Further instructionIs apparently called for —Don't eat those onions!* * *Immediately on the heels of the last sections we explored, “Instructions for Practice,” and the testimony of Buddha's posse, the “Twenty-Five Sages,” comes an excruciatingly long and detailed examination of what seems to be the entire litany of Buddha's teachings, some directly relevant to the focus of the Surangama, others seemingly thrown in just for good measure, or simply because they were available. This discursive digression, from one subject to another, and yet another — like the featured acts of a modern television talk- or talent-show — lends credence to the supposition by some scholars that the whole sutra amounts to a pastiche of relatively disconnected teachings. The Ananda-focused narrative provides the through-line, pulling the smorgasbord together. The whole thing runs to about 550 pages, in the new translation by the Buddhist Text Translation Society, Burlingame, California. We will squeeze a Reader's Digest condensed version into this segment, suggesting that you follow up for detail.Next on the program, we find two long solo performances from each of the guest stars, who need no introduction. First up, Avalokiteshvara, “The Bodhisattva Who Hears the Cries of the World,” testifies to the efficacy of the faculty of hearing, as the go-to gate to samadhi, running down all the major implications of audial insight. He famously vows to help all others in their quest, magically appearing in 32 various human and nonhuman forms suitable to their predispositions, and to provide protection to them in 14 kinds of dangerous situations, leading them to liberation. The original standup chameleon. With no break, commercial or biological, Buddha cues up Manjusri to further explain, and expand upon, the limitations of the sense faculties and mind, hot buttons of the times. Manjusri dutifully heaps high praise on Avalokiteshvara's method of relying solely on hearing, akin to promoting his fellow panelist's latest book, or movie. One wonderful, circular question he asks of Ananda is, “Why haven't you been hearing your own hearing?” Later declaring that “It is the easiest way to reach enlightenment.”Both guest performers express gushing admiration for Buddha's discourse — he is the star of the show, after all — along with some sympathy for the devil, in the person of Ananda, playing second banana to Shakyamuni. You can't help listening for the laugh track. Or the theme song.Occasionally, the unnamed master of ceremonies turns the camera on the live audience: Ananda and “all the others in the great assembly… were like someone who has traveled far from home on matters of business: although the traveler has not yet been able to return, he knows the road that will lead him home.” Rather than applause lines, Buddha's intended effect on his audience is realization itself. This rather modern analogy — being on the road — resonates with my coinage, “The Original Frontier.” Buddha was the historical discoverer, and explorer, of this strange realm of the mind itself. He blazed trails for the rest of us. During his time, he may have been the foremost inspirational speaker on the circuit, but would never have qualified for a TED Talk, let alone develop a following on Twitter. Then, in what may be the earliest expressions of what later became Zen Buddhist precepts, Ananda receives “Four Clear and Definitive Instructions on Purity: On Sexual Desire, On Killing, On Stealing, and On Making False Claims.” These are four of the sixteen precepts that we receive yet today, as householders. We understand “purity,” however, as non-dual, not as a puritanical ideal of morality.“Establishing a Place for Awakening,” follows, thoroughgoing instructions for how to set up an altar room for practice, detailing what kinds of statuary should be displayed. Of course, actual statues of buddhas and bodhisattvas would not put in an appearance for centuries after Buddha's time. Then comes the “The Śūraṅgama Mantra,” in phonetic Chinese. It is offered up for “people who cannot get rid of their stubborn habits.” A kind of catch-all cure-all, good-for-what-ails-you charm, talisman, or spell — if you will but recite it. To put a weird twist on it, a virtual “Buddha,” whom Buddha “makes appear” from his “unconditioned mind,” then recites all 554 lines. This is followed by an effusive guarantee of the powers of the mantra to protect. Mantra magic. Your results may vary, of course. Then follows yet another lengthy discourse, on the “Levels of Being.” The subtitle, “The Coming into Being of the World of Illusion,” reprises the title of a prior section. But this time, “coming into being” comprises a synopsis of the biology of the times. It details “Twelve Classes of Beings,” all of which are “bound to the cycle of death and rebirth in this world as a result of” various causes and conditions. Next, for human beings only, a prescription for practicing and mastering “the samadhi of the Buddhas” is proffered. A formula of “Three Gradual Steps.” The first — I am not making this up — advocates:A. Avoiding the Plants of the Onion GroupAversion to the onion family (Vidalia onions excepted) is explained as a specific example of a general principle: that of avoiding, or eliminating, contributing factors. That is, factors that contribute to less desirable internal states and outflows, especially for the aspiring monastic. Onions were thought to arouse sexual desire when cooked, and anger when raw. Meat is included in this category, along with raw foods in general. This would constitute contemporary views on healthy diet and wellbeing, at that time. But modern attitudes toward nutrition are not all that much more sophisticated. See: obesity.B. Ending Any Violation of the Fundamental Rules of BehaviorThis second gradual step is another iteration on the precepts, as they were conceived at that time, focusing on celibacy, killing, stealing and lying. These evolved as rules for living together in the context of the Buddhist Order, called vinaya in Sanskrit. Both Dogen Zenji and Keizan Zenji produced voluminous monastic regulations, called shingi in Japanese, over three millennia later.C. Avoiding Intentional Engagement with Perceived ObjectsThe third refers to the outflows through the six faculties of engagement — the intoxication of the senses and their objects — promising that eventually, no mental objects will arise, leading to “peaceful abiding.” Are you beginning to see a pattern here?Next we are treated to another longish discourse on “The Fifty-Seven Stages of the Bodhisattva's Path,” detailing the stages of “Arid Wisdom, Ten Stages of Stabilizing the Mind, Ten Abodes, Ten Practices, Ten Dedications, Four Additional Practices, Ten Grounds” and finally, “Two Final Stages,” the first of which is called “Equivalent Enlightenment,” and concluding with the declaration:Thus, having passed through these various stages — twelve stages in all, some counted singly, some in groups — they reach at last the stage of Wonderful Awakening, which is the unsurpassed enlightenment. Here the numbering is getting a bit out of hand, but you can still count them on both hands, fingers and toes. Modern Zen teachers, such as Master Dogen, push back on this idea that zazen is “step-by-step meditation,” transpiring in clear, linear stages of development. But it is clear that in Buddha's time, breaking the path into digestible bites was an absolute necessity, especially when attending such a moveable feast as we are being served here. No one in the great assembly is taking notes on their mobile devices. They cannot get back to them later. But Buddha is merely pointing at the humble, homely truth — accessible to all, nothing hidden. However we slice and dice it, reality finally has to be holistic, both in the method of realizing it, and the resulting realization. Now comes an interesting diversion: “Naming the Discourse.” This challenge to the host comes from the prompting of one of the guest celebrities, Manjusri. In design, we have a related exercise called “Name that Concept.” If an innovation is truly new, there will most likely be no phrase in the vernacular that adequately captures it. Thus, we must go to some absurd extremes in brainstorming:The Sutra of the Supreme and Magnificent Dharma-Imprint of the Mantra of the White Canopy, Which Is Spoken above the Crown of the Great Buddha's Head, and Which Is the Serene and Pure Oceanic Eye of the Thus-Come Ones of the Ten DirectionsThis is the first mention, the longest and most unwieldy. The shortest entry in the contest is the last:The Sutra of the Consecrating Mantra Phrases and the Myriad Śūraṅgama Practices of the BodhisattvasWhich is pretty concise, and touches on most of the bases. Surangama means something like “heroic valor,” “heroic progress,” or “heroic march.” Reading it certainly requires a heroic effort.Nowadays, you may have noticed that books, movies, television series, and other public media presentations, often have a one-word title, or at the most, a couple of words. This inevitable trend helps to cut through the clutter of competing offerings. The subtitle carries the load of explaining the title. Then, just to set the proper tone for the warnings of the “Mara states” to come, what better than a trip to hell? Google “Mara,” and you find: “In Buddhist cosmology, Mara is associated with death, rebirth and desire. Thera has described Mara as ‘the personification of the forces antagonistic to enlightenment.'” Now, of course, we have to also Google “Thera.”The subtitle gives us our first clue: “Ananda Requests Instruction.” The resultant title, “The Hells,” confirms our worst fears. Ananda asks how can there still be such destinies as hells, when “the essential nature of all Buddhas is the true reality?” and do they, the hells, conform to the formula of existing on their own, or are they based on the “deluded habits of living beings?” Graphic content alert: gory descriptions of hells, reminiscent of Dante's Inferno, based on various bad behavior and judgment calls.I would second Ananda's disbelief. I have always considered the threat of hell to be the curse of theism. It is bad enough that we suffer so, during our lifetime. Do we really need the threat of eternal perdition on top of that, adding the demeaning insult of the blame game, to the agony of existential injury? But it is clear that early Buddhism, at least, thought, and taught, the reality of the hells, long before Jesus Christ came on the scene. However, in Zen, these hells are considered to be the product of our own minds, and, like everything else in reality, impermanent. In one famous incident in the history of Zen, a monk goes into hell intentionally, to save his mother. How did he do that? I suppose it was in a dream within a dream. My mother appeared to me in a dream the night she died.Next, in “The Roles of Emotion and Thought,” Buddha explains how internal, as well as outer-directed, deluded habit-patterns develop, how autonomic processes entangle with mental desires and emotions, including the impulse to shun death, and to embrace life. Alive, we follow natural inclinations; after death, the various currents of our karma. These lead to all kinds of karmic consequences, unintended and intended, including falling into various kinds of hells, based on the degree of emotional dysfunction.“Ten Causes and Six Retributions” follow, developing Buddha's point that karmic retribution is brought upon ourselves by our intentional actions. This indicates, as an aside, that some actions may not entail karmic consequences, as they are not exactly intentional. A ray of sunshine at the end of the tunnel. Then comes the familiar lineup of the usual suspects: 1, Sexual desire, joined with physical contact, leading to intercourse; shout out to Schopenhauer. 2, Craving, with attraction, leads to plotting. 3, Arrogance and self-superiority, to competitiveness. Hilariously, Buddha points out that when the “Thus-Come-Ones” see this arrogance, they greet it with an expression, “taking a drink of stupidity.” 4, Hatred, with defiance, leads to confrontations. 5, Enticing others, plus conniving, to entrapment. 6, Falsehood, joined with deviousness, leads to insults. 7, Festering resentment, nursing a grudge, leads to vengeance. 8, Holding wrong views, joined to rejecting the opinions of others, leads to mistakes, such as that the self is real. 9, Blaming, joined to defamation, leads to false accusations. 10, Disputatiousness, joined to engagement, leads to vociferous court proceedings. Who would have thought that in Buddha's time the “see you in court,” hurled as an expletive, would echo as it does today? All these egregious habit-patterns are accompanied by the gnarly details of their consequences, along with the admonition to avoid them assiduously. Then a summary — of actions of the sense faculties — as the root causes of these consequences and retributions. “The Seven Destinies Are the Result of Karma” brings to a close this dystopian vision of all that can go wrong if only we follow our instinctual pursuit of pleasure. Buddha offers a bit of hope:Ananda, such is a detailed explanation of the seven destinies — of beings in the hells and of ghosts, animals, humans, ascetic masters, gods, and asuras. In their confusion, all are submerged in the attributes of the conditioned world. Their deluded mental activity leads them into rebirth in accordance with their karma. Within the wondrous perfect understanding that is the fundamental unconditioned mind, these destinies are like mirages of flowers seen in the sky. These destinies do not actually occupy any location; they are simply illusions. Even less do they signify anything real.Well, now you tell us! After scaring us half to death with apocalyptic visions of eternal suffering… it's all just overactive imagination? We have to cut Buddha some slack here, understanding that his original compassionate teachings have been strained through the filter of centuries of social, cultural and economic evolution, before they were committed to paper. Who can know how he may have couched his terms? This is the last of the Surangama Sextet. But we are not done yet. There is more — an appendix on the Fifty False states that may occur in each of the stages of meditation, through each of the aggregates of Form, Sensation, Perception, Formations, and Consciousness. Carnivore Diet – Eat until satiety?, Weight Loss Plateau, Handwriting, HPA and Glycogen, Leptin Make your health an act of rebellion. Join The Healthy Rebellion Please Subscribe and Review: Apple Podcasts | RSS Submit your questions for the podcast here Show Notes: News topic du jour: Glucose or Insulin, Which Is the Culprit in Patients with COVID-19 and Diabetes? "Several comorbidities have emerged as risk factors for severe COVID-19 development, including type 2 diabetes, increased body weight, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. These illnesses characterize the metabolic syndrome. Thereby, increased glucose concentrations may be responsible for the reported poor outcome. Indeed, in a large retrospective study from Wuhan, type 2 diabetes was associated with a higher death rate due to COVID-19, though the death rate was lower with better controlled blood glucose (Zhu et al., 2020). This would advocate for aggressive treatment with glucose-lowering drugs such as insulin. Contradicting this deduction, in a new correlative retrospective paper by Yu et al. (2020), the authors identified insulin treatment as a possible trigger of death rate in COVID-19 patients with diabetes (Yu et al., 2020). Thus, which is the culprit for the worth outcome in patients with COVID-19 and diabetes, hyperglycemia or insulin? Maybe both, and there are still other suspects in these multimorbid patients." 1. Carnivore Diet – Eat until satiety? [16:44] James says: After almost a year of strict elimination diets amongst other therapies, I’m trying a beef-only diet to get to the bottom of some chronic health issues. I’m 3 weeks in and all my symptoms are worse than before. I’m eating to just above my *estimated* energy expenditure (by ~400kcal), but I’ve been advised (https://www.kevinstock.io/health/fat-loss-and-the-carnivore-diet/) to eat until satiety and that my appetite will eventually regulate. Until then – as someone who’s been doing keto for 2 years, suffering with autoimmune stuff, tracking my macros and workout out consistently (as opposed to being overweight & coming from SAD) – I can expect to gain some body fat. I struggle with ever feeling satiated after a meal. I can eat over 2lbs of meat in a meal – or even until I’m physically sick – and still be hungry. I’d love to be able to eat intuitively and until satisfied, which is why I’d consider taking the advice, yet as someone who struggled with anorexia, know it will be incredibly difficult for me. Q. Do you think this is the way to go, or would it be better to gradually increase calories, “reverse dieting” style? If the former, how do you imagine it's working? If the later, how do you know when to stop increasing calories and on average how long should it take? I imagine the major benefits from carnivore diets come from elimination of sensitive foods & subsequent gut relief & healing. I’m sure this helps the satiety, but if eating until satiety is simply revving up the metabolism maybe it’d be better to do so with reverse dieting, to minimise the damage. I’d just be afraid if I didn’t follow the advice and did it in a more measured way I’d still be continuously hungry after. I’d be willing to gain body fat temporarily if it helped resolve this. Thanks for your help Robb & Nicki – loving the podcast :D 2. Weight Loss Plateau [26:29] Ashley says: Hi Robb and Nicki! A huge thank you for all your research, knowledge and opinions (especially when salty :) that you share with the world. I am currently studying natural nutrition and every time I read something in my books that sounds outdated I literally go through all your episodes to hear if you have any insights, and almost always, you do! My question today is about weight loss plateau on Keto. I am 35 years old, mom to 4 (ages 6,4,2 and 12 months). Since about the age of 7 I was a vegetarian because I didn't like the idea of eating animals and even vegan for a few of my early adult years. Wait, you'll start liking me in a minute :) My entire diet pretty much consisted of simple carbs and low fat dairy at times. (insert Woman hitting herself in the face emoji here) During my first pregnancy, I began craving chicken which was so weird but I knew that cravings for "healthy" food meant I was probably missing nutrients and so for the baby, I stopped being a vegetarian. I gained 30 kg (66lbs) during that pregnancy and before losing all of it, became pregnancy again, and again gained far too much weight. During my third pregnancy, I had gestational diabetes and decided to make all dietary changes necessary because I did not want to start with insulin. That's when I started to read about carbs and sugar etc. I made changes to my diet to reduce the simple carbs mostly and stopped eating things like bread, crackers, cookies. The Junk. During this pregnancy I didn't gain as much weight and it was much easier to get most of it off quickly but then, 8 months later I got pregnant again! My fourth pregnancy was amazing because I was following a low-carb healthy diet but I knew that after having the baby I would need to work hard to get back to the body composition that I wanted. That's when I learned about keto. So 4 weeks after birth I began keto and couldn't believe how fast the weight and inches were coming off. The change in diet affected my life in every way possible that I decided to go back to school for nutrition too! So exactly one year post-partum, I have lost 16kg (35lbs) this weight came off by 6 months after having the baby but since then hasn't budged. I am 5"4, 138lbs. And would like to lose those last annoying 5-8 lbs and I have completely