In this episode of the Healthy Living Scottsdale Podcast, Coach Zach and Coach Jolie dive deep into hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for men, with a primary focus on testosterone. The conversation covers how testosterone functions in the male body, the critical role of free testosterone versus total testosterone, and why both numbers — along with sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) — matter when evaluating hormone health. The hosts discuss the growing problem of younger men in their 30s experiencing low testosterone, often linked to lifestyle factors and exposure to endocrine disruptors like plastics, fragrances, cleaning chemicals, and processed foods. They outline common symptoms of low testosterone — including low energy, poor workout recovery, decreased libido, mood changes, and increased belly fat — and stress the importance of confirming low levels with multiple blood tests before starting TRT.
Could your child's ADHD, fatigue, or delayed growth actually be low thyroid? In this episode, Dr. Steven Hotze reveals why hypothyroidism isn't just an adult health issue. It can affect children as young as two! He explains how conventional medicine often overlooks thyroid problems by relying too heavily on blood tests and prescribing pharmaceuticals that mask symptoms without addressing the root cause. Dr. Hotze breaks down how thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, brain function, mood, and overall vitality, and why imbalances can lead to a host of issues, including behavioral changes, poor school performance, menstrual irregularities, and stunted development. He discusses how natural desiccated thyroid, prescribed based on clinical symptoms rather than lab averages, can help restore energy, focus, growth, and quality of life, without resorting to psychotropic drugs or stimulants. If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, depression, or anxiety, or simply isn't thriving, there may be an underlying hormonal imbalance. Learn how evaluating and restoring healthy thyroid function can change the course of their health and future! Watch now and subscribe to our podcasts at www.HotzePodcast.com. Insulin resistance triggers everything from Alzheimer's to erectile dysfunction. Dr. Benjamin Bikman examines the metabolic crisis shared by 50% of America.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1201What We Discuss with Dr. Benjamin Bikman:Half of US adults have insulin resistance without knowing it. It's the upstream driver of most chronic diseases — from high blood pressure to erectile dysfunction to Alzheimer's — not just diabetes.Medical focus on blood glucose misses the real problem. Insulin levels are rarely tested, yet elevated insulin drives disease years before blood sugar becomes abnormal.Fat cell size matters more than total fat. East Asians develop insulin resistance with less weight gain because they have fewer, larger fat cells versus more, smaller ones in Europeans.Insulin resistance causes brain starvation. When neurons can't access glucose due to insulin resistance, cognition declines — which is why some in the medical community refer to Alzheimer's as "type 3 diabetes."Type 2 diabetes is reversible through carb restriction. In one study, 11 newly diagnosed patients reversed their diabetes in 90 days by eating unlimited protein and fat, just limiting carbs. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! Alzheimer's is not inevitable—and it may even be optional. In this groundbreaking episode, you'll learn how to prevent, slow, and in some cases reverse cognitive decline using strategies that also enhance brain optimization, metabolism, and longevity. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey is joined by Dr. Dale Bredesen, a world-renowned neurologist and leading Alzheimer's researcher who has published over 240 peer-reviewed papers. Dr. Bredesen has spent decades proving that Alzheimer's is not a one-pathway disease but a network failure driven by inflammation, toxins, and mitochondrial dysfunction. His protocol has helped thousands of patients regain memory, extend healthspan, and reclaim brain performance. Together, they unpack how biohacking tools like fasting, ketosis, supplements, sleep optimization, cold therapy, and functional medicine can rewire neuroplasticity, protect mitochondria, and keep the brain in “connection mode” instead of decline. You'll hear why the pharmaceutical industry resists these solutions, how toxins like Paraquat and mold fuel cognitive decline, and what young people can do right now to bulletproof their brains for life. This episode is essential listening if you care about hacking human performance, upgrading metabolism, or extending longevity. You'll walk away with practical strategies you can use today—whether that means optimizing your mitochondria with nootropics, strengthening resilience with smarter not harder recovery, or fueling your brain with Danger Coffee. You'll Learn: • Why Alzheimer's can begin as early as your 20s and what biomarkers to track • The seven major drivers of Alzheimer's and how to reverse them with biohacking strategies • How APOE4 genetics, toxins, and inflammation accelerate brain aging—and what to do about it • The role of mitochondria, ketosis, and fasting in restoring brain optimization and neuroplasticity • Why prevention is exponentially easier than reversal and the top three actions you should start in your 20s • How to avoid “learned helplessness” in medicine and reclaim control over your brain span and longevity