This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom. Day 2919– What About My Neighbor's Neighbor? - Luke 10:25-37 Putnam Church Message – 07/26/2026 The Good News According to Luke: “What About My Neighbor's Neighbor?”   Last week, our message was “Joyful Return, Insightful Response,” in which we learned to rejoice that you belong to Him. Today, we continue with our thirtieth-first message from Luke's narrative of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Today's message is: “What About My Neighbor's Neighbor?” Our core passage today is Luke 10:25-37, on page 1613 of your pew Bibles. The Parable of the Good Samaritan 25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'[b]” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,' he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Opening Prayer Father, we come before You today grateful for Your Word, which searches our hearts and reveals both our need and Your grace. We confess that we often know more truth than we obey. We can quote Scripture, discuss doctrine, and defend our beliefs, yet still pass by hurting people on the other side of the road. Lord Jesus, teach us today what it means to love You with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Show us where we have drawn lines too tightly, where we have looked for loopholes, and where we have failed to see others with Your compassion. Holy Spirit, open our eyes, soften our hearts, and move us from knowing to doing. In the name of Jesus, amen. Introduction: Back to the Basics In 1959, Vince Lombardi inherited the Green Bay Packers at the lowest point in their history. The previous season, the team had lost ten of their twelve games. They were discouraged, disorganized, and defeated. So Lombardi gathered the team and announced that they were going back to basics. He picked up a football and said, “Gentlemen, this is a football.” From the back of the room, Max McGee, known as a cutup, replied, “Uh, Coach, could you slow down a little? You're going too fast for us.” Lombardi laughed, but the point was serious. The most brilliant playbook in the world will not help a team if the players have forgotten how to block, tackle, pass, catch, and run. Sometimes, spiritually, we need to go back to basics too. By the time Jesus stepped into the public religious life of Israel, many of the most visible religious leaders had turned godliness into a complex system of rules, rituals, and loopholes. They had studied the Law, memorized the Law, debated the Law, and built fences around the Law. But in the process, many had forgotten the heart of the Law. Love God. Love your neighbor. That sounds basic, doesn't it? But as Jesus shows us in Luke 10:25–37, the basics are not always easy. In fact, they are impossible without grace. In the previous message, “Joyful Return, Insightful Response,” the seventy returned from ministry rejoicing that even demons obeyed them in Jesus' name. Jesus corrected their joy, reminding them that their greatest joy was not what they had done for God, but that their names were written in heaven. Now Luke moves us into a conversation with a religious expert who wants to know what he must do to inherit eternal life. This is a very different kind of encounter. The seventy came back rejoicing in grace. / This lawyer comes testing Jesus with a legal question. The seventy had gone out announcing peace. / This man comes looking for a debate. The seventy were learning to serve. / This man is trying to justify himself. And Jesus, as He so often does, takes the conversation deeper than the man expected. / The question begins: “What should I do to inherit eternal life?” But by the end, the real question becomes: “What kind of person sees suffering and moves toward it with mercy?” Or to put it in the title of our message: What About My Neighbor's Neighbor? We will review four truths to understand the answer to this question. Main Point 1: The Wrong Question Reveals the Wrong Heart Luke tells us that an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus. / That matters. This man is not asking like a hungry soul seeking truth. He is not like the sinful woman who wept at Jesus' feet. He is not like Jairus, desperate for his daughter. He is not like the father whose son was tormented. He is not like the seventy returning with joy. He is testing Jesus. / He asks, “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” At first glance, that sounds like a good question. But there is a problem inside it. He asks what he must do to inherit. Those two words do not naturally fit together. You do not usually work to receive an inheritance. An inheritance is given because of relationship. A son or daughter receives what belongs to the family because they belong to the family. This man's question reveals confusion. He is thinking about eternal life as something to be achieved, earned, managed, or secured by religious performance. That was not unusual. Many first-century Jews assumed that as children of Abraham, they had a secure place in God's Kingdom. The question then became: “What level of obedience proves I belong? How far must I go? What exactly is required?” Jesus answers the question with another question: “What does the Law of Moses say? How do you read it?” / That is masterful. Jesus does not reject the Law. He points the man back to it. The Law was never the problem. The problem was the human heart trying to use the Law for self-justification. The man answers well. He combines Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus says, “Right. Do this and you will live.” Now, we need to hear Jesus carefully. Jesus is not saying the man can earn salvation by trying harder. Jesus is pressing the man to face the true standard. Perfect love for God and perfect love for neighbor would indeed describe a righteous life. The problem is that none of us has lived that way. / The man knows it too. So, Luke says he...

