Apostles of Development: Six Economists and the World They Made (Oxford University Press and Penguin RandomHouse South Asia, 2025) by Dr. David Engerman recounts the work of six individuals, all former classmates at Cambridge University, who helped make international development--the effort to reduce poverty and inequality around the world--into a juggernaut of the second half of the twentieth century. International development employed millions, affected billions, and spent trillions; it held the hopes of the former colonies to create an economic independence to match their newfound political one, and the plans of wealthy counties to build an enduring economic order. The six Apostles in this book include some of South Asia's best-known names, like Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen and long-serving Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, as well as leading academics (Jagdish Bhagwati) and key policy-makers in both national and international circles. Taken together, this group both reflected and shaped the growing enterprise of international development from the time they left Cambridge in the mid-1950s well into the 2010s.For many years, the second half of the twentieth century was understood primarily through the lens of the Cold War. And yet, for the majority of the world, living in what was then called the Third World (and which is now called the Global South), development was a constant, while American-Soviet geopolitics only occasionally impinged upon their lives. And these six, as much as any other group, changed the way economists theorized development and aid officials practiced it. Their biographies, then, are the history of development.Based on newly available archival documents from 10 countries, and on interviews with four of the subjects, the widows of the other two, and almost 100 of their colleagues, friends, classmates, and rivals, this book combines riveting personal accounts with a sweeping history of one of the enduring human activities of the late 20th century and early 21st centuries: creating a more prosperous and equitable world. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Send us a textTurning fifty isn't just about crossing an age threshold—it's about recognizing the human connections that build resilience throughout a lifetime. In this deeply personal episode, therapist Steve Bisson reflects on the relationships that have shaped his capacity for strength, growth, and recovery across five decades.Steve begins by honoring his parents, whose contrasting yet complementary influences established his foundation. His father, who lacked a paternal role model yet became an exceptional dad himself, taught Steve about honesty and critical thinking. His mother—a glass-ceiling breaker before the term existed—demonstrated determination through her 47-year career and instilled feminist principles that continue to guide Steve's professional approach. Together, they exemplified loyalty, work ethic, and perseverance that became cornerstones of his resilience framework. The episode takes listeners through Steve's "Three Musketeers" friendship with Joce and Frank—a bond spanning 38 years that has weathered countless challenges. Through emotional storytelling, Steve reveals how these lifelong connections, along with other key friendships, professional relationships, and even his therapy clients, have collectively taught him different aspects of resilience. Perhaps most touching is his tribute to his teenage daughters, who continue to teach him patience, emotional expression, and growth even as they navigate their own challenges.Steve's resilience journey illuminates how our capacity to overcome obstacles isn't built in isolation but through meaningful connections that sustain us. Whether you're approaching a milestone birthday, reflecting on your support network, or simply curious about the human factors behind emotional strength, this episode offers valuable insights into how relationships shape our ability to navigate life's inevitable challenges. Champaign County Court Appointed Special Advocate's (CASA) representatives stop by to passionately and compassionately explain why the kids in our community need CASA to to be their voice. Listen as Candi, a townie and CASA volunteer, and Amy, a Peoria transplant and Director of Development, talk about how they attach themselves to the child abuse and neglect cases in Champaign County, the wide and vast volunteer base that makes up the majority of their workforce, how the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) and CASA differ and align, why this is an organization worth dedicating time and money to and the numbers CASA are able to help in our area. This one's a little different. You asked what's keeping you up at night—and Pete, Sarah, and Terry actually answered. From the deceptively simple (Can someone choose unpaid time off?) to the maddeningly vague (How do we roll out new policies when everything's