plateau-ed. I eat 2 meals a day, about 1200-1300 calories a day with pretty good keto macros of about 20% protein, 75% fat and 5% carbs. (I do eat ALOT of veggies). My protein comes mostly from Salmon (twice a week), beef (steak or hamburger) twice a week, eggs, nuts... I do like to treat myself once or twice a week to some full fat whipped cream with some berries and usually finish off my meals with some 99% dark chocolate. I have to admit I add 100% natural peanut butter to smoothies, 10% yogurts or just shamelessly put a tablespoon in my mouth when I feel like something sweet. I'm trying cut down because of the toxicity, omega-6 and carbs in peanut butter but I really really love it.. so that's hard :) I don't get hungry much (only after fasting for more than 18 hours), feel great and haven't been sick once all year! I lift weights twice a week, cardio once a week, yoga twice a week. My arms, legs and glutes are toned and I'm quite happy with how far I've come and what I really want to improve (hence the feeling of being stuck) is the belly area which is still bulging out and I feel like I have years of stored fat in there that's just not budging. I check blood ketones every day and I'm usually between 1.1-1.8 so I know I'm definitely in ketosis. Should I be reducing my calories to get past this plateau? I don't want to mess with my metabolism. Are the indulging snacks holding me back? (They are pretty much counted in the calories. Those are days where I can reach 1300, 1350. On days where I don’t snack I’ll usually be around 1200.) Is this a plateau or should I just accept this new body composition as being post 4 pregnancies? Sorry for the long long long question, but I wanted to give you as much background as possible. Thank you so much for your time and sending both of you lots of love and appreciation from Israel! xo Ashley 3. Handwriting [36:30] Tim says: Hey Robb, Really enjoy the podcasts. I just started listening a few months ago and it's great for when I'm driving to work or really anywhere that'll take me at least 10 minutes to drive to. You have a good combination of "complicated science" explanations and dumbed down explanations so I can follow along with most of what you're talking about without needing to fully understand the more scientific stuff. And I feel like I'm always learning something that'll make me healthier or keep me healthy longer. I've been doing Crossfit for a couple years now and I've noticed my handwriting "neatness" has gone to shit. It seems to take a lot more effort to write legibly than it used to take. I feel that there's some connection between all of the exercises/lifts that use my forearms (pull-ups, snatches, cleans, etc.) and my handwriting troubles. My girlfriend started going to the gym I go to about a year ago and I asked her about this handwriting issue recently and she said she noticed it with herself also. I was just wondering if this is common for people who do Crossfit-esque workouts and if there's some kind of stretch or exercise I could do to help with it. Thanks, Tim 4. HPA and Glycogen [46:38] Mark says: My understanding of your work, high intensity exercise is heavily glycogen dependent and some level of carb fueling is required to refill glycogen storage or you risk adrenal fatigue. I periodically experiment with checking blood sugar levels and have noticed after a 10 min intense TM interval workout, my blood glucose can stay relatively stable (80's) or shoot up to a high level for me (110) which is typical of eating a higher carbohydrate meal. This seems to correlate with either low or moderate carb fueling the previous 2-3 days. Would very small changes in glucose levels before and after intense brief exercise indicate inadequate glycogen levels and thus a higher risk of adrenal fatigue? I have not found any studies on this related to non-diabetic subjects with good insulin response. I have been folowing your diet recommendations for several years and tend to be carb sensitive so stay in the 50-100g daily range. Wondering if I can use this change in glucose levels to help me gauge when more carbs are needed. As a side note, I have noticed the first couple of meals when I eat higher carb actually causes a drop in my blood sugar one hour post meal which makes me think it is replacing glycogen. 5. Leptin [54:10] Danielle says: Hi Robb! I have been following you for many years, read your books and love learning from this Paleo/ Keto/ Carnovire community! I have a question for you regarding this VLC/ZLC lifestyle and leptin resistance. I have been an athlete my whole life, but I have also struggled with the last 10-15 lbs my whole life so when I had my DNA tested and learned that I have homozygous result for the LEPR gene, it really didnt surprise me much- explains a lot why its always been tough to shake these last few pounds no matter what I try! I am a 37 year old female, 5'3", 135lbs and last time I had a DEXA in August I was 30% BF. I went paleo about 7 years ago, keto about 2 and more recently, carnivore although the past month or so I have started to reintroduce some plant matter and other fat sources. I feel like i've tried every macro combo you can imagine and I have also tried every exercise method from HIIT to running to weights, yoga, you name it. Anyway, I am just curious what your advice is for someone like me? I used to fast everyday but I have read that ppl with Leptin resistance really shouldnt be engaging in fasts longer than 12-15 hours, eat smaller, slower meals and thats all good but what about carbs? Do I need some, none or more than keto standards? I would really love your advice on this, I dont see much from our integrative/ bio hacking community on this subject. Thank you for all that you do!! Where do you run to when there's nowhere to run? Excellent question, if I do say so myself. Well, this week on 3 Chords & the Truth, we're escaping somewhere deep into the music. When you feel like you can't take another damn thing, it's good to have a bunch of rockabilly queued up and then go from there. WHICH IS exactly what we're doing this week on the Big Show. It's the next thing to having a time machine and heading back to a world that was COVID-free, where Trumpism sounded like something having to do with bridge . . . and where you (meaning me) sported fewer pounds and more hair. I guess that sort of sums up this week's show. Alas. It's 3 Chords & the Truth, y'all. Be there. Aloha.
BiPAP vs CPAP: Which Machine Works Best for You? - Originally posted hereIf you're suffering from sleep apnea, you know how potentially dangerous it is. When you stop breathing all of a sudden, you're opening up a whole bag of risks and complications like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart diseases.CPAP or BiPAP Machine? That is the question! One of the most effective methods of treating sleep apnea is by using a continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP machine to keep your airway open while sleeping. This ensures that you get a steady supply of air in your lungs. But there is also another machine that can help you deal with sleep apnea: the bi-level positive airway pressure or BiPAP machine. It's newer than the CPAP machine as it was invented around a decade after the original CPAP machine.Given these two, sleep apnea sufferers often wonder what type of machine to use; whether they should use a CPAP or a BiPAP machine to treat sleep apnea. To answer this, we'll be discussing what both machines do and under which situations they can be used.Different Types of Sleep Apnea - And Should I Choose a CPAP or BiPAP?Before going into detail about the various apnea machines, it's important to know the different sleep apnea types first. Doing so will help you better decide which type of device might work best for you. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common kind of sleep apnea. Your airway gets blocked, so air can't pass through, resulting in a momentary stopping of breath. The blockage is usually caused by your throat muscles' tendency to relax, causing you to snore as air has to be forced out during exhalation. If your sleep apnea isn't caused by any airway obstruction, then you might have the less common type--central sleep apnea (CSA). You stop breathing for up to ten seconds while sleeping because your brain did not send the signal instructing your lungs to continue breathing. There's also the complex sleep apnea or mixed sleep apnea, which is characterized by a combination of symptoms from OSA and CSA. The diagnosis of complex sleep apnea usually comes only after the sleeping disorder does not respond to CPAP therapy.Which Is the Better Choice: BiPAP vs CPAP?Both the CPAP and BiPAP machines work extremely well in treating sleep apnea. However, there are a few minor differences that you need to take into account when deciding which type of machine to purchase. If you have OSA, the first choice is usually the CPAP machine. The BiPAP machine is usually the go-to option if you have CSA and other diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder and congestive heart failure. Moreover, the BiPAP machine can be programmed to monitor your breathing if you have CSA. In case it detects that you did not breathe for a set period of time, it pushes air into your lungs, essentially forcing you to breathe once more. But take note that you can also use the BiPAP machine even if you have OSA. If you find the constant pressure of the CPAP machine too uncomfortable, or if your OSA remains unresolved, then the BiPAP machine is the next best thing.Price-wise, the CPAP machine is cheaper than the BiPAP machine.Keep in mind that you need a prescription to use these medical devices, so your doctor will be the one to recommend the type of machine you're going to use.But be sure to talk things through with your physician and explore the pros and cons of if to choose a BiPAP vs CPAP or CPAP vs BiPAP machine so that you can buy the one that's right for you. Mason: (00:02) It's so good to meet you man. And it was so cool. Everyone here might be a little bit of a gap between the interviews, but I've just had Nick Perry on the podcast this morning and I know I've already told you, but he really wanted me to tell you he's a massive fan of yours. He was- Jost: (00:15) It's awesome to hear that. Mason: (00:17) Yeah. And I am as well. Let's jump in, in where you first started getting your fascination with Chinese medicine and Taoism. You were just 10 years old, were you saying? Jost: (00:27) Yes. It was back in 68. I was just 11 years old and I was fascinated into China. China was on my mind, on my radar, and the cultural revolution was big. So, I started writing letters to the Chinese committee and- Mason: (00:41) Well, what was the Chinese committee? Jost: (00:44) There was the public affairs committee in which we are running the cultural revolution. They were communists big time. Yeah. And I started expressing my interest and what an amazing philosophy that is. Obviously, I had no idea that cultural revolution and China's philosophy actually got nothing in common. Mason: (00:58) Yeah. Jost: (00:59) And I talked about Yin and Yang and all that kind of stuff and how fascinated I am by the magic of it. Mason: (01:07) How did you learn about Yin and Yang? Jost: (01:08) Not by these sort of interplay of forces. I was already fascinated by it, because I mean kung-fu started to evolve and came to the West. And so, the whole idea of Yin and Yang, sort of I saw those symbols already, but I didn't really know what it meant but I was drawn to it intuitively. So, some people would say, "It must be past life," whatever. "It most likely is the case, because why would you be interested in it?" Yeah? Mason: (01:36) Mm-hmm (affirmative). Jost: (01:36) Because I wasn't really interested in the mundane world. And I grew up in Germany, in Western Germany when post war economy was peaking and everything was about working hard to succeed to get the house and the cars and the prestige. And I said, "No, I don't want this." Mason: (01:52) Yeah. And you were young, when you got that. Right? Jost: (01:55) Yeah. I didn't want it. I just always already was dreaming myself being on top of the mind, the magic and the sorceress and evolving the forces from the cosmic and doing sort of martial art fairytales, like what you see this day in crouching tiger. This sort of stuff I dreamed about over and over. But every time I mentioned that to people, obviously everyone said, "Oh, you're just a dream." And so, I realised I can't really talk much about it. And, yeah. I mean, I was 14 and someone gave me hashish, very good quality from Amsterdam, because I lived only one hour away from Amsterdam. Mason: (02:33) Yeah. Jost: (02:34) So, I had drugs and then I realised, "Oh, it is a reality." So, obviously I started to explore the drugs. And I got into university, I studied social work, but I also love that psychedelic aspect more and more and more. I moved to Amsterdam when it was 19, 20. And so, I worked there for a while. I did my experience year in social work there in Amsterdam in the Milky Way. Mason: (03:00) [inaudible 00:03:00]. Nice. Jost: (03:01) The classic Milky Way where they sell hashish on the ground floor, and then they do counseling on the top floor. It's like the- Mason: (03:08) ... the whole package. Jost: (03:10) Yeah, the whole package. Amsterdam in those days, whatever your interest is, there's a business. Mason: (03:16) Yeah, right. Jost: (03:17) Whatever you want, someone sells it to you. Mason: (03:19) Yeah. Okay. Jost: (03:22) And there were some straight people in those days, but they lived outside Amsterdam. And even the cops, the police, [inaudible 00:03:30] had red hair, henna in there hair, they had earrings. One day we were smoking hashish in the car in my really bumped out VW van and we were in the stop sign and smoking. We couldn't even look through the windows. And we heard a knock at the window. We put the window down, and there was a cop there. And he said, "Hey guys, you can't park here." "Okay, man." So, we kept driving in Amsterdam. So, everything went down. You just do it. So, you explore the psychedelic on every level. So, I really went with it and I wanted more of it. But, exploring more by drugs doesn't work. That was the big learning curve. Mason: (04:15) How long did it take you to learn that? Jost: (04:17) I was 22, 23 by the time I realised, "I can't get more on drugs." Mason: (04:23) Well, it's something to get. That's interesting to even ever be able to catch that and get that. Is that because you had an intention? Jost: (04:30) I was a drug dealer by then. I was organized. I always loved the entrepreneurship, so I had access to quantities big time, which is all in my books. I talk about it in my books. Mason: (04:43) Especially in high- Jost: (04:43) Higher and Higher, Drug Repair That Works, fully describe the stories. Mason: (04:45) Oh man, I'm really looking forward to reading this. Jost: (04:48) Yeah. It's full, it's incredible really. Great stories like dealing with Chinese people in Amsterdam, with opium and things like that. In those days it was pretty hardcore. Mason: (04:58) Did they have genuine Chinese opium den's? Jost: (05:02) Yeah. Full on. It had everything. You had an underground scene. So, it was like the Chinese were running the drugs. They were just like the Hell's Angels were running the drugs. The had Hell's Angels cafes. It was enormously multicultural. But for some reason, it all worked. They knew their territory and everyone kept sort of by the boundaries very well. Mason: (05:26) Yeah. Okay. Jost: (05:27) But because I had access to so many drugs, I could have what I wanted. And I had access to really the best mescaline. I mean, I'm talking to serious quality in those days, and LSD as much as I want. I actually came to Australia with a bottle of LSD liquid. And I actually took it with me to Nimbin in 1981- Mason: (05:49) And became the king of the town. Jost: (05:50) I was in the pub one day, in the middle of Nimbin. Mason: (05:55) Yeah. Jost: (05:56) We're talking '81 Friday night pub. And there was a guy, I was beside this guy at the counter. And I asked him, "Do you want some LSD liquid?" And he looked at me if asking me a thirsty man in the desert, "Do you want some water?" Mason: (06:09) Yeah, right. Jost: (06:11) And I said, "Yeah, of course." So, I gave him two drops in the scooner. And within half an hour, he was just like going all over the place. It was serious stuff. Mason: (06:20) That was good. Jost: (06:20) Yeah. The whole pub suddenly knew, there's this German guy who's got a bottle of LSD liquid, the real thing. So, there were 50 people in the pub, so I put everyone two drops in. The whole pub, off their face. So, some people- Mason: (06:37) And Nimbin has never been the same again. Jost: (06:38) ... have never had that quality. Mason: (06:39) Yeah, right. Jost: (06:40) Because, we told them serious quality. It was pure. Three drops would've burnt to your brain. So, I made sure everyone only two drops. But a lot of people, in that center of Nimbin, they couldn't... they were going in circles and couldn't hack it. It was just too much. Mason: (06:56) Who are you? Jost: (07:01) So, I had an incredible introduction to Nimbin, because within three weeks the whole bottle went that night and everybody knew me. But I lived in Nimbin for the whole year, and I survived on jobs. One day I went to the job vacancy board, end up with a job there. And there was helping the artist to upgrade the murals, all the pictures of Nimbin. Mason: (07:26) Oh, nice. Jost: (07:26) And I got this beautiful job, for six months paid, to, to work on the murals and all those pictures. Mason: (07:32) Yeah. Jost: (07:33) And people came up, "How did you get the job?" Mason: (07:36) Yeah. Jost: (07:36) I said, "I went to the job vacancy board." There was only one job on that job vacancy board in 20 years. Mason: (07:45) I mean, there's some kind of flow there. Jost: (07:47) Yeah, it's sort of faith, yeah? Mason: (07:48) Yeah. Obviously, there's some kind of faith. I mean, like some kind of, you bring in the lady sky dancer kind of energy as well. You would have been like, yeah, you're cruising on some kind of etheric reality. Jost: (07:58) Yeah. Mason: (07:59) And so, the whole time, did you maintain your interest in Chinese medicine and Taoism during this? Jost: (08:05) Yes. All along. Because, always when I was doing the drugs, it always is working with Yin and Yang symbol that came to me all the time. Mason: (08:12) In artistry? Jost: (08:13) Yeah, in artistry. Yeah. I just saw those symbols all the time. And I did the Chinese philosophy. Every poetry I could get, I was putting down. I was looking for the Chinese artists books. Obviously, when I lived in Nimbin, I lived in [inaudible 00:08:28] and I lived with someone who introduced me to the macrobiotic cooking, the Chinese cooking. And then, I learned about Tai chi, I learned about Qigong. I mean, I came from Amsterdam heavy on drugs, addicted to speed and every possible drug known to man, I came to Nimbin and I got off drugs. Mason: (08:50) Yeah. I mean, yeah, that's very interesting. Jost: (08:50) So, I went to Nimbin to get off drugs. Mason: (08:52) Yeah. Jost: (08:54) And, so actually I didn't do much drugs in Nimbin. Mason: (08:57) What was it about where you were at? Jost: (08:59) Because, I arrived really broken from the drugs, because I tried to get the Tao on drugs. Mason: (09:05) Interesting. Jost: (09:06) I tried to reach that consciousness on drugs. I tried to reach it. And because I had access to as many drugs as I wanted, there was no limitations to how much I could explore. And I realised very quickly, it will not work. I realised by then, "Okay, it shows me what I need and what I want, but it will not deliver." Mason: (09:29) And so, okay, let's talk about that peak experience, because that's something that comes up again and again. How do you see the relevance