We're told stress (looking at you cortisol) is the enemy in midlife—but that's too simple. In the right dose (and with real recovery), stress is good medicine that builds resilience and makes us stronger, in sport, at work, and in life. In this episode, we dive into the “stress that helps” with Dr. Sharon Horesh Bergquist—physician, researcher, and author of The Stress Paradox. We break down hormesis (the just-enough stress plus recovery cycle), how the right doses of stress in the form of training, plant phytochemicals, hot/cold exposure, and smart time-restricted eating activates cellular defense pathways that ultimately rebuild us to be stronger right down to our DNA. We also dive into how to stack stressors without tipping into overload, which is key for active midlife women, so we can live longer, healthier, and happier lives.Sharon Bergquist, MD, is a board-certified physician, researcher, and pioneer in lifestyle medicine. She has led $61M in clinical trials on lifestyle interventions and early biomarkers of chronic disease. Her book, The Stress Paradox: Why You Need Stress to Live Longer, Healthier, and Happier (HarperCollins, Mar 2025), unpacks how daily habits activate the body's regenerative systems. An Emory University faculty physician since 2000, she earned a B.S. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale, an M.D. from Harvard, and trained in internal medicine at Brigham & Women's. Her TED-Ed lesson has 8M+ views, and she's been featured by Good Morning America, CNN, ABC News, The Wall Street Journal, and NPR. What if your greatest health challenge could become your most powerful teacher? In this episode of Productivity Smarts, host Gerald J. Leonard sits down with Cindy Wageman, speaker, coach, and bestselling author of Completely Healed: How Understanding the Link Between Trauma, Stress, and Autoimmune Disease Helped Me Get My Life Back. Cindy opens up about her journey of healing from multiple sclerosis, sharing how faith, mindset, and self-discovery transformed her life. She reveals how years of people-pleasing and unprocessed trauma affected her health, and how learning to listen to her intuition, and to God, became the key to true healing. Together, she and Gerald explore the science of epigenetics, explaining how our thoughts, relationships, and environment can literally switch our genes on or off. One of Cindy's most powerful insights came when she realized the importance of being honest with her family about her struggles, a revelation that later inspired her work as a life and relationship coach. This heartfelt episode reminds us that real productivity starts from within, when we nurture our bodies, renew our minds, and live with purpose and balance. Let's dive in! What We Discuss [00:00] Introduction to Cindy Wageman [06:41] Addressing trauma and self-discovery [10:20] Processing trauma and stress [12:03] Daily habits for healing [14:57] Realization about stress and joy [15:51] Discovery of epigenetics [19:28] Recognizing red flags and self-care [24:53] Relationships and boundaries [27:12] Insight for parents and professionals [32:23] Closing remarks Notable Quotes [05:56] “I had to learn through all of the experience that I went through, that I needed to find myself. Pleasers lose themselves.” – Cindy Wageman [07:24] “I decided that I was going to not listen to anyone else, but start listening to myself and my intuition and the voice inside of me, which I feel was God,” – Cindy Wageman [08:13] “Our mind and our bodies are very closely connected. Our brains tell our body, our bodies respond.” – Cindy Wageman [11:11] “I think our bodies can go through the same process when we don't know how to process that trauma and stress.” – Gerald J. Leonard [13:48] “I learned about the eight laws of health... breathing fresh air, getting the rest that you need, exercise, nutrition, trusting in God, sunshine, and balance in life.” – Cindy Wageman [25:16] “There are very toxic people. I wanted to help everyone, I wanted to fix everyone, and I found out that I can't.” — Cindy Wageman [26:11] “There is a term in psychology called Gray Rock — it's really just being a gray rock. Just there, but not being emotionally involved at all.” — Cindy Wageman [27:21] “I think that one of the things that really has affected me through this journey was when I had multiple sclerosis was my children. I had babies, I had little kids. And I didn't tell them what was going on.” – Cindy Wageman [23:07] “I only have control over what I can control — my community, my neighbors, my family. I can give them all the love that I can.” — Cindy Wageman [29:29] “I asked God, why am I crying? And He said, Cindy, this is your story. Why does brain inflammation happen