Today I'm joined by Jon Acuff, a New York Times bestselling author who has spent years studying why so many of us procrastinate and how to finally get out of our own way. We talk about the real reasons people stall out—fear, rejection, imposter syndrome, perfectionism—and how comparison, when used correctly, can actually become a source of inspiration rather than insecurity. Jon also shares practical frameworks for focusing on effort instead of obsessing over outcomes, creating your own personal scorecard for success, and adopting a "let's find out" mentality when it comes to pursuing goals and navigating uncertainty. If you've ever felt stuck between what you say you want and what you're actually doing, this conversation will give you some tools to start closing that gap. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS 00:00 - Intro & Jon Acuff returns to the podcast 01:14 - Why Ryan hates the term "Imposter Syndrome" 03:12 - Healthy vs destructive comparison 06:01 - "Audition your goals" instead of committing immediately 08:25 - Why men create fictional problems before starting 09:56 - Perfectionism and the "all or nothing" trap 12:21 - Thinking long-term to make better decisions 14:56 - "Noble obstacles" and how we sabotage ourselves 20:57 - The danger of attaching too much to outcomes 23:27 - Holding two opposing truths in leadership 25:26 - The "Let's Find Out" mentality 27:57 - Why men need other men to push them 33:18 - Ryan's story of channeling anger through wrestling 35:15 - The four permissions that beat procrastination 38:48 - Discipline vs desire 43:36 - Hustlers skipping the planning stage 45:12 - Becoming the best salesperson of yourself 49:22 - Why men overcommit their schedules 50:04 - How men hide inside hobbies 55:12 - Measuring success as a father 58:45 - Parenting example: the tattoo story 01:02:13 - Where to find Jon Acuff and his new book   Battle Planners: Pick yours up today! We've never done an episode quite like this before. We sat down with writer and creative Allie Carr—twice. In October 2025, she was just beginning to emerge from a really difficult chapter. When we spoke again in February 2026, her spark for life was fully back, and the seeds she had planted were unfolding in real time. In the months between, Allie moved through a Saturn return, career pivots, financial uncertainty, and a deep shedding of who she used to be. What looked like falling apart was actually falling into place. This conversation is a reminder that manifestation often has a full arc: the breakdown, the becoming, and the moment it all clicks. Confidence isn't just mindset crap. It affects your pricing, your messaging, your sales conversations and your boundaries. And ultimately - whether your retreat fills or flops. In this episode, Shannon is joined by leadership expert, sales strategist, and bestselling author Nathan Jamail (she is biased, but he is pretty damn amazing) to unpack the real reason many retreat leaders struggle to sell out their events: lack of business confidence. They discuss: Imposter syndrome in the retreat industry Underpricing rooted in insecurity Overexplaining instead of leading What confident messaging actually sounds like How to build real, earned business confidence They also share that this episode was recorded in their new studio space in Austin - and you can now watch the full conversation on YouTube. If you've ever doubted yourself while launching a retreat, this episode will challenge and strengthen you. What You'll Learn Why confidence directly impacts conversions The hidden cost of underpricing How retreat leaders accidentally repel buyers The difference between loud marketing and confident leadership The discipline required to build real business confidence Key Takeaways Imposter syndrome doesn't disappear - it's managed through action. Underpricing signals insecurity to your audience. Overexplaining weakens authority. Confident leaders make clear decisions and stand by them. Confidence is built through preparation, skill, and repetition - not affirmations alone. In this episode, Cindy Esliger challenges the conventional advice that building a strong support network is essential for career success. While cheerleaders who validate our experiences and celebrate our wins are important, they can also unintentionally keep us stuck. When everyone around us agrees with our perspective, we risk creating an echo chamber, one that reinforces our frustrations without pushing us to try new strategies. Being “right” about workplace bias or systemic challenges doesn't automatically move us closer to goals if our approach isn't evolving. Cindy introduces the concept of a Challenge Network, a small group of thoughtful, invested people who care enough about our success to question our assumptions and expose blind spots. These are not critics who tear us down, but strategic thinkers who stretch perspectives. She outlines six practical steps to build and use this kind of network effectively: 1. Think like a scientist, 2. Assemble a challenge network intentionally, 3. Create distance from our own thinking, 4. Know when to rethink and when to commit, 5. Manage the identity shift, 6. Use feedback without becoming a people pleaser.  