of using these psychedelics now in the search for the Tao. And then there's one thing I've said there, there's a bit of contradiction there in terms of searching for the Tao in the first place. Jost: (09:50) I've done the drug, so I can't really judge drugs. So, it would be hypocritical. My personal experience is you don't need the drugs to find it. Mason: (09:59) Yeah, right. Jost: (10:01) I actually haven't done drugs for over 35 years. Not because I shouldn't have drugs, it's because I write books about it. I actually don't want, because it just takes me backwards not forwards. So, because I studied under that Chinese master, I studied in all kinds of Chinese martial art practices and meditation practices and I've explored really good revenues with them, with all kinds of avenues with masters I met in my time. And I was explored to cosmic. I was introduced to cosmic consciousness via techniques. And that took me further as on the drugs. I couldn't go further. Then, I met those techniques, and in particular with under [inaudible 00:10:40], who run the transcendental meditation with the Maharishi in the '60s. I met him and he was my main... the main guru I followed. And he was a friend of Osho. We're talking back obviously 25, 30 years when it all started. And so, he introduced me to the cosmic consciousness via a meditation technique that took the next level from the transcendental meditation to the spontaneous expression that the transcendental meditation only you could do in a contained form by sitting down. Mason: (11:11) Yeah. Jost: (11:11) So, they had this big fall out in the '60s. [inaudible 00:11:16]... that you actually need to learn, make the body stand up to express your energies more effectively so you can actually open up all the [inaudible 00:11:22] channel and all the other points. So, the water [inaudible 00:11:25] points that all lead up to the brain to hold them up for this aspect of the cosmic consciousness that's all within us. According to my personal experience in having studied both modalities, like the cosmic consciousness of walking by the meditation and having done LSD and mescaline and etc, and all the mushrooms, there start on the same pathways. There start there. But, the technique goes further, simply because when you take a drug, you've got a chemical running through your system and it directs you what to do. Whereas, if you don't have a chemical, you're spontaneous. You can take it to a level where you're not subject to the chemical. Jost: (12:08) So, the chemical can take you to say to step eight, but it may leave you at step eight. So, you start at step one, bang straight to step eight. It can do that within 20 minutes, but then the chemical may leave you there, because you got a software now running through your system. Mason: (12:26) Well, this is the whole nature of having a complete system that through antiquity right has been proven and in its holistic nature can work in moving a human forward verse the Western what we do is we'll take one particular meditation technique out of a very advanced system, and then apply that, and then sit there excessively with it. And you see like with transcendental meditation, right? Jost: (12:46) Yeah. Mason: (12:47) So, how did you complete the system? Obviously, you've just moved through different techniques and adopted what you need out of them. Is that something that just happened for you through your will or intention or subconsciously? Or, did you purposely go and look for that? Jost: (13:01) Because, I want more. Mason: (13:02) Yeah. Okay. Jost: (13:04) I want more. I'm the classic definition of an addict. I want more. Mason: (13:06) Does that still motivate you? Jost: (13:10) I search. Mason: (13:11) Are you still searching, or is that- Jost: (13:14) I've got really good techniques now, because I'm 61 years old. So, I've obviously have found my ways, my techniques I can work with. But there are those techniques I work with, firstly of all this, the cosmic consciousness via the meditation technique derived from the Vedas, which is the VC environment cosmic meditation. Which Is spontaneous expression. So that is the equivalent in the Taoist tradition, is the yuanyou meditation, the ecstatic travel. So, that's spontaneous. But then, I also study the lineage of the Tai Chi, of the Chen family. So, the Chen family, has got an enormous, powerful way to get to your right up to the top, but it's way of the body. Mason: (14:01) Who's the Chen family? Jost: (14:02) The Chen family started from the Chen village. They're the ones who started Tai chi in the 1600s. Mason: (14:07) Wow. Okay. Jost: (14:09) We're talking 1640 when the general in that Chen village introduced the first form that is now in the West, known as Tai chi. It wasn't martial art, but he took it from the Buddhist and from the Taoist. So, there's a taoist cultivation principle in there, the Buddhist transcendence and the ability to generate your energy so you can fight and be a victor, so you can win. So, it's martial art. So, it's a combination of a longevity of strengths, of power, martial art, but also transcendence way, the Buddhist view. And so, that form was fiercely guarded for 400 years by the Chen family. Because in those days, when you develop a form, you don't show others, because it's your livelihood of survival. Because, your form gives you the strengths over others. Which is why in the 1800s, all the bodyguards for the caravans would travel the country and to protect the cars off the bandits, they used Chen fighters that are cheap people from the Chen village, because they were the best fighters. Jost: (15:22) And so, the Chen Tai Chi utilizes this opening up the cosmic consciousness in a massive, in an extremely grounded way. So, you become very, very solid. Really so solid, you can't move a Chen fighter. It's just bang, you're solid like a pyramid. You just root yourself into the ground. You're trying to move like a Chen fighter, it's not possible. You can take a big Mack, truck, not possible. And they're doing all kinds of experiments and presentations and demonstrations on YouTube, where those 10 fighters can't be moved by 100 people. So, you developed this enormous solidity, this enormous power that is incredible. And it's all in the body. Mason: (16:05) Yeah. Jost: (16:05) And there's always the Jing. And the Jing, then to the Shen, and then obviously the Qi. And/or Jing, Qi, Shen, whichever way you want to put first, but it's works via what we've given. Because, the strengths, the power that the Chen family tapped into and developed over the hundreds of years, based on the Taoist principle, but is now available to people. That allows them to utilize this in order to deal with obstacles in life, in order to become strong, in order to become fit. Jost: (16:35) So, what I learned with my cosmic consciousness techniques, especially with my hippie life and things like that back in the... 40 years ago- Mason: (16:42) Yeah. You got to really explore. Jost: (16:43) Yeah. You go right out there, but not grounded. Mason: (16:49) Yeah. That sounds familiar. Jost: (16:51) So, I went right out there. So, when I was 22, 21, 19 with all the drugs, I was just so out there. I could see the whole creation of the universe. I was as ready to tell God what to do. Mason: (17:04) Yeah. I hear you. Highly existential. Jost: (17:09) Boom! Mason: (17:09) Yeah. Jost: (17:11) So out there, and understanding everything. I even could've looked at a quantum mechanics formula and, "Yeah. I get this." It's unbelievable. Mason: (17:23) Well, that's like there is a somewhat reality to whether you can intellectually ground in and an apply something being tapped into that source field where all information comes from. Jost: (17:34) Yeah, that's it. You tap into it. It's like, it's all there. And the drugs take you there, but they don't teach you how you get there, and they don't tell you and they don't teach you how to return. Yes. Mason: (17:46) And then, how to take any kind of any kind of... how to realise and form anything in reality with what you've tapped into as well. Jost: (17:56) Yeah. It's called to integrate it. Mason: (17:57) Yeah. Jost: (17:58) And most importantly, how to tell others what it is. You can't communicate with others. Mason: (18:03) Yeah. Jost: (18:03) So, I went right out there and I realized very quickly when I expressed my position, which was totally removed from the local point that other people were operating on. If I then reflected my perception of reality from my point of view, the people at the local point couldn't find... they couldn't get me. And as I more and more realized, it's not of any use. Mason: (18:31) That's a harrowing realization when you find that no longer... that's not useful. Jost: (18:37) Yeah. So you see it, but you don't know what to do with that. Mason: (18:40) Yeah. Okay. Jost: (18:41) Yeah. Mason: (18:42) And so, that was a catalyst for you whenever you want more. You got frustrated. Jost: (18:45) First of all, it made me angry. Mason: (18:46) Yeah. Well, was that because you've done so much? You've done so much work and you'd realized so much and yet you couldn't... Was that what was frustrating? Jost: (18:54) Yeah. First of all, what happened to you, first, I couldn't express. I could say, but I couldn't express it suitably nor effectively. Mason: (19:01) Yeah. [inaudible 00:19:02], I kind of get that when you're like, "Hey, I experienced this." And people go, "Oh yeah, no, I know what you mean." You're like, "No, you don't." And that frustration that you can't actually communicate who you are genuinely as a person, right? You don't have the stamina, or the... You don't have the ability to slow down and consciously, consistently communicate who you are with the world, right? You need to do everything right- Jost: (19:28) Not slow, not consistent, all over the place, because obviously that what held my perception together is Yin. So, whatever I perceived, it didn't have a connection. For me, it was obvious, but for others who are trying to observe, they couldn't follow. That's classified as psychosis. Mason: (19:49) Yeah, absolutely. Jost: (19:50) So, I developed all kinds of various levels of psychosis. Which was very interesting once again, because by being right out there and actually unable to integrate, you get an incredible insight into how society works, because you an outsider looking in, Timothy Leary. Yeah? So, suddenly I was out there watching in, but couldn't go in. And first of all that made me angry, because if the organism can't express itself, that other people want to listen to and follow, the Yang rises. That means the Yang and the liver rises, and it's anger. So, which means in those days it translated, I became an anarchist. So, from the hippie, I became an anarchist. Now, I become angry with society, so I started to blame society. Mason: (20:40) Which is the classic pattern. Jost: (20:41) Yeah. I told people, "Society is fucked. We are going to fucking blow this all up." Mason: (20:45) Well, that's somewhat even the, as you come back down, it's almost a search for identity. You need something to oppose in order to get some formation for yourself, right? And who you are and what you stand for. Jost: (20:57) Yeah, because you need to be integrated. Mason: (21:00) Yeah. Jost: (21:00) The thing is we, this is the thing as being in this physical form of being here in this world is we need to be working with others. At the soul, we are united with everyone. But when we incarnate into this world, we feel separation. And then, we open up with drugs. We're going to back to the cosmic consciousness, where everything's united. But now, I can't integrate that. Which is why it made me angry. And everyone that was with me in my times, or my hippy buddies, we all became anarchist. Jost: (21:31) So, we started getting very violent with these cops and demonstrations. And yeah, it became dark. It became very, very dark. And so, it was more a means of trying to make sense of myself, as you said. It's right. And then, I had this opportunity back in, we're talking... just in the turn of 1980 to 1981, I had an opportunity to escape, because by that time the police was after me, the army was after me, the drug bust went bad, the drug dealers were after me, the bikers were after me. It was a little too much. Mason: (22:07) That screw your head just a little bit too much. Jost: (22:10) So, I lived illegal already in the underground. But if the bikers are also after you, it's like, "Get out." Mason: (22:19) That's when it's real. Yeah. Jost: (22:21) And, on this Sunday night, someone offered me to go to Australia on a plane to be a translator. And within three days, I was on the plane. I had no idea what I was doing. This is one of the things you go with the flow. So, I landed in Sydney in 1981, and I landed... So, that was in Sydney. And obviously, in those days the plane flew four days. And four days in a plane as a drug user, my God, you'd have to take a lot of drugs with you. Yeah? So, obviously I had packs of, stacks of gear with me. When I arrived in Sydney, I realized that I had a big block of Lebanese hash in my pocket I forgot to smoke. And when I was in the queue, I thought, "I'd better go to the toilet to destroy the evidence." Because I thought, "If they're going to find this, it's not a good way to start my journey in Australia." Obviously I looked very suspicious. Long hair, bare feet, green pants, purple jacket. I didn't look quite normal. Mason: (23:17) Yeah. The whole look, yeah. Jost: (23:21) So, I went off to the toilet to destroy the evidence, but a custom officer followed me. And I thought, "Oh shit, I can't destroy it." And I thought, "Okay, maybe they haven't noticed me. Maybe everything's got to be fine." So, I got to the custom, to the queue, and obviously straight they took me into the room and searched everything. And they found the hashish. And they said, "What's this?" And I said, "Look, I forgot to smoke it." And they looked very, very puzzled and the found all the amphetamine pills, I had a lot of drugs with me. And they said, "What's this?" And I said, "I'm a junkie. I need it to stay calm." They found the bottle with the LSD liquid which was in a nose drop bottle. This guy says, "Nose drop." So, they didn't look at that. They didn't taste it for some lucky reason. And then they told me to fuck off. And I thought, "gee this is a very rude country." Mason: (24:10) Yeah. Jost: (24:11) It was like, Australia, my God, different to Amsterdam and Germany where they don't swear. And I said, "Where should I go?" And they looked at me and said, "You go to Nimbin." Mason: (24:21) No way. Jost: (24:23) So, I've never heard of Nimbin. So, I got out of the custom, I asked him, "Can I get my hashish back? And they said, "No, fuck off." So, for some reason I didn't get thrown in jail. Nothing. One of those weird stories. It wasn't that much in hindsight, it was only about five grams. But it was good block of beautiful Lebanese red hashish. And anyway, I got out of the airport and hitchhiked north, for Nimbin. And I arrived. I'll never forget that. All the cars until Lismore looked ordinary. Mason: (24:59) Yeah. Jost: (25:00) Then hitchhiking from Lismore to Nimbin, everything changed. Cars stopping with three wheels and three different wheels and the goat in the back and weird looking people. I said, "This is my world." Mason: (25:12) Yeah, I hear you. All right. So then you land and... Okay. So, we've kind of almost gone from that, from the void comes the one, the Tao, and then the two, the Yin and Yang. Jost: (25:22) Yes, correct. Mason: (25:23) So, the Yin and Yang is a continuing concept for you and obviously a reality and continues to be today. Where have you from that period to now, how have you related to Yin and Yang in life? And I know this is a huge conversation, but especially for people listening who haven't quite understood the realities and intricacies and all of Yin and Yang dominating and being the reality of their body and the universe, where are you now in terms of communicating in Yin Yang in your relationship with it? Jost: (25:56) Yeah. Obviously, I understand that everyone of us is on a journey here. And obviously in Chin... In the taoist philosophy, they call it, your contract with heaven. So, the highest form of medicine in Chinese Medicine is nourishing your destiny. Because I've been using Chinese Medicine for 30 years now, and as a registered acupuncturist I obviously work with all kinds of people from all different walks of life, but I never ever used the herbs to treat a symptom. I always identify the person's destiny first. Mason: (26:36) Dude, yeah. Speaking our language. Jost: (26:38) Yeah. Because, everyone, it's just like the universe. Everything is created with a purpose, and that's the Tao. The Tao runs everything. So, we know this purpose, but not so much on conscious level we can feel it, but very, very difficult to put into words. And so, Yin and Yang, the fluctuation between the polar forces guides me along this journey. That means I get drawn to an absolute. Then, I realize it's not me, but it shoots me to the next absolute, which is the opposite. And then, it's not me either, then it shoots me to the next absolute. So, it's like a process. So, between Yin and Yang. Jost: (27:16) So, obviously for me it was like, first of all, getting involved with the cultural evolution back in '68 when I realized it had nothing to do with Taoism. And so, I was always exposed to communism. Then, I actually realized, I found the real modality, which is why the Tao isn't, but that took me to the drugs. The drugs then took me to the anarchism, to violence and pain, which then led me to the realization it's within. And that led me to the meditation, which, so that was the Yin aspect. And then from the Yin aspect, I realized I need to strengthen myself, otherwise I can't express what I see. So, if I'm weak and I can't fulfill my destiny. So, in order to fulfill my destiny, in order to live my destiny, I have to go Yang. And that took me to Chinese martial art. And Chinese martial art, well, we're talking now 35 years ago, my first exposure was kung-fu. And I practiced very hard. Jost: (28:13) And that then led me to the Chen family, the Chen Tai Chi, which is not the Tai chi that you see people do in parks. You got to look that up on YouTube, Chen Tai chi, C-H-E-N, the origin Tai Chi. It's a different world. It's very, very intense, very powerful, incredibly expressive, but it's hard to learn. It's really hard on your body. You have to work very hard. So, from the Yin, the hippie aspect of going to the cosmic consciousness, which is like without the effort, I then was taken to the Yang with a lot of effort. So, for me, the Yin Yang is always the mix between receiving, perception and having a mental idea, "oh gee I love this." And then the yang, the effort to integrate that. So, which is Gongfu, effort over time. That's the classic translation of Kung-Fu, effort over time. Jost: (29:09) So, that means I constantly get the idea what I want, the vision, the beauty via poetry or via music or via meditation or even via sexual practices, I get the idea, but then the Yang via the effort, I moved towards it. So, this is one thing that I've never really discovered in the Western world, the perfect blend between your vision, your idea and the effort. So, in the West, we see success strategies, but they don't integrate with your heart so much. Because in order to integrate your heart, you need to feel it. So, now you need a practice that actually takes you into feeling. And so, this is where meditation, cosmic consciousness meditation come in too. That's where sexual practices come in. That's alchemy. So, I need to feel it, because if I put into word what I think my destiny is, then it's concept. Then, it's most likely based on a conditioning and an upbringing from a previous time or parents or I follow security principles. It's