Help Kids Grieve After Suicide Loss with Dr. Natalie Ford

In today's episode, host Tina Yeager is joined by Dr. Natalie Ford, a licensed professional counselor, speaker, author, and, as she calls herself, a “Hope dealer.” Together, they tackle the pressing and often unspoken subject of how to help children grieve after losing someone to suicide. Drawing from her own personal experiences with loss, as well as her professional expertise, Dr. Ford shares practical insights on navigating the initial shock, understanding when to seek support, and the importance of honesty and routine for grieving children. The episode also guides parents and caregivers through age-appropriate ways to discuss suicide, key warning signs to watch for, and steps to take to prevent further tragedy. Whether you're supporting your own family or looking for ways to help others in your community, this heartfelt conversation provides wisdom, resources, and hope for one of life's most difficult journeys. Stay tuned as we break the silence and lift each other up through compassionate understanding and practical guidance. Highlights from This Episode: Dr. Ford's Personal Journey Dr. Ford shares her journey of loss, having experienced suicide in her immediate family. Out of both necessity and calling, she discovered a lack of practical resources to help parents guide grieving children, spurring her to write her latest book so that families don't have to walk this journey alone. Responding During the Shock Period In the immediate aftermath of suicide, parents and children alike often function in survival mode. Dr. Ford encourages leaning on supportive friends, family, and community during this overwhelming time and waiting for the shock to subside before rushing into counseling—unless ongoing dysfunction or distress signals a need for earlier intervention. When & How to Seek Help If daily tasks remain unmanageable for weeks or a child is overwhelmed by guilt, shame, or unrelenting questions about their loved one's death, it may be time to seek support—either through counseling or survivor support groups. Dr. Ford specifically recommends looking into resources from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, such as Survivors of Suicide (SOS) groups. Talking to Kids at Different Ages Dr. Ford advises honesty, using age-appropriate language. For younger children, simple explanations may be sufficient, while school-age children and teens require more detailed, open conversations. She stresses the importance of answering questions directly and reassuring children that they aren't to blame. Recognizing Warning Signs & Preventing Further Tragedy Those who have experienced suicide loss are at increased risk themselves. Watch for behavioral changes in children, such as withdrawal, acting out, or changes in eating and sleeping patterns. If you suspect a child is struggling, ask direct, caring questions and offer ongoing support. Don't hesitate to ask about suicidal thoughts and intent. Supporting Parents and Caregivers Dr. Ford emphasizes self-care for grieving parents—including maintaining routines for children, seeking support, and allowing children to grieve in their own way and time. Bringing trusted mentors and church community alongside your family can provide much-needed support—especially if children are hesitant to share the burden of their feelings with grieving parents. Resources for You Dr. Ford's latest book, “Through the Tears: Helping Children Grieve After Suicide Loss,” provides practical scripts, guides for different age groups, signs to watch for, and ways to honor lost loved ones. It is available on Amazon and at drfordwrites.com. A Final Word Grief after suicide is a long journey, but you and your child don't have to walk it alone. Share this episode or Dr. Ford's resources with anyone who needs it, and remember to take the time you and your family need to heal. We're thrilled to accompany you on this journey of faith, growth, and transformation. As always, we appreciate your support! Please subscribe and share this episode. Can depression be healed without antidepressants? Josh Trent welcomes Pixie Acia, Spiritual Wellness Coach, to the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 771, to share how nutraceuticals helped her transition off 15 years of antidepressants, why trauma shows up in our bodies until we face it, and how breathwork, community, and cycle-breaking practices can unlock healing far beyond pharmaceuticals. Nutraceuticals from Altrient (LivOn Labs) In order to repair the structural damage caused by a continual barrage of toxic substances and pathogens, your body requires a constant supply of phospholipids. Whilst humans can synthesise some phospholipid compounds, others are sourced from food. Phospholipids that are obtained from the diet are called ‘essential phospholipids'. The liposomes used in Altrient products are made from essential phospholipids that include a high percentage of Phosphatidylcholine (PC). These liposomes not only provide optimum protection and transport, but they also satisfy the body's need for PC, omega-6 fatty acids, and choline. Now Altrient has taken the power of LET out of the laboratory and put it into your hands. It's why Altrient products are so effective. High-performance nutrients delivering enhanced absorption! Try it for yourself In This Episode, Pixie Acia Uncovers: [01:10] Nutraceuticals: Natural + More Efficient than Anti-Depressants The role of nutraceuticals in treating depression. Why Pixie spent 15 years on depression medications. How liposomal applications help us absorb 80-90% of nutrients from a supplement. Why nutraceuticals provide clarity and allow us to feel our emotions more than antidepressants. How nutraceuticals affect both the brain and the gut. Why depression is a combination of trauma and imbalances in the brain. We can't heal from depression with just one practice. They help not just build the foundational blocks in the brain, but also in the gut, affecting the serotonin and giving you the essential support that it needs to not be depressed." — Pixie Acia "Your nervous system is looking for familiar situations to identify whether it's safe or not. When we're used to repressing it, we aren't listening to the body to know if we're safe or not. And then we'll end up finding ourselves in similar situations again." — Pixie Acia