constantly changing?), Terry Cook brings the practical, and Sarah Piscatelli brings the legal. Together, they walk a clean line between “it depends” and “you'd better document that.”Topics include:Why employees sometimes request unpaid time even when PTO is available—and when you can (and should) say no.What it takes to communicate and track policy changes when your workforce reads less email than your average raccoon. Why shift-based resentment and hybrid friction aren't just cultural challenges—they're legal minefields.Plus: clear advice on what tools to use for policy sign-offs (spoiler: DocuSign's not a bad start), when a bathroom-stall poster isn't enough, and why “assume goodwill” should probably be in your code of conduct. In classic Human Solutions fashion, it's fast, useful, and just human enough to make you feel like you're not alone out there! Superman is a 2025 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Superman. Written and directed by James Gunn, it is the first film in the DC Universe (DCU) produced by DC Studios and the second reboot of the Superman film series. David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent / Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced. In the film, Superman must prove to the world that he is their protector after billionaire Lex Luthor enacts a plan to turn public opinion against him.Development on a sequel to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film Man of Steel (2013) began by October 2014, with Henry Cavill set to reprise his role as Superman. Plans changed after the troubled production of Justice League (2017) and the Man of Steel sequel was no longer moving forward by May 2020. Gunn began work on a new Superman film around August 2022. In October, he became co-CEO of DC Studios with producer Peter Safran and they began work on a new DC Universe. Gunn was revealed to be writing the film in December. The title Superman: Legacy was announced the next month, Gunn was confirmed to be directing in March 2023, and Corenswet and Brosnahan were cast that June. The subtitle was dropped by the end of February 2024, when filming began in Svalbard, Norway. Production primarily took place at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, with location filming around Georgia and Ohio. Filming wrapped in July. The film takes inspiration from the comic book All-Star Superman (2005–2008) by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, among others.Superman premiered at the TCL Chinese Theater on July 7, 2025, and was released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on July 11. It is the first film of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Superman received positive reviews from critics and has grossed $220 million against a $225 million budget.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
After the shock of last week, the fallout from the major Xbox layoffs continues in a figurative and literal sense. It's come to light, thanks to Video Games Chronicle, that there are multiple Fallout Games in Development from Bethesda. But even with this report, can we have any faith in Microsoft and Xbox that these games will even come out? Why sales data for the last few months may cement the direction Xbox takes. Also, the Ghost of Yotei State of Play showcased how the game differs from Ghost of Tsushima, while it also retains many similarities to the game that preceded it. Is there too much focus on sequels needing to innovate or be different than the first game? Is it bad that a game is just "more of that?"Plus, a Donkey Kong movie could be one of the several film projects Nintendo has coming up, and does it diminish Sean's hype for the game that it was initially created for Switch 1? More concerning developments in Subnautica 2 development, and more! You can also watch this episode in video form on the W2M Network Youtube Channel, please give us a like, comment on the episode, and give the channel a subscribe and follow as well: https://youtube.com/live/PbSANSJ3mrU

In this episode, I'm reflecting on a question that's been sitting with me lately: Does any of this really matter? It was sparked by a thoughtful LinkedIn post from Vanessa Forslev, and it's a question many of us ask - especially during times of chaos, uncertainty, or overwhelm. I talk about the very real pull to veer off course - even when the course still aligns with your purpose - and why it's so important to stay grounded in your “why.” I also share powerful lessons from a client organization that's staying the course despite external challenges, including funding cuts and political pressures. Their example is a beautiful reminder of what it looks like to lead with clarity, compassion, and courage. If you've ever felt discouraged, distracted, or tempted to abandon a path that once felt meaningful - this episode is for you. Enjoy! Episode 80: Balancing Relief and Risk: Pain Management and Opioid Prescribing in Children and Adolescents