They were visionaries ahead of their time and, although AI took several more years before becoming a viable product, the experience of scaling databases would later prove valuable and applicable in blockchain world. As a result, Near Protocol aims to become the infrastructure layer for AI apps and the agentic economy. This project, called Community Commons, will serve as both a hub for local businesses and a space for community-building activities. The first floor will feature a gathering space, coffee shop, and retail area, while the upper floors will house luxury furnished apartments for short-term rentals.Jenny explains her motivation: “I've believed for a while that it's really important to create a place-based ecosystem to grow this movement to move community capital into small business.” She has already raised $2.5 million for the project but is turning to crowdfunding to close the final gap. What makes this project stand out is its intentional focus on Baltimore. Today JPMorgan Chase is a juggernaut — the most systemically important non-governmental financial institution in the world, with over twice the market capitalization of its nearest competitor. But it certainly wasn't always this way! Jamie takes us from his career restart at the struggling Chicago-based Bank One through how he transformed that platform into the foundation for the modern JPMorgan Chase. We dive into the “fortress balance sheet” strategy that has defined his tenure, and cover blow-by-blow Jamie's approach to the Great Financial Crisis, Bear Stearns, WaMu, First Republic and more. From reducing manufacturing costs to streamlining overseas shipping and optimizing Facebook ads, AI is transforming the way we run every part of our business. Therapywear launched the world's first infrared heated hoodie designed for neck, back, and shoulder pain relief in late 2024. Despite early success with sold-out inventory and strong customer reviews, we faced bottlenecks in manufacturing expenses and lengthy overseas shipping delays. By investing in ChatGPT Pro's AI capabilities, including live web browsing and powerful data synthesis, we uploaded every detail from Shopify sales, Meta ad campaigns, QuickBooks finances, product patents, and more. This enabled us to get AI-driven insights and solutions faster than ever. Raising an Inside Round Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. Most startup fundraisers seek capital from outside investors who are new to the round. This brings new investors into the cap table. There are rounds in which the existing investors fund the startup. This is often done for bridge rounds. Instead of raising the next major round, the startup raises additional capital to prepare for the next major round. This often happens between the seed and Series A, which is a bigger step compared to other rounds. An inside round often occurs around an important milestone, such as reaching cash flow positive or achieving a specific metric. They are often smaller fundraisers in terms of amount. They focus on existing investors. The goal is often a key metric needed to raise the next round. They are often priced at the same valuation as the last one. It's easier to raise a small amount from the existing investors than from outside investors. Inside rounds are common and don't necessarily indicate the startup is in trouble. Consider an inside round for your startup.   Thank you for joining us for the Startup Funding Espresso where we help startups and investors connect for funding. Let's go startup something today. _______________________________________________________ For more episodes from Investor Connect, please visit the site at:   Check out our other podcasts here:   For Investors check out:   For Startups check out:   For eGuides check out:   For upcoming Events, check out    For Feedback please contact info@tencapital.group    Please , share, and leave a review. She holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and worked as a Financial Analyst at Morgan Stanley before co-founding Access Trips, the travel startup that led her to creating Wildfire.During her chat with Silvan, Victoria reflected back on the values which sustained Wildfire and which drive Prisma nowadays. She highlighted the importance of hiring your first 15-25 employees extremely carefully, as these people will set the tone for future hires. She also emphasized the competitive advantage that a strong company culture can bring, since execution often matters more for success than merely having a great business idea.Victoria argued that incentives like bonuses should complement but never replace a strong culture, and she encouraged Swiss entrepreneurs to learn from their American counterparts: it never pays off to be too humble. The cover portrait was edited by www.smartportrait.io.‍Don't forget to give us a follow on Instagram, Linkedin, TikTok, and Youtube so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. Last September, we hosted a 21 Hats Brainstorm podcast episode in which BaLeigh Waldrop told us that she was considering buying the family business from her parents. BaLeigh, who has been serving as chief financial officer of the Miller Waldrop furniture business that her great grandfather started, recognized that she was being offered a remarkable opportunity, but she had some concerns. Sales have been off of late, the business is predominantly brick-and-mortar, and most importantly, she would have to work out an ownership structure with her younger brother. The 21 Hats crew of owners and entrepreneurs who joined the brainstorm asked a lot of good questions and offered smart suggestions. “I think what's actually incredibly hard about this whole thing is that I love it,” says BaLeigh. “I love wearing the different hats. I love owning a business in a small community.” We left it that BaLeigh would get back to us once she'd figured things out. In this week's episode, she returns to tell Jay Goltz and the rest of us what she's decided.

