For a long time, I shared pieces of my story online, but never the full picture. In this episode of The Daryl Perry Podcast, I finally sit down and share my experience growing up and living with cerebral palsy, how it influenced the way I view fitness, how it shaped my mindset, and why it ultimately led me to create Your Level Fitness.Living with cerebral palsy has impacted how I move, how I train, and how I approach my health. Even in its weakened state after two weeks of war, Iran maintains its chokehold on one of the most important shipping channels in the world: the Strait of Hormuz. Correspondent Cecilia Vega reports on the unprecedented closure of the 21-mile-wide waterway, which has stranded roughly 700 cargo ships and oil tankers in the Persian Gulf - increasing gas prices to their highest level in years. Iran has made extensive use of cheap drones in the war to menace the U.S. military and allies in the Persian Gulf. One emerging counter-drone solution is laser systems. Correspondent Lesley Stahl visits one Pentagon contractor developing such a system to explore how advanced lasers work and whether they are ready to be deployed. Sixteen years after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the government has all but collapsed and gangs battle for control of the capital Port-au-Prince. Correspondent Anderson Cooper visits an orphanage in the besieged city where children have been sheltered from the violence for more than four years. This week we're discussing Growing Up with a Solo Parent. One of the heaviest things a solo parent carries is not a task or a bill or a hard conversation. It is a question. The one that surfaces when the house is finally quiet and you have a moment to think. You wonder whether the circumstances your kids are growing up in, the things they are missing, the instability, the absence, the gaps you cannot fill on your own, will cost them something down the road that no amount of love can make up for. Robert Beeson, Founder and CEO of Solo Parent, and Elizabeth Cole, single parent, sit down with Andy Marshall, entrepreneur, Boys and Girls Club Hall of Fame inductee, and candidate for Williamson County Mayor. Andy's childhood was marked by instability, abuse, and loss. The odds were stacked against him in every direction. What he became anyway is worth paying attention to, not because his story wraps up neatly, but because of what it reveals about resilience, community, and the quiet ways God can work through even the most broken circumstances. For solo parents carrying the weight of what their kids might be missing, this conversation offers something more useful than reassurance. It offers perspective. Key Insights from This Episode: Children are shaped not only by what they have at home but by the people outside it who choose to see them. The adults who showed up consistently for Andy, coaches, neighbors, volunteers, quietly rebuilt what his home life was tearing down. Routine and predictability are not just practical tools. For kids in unstable homes, the simple consistency of a meal time or a homework check can feel like the first real safety they have known. A hard childhood does not have to become a tragic story. In the right hands, and with even one person who believes in you, the pressure and the struggle can become the very thing that builds something lasting. Nobody gets through a childhood like Andy's unscathed. But he closed by saying he doesn't look back on his life as a tragedy. He looks back on all the ways God placed people in his path to get him exactly where he was meant to be. That is something worth holding onto. Resources Mentioned in This Episode: A. Happy Sunday, Heal Squad! After yesterday's conversation about the three questions successful people ask before making big decisions, Kev goes down another rabbit hole… this time exploring two powerful questions Tony Robbins uses to uncover the role we learned to play in childhood! The discussion dives into how many of us unknowingly become the achiever, caretaker, peacemaker, or comedian in our families… and how those roles can quietly shape the decisions we make for the rest of our lives. Kev and Anne share some personal reflections about family dynamics, why some of us become the “fixer” or the “responsible one,” and the bigger question: is the role you learned as a kid still serving you, or running your life? Plus a few classic Sunday Setup tangents along the way… from silent meditation retreats to Easter candy and, of course, a little wrestling history. Talk shawtly! I've spent over 30 years in the food industry, but my relationship with what's on my plate started long before that, in the markets of Alexandria, Egypt. In this special episode, I'm sharing a conversation I had with Abby of One Potato, where we peel back the layers on something I believe in with my whole heart: food is agency, power, and responsibility. We get real about the moment my father's cancer diagnosis made food safety personal, and why my husband's health journey connected the dots back to the pesticides we accept as normal. For National Nutrition Month, we're cutting through the noise of fear-based diet culture to talk about what truly nourishes us. We discuss reclaiming carbs without guilt, the "racist" undertones of America's food rules, and how to raise kids who cook without turning mealtime into a battle. