Not too long ago, the United States Government confirmed the existence of UFOs, but we had too much going on to care at the time. Maybe we needed more concrete evidence. What if ET arrived on our doorstep? But he was already dead? That's the premise of Alienated, the new Comixology Original written, colored, and lettered by Taki Soma, with art by John Broglia and covers by Michael Avon Oeming. Alienated begins with one of our great mysteries solved, but done so in a horrifying, unsatisfying way. Alien arrival on Earth shakes society's core, spreading panic and existential dread...until people get distracted and move on to the next day's news cycle. There's only one problem: a single Alien survives, and it's on one disconnected family to keep them breathing. We're ecstatic to have creative couple Taki Soma and Michael Avon Oeming on the podcast this week. We discuss how storytelling impacts every element of their relationship, their fascination with UFO mythology, and how Taki Soma's graphic novel memoir Sleeping While Standing impacted her method of creating fiction. The first four Alienated issues are out now, and the fifth issue will arrive on August 5th. Please follow Taki Soma on Blue Sky and Instagram, and follow Michael Avon Oeming on Blue Sky, Instagram, and his Website. This Week's Sponsor We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Within its pages is a whole universe of characters, from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog to Rogue Trooper, Shakara, Halo Jones, and the poor sods slogging across the Cursed Earth in The Helltrekkers. Get a print subscription at your door every week - and the first issue is free! Or subscribe digitally, get free back issues, and download DRM-free copies of each issue for just $9 a month. That's 128 pages of incredible monthly comics for less than $10. This July, IDW Publishing's Eisner-nominated cozy horror hit series returns in Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring #1. Superstar Cartoonist Patrick Horvath's delightfully twisted tale about an anthropomorphic serial killer bear is returning to comic shops for a new story that is guaranteed to shock readers. Return to the seemingly idealistic suburban town of Woodbrook as Samantha, the bloodlusting brown bear, got away with her crimes and is now the town's one and only serial killer. Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring #1 is out now from IDW Publishing. This July, one of the greatest creator-owned comic series of all time begins a powerful new chapter! From Oni Press, return to the Eisner-nominated world of The Sixth Gun as creators Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt reunite for The Sixth Gun: Battle for the Six #1 – an extra-sized comics' event told across three prestige format issues. The Sixth Gun is about to be Reborn anew - as it has been countless times across the centuries. This time, however, a brigade of familiar fighters is ready and waiting to challenge a secret cabal. The Sixth Gun: Battle for the Six #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on July 23rd. Sam Parfitt is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of The True Athlete Project. He holds an MSc in Sport Policy, Management and International Development from the University of Edinburgh, where he then became an associate tutor. His dissertation focused on the role of sport coaches as social change-makers, basing his research at The Crags Centre - a community sports center in an area of high deprivation in Scotland, where Sam was the sport-for-wellbeing manager. Sam is a certified mindfulness teacher and a USPTA professional tennis coach, with experience coaching all ages and standards - from total beginners to internationally-ranked juniors. A former tennis player, Parfitt won the 2006 London Youth Games and three British Tour doubles titles before moving to the United States in 2009 on a division one college tennis scholarship where he became a two-time All American Scholar Athlete. While Sam suffered with much ill health during his time in the States, Sam endeavored to use his experiences in sport - both positive and negative - to help others. His academic work centered around sport and identity, and he became intimately involved in establishing projects which used sport as an agent for social change. Thus, the True Athlete Project was born. In this episode, Jim Tew welcomes back Anne Frey of Betterbee to unpack the troubling die-offs many beekeepers experienced this past winter and spring. From unexplained colony declines to puzzling symptoms that didn't respond to brood boosts or pollen patties, Jim and Anne share firsthand observations of a season marked by confusion, frustration, and difficult decisions. Anne describes colonies that made it through winter only to slowly spiral down, despite repeated efforts to revive them. The conversation touches on suspected varroa mite damage, potential amitraz resistance, and the challenge of diagnosing problems when traditional treatments and responses don't seem to work. Together, they reflect on the toll that repeated losses take—not just on operations, but on beekeepers' morale. The discussion also transitions into Anne's mentorship of a new beekeeper at Betterbee. With warmth and honesty, she highlights the challenges of training someone new in a dynamic, seasonal environment where yesterday's good practice may not apply tomorrow. Jim and Anne reflect on the evolving nature of beekeeping, the importance of teaching at the right pace, and why no year—no hive—is ever the same. ______________________ Thanks to Betterbee for sponsoring today's episode. What if having physical interactions with the Earth was an honoring of your body? And of the Earth. Our bodies are made of the Earth and have a connection to it beyond what you can imagine. Some people feel earthquakes with their bodies, or know when the dermis of the Earth is desperate for water. Others come alive during Spring and go to resting in the Winter because they are so in sync with the Earth cycles. There are many other physical acknowledgments that bodies have which tie directly to the Earth, yet we don't always recognize that is what is occurring. Tribes of old used to have a communion and an honouring of the Earth that has been forgotten by most. However in a world that pushes us to do more, produce more, work more it can feel impossible to have such a connection and honouring. But what if it is easier than you think? Join me in the Curious Universe and let's explore.

I spoke with Dio Kaufman, a tenant rights advocate and activist who was arrested at the public hearing during their comments, about the events of the public hearing, the effect this ordinance will have on the homeless population, and how this law could be used to target protesters in Saratoga.