during the freeze response? How do you explain the difference between stress and trauma to patients? What's the single most important starting point for nervous system regulation? This episode answers these critical questions while revealing why emotional eating isn't a willpower problem and introducing the simple three-day tracking tool that changes everything for healing. You'll discover the critical line of overwhelm - that invisible threshold where stress becomes trauma - and learn practical strategies you can implement immediately to support your nervous system and begin the repair process. In this episode you'll learn: [01:19] The Biggest Myth: Why confusing stress and trauma leads to minimizing experiences and self-shame [02:11] Physician's Lens on Trauma: If it makes you sick 20 years later, it wasn't just stress [06:04] Three Nervous System States: Understanding polyvagal theory and the critical line of overwhelm [09:52] Brain Inflammation During Freeze: Why immune cells unleash inflammation as protective survival strategy [13:25] Dysregulation Multiplied by Time: Why autoimmunity takes 20 years of nervous system dysregulation to appear [14:40] Three-Day Nervous System Journal: Simple hourly tracking tool that reveals hidden patterns [19:00] The Gut-Brain Connection: Why your gut is inseparable from brain health and trauma loops [21:22] Emotional Eating and Functional Freeze: Understanding food's hidden functions beyond willpower [24:40] The #1 Starting Point: Why quality sleep has greatest impact on nervous system regulation [25:44] Aligning with Circadian Rhythm: Morning sunlight, red light therapy, and working with your body's healing strategies Main Takeaways: Stress vs. Trauma Requires Different Repair: If it makes you sick 20 years later, it was trauma requiring fundamentally different approaches than stress management The Critical Line of Overwhelm: Personal capacity threshold where activation becomes trauma and the body automatically hits emergency brake Brain Inflammation Serves Protection: Immune cells unleash inflammation during freeze to facilitate disconnection and energy conservation for survival Time Compounds Dysregulation: Autoimmunity requires approximately 20 years of nervous system dysregulation to manifest as diagnosable disease Three-Day Tracking Creates Awareness: Hourly nervous system tracking reveals patterns showing time spent in shutdown, stress, or calm aliveness Innate Healing Requires Right Conditions: Surgical incisions prove the body heals itself when blocks are removed and proper support provided Gut-Brain Creates Stuck Points: Imbalanced gut causes neurochemical problems feeding back to worsen gut issues, limiting therapy progress Food Function Reveals Need: Emotional eating serves specific purposes - staying awake, avoiding feelings, managing energy - not willpower failure Sleep Impacts Everything: Quality sleep has greatest single effect on nervous system regulation and reduces sugar cravings Notable Quotes: "If it makes you sick 20 years later, that was not just stress. That was trauma your body was experiencing in childhood. You're looking at it through the lens of your adult self now, but that's not how you were experiencing it back then." "The critical line of overwhelm is where you've done your best. Your best wasn't good enough, and hitting the wall means there's no point in trying anymore." "Brain inflammation is part of a trauma response. Sometimes it triggers it. Sometimes it's triggered by the freeze response, but they always happen together." "Dysregulation multiplied by time becomes diagnoses. It's predictable." "Track your nervous system, and you'll be amazed at how much you learn about yourself in a week." Episode Takeaway: The critical line of overwhelm represents your personal threshold where stress becomes trauma and your body automatically engages the emergency brake. Brain inflammation during freeze is part of the deliberate survival strategy - helping you disconnect, go numb, and conserve energy for survival. The insight: dysregulation multiplied by time becomes disease. Autoimmunity takes approximately 20 years of compounded nervous system dysregulation to manifest. This explains why short-term stress doesn't cause chronic illness but prolonged trauma patterns do. The three-day nervous system journal - tracking your inner state hourly - reveals patterns invisible to both practitioners and clients. This tracking tool shows how much time you spend in each of the three states and guides targeted intervention. Quality sleep stands as the single most powerful starting point for nervous system regulation. Better sleep reduces emotional eating, decreases sugar cravings, and increases your capacity to