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the grocery store or wondered how to thrive in midlife instead of just shrinking, this is the conversation you need to hear. Born in Lviv in Ukraine, in 1958, Ihor grew up in a city where borders shifted, but memories endured. In this episode, he recalls a childhood shaped by silence, censorship, and family stories that could only be told in private. While official history came from Moscow, a very different past survived in the countryside—passed down by grandparents who had lived through empire, war, and occupation. This is a unique personal account of what it meant to grow up in Soviet Ukraine in the 1950s and 60s. Most people think real estate is easy money.Donny Samson knows better. He got his license at 22, just because a friend did it first and his wife said, "If he can do it, you can." His first two commissions paid for her engagement ring. He was hooked. But building a career is one thing. Building a company is another. When his dad handed him the keys to Samson Properties and made him CEO in 2019, Donny had to learn fast what separates a great realtor from a great leader. Spoiler: it's not the same skillset. He hired the wrong managers. He watched a title company he co-owned spend years digging out from bad hires and broken trust. He navigated a housing crash, a national lawsuit, and a real estate market that has posted record low sales three years in a row. And he kept going.Today Samson Properties is the number one brokerage in the DMV, with 6,500 agents across 49 offices. They built their own title company. They run on a 100% commission model. And Donny still shows up to teach in a different office every Wednesday. We covered:→ Why 83% of realtors don't make it past five years and what brokerages owe them→ How the private listings controversy is quietly hurting buyers and sellers→ What the NAR lawsuit actually changed (and what it didn't)→ Why he'd rather leave a manager seat empty for six months than hire the wrong person→ How he thinks about growth without losing what made the company worth growingThe thing that stuck with me most from this conversation: Donny never stopped thinking like a realtor. Even as CEO, he's still thinking about the person sitting across the table trying to buy or sell their biggest asset. That perspective is rare. It's also, I think, exactly why Samson keeps growing.Donny, thank you for being so open and for sharing your passion for this industry. I also appreciate you speaking directly about topics that many people in your position might avoid. Welcome back, WIFs!This week, Michelle and Lauren cozy up with one of their oldest friends from childhood — writer, storyteller, and stand-up comedian Bridget McGuire. What starts as a casual catch-up quickly turns into the kind of conversation that only happens when friends who grew up together start reminiscing about the good ole days. The sisters and Bridget take a stroll down memory lane, revisiting what it was like growing up in the western suburbs of Chicago in the 90s and the bond of friendships that somehow survive decades and different cities.Bridget shares the story behind her one-woman show Ballet Flats for Dinner, a deeply personal (and very funny) look at her life with OCD. The three talk about turning real life into comedy, why vulnerability can be hilarious, and how storytelling connects us all. From 90s suburban nostalgia to stand-up comedy and creative storytelling, this episode is a cozy reminder that some friendships — and some stories — only get better with time.Press play, get cozy, and enjoy this catch-up with an old friend.Resources: Follow Us!Shop Our Candle Line!Check Out Our Website! This episode is sponsored by Posey Law Group and Chicago Private Wealth Group.