Today we tackle the common issue of how parents should handle planned emancipation when their teenager carries one or more diagnoses like ADHD or Oppositional Defiant Disorder or Autism Spectrum Disorder or Dyslexia or Depression or Anxiety or Trauma etc. etc. etc. This question comes up a lot! Dr. Ken's take is clear and freeing—the diagnosis shapes how you coach but not whether you give freedoms. Parents can adjust their approach, offer tools, and expect some natural consequences, but lowering the bar only delays the growth they'll need when the world stops making accommodations. If you have a minute, please leave us a review. We love hearing listeners encouraging other listeners. You can order Dr. Ken's book "Feeding The Mouth That Bites You" here.Got questions or feedback? Grace is first generation Italian Australian. Her parents immigrated from Southern Italy to Australia when they were  young. Rosa and Alfredo, Grace's parents, met many years later in Australia and started their family of four girls.  Rosa was one of nine children and she was  fifteen when landing in Australia. Alfredo lost both his parents at five years old and had a rough childhood.  He was a victim of abuse and moved from house to house as a child. De Angeli reflects saying "he did the best he could with what he had."Grace insists "that it was a cultural thing" as to why her mother stayed throughout  many years of emotional, verbal and physical abuse. Eventually, Grace and her younger sister became targets as well.  It was always the fear and bullying tactic that their father used especially against their mom, Rosa. Grace says that her father would often scream at her mother "you either stay or you die" or "you leave, I'll kill you." So her mother stayed out of fear.  "We were all brought up with the fear that if we did something wrong we would be killed," remarks Grace. "When I think back to my childhood I wasn't protected by my mother, but she taught me who not to be when I grew up."One would think that this would take a real tole on Grace's life and her future. But the best news is that with the help of her husband and many others, Grace has learned how to transform her life and heal from her scars of her father plus how to beat Breast Cancer with many different treatments and therapies including Eastern and Western Medicines, mind over matter and the list goes on and on. She is a true inspiration. She declares "it doesn't matter where you are in your journey, whether stage 1 or stage 4 breast cancer OR any illness, you need to get things right in your soul and spirit, where you are your most authentic self." She continues, "it doesn't matter as long as you are honest and liberated within yourself, it doesn't matter what happens next."For a young woman who at twenty one years old had contemplated suicide, to becoming this force of nature to heal not only herself but help others on their individual journey is remarkable. There's so much more to this story so please do listen to the episode in it's entirety. Grace is emphatic when saying "we were put on this planet to be ourself. If you can be the best version of yourself, you've done it."To find Grace's podcast use on link below:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1552339592    "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. Many psychiatric labels—like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia—can obscure underlying biology, and symptom checklists often fail to explain or heal what's really going on. Emerging evidence reframes mental illness as a problem of brain energy, mitochondria, and inflammation—shaped by insulin signaling, circadian rhythm disruption, the gut–brain axis, toxins, infections, and nutrient status. Metabolic interventions such as ketogenic nutrition, already established for epilepsy, show promise for rebalancing neurotransmitters, lowering neuroinflammation, and improving overall brain function. With depression now a leading cause of disability, shifting from “manage the symptoms” to “fix the biology” could dramatically improve outcomes where standard drugs fall short. In this episode, Dr. Christopher Palmer, Dr. Todd LePine, Dr. Iain Campbell and I explore how rethinking mental illness as a metabolic and inflammatory disorder of the brain—rather than just a chemical imbalance—could transform the treatment and prevention of conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Dr. Chris Palmer is a psychiatrist and researcher working at the interface of metabolism and mental health. He is the Director of the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. For over 25 years, he has held leadership roles in psychiatric education, conducted research, and worked with people who have treatment-resistant mental illnesses. He has been pioneering the use of the medical ketogenic diet in the treatment of psychiatric disorders - conducting research in this area, treating patients, writing, and speaking around the world on this topic. More broadly, he is interested in the roles of metabolism and metabolic interventions on brain health. Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine's focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders.  Dr. lain Campbell is the first academic research fellow to specialise in Metabolic Psychiatry as the Baszucki Research Fellow in Metabolic Psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh. He has a PhD in Global Health from the University of Edinburgh and is a principal investigator on a pilot trial of a ketogenic diet for bipolar disorder. He is a workstream lead and co-investigator on the first publicly funded research hub for Metabolic Psychiatry, the UKRI Medical Research Council Hub for Metabolic Psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh. His research in metabolic psychiatry has been published in Nature press journals Molecular Psychiatry and Translational Psychiatry and presented at Mayo Clinic Grand Rounds and The Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress.  