Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas

The story goes that Wolfgang Pauli, who first proposed the existence of neutrinos, was embarrassed to have done so, as it was considered uncouth to hypothesize new particles that could not be detected. Modern physicists have no such scruples, of course, but more importantly neutrinos turn out to be very detectable, given sufficient resources and experimental technique. I talk with neutrino physicist Ryan Patterson about what current and upcoming experiments teach us about neutrinos themselves, as well as implications for dark matter and why there are more particles than antiparticles in the universe.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2025/12/08/228-ryan-patterson-on-the-physics-of-neutrinos/Support Mindscape on Patreon.Ryan Patterson received his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University. Frank Herbert's 1965 epic Dune was once the domain of sci-fi diehards. But in recent years, the book has crossed over into the mainstream. In today's Books We've Loved, Andrew Limbong and B.A. Parker are joined by Throughline's Ramtin Arablouei, who makes a personal case for the story's appeal – despite its density. William Hope Hodgson's The Night Land (1912) is a staggering piece of early weird fiction — an immense, apocalyptic vision set millions of years in the future, after the sun has died. Humanity survives in the Last Redoubt, a titanic metal pyramid lit by internal power, surrounded by eternal darkness and monstrous forces that hunger for the light within. The protagonist, a telepathic man of that far-future world, senses the spirit of his long-dead love calling from another human fortress — the Lesser Redoubt — now besieged in the black wilderness. Driven by love and duty, he ventures into the Night Land: a desolate, monster-haunted plain where the Earth's surface is stalked by “Watchers,” “Silent Ones,” and colossal horrors that defy comprehension. It's equal parts cosmic horror, doomed romance, and proto-science-fantasy. Hodgson's prose is archaic, deliberately medieval in tone, which makes the book feel like an illuminated manuscript describing a dream of the end of time. Modern readers often find it dense, but it rewards endurance — this is an early ancestor of Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, and dark science fiction from Dune to Dark Souls. In this episode, Daniel sits down with acclaimed author Kevin J. Anderson for an in-depth conversation recorded live at Comic Con Denmark. Anderson, known for his prolific career across science fiction and fantasy, has written numerous bestsellers as well as novels set in the X-Files, Star Wars, and Dune universes. With 'The X-Files' as the central theme, we dive into his contributions to the franchise—how he approached expanding the mythology of Mulder and Scully on the page, the challenges and opportunities of writing tie-in fiction, why we never got a fourth novel, and what happened to a shelved book idea involving Mulder and a vampire serial killer. Join me as we explore Anderson's process for writing 'The X-Files' and his collaboration with Chris Carter and the team at 1013 Productions. We'll also touch on behind-the-scenes details from his novels Ground Zero, Ruins, and Antibodies. A quick note: This episode was recorded at Comic Con, so there's a bit of background noise — but we hope you'll still enjoy the interview. Special thanks to Kevin J. Anderson for taking time out of his schedule during his visit to Denmark to talk with us.

For non-fiction November, and with a nod to NaNoWriMo (RIP), we're reading Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity by David Lynch. Somehow this ended up falling exactly at the intersection of all our interests—creativity, art, yoga, film, science. It's all coming together. Show NotesOf course this made us want to do all the creative things. We just have to do them! We know. We know! We're getting there. This is such a great book to read in little snippets if you need a bit of creative inspiration. Are we going to have to try Transcendental Meditation? Apparently the Toronto TM centre is in the Royal York Hotel. Our next episode is our annual FUJK episode, in which we read something hella queer instead of the boy wizard series by she who must not be named. This year we're reading The Holiday Trap by Roan Parrish. And our last episode of the year will be our Holiday Wrap Up episode! In this episode of The Filmumentaries Podcast, I speak with art director and supervising art director Dominic Masters, whose decades-long career spans some of the biggest films and series of the last 40 years. He grew up around movie sets thanks to his father, the legendary production designer Tony Masters (2001: A Space Odyssey, Papillon, Dune), and started his own journey at 19 when he spent eight months in China on Tai-Pan — the first Western movie ever shot there. Dom talks about learning the foundational skills of drafting, the early struggles of finding work in the British film industry of the mid-80s, and the unique lifestyle of moving from production to production — that strange micro-community that forms on set, often in far-flung locations.  We cover his experiences on Titanic working under James Cameron, the shift from physical sets to set extensions and digital workflows, the evolution of the art department, and how shows like House of the Dragon demand an enormous level of coordination, creativity and technical precision. We also talk about the British Film Designers Guild, the camaraderie that forms in the art department, and his personal creative outlets, photography and music, that keep him balanced between jobs.  It's a wide-ranging, honest conversation with someone who has seen the industry evolve from the studio backlots of the 1970s to enormous contemporary productions. Topics discussedGrowing up around film sets and learning from legendary designersHis first job on Tai-Pan in 1985 and the experience of shooting in ChinaThe hierarchy and craft of the art departmentCollaboration with directors, designers, construction and VFXWorking on Titanic and the extraordinary scale of the buildThe Harry Potter films, James Bond films, and shifting directorsThe intensity and scale of House of the DragonSurviving the freelance lifestyle and industry downturnsCreative outlets outside the jobGuest Dominic Masters – Art Director / Supervising Art DirectorSelected credits: House of the Dragon, Belfast, Wonder Woman, Now You See Me 2, Casino Royale, Harry Potter, Titanic, The World Is Not Enough, The Avengers. This podcast is completely independent and made possible by listener support.