The conversation then shifted to the significant Rockland Road project, which promises to eliminate train-related traffic delays. Ken anticipated the Rockland Road bridge to open before the summer's end, a notable achievement given its original Spring 2026 completion date. Discussion also addressed the extensive widening of Interstate 81 in Strasburg, set for completion by fall 2028. Ken pointed out the complexities of this $59 million project, encompassing four miles of southbound expansion, with additional bridge replacements over Cedar Creek and the CSX railway. Beyond these specific projects, the duo discussed the broader I-81 Corridor Improvement Program. Ken shared insights into upcoming public meetings aimed at gathering feedback on potential solutions for congestion and safety issues along this vital corridor. The balance between public input and comprehensive traffic studies aims to refine and prioritize future improvements. The discussion concluded with updates on other key projects, including the Old Charlestown Road Bridge replacement and the dissemination of information via VDOT's website and social media channels. Ken reassured listeners of VDOT's commitment to transparency and community involvement in their ongoing and upcoming works.

On Humans is back from the break! To mark the summer heat, here is a two-part series on how climate has shaped the human story. In next week's episodes, we will explore the role of water and weather in the origins of European colonialism. But today, we start by crawling deeper into the past: to the origins of humanity itself. In this episode, Yale professor Jessica Thompson helps us navigate one of the most influential ideas in human evolution: that an ancient climate change pushed our ancestors out of the jungle, onto the savanna, and eventually toward big brains, meat-eating, and tool use. This is a captivating story. It has been mentioned many times on the show. But do the details hold up?What follows is a sweeping account of human origins, which nuances — but does not reject — the grand arc explored in The Origins of Humankind series. This is a story about a climate that has never remained steady. It serves as a poignant reminder of the weather's power to shape human destiny. But it's also a story about human resilience and our capacity, from the very beginning, to defy the iron laws of ecology. Enjoy!Thoughts about the episode? Share them at OnHumans.Substack.com. Bruce Springsteen was keenly aware and excited by the sounds of the CBGBs scene during the Seventies. With his own bands, the Boss performed in the same venues associated with punk rock and ultimately wrote songs for Patti Smith and the Ramones. Yet Springsteen's sound has remained distinct from punk rock as it emanated from New York. In the seventh episode of Soundscapes NYC, host Ryan Purcell talks with Bruce Springsteen biographer Jim Cullen and Melissa Ziobro the head curator of the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University about Springsteen's complicated relationship with punk rock in 1970s New York. As an NJ native, the Boss was a so-called “Bridge-and-Tunnel-Boy” but that socio-cultural infrastructure worked both ways. By the end of the Seventies, Springsteen did not need to travel to New York to engage with the punk sound. Punk culture was traveling to Asbury Park, NJ.  Jim Cullen is a historian of American popular culture and has taught at several colleges and universities, including Harvard, Brown, and Sarah Lawrence College. He was a longtime faculty member and History Department chair at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York before moving to the recently founded Greenwich Country Day School in 2020. Cullen is the author of multiple award-winning book books on music including Born in the USA: Bruce Springsteen and the American Tradition (Harper Collins, 1997). His latest book, Bridge and Tunnel Boys: Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and Metropolitan Sound of the American Century (Rutgers University, 2023), compares the musical careers of Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen.  Melissa Ziobro is a Professor of Public History at Monmouth University where she is currently the Head Curator for the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music. Former editor of New Jersey Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal, Ziobro is deeply committed to documenting New Jersey history with the broader context of the American story. High above the meeting point of two mighty rivers, where the Susquehanna splits into its North and West Branches, stands Shikellamy State Park. Perched on a forested bluff in central Pennsylvania, this park offers more than just scenic overlooks. It's a gateway to the natural beauty, cultural history and outdoor adventure of the Susquehanna River Valley. Shikellamy State Park is a place where geography and heritage intersect. The story of the park and the story of the Native American tribes that called it home are forever intertwined. In the 1700s, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy took control of the surrounding area.  Nearby Shamokin – whose name means “the Place of Eels” - was one of the most important Indigenous cities in Pennsylvania during that time. The resident Haudenosaunee welcomed tribes including the Conestoga, Conoy, Nanticoke, Tuscarora, Lenape and the Shawnee displaced by settlers. The French and Indian War, the American Revolution and the purchase of the land by Commonwealth of Pennsylvania forced many of the Indigenous people in Pennsylvania to move west or north. The park – which is made of up two separate sections – held numerous purposes over the years. It was an air strip, homestead, farm, “pleasure ground,” amusement center and hotel before becoming a state park in 1962. Shikellamy State Park's two distinct areas is the marina along the river in Sunbury, and the scenic overlook high on the bluff in Northumberland. Each area offers a different experience—from peaceful boating and fishing on the Susquehanna to breathtaking vistas of the valley below. It's a rare park that invites you both to explore water-level wilderness and to rise above it all for a bird's-eye view.Shikellamy's unique location has made it a hub for both recreation and reflection—a place where families come to picnic, hikers go to find solitude, and birders gather to catch sight of bald eagles soaring over the river. But Shikellamy isn't just about quiet beauty—it's about connection. The park sits at the crossroads of culture, drawing in people from nearby towns and beyond. Whether it's for community events, wildlife watching at the overlook, or simply taking a moment to breathe in the valley air, visitors come here to feel grounded. There's a rhythm to this park—seasonal, historical, natural. Spring floods give way to summer sun, and autumn paints the hills in brilliant reds and golds. And in every season, Shikellamy offers a chance to see the world from a new perspective—both literally and figuratively. On this episode, I speak with Ben Bender.