based on all kinds of other values. It's interfered with values. Jost: (30:16) But if I go alchemically into it, that means via practice, and the Tao is alchemic. Alchemy is the way of the body. So, by working with the body, I then can actually feel it. And once I feel it, I then moved towards it. And that feeling is what they call the Yuanyu, is the ecstatic travel. So, that's where the drugs come into. So, the drugs can show you, but unless you put the effort in, the Gongfu, which is the Yang, it will not work. So, to me that's the Yin and Yang. Mason: (30:49) Yeah. And then almost, the whole idea behind the drugs and the plant medicines is you become externally reliant on something to be able to show you that vision, which is innately in there rather than a daily practice being... that tune in and feel. Jost: (31:03) Yes. In Chinese medicine we always say, "Don't think, feel." Mason: (31:09) Okay. Jost: (31:10) The whole training and the Tai Chi, "Don't think, feel." So, we've constantly like every morning and we go first into, into feeling. So, I never start the day with thinking. So, this is where I work with Yin and Yang, because the thinking takes me into the Yin not into the Yang. And so, I need to start the day with going into Yang first. And that means I'm not thinking. So, I'm actually moving. So, of course when we wake up, we want to think about all kinds of stuff, but the idea is to shut up. I spend a lot of time in, having studied under the masters, and personally direct the training under them. It was every morning. You just don't think. Mason: (31:53) Yeah. Jost: (31:54) You don't think. Mason: (31:54) Which is the practice. Jost: (31:56) Yeah. Which I explained in that book Clock on to Health in the large intestine chapter. Because, when we wake up, the energy, you see the Tao is very, very intelligent. Yeah? The Tao has given us everything what we need in order to fulfill our destiny. But in order to find our destiny, first of all, we need to feel not think. Mason: (32:21) Yes. Jost: (32:21) Yeah? Mason: (32:22) Yes. Jost: (32:22) And in order to feel, not think, the Tao has given us the uniform, and the Qi starts with Large Intestine and Lung, Lung and Large Intestine. And the Large Intestine is the organ that lets go off negative thinking. Mason: (32:38) Yes. Jost: (32:39) So, every morning we got the opportunity to let go of thinking. Because, forgetfulness is the highest form in Taoism, the art of forgetting. But what they mean with the art of forgetting is not to think about it, to feel. But that's something you can't put into words. You try to do, and I would say we tried to do, but you can't really do it. Because, I wake up and I think about a certain area. I'll wake up immediately and think about my books, my business, what I need doing, but I can't make sense of my thoughts. Obviously, I can make sense of my thoughts, but they don't suit me. So, as soon as I get up and go into my practice, I go into feeling. Large intestine takes over, and then it delegates my thoughts into the direction that they need to go, so they're not a hindrance to me. Mason: (33:31) Yes. Jost: (33:31) So, that's where the Tai Chi goes into. That's why it's a martial art. When you go in front of an opponent and you start thinking, you get wrecked. It has to be spontaneous. Because, if you don't think, then you've got the highest response. And then it's always correct, because then you don't have an opinion about your opponent, nor do you have a judgment, nor do you have a feeling about any criteria. So, you are in a perfect state of neutrality. Mason: (34:07) And you're in reality. Jost: (34:09) Yes. You are. You're real there, you're right at the moment. And you actually look at that person as what the person is, not what you think it is. So, you're not using judgment, you're not using analysis. And then, you realize there's no need to fight that person anyway. Mason: (34:25) Yet. Jost: (34:25) which is why Tai Chi, this is the interesting thing, it's so Yang, but it takes you so Yin. Mason: (34:33) In original. You're talking about original Tai Chi. Jost: (34:35) Yeah. They are the most peaceful people I've ever met. It's makes you totally peaceful, because you actually don't see the point to fight. But, you are a little better. You can immediately change the situation, but there is no interest. Mason: (34:51) Well, that's the irony and the cosmic giggle of the universe, right? Jost: (34:56) Yeah. That's the Yin and Yang. So, you are in the state of Yin, but you're very Yang. When you meet those masters, they're so compassionate. They don't have an issue with you. They don't judge you. It doesn't matter what you do. Whatever habits you have, it's irrelevant, because there's not thinking. It's pure feeling. It's just like goes back to the old days when people met in the park and hit a few joints. You just feel with each other. Mason: (35:21) Yeah. Jost: (35:21) Yes. Mason: (35:22) Yeah. That's the peak experience to what- Jost: (35:24) Yeah, the peak experience, just feel with each other. In the morning have a joint, the day is your friend. Yeah? So, it's like all this hippie festivals I went into. Have a joint and straight away you communicate what you're feeling not thinking. Mason: (35:36) And then having the, I don't know whether it's the practice or the ability or just getting to the point where you're so frustrated that you need to constantly go to something external to get that experience, even just going and having the intention. This is why I want to talk about the day plans and clock... Jost: (35:52) Yes. Mason: (35:52) Because, for me that fits, that slides into the lifestyle design based on the reality of how Qi transforms in our body. And it's obviously a very ancient system. It's one I feel has become, if you look at the TCM body clock and the organ clock, it's become something that... everyone's like, "Oh yeah, no, I've seen that before. This times that, this times that," and there's this like breadth of awareness but not that much depth of actually being to able to know what's going on in our organs at that time. Jost: (36:23) Yeah. Mason: (36:24) But, what I'm thinking is just like, with that having a joint in the morning with mates and just getting into that connection, then being able to go like those masters you're talking about at 80, at 90 years old, "What does my whole life and my lifestyle and my practice needs to look like in order to embody that, and not only feel this level of connection and compassion and love for everyone, but be transcending even what I'm feeling here on this substance and embody that and then share that with the world," that takes serious consideration. And that's kind of what I feel, for me, that's what I kind of get in... I've gone through Clock On. I've got my copy at home, and been going through it. You know what I mean? Mason: (37:04) Like, "Yeah, I'm going to really consider this organ clock more than I have in the past and really give this a few years to permeate me and allow me to understand [inaudible 00:37:13], allow me to understand my own Qi and my own wu-xing five element phase transformation. That's what I see as the point of this, is designing a day where we can tonify from the two things, the three things, the Jing, Qi, Shen, so that then we can do exactly what you're saying in terms of being able to embody these things. So, I don't know if that's got a correct assessment, but that's been my takeaway so far. But, is that kind of fair in to what the intention is behind clocking on to this? Jost: (37:47) Yeah. What happens is that, okay, in a Taoist tradition, our information of who we are, our true nature is energetic. Mason: (37:56) Yeah. Jost: (37:56) And the structure is, of our nature, is structured by meridian systems. So, before we incarnate in this physical form, we are meridians. And we actually, the energy organs exist before we incarnate. Mason: (38:12) And the embryology is kind of proving that as well, right? Jost: (38:17) Yeah. In Chinese medicine, we have an energy organ and a physical organ. Which is why scholars all over the world, the academic agreement is, "Let me talk Chinese, spleen. We have to write the spleen in upper cases." So, when we talk spleen in Chinese Medicine, we have spleen and Spleen. The upper case spleen is different to the lower case spleen. The lower case spleen resembles Western medicine. The upper case spleen is Chinese medicine. And Chinese medicine has identified that this energy organ exist before we are born in physical form, and it will stay with us when we leave. Mason: (38:59) And it's referring more so to the Qi. Jost: (39:03) It's an energy. So, what happens is that each... in order to structure this body, in order to structure the soul, which is a complex entity anyway, we are really complex beings. And, I mean, the whole of creation is very complex. But in order to hold this unity together, it's run by 12 organ systems. And that's why the 12 [inaudible 00:39:23] universe. 12 hours in the day, 12 months in a year. And the Chinese and Western philosophers agreed on the 12th. 12 months and 12 years, because they work with the yearly cycles and monthly cycles. And 12 hours in the day, by two makes it 24 hours. So, it's all held together by time. And as quantum mechanics has identified, space is in time. So, in order for the physical to exist, first of all it needs time. So, as soon as you take time out of the equation, the physical collapses. It can't exist. Mason: (39:57) Yeah. Jost: (39:57) So, what it means to be in the physical world rather than the spiritual world is, here in the physical world, we have time, in a spiritual world, we don't have time. So, when this organ system now goes into the physical system, now it's regulated by time. And the Taoist already tapped into that 5,000 years ago for some reason. Without them having a perception of a clock, they knew that it's time that holds it all together. Which is why so many quantum mechanics look at Chinese Medicine, which is why Niels Bohr, used the Yin Yang, as his logo as a symbol, when he did his coat of arms. Mason: (40:38) Yeah. Right. Jost: (40:39) And so, it's all done. If you put it up on internet, it all comes up. Niels Bohr, Yin and Yang, coat of arms. Because, he understood what quantum mechanics is trying to say. The Tao has already tapped into it many thousands of years before them. And I realized that you'd never be able to put two things together, as Heisenberg uncertainty principle says, "One cannot know the velocity of a particle and not the direction of the particle at the same time." So, you cannot be Yin and then Yang. It's always happening at the same time. So, it's Yin and Yang. That's why it never says anywhere, Yin or Yang. Mason: (41:19) So, is this the concept that they don't, they cannot exist without each other? Jost: (41:23) Yes. But it never is, like you can't understand who you are and the direction at the same time. Which is why thinking about your destiny will never work. It's based on the uncertainty principle, Heisenberg uncertainty. So, "One cannot know the velocity of the particle and at the same time know the direction of the particle." So, you can't know who you are and know the direction you go by knowing, you need to feel it. Because then, Yin and Yang becomes one. Jost: (41:48) So, when people do drugs, Yin and Yang become one. When we observe, academically or intellectually a situation, it's a Yin or Yang. But once you take a joint, it's all one. Which is why when you're with people, it becomes like, you feel with each other on a... You know each other. Mason: (42:09) Yeah. Jost: (42:09) You can go into other experience that, you can go with people you don't speak their language and you smoke hashish and you suddenly connect, unite. Yeah? Mason: (42:18) Mm-hmm (affirmative). Jost: (42:19) So, there's a lot going on. So, Yin and Yang is really exemplifying what that all is. And the Qi cycle put the whole complexity together via time. Because if you take time out of the equation, it will collapse. These days, people live, make up their own times, which is why they got all kinds of symptoms. Mason: (42:39) Yes. Jost: (42:40) 5:00 AM is different to 12:00 PM. 12:00 PM is different to 5:00 PM. And it has got a totally different influence on your body. If it has a different influence on your body, that means there's a totally different velocity and a different direction. It means there's a different feeling. So, how you feel at 5:00 AM is different to how you feel at 5:00 PM, but that feeling is essentially in order to understand who you are. Jost: (43:02) So, the Qi cycle gives you the matrix of how to tap into these incredible complex information that your soul is, structured via the meridians and the 12 energy organs. So, each energy organ has got a very specific information. And the Taoists called it the orbs. The orb of the Spleen, which is the heavenly messenger. So, each organ has got a very specific information about who you are as your soul. There's all your akashic record is in each of the organs. You can tap into anything. So, the Spleen knows exactly when it comes about your intellect. Your Kidney knows everything about who you are in terms of your willpower. The Liver knows exactly when it comes in terms of your direction. But, putting that into words is not possible. So, we need to feel it. Feel, don't think. Jost: (43:52) So, by living the Qi cycle, we tap into this different time zones, which then creates a sink into this energy organ. And now, it's almost like you open up a gateway. And every two hours, there's a different gateway to perceive a different perception about who you are, what you're feeling. If you integrate that now with action, which is doing, which is now you give the particle its direction, first of all, when you zone in to the time zone, it's a velocity. Now, you give it its direction by doing according to what it needs to be done at this time. You actually feel what you're supposed to be doing. Mason: (44:31) Yeah. Jost: (44:32) It's absolutely magic. So, suddenly life gets mystical and rather than mundane. Mason: (44:40) I like that. I can do a little bit more mystical. And quite often something that's occurring in the West, is reverse in the East, is the East is, it is a reality and a fabric of society that... Let's just make it really obvious one. Qi exists, verse in the West where something that... sometimes just even talking about the Qi cycle to someone off the street, it's known as a bit of a, it's interesting like a mystical Chinese concept, a Chinese medicine concept. And quite often, I'm just curious as to your experience and really... And likewise, we're educating people about the reality of Qi and Taoist theory, so I can relate. But, how are you going about teaching people about this Qi cycle to Western reductionist minds that almost need to go like, "well, what are you talking about? What?" What is the Qi?" Jost: (45:39) It's very, very simple. That's why I use archetypes in my book Clock on. I don't talk about the large intestine Qi. I talk about the cleaner. Okay. What I'm saying here is, you can't put into words what Qi is. Mason: (45:51) Yeah. Jost: (45:52) Because the definition of Qi is information, energy and consciousness. Quantum physics can measure the impact consciousness has on matter, but it can't measure consciousness. So, you will never be able to put Qi into words. So, in China, over the thousands of years, everyone has developed an association with Qi. So, you go into a village and you talk with an 80 year old man, and it's, "Oh, the Qi is very good here." The association is on common ground. Everyone has got no association with that word. In the Western world, there's not association with that word yet. So, when you talk to someone Qi, if they have an association, it's most likely so removed from what it is, because they don't have the experience in it yet. It will take a few generations for us to actually have an association. Jost: (46:40) So, at this stage, in the Western world, most people don't have enough association in their unconscious about the word Qi. So, when they hear the word Qi, they don't know what to associate with it. So, it goes mental. So, once you've got mental there, it's not Qi. Mason: (46:56) Yeah. I mean, once you try to intellectualize the concept- Jost: (46:59) You can't. Niels Bohr already realized you can't put it into words. The quantum mechanics already understood it's not possible, because you've got consciousness. Once you gone into consciousness, you've got all kinds of dilemmas, because you get the double slit experiment, where the particle goes through both slits at the same time, but only one particle arrives at the wall. And kind of like quantum mechanics full of paradox. And that's Chinese Medicine. So, when you talk Qi, you're always with a paradox, because you've got the Yin and Yang at the same time. But when you talk, it's Yin or Yang. Jost: (47:30) So, you will never be able to put Yin and Yang and Qi into words. But, because I've worked with so many people and I did so many talks in my time, I understand the dilemma of, "okay, how can you create an association in people?" Which is why this book, Clock on, I worked with, "okay, what is an association?" Instead of me talking about large intestine Qi, I talk about the cleaner. Instead of talking about the Spleen, the energy Spleen, I talk about the builder. Instead of talking about the Small Intestine Qi, I talk about the judge. Because, Chinese medicine started with archetypes and storytelling and poetry, not with the textbook. Chinese medicine didn't start at a textbook. It started with storytelling. The shamans told stories. It had beautiful feelings. It evolved the feeling in people. And that feeling then got ingrained and now develop an association. When they heard the word, it brought the feeling up. So, in Chinese Medicine, you always have to work with both. You have to bring the word to arise a feeling, otherwise it will not work. It's not based on science. Mason: (48:42) Well, and then people are trying to lay them over each other. Jost: (48:45) They can't. Mason: (48:45) And they can't, right? Jost: (48:45) No. It's a fairy tale. Mason: (48:48) I mean, and that's the interesting in what you were just saying about if you say Spleen, and in conversation, you almost need to say Spleen earth in order to... because you can't go capital S spleen. Jost: (49:04) Upper case spleen. It just goes on and on and on. Mason: (49:10) And that is the interesting thing in terms of, I feel like most Westerners learning these concepts is arriving in an acceptance and acknowledges... And a feeling state rather than a thinking state when tuning in to this Qi. And rather going, "Okay, what time is it? Oh, okay, I'm waking up at Liver time. Maybe physiologically something is happening to my Liver." And feeling like that possibly could be, and there is probably a reality to that. Jost: (49:40) Which is there in the correlation, the correspondence to that Liver time isn't actually in the large intestine time. It's never at the time. Mason: (49:45) Well, that's the interesting thing. You can't think about the physiology necessarily. That's where I've tripped up, years ago when I was starting out, it's where I kept on tripping up. And probably when I talked to most young acupuncturists not getting taught the reality of not trying to fit this Qi model or like this reality, this gigantic system into Western pathology. Although there can be crossovers, that's fun and interesting, but you need to stay within that system that's respecting the classics, right? Jost: (50:21) Yeah. My observation is they work very well together as long as you don't try and explain with Western words what Chinese phrases are. Mason: (50:30) I think that's the distinction. Yeah. Jost: (50:30) And you can use a Chinese to explain the West. I believe that both work very well, because I work with supplements which