When they had assembled, he said to them, “Gentlemen, brothers, although I had done nothing against the people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was handed over as a prisoner from Jerusalem to the Romans. 18 After they interrogated me, they wanted to release me, because there were no grounds for the death penalty in my case. 19 But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar—not that I had any charge to bring against my own people. 20 That is why I asked to see you and speak to you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.” 21 They said to him, “We have not received any letters about you from Judea, and none of the brothers who came here has reported or said anything evil about you. 22 But we would like to hear from you what you think, because we know that people everywhere are speaking against this sect.” 23 They set a day to meet with Paul, and even more of them came to the place where he was staying. From morning till evening he explained and testified about the kingdom of God. He also tried to convince them about Jesus, both from the Law of Moses and the Prophets. 24 Some were convinced by what he said, but others continued in their unbelief. 25 They were arguing with one another and began to leave after Paul made this one statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your [1] fathers through Isaiah the prophet: 26 Go to this people and say, You will keep hearing and yet never understand; you will keep seeing and yet never perceive. 27 For the heart of this people has grown dull, their ears are hard of hearing, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them. [2] 28 “Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation from God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!” [3] 30 For two whole years Paul stayed in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to visit him. 31 He was preaching the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without anyone stopping him. In this Episode, Kelly is joined by writer Gabriel Rotello! He is the author of two books: Sexual Ecology: AIDS and the Destiny of Gay Men and The CBGB Conspiracy. He became the first openly gay op-ed columnist for a major American newspaper and is the founder of Out Week Magazine. He has also written, directed, and produced dozens of TV documentaries for major networks like HBO, Netflix, and the History Channel. Gabriel talks about growing up in Danbury, Connecticut, and traveling into the city with his older brother when he was 13! Even at that age, he knew he wanted to move to New York when he grew up. Kelly asks him what life was like in New York in the 1970s. Gabriel talks about how Manhattan was a playground for young adults in their early 20s. He tells us how cheap his rent was, describes the decay of the Bowery in great detail, and talks about how wonderful it was to play music at CBGB.  Kelly asks Gabriel about CBGB. Gabriel tells us that in the beginning, no one wanted to go there. He describes the "Bowery Bums", the mismanagement of the venue, and its terrible location. He then talks about how it became one of the most famous punk venues in the world.  Gabriel talks a bit about his book: The CBGB Conspiracy. He tells Kelly that he actually did not want to write a book about his time in the 70s at first. With the aids epidemic looming over it, he thought it too depressing. But when inspiration struck, while walking along the street one day, he came up with the idea of creating a murder mystery, with CBGB as the background and weaving in famous people of the era, along with his personal experiences. Kelly asks Gabriel a bit about the process of writing, and Gabriel talks about how he was inspired by a past guest of our show, Jonathan Mahler! He talks about reading Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx Is Burning... and being transported back into that time in his life.  Kelly then asks Gabriel what gay life was like back in the day. Gabriel describes the streets of the West Village being filled with shirtless gay men dancing and having the best time on a random Tuesday night. He talks about how there was a feud between the East Village gay community and the West Village gay community. He talks about their differences, what it was like to have one foot in both, and he reflects on how his perception has changed since then.   Gabriel then talks a bit about his partner Hap, who passed during the Aids Epidemic. Gabriel had met Hap when he was studying abroad and just happened to run into each other when he moved to New York. Gabriel talked about how Hap showed him the ropes as a newly out man. He talks about how they dated until Hap's passing. Kelly talks about marching on Washington in support of the movement. Dragons, Black Hens & Sleeping Warriors: The Legends of England’s Buried Treasure with Jeremy Harte

    Anglotopia Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 17, 2026 43:53