In this episode of Superpowers for Good, guest Kevin Shird shared a profound perspective on how mental health challenges contribute to poor decision-making and the cycle of incarceration. Kevin, a professor, author, and advocate, is no stranger to the justice system, having experienced it firsthand. Now, he's using his story to create a roadmap for change.Kevin explained that unresolved trauma often plays a central role in the repetitive cycles of poor choices many individuals make post-incarceration. “Poor choices are actually tied to unresolved trauma,” he stated, adding, “when trauma is unresolved, there's a propensity for continuing this hamster wheel of just poor choices after poor choices.” His insights shed light on a key issue: the need for better mental health care within prisons to address these deeply rooted issues before individuals reenter society.Kevin shared the heartbreaking story of a friend he met while incarcerated—a man who initially served a short sentence but, after his release, committed a double murder and now faces life in prison. The tragedy, Kevin emphasized, could have been prevented with better mental health support during his friend's incarceration. “Hurt people hurt people,” Kevin explained. “When people aren't well... sometimes their struggles land in our laps.”Kevin advocates for placing licensed clinical social workers inside prisons as a proactive solution. He pointed out that 95% of incarcerated individuals will eventually return to society, becoming our neighbors, coworkers, and community members. By providing mental health support behind prison walls, he believes we can reduce recidivism, enhance public safety, and foster healthier communities. This episode reinforced the urgent need for systemic reform to prioritize mental health care in the criminal justice system. Kevin's work, including his book A Life for a Life, serves as both a call to action and a source of hope. Through his advocacy, he's demonstrating how addressing trauma can transform lives and break cycles of harm.By highlighting these issues, Kevin reminded us that change is possible—and it starts with seeing the humanity in everyone.tl;dr:Kevin Shird shares how unresolved trauma drives recidivism and advocates for better mental health care.He highlights the importance of placing licensed social workers in prisons to support incarcerated individuals.Kevin recounts a tragic story to illustrate how unaddressed trauma leads to devastating consequences. He explains his superpower of authentic connection and how storytelling fosters healing and understanding.Kevin encourages vulnerability to build deeper relationships and drive meaningful change in the world. How to Develop Authentic Connection As a SuperpowerKevin Shird's superpower lies in his ability to authentically connect with people through storytelling. “I pride myself on just being able to build real relationships,” Kevin explained. He emphasized the importance of “removing the mask” to connect with others on a deeper, human level. By sharing his vulnerabilities and personal experiences, Kevin creates bonds that inspire healing and understanding. “Everybody has a story,” he said, reminding us that even when our struggles differ, they are all significant and worthy of empathy.Kevin recounted how sharing a vulnerable story about his father's alcoholism in his first book led to powerful connections with readers. Despite initial embarrassment, he wrote about his father's addiction, and the response was overwhelming. Readers reached out to share their own experiences with addicted family members, often in tears. This demonstrated how his authenticity in storytelling inspired others to confront and heal from their own struggles.Tips for Developing Authentic Connection:Remove the emotional “mask” and embrace vulnerability.Recognize that everyone has a story, even if it differs from yours.Focus on building genuine human connections by listening and empathizing.Use storytelling to create shared experiences and inspire others.By following Kevin's example and advice, you can make authentic connection a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses.