Evaluation and Credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/medchat80 Target Audience This activity is targeted toward primary care physicians and advanced providers. Statement of Need This podcast will address effective pain management in adolescents and teens and the utilization of opioids and risk reduction. Pediatricians may not have up-to-date knowledge and skills to effectively balance pain management with opioid safety in children and adolescents. Current practice often reflects underuse of multimodal pain strategies, inconsistent application of opioid prescribing guidelines, and limited screening for substance use disorders (SUDs) in youth. This educational activity addresses the gap between current and optimal practice by enhancing pediatricians' competence in evidence-based opioid prescribing and their performance in implementing risk mitigation strategies in clinical settings. Objectives Describe evidence-based guidelines for prescribing opioids in a manner that optimizes both pain treatment and safety for children and adolescents (“youth”). Discuss evidence-based strategies for the prevention, screening, and treatment for substance use disorders in youth. Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky are the co-creators of the Design Sprint (the famous five-day product innovation process) and authors of the bestselling book Sprint. After decades of working with over 300 startups in the earliest stages, they discovered that most startups fail not because they can't build, but because they build the wrong thing. The very beginning of a startup is your highest-leverage moment, and most teams waste months or years by skipping a few critical early questions. Jake and John developed the Foundation Sprint to help startups validate ideas and compress months of work into just two days. What you'll learn:1. The step-by-step Foundation Sprint process that compresses three or four months of validation into two days—including templates you can use immediately2. Why differentiation is the #1 predictor of startup success (with the 2x2 framework that you can use with your team)3. The three fundamental questions every founder should answer before writing a line of code4. The “note and vote” technique that eliminates groupthink and gets honest answers from your colleagues5. In this episode of The First Day from The Fund Raising School, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D., sits down with fundraising powerhouse John Zeller, former Senior Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Pennsylvania, to unpack the behind-the-scenes magic of major gift fundraising. While the headlines may tout seven- and eight-figure gifts, Zeller emphasizes that consistent cultivation, stewardship, and relationship-building are the real power players behind any billion-dollar campaign. Case in point: nearly a third of gifts during Penn's $5.4 billion campaign came from donors giving less than $50,000. The message? Every gift counts, and every donor deserves attention. Zeller shares how he and his team shifted from a transactional mindset to a holistic approach, ensuring donors were involved long before and after the ask. At Penn, they implemented a strategy called “non-financial objectives,” inviting people to volunteer, serve on committees, and participate in university life without writing a check. It wasn't just nice, it was strategic. By formalizing volunteer roles with job descriptions and term limits, they attracted over 32,000 volunteers across two campaigns. Volunteers became passionate advocates, and many transitioned into donors, with research showing that 80% of engaged volunteers go on to give financially. Bonus stat: over half of high-net-worth individuals volunteer, making this a double win for fundraisers. Of course, the million-dollar (sometimes literally) question is: When do you make the ask? Zeller offers his “8-question method” as a roadmap. The first four help determine donor capacity, interest, relationship strength, and philanthropic inclination. The next four zoom in on specifics: gift area, amount, timing, and potential assets involved (like IPOs or business sales). If you can confidently answer all eight, go ahead and pop the question, because if you've done your homework, it shouldn't come as a surprise. And if the timing's off, donors will let you know. Zeller closes by underscoring that stewardship isn't just a step in the giving cycle, it's a mindset. From matching students with donors to hosting impactful scholarship receptions and “Engaging Minds” events featuring top researchers, Penn created moments that made donors feel connected, appreciated, and inspired to give more. Even in today's fast-paced, AI-infused fundraising world, Zeller insists the essentials remain the same: data-informed strategies and genuine human relationships. In fundraising, as in life, it's all about showing up, saying thank you (often), and making people feel like part of the mission.