In this episode of the Anglotopia Podcast, Jonathan Thomas sits down with Jeremy Harte — folklorist, winner of the Catherine Briggs Folklore Award, curator of Bourne Hall Museum in Surrey, and author of Cloven Country: The Devil in the English Landscape and Travelers Through Time: A Gypsy History — to discuss his remarkable new book Treasures on Earth: Buried Wealth in the English Landscape, published by Reaktion Books. Jeremy has spent his career chasing the uncanny side of the English landscape, and in this book he has gathered hundreds of treasure legends together for the first time — organizing them not by region or date but by emotion: memory, ruin, strife, terror, failure, and longing. The result is one of the most original and quietly brilliant books on English folklore in years, and the conversation it generates is irresistible: Why did people surround buried gold with dragons, black hens, and demons? What does the moment a laborer on the River Ribble accidentally uncovered a Viking army's war chest have in common with Oak Island? Why is the folklore always cruelest at the very last minute? What is the real fantasy underneath the search for treasure — not gold, but escape, freedom, and the dream of never having to work again? And what does the figure of Mackenzie Crook's Detectorists, swinging their machines over Essex fields and dreaming of Saxon gold, tell us about the ancient human urge that these legends have always mapped? Links Treasures on Earth by Jeremy Harte (Reaktion Books) Cloven Country: The Devil in the English Landscape by Jeremy Harte Travelers Through Time: A Gypsy History by Jeremy Harte Bourne Hall Museum, Ewell, Surrey The Cuerdale Hoard The Rillaton Cup Detectorists — Mackenzie Crook (BBC/AcornTV) Friends of Anglotopia Club Takeaways Treasure legends are not really about gold. They are, as Jeremy Harte argues throughout, about the emotions that surround gold — longing, memory, failure, terror, and the fantasy of transformation. The stories survived because of what they did to the people who told and heard them, not because of any actual buried wealth. The Cuerdale Hoard — the largest Viking silver hoard ever found in Britain, unearthed by laborers straightening the River Ribble in the 1840s — is one of the most powerful examples of how real treasure finds retrospectively generate legends. Almost all treasure "traditions" that seem to predict a find are only recorded after the find is made. The classic Anglo-Saxon image of the dragon sitting on a barrow of gold — doing nothing but guarding it forever, sacrificing whatever life a dragon might have — is, Jeremy argues, an early cultural articulation of what happens when treasure takes over a human life. The same psychology drives Oak Island today. Treasure guardians shift with the centuries — dragons and giants give way to fairies, then to demons, then to ghosts — not randomly but in response to what each era finds believable. A legend must sit in the zone between "obviously true" and "obviously made up" to function: too real and it's history, too fantastic and it's a fairy tale. The dissolution of the monasteries did not immediately generate treasure legends. It took fifty to a hundred years for the trauma to work its way into folklore — appearing in ghost monks, ruined abbey atmosphere, and stories of gold thrown into ponds or bricked up in tunnels. Society, like individuals, needs time to process collective shock before it becomes story. Mary Parrish, a "brandy-loving London cunning woman," and Goodwin Wharton, the gullible aristocrat she led on a years-long quest for fairy gold — documented entirely from Wharton's own obsessive diary — are perhaps the most human pair in the book. Wharton was simultaneously a reasonably successful MP, raised money from syndicates, and organized diving bells off the Scottish coast for Armada treasure. Jeremy describes their relationship as "a con, but also a love story." The folk cruelty of treasure legends — the fortune always snatched away by one tiny mistake, a single word spoken, one black hair on a white ox — is not random. These stories circulated among communities who had not done well for themselves. The unkindness of fate felt true to their experience. The treasure was always just out of reach because that was always true. The real fantasy of treasure, Jeremy argues, is not wealth but escape — to become a gentleman, meaning someone visibly unencumbered by the need to work. The problem for many of the poor communities generating these legends was that even if they found a single coin, they could not spend it without someone asking where it came from. Less than 10% of records are digital — a parallel to archaeology, where the vast majority of objects are still in the ground. Metal detectorists and archaeologists have more in common than either entirely admits: both are animated by the same desire to find something and to validate themselves through the finding. The difference is in what they're willing to record and share. The book closes with the gardener at Wallingford who dug for buried treasure in his spare time until one day they found a fresh hole, his spade and gloves beside it, and the man himself was never seen again. Jeremy chose this image deliberately: "It was almost like, if I'd been giving a talk, it would have been time for me to wave bye-bye and disappear behind a curtain." Soundbites "Treasure is so potent it doesn't have to exist to destabilize human life. Most of the hordes in the book will never be found because they were never there." — Jeremy on the central argument of the book. "You find an Iron Age gold coin and it was — if it had been anything else, it would have been archaeology. It was the gold that made that different emotive feeling. And I thought I ought to be exploring that a bit." — Jeremy on the moment in the dried-out lake that started it all. "Think about the Anglo-Saxon dragon. He does nothing but guard gold, and sacrifices whatever a dragon life would be to just sit there forever in the darkness on the