are based on Western sciences, I work with all kinds of Western science principles, but that's a different approach. It's Yin and Yang. You can't explain Yin with Yang. They are a totally different approach, but if you put the two things together, that's what I believe the future is. Mason: (50:56) Absolutely. Jost: (50:56) Chinese Medicine is fairytale. It's magic, it's psychedelic. It takes you into feeling, and it shows you your potential. It's power, it's magic. It makes you strong, incredibly powerful. And, it's longevity. I mean, at my age of 61, I can't relate to men of my age, because- Mason: (51:18) Too much Jing. Jost: (51:19) Yeah. I relate more to the 30 year old, because when I work out, I work out more on the 30 year olds level, not the 61 year old level. So, obviously I go into the Qi. If you go into chi, you always rectify symptoms. You always rectify symptoms. So, that's why I talk in my book Clock On, how to direct it. You wake up to a symptom for a reason, and Large Intestine is designed to move the symptom. So, if you use the Western signs and use Chinese lifestyle, medicine lifestyle, wow that's the potency. And I believe this is where we moving towards. And it was prophesied by Waysun Liao, a famous Tai chi master in 1974, when he wrote that book treatise of Tai Chi, and you talked to the Chen family. He talked about the Chen Tai Chi. Jost: (52:12) I need to say there are a lot of people have a misconception of Tai chi, because what we see in the West, old people in the park is not Tai Chi. It's like saying a skateboard is a Lamborghini. Mason: (52:21) Yeah. I mean, I think that's something that's happened in a lot of these traditional. If you look at yin yoga, then practices like restorative yoga just flopping into a position verse of very active intentional five minute hold in a position that is designed to completely transform and open a meridian, it's a very different concept. So, it's hard fucking work. And that's what Tai Chi being, "Well, this nice. I'm just going with the energy of the universe without going through the methodical work of learning to engage the [crosstalk 00:52:57]. Jost: (52:58) And your legs, and you burn your legs, it's so intense, so painful, so incredible, intense. But then, you just, you can see your direction. You can see your purpose. So, while you do the move, it's enormously intense, but you can see who you are and it moves you. So, it puts you in an altered state immediately. But Waysun Liao prophesied in the 1970s, that what the Chinese started, this [inaudible 00:53:30] and the whole Tai Chi, the Supreme ultimate, not the Tai Chi, the form, but the the supreme ultimate, the yin yang, "What they're tapping to is profound." But he said, it will be completed in the West. Mason: (53:43) Yeah, and well, that integration model is, and that's I think there's this distinction, because this is where it's such... it's slippery. Of course, this is always going to remain slippery. The distinction to not try and layer these two systems over each other, but allow them to sit side by side and work together- Jost: (54:03) If you're trying to sort out Chinese medicine and Western medicine, it's like giving a male, trying to sort out hormonal problems with a woman. Mason: (54:12) Yeah. Jost: (54:12) Or, a woman telling a man what ejaculation should be about, or a man telling a woman how she should psychologically feel. It doesn't work. It's asleep, doesn't work in harmony. Mason: (54:23) Where can I just leave them to be who they are. Jost: (54:27) Work in harmony. You can't understand day, when you're at nighttime. You won't say, "we're getting sick of wet. We need from now only to have dry," or, "we don't need cold anymore. We only have hot," or, "we don't need men anymore, we only have women." It's just bullshit. Mason: (54:50) Yeah, man, sing it. Before we go, for some people that aren't aware of that organ clock, can you run us through kind of an example? A very general, because obviously this is a huge conversation. You've got two books really tapping into it, but can you run us through an example? Jost: (55:15) Yes. It's very simple. Mason: (55:16) Yeah. Okay. Jost: (55:16) Yeah. You wake up today to let go of the previous day. Mason: (55:19) Yes. Jost: (55:19) So, you wake up to Large Intestine time. That means, Large Intestine is you go to the toilet. Mason: (55:24) Yeah. Jost: (55:25) You clean out your system. That's your cleaner. Before you start the day, you clean out your unit. You clean your apartment, you clean everything out. That means Large Intestine gets rid of negative thoughts. If you start the day without cleaning, the negative thoughts of yesterday will dominate you today. So, in the Qi cycle lifestyle, we always start with letting go of the old first, because it's a new day. So, we do these via Qi practices. We do this with yoga, with core training, but we don't engage with the work yet. We don't engage with talking to people. We don't engage with having breakfast yet. First of all, detox the system. And that's what pretty much like all of Western medicine cancer researchers revealed, you want to get rid of the bad cells. You want to eliminate toxins and you want to get rid of waste products, because if the bad cells, negative cells go, the good cells can flourish. Jost: (56:29) So, in order to be healthy, first of all, we need to let go. So, that's like Large Intestine. Let go. Because if it goes, bang, then you can come in. So then, because we let go, the next thing is, we're working with the peacemaker, which is stomach Qi. And that means after we have cleaned out everything, we now sit down and have a mindful breakfast. So, we have nice, we've got to be aware we're not getting up and have breakfast. We clean out first, detox. Then, whatever time it's required to do that. Then, when we finish, we move into sitting down mindful and eating a warm breakfast. The happiest people I've met in my time in all the East, the happiest and happy, really strongest people all have cooked warm breakfast. But they do practice beforehand. So, I never have fruit juice and stuff like that. Mason: (57:25) You don't go in and dampen the stomach. Jost: (57:26) No. You start with warming. So, the reason why the stomach is called, why I call the stomach the peacemaker is, because the stomach is in fact your system in order to negotiate with other people in harmony. So, if you start the day correctly by going into mindfulness, you then have the ability to engage with others in a peaceful intent. So, it becomes natural. So, you have this 20 minutes where you sit and eat and go mindful and you don't multitask. If you don't, , and you multitask and you stand up and rush around, you're not the peacemaker. You're a troublemaker, because now you get to reactive throughout the day. Because, you didn't let go of your negative thoughts through your practice. You didn't have the peacemaker. You didn't settle in the morning with breakfast. Now, you've got too much negativity and you got to dump it on others. Road rage, anger, telling other people what they should be doing, getting judgemental, critical and things like that. Jost: (58:34) The peace maker means, you're not judgemental. You just going through the day, whatever it is, but you know exactly who you are, so you keep moving. Then after that, after the peacemaker, after a beautiful peaceful breakfast, you go hard. Work very hard. And that's the builder and the emperor and that Spleen and Heart. So, you work very, very hard on your journey, on your job, on whatever needs to be doing. You know who you are, because you have seen who you are and you felt who you are during your morning practice. It was all downloaded via the breakfast. The breakfast gave you the piece, now you work hard. So, it's you start with the Yang, breakfast at Yin, then you go Yang. Then, about one o'clock, it's Small Intestine time and it's now judgment. So, that means you need to sit back and allow the whole day to be looked at. So, you stop rushing. You're in front of the judge, and the judge will look at your case, because you've done already a major part of your day. Because really when you look at, you started the day about by transforming negativity into positivity. You did the detox, you then had peaceful intent set at breakfast. You then worked very hard in your destiny. Then at one o'clock, or 1:30, you sit down... And then you sit down and you have a meal, lunch. Jost: (59:56) And then, in the afternoon you go more into the Yin mode. And then, at five o'clock you go into Kidney time. It means you switch off from the day. And at switch off time, between 5:00 and 7:00, you're actually switching off from the day. Jost: (01:00:13) [inaudible 01:00:13]. Mason: (01:00:16) Jake, you can edit that part, yeah? Jost: (01:00:18) Yeah. [inaudible 01:00:18]. Jost: (01:00:27) So then, this is another important part, between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM is exactly the same importance as between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM. That sometime in the time, you need to switch off from the day, because the Yang phase is moving into the Yin phase. So, the Qi side is all about Yang, Yang, Yang, Yang, going to mid time. And then, from the afternoon it goes into Yin phase. But then, between 5:00 and 7:00, we need to consciously switch off. Once again, we work with the practice, a little bit of Chi Gong, a bit of yoga and it takes us away from thinking into feeling. But because it's supported by the Kidney, and the Kidney is the puppeteer. And the Kidneys are another of Yin and Yang. You actually have a direct access to the scene behind the curtain. Actually you feel mystical in that moment. Jost: (01:01:19) So, the switch off practice, when you look at the ancient cultures, between 5:00 and 7:00, the farmers, everyone, the workers came into the village, into the center and played bowls. They're switching off from the day. Mason: (01:01:32) That's the same with the Italians playing dominoes at the day. Jost: (01:01:34) Yeah. Domino, connecting, not via work, connecting via play. Mason: (01:01:44) Yes. Jost: (01:01:44) So, if you connect via play, you work with Yin and Yang. So, that means you're actually letting go of the day. At the same time, you're embracing the joy of being in the company of others. So, this is all ancient cultures follow the Qi cycle. Mason: (01:02:00) Yeah, you're right. Jost: (01:02:01) And then, between 7:00 and 9:00, they all go home and then you're just by yourself, with your family, with your loved ones, and you go completely into yourself. And that's when you have another meal and a glass of wine. And it's completely just cut off from the day. It is like, now you had security at home. And Pericardium time between 7:00 and 9:00 is actually being at home. And, it's called the bodyguard in my book, because if you get this right, you will actually guard the heart off cardiovascular disease and anxiety and all kinds of other stuff. Because the Pericardium channel is the channel that got discovered in the 1600s hundreds, and it's the main channel used in order to treat CVD, cardiovascular disease, anxiety, depression, etc. And, that you regulate that simply by between 7:00 and 9:00 PM, you're just going into yourself and being with loved ones and you're not doing anything in order to project outside. You guard your heart. It's your body guard. You got your heart. It's like the body guard in front of the prime minister, it ushers all the journalists the way. Mason: (01:03:08) Yeah. Jost: (01:03:09) So, by seven o'clock you're going into your own world. So, it is the pajamas, whatever, cross fitting, whatever. It's irrelevant, as long as you're completely calm. And then, usually, if you follow the cycle so far, at nine o'clock, the energy goes into San Jiao, which is a mystical organ. And I call it in the book the ferry man, because it's actually involved with the lubrication. It's like a ferry man in Venice. And what it is, it's

what I have done we get a lot of feedback from people that are been writing in is that we bring just on that were try to learn some stuff from correct and I think that almost everything will episode I become more knowledgeable it is expanded my mind I think today is exactly where we need to be because we have somebody who's a great storyteller that's got some incredible experiences just throws himself out there that's kind of a sort of how work, doing everything right now and if you're new to the gut check project I think it would you find that what can I both want to do out of the guest is find a little bit about their journey that took them to where they are now because life is a journey to find that you you're going to be satisfied once you know more about yourself and how you know what you want until you have exploded morality so exactly so work we have Cooper read on the show today and he is somebody who is really it's a lightning she actually inspires me and other people is your show converted to cover novel French stuff that I think is actually something that can change both health and mind yeah absolutely happy at think that Cooper has a great story of just being dissatisfied is where he found himself and decided to do something about it so allowable I'm not going to ruin his story that will get to that whenever he joins us here about just so happens that is doing something about it in a field that I have tremendous interest in and medicine is going that way and I think that we will all be talking about this five years from now as how really to improve mental health without question without question real quick of course if you also knew to get project and even if you aren't should always go to love my tummy.com/spoony where on the spoony network so/Bernie will give you are trying to heal outrun teal at a discount that you won't find hardly anywhere else so what is that all 20 oh that makes it so unique to Brown so this is kind of exciting this is my baby right here in a little shout out to Siobhan Sarna who is the head of the IBS SEBO SOS summit because probably much to her relief I finally got done filming my webinar for the experts on that is so nice and we got a chance to one of the reasons why I was looking at the other of future lectures and she's like you're the last one to do this of Mark Pimentel the psyche shroud it is we've got to know Tom Osborne that that is all these other people and Allison C Becker she's like you're holding up the whole show they yell for those who are into keeping the health and follow us and get the emails that we get every week that we send out just be sure and tune in because what Dr. Brown is referencing is see below SOS some and if you've ever been interested in why certain people suffer from G.I. distress and they can't quite find the answers that's kinda what this whole summit is about not everything is going to apply to everyone but there may be something in there for everybody who tunes in supercool about this particular summit and what Siobhan is put together is that you have people that have had different experiences doing different things right and my experience was in trying to find a natural solution for people with reputable bowel syndrome bloating change in bowel habits and that's how we discovered trying to with two trials which have been published and we been out now for about three years and the reality is worse in the same clinical results that we did in those trials which is 4 to 5 people to get better if you have the classic symptoms of when you meet you blokes now the other cool thing since we launched is that we have since learned through other scientists contacting us that the polyphenols in front your action extremely beneficial for you they work on an antiaging level there's data to show that you are living goes up which helps get rid of old and aging cells this data to show that you increase nitric oxide to the muscles so if you're an athlete so it's really exciting I started this journey to try and help people that were bloated that have bacterial overgrowth and we just keep expanding and knocking down your doors and that's what's so exciting about this I'll try to love my tummy.com/spoony putting code spooning SP 00 and why and you can also experience the so this is my baby show little support at least subscribe to get to project either on YouTube or on iTunes choose an email through going to KB MD.com Sino community health.com and you click on contact sheet is an email it's easy that's all you have to do sign up and then in July we will be drawing at least five winners so the public to be more solid and make you kick the science this time why do you call that the signature package what do those two things blend so well together CBD and affronted absolutely no great thing that you're doing with CVD is that everything that you put behind this and this and I'm in if you're listening through the audio only I picked up both the CBD and the John Teal you have real cases that have come through the clinic and was shown improvement so using this combination is what you found to be the most predictable I guess solution for people who had some type of inflammatory issue and I won't go through all the different disease states but essentially combining the CBD with our Tron tale is the polyphenols and allow the CBD to even work better how does a Duke well there's a little enzyme in there that Decker dates are endogenous CBR cannabinoids like Ananda might for instance name FAH and good polyphenol intake actually prevents FAH from becoming overactive in eliminating the CBD from working were supposed to work exactly and so you're taking a science today but that's on, called the signature package they each make each other better and that's how come we teamed up to have the KB MD health CBD powered by Alexa absolutely so likes it like a chair guy got check project thank you for all the new subscriptions as last week that is that is amazing they tell us it would take at least 20 shows and were doing about episode 14 so we certainly appreciate it so now in a move into Dr. Brown what you have on the news topic for today well so on this topic first of all you couple quick shout out side I am horrible with time zones and we were going to have a fantastic Dr. Dr. Gabrielle Lyons she's a medical doctor in Manhattan she is a fitness expert muscle centric protein expert she did her graduate studies looking at protein she was in a call in and where to talk about peptides because that's my article to talk about little bit later peptides and unfortunately she text eventually gritty role in like oh time zone difference forgot about that and so she is a doctor so we couldn't get her to the work you have her own prolonged show trip organizer bring her here or would you be able to do it she's I think due to have a baby pretty soon so I don't want to have a new mom flying around like that which probably zoom her and but she's super smart and the reason why bring up is because we had one of our listeners asked something and this is right in Dr. Lyons were real house I was a said Trisha's email Tricia called in and said hey can you recommend a Kazen free protein powder now coming up soon in a week or two were to have another fitness expert named Max Fairchild she is super smart peptide expert he formulates nutritional products he's really the one answer that question Chris were to get that to you right away I can look it up but honestly go with the people that have already done the homework they've Artie tested it is the people that have looked at all the formulations were to find the best one for you so keep those questions, and it absolutely and did you have anything to add to video shot you on awesome podcast that just aired early this week I was I was on the intermittent fasting podcast with Melanie Avalon and Jim Stevens I think this is the second or third time a bit on their going on the dance anytime I think yes and yet the second time it's great