Christmas carols are, likely, some of the earliest songs most Americans learn, and at the same time, are probably among the earliest music still performed in popular American culture. Many of the familiar songs of the season date back hundreds of years, and the origins and lyrics of the songs have been lost or changed over time. We sing along every year, tapping into those familiar nostalgic feelings. But do we really know where these festive songs came from, or what they're actually about? Gather ye kith and kin around the hearth – or the modern equivalent, the Bluetooth speaker – as the Great Pop Culture Debate explores the history of holiday staples and attempts to name the Best Traditional Christmas Carol.Songs discussed: “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” “O Tannenbaum/O Christmas Tree,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “Away in a Manger,” “Carol of the Bells,” “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” “Here We Come A-Wassailing,” “Jingle Bells,” “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen,” “The First Noel,” “Silent Night,” “Do You Hear What I Hear?” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “Little Drummer Boy,” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” “Joy to the World”Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Trey Radu-Blackburn and Zack Derby as they discuss and debate 16 of the most recognizable holiday carols of all time.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

What's up, dudes? There's nothing like a Christmas jazz house song to kick off a party. I've got Steve Beech of Uplifting House Sessions with me to dive into the opening track of Winter Warnerland! Yes, we're talking Jeff Lorber “God Rest the House!”Jeff Lorber is an American keyboardist and composer specializing in jazz and fusion. After attending the Berklee College of Music, he played with Michael Brecker and John Scofield. Eventually he started Jeff Lorber Fusion and released his first album in 1977. He frequently played on Rhodes, Minimoog, and Prophet 5 keyboards. He subsequently went solo and had several singles on Billboard Dance charts. As the Winter Warnerland liner notes state:“He's the guy who first brought you Karen White with their smash hit, The Facts of Love. Kenny G, his former sax player and right now is one of the hottest session cats out there. You can hear his magic touch on current hits from U2, Pebbles, New Edition, Giant Steps, New Shoes, The California Raisins, Sheena Easton and Jeffrey Osborne. Those are just the ones he's played on this month. And you know he's saving up the good stuff for his next WB LP due sometime in 89. Even though he's a busy guy, he managed to crank out a hot house mix version of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen for us. Turn it up!”Driving bass line? Check. Syncopated version of the melody? Got it. Minor pentatonics, blues scale embellishments, and occasional chromatic triplets? Definitely! So grab your Yamaha GS-1, and jam out to this episode on Jeff Lorber “God Rest the House!”Uplifting House SessionsYouTube: @UpliftinghouseSessionsIG: @upliftinghousesessionsGive us a buzz! I'm feeling a tiny bit too gassed to look it up, but I think this is maybe the fourth-consecutive episode of the podcast to drop on Thanksgiving.Thursdays aren't fantastic for metrics it seems, but what's more likely is that this thing just isn't really marketable in terms of audience growth. And that's okay. There was never a pipe dream to have it all blow up. It's always been about connecting with people and sharing stories. And I'm pretty proud to be closing in on 200 episodes/four years of sittin' down with folks to talk about life and music.Point being, nobody's really paying attention to anything on Thanksgiving; they're all movin' around and preparing and whatnot. Most folks, anyway. And I want to give a special shoutout to those that aren't: To those that have spent or do spend this particular holiday without friends or without loved ones -- shouts out to you. You are loved, even if sediments of solitude occupy a portion of your day. Or your life.I don't know how the way current times feel compares to The Depression or Civil Rights or the late '70s when there were gas lines or any of the rest of it. I just know that it makes me a little sad everyday that people are being ugly to each other. It almost feels criminal to discover yourself enjoying something like a little time away from the grind when there are people out there that would give anything to have the grind be a part of their lives. So, I'd like to just...share a human moment, and say that I appreciate all of you that are currently inhabiting the planet. I mean, if you're fuckin' with other people and doin' creepy shit that ain't kosher -- well -- knock that off.People in traffic annoy me often. Same with comments-section campers. And don't get me started on the homeslices and the girlfriends that think that what's happening in the United States right now is fine. Lemme tell ya': Fine would be fantastic. Shit's "pretty fuckin' far from okay."So hopefully today some of you can wiggle yourself into that once-familiar feeling of things being okay, and you can enjoy your sweet potatoes, and compliment the pie crust, and -- of course -- offer to do the dishes.Anyway...Matthew Naquin is this week's guest. He was kind enough to share some of a Tuesday evening with me a couple of weeks ago, and together we hammered out Episode No. 192.We talked about his illustrations (Check him out on Instagram at @thesanmateo.), his music (thesanmateo.com plus Bandcamp, Spotify, and Apple Music), life, family, comedy, and a bunch more, including a few of his favorite records, which were these:U2's The Joshua Tree (1987)Gentlemen (1993), The Afghan WigsPortishead's Dummy (1994)F# A# Infinity (1997), Godspeed You! Black EmperorRadiohead's Amnesiac (2001)Check out our chat, and