But why? With all of the animals out there to choose from, the harvesting of fruits and vegetables they could've placed on an altar… why human sacrifice? (Why Human Sacrifice?) *** You're in a battle, you've had several horses shot out from under you, and suddenly someone points out that you've lost your leg. How do you respond to that? Whatever your answer, you probably wouldn't be as suave about it as Lord Uxbridge was. (The Strange Tale of Lord Uxbridge's Leg) *** Cornering the market in heroin and cocaine trafficking, Vito Rizzuto's mafia family dominated Montreal until his death in December 2013. Trevor is back for a second podcast episode with Luis to discuss parenting in the age of social media and screen prevalence.  The hard first question is, what social media and screen patterns do the parents model?  Do parents use their own free time to disassociate and isolate with the screen? Do parents use the screen as a babysitter for their child/ren, so that they have time to resource themselves? When parents live an authentic, meaningful and satisfied life, they can connect to their child with playfulness and curiosity. Trevor explains how to help break a child's screen pattern through what he calls wedging change. He gives several free, easy, and accessible ways to connect with children, and it's not through talking. Remember, perfection is not the goal, connection is. You do not need to figure out how to do this in isolation!Rooted Futures information:Website: https://rootedfutures.org/Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/rootedfuturesmentoring?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==Register here for the upcoming August 9th webinar, "Supporting Boys Through Puberty: Navigating P*rnography, Hormones & Isolation". As reported by The Beat, the Eisner-winning comics journalism website (hell yeah), Comic Book Couples Counselingkinda kicked off San Diego Comic-Con International this year with our Live Podcast Recording at Now or Never Comics in Downtown San Diego. On Tuesday, July 22nd, we invited superstar cartoonist Daniel Warren Johnson to chat with us after a signing at the shop. With The Moon Is Following Us recently concluded, his final issues of Transformerson their way, and the Kickstarter launch of his behemoth art book, we had a lot to discuss with DWJ. Today's episode presents the audio from our discussion in full, complete with questions from the audience, and a serious discussion of where The Moon Is Following Us took its readers, without spoiling the narrative for those who have not finished the comic. We also explore Daniel Warren Johnson's relationship with comic book shops and comic conventions. What is his ideal store? Is San Diego different from the many other comic conventions across this country? I'd done my whole adult life with my Karen, the only woman I ever needed. Suddenly, I had to figure out how to do the rest of my life without her. That Sunday night, we sat in the bleachers at our local football stadium and we watched our grandson graduate from high school as valedictorian and he gave a faith-filled valedictory message. Monday afternoon, she was gone. Wrapped in this huddle of sobs with our three adult children, I just choked out the words, "It hurts so bad." It really does. After some time, I'd walk into our living room, I'd still instinctively look for that beautiful hair. I called it her "crown of glory" as she sat in her favorite blue chair. I would go to make that oatmeal that she loved for breakfast. I turn to tell her about a conversation or situation and to hear her trademark laugh over my dumb jokes. Our four-year-old grandson said it all the first time he ran into our living room and saw her chair empty. He just ran back to his mommy and said, "Mommy, you were right. She's not here." No, she's not, and she won't be again. I probably shed more tears in those weeks than I've shed the rest of my life. But I have a story to tell. Actually, it's the Story that I've tried to tell folks my whole adult life. And suddenly I was living its ultimate validation. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "A Shattered Heart, A Certain Hope." Everything I've ever believed, everything I've ever taught about my Jesus is true! Everything that my death-crushing Savior promised, I can tell you, He delivers in the darkest, most devastating days of my life! He said of those who have put their total trust in His death on the cross for their sins, and this is in our word for today from the Word of God in John 14:19. He said, "Because I live, you will live also." Because Karen's Savior is alive, so is this woman I love. In God's own words, we have "a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Peter 1:3). I'm not talking about some "cross your fingers" hope. This is living hope. Hope is a Person - Jesus. He trampled death as He blasted out of His grave on Easter morning. The hope that is holding my heart together is as sure as our hope that spring will follow a seemingly endless winter. Spring is a sure thing. So is heaven for those who've pinned all their hopes on the One who died so we could go there. As much as I love Karen, she is now with the One who loves her the most. This amazing Jesus has got my Karen. And He's got me. I can tell you that by the peace that has lasted across the years now. That peace, along with that certain hope of a forever spring after this cold winter, is a powerful counterbalance on that scale that is so weighed down by grief. Through all my darkest hours, through my loneliest moments, the peace has never been shaken. Oh, this Jesus I've talked about, that I've written about, I've believed in all these years has come closer and become more real to me than ever before. He promised He would be, as the Bible says, "close to the brokenhearted" (Psalm 34:18). He really, really is. When you walk through the valley of the shadow, you've got to have Jesus to go there. And when you walk across that final frontier beyond our death, you've got to know you belong to Jesus. If you're not sure of that, would you please make this the day you get that settled? Tell Him, "Jesus, what you died for was me. I am yours. You're alive! I want you to live in me." Check out our website - you can find there how to be sure you belong to Him. That website is ANewStory.com. Look, I'm in the biggest storm of my life - the Cat 5 hurricane, the EF-5 tornado. Jesus is my safe room. Is He yours? He's stronger than the storm. The Bible says, "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure" (Hebrews 6:19). And my friend, The Anchor holds.