we talk about fasting the lot more than fast we talked about fasting the medic diets we talk about all kinds of different things and I thought it was a great show and shout out to Melanie she's got a new podcast and I would be going on that on the well go one of the 24th I don't know when should you publish it but she's got so she has a hold of the podcast but that was really cool check it out intermittent fasting podcast and you can hear that episode and we talk a little bit more than just fasting it's those are two really smart people very very fun people talked about that's awesome I did want to bring something up to you I was reading a blog article from Chris Kuester here recently in a reminded me somebody member a little over a year ago there was this new message was being pushed out talking about sitting is the new smoking that's right so never talk about a sedentary lifestyle will if you remember it wasn't that long ago did tell you and I, laugh there's a lot of truth behind what you eat oftentimes you can't necessarily out exercise and what was that someone said you can't outrun the fork you can't outrun the fort that was it that's a shout out to somebody that we do have have in the show at some sometime the name Todd Smith is a bodybuilder trainer out of Omaha Nebraska he'll supplement stores and I heard him say that once like I am still sure what is is a lot of truth to that you know if you want to be healthy a lot of it comes to aware which of your food fuel source is is it healthy for you and what is that translate to so what Kuester was able to illustrate quite well is that if you're sitting for long periods of time throughout the day he can't really out exercise the damage that you're doing by sitting for this law say that again so so and this came in a blog from Chris Chris are who we know well and was your oven is great guy he wrote a blog all about sitting then yes he did any reference to a handful of studies he basically put together he does a great job of always aggregating different things that he's reading pulling great information making easy prey to can I consume but essentially showed that even marathon runners when they're not actively training is another there's other issues that may be going on with marathon running of long-term inflammation exposure anyhow but that aside there actually at more risk according to some of these articles he has and therefore coronary artery disease because of the long periods of times it they're not training and that are not running the marathon site are sedentary and that actually affects their metabolic rate from sitting so then you begin to die little bit deeper looking into sitting while working if you go to in office and you don't engineer of engagement your computer and your having to type for long periods of time you're still sitting obviously you're working you're working hard but possibly examine what would it take for me to get a standing desk or something similar that would give you some variability in fact Robert Hendrickson has a a new a new product that easily come out with rover that we had on from full bucket health that's right after the show he was sure the silver color prototype to have some sort of portable version of that so that you can get away from just sitting all the time you admits it's brilliant anyway it solves a lot of problems of course it gives you a portable office that you want to go but at the same time you now have the availability to not be confined to sitting while taking care of work will essentially what Christer pointed out is sitting for 11 to 13 hours a day and many people may say when I don't do that I get more than that and you may think that but you drive to work and then you put in 6 to 8 hours of sitting you wake up you set out have a cup of coffee and follow up on whatever it is you do you come home drive to work you may work out but that is a matter because they can sit down to eat when you sit frequently and then you sit down to attitude to maybe watch program at home before you go to bed that amount of sedentary non-movement over time as an aggregate the you simply can't out out exercise according to the studies well it's interesting because if you sit for more than six hours it's been shown that your lipoprotein lipase actually goes down and that's what burns fat you can actually have a decrease in your bone mineral density leading to osteoporosis and then ultimately increased coronary events due to high blood pressure and coronary artery disease than when you stop and think about it sitting is not very good. And if you look at how we evolved we really didn't do a whole lot acidic we were always on the move around so let's come up with some ideas right now we want everybody to at least try for the next week to sit there and do the so when you're put a timer on your desk chair or timer on your desk I think about it you can elevate your desk a little bit that there's all kinds of different options out there for you to do it what if you if your teacher if your teacher and you feel like that you are engaging the students on a particular subject maybe change the scenery have a walking meeting don't take the elevator if you can take some stairs what else oh I was just thinking that the first for the whole teaching thing to remember the meeting that we are at in Utah with the bathwater, and one of the moderators before they even began made everybody stand up and shout around guess I just get energy upright just get everybody moving and then that's how she said she starts all her podcast like that she makes her guess do that just to get them up and ready which is really cool so anytime you get up and do that I think that elevating your – we walked Wenatchee had a patient from Veritas the big company that does this trip we walked around my office and looked at different ways different deaths we can do for the employees last of it with this be something you would like and they were all unanimously really interested in that unlike Robo was talking about he thought that would be really difficult the beginning but suddenly he's standing for eight hours doing all his work no big deal at all none at this temperature and it don't you find it days it weaned up having to pound away a lot of computer work compared to the days were doing a lot of scopes are you doing a lot of clinic visits I have more energy after doing all the movement throughout the day than I do when I'm what's up once a month twice a month I just have to kind of pound a lot of work on the computer those of the most draining dates to me in it and I really didn't move I just sitting there panning out on the computer and its signage oil will melt let's just throw one other thing in there so people sit that they sit all day than they come home dad and then they get on their computer the blue light now your jacket up your circadian rhythm and I mean where really try to kill ourselves and like everything that we do in life right now is basically shortening our arches our health time is really what it's doing we have this were doing those other things to try to correct it but these are all easy life hacks that we can do get out wake up one of the greatest depending what time you wake up wake up really early so the sun is out for the greatest things you can do to turn your circadian rhythm is get up go for a walk on an empty stomach with sunlight to convert the vitamin D you turn on your circadian rhythm you're telling your brain were going to do this and it does a couple quick things number one you get your body movement to get out you little sunlight and you not waking up and immediately sitting down which is what a lot of people do and you know what I'm I try to do this I wake up every morning really early and I make my coffee in the French press and I got my little routine habit or routine is pretty important if you like a lot of people like Tony Robbins of the people to say Arnold Schwarzenegger like really highly effective people they'll have a very specific morning routine chair Tim Ferris Joe Rogan all that I will sit there and start regular coffee then work on the charts I took it one step further and I got a vibration plate I tried to stand on it and I should do my truck; unpacking this setting was it turns out it's really hard to do computer work with vision vibrating (32 oscillations per second or whatever so you have noticed in those vibration plates are kinda interesting but if you lock your knees out man at that there really affects model skinny legs I just take the population straight up to my eyeballs I can't hardly see much anything that so just simple access something that will go talk about in the next half-hour is going to be a another hack I was listening to one of the greatest biomarkers of all time Ben Greenfield, he talks about migration place he talks about getting out or talks about the get some sun they were talking about peptides which is really what I wanted to have Max Fairchild on in his you come back on here in a few weeks to talk about peptides and that is another little hat these are all things you can do that aren't that not that difficult to really make a big difference in your life and offset some of the stuff so fierce that they're stuck in traffic or if your sit in your cube: every time you stand up your bosses sitdown or your student teacher says sitdown there's ways to get around it just make sure that when you have it under control you can do all kinds of stuff were going to be talking with Cooper about different ways to engage with nature also data that's another little way to get your brain stimulated to get your circadian rhythm and track and all that definitely ending of these these are things that if you're a member of KB MD health here pretty soon Dr. Brown his mood coming up of the system where we can start putting together some of these small tips that were finding out basically just amassing these studies and how you can take these into practical life managers hearing this morning I work at XYZ I understand it's tough it's up to make a change what we want to do is see if we can help people find easy modifiers to make those changes meaningful to you and a little teaser may be have it delivered straight or maybe have it delivered straight to your home is by building a news coming out about that over the weekend so if you are on KPMG health.com and they are member of KPMG health look this site no later than the Sunday maybe before but probably no later than the Senate would get a really really really cool announcement on something you been working on for well over a year well over a year with some really smart people out there shout out to Mr. Zell of course but there I want to make a difference in my community sure and I think this is a way to do it and I'm really excited to start implementing some leasing's meeting other experts do all kinds of stuff and you would be Sony and if you're not a member of KPMG health aide cost nothing you said to go to KPMG health.com Pan down on the button on the poorly designed website that basically have no about myself and about we are working to prove it we brought in and we have an intern in Internet started this week we have someone who's actually going to help us do stuff thank goodness yes thank goodness that read had to find somebody that's like half our age to do that I am super excited to have someone help us get those things done and he sees already off and running in and helping as the redesign so that will be great speaking which I need to address something you know that the processor is you write yes so several of you and by several I mean a few hundred of you have not have had issues while trying to make purchases through the website on KB MD health and it is truly no fault of ours it's two healthcare people try to run a website but the processor since we do process CBD sales all of the banks collectively have basically come up with new parameters that you have to be vetted and you have to have a right processor they're basically trying to prevent fraud so for every reputable business is about 20 they just aren't there try to weed them out so we're it it's it's inconvenient for us but were were getting through it and I've been kinda forced to handle it in the evening some phone calls from some folks so that we can do some manual transactions not a big deal though and not all bad has come out of it I've met some great people some great supporters some people just have questions knowing you like I could totally see you know it's not bad in fact I'm been invited to several weddings and onto a vacation with whatever whomever they are but I did get interesting call I guess it was three days ago from a Jonah from South Carolina and he's been watching the show because his daughter who lives in Houston found found the gut check projects weight and they been sharing it back and forth they like the episodes well he's now customer of KPD health CBD but he wanted to tell me specifically about what CBD was doing for him and on a moment to full depth on this with you but vagal mediated PVCs that was basically where he was coming from he said that his vagus nerve in his interpretation of it was that over vagal stimulation in even even in that I I'm still trying to wrap my head around it but would elicit PVCs and throw him into a fit and post and say the vagus nerve is a exquisitely complex thing that runs from the brain all the way down so were to have a vagus nerve expert what outpatients that's his work as a PhD he's working at vagus nerve stimulation and what it does and where can go so we can that's good that's a whole separate episode but I love the fact that he called and why do you think the CBD helped him I don't else really good question his his interpretation was that something with the vagus nerve whenever it wasn't performing properly he could have PVCs and throwing himself into a fit but something that he'd found out is that using high quality revocable CBD dose actually prevented him from having a fib episode taken last summer between 812 hours 28. Go in a fit anymore and he had the same experience so far with KB the CBD which I thought was great in a course is anecdotal's are not making a claim but this is what he's found utilizing that he's been in in conversation with his with his cardiologist to talk about that but all that aside I would like to dig in deep with within the course the vagus nerve is it's think that Vegas is Latin for wanderer it's a nerve it is the peer sympathetic nerve is a great regularly because all way down and regulate your gut as well and it's interesting because even in the SEBO form committees and things people really try and make some sense of it they try and figure out how to manipulate the vagus nerve words can bring one of the world's experts on church to do a deep dive real geeky scientific dive into it to make sure that your vagus nerve is hopefully the beauty of CBD it works I can adapt to gents which credit goes where you need yellow you get the faster time goes by that because that's another half hour so episode 14 will be back here after the break with Cooper read in just a moment why have thousands of aspiring authors teamed up with Christian faith publishing to publish their than just exploding because the polyphenols if you find in Alicante what are some of things these polyphenols do affect these polyphenols can help you have more energy and polyphenols are great it sounds like it's good health: more people than just loading go to let my Tommy.com/and we are now back for the second half hour episode 14 gut check project I am now joined on my ride by Mr. Cooper read digital entrepreneur and social engineer Adaline Cooper doing very well guys I'm happy to be here so you're also a maps advocate as well as the fun I'm going to screw the name of Zenda project I volunteer correct absolutely as in the project and maps organization the multidisciplinary Association for psychedelic studies you have an advocate for that can push that but I really am a volunteer present no projects yet what is what is on the project and the project is a project it's underneath the maps organization they set up the arts in music festivals all around the world and again hold space for people that are having difficult psychedelic experiences that have story after story was the reason why want to have you on so bad is because I really do we we've actually interviewed Dennis McKenna who is a godfather in psilocybin there are in my world there are no FDA studies going on with her looking at suicide but for different things and were to jump right into your history as soon as I countertop but we always try doing the shows at least we get through one academic paper to get everybody up to speed at least on something try to teach something so there just yesterday the US news to know the report where it showed that US death rates from suicide alcohol and drug overdose is reached an all-time high so I think there is no better time for somebody like you being involved with the maps to start integrating some of the stuff because were clearly not doing a very good job were committed suicide more often were dying from opioids and all this so what I wanted to get into on the fringe a little bit is something called peptides so I am not an expert in peptides of Max Fairchild is Gabriel aligned Debbie alliances that we were talking about but so I try to teach myself a little bit about this and so I found an article on a peptide called BPC 157 soap BPC 157 is a peptide chain consisting of 15 amino acid so peptides are just very specific amino acid and Ben Granger was talking that when does a peptide become a pro to Mauritania yet and if there's there's really do know the experts on this can say well it gets really weird because growth hormone is still considered a peptide but it's really that it's a really big peptide so that it's just very specific amino acids put together so BPC 157 although it's considered synthetic it's actually a protective protein which is found in the stomach and it's known for its anti-ulcer effects of the known about that for quite a while Dr. Lyons is the one who told me to start using my guest wrote you practice I'd never even heard of it nobody ever talked about that so I'm super excited that I'm now getting into this aspect so researchers are conducted numerous rodent studies that show that it doesn't protect against of protective effects but it also seems to extend beyond the stomach and intestinal tract so BPC 157 has been shown to benefit ulcer healing the stomach intestinal damage such as fistulas and inflammatory disorders but there is some anecdotal evidence to show that bone and joint healing also takes place what I really wanted to get into is in my practice I talked about the brain got access all the time so I found an article researchers out of Croatia have done rodent studies looking at the influences on the brain got access and this actually comes from 2016 and what they did is they looked at DPC 157 and over a very long period of time they tried to show how not only is it protective in the stomach but it is very useful as a peptide in other areas of the body specifically the brain is funny because their thought on this was the first auditing to think about this when we top of the brain got access in the first one actually show that was Pavlov I have lobby and respond Escher fistula in the dog ring a bell here's it turns on the intestines that's a brain gut response yet is so we all have this and so the main thing that BPC 157 does it is a growth like peptide so it turns on genes that increase blood vessel growth and nerve growth since we were taught to draw ever is if you're like me going what BPC 157 turns on blood vessel growth and nerve growth while that's while it has wild so wild so what they did as they looked at a bunch of different well brain mood issues and I specifically looked at these animals and so how does BPC 157 help with this/want