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes. Following 2024's Happiness Bastards, the Black Crowes got straight to work. In early 2025, the Robinson brothers traveled to Nashville to reunite with producer Jay Joyce and build on the momentum of their last album. The resulting A Pound of Feathers captures a similar energy, full of swaggering rock that, as Robinson tells it, “hits harder, more jagged, but is still true to our musical essence.” Before heading out on an extensive tour, the frontman stopped by the Artist Friendly studio for a conversation about grief, rebuilding the Black Crowes, and making their newest record in under two weeks. ------- Chapters (0:00) Intro (4:03) The Southern Music Scene vs. Everywhere Else (7:40) When It Was Just About Making Records (9:21) The Craft of Live Performance (11:31) How Chris Robinson's Dad Shaped His Sound (13:00) Record Collecting & Discovering New Sounds (18:20) Music as a Language (20:06) Why So Many Artists Quit (24:59) “A Mind Blown Is a Mind Shown” (27:16) Is Chris Robinson a Poet? On Episode 3 of Season 9 of The Surviving Siblings Podcast®, host Maya Roffler is joined by Gyani, a surviving sibling and grief professional, who shares the story of losing his brother, Pete, to cancer, and how earlier loss in his life shaped the path he walks today. Gyani takes us back to his first encounter with grief at 13, when his father died of cancer. Raised in what he describes as a "Leave It to Beaver" style family. Mom, dad, and five boys—he reflects on how grief rippled through their family system like a bomb, in a time when there were few tools or conversations available to help a young boy process loss. A few years later, Gyani found his way into meditation, yoga, and wisdom traditions, an unexpected but life-changing shift that became a foundation for everything that followed. Decades later, after building a career in counseling and the corporate world, Gyani felt an internal nudge that it was time for a new chapter. Then came a loss that re-opened the "great beast of grief" in a fresh way: the death of his baby brother, Pete. Gyani shares how Pete's cancer moved fast—from a melanoma diagnosis to death within roughly a year—and how helplessness, family dynamics, and the inability to "make people come to the grief table" became part of his grieving process. This conversation is a powerful reminder that grief is not a problem to solve, but an experience that asks to be witnessed—by others, and by ourselves—with compassion, patience, and attention. In This Episode: (0:00:00) – Meet Gyani + The Loss That Started It All Gyani introduces himself, shares that he works in the grief space, and reflects on losing his father to cancer at age 13. (0:01:30) – Growing Up in a Family of Five Boys Gyani describes his family system, his place as the fourth of five brothers, and how grief impacted their "sports team" dynamic. (0:03:30) – A Teenager Finds Meditation + Meaning Gyani shares how he found meditation, yoga, and wisdom traditions in high school—seeking something "deathless" after losing his dad. (0:06:00) – Grief Doesn't Come With a Manual Maya and Gyani discuss how grief shapes you early, how people cope differently, and why many families lack the tools to process loss. (0:10:00) – How Gyani Entered the Grief Space Professionally Gyani explains how his meditation practice and counseling training eventually converged—after years in the corporate world—into grief-focused work. (0:12:30) – Asking "What's Next?" + Listening for the Answer Gyani shares his transition season, spending time in nature and intentionally seeking clarity for his next chapter. (0:24:30) – Pete: "It's Powerful to Say His Name" Gyani introduces his brother Pete, their bond, growing up together, and why Pete was his "rock." (0:26:00) – From Melanoma to Loss: A Fast Cancer Journey Gyani walks through Pete's diagnosis, how quickly it spread, and the shock of losing a healthy, vibrant brother. (0:28:30) – Helplessness, Anger, and the Storm of Grief Gyani reflects on the layers of grief—including the raw helplessness that remains when you realize you can't change the outcome. (0:30:00) – Family Dynamics: You Can't Drag People to the Grief Table Gyani and Maya discuss how differently siblings and families grieve—and the pain of wanting connection when others shut down. (0:35:30) – Community as Medicine: Why Grief Must Be Witnessed Gyani shares why grief + isolation is a "double whammy," and how community helps thaw shame and soften the nervous system. (0:43:30) – What Gyani's Grief Work Looks Like Today He shares how mindfulness-informed grief counseling helps people gently lean into grief, including working with the body ("issues are in the tissues"). (0:47:30) – A Closing Reminder: Grief Isn't a Problem to Solve Gyani offers a powerful reframe: grief is a sacred opportunity to be embraced—and it changes you into new versions of yourself. In this episode of MiCannaCast, we sit down with Jake Greba— founder of Midnight