check out all things Matthew Naquin/San Mateo. Happy Thanksgiving Week, everyone! Today I'll be reading a Thanksgiving story titled "Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen" by the legendary short story master O. Henry. It's a funny and thoughtful tale about two men bound by tradition… but I won't spoil anything! After the story, I chat a bit about our own traditions and ask an important question: Is it okay for some traditions to come to an end? I also share a Christmas book recommendation and talk about Words Christmas Gave Us by Grace Tierney. You can listen to my interview with her in last week's episode! Listen along as Dr. Michael Goheen continues our series through Acts. Notes//Quotes: Acts 19:21-41 - Jack 21 Once all this had been finished, Paul decided in his spirit to go back through Macedonia and Achaea and, from there, on to Jerusalem. “After I've been there,” he said, “I really must go and see Rome.” 22 He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, on ahead to Macedonia, while he himself spent a little more time in Asia. “Great is Ephesian Artemis!” 23 Around that time there was a major disturbance because of the Way. 24 There was a silversmith named Demetrius who made silver statues of Artemis, which brought the workmen a tidy income. 25 He got them all together, along with other workers in the same business. “Gentlemen,” he began. “You know that the reason we are doing rather well for ourselves is quite simply this business of ours. 26 And now you see, and hear, that this fellow Paul is going around not only Ephesus but pretty well the whole of Asia, persuading the masses to change their way of life, telling them that gods made with hands are not gods after all! 27 This not only threatens to bring our proper business into disrepute, but it might make people disregard the temple of the great goddess Artemis. Then she—and, after all, the whole of Asia, indeed the whole world, worships her!—she might lose her great majesty.” 28 When they heard this, they were filled with rage. “Great is Ephesian Artemis!” they shouted. “Great is Ephesian Artemis!” 29 The whole city was filled with the uproar; everyone rushed together into the theater, dragging along with them the Macedonians Gaius and Aristarchus, two of Paul's companions. 30 Paul wanted to go in to speak to the people, but his followers wouldn't let him. 31 Indeed, some of the local magistrates, who were friendly towards him, sent him a message urging him not to risk going into the theater. 32 Meanwhile, some people were shouting one thing, some another. In fact, the whole assembly was thoroughly confused, and most of them had no idea why they had come there in the first place. 33 The Jews pushed Alexander forward, and some of the crowd informed him what was going on. He motioned with his hand, and was going to make a statement to the people to explain things. 34 But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted together, for about two hours, “Great is Ephesian Artemis!” 35 The town clerk quietened the crowd. “Men of Ephesus,” he said, “is there anyone who doesn't know that our city of Ephesus is the place which has the honor of being the home of Artemis the Great, and of the statue that fell from heaven? 36 Nobody can deny it! So you should be quiet, and not do anything rash. 37 You've brought these men here, but they haven't stolen from the temple, or blasphemed our goddess. 38 If Demetrius and his colleagues have a charge they want to bring against anyone, the courts are open and we have magistrates. People can present their cases against one another. 39 But if you are wanting to know anything beyond that, it must be sorted out in the authorized assembly. 40 Let me remind you that we ourselves are risking legal proceedings because of this riot today, since there is no reason we could give which would enable us to present a satisfactory explanation for this uproar.” 41 With these words, he dismissed the assembly.

E347 | The 30/30 Protein Rule: Building Muscle & Burning Fat for Men's Health | The Prime Podcast It's Week 2 of Men's Health Month! In this vital episode, Dr. Skip Wyss and Dr. Julie Wyss of The Prime Podcast are talking about the single most important nutritional component for men: PROTEIN. Many men in their 30s and 40s struggle with weight gain and low energy, wondering why they can't eat like they did in their 20s. This episode provides the answer. Dr. Skip explains how a man's metabolism shifts after age 22 and why building muscle is the only true way to burn fat and support healthy testosterone levels. Discover the "30/30 Rule" – consuming 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking – as the essential first step to "win the morning" and prime your body for fat burning. Learn why amino acids are the true building blocks of muscle, why working out fully fasted can damage your gains, and how "thinness does not equal fitness." This episode is a must-listen for any man looking to lose stubborn visceral fat, naturally rebalance Low T, and build sustainable strength and health. Key Takeaways: To lose fat, you MUST build muscle. Muscle is your body's primary fat-burner. The 30/30 Rule: 30g of protein within 30 minutes of waking is critical. Amino acids are the essential building blocks for muscle. Wait 60-90 minutes after waking to drink coffee to avoid a massive cortisol (stress hormone) spike. Working out in a fully fasted state can cause your body to burn its own muscle for energy. Focus on strength and health, not just being "thin." "Thinness does not equal fitness." Losing visceral fat is the key to naturally rebalancing Low T. Gentlemen, it's time to lead your family in health. Start by focusing on protein and strength. Share this episode with the men in your life! For questions or to get the supplements discussed (like Perfect Amino), connect with us at info@primefamilycenters.com (mention the podcast!).
