Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz hat zu einer Erneuerung des transatlantischen Verhältnisses aufgerufen. Auf der Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz sagte er, zwischen Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten habe sich eine Kluft aufgetan, ein tiefer Graben. Das gegenseitige Vertrauen müsse deshalb erst repariert werden. In diesem Zusammenhang warb Merz für eine größere europäische Eigenständigkeit. Der Ausstieg aus der selbstverschuldeten Unmündigkeit sei die Voraussetzung für eine gesündere Partnerschaft. Zwischen den USA und der EU hatte es zuletzt mehrere Konflikte gegeben, unter anderem mit Blick auf Handel, Sicherheit und Klimapolitik.