Whitney Burnside built her résumé at some of the best breweries in the Pacific Northwest, so when she and her husband Doug—a celebrated chef—embarked on their post-COVID project of working together on a brewpub they dubbed Grand Fir (https://www.grandfirbrewing.com), the Portland beer world grew excited (we did too—for more, see Kate Bernot's case study on Grand Fir (https://brewingindustryguide.com/case-study-grand-fir) from our Spring 2024 issue of the Brewing Industry Guide). Now, not yet three years old but with three World Beer Cup medals and three Great American Beer Festival medals under their belt, Grand Fir continues to garner attention for remarkable beer. Burnside loves hoppy beers with personality, and the brewpub and beers themselves ooze character, with defining forest flavor and aroma notes anchoring wider exploration. This conversation centers on West Coast and contemporary American IPA, with a focus on how Burnside often uses large blends of hops to build layers of character. Along the way, she discusses: building ultra-lean, 1.5°P FG West Coast IPA with intense hop character blending base malts for color and body in smaller hoppy beers differentiating between “traditional American” and “West Coast” IPA using classic hops in modern formats selecting malt to support the strong flavors of New Zealand hops constructing nuanced hop blends with five or more varieties And more. In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Peter Beinart speaks with UC Berkeley History Professor Ussama Makdisi, who was personally named and targeted by Members of Congress in the recent House of Representatives hearing ostensibly on antisemitism in higher education. Beinart and Makdisi discuss the "surreal" experience of being denounced in Congress as well as the truth and power of the widespread mobilization of people from a wide range of backgrounds, faiths, and generations calling for justice and an end to the genocide in Gaza. They also discuss the long and relatively under-researched history of interconnections among Muslims, Christians, and Jewish communities in the Middle East, the importance of reading history, and the shocking brutality of the genocide in Gaza. As they close their conversation, Makdisi asserts that the urgent and essential task is to make sense of the world in terms that "humanize rather than dehumanize, historicize rather than dehistoricize, advocate for justice and equality rather than ethno-religious supremacy of any sort."  Dr. Ussama Makdisi is Professor of History and Chancellor's Chair at the University of California Berkeley. He was previously Professor of History and the first holder of the Arab-American Educational Foundation Chair of Arab Studies at Rice University in Houston.  During AY 2019-2020, Professor Makdisi was a Visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley in the Department of History. Makdisi was awarded the Berlin Prize and spent the Spring 2018 semester as a Fellow at the American Academy of Berlin. Imagine experiencing that joyful moment. Feel the smiles, peace, and lightness it brings. Let yourself fully connect with the positive emotions. As you reflect, silently say to yourself, “May my joy and my happiness increase.” Allow this intention to sink into your heart. Bring to mind someone in your life who is experiencing happiness or success. Picture them in their joyful state. In your mind, say to them, “May your joy and happiness increase.” Or, “I'm happy for your happiness. May your happiness continue.” Remind yourself that joy is limitless, like the stars in the universe. Celebrating the joy of others enhances your own happiness. "“So many guys look in the mirror and don't recognise themselves anymore. Step one is taking back your physicality.”In this energising and brutally honest episode, we sit down with Rory Williams (@rory_strongdad)— fitness coach, father of two, and creator of the “Strong Dad” movement—to explore what it really means to be a modern father. Rory opens up about the pressures dads face today: being present, being providers, and being strong—mentally, emotionally, and physically. We discuss the silent struggles of fatherhood: lack of support, loneliness, and society's limited celebration of committed dads. Rory shares practical tools for reclaiming your physicality and identity through strength training, early-morning routines, and daily habits—without sacrificing your role as a present, engaged parent. He also reveals how he grew his social media presence from 7k to over 80k in under a year by speaking directly to modern fathers with raw honesty and clean storytelling. If you're a dad who's ever felt lost, exhausted, or just wants to get back on track—physically or mentally—this episode offers powerful motivation, useful strategies, and a reminder that you're not alone.-WANT TO BE A YOGA TEACHER? - training in London, UK every Spring and Fall at triyoga Camden - https://tr.ee/1UILsE-WANT TO RETREAT WITH ME? - next stop, a Lake District castle - https://tr.ee/t4NViA-MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW US …@adamhusler - https://tr.ee/b8QKyF@honestlyunbalanced - https://tr.ee/i1PXpT @iamhollyhusler - https://tr.ee/0ORJPX-PERKS FOR YOU10% off Liforme yoga mats with code HUSLER10 - https://tr.ee/PEju3010% off expert validated wellbeing brand at Healf via this link - https://tr.ee/dPMj2Y 10% off Colorful Standard clothing with code ADAMHUSLERCS10 - https://tr.ee/R1ugsk20% off Vivobarefoot shoes with code HUSLER20 - https://tr.ee/3Hs8kU5% off Nurosym vagus nerve stimulation device with code ADAMH5 https://tr.ee/CCbg8x25% off our online studio full of yoga, sound and meditation, with code HONEST25 (25% off single 12 month membership or reoccurring monthly membership until cancellation) - https://tr.ee/GCQdTB

