced at the Stadium Fun Run. The award is sponsored by Grant Refrigeration and the winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship to a school of their choice. The event is scheduled for August 22. The fourth annual Living Out Loud golf tournament is October 11 at Hawks Ridge in Ball Ground, Georgia. The tournament, named for Craig Sager's mantra and memoir title, is an opportunity to have fun and spend time outdoors with friends and family while supporting SagerStrong Foundation and blood cancer research. “It takes a village to make a difference,” said Grunduski. “Being able to do it piece by piece and create a legacy is what we want to do. Craig's legacy was ‘Never Give Up, Never Give In and Fight This' because we can if we work together. And we will find a cure someday.” Monetary assistance is not the only way to support a foundation or spread awareness. Volunteering or donating blood to your local Red Cross is a great free way to show support. Giving back, whether it's volunteering, donating or participating makes a big difference. AtlantaGrubber restaurant review podcast presents episode 4. Yes, we did mention Gio's Chicken Amalfitano in a previous episode, but we give it a more in-depth review here. Reports say that Cubano's is the best Cuban sandwich this city has ever seen. Your infallible restaurant whisperer says for sure if it is. While discussing Cuban sandwiches, we give deserved shoutouts to Mojito's Cuban-American Bistro, Tortugas Cuban Grill, D'Cuban Café, and Buena Gente Cuban Bakery. “Hidden gems” is a phrase thrown around a lot, but what does it mean? Joe Duffy may not be able to define it, but he knows them when he tastes them and he may unveil the two best in Greater Atlanta in Frankfurt Doner and Meats in Ball Ground and Johns Creek's Mama's Kitchen. A jaw-dropping sandwich, remarkable and uncommon in these parts can be had at Emidio's Restaurant. We also head to Snellville to check out Arditi Pizza. We are excited about Episode 3 of the AtlantaGrubber podcast. Please subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts as we are everywhere now. The featured restaurant is O4W Pizza, which has gotten national recognition and has been listed on “Best Pizza in America” lists many times. It's located in the exploding synergistic Parson's Alley in Duluth, GA. Our uber popular Sound Bites--quick hitters talks about Yeah! Burger in Midtown, another of our favorite eateries near GA Tech. We also compare it favorably to Moxie Burger, perhaps the OTP counterpart. Joe Duffy also noshes at veteran-owned Catfish Hox, a really good casual joint in May-Retta. Great news for barbecue hounds as Brian Keenan of Meating Street Barbecue fame is back with Keenan's Pit Bar-B-Cue with catering, pop-ups, and home deliveries of some of the best, if not the best barbecue in the state. After dining with the great Mara Davis at Little Rey, she recommended I bring back the family some Grana from the part of Midtown I worked at for my first several years as a southerner. Onward to Kennesaw and The Rotisserie Shop, a place who does the namesake dish as well as anyone. Turns out Ball Ground is a great place to visit. Some good eats are at the Ball Ground Burger Bus. We plan to return to Ball Ground and explain why. Kool Runnings Jamaican Restaurant, a black-owned restaurant in Peachtree Corners is another place that deserves more publicity.
