Dr. Peter Lidsky posits that aging is not merely a process of accumulating damages, as commonly believed, but rather a programmed adaptation akin to a part of the immune system. His hypothesis suggests that aging evolved to eliminate older individuals who might be susceptible to severe chronic diseases. Matthew and Lowell discussed the development of a new DNA targeting intervention to clear senescent cells. They highlighted the unique approach of Oisin, which targets cells based on their transcriptional activity rather than their appearance or behavior. The conversation also touched on the challenges of DNA delivery, the potential for future adaptations to target new pathways, and the advantages of their non-viral vector. Matthew shared his journey into biotech, developing an app store for the human body, and the shift in the field's perception of his idea. The conversation ended with a discussion on the potential of using machine learning and control in building therapies that would have been difficult in the past. https://youtu.be/2JKgtNWXO1c PODCAST INFO: The Learning With Lowell show is a series for the everyday mammal. Welcome painter and "recovering adman" and Chicago native Lowell Thompson to In-Focus Podcast Number 58. Lowell began creating ads and commercials for some of America’s biggest ad agencies and companies. He was one of the first African Americans hired into a top 10 ad agency following the riots after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968. Lowell Thompson refers to himself as a “recovering adman” because he spent so much of his spent career in advertising. He began to transition from advertising to writing and painting in the late 90s because, as he says, he was, "partially prompted by the return of racism into advertising. In fact, my first published writing was an expose I did on the subject in 1993 entitled The Invisible Man in the Gray Flannel Suit." It was around the year 2000 that he began painting seriously again. In 2014, he was the subject of an article in the Chicago Tribune called Lowell Thompson on 'RaceMan Answers'. Lowell is also the author of African Americans in Chicago (Images of America) Lowell is connected to the Southcoast through his acquaintance with Ron Fortier and, New Bedford native and renowned photographer Anthony Barboza. He lives in and maintains his studio in Chicago, Illinois. Listen in on his conversation as The Artist Index’s host, Ron Fortier delves more into Lowell’s life, his work, and his political and cultural projects. Music courtesy of www.bensound.com
Cloud computing offers a business the prospect of efficiency and savings by improving data storage capabilities and outsourcing computing resources that a business need not build for itself. But when data moves to the cloud, does this raise new troubles and make legal compliance more difficult? Or can it minimize risk and increase compliance with a dizzying array of global data privacy laws? How do cloud computing and data privacy compliance intersect? Lowell Thompson of Genity, a US-based company, discusses in this podcast how a cloud computing service can address this challenge and opportunity. Using encryption technology, Genity offers what it describes as data security by default that aims to bypass data privacy laws of Europe, California, Canada, and other countries. Major data breaches such as Equifax (2017) revealed weaknesses in internal business systems, in that case exposing sensitive personal information of 147 million people from several countries. As a business focused on data, a cloud provider must be attentive to cybersecurity and differing data privacy rules and so may be able to provide greater security and compliance than many businesses can expect of their own personnel and system. When a business contracts with a cloud computing services provider, it should consider several key issues: consent of data subjects, security, control and supervision, and server location. If a server resides in a jurisdiction that requires data localization or requires sharing data with government authorities, this can complicate a business’ data issues. The contract between a business and cloud services provider merits careful review to determine whether proceeding minimizes or increases the risk of data breach and inadvertent violations of differing state and national data privacy rules. Cloud computing has its benefits. But you don’t want a cloud to turn dark with thunder and lightning. Explore the intersection of cloud computing and data privacy in this podcast. Straight from a Scientist Medical Research Education and Discussion Podcast
Another special episode for the SFS podcast this week: a collaborative show between Lowell Thompson, the host of the Learning with Lowell Podcast, and Connor from Straight from a Scientist. Listen in to hear a relaxed discussion about the motivations behind and the ups and downs of podcasting. We also talk about our backgrounds, personal histories and interests, and cool things planned for both the Learning with Lowell and Straight from a Scientist Podcasts! About Lowell After being in the ICU and the ER for a few years, struggling to survive, Lowell slowly got better. And after paying off the near-crippling medical and college debt, he decided to create something to inspire, educate, and highlight great science going on every day. So he made a podcast with those goals in mind. He quickly achieved those goals, inspiring listeners to learn coding, A.I., synthetic biology, and more. In addition he has helped guests with opportunities to find jobs, get promoted, obtain funding for their projects or startups, inspire others, and have a chance to talk about their work. Find Lowell on Twitter and keep an eye out for his soon-to-be-launched YouTube channel. Listen to the Learning With Lowell podcast! Mentioned in the Podcast: Listen to our episode 30: Breaking the Vicious Cycle of Pain and Addiction with Waylin Yu. Listen to our interviews from ComSciCon with Suzanne Hartley, Stephanie Teeter, Ashish Kapoor, and Aaron Devanathan. Learn about the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis with our infographic, review breakdown, and episode with Miguel Mateas. Any other questions? Let us know! We appreciate your feedback. Neural Implant podcast - the people behind Brain-Machine Interface revolutions
I've been in contact with Lowell Thompson of the Learning with Lowell podcast for some time and have become a fan of his work. He also covers many things Biotech and Science sometimes even touching upon the Brain Machine Interface space. In this joint episode which is being published on both shows, we talk about some of the cool interviews and technologies we have learned about on the show. This may be a recurring episode with Lowell coming on once in a while to share what he has learned.
