Peace on Earth. Can it be??? No, apparently not. Angst and dread continue to reign supreme as we enter the death throes of 2025, so let's just embrace it and have a very happy Crisis-mas! We've stuffed the stocking fit to bursting in this year's special Christmas episode. We welcome back Sammy from the Gentlemen's Guide to Midnite Cinema, and habitual Caliber 9'er, Bryce Hamilton (who never says no to a good bit of stuffing). Together, we'll be delving into a triple feature of sort-of-Christmas movies, starting with Wake in Fright (1971) directed by Ted Kotcheff, taking a detour into classic film noir with Lady in the Lake (1946), directed by Robert Montgomery and accelerating finally up into a Hong Kong action cinema frenzy with City On Fire (1987), directed by Ringo Lam. Its Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid. Unless you are one of the teams still live for the playoffs but not locked into a spot yet (looking at you Steelers, Panthers, Texans, Packers, Colts, Lions, Ravens and Buccaneers). Now some of those are safer than others, Ravens Colts and Bucs drop to below 1% if they lose this week, so maybe yeah, do be afraid! The NFC West has three possible winners at the moment, and all three feel like they could be Superbowl contenders (and then there's the Cardinals!). These merry gentlemen will continue to duke it out for supremacy with divisional games in week 18 that could decide it all, but that depends on this weeks results. We go through all of last week's games, then look to the matchups that will decide these teams' fate. Christmas slate is not looking great, but the rest is pretty tasty with a lot of playoff futures being decided. Will your team make it? Biographical Bytes from Bala: Laurel Hill West Stories #051, part 3   Born in 1848 in New York to French immigrant parents, Frank Dumont became a seminal figure in minstrel culture. He began to perform as a boy and joined Christy's Minstrels by 1862, a troupe that set the enduring standard format for minstrel shows: a semicircle stage arrangement with an interlocutor (emcee) in the center and end men characters Mr. Tambo and Mr. Bones at the sides. The interlocutor opened the show with the phrase, “Gentlemen, be seated,” which became iconic. Dumont later joined other minstrel troupes and eventually settled in Philadelphia around 1880, where he introduced popular songs such as “Silver Threads Among the Gold” and “When You and I Were Young, Maggie,” both significant sentimental ballads of the era. He "died with his boots on," as it were as he sat in the box office for a St. Patrick's Day matinee.