handle stress before crossing that critical line into trauma territory. Why do small moments unleash outsized reactions? In this Healthy Mind, Healthy Life episode, clinical psychologist Dr. Tony Iezzi explains reenactments—those unconscious loops that pull us back into old stories. We unpack how everyday interactions can echo deeper themes like shame, abandonment, betrayal, or not being heard, and the 5-step approach to notice, regulate, name the theme, plan, and act differently. Straight talk, practical examples, and a clear path to break the cycle and respond with choice, not conditioning. About the guest Dr. Tony Iezzi is a clinical psychologist with 35+ years on the front lines of trauma recovery and co-author of Reenactments: Break the Behavior Patterns That Keep You Stuck in Trauma, Stress, and Everyday Life. His work helps people identify the core themes driving their reactions and replace automatic loops with intentional responses. Key takeaways (bullet points) Reenactments = patterned loops where body–mind–brain replay past responses in present situations; it's not only “big T” trauma—everyday moments can trigger old themes. Themes drive reactions (loss, abandonment, betrayal, humiliation, feeling unseen, feeling trapped, rescuer/underdog roles). Treat the theme, not just the obvious trigger. Normal reaction vs reenactment: normal passes quickly; reenactment lingers (hours/days) and feels disproportionate or hard to trace. Lingering is a red flag. Awareness is step one. Use daily journaling or meditation to capture incidents, feelings, and the underlying theme (e.g., “I felt shamed in that meeting”). Five-step method: 1) Awareness something happened; 2) Regulate (walk, journal, quiet time) to think clearly; 3) Name the theme; 4) Plan a different response; 5) Execute (e.g., a direct, calm conversation next day). Motives matter: act from self-respect and needs, not people-pleasing; otherwise you recreate the loop. Expect recurrence. Triggers will happen; the goal isn't zero triggers—it's choosing differently when they appear. Face it, don't avoid it. Avoidance keeps you stuck; approach the scary moment with a prepared plan to reclaim your voice and align with who you want to be. Hey team! Today I'm talking with Nick Jonsson, a best-selling author, executive coach, and co-founder of Executives' Global Network. Nick is the author of Executive Loneliness: The 5 Pathways to Overcoming Isolation, Stress, Anxiety & Depression in the Modern Business World. His work focuses on helping leaders tackle isolation, burnout, and addiction while finding healthier, more sustainable ways to succeed. Now I realize that doesn't seem particularly ADHD focused, but I thought that this would be a good interview to take because adults with ADHD have a substantially increased risk of substance use disorders. And so while Nick's work doesn't specifically cover ADHD, there is still a lot that you can glean from it. In our conversation, Nick shares his own journey through loneliness, denial, and alcohol addiction, and how vulnerability and connection became essential tools for his recovery. We dig into practical strategies for opening up in safe spaces, replacing harmful coping mechanisms with meaningful activities, and creating accountability systems that support long-term well-being. We also touch on how social media and other modern habits can quietly feed into loneliness, and what it takes to build resilience against them. If you'd life to follow along on the show notes page you can find that at HackingYourADHD.com/248 YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/y835cnrk Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HackingYourADHD This Episode's Top Tips Frame recovery as replacement, not deprivation. When looking to break out of unhealthy coping mechanisms, be they alcohol, social media, or some other addiction, deliberately plan what will give you that same connection without the negative costs. Having planned positive alternatives like exercise, hobbies, or group activities can make all the difference in following through with your intentions. Watch out for the “gray zone” of addiction; you don't need to wait until hitting rock bottom to start changing habits. If you are questioning your relationship with alcohol, social media, or other damaging habits, take the time to reflect on what is really driving those habits. Remember, you don't have to make something worse before making it better. When you can, volunteering in support groups or mentoring others not only helps them, but it can also reinforce your own sense of belonging and purpose.