Roots, longtime legacy cultivator, edible pioneer, and music producer Bass Owl — for a deep, wide-ranging conversation about cannabis culture, genetics, medicine, creativity, and the journey from underground roots to the modern legal market.Jake shares powerful personal stories about growing up in a cannabis family, using the plant to help loved ones through serious medical conditions, navigating the pre-legal era, and building a respected brand rooted in authenticity rather than hype.We also dive into strain selection philosophy, terpene appreciation, why THC percentage doesn't equal quality, the dilution of genetics in today's market, and how cannabis connects to memory, ritual, and community.Beyond cannabis, the conversation explores Jake's parallel life in music — touring, producing bass music, and the creative mindset that links art and cultivation. If you care about legacy cannabis culture, real genetics, meaningful consumption, or the intersection of creativity and plant medicine, this episode delivers one of the deepest conversations we've had on the show.
What happens when Christians stop thinking for themselves — and hand that job to AI? In this episode of Refining Rhetoric, host Robert Bortins sits down with Dr. Ben Holloway — philosopher, professor at Judson College at Southeastern Seminary, and incoming Bruce Little Chair of Christian Philosophy — to explore why classical Christian education depends on mastering language, logic, and the great books. From defending the faith against hard questions to why you simply cannot outsource your thinking to a machine, this is a conversation that will challenge and equip every homeschool family to love wisdom and pursue truth. Dr. Ben Holloway grew up in England, spent his 20s playing in a band and preaching the gospel with no formal education, then moved to America at 34 with his wife, two kids, and 29 boxes — and started his bachelor's degree at Moody Bible Institute. That late-in-life educational journey shapes everything about how he teaches and what he believes education is for. The conversation opens with a rich discussion of Christian philosophy — not as an abstract academic exercise, but as the indispensable tool Christians have always used to answer the questions the Bible doesn't directly address. From the early church borrowing the language of "substance" and "persons" from Greek philosophy to describe the Trinity, to the everyday challenge of interpreting a difficult passage of Scripture, philosophy and language are inescapably central to the Christian life. Dr. Holloway makes a compelling case that language is foundational to how we know God. Because God chose to reveal himself through 66 books, Christians are permanently and inescapably committed to the hard work of interpretation. You cannot outsource that to anyone — and certainly not to AI. He explains that AI isn't a reasoning machine; it's a pattern-matching product built to please customers, not to pursue truth. Students who try to use it before developing their own thinking ability won't just miss the learning — they'll also be incapable of evaluating what AI produces. What You'll Learn: - What Christian philosophy actually is — and why you can't do good theology without it - Why language is one of the most mysterious and important features of God's creation - How to read the Bible the way the author intended — not just the way it "speaks to you" - Three practical techniques for interpreting any difficult text correctly - Why Christians specifically cannot outsource their thinking to AI — and what's at stake if they try - Why using AI before you've learned to think is worse than not using it at all - The surprising connection between Homer's *Iliad* and the biblical meaning of glory and honor - Why hard-earned education is one of God's greatest gifts — and what we rob students of when we shortcut it 00:00 — Introduction & Dr. Holloway's Background 01:44 — Growing Up in England, Ministry Without a Degree & Coming to America 03:11 — Discovering a Calling to Teach at Moody Bible Institute 04:22 — What Makes Judson College Unique: Theory Meets Practice 05:07 — What Is Christian Philosophy — and Why Does It Matter? 