Post-Dispatch podcasts page: https://go.stltoday.com/0hfn43 Please consider subscribing: https://go.stltoday.com/9aigz5 After his barehanded play on a slow-rolling grounder ended Tuesday night's game against the Cubs with a stirring, 8-7 Cardinals victory, third baseman Nolan Arenado talked about how much it meant to play meaningful, tense, important games against an archrival. He said he woke up excited, and hadn't been this eager to get to the ballpark in almost two years. A day early, Cubs manager Craig Counsell said he wouldn't be the "hype man" for the series. The oldest rivalry in Major League Baseball between two teams that have not left their cities, Cubs-Cardinals was long defined by one team's brand as champion and the other as lovable losers, but that's so Y2K, man. Now the rivalry happens in cycles, and for the first time in several years the Cardinals and Cubs were snug in the standings when they played this past week at Busch Stadium. Does that give the rivalry renewed verve, or does the change in schedule make it just another division series?  Chicago Tribune baseball writer and Cubs beat writer Meghan Montemurro joins the Best Podcast in Baseball for a conversation at Busch Stadium (listen to that determined A/C) about the current state of the rivalry and if it has the same heat in Chicago that it experienced from the St. Louis side this past week. The pressure is on the Cardinals to chase down the Cubs, and the pressure on the Cubs, with only one guaranteed year of standout player Kyle Tucker, appears to be on winning and advancing in October now.  How should that shape their trade deadline decisions? How can they shape the Cardinals' trade deadline decisions? Cubs president Jed Hoyer is in the final year of his contract, and Cardinals president John Mozeliak is in the final year of his tenure leading the Cardinals' baseball operations. Change is coming, potentially to both teams, adding another twist to the rivalry. Plus, BPIB host Derrick Goold, asks Montemurro about his theory that maybe instead of the National League Central rivals spurring the Cubs to spend like a bigger market it will be their neighborhoods on the South Side as the White Sox welcome in a new investor. A split four-game series at Busch Stadium between the Cardinals and Cubs left nothing settled between the two teams, and the final game of the series (a 3-0 victory and second consecutive shutout by the Cubs) ended with both teams emptying their dugouts to almost confront each on the field. Tempers cooled quickly, but the stage is set for their next week within two weeks for Fourth of July at Wrigley Field. Will there be fireworks? The Best Podcast in Baseball, in its 13th year as one of the leading baseball podcasts, is sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis. It is a production of StlToday.com, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and Derrick Goold.