The team briefly touch on Kim Kardashian's new, critically panned TV show All's Fair and The Traitors finale, before Jack (eventually) explains what 'Peppa Pig Syndrome' is whilst unpacking a Times survey of 10,000 teachers that concludes Americanisms are sweeping across UK classrooms. Later, Mike introduces us to the newest and greatest movie star on the planet (and no, it is not Jackie Potatoes), while Emerald tells us about the furious tour guide causing guests to flock to Düsseldorf's Kunstpalast (stop laughing at the back!) and finally leading us through her missing-word game – complete with Tube-dwelling mosquitoes, tricky national anthems and the definitive guide to being a true gentleman. Episode #8 is an insider's view of the Henry Wine Group Board Meeting in the fall of 2007, when I was President & CEO.While reviewing some sales data for several of our top-end California producers, I noticed a disturbing trend that alarmed me. When I opened the meeting, I said, "Gentlemen, I have noticed some significant slowing down of the sales for a number of our most expensive California wines, and I believe something is happening that we should be paying close attention to.My comments were dismissed mainly by the board, which was composed chiefly of Republican-leaning businessmen. Their response was to comment that the economy was doing fine, especially on Wall Street.I opened the next Board meeting in March of 2008 with the following comment."Gentlemen, I wish I had been wrong back in September, but it appears my intuition was correct". Like good Republicans, they all looked at their shoes and would not look me straight in the eye.I explain in this snippet why the Wine Business is a Trailing Economic Indicator not a Leading Economic Indicator.Take a listen. Thanks for being a listener to the Fine Wine Confidential Podcast. For more information go to www.finewineconfidential.com

Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell and attorney Eric Bland dress up for Huluween on this jam-packed episode - and you can see the video version of COJ Cinema on your LUNASHARK Premium dashboard later this week. We unpack a wild week of contradictions in South Carolina's justice system — from the Murdaugh: Death in the Family series' chilling portrayal of Alex Murdaugh's unraveling, to the shocking arrest of Beaufort County deputy Billy Squires, caught on video holding four teens at gunpoint, to the ugliest of fat cats suckling at the taxpayer trough for frivolous investigations. The conversation first touches on the emotional aftermath of Murdaugh: Death in the Family and Patricia Arquette's nuanced portrayal of Maggie Murdaugh, revealing how addiction, control, and silence intersected in the family's downfall. The team discusses how privilege continues to shape accountability in the Lowcountry — how law enforcement officers are “held to a higher standard” only when it benefits them, and how political connections often mean the difference between a perp walk and a polite summons without all the trimming every other person. And finally, we're shining a light on one of the biggest threats to our state's fiscal security… lawyers like Mark Moore gobbling up HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of taxpayer dollars for fishing expeditions with little to no actionable results... (in Producer David Moses' opinion) ☕ Cups Up! ⚖️Episode References Richland County's legal bills in justice department jail probe top $600,000 in 9 months Eric Bland's Satterfield Gratitude Facebook Post

This episode of The Logbook - our History of Motorsports series - features a lecture by Dr. James Miller on the history of Formula One racing at Watkins Glen from 1961 to 1980. Miller argues that the collaboration between sporting gentlemen and local residents made the event possible but that ultimately, their differences led to the event's decline. The episode covers the origins of road racing in Watkins Glen, notable figures involved, the town's socioeconomic context, and the tensions that arose between local organizers and the globalizing forces of Formula One. Miller also speculates on the possible outcomes had different decisions been made. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== 00:00 The Golden Era of Formula One at Watkins Glen 01:33 The Rise and Fall of Watkins Glen 02:03 The Community Behind the Races 03:36 Sporting Gentlemen vs. Small Town Residents 06:01 The American Small Town Identity 11:01 Key Figures in Watkins Glen Racing 19:21 The Financial Struggles and Final Years 21:41 Reflections and What-Ifs 26:51 Q&A Session; Closing Remarks and Credits ==================== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: Visit Our Website Become a VIP at: Patreon Online Magazine: Gran Touring Follow us on Social: Instagram This episode is part of our HISTORY OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES and is sponsored in part by: The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), The Society of Automotive Historians (SAH), The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Argetsinger Family.