Webb's "Seekers Series"- and the War in Heaven, the Battle in Unseen Places . . . just got real. It's the year 2158 and the world did not end- it was enslaved. Now the Seekers are humanity's last hope. Hunted by the Eye of the Eternal—the Order's merciless secret police—these brave rebels have risked everything to find the lost Words of Creator God, banned for generations and lost to living memory. Now, what began as a quest for Truth has evolved into a desperate struggle for survival as, trapped and cornered, the Seekers must overcome not just their pursuers, but also their own doubts and fears as their own faith . . . and even their sanity . . . begins to unravel. The actor Kyle MacLachlan readily acknowledges the immense impact that the late director David Lynch had on his life and career. After making his on-screen debut starring in Lynch's sci-fi epic Dune (1984), Kyle expected superstardom — only to see the movie flop commercially. However, the connection he forged with Lynch led to a lifelong friendship and a filmography inhabiting the director's unforgettable and mysterious worlds. I look back at my time on set with Kyle as the iconic Dale Cooper on Twin Peaks, and we dissect our characters in the 2017 sequel series. Plus, we learn how Kyle’s Pacific Northwest roots led him to become a winemaker, and why he started a podcast to learn from 20-somethings. As I feel at any opportunity for us to connect, I’m reminded why perhaps David Lynch was just as lucky to find Kyle. Read Kyle’s New York Times opinion piece about David Lynch here. Tara Erickson & Andrew Gordon react to Doctor Sleep (2019 – Director's Cut), the chilling and emotional supernatural horror sequel to The Shining — written and directed by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, Gerald's Game). Based on Stephen King's 2013 novel, this haunting continuation bridges King's world and Stanley Kubrick's classic vision, expanding the legacy of trauma, addiction, and psychic power known as “the shining.” The film stars Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Moulin Rouge!) as Dan Torrance, now an adult still scarred by the events at the Overlook Hotel. Struggling with alcoholism and inner demons, Dan finds new purpose when he meets Abra Stone, a young girl with powerful psychic abilities, played by Kyliegh Curran (I Can I Will I Did, Secrets of Sulphur Springs). Together, they must face the terrifying cult known as The True Knot, led by the mesmerizing and sinister Rose the Hat, played by Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Dune). In this episode of Poducer, we sit down with Zen Selekta, a DJ and producer whose fusion of spirituality, intention, and raw energy has defined her signature ceremonial bass sound. From Atlanta roots to festival stages, Zen Selekta shares how meditation, breathwork, and self-reflection shape her creative process and keep her grounded on and off stage. She opens up about transforming anxiety into presence, turning music into medicine, and drawing inspiration from thinkers like Joe Dispenza, who teaches the power of embodying what you want before it manifests. We also explore her path through the music industry, building community in Atlanta's bass scene, learning the value of a great agent, and navigating professionalism behind the decks. Zen Zelekta reflects on mentorship, creative faith, and the lessons learned from Pretty Lights' comeback shows, while offering perspective on what it means to thrive as a woman in a male-dominated space. This episode is a reminder that the most powerful artists move both body and spirit.

It's been a buzzy week at the Vogue offices. On Tuesday night, Zohran Mamdani made history as the first Muslim, the first person of South Asian descent, and the youngest in a century to hold the Mayoral position. Vogue's Fashion News Editor, José Criales-Unzueta, joins Chloe and Nicole to discuss the newly announced mayor's style — along with that of his effortlessly chic Gen Z illustrator wife, Rama Duwaji, who stunned last night in a black lace Ulla Johnson skirt and Zeid Hijazi top. Together, they explore how fashion choices can reflect our beliefs, values, and sense of identity. Then, writer Mattie Kahn comes to the Vogue offices to talk to Chloe about Vogue's December cover story that she wrote about Timothee Chalamet. She talks about the challenges of pinning down time to speak with the busy actor who was filming the newest Dune film in Budapest and also working on  performance art promotional videos for his upcoming film, Marty Supreme, set to go to the big screen on Christmas Day.. Plus, Kim Kardashian gets candid with Chloe about taking on her first major acting role (apart from American Horror Story) as Allura Grant in the new Hulu series All's Fair. The show features an all-star cast of women — including Naomi Watts, Teyana Taylor, Glenn Close, and Niecy Nash — the latter of whom Kim says mentored her in acting. Ryan Murphy, who created the series, said he was inspired by the line “Not only am I a lawyer in real life, I play one on TV,” which he felt perfectly suited Kim. He also drew inspiration from the well-known Hollywood lawyer Laura Wasser — whose father, notably, represented Kim's parents during their separation decades before representing Kim in her own divorce. Kim also shares behind-the-scenes details of her fabulous on-screen wardrobe, from a 1992 Jean Paul Gaultier suit with a surprising back reveal to the iconic Donna Karan power suits she sourced with her stylist, Soki Mak, for the role.