This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Are ChatGPT and other AI chatbots inducing psychosis? Or exacerbating it? Are people being hospitalized or even killed because the bots seem too human, too understanding, too lifelike? To be clear, the bots are not human. They are software. But they are so convincingly programmed to speak like people that users, especially ones who may already be having trouble discerning reality, begin to sense that the bot is alive and that the user somehow unlocked its sentience. Since the bots are also set up to be flattering, even sycophantic to the user, the connection is made even stronger. If live feels extremely heavy right now, you're not alone. I once had a conversation with a mentor around this topic about what to do when life is just heavy.  Sometimes we're weighed down because we aren't managing our thoughts well. Sometimes it's because we're in environments that don't serve us.  But other times, life is just heavy and no amount of mindset work or environment shifts seem to fix it right away. In those moments, the best thing we can do is support ourselves until the heaviness passes. In this episode, I share practical and compassionate ways to care for yourself when you feel overwhelmed. We'll talk about why stepping away from social media protects your mental space, and how serving others whether with a simple text or through volunteering can actually ease your own burdens.  You'll hear about the power of healthy community and why it's vital to resist the urge to isolate. I'll also share ideas for lighthearted activities that bring a sense of play, and small but powerful actions you can take for your body, like cooking a nourishing meal or going on a walk. We'll close by exploring gratitude practices, future-focused dreaming, and the importance of remembering that emotional states are temporary. Life isn't meant to feel easy all the time, but with the right tools, you can support yourself through the heavy seasons. Time Stamps: (2:02) Heavy Emotions This Week(6:02) The Extreme Recent Examples(9:11) Filling A Void Through Doom Scrolling(10:32) Doing Something For Someone Else(11:02) Get Around Community(16:07) Finding Playful Activities(23:42) Daydreaming About The Future---------------------Follow Abbe on IG: @Blowoutsbyabbeandmore---------------------Find Out More Information on Vital Spark Coaching---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. ---------------------Download Our FREE Metabolism-Boosting Workout Program---------------------Join the Women's Metabolism Secrets Facebook Community for 25+ videos teaching you how to start losing fat without hating your life!---------------------Click here to send me a message on Facebook and we'll see how I can help or what best free resources I can share!---------------------Interested in 1-on-1 Coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts? For many of us, “the hustle” has become a way of life. Long hours, endless responsibilities, and the constant pressure to do more often come at a cost—our health. Few people know this better than Umashnee Naidoo, who faced the heavy toll of burnout, weight gain, and depression before transforming her life through holistic healing. From Burnout to Breakdown Like so many professionals, Umashnee poured herself into her work. On the outside, she was driven and successful. But inside, the stress of hustle culture was taking its toll. The result was emotional exhaustion, severe depression, and a body carrying 60 extra pounds of weight. It wasn't just about how she looked—it was about how she felt. Every day became a struggle. Choosing a Different Path Umashnee realized that if she didn't make a change, she risked losing more than her health—she risked losing herself. That realization led her to embrace holistic health practices: yoga, meditation, and energy medicine. These weren't quick fixes, but powerful tools that helped her reconnect to her body, calm her mind, and begin the journey of true healing. Through consistency and self-discovery, Umashnee not only shed 60 pounds but also regained her joy, energy, and sense of purpose. Her story is proof that sustainable transformation happens when you address both the mind and the body. The Power of Mind-Body Healing What makes Umashnee's journey so impactful is her focus on the whole person. She learned that depression, weight gain, and burnout are often symptoms of deeper imbalances. By aligning her nutrition, movement, and mindset with her values, she was able to heal from the inside out. Today, she shares her knowledge and experience to help others reclaim their health and happiness. Her story is a reminder that true wellness isn't just about losing weight or following a diet—it's about creating harmony in your life. Lessons for All of Us There are three key takeaways from Umashnee's journey that anyone can apply: Listen to your body. Fatigue, stress, and weight gain are signals, not just inconveniences. Prioritize mental health. Depression and burnout require attention, compassion, and care—not silence. Small, consistent changes matter. Yoga, meditation, and mindful eating create long-term transformation when practiced regularly. Connect with Umashnee If you're ready to step off the treadmill of hustle culture and into a healthier, more balanced life, you'll find Umashnee's work inspiring and practical.

Born out of the blood and chaos of the Depression and Prohibition era, the home is tied forever to the infamous Barker family—criminals who left a trail of fear, violence, and trauma across the country. The Barkers weren't petty thieves. They were a notorious gang responsible for bank robberies, kidnappings, and brutal crimes that shook law enforcement to its core.