Do you ever feel like stress is running your life? And are you worried about how stress is affecting your teen's confidence and resilience? In this episode of Power Your Parenting: Moms with Teens, Colleen O'Grady welcomes stress expert Dr. Rebecca Heiss, author of Springboard: Transform Stress to Work for You. Dr. Heiss shares her powerful, research-backed approach to using stress as a source of energy and growth rather than something to avoid or suppress. She explains why trying to “calm down” often backfires, why stress can actually be a sign of meaning and purpose, and how parents can model healthier responses to stress for their kids. With humor, science, and practical tools, Dr. Heiss breaks down her Fear Less Stress Formula—helping moms and teens recognize stress, reframe it as an adventure instead of an ordeal, and take small steps forward instead of freezing or avoiding. She also highlights how storytelling, mindset shifts, and psychological safety at home can empower both parents and teens to thrive. Stress isn't the enemy—it's energy your body gives you to rise to challenges. Stories shape outcomes—choose the one that best serves you and your teen. What if you were doing everything right? Tracking your macros, lifting weights, eating clean and your body still felt inflamed, puffy, and broken? That was Annie Kundis's reality. A former bodybuilder and competitive powerlifter turned mom and influencer, Annie spent over a decade following every fitness rule in the book only to watch her energy crash, her digestion spiral, and her confidence disappear. In this episode, Annie shares how DUTCH and GI-MAP testing completely changed her life after years of feeling dismissed by traditional doctors who told her to “just eat less and exercise more.” For the first time, real data revealed what was actually happening: low hormones, flipped cortisol, gut infections, and nutrient malabsorption. With that clarity, Annie finally had a roadmap for healing, not more restriction. She opens up about pressing pause on hard training, cutting caffeine, and learning to rest without guilt, plus the simple protocols that led to her first regular digestion in over a decade. We also dive into the emotional side: body dysmorphia, burnout, and rebuilding self-trust after years of fighting her body. Annie's story is raw, hopeful, and deeply relatable, showing that healing isn't about perfection, it's about understanding your body and giving it what it truly needs. If you've ever felt inflamed, exhausted, or unseen by the medical system, this episode will hit home. Motherkind Moment is your place for calm, connection, and a shift in perspective before the week ahead. This week's Moment is with Rhiannon Lambert, one of the UK's leading nutritionists and the bestselling author of The Science of Nutrition. Rhiannon shares such a refreshing message about food and children: we need to stop stressing. She explains how our little ones pick up on the pressure we put around food – and how that can actually push them further away from eating the things we want them to. Instead, Rhiannon shares practical, kind advice to help us take the pressure off and support a positive relationship with food. I loved Rhiannon's honesty about her own experience – including the nights her little boy refuses dinner completely and the small, realistic swaps she makes to keep things simple. This is such a reassuring, non-judgemental conversation. A reminder that no child is a perfect eater, and that taking the stress out of mealtimes can transform not just what our children eat – but how we all feel around food. Stress symptoms you've been brushing off aren't flaws—they're messages. In this Don't Cut Your Own Bangs mini-series - Put Down the Panic: A Kinder Guide to Stress, therapist Danielle Ireland, walks through the quiet ways stress shows up (jaw clenching, gut flutters, broken sleep) and how a few gentle shifts can keep those whispers from turning into burnout—perfect timing as the holidays approach. Here's the heart of it: your body is a messenger, not a problem. “The way your body is responding to stress is not failure—it is information.” You also can't outrun stress—“Suppressed stress doesn't vanish.” High thresholds only delay the crash. The good news? Tiny things work. A one-minute body-scan, a short walk or stretch, and a slow, deep breath can reset more than you think when you do them consistently. Want ideas you can try today? Do a quick head-to-toe scan to notice tension, add a few minutes of gentle movement, and breathe slowly—simple box breathing (4-4-4-4) if that helps. These aren't grand gestures; they're steady, doable practices that add up. We have two topics for you today. First out is a new meta-analysis examining the impact of timing your protein intake immediately before or after workouts. Does it matter? And