In this rich and eye-opening episode, we sit down with Ewald Stöteler, a veteran homeopath from the Netherlands and author of Hahnemann's Homeopathy, to explore what it truly means to practice in alignment with Hahnemann's original vision. Ewald takes us deep into the often-misunderstood world of miasms, challenging the common notion that prescribing the "right remedy" is enough. With clarity and conviction, he shares why understanding a patient's inherited tendencies and historical disease context is key to unlocking real healing. His passion for homeopathy sparked in the late 1970s and shines through as he explains the importance of reconnecting with the foundational texts and applying them with precision. If you've ever wondered why some remedies don't work the way you expect, this conversation will shift your entire approach. Episode Highlights: 04:04 - Ewald's Journey into Homeopathy 09:38 - Explanation of miasms and disease tendencies 16:27 - Development of LM potencies 19:45 - Using multiple remedies and potencies 22:29 - Overview of Ewald's book "Hahnemann's Homeopathy" 25:58 - Using intercurrent remedies and nosodes 27:36 - Relevance of Hahnemann's methods today 31:16 - Complementary remedies and contextual Materia Medica 35:10 - Three-way approach to prescribing 38:21 - Prescribing multiple remedies in alternation 42:14 - Ewald's teaching and education programs 45:28 - E-learning courses on Hahnemann's homeopathy About my Guests: Ewald Stöteler is a respected Dutch classical homeopath, author, and international educator known for his deep commitment to the original teachings of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Born in 1957 and originally trained as a nurse, Stöteler turned to homeopathy in the late 1970s, inspired by personal experiences in oncology care and a desire to find more holistic healing approaches. Over the past four decades, he has dedicated his career to studying and applying Hahnemann's Organon of Medicine and Chronic Diseases, with particular emphasis on LM potencies, miasms, and precise posology. He is the author of the acclaimed book Hahnemann's Homeopathy, which offers a detailed guide to understanding and implementing Hahnemann's full therapeutic model. Stöteler is known internationally for his clear, structured teaching and his ability to bridge theory with clinical practice. He has taught extensively in Europe, Japan, and beyond, emphasizing what he calls the "Contextual Materia Medica" and disease classification based on Hahnemann's original frameworks. As the founder of the Samuel Hahnemann Foundation, he continues to train practitioners in what he views as the purest form of classical homeopathy. His work has significantly influenced a new generation of homeopaths seeking to return to the roots of the discipline while applying it effectively in modern clinical settings. Who are the poor? It's complex, encompassing food insecurity, homelessness, and material lack, as Michael Simmon from the Rescue Mission shared. While our nation has safety nets, biblical understanding goes deeper.Scripture References: Proverbs 5:1-14, Proverbs 29:7, Proverbs 31:20, Proverbs 22:9, Proverbs 28:27, Proverbs 17:5, Proverbs 19:17, Matthew 25, Luke 4, 1 John 3:17-18, Galatians 2:9-10, Acts 3:1-9Key Points:Poverty's Complex Causes: Proverbs acknowledges poverty results from both bad choices and injustice. Avoid instant judgment; it's a mix of personal decisions, family, and systemic issues. The Righteous Care for the Poor:"The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern" (Proverbs 29:7).The Proverbs 31 wife, epitomizing wisdom, "opens her arms to the poor" (Proverbs 31:20). Caring for the poor should be central to followers of Jesus.Rewards for Caring for the Poor:"The generous will themselves be blessed" (Proverbs 22:9)."Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses" (Proverbs 28:27). There's eternal reward and divine warning.God Identifies with the Poor:"Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker" (Proverbs 17:5)."Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord" (Proverbs 19:17).Matthew 25 highlights: "Whatever you did for one of the least of these... you did for me." God takes our actions personally.A Holistic Gospel:Our gospel must be good news to the poor. Jesus' mission began with proclaiming good news to the poor (Luke 4:18).Avoid two errors:Serving the poor while neglecting Jesus/discipleship: Without Jesus, healing from deep pain is incomplete (Heidi Heredia).Preaching the gospel but neglecting the poor: "How can the love of God be in that person?" (1 John 3:17). Our gospel needs "feet"—actions. The early church was known for this care.Helping Without Hurting:Avoid increasing shame/savior complex: Don't disempower. Use asset-based community development (Steve Corbett) – resource their gifts to restore dignity (e.g., Creekside Community Church selling gifts).Avoid "parachuting": Partner with indigenous ministries. Building relationships and local ownership are key (Dave Schlich). Jesus is already at work; we join Him.Avoid giving relief to those who need development: Understand relief (immediate aid), rehabilitation (getting out of the pit), development (learning to walk again). Our goal is full restoration.Panhandling: Michael Simmon advises against cash. Offer connection, food/hygiene items. "Being seen" is vital. The goal: restore full humanness, glorifying God in right relationship with Him, self, others, and creation. Conclusion:Many are helping without hurting (Rescue Mission, Gleanings, Dream Center). We're called to embody this holistic gospel.Call to Action:Remember Acts 3:1-9: Peter and John gave the lame man healing in Jesus' name, not just money. We empower people to "walk, jump, and praise God." Ask God for your part and pray for those leading this work. Support the show*Summaries and transcripts are generated using AI.