Ultimately, Cindy reframes confidence not as certainty in what we already know, but as confidence in our ability to learn. In male-dominated or complex workplaces, cognitive flexibility becomes a competitive advantage. The professionals who advance aren't just talented, they're willing to rethink their strategies when the evidence demands it. If we want to stop sabotaging our success, it may be time to surround ourselves with people who challenge us to grow, not just those who applaud us for staying the same. What if the drive that helped you succeed is the same force slowly burning you out?In this episode, I sit down with hypnotherapist and wellness coach Garrett Wood to explore a truth many high performers quietly live with: chronic stress hidden behind achievement. Garrett, an NBC-HWC, clinical hypnotherapist, executive functioning specialist, and founder of Gnosis Therapy, helps high-achieving leaders break the boom-and-bust cycle of burnout through a nervous-system-first approach. We discuss perfectionism, shame, nervous system overload, and why burnout doesn't arrive overnight — it builds quietly beneath success. This conversation is for the high achiever, the perfectionist, and the one who appears to have it all together while constantly chasing “enough.”The Hidden Cost of PerformanceGarrett shares how high-performance environments can train us to measure self-worth through output. I deeply relate to the pattern where validation feels earned through achievement and rest feels undeserved. Sleep, health, and relationships often deteriorate quietly while productivity rises.Perfectionism & ShamePerfectionism isn't about excellence — it's rooted in beliefs like I am not enough, I am not safe, or I am fundamentally flawed. These beliefs often form early through emotional interpretation rather than explicit messages. Overcompensation can look powerful, but it quietly erodes well-being.Burnout Is ProgressiveBurnout typically moves through stages: driven excitement → sacrificing recovery → wired but exhausted → depletion → shutdown. What feels sudden is often the result of long-ignored signals. Why Self-Care Isn't Always EnoughWorkouts, meditation, or downtime can regulate stress, but they don't complete the stress response if emotions remain unprocessed. High achievers often override emotional signals — “fine” becomes the default, even though fine isn't an emotion. Garrett encourages becoming a “sommelier” of your emotions: identifying, locating, and processing what you feel.Imposter Syndrome & Self-TalkImposter syndrome can be awareness rather than inadequacy. When fear pairs with “I'm not enough,” burnout accelerates. When it pairs with “I'm learning,” resilience grows. What Leads to BurnoutHigh ambition, emotional suppression, identity tied to performance, underlying shame, and lack of stress discharge practices all accumulate. Over time, the nervous system collects its debt.Closing ReflectionThis conversation isn't about becoming less ambitious. It's about becoming safer inside your ambition — because achievement without safety becomes self-abandonment.Work with Garrette Wood:Website: www.gnosistherapy.comFacebook: www.facebook.com/wood.garrettInstagram: www.instagram.com/gnosistherapyLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/gnosistherapyWork With Sherry:Book your FREE 30-minute Food Freedom Call now and start your journey to lasting change! Imposter syndrome gets tossed around constantly in the design world — but what if it's not a syndrome… it's just a temporary feeling (and one we can learn to move through)?   In this episode, we unpack why "imposter syndrome" might be the wrong label, how it can turn into an excuse that keeps you stuck, and what to do when those thoughts show up mid-project, mid-pivot, or mid-big-decision.   We talk about the difference between filling real knowledge gaps (skills, systems, confidence builders) and rewiring your inner dialogue (self-talk, visualization, affirmations, community support). If you've ever questioned whether you "belong" because you don't have the "right" credentials, background, or path — this one is your reminder: you're allowed to build success in a way that fits your life. She began drawing and painting animals as a child, started earning money from pet portraits as a teenager, and later experienced a major turning point in 2001 when she saw a plein air demonstration and committed to painting from life. Influenced by early California and American impressionists, Kim focuses on value, shape, and expressive color, and credits key workshops—especially learning notan and studying with mentors like Skip Whitcomb—for sharpening her compositional and color skills. She speaks candidly about her longstanding struggles with negative self-talk and imposter syndrome, and how learning to detach from the “preciousness” of finished paintings and embrace the process has been her biggest creative “aha” moment. On the business side, Kim emphasizes professionalism, honoring gallery relationships, and balancing what she loves to paint with what sells, while accepting that each artist's journey and “ladder” is unique. She advises aspiring artists to trust their instincts, avoid unhealthy comparison, respect the people working behind the scenes in the art world, and remember there is always another canvas to paint. Audiences quickly disconnect when messaging feels forced or over-rehearsed  Recognize that people just one or two steps ahead can offer more relatable value than distant "experts"  Focus on ROI-driven visibility, not vanity PR. Media should support capital raising, credibility, and measurable business growth      Topics Why Credible Media Matters More in the AI Era How AI increasingly pulls from trusted media sources instead of traditional search rankings  Why appearing on outlets like ABC, CBS, or Fox strengthens long-term digital authority  The Three Pillars of a Powerful Personal Brand Who you are (your authentic personal story)  What you do (your expertise and value proposition)  How you understand your audience's journey (investors, clients, stakeholders)  Why You Don't Need a Dramatic Backstory Shifting from "near-death experience" narratives to audience-centric storytelling  Emotional engagement through authenticity, preparation, and relatability  Overcoming Imposter Syndrome in Thought Leadership Why those one or two steps ahead often deliver the most actionable insight  How smaller media reps build confidence before major national appearances  Turning PR Into Measurable ROI Commissioning research to create newsworthy stories  Using media placements as credibility assets for investor conversations  Structuring PR efforts around business outcomes, not just visibility