to go through in the articles really Berrigan charity coupons along so I try to go through a few things because if you suffer from any one of these but start talking some peptides okay depression they proved that BPC 157 actually acts on the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems as well as the GABA system member a few episodes back we talked about how CBD can directly bind to serotonin right much like an adaptive gent it's almost like this is adapted and also they show that in these animals they induced depression and I don't I really get into how they actually do this with the animals on and off they served with divorce papers nudging winter jobs only or that you like the big firearm then whatever it something you know I can't sit down for too long so actually induced depression measured all these different levels and they showed that serotonin and open dopamine and GABA all came back to normal levels after being injected with interesting 57 okay super well, this will alcohol withdrawal they showed that it actually counteracted acute and chronic withdrawal as well as healing the liver and the G.I. tract that is very interesting but it makes a lot of sense on why people can't escape alcoholism oh one step further opioid withdrawal allow just kept on saying you with death rates from suicides alcohol drug overdose will result in high and what you're going to talk about as some psychedelics have some great promise I'm learning about this for the first time and I'm reading this albeit animal models but it's very hard to get FDA to approve human studies we know that so there has to start with animal models sure it showed that the opioid receptors would be down regulated after getting it so that they didn't have that yearning with her like demanding the opioids that's that's actually really impressive then it gets into disease states multiple sclerosis BPC 157 effectively counteract the development of brain lesions and MS induced mice traumatic brain injury they actually stimulated nerve growth and decreased brain edema after inducing try to bring injury spinal cord injuries it improved rat tail movement after the end because a spinal cord injury so basically this is what I really consider a true life hack if it difficult this can be put over that's what I want to have his peptide experts on so I have not use the personally I've not given it to my patients yet to them just discovering this but when we start combining these different things sure it's a natural immediate well it's a synthetic amino acid sequence but these peptides the really big in the bodybuilding community the really big and antiaging community which sometimes I've always said that I felt like endurance athletes and bodybuilders know more about nutrition than any gastroenterologist they manipulate the body through sure so what we talk about here and you're going to carry the torch now because what we talked about is some pretty cool stuff like we've covered stem cells CBD photo bio modulation these are all easy to implement things that can make a huge difference in your life so I was looking at the star some Facebook groups that are that are really proponents of peptides and I will set a couple emails on that question to have no like right now whenever for Max and just for us to come to think about something that we have the answer specifically from the research that that we have I know before Shire for 157 but what makes it synthetic and is there a is there a natural counterpart that that does that and the other one would be with all of the the advances are the disease states that we talked about would benefit from what about peripheral diabetic neuropathy if you're talking about our generation and blood flow in an angiogenesis or growth of blood vessels and that's that's ultimately what ends up you got get there poor guys got diabetic neuropathy in his feet and he is sitting too close to floor heater and burns off the ends of ends of his toes he can feel it or or starts taking Lyra cover gabapentin or something and you know all those commercials yeah cause depression above the head falls off to me all those things so what makes it synthetic I did I had to look this up on examine.com it's considered a 50 amino acid sequence it's only considered synthetic because the particular sequence has not been extracted be in the exact sequence it's probably believed to be a large one that gets cleaved that works on the side of protective area of the of the stomach so it's only synthetic because they've not been able to actually extract it in the exact same sequence from a human possible that it lives somewhere even if it only for a brief period of time we do seven found in its whole form yet exactly it's like many things that you know you can either I've had this I've had this discussion with different pharmaceutical companies where when you look at that will say oh it doesn't get absorbed with the be like systemic effects in the argument from the pharmaceutical company is owner but when you take our drug you won't see this in the blood in my argument is when you eat a steak yes he stake in the blood yeah right you break down ESU and amino acid complex and that's that's that's one of the things actually happens to do pharmacokinetic studies they say oh take this is it in your blood doesn't get absorbed okay white why my feet swelling wide what are right I heard or whatever you that since the whole prodrug to active component thing you know it's basely taken in this hold this this is and what's going to the action it's when it's broken down or assembled into something else that is in the doing whatever it is yeah totally so BPC 157 were to learn more about it and when we do have a real expert on about that I'm just can eat his brain and just or her right however the expert is not only messy that's just some work I just subscribe for shares are welcome to gut check the project's mess so speaking messes I don't know while that is even a good segue really at all so I think that we should go ahead and not reconnoiter here and go read and reread and reintroduce Cooper Cooper read I like he said he is a digital and social entrepreneur now that you found use your way there in a completely different career path and where we probably may have crossed paths early before didn't but didn't really get to know each other right right absolutely no born here in Texas I was born here in Texas small town grew up in Paradise Texas tiny little you know I know there's a dot for paradise but it's out of nowhere here in North Texas and then now what where did you find yourself after you are you left. I yeah so died I felt paradise when traveling around for you know I get a plate a year of college baseball Texas Boston University in the know then I went in the Denton and got really to the arts after my baseball careers have over from there I decided I wanted to go into performing arts so went to Dallas got a degree performing arts and from there I got opportunity rip Chicago studying commie and no second city in the improv Olympic up there just to show talking about your your life is one of the comedy cards like you to say offensive stuff and just blame it on the company joined the professional comedy Association it's much easier to get into the actors Guild yeah yes I like what if about you to the cards always want to do it whenever I offend anybody absorb what you say yeah right as it I don't mean it this material anyways and from there I became a father and came back to Texas and had to get a real job and quit bartending in and doing comedy stuff on the weekends got into the surgery technology that assert became certified surgical tech and started my career in Denton and then moved to back home in Wise County Decatur Texas and wise region there specializing in euro spines in Branson orthopedics will you that orthopedic so you know he worked with one of our former guess right would that be Dr. Wade McKenna yes Ashley work in Canada several cases it had II have a very just so many fond memories working with that guy he so good so talented what he does in and then his you to ongoing research and education for himself and just what he does is just awesome I'm a big fan Dwight McCann I like to give them a shout out some point and say hello where he says hi you were actually huge fans also when it when he came on the show I thought that was one of the coolest if you have a chance look at that episode whatever number whatever number that stem cell self there is something that you did look at did you ever do it who did you assist him in any stem cells are to do only just do the open cutting stage and open cutting staff you know and then he would get in and then you'd spin the plasmon stuff in and re-administer that no one's closing was done to help with the healing and think that you know like that after he was doing that in the MLR PRP experiments to hear he had his own centrifuging at using one or two dedicated people there they were just there is basically a mini lab and rail are right in the middle of the signing Alec while we were doing the casing I would be spinning that the PRP and separating all that and then at the end of it it was a know what the assist job or whoever was helping in a close up the case they would administer that for a for you know the healing process and regeneration goes on that is really cool why Nancy was into any course she had added to awesome ortho's there have chronic and repair of the asset I spent lots of time working with Dr. Barrow he's these were my favorite surgeons is a great great position and a great guy and generally you know just anyways those guys and in his first assist is her sister Jacob has been with him many many years is one of my best friends and and I super sharp guy and also super fun and really get another college baseball player yeah yeah so it sounds you had a great environment right there did something happen what you dislike said screw this through down the live trocar or whatever it is take off and walked out or what happened so I really I wasn't I wasn't happy or fulfilled after certain amount of time you know I like I said I was in Chicago studying calmly all the stuff and then I was like okay what I get a real job raise a family do that sort of thing so Jacob Mayberry invited me Dino to his okay maybe should come check it now follow Romero and I in the case and see if you want to go get certifies of something you want to do and so I did that audited today with Barrett Ruth Rivero at Bridgeport and then from there is like a family survive and do this for a while and then you know several years ago I know that for five years and I start to just kind of check in with myself and realize that I'm not not happy now at my home life I'm looking back on now might be a little bit of depression you know I had all these great things going on had a good job is in a happy I like the people I was working with but you know there was just I was tired. He didn't have a creative outlet I didn't have that outlet now you did know if you do the performing arts than comedy you've got that brain that needs to constantly be stimulated like that right right and so when in surgery became so monotonous so robotically you know do insane things and you know I I rose up to be no really good you know in the in the spine and euro area and then and even that you know everyone like I'm helping people you know it's fine brains working on that and that's awesome that's exciting I love it but after a while I just knew that I did what I wanted like my heart was call me to like be out and about and go moving shaking and then but as my my health started deteriorating as well with liquid like to the 50 and that the depression and asked her to gain weight and really was the unhappiness with the way in all not really unhappiness with the way but just like the not being fulfilled and being unhappy plus the weight gain had every check in with myself and figure out what was going on there so start taking steps to get healthy so let's look at that what how you think that you ended up becoming unhealthy in that environment because unfortunately we see a lot of people in healthcare and I think there's a lot of reasons for the hours stress the shift work all different cards think so our healthcare providers sometimes are sacrificing themselves without even realizing it to try to help other people how do you think that process happened with you I'd I mean I agree I think that's what it was he knocked the long hours the unit with its physical work here on your feet you know 812 hours a day that's good thing though now that's a great thing to be moving but once you know that the long hours and just being of exertion with the mental exertion as well you know go and the emotional you're working with people you're trying to save lives here you know and so they take their jobs very seriously so mentally physically long hours that will sale that do you say that standing in one spot you leave your working as the technician and you often times especially in difficult case your holding a pose for a very very long time something being articulated something being cut out and you really are sacrificing a lot get you get aches pains etc. you probably absolutely accurate is this holding these Sina you want to move so understand back when I was a med student we had to do that yeah and you like a member universe aggressor redoing a gunshot wound like 2 AM in your hold his retractors and you start getting fatigue start shaken surgeon starts yelling at you like trying yeah three a little bit of sweat and I hope it's not going to fall into the sterile field you know yet is all kind of distress is that going on yet for sure but I think it's so over a long period of time I think that that that weighed a lot on me just with the stress that goes on with the environment and in that and then justly and not not being out and being active is much being indoors so it putting in those hours and you not try and hit on this in the past but what was your interpretation of maybe this is an institution of health that I'm in but make no mistake it's an institution and it absolutely needs an industry what did you think about the hospital industry where you're supposed to be delivering health and then maybe some of the execution of some of that as it is rolled out right and that's where you have met so morally I saw some things but didn't sit well with me being in that industry right. I saw that that said you have the patient the becomes accomplished someone that's there in the middle right and you have for me in a lot of cases you would have the insurance companies now and the doctors going back and forth and becomes more like an a number you know the patient becomes maybe a number of verses like eyelets really care what's going on here rather than like walking into be like okay who's is insurance what you know what the insurance here you know in and so that for me is like it was just a is one of the minor things but as one things got my attention you know that like it's it's not where the healthcare system is for me is like need to be more focused on you know the patient and patient health patient well-being rather than be no worrying about you know needed the money parts in the insurances and I know that out that all plays a very important role in it all for sure but I just cannot seem like there the patient was kinda being put to the wayside in this I now and so that was for me one of the indicators like I don't know if I'd want to stay in this enough for I make a career lie I know that the three or those that you referenced Rivero McKenna and have Blahnik they all were incredible patient advocate I will as I say so is the hard part I see nothing and struggle with it to it's like how can I deliver the service in can you know this a lot of times it's not even can I do this without insurance it's driving have a place to allow this you try to do a charity case here recently in almost got blocked when you're trying to give up your time and that kind of stuff gets in the way when you're like look I'm just trying to provide a service who needs it we get others who are able to basically start so yeah unfortunately it's super complex absolutely we have developed a system that is an organism that feeds on itself we have developed a system where will I crisscross or talk about all the time yeah we are trying to fix the end organ thing and trying to and then people have figured out how to make a profit on it right I remember listening to Peter Addie a talk one time or he's use a party thoracic surgeon I think is he really felt like he was at the bottom of the hospital and people were lobbing eggs yes try to catch the eggs like when we quit throwing the eggs out the window that and that's kinda what you're getting at where your mind I can see that you are very in tune to your feelings nature and everything and that's really cool that you took a step back and with wait a minute this is not for me write Dr. Bill to solve it so sure not to go to hospital ministration politics and arrive the eye that I was working I was editing blogs for a guy who's really in the sustainability name Rob Greenfield and when I was working with him I was like man how to weep back I would love to try to take on the medical industry and just the waste that they produce the thing I so I'd like to have the ambition again if I like how can this happen but then again you know it's such a he there so many things are going on with it but the act is something that I can't solve I took a step back and said well this I would I would love I know it's going on but I'm texted back and what's best for me and so that led to me I did take one last hurrah as a travel surgical tech when travel took some contracts the United States Tennessee, where my mind was on that oh it's not just wise Kelly not just a problem yeah yeah was there it was there a strong proverbial straw that, I was like you know what this is this the part that is nonnegotiable for me or was it just counted everything together kind of at EL it is all Elkanah came together and it was where I was in life any of these can I felt like a time to move on the I love the people I work with and and you know I was I enjoyed my time doing that but at same time as I was I was ready for more I want to be fulfilled I wanted to I need a challenge I need a challenge titled how old is your son of the sun so I have a daughter daughter she's eight right now so back didn't see you whenever I stopped all this you know she was 56 yeah yeah yeah really and so I imagine that you you left there for much more lucrative investment banking type thing yes so quite the opposite so what I did is I think a little money I did have and I purchased a school bus and herded into the camper and then spent the rest of money on Christmas gifts for the family that year in then yeah converted a school bus into a camper and went roaming around in the mountains of New Mexico and Libya Colorado and no plan really other than I wanted to get in the travel like I'm like now the time to do it I want to figure out a way to make a living no traveling so what do I do I get the school bus converted numb site I start inviting people on these adventures of the mountain second as I get a venture you know pay for gas give me a lecture and not show you great time have connections in New Mexico and Colorado and you know various other places in Texas so that was my first kind of entrepreneurial thing how people find social media yet is utilizing social media I started I became part of this group called superhero Academy I can find them superhero Kennedy.net or anywhere online and get a really good thing going on start learning about social entre nous or ship just how to utilize Facebook and Instagram and YouTube to make a living right to to purchase about their the brand yourself right so this is back in 2015 or so that I started the 2015 716 anyway so far