06:27 — How the Early Church Used Philosophy to Describe the Trinity 08:26 — Language, God's Creation & Why It's So Mysterious 10:07 — How Language Connects to Truth and Education 12:11 — Why Christians Can't Outsource Bible Reading to AI 13:43 — Who Gets to Fix the Meaning of a Text? Viewer discretion advised. Today's episode is a unique one. I sit down with someone from the adult film industry and we have a real, honest conversation about life, faith, and where he's at in his journey. I also get the chance to share the gospel and simply spend time getting to know him. We understand this topic may feel sensitive for some, and we respect wherever you're at. Losing your way can sometimes be the beginning of finding who you really are. Robert Pallante's life revolved around hockey from a young age. Growing up in the Toronto area, he played at the highest levels, earned a college scholarship, and chased the dream so many young athletes believe defines them. But when his hockey journey didn't unfold the way he expected, Rob was left struggling with identity, confidence, and unanswered questions that followed him long after he left the game. Years later, a near-fatal motorcycle accident forced Robert into stillness, reflection, and a complete reset. Lying in a hospital bed fighting for his life, he realized he was under no obligation to remain the person he had been. This episode explores what it means to separate who you are from what you do, how pain can become perspective, and why rebuilding your identity is possible at any stage of life. Guest Bio Robert Pallante grew up in Mississauga, Ontario, where hockey shaped much of his early life. Drafted into the OHL and later earning a scholarship to Michigan Tech, Robert pursued the sport at a high level before continuing into junior and professional camps. After leaving hockey, he spent over two decades building a successful career in sales, business development, and corporate leadership. In 2015, Robert survived a near-death motorcycle accident that led to eight surgeries, 40 days in the hospital, and years of rehabilitation. That experience became a turning point, reshaping his priorities and purpose. Today, Robert works with young athletes to help them build an invincible mindset, develop strong values, and prepare for life both during and after sports. He is a single father to two children, Luca and Ava. Patrick Champion grew up in Florida in what most people would consider a good family, but as a teenager he began getting into trouble, running away from home, and pushing boundaries his parents didn't know how to handle. Eventually they made a decision that would change the course of his life forever. In the middle of the night, Patrick was kidnapped from his home and transported to Tranquility Bay in Jamaica, one of the most controversial programs tied to the troubled teen industry. What was supposed to be discipline quickly turned into something much darker. Patrick spent nearly a year inside the program where he says he experienced abuse, neglect, extreme punishments, and psychological control while being cut off from the outside world. The experience left deep scars that followed him long after he returned home. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, Patrick shares what really happened inside Tranquility Bay, how that experience derailed his life, led him into addiction and crime, and eventually resulted in a 10-year prison sentence in Florida. _____________________________________________ #ianbick #lockedinpodcast #tranquilitybay #troubledteenindustry #prisonstory #truecrimepodcast #kidnappedteen #prisonsurvival _____________________________________________ Connect with Patrick Champion: Instagram: @championfamily2020 YouTube: @UrFriendlyFelon Tiktok: @lastnamechampionnn _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Shop Locked In Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Kidnapped in the Middle of the Night 03:01 Childhood Trauma and Family Turmoil 08:00 Growing Up in a Broken Home 13:00 School Trouble and Behavior Issues 19:00 My Reckless Teenage Years 26:59 Running Away and Living with My Dad 34:00 The Plan to Send Me Away 38:38 How I Got Sent to Tranquility Bay in Jamaica 45:11 Arriving at Tranquility Bay Teen Program 51:00 Surviving Tranquility Bay and the Troubled Teen Industry 01:03:00 Trying to Work the Program and Planning Escape 01:13:00 Restraints, Isolation, and Punishment 01:23:00 Losing Hope Inside Tranquility Bay 01:27:00 Returning Home After the Program 01:32:00 The Downward Spiral to Prison 01:41:00 Prison vs Tranquility Bay: What Was Worse? 01:51:00 Rebuilding Life After Prison 01:57:00 Recovery, Support, and Healing 02:00:00 Moving Forward and Helping Others Learn more about your ad choices. Domestic Dad Cleaning Up The Mess | Sobriety, Parenting, Dad, Addiction, Recovery,