treasure. I thought, yeah, there is a common theme here." — Jeremy on why Oak Island and the dragon barrow are the same story. "It has to be the kind of thing you can announce in the pub and there will be a lively discussion with people banging down their pints and going, well bits of it could be true. It has to sit in that zone — too real and it's just history, too fantastic and it's a fairy tale." — Jeremy on what makes a legend work. "Mary Parrish — we have an entirely one-sided record. Goodwin Wharton was the literary half of the partnership. He even organized diving bells to try to dig up the treasure of the Armada off the coast of Scotland. And at the same time he is a fairly successful MP making his way up in government. Leading me to wonder what secrets might possibly lie in the diaries of some of our present members." — Jeremy on the Mary Parrish and Goodwin Wharton story. "People telling stories about lost treasure — the poorer the community, the more likely they are to be doing it. There's a sense of the unkindness of fate. People who had mastered fate and done quite well for themselves were sitting in the other corner and not contacting the gentleman with the story." — Jeremy on why treasure legends cluster around poverty. "The dissolution of the monasteries is recorded historically, basically day by day. What happened to the stuff is pretty well recorded. But it's not until well into the seventeenth century that you get the tropes of the monastic ghost, the buried treasures, the ghost monks. It took fifty to a hundred years for the trauma to work its way into folklore." — Jeremy on how collective trauma becomes legend. "The fantasy is to become a gentleman. Gentlemen are conspicuously visible in the countryside as people who wander around having no apparent need to work at anything whatsoever. Which of course is why they can go around collecting folk tales." — Jeremy on the real dream underneath treasure hunting. "When I actually go on site, my skepticism rolls away after about five miles walking. And I'm like, ooh, let's just have a quick look underneath here. There's a patch of dirt here. Let's just check. And I thought it'd be terribly embarrassing if I did actually find a hoard of gold. It's like — yeah, publicity exercise." — Jeremy's most English answer to whether he believes any treasure is really out there. "He'd disappeared and it was almost like, if I'd been giving a talk, it would have been time for me to wave bye-bye and disappear behind a curtain and go out the back." — Jeremy on why he ended the book with the vanishing gardener of Wallingford. The music of the Carolinas (and Appalachia in general) stems from the marriage of the Irish fiddle and the African banjo, which first met in the South before the revolution. The Tan and Sober Gentlemen aim to bring these traditions full circle, blending Irish tunes, ballads, and pub songs with the Appalachian old-time and bluegrass music they grew up on. The result is a ruckus known affectionately as “Irish-American hill-billy music”.Renowned as one of the South's most electrifying live folk bands, The Tan and Sober Gentlemen are known for blazing tempos, raw energy, and unforgettable shows. Their performances are raucous celebra-tions of the Carolinas' Irish heritage, filled with drinking, dancing, and downright joy, and have earned them a devoted following across the folk, bluegrass, celtic, and roots music scenes.Since forming in 2017, the Tan and Sober Gentlemen have toured across the United States and Ireland, per-forming at festivals including MerleFest, Blue Ox Festival, IBMA Bluegrass Live!, Bristol Rhythm & Roots, Appaloosa Festival, FloydFest, Ramble Fest, Shakori Hills, and internationally at Electric Picnic, Spraoi, and the world's largest Irish traditional music festival, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. In January 2024, the band sold out the Haw River Ballroom on their home turf of Alamance County, North Carolina, performing to 800 fans and recording a live album. Live at the Haw River Ballroom was released in February 2025. Their sophomore studio album, Regressive Folk Music (2022), followed their debut Ve-racity, which was named by Shite'n'Onions as one of the five best Celtic punk albums of 2019–2020.

This week's experiment: Visitors from the Arkana Galaxy, an Eastern European sci‑fi fever dream that asks, “What if humanity's first contact looked like a disco‑soaked existential crisis?” and then answers with one of the most gloriously unhinged films ever committed to celluloid. Strange creatures, stranger humans, and a plot that feels beamed in from another dimension collide into something so confident, so imaginative, so defiantly weird that you start to wonder if the filmmakers actually were from Arkana. The movie drifts through surreal set pieces, deadpan performances, and cosmic absurdity with the swagger of a masterpiece that knows you'll never fully understand it and doesn't care. In no way is this Breaking Brad; if anything, it might be one of the greatest films ever made, a reminder that sometimes the best cinema comes from the outer edges of sanity and geography.Expect baffling brilliance, unexpected beauty, and the kind of sci‑fi ambition that makes modern blockbusters look timid. Visitors from the Arkana Galaxy isn't just a movie, it's a transmission from a better, weirder universe, and we're lucky it reached us at all.Be sure to subscribe to the Gentlemen's Guide to Midnite Cinema to hear more of Sammy.