Dave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. With over 1,000 interviews and 1 million monthly listeners, The Human Upgrade is the top podcast for people who want to take control of their biology, extend their longevity, and optimize every system in the body and mind. This is a Fan Fav episode. How many times have you come across influencers and ads on social media promoting intermittent fasting for weight loss, increasing energy and feeling great? The issue for us as women is that we get half the story, none of the results we're really after and rarely does it turn into anything we can sustain over time. You're left feeling frustrated, anxious, still overweight and bloated, and more like your energy has taken a nosedive. The Fasting MD is on set this time with Lisa, Dr. Amy Shah, and the way she simplifies fasting for women that works in alignment with our cravings, our hormones and monthly cycles is seriously a Game Changer! Dr. Amy Shah is a double-board certified medical doctor specializing in food allergies, hormones and gut health. Her book, I'm So Effing Tired, is more like a groundbreaking blueprint for women to take control of their health like never before. In this episode Dr. Shah is laying out the foundational things we need to understand as women about our menstrual cycles and how to fast effectively to maximize your energy levels, your quality of sleep, and your hormones. Today is about how we stop fighting our biology, give ourselves grace, and learn to customize your approach to fasting, and why you'll want to start fasting, like today (or at least tomorrow). Key Pointers from Dr. Shah: 3-5 days Before Your Cycle: Avoid fasting, exercise, and big decisions - Eat high fiber, low glycemic foods. Focus on self care. Days 1-3 of your period - hormones are resetting, pay attention to how you are feeling. Day 14 of Your Monthly Cycle: Testosterone is spiking. Time to go harder on workout and make big confident bold moves during this time. How to Check-In with Yourself: How is your energy level? How is your sleep? How are your cravings? How are your hormones? It's nearly impossible to turn on the television or open a magazine without seeing advertisements for the latest weight loss trend: GLP-1 medications, commonly known as Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Zepbound. Approximately 15 million people are estimated to have tried these drugs for weight loss. However, as with any emerging health trend, it's important to consider whether these medications are safe and cost-effective.What are the risks and benefits of these drugs? Is the pharmaceutical industry providing a quick fix for the approximately 42% (or 100 million) U.S. citizens who are obese? Are these medications the only solution to the obesity epidemic, or are lifestyle and dietary changes essential for long-term success? Dr. Nicole Dorotik joins us in this episode to address these questions and more as we explore the latest trends in the pursuit of health and wellness.Special Guest: Dr. Nicole Dorotik Dr. Nicole Dorotik earned her medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine and completed her residency at Long Beach Memorial Hospital in Long Beach, California. Episode 2687 - Vinnie Tortorich welcomes Dr. Laura Buchanan to discuss fears behind the Women's Health Initiative and the many benefits of hormone therapy. https://vinnietortorich.com/2025/08/benefits-hormone-therapy-episode-2687 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - The Benefits of Hormone Therapy Lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the number of medications a person needs to take. (2:30) The number of drugs that are being prescribed keeps increasing; however, how much and for how long can the body take multiple medications without further debilitating the body? (7:00) Vinnie has questions about hormones. (14:00) The Women's Health Initiative announcement was based on incorrect information and a flawed study. The downside is that fear still surrounds it many decades later, so women have been denied treatment options. Dr. Buchanan explains how the study was done and the flaws within it. Hormone Therapy can be so impactful for a woman's life. (28:30) There are many options available today for estrogen, progesterone, and, if necessary, testosterone. Treatment can increase quality of life. Both transdermal and vaginal estrogen can be highly effective for all kinds of symptoms. (34:00) Vinnie asks about DHEA. (41:00) DHEA is more complicated because it's the precursor to the other hormones. Bioidentical hormones are regulated appropriately by the FDA. Testosterone does not appear to increase prostate cancer risk. However, if you are on treatment for metastatic prostate cancer, it should not be taken. (54:00) Systemic estrogen (as in patches) is approved for bone loss prevention. (57:00) It also helps decrease cardiovascular risk, anxiety and depression, dementia, diabetes, and many other health issues. The closer you start it to menopause, the more helpful it is. Women's health is complicated, isn't it? Between stress, hormones, and all the changes that come with midlife, it can feel like we're constantly trying to put puzzle pieces together without seeing the full picture. That's why I loved sitting down with Dr. Margaret Christensen to talk about what's really going on beneath the surface. She's sharing a perspective on health, intimacy, and connection that every woman deserves to hear. Dr. Margaret walked this journey herself. After facing serious health challenges from toxic mold exposure, she shifted from