Thank God for the disruptors. Innovators move the world forward—governments either resist, exploit, or try to co-opt their success. Trump is the political disruptor who proved the system can be broken."Change doesn't happen by asking nicely—it happens when someone flips the table. Learn if the very instincts that kept humanity alive are now keeping you from truly living. For 290,000 years, we survived by playing it safe, following the tribe, and hoarding resources. These weren't character flaws—they were survival strategies in a world where innovation could mean death. The scarcity mindset that once threatened our ancestors' survival now threatens our potential. The tribal conformity that once protected us now prevents breakthrough thinking. The focused attention that once saved lives now creates cognitive tunnels. This episode goes beyond history to recognise the invisible forces shaping your choices and breaking out of survival mode. ------- NEW SHOW - How to Change the World Sam's new show can be found on major podcast players: Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/1Fj3eFjEoAEKF5lWQxPJyT Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-change-the-world-the-history-of-innovation/id1815282649 YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@HowToChangeTheWorldPodcast Can't find it on your player? Identifying where our problems originate is one thing, but locating the Divine Healer is key in getting clear of obstacles in our lives. At each mile marker in our life journeys, God is standing alongside the road, smiling at us, and holding out His strong hand to guide us. And from the indispensable wisdom of scripture to stories of human triumphs over tragedies, He is always there reminding us we're never truly alone. His grace and mercies begin to overshadow and overwhelm those forces that want to harm us, and it's then that we see God for who He truly is. 1 Peter 5:10 says, “And after you've suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” And that is Good News! Let's pray. Lord, it's important to see who our enemy is, but it's more important to look past that and concentrate our focus on you who brings us that peace that passes all understanding, the kind that gets down deep in us and calms us from the inside out. Change. It can be exciting. It can also be tough. And it happens a lot in international schools. At first, new ideas and the buzz around implementing them can feel electrifying. But here's the catch: often, the people involved, the processes, and the long-term sustainability of these ideas—whether they're initiatives or programs—don't quite make it past the starting line. So, why does this happen? And how do we successfully navigate the twists and turns of the change process? Audrey and David have been through countless new initiatives in schools over the years, and we have often wondered what makes some changes "stick" while others fall flat. That curiosity led us to Dr. Jim Reese. Many of you may know Jim, either as the previous facilitator of the Harvard Project Zero Summer Institutes or as a trusted consultant in your own school.Jim lives in Washington, DC. After a long career teaching in international and U.S.  schools, he now works as a consultant with schools, museums, and educational organizations. Jim has a long-term affiliation with Project Zero, a research group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In 2004, along with Dr. David Perkins from Harvard, Jim co-authored an article about managing change in a school to help it last. The article was called "When Change Has Legs: Four key factors help determine whether change efforts will be sustained over time." Each "leg" refers to one aspect of the change; all 4 are required for the change to last. Our guiding question for the episode was, “What are proven ways to bring about sustainable change in international schools?”The Four Legs of Sustainable Change are:Frameworks — Structures that guide and support learningLeaders — People who champion and drive the processCommunity — Collective buy-in and engagement from everyone involvedInstitutionalization — Embedding change so it becomes part of the school's DNAResources cited in the episode: When Change Has LegsHarvard Project ZeroEdtech Co-Op Podcast interview with Jim (2015) Professional Development Collaborative at Washington International School Jim's Contact Information: LinkedInCategories: PD | Leadership | School Change This episode was recorded on April 14th, 2025. When fear takes control, God just crushes it.None of us are immune from feeling unsettled at times. Circumstances have a way of knocking us off balance. How we respond not only affects our lives, but those who are watching us.In the film “The Patriot,” a Colonial militia leader sees the British kidnap his son. Taking the two younger sons with him, they wait in ambush in the forest. One of the sons is rattled and crying, so the father puts his hands on the boy's shoulders, looks him in the eyes, and says, “Steady.” Fear drains from the boy's face.In that moment of terror for the whole family, the father's example won the day, and their day ended well.In 2 Timothy 1:7, we learn the source of calm. It says this: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and a sound mind.”God has given you a spirit of power, love, and a good mind. So don't let fear, the enemy, or the world intimidate you when it comes to sharing your faith. Speak God's truth with boldness, and love. Your moment will come one day, and by keeping in mind the truth of God's word, courage will overcome fear.Notice the qualities mentioned in Second Timothy. God has actually given us courage, but also power, and a sound mind—also phrased as self-discipline. And discipline will help keep you steady in a crisis. That spirit of power actually does our fighting for us, and it is the enemy who is afraid.Let's pray.Father, you are good to us. Just as Jesus modeled for us how to handle fear when he prayed in the garden, we know that you have our back, and we can be courageous. Thank you for a sound mind and a calm heart in times of trouble. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world! Yet, it's the thing we tend to fear the most.Change is the law of life. When you can't change a situation, it's a challenge to change yourself. I know from life and certainly from doing this show that change is inevitable and it's constant. It may appear to not happen for an instant or two, the snapshot I call it. But the video keeps playing. And though some change is incremental, it's happening. We can adapt to most of it, to control it to a degree. But then life happens.Perhaps that 11-year old seems like the perfect child. Then something happens at 12. Or maybe the job is going well, then they hire a new person, or your boss moves on, and you get a new one.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

No one is truly alone. Some people have many relatives and friends, others just a few. Occasionally, someone will have no real friends or family, but all of us interact with humans, and that over time has proven to be dicey. The health of our relationships is one of the biggest factors in how we function each day. Turmoil and chaos at home or work, or both, puts us in emotional quicksand. On the other hand, healthy relationships in our lives improve our overall health and make us more productive. In Genesis, God modeled right relationships for humans, and this model continues through the Bible right to the end in Revelation. From this, we see that our first priority in relationships is to be in fellowship with our Creator. Get that one right and everything else flows. Following close behind is finding harmony in our human relationships, and getting this right is crucial to finding peace. Ephesians 4:2–3 says, “Be completely humble and gentle. Be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”Most people are familiar with the well-known Bible verses that deal with relationships, such as Paul's wisdom from Ephesians, but Scripture is loaded with helpful and healing relationship commands. We hesitate to call it advice because God doesn't really give advice. He tells us what is good for us and what may be harmful. For example, a fairly obscure passage in Job speaks to mean in any era having healthy relationships with women. In Job 31:1 the suffering man says, “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman.” Wow. So simple, yet very important and profound. That chapter goes on to say that God sees all that we do. He's watching how we treat people. Job made it clear that a man can decide he's going to treat women with respect. It isn't complicated or beyond our reach. So often, simply deciding to be a decent human being leads to waves of healing and peace of mind for everyone. Lots of books have been written about relationships, from marriage to raising children, but the best book of all has the best wisdom, and if you check that out, your relationships will thank you. Let's pray.Father God, you've given us the gift of interacting with other people. Each is unique and created special. We ask that you send the Holy Spirit to guide our relationships so that they're pleasing to you and to others. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world! Save 15% Off your entire purchase of faith-based apparel + gifts at Kerusso.com with code KDD15.