In this powerful and deeply personal episode of Domestic Dad: Cleaning Up The Mess, host Nick Barnett sits down with Keith Jeffries to unpack a story marked by addiction, heartbreak, spiritual awakening, and the life-changing power of surrendering to God. Keith shares openly about growing up in a loving home that lacked a spiritual foundation, and how his desire for acceptance and belonging led him down a destructive path at an early age. What began with drinking as a teenager quickly escalated into marijuana, prescription pills, heroin, and eventually years of meth addiction. Through his brutally honest reflection, Keith reveals how addiction slowly eroded his relationships, fueled selfish choices, and left him feeling empty despite outward success. Nick and Keith explore the deep wounds that often live beneath addiction—including father wounds, unresolved anger, and the quiet shame that lingers long after the chaos of substance abuse fades. Keith reflects on the painful realization that the scars addicts leave on others can be some of the hardest burdens to carry in sobriety. The turning point in Keith's story came during one of the darkest moments of his life. After years of addiction and the loss of his father, Keith found himself sitting alone with a gun in his hand, ready to end everything. Instead, in a moment he still struggles to fully explain, he fired the gun into the floor—an act that became a permanent reminder of the life he almost lost. Soon after, Keith attended a men's event called The Launching Pad in Dallas, Texas, where he experienced a powerful encounter with God that would change everything. In that moment of surrender, the addictions that once controlled him were broken, and Keith began a new journey of faith, obedience, and purpose. But the journey wasn't without heartbreak. After five years of infertility, Keith and his wife Kayla experienced the joy of discovering they were pregnant with twins—only to lose both babies to miscarriage weeks later. In one of the most painful seasons of their lives, they made the difficult decision to remain faithful and obedient to God, trusting that He still had a plan for their family. Today, Keith lives a completely transformed life—devoted to his faith, his marriage, and helping other men find freedom from addiction and hopelessness. His story is a powerful reminder that no matter how far someone believes they have fallen, redemption is always possible. Through honest conversation, Nick and Keith discuss the role of obedience, the importance of brotherhood and accountability, and the incredible ways God reveals Himself when people choose faith over fear. This episode is a raw and inspiring testimony that no one is too far gone for grace—and that sometimes the greatest miracles come after the darkest moments.

What if healing from purity culture requires more than naming how you were hurt? What if it also means asking how you participated? In this episode, Dr. Dan Allender and Rachael Clinton Chen sit down with their colleague Dr. Lauren Sawyer, to explore her new book, Growing Up Pure. Lauren names something many haven't had language for: as teens, we weren't only victims of purity culture; we were also moral agents within it. We made choices. We found belonging. We sometimes resisted in small ways. And at times, we participated in systems that harmed others and ourselves. That tension between vulnerability and agency, harm and complicity can feel destabilizing. Yet Lauren invites us to see accountability not as punishment, but as a sacred, even hopeful, practice. What if repentance wasn't shame-driven, but a pathway toward integration? What if healing meant not only tending to the wounds purity culture caused, but also examining how we were formed by—and sometimes upheld—it? This episode is honest, nuanced, and tender. It creates space to grieve the damage of purity culture while also imagining a different story. One rooted in the belief that we are made in the image of God as embodied, relational, sexual beings… and that restoration is possible. Sara shares her path from 21 years teaching to writing full-time, her Springsteen origin story rooted in hearing “Atlantic City” during a difficult college week, and her family's deep reading culture. She recounts seeing Bruce live (including being pulled onstage in Charlottesville in 2012 with a “Can I dance with Jake?” sign), attending dozens of shows, favorite songs and albums (especially Born to Run and “Backstreets”), and sending Bruce a copy of her novel Don't Forget to Write featuring a brief Bruce cameo. They discuss Sara's focus on humorous, intergenerational stories with strong female characters and “Jewish joy,” including why she writes Jewish characters beyond suffering narratives and how her novels highlight the recentness of women's legal and social limitations. Sara previews upcoming projects, including her June 9 release Off the Record about a young woman in a 1960s newspaper typing pool who uncovers a Cuban spy plot, plus a planned 2027 novel centered on the Beatles' first U.S. concert after Ed Sullivan.