You don't need to be told this: San Diego Comic-Con International is a comic convention unlike any other in the world. As yearly attendees, it's our favorite time of the year at our favorite place on the planet, but what does such a colossal gathering of geekdoms truly mean for a publisher, and how can a company raise its voice above a million other competing screams? We presented these questions to Oni Press Publisher and President Hunter Gorinson, as well as Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn. Somehow, they're madly in love with SDCC, and we're eager to share with you the Oni Press 2025 Comic-Con battle plan. From their words, you can form your path to conquering Comic-Con. This year marks the third anniversary of Hunter Gorinson and Sierra Hahn's time at Oni Press. You've undoubtedly noticed, they've been extremely productive. Beyond recent partnerships with EC and the NacelleVerse, they've recently announced dealings with Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah, and Josh C. Waller's SpectreVision. High Strangeness is a five-part experiment in sequential storytelling, featuring firsthand accounts of real paranormal encounters, guided by creators such as Chris Condon, Christopher Cantwell, Christian Ward, Dave Chisholm, Zac Thompson, and Cecil Castellucci. Say no more, we're in. We also discuss the recently announced Crownsville from Rodney Barnes and Elia Bonetti. This supernatural twist on true-life horror is precisely what you want from the co-creator of Killadelphia, and it's guaranteed to stir profound emotions in any contemporary reader. Hunter Gorinson and Sierra Hahn are very excited for folks to discover what Barnes and Bonetti are brewing with this one. Most importantly, our conversation puts you on the showfloor at San Diego Comic-Con as a publisher. The stakes are as high as the excitement that runs down every aisle. Whether you want to attend SDCC as a guest or a creator, our chat with Gorinson and Hahn will get you strategizing your own Comic-Con mission statement. Make sure you're following Oni Press on their Website, Blue Sky, and Instagram. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right—but still stuck in a dry place—this episode is your reminder that the desert is not your destiny. God specializes in showing up with supernatural provision, unexpected breakthrough, and refreshing where there's been nothing but drought. From Isaiah 41 to Numbers 21, Scripture shows us that God brings rivers to barren heights, fountains to valleys, and water where there's been no sign of rain. Whether you're navigating burnout, waiting on healing, or feeling forgotten—this is your prophetic invitation to believe again. It's time to speak to the dry ground. It's time to say: “Spring up, O well.” Water is coming.   Are you ready to stop shrinking and start walking in the fullness of who God says you are? Inside Courage Co., we train worshippers and warriors to walk by faith, rise in identity, and thrive in every season. It's not just a community—it's a movement. Today, we begin our mission to bring San Diego Comic-Con International to you. That means four episodes in your podcast feed this week! First up is writer Alex Segura. He's been handed the keys to the Star Wars kingdom, working on the new Marvel Comics ongoing series alongside artist Phil Noto and letterer Clayton Cowles. The new series fills the gaps between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. The New Republic just slayed the Empire. Now what? We chat with Alex Segura about his Star Wars origin, the responsibility of steering the ship during such a critical moment within the canon, and how he'll test Luke Skywalker when he's seemingly at his Jedi Knight peak. Some writers would throw all their childhood toys into the sandbox with a project like this one, but Segura is cautious not to stuff the story with wish-fulfillment. His Star Wars is a carefully considered narrative, beautifully realized by two top-tier collaborators. As you'll also hear, a franchise like Star Wars can be overwhelming for the audience as well. How do you push the envelope for diehard readers while not alienating potential new fans of the series? What's that line in Hamilton? War is the easy part; governing is the hard part. Star Wars is rolling out monthly from Marvel Comics. Make sure you keep up to date with everything Alex Segura has going on by following his Blue Sky, Instagram, and Substack.