“Freedom is the open window through which pours the sunlight of the human spirit and of human dignity.” — Herbert Hoover Check Out These Highlights: The word "freedom" has different meanings for different people. For me, it means having the opportunity and the choice to do what I do every day. My dad came to this country from Italy when he was 20. Growing up, he used to tell us that we could do anything we chose. He also shared that since we have the freedom in this country, he taught us to work hard and show up every day. Be honest and kind, and do the right thing. So, for me, freedom doesn't mean doing what I want at the cost of hurting someone else. All these lessons have allowed me to make choices that were right for me and my family. Some worked out well, and others were life lessons that helped me grow and become the person I am today. Not My Narrative – “The Bootstraps Narrative” (Pilot Episode)

This week, we're trying something new: instead of our usual Next City episode, we're sharing the pilot for “Not My Narrative,” an experimental mini-series that not only debunks harmful myths holding back progress but also elevates the counter-narratives driving positive momentum. In this debut episode of Not My Narrative, Host Lucas Grindley, Executive Director of Next City, takes listeners on an examination of one of America's most pernicious myths: the “pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps” mantra that claims anyone who works hard enough can escape poverty. We trace its origins from 19th-century satire to Reagan, Gingrich, and Clinton, and we'll hear from practitioners who say the “bootstrap” story is quietly determining who merits public assistance, who deserves our sympathy, and who must simply fend for themselves. To unravel its origins and expose its consequences, Luis Ortega, founder of Storytellers for Change, draws on his background in education and community organizing to explain how the bootstraps narrative is woven into our schools, our public discourse, and even our own self-perception. He challenges us to see that when achievement is framed solely as personal grit, it erases entire ecosystems of support—families, neighbors, networks—that actually make success possible.Plus, we revisit two Next City interviews that show what “it takes a village” truly means, as communities care for one another. In Jackson, Mississippi, Aisha Nyandoro, co-founder of Magnolia Mother's Trust, shares how her guaranteed-income pilot for Black mothers demonstrates that material support and dignity go hand in hand. And we revisit a conversation out of Portland, Oregon, where Lisa Larson, vice-chair of Dignity Village, recounts her journey from sleeping on the streets to helping govern a community for the unhoused. If you believe in the power of narrative change—and want more episodes that debunk harmful myths while elevating real-world solutions—please email us at info@nextcity.org and let's think about ways to keep this work going.

Trust. It's yet another essential ingredient in building and sustaining elite teams. This week on The Mark Divine Show, Mark does a deep dive into the art and science of trust, drawing from his rich experience with the Navy SEALs, and his book “Staring Down The Wolf”.    Mark shares tales that unveil the true nature of leadership when things go sideways, and unpacks the three foundational pillars of trust—transparency, humility, and relentless follow-through. He discusses how authentic leadership is forged by facing down fears—-particularly the fear of failure.    Using insights from the military and his own personal growth journey, Mark issues a call to action for leaders everywhere to look inward, trust themselves first, and lead with character and courage.   Key Takeaways:  Relentless Follow-Through: Understand that trust is cemented when leaders do what they say, support their teams, and make sure crucial lessons lead to real action and positive change.   Facing The Fear of Failure: Realize that  leaders who are afraid of failure tend to become perfectionists, procrastinators, or careerists, which ultimately weakens teams and limits growth. Authenticity Matters: Recognize that staying authentic, consistent, and operating from humility will spread trust throughout your team.   Trust is Critical in Team Performance: Discover how trust acts as the “glue” for elite teams, and the consequences of lacking it can be mediocrity and underperformance.   Mark Divine is a former Navy SEAL Commander, entrepreneur, and NYT Bestselling author with PhD in Global Leadership and Change who has dedicated his life to unlocking human potential through integrated training in mental toughness, leadership, and physical readiness. Mark's journey began in New York City, where his fascination with eastern philosophy and martial arts set the stage for a transformative path. After a successful stint as a consultant at PriceWaterhouse Coopers, he made the pivotal decision to join the Navy SEALs at 25. Over two decades of service, Mark commanded critical missions globally, retiring as a Commander in 2011. Mark has trained elite organizations including Google, Nike, SpaceX, Boeing, Harvard University, The Olympics, YPO, and many others.Co-founding ventures such as SEALFIT, Unbeatable Mind, LLC, and Coronado Brewing Company have allowed Mark to blend his military expertise with entrepreneurial spirit. SEALFIT, born from his SEAL training insights, revolutionized physical and mental conditioning, impacting diverse groups from executives to athletes.Inspired by his military service, Mark founded the Courage Foundation to support veterans in holistic healing and restoration of purpose.