if so, how big are the differences? Then we tackle a topic a lot of you have been curious about: ”Daniel is training weird.” Let's explain. Daniel has been performing the big barbell lifts almost daily for over fifty days, and he feels stronger and in better shape than he has in a long time. He's also shared a lot about it on Instagram, and it seems you have questions. What's his reasoning behind this experiment? How long does he plan to continue with it? What are the risks? Don't your muscles need 48 hours of recovery before being trained again? And how should you go about it if you want to try it? Timestamps: 02:20 - Protein timing: Does it matter if you eat your protein immediately before or after your workout? 10:20 - Daniel's weird training routine: Easy Strength – daily full body workouts for over fifty days straight. *** Do you like what you hear so far? Episode Summary:In this episode, Dr. Ali Novitsky, MD, your favorite obesity medicine doctor & fitness guru, continues her exploration of stress management, building on insights from previous episodes. She recaps the physiology of stress and the six identified stress types: Assertive, Control, Validation, Isolation, Catastrophizing, and Impulsivity. Understanding one's stress type is emphasized as crucial, since it allows individuals to tailor their approach to managing stress more effectively.Dr. Novitsky introduces a powerful tool: “Name It to Tame It.” By identifying and naming emotions, people can significantly reduce their intensity and regain control over stress levels. She shares a story about a child's first day at a new school, illustrating how naming feelings of anxiety helped her manage emotions more effectively. The discussion highlights the importance of noticing where emotions are felt in the body and how describing these sensations can be as effective as naming them. Dr. Novitsky encourages listeners to take 90 seconds to sit with their emotions, breathe, and practice mindfulness as a way to regulate emotional responses.Breathwork is presented as a simple yet powerful strategy for emotional regulation, and Dr. Novitsky encourages the audience to integrate this practice. As the episode concludes, listeners are reminded to take the stress type test linked in the show notes, which will be helpful for the ongoing series. She also announces the upcoming Transform 10 program—focused on emotional regulation and stress management, beginning in January.Dr. Ali invites everyone to continue exploring these vital topics together and to discover ways to transform stress into a superpower.Time Stamps:00:00:00 - Introduction to Stress ManagementAn overview of the podcast series on stress, including previous episodes and the importance of understanding stress types.00:01:11 - The Six Stress TypesDiscussion of the six identified stress types: Assertive, Control, Validation, Isolation, Catastrophizing, and Impulsivity.00:02:05 - Stress as a Health PriorityThe significance of stress management and its acceptance compared to physical health issues.00:03:19 - Name It to Tame ItIntroduction of the tool for emotional awareness and regulation, emphasizing the importance of naming emotions.00:04:11 - Real-Life Application: A Personal StoryA personal anecdote about the host's daughter experiencing anxiety on her first day at a new school.00:06:00 - The Power of Naming EmotionsExplaining how identifying emotions can reduce their intensity and help in managing stress.00:08:07 - Describing Physical SensationsThe importance of recognizing and describing physical sensations associated with emotions.00:10:05 - Emotional Processing and Family DynamicsInsights into family discussions about emotions and the role of shared experiences in emotional regulation.00:12:05 - The 90-Second RuleExplaining the significance of the 90-second timeframe for processing emotions and the role of breathwork.00:13:43 - Breathwork TechniquesIntroduction to breathwork as a tool for emotional regulation and its accessibility in various situations.00:15:10 - Engaging in Fun Breathing ExercisesA light-hearted approach to practicing breathwork with family to enhance emotional regulation.00:17:39 - The Superpower of Emotional AwarenessEncouragement to embrace emotional awareness and the benefits of understanding one's feelings.00:18:31 - Upcoming Programs and ResourcesInformation about the Transform 10 program and the importance of enrolling for further support in stress management.Work with Dr. Ali

We explore the science behind human mate selection in both short- and long-term relationships. We discuss universal traits valued in long-term partners along with key differences between women and men in what they prioritize when selecting a mate.