being a traditional OB-GYN to a leader in functional medicine. Now she helps women uncover the root causes of what's draining their energy, throwing off their hormones, and leaving them feeling disconnected. In our conversation, she opens up about midlife changes, hormone therapy, and how we can reclaim both our vitality and our joy. What really struck me was how she talks about sexuality and connection, not as something to be hidden or ignored, but as a powerful force for healing. We cover everything from navigating menopause to rekindling intimacy to why relationships are so key for our health. If you've ever felt like you're just pushing through midlife instead of thriving in it, this is a conversation you won't want to miss. And if you're ready for a little extra support, I'd love to have you in my 10-day Breeze Through Menopause masterclass, just $17 at dranna.com/breeze. Key Timestamps: [00:00:00] Introduction. Most people think iron is only a concern if they're deficient, but too much iron can be just as dangerous. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Christy Sutton, a leading figure in the study of iron imbalances, to explore the often-overlooked health epidemic of unrecognized iron overload. Anchored around her book, The Iron Curse, we discuss why outdated laboratory ranges often fail to detect these imbalances and why recognizing them is so crucial for long-term health. From there, we dive into the intricacies of iron metabolism and the need for updated functional health ranges tailored to healthy populations. Dr. Sutton explains how imbalances can signal underlying health problems and highlights the value of functional lab testing in catching issues conventional methods often miss. We also explore the role of genetic testing—especially for hereditary hemochromatosis—and how genetics and environmental factors work together to influence iron levels. Key Takeaways: Iron Imbalance Epidemic: Iron imbalances, particularly overload, are often underdiagnosed due to outdated lab ranges and misconceptions, representing a silent health epidemic. Functional vs. Conventional Ranges: Functional health ranges, as opposed to traditional lab ranges based on sick populations, are crucial for accurate diagnosis of iron-related health conditions. Importance of Genetic Testing: Genetic factors (hemochromatosis genes) play a significant role in iron overload, necessitating comprehensive testing beyond typical lab work. Dietary and Lifestyle Influences: Both high and low iron levels are influenced by diet, lifestyle, and, importantly, how iron interacts with other nutrients and lifestyle factors like exercise. Gender and Iron Requirements: Iron needs differ significantly by sex and life stages, with menstrual and post-menopausal women, as well as men, needing tailored iron management strategies. More About Dr. Christy Sutton, D.C.: Dr. Christy Sutton is interested in asking why health problems happen and finding the safest and least problematic solutions. Her work takes a deep and meaningful dive into genomics, labs testing and creating a personalized health plan. Her focus on finding and avoiding health landmines early stems from her personal experience with Crohn's and celiac disease plus her husband's experience with high iron, hemochromatosis, and a pituitary tumor that likely was associated with having undiagnosed hemochromatosis. "No one should suffer. I think a lot of cancer survivors get told, be thankful you're alive. We've got all these wonderful treatments. We will keep you alive and just deal with the side effects of treatments, and that just isn't true." - Dr. Mindy Goldman When I sat across from Dr. Mindy Goldman at dinner the night before Tamsen Fadal's World's Hottest Menopause Party, I knew I had to get her on the podcast. As someone who's spent decades watching women suffer in silence after breast cancer treatment—told just to be grateful they're alive while managing devastating menopausal symptoms—I was thrilled to meet someone breaking down these barriers, finally. Dr. Goldman has created something revolutionary: the only program in the country that bridges breast cancer care with menopause management, training over 300 providers to support survivors through virtual telehealth. We dive deep into the biggest myth plaguing women today—that ALL breast cancer survivors must avoid hormones forever—and she explains why that's simply not true for everyone. From the real truth about bioidentical hormones versus synthetic ones, to natural alternatives that actually work, to when testosterone might be safe, this conversation will arm you with the knowledge to have informed discussions with your healthcare team. Most importantly, you'll discover that suffering through treatment side effects isn't your only option. What you'll learn: Why "breast cancer is not breast cancer" and how different types affect hormone therapy decisions The real truth about bioidentical hormones versus the synthetic ones used in the Women's Health Initiative study Natural alternatives for managing hot flashes, sleep issues, and other menopause symptoms during cancer treatment How specific exercise protocols (including interval training) can actually help prevent cancer recurrence When vaginal estrogen might be safe even for hormone-positive breast cancer survivors Lifestyle factors that matter more than genetics for cancer prevention Why women with genetic mutations or family history can often still use hormone therapy How MIDI Health is revolutionizing care for cancer survivors in all 50 states Love the Podcast?