I started that's how I started back the tyro knew like that's that's where I was posting this with my close community friends and family on Facebook and now this were my first few customers came from and went from there to a long bus or short bios have a short bus it was like when it was an old law wasn't it was a 1998 Thomas and it was more the shorter versions wasn't a long one but it was necessary like a short bus I was like one of those admitted weird big block at tween area as I get a big and blocky and now but it only had like 67,000 miles and was a diesel when I bought it from a kid that was moving down to Texas A&M and had it for his buddies to go fishing in and paid 4300 bucks for it and I was like this is a little nugget of gold right here that she sounds pretty awesome like it like your first year just ended up being like serial murderers are you by your Jason is a guy yeah my trash back to him he probably would've lightened up on my trip that we had a good time and that's what it was about that was about getting out and finding yourself in exploring and being out nature and also just the travel experience in the cognitive effects it does have on the mind and just in and just how healthy it I think it I think a lot of our health starts at are in our minor thought process in her brain so that's what I wanted to show people hate get out do what you love but also here's a healthy way to do it by getting outside and pushing yourself challenge yourself let's go skiing let's go snowboarding go kayaking you know let's go hiking up in the mountains so that's really cool that's actually the stuff you do it was a bit was like an adventure bus it was an adventure bus yeah and that's what it was absolutely Jerry problems with that that 98 diesel in the in the cold ever fired up yeah I mean to mean no serious problems there was a couple mornings are there were a couple mornings where if you select slow start but even use a fire right up and this thing was a beast it was it just ran and ran and ran and I think part of it is because it had low mileage and he was just kinda getting broken and you know like a decent run forever and ever and it is getting broken in but now it fired right up in the mountains that is the exact opposite of the job that you are doing is a surgical tech maps act opposite yeah that is a bit just real quick before we have 30 seconds to break but okay did you feel that the moment you began to engage with people on a personal level that suddenly now you're starting to feel an elevated mood versus always seen patients are asleep absolutely absolutely that was my favorite part of actually being in the surgery is like you know commuting with those patients before they were when it went under and in yes when I moved into and started talking people one on one that was where I really start to thrive wherever this Latin is half-hour ending in that joint to begin for the next hour but will be back in just a moment and that's not where his story stop seated at mobile I have yours wrapped that truth that I just liked how what what points are you going to maps.org the new sailor cited writes music would you like to put all some of Everett is leading yeah you do it on the right some crazy. So hey we we left off last half-hour you are talking about that the bus you have any you have any experience in the busted may be didn't go exactly as planned yeah I had a couple know the one that sticks out the most though as we are in Taos New Mexico and it had been yet sounds what now love town elements my favorite so we were but we'd been there for about a week or so was with my brother and my friend Amy Shane we were descending at time of the mountain some other friends were over in Angelfire so we like minute but then down the mountains and it is time to go home and we came in on this like really sketchy like mountain trail it wears like I was I had been there several times and came in like the normal way but for whatever reason the GPS Lake was late go this direction and I like and save you yeah and I was like okay cool working to go this way in the back way in and so naturally like when we left like there was a hit there had been snow in and you know the temperatures drop to about to zero while we are there so we're heading out like go back that direction and see what happens and it was not a good choice we got up I was going uphill on these frozen Rosie on this is Charles all dirt you know this is just rocks and dirt and I might die and you and you a sketchy going up on Mike you know what I was gonna go with it and see what happens and no okay now we start sliding me know and I can't get it under control wind up I am trying to press the brakes at one point words, this incline gives airlines on this bus it and I don't even know honestly have no idea. It really cold yet you know we are just sliding and back back back back you know we cannot almost scan were going off of the mountain side a little bit was like a steep drop off but it would been something I could not of gotten out of so I tried to like steer it back in it just as I was sliding backwards or turn the wheel I turned the wheel and got it like just perpendicular with the road and try to pull out but even even turning in trying to get out of it is made the situation even more and I going into the bank of the road saying on the bus and everyone well after a lot of silence strays silence a lot of you like any nobody has a lot to home of the engine going and being out everyone just quiet like what like why did you take us this nightly understanding about adventure but I like this is not for us and he only is my brother is just back there shaking his head like I don't know how to get out of this is like I understand you got insured for the show exactly know this is go anyway so we go to the bank in the nose of the bus is stuck into the side of the road in the snow and all that so we had to get Dick to the city officials or the Rangers I think that the park ranger showed up in his big old snowplow monster truck looking thing comes out in the tie chain on and yank us out and get us going back the opposite direction back to the safe road is a trail used to make she made down yeah yeah they did they did because the rest of luckily I was like downhill so it is an easy cruise down but but that was a sketchy moment because like we are most went off the mountain backside and we crashed into the bank on the outside so so when you are following this snowcapped thing didn't have a bumper sticker that said if you can read this. It arises you know that I don't know if Manny was like I want to try to go at it that that's not I would not do I would only like Joe will like Mossad I totally admire you from doing that and I think that is what so cool you left this career you jumped in both feet and you start pushing your boundaries exactly inc

For a full list of prayers available through this podcast and our website, please follow this link: https://psalm71.podbean.com/e/full-list-of-available-prayers-1513057365/ NOTE: This prayer has been recorded TWICE, first for listening and agreeing, then again for repeating. 2 Chronicles 20 serves as the template for this prayer of warfare against the seemingly overwhelming powers of the enemies of God and His Church. The original scriptural text is of itself a powerful confirmation of the purposes and integrity of God, who will always intervene to safeguard the inheritance of His Son. As we are the very members of the Body of Christ, and God is our Father, it is our need and duty to call upon the Lord to protect us against the enemy's firepower. Listen to the original text here: https://psalm71.podbean.com/e/spiritual-warfare-scripture-the-prayer-of-jehoshaphat-and-the-lords-answer-2-chronicles-20/ The expansion and focus here, of the original psalm language, is intended as a representative example of praying by using the scriptures as a framework for our immediate need. The text of the scripture is in lower-case type, while all additions (and modernized language) are included in upper-case type, below. HEAVENLY FATHER, WE ACKNOWLEDGE AND CONFESS OUR SINS AND ASK FORGIVENESS AND WASHING IN THE BLOOD OF JESUS. WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO HAVE CURSED US AND USED ALL MANNER OF WITCHCRAFT AGAINST US, FOR WE DO NOT KNOW WHOM YOU MAY YET HAVE CHOSEN FOR SALVATION IN JESUS CHRIST. LORD, WE PRAY THAT YOU WILL SAVE THOSE WHO ARE AT THIS TIME CAPTIVE TO THE DEVIL'S WILL. TURN TO YOUR GOOD PURPOSES WHAT THE DEVIL HAS MEANT FOR EVIL, AND TURN TO YOUR GLORY AND PRAISE WHAT THE DEVIL HAS MEANT FOR ACCUSATION AND BLASPHEMY. O Lord God of our fathers, AND OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST, ARE YOU not God in heaven? FOR WE KNOW, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOLD US, THAT YOU ARE GOD, THAT YOU ARE IN HEAVEN, AND THAT YOUR NAME IS HOLY. DO YOU not RULE over all the kingdoms of the EARTH? and in YOUR hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand YOU? FOR WE KNOW, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOLD US, THAT YOU DO RULE OVER ALL, AND THAT THERE IS NO POWER OR MIGHT BUT YOURS, AND THAT NO MAN, OR WOMAN, OR RULER, WHOEVER THEY MAY BE, GREAT OR SMALL, IS ABLE TO WITHSTAND YOU. O LORD, ARE YOU not our God, who CREATED ALL THINGS ACCORDING TO YOUR OWN WILL AND PURPOSE? WHO HAS WAGED WAR, AND PREVAILED OVER ALL HIS ENEMIES, SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD? WHO HAS DESTROYED THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL AND EXPELLED HIM FROM HIS STRONGHOLDS? FOR WE KNOW, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOLD US, THAT YOU ARE OUR GOD, THAT YOU ARE VICTORIOUS IN ALL VICTORY. WE KNOW, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOLD US, THAT YOU HAVE MADE US YOUR CHURCH AND THE DWELLING PLACE OF YOUR PRESENCE, IN OUR MIDST AND IN THE EARTH. O LORD, DID YOU NOT drive out the inhabitants of THE land OF CANAAN before YOUR people Israel, and DID YOU NOT GIVE it to the seed of Abraham YOUR friend forever? O LORD OUR GOD, HAVE YOU NOT GIVEN UNTO US THIS INHERITANCE, THAT WE HAVE BECOME YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS, THAT NO WEAPON THAT IS FORMED AGAINST US SHALL PROSPER, THAT WE SHOULD CONDEMN EVERY TONGUE THAT RISES AGAINST US WITH THE FALSE JUDGMENTS OF THE EVIL ONE? AND HAVE YOU NOT GIVEN THIS WORLD TO BE THE INHERITANCE OF THOSE WHO LOVE YOU IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH? LORD JESUS, THE LORD'S CHRIST, HAVE YOU NOT SAID THAT WHATEVER WE ASK OF THE FATHER IN YOUR NAME, IF IT BE HIS WILL, IT SHALL BE GIVEN TO US? IS IT NOT WRITTEN IN YOUR WORD THAT, when evil COMES upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, and WE cry unto YOU in our affliction, then YOU WILL hear and help US? And now, O LORD, behold, the children of THE DEVIL, whom YOU, IN YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS AND LOVING KINDNESS, HAVE NOT YET CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE; Behold, I say, how they reward YOUR CHURCH FOR OUR PRAYERS ON THEIR BEHALF, AND FOR SPEAKING YOUR WORD IN YOUR NAME, AND FOR REJECTING THE LIES OF THE DEVIL. LOOK, AND SEE, O LORD, HOW THEY HAVE come to cast us out of YOUR possession, which YOU HAVE given us to inherit. O our God, WILL YOU not judge them? HEAR US, LORD! HELP US, LORD! JUDGE THEM, O RIGHTEOUS GOD! FOR WE ARE SORELY AFFLICTED, for we have no might OF OUR OWN against this great company that COMES against us WITH DEFILED FOOD, WITH SCHEMES AND WEAPONS OF TECHNOLOGICAL MANIPULATION, WITH ECONOMIC WARFARE, WITH ENVIRONMENTAL HAVOC, WITH POLITICAL VIOLENCE AND FRAUD, AND ABOVE ALL, WITH BLOODY HANDS GRASPING TO TAKE OUR CHILDREN AND DESTROY THEIR HEARTS, MINDS, AND SOULS; O LORD OUR GOD, WE HAVE ONLY OUR HOPE IN YOU, neither DO we KNOW what to do OR HOW TO FIGHT SO GREAT A MULTITUDE OF EVIL; but our eyes are upon YOU, OUR HOPE IS IN YOU, OUR EARS ARE OPEN TO YOUR WORD, AND OUR HEARTS ARE WAITING FOR THE STRENGTH OF YOUR HOLY SPIRIT AND YOUR MIGHTY ARM. AND NOW WE KNOW, O LORD, WE KNOW, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOLD US, THAT WE NEED NOT BE afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude OF WICKED MEN AND WOMEN; for the battle is not OURS, but God's. WE KNOW, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOLD US, THAT WE WILL SEE see the salvation of the Lord with US. YOU HAVE COMMANDED US TO go out against them: for YOU, the Lord, will be with US. TEACH OUR HANDS TO WAR AND OUR FINGERS TO FIGHT, WIELDING THE SWORD OF YOUR SPIRIT. WASH AWAY OUR SINS IN THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB AND COVER US WITH THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF JESUS CHRIST. SHINE THE LIGHT OF YOUR COUNTENANCE UPON US AND THROUGH US SO THAT ALL WILL KNOW THAT WE BELONG TO YOU. LET ALL THE EARTH HEAR THE TESTIMONY OF THE GOSPEL OF OUR SALVATION IN JESUS CHRIST. SEND THE HOLY SPIRIT TO QUICKEN YOUR WORD IN US AND EXPOSE AND DESTROY EVERY LIE OF THE DEVIL THAT IS SENT AGAINST US. GIVE TO US A STRONG SHIELD OF FAITH, FOR YOU ARE THE AUTHOR AND FINISHER OF OUR FAITH, AND YOU, O LORD, HAVE COMMANDED OUR STRENGTH. STRENGTHEN THAT WHICH YOU HAVE WROUGHT IN US. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY IS THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, WHICH IS, AND WAS, AND IS TO COME. HIS MERCY MOUNTS UNTO THE HEAVENS, HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER. THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH ARE FULL OF YOUR GLORY. HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST, HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID. BLESSED IS HE THAT COMES, IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, TO JUDGE THE LIVING AND THE DEAD. WE HAVE NO HOPE BUT YOU, O LORD. OUR EYES ARE UPON YOU, O GOD. COMMAND DELIVERANCES FOR YOUR PEOPLE, IN THE ALMIGHTY NAME OF JESUS CHRIST YOUR SON, WHO IS OUR KING AND OUR BROTHER, AND OUR FRIEND. AMEN.

In the 15th episode, Lance and Nicole welcome guest John Paul Rice, film producer from A Child’s Voice. They discuss the opening of a fire station with a police car bay, NCMEC and an ice breaker quiz on film. Nicole reports on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The Red X Podcast is produced and co-hosted by Lance Olive, the mayor of Apex, NC. Nicole Bernard is the host and director of the anti-human trafficking organization, Shield North Carolina. Lance talks about attending the opening of Public Safety Station #5 where the police and fire department are jointly housed. The launch event involved a variety of activities for the children where they got to pretend to put out a fire. Lance had to haul a 170-pound dummy to safety and it was no joke! Having police and fire departments jointly housed reminds the hosts of previous guest, Colleen Merced who is the director of a child advocacy center in which all the services are hubbed in one physical location to streamline victim care. Nicole and Lance also worked with the police recently for “Apex Freedom Week”, for which Lance wrote a proclamation for a week of human trafficking awareness. The week kicked off with Lance reading the proclamation in front of the police department with the chief and other first responders. The week also included Nicole and Shield NC handing out cards with signs of trafficking and ways to respond at a town-wide event, a presentation on internet crimes against children by a local detective and DOJ rep, and panel discussion of the documentary, Resilience. The film has started a movement for people to better respond to adverse childhood experiences (ACE’s) and the effects of childhood trauma. NCMEC, or the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is the main agency that works to find missing children. You might have seen flyers or social media photos with age progressed pictures of missing children. Likely those originated with NCMEC, which works with more than 270 corporate photo partners to disseminate information of a missing child to millions of people across the US. NCMEC reports that the most frequently reported cases involve runaway youth, abductions by a family member or lost, injured or otherwise missing children. Stranger abductions are the least likely cause of a child going missing. Since 2014, states have been required to report missing foster children to NCMEC, whereas previously this very vulnerable population with high rates of runaway youth were not mandated to be reported. In the first 48 hours of running away, 20% of youth will be trafficked. In 2017, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children responded to more than 10,000 potential cases of sex trafficking. NCMEC also tracks online enticement of children, a form of child exploitation including sextortion. Sextortion involves a child being groomed on an online platform to send sexually explicit images, meet someone in person for sexual purposes, engage in sexual conversation or to sell or trade sexual images. This could be accomplished by a variety of methods including a predator pretending to be younger, offering money for images, or luring a child by first discussing shared interest. So far, NCMEC has been able to identify more than 13,000 children from images. Lance asks Nicole and guest, John Paul Rice some icebreaker questions about film. Which Is not recognized as a top 10 American Film Institute genre: Fantasy Sports Romance Gangster In the 1941 Disney film, Dumbo, who is the voice of Dumbo? a) no one b) Gene Harlow c) Noreen Gammill d) no one knows because there were no credits A gaffer is on a film set and they deal with electrical requirements. Why are they called a gaffer? a) in the early days of film, light bulbs would “gaff” b) old English theaters, crews would use long poles called “gaffs” to tend the lights c) film crews used to trip on the wires that went to the lights and cause “gaffs” or bloopers d) the first director to shoot with electrical lighting was called “gaffer” in high school John Paul Rice’s background was in sports and theater. He grew up in Georgia and attended Georgia State. In his second year in school, one of the electives was the history of motion cinema. That instructor had an acting class and it got his creative juices flowing. There was a new film starring Denzel Washington coming to the area (Remember the Titans). John Paul auditioned and made the part of one the team players. He worked on the movie for 2 months working around Denzel Washington. It was 14 hours a day for two months and John Paul realized that he loved it. He then started doing commercials and other small acting roles in Atlanta but then moved to LA to pursue a career in film. He had the opportunity to learn under Joseph Drake, the producer of Hunger Games, Juno, and The Strangersto name a few. After four years of mentorship under Drake, John Paul realized that his skill set was in producing rather than acting. He then teamed up with Edgar Michael Bravo to make 6 films over last decade. While in LA, the two met a girl working out of a motel who would do any fantasy anyone would want as long as there was no sex, no nudity and no kissing. There was a tragic side to her to story that they wanted to capture in the film they made about her called One Hour Fantasy Girlthat became a massive hit online. John Paul wanted to do something that was different than the normal Hollywood film. His hope is that his films are a call to action for social justice issues. As opposed to watching a documentary, a narrative through a genre such as a supernatural thriller as in A Child’s Voice, helps get to the emotional heart of an issue. You don’t have to know anything about the issue before sitting down to watch. You’re drawn in through the characters’ journey. You get emotionally involved. In A Child’s Voice, both a young boy and girl are marginalized and then they are brought together. The narrative evolves through a core message of love. The film makes for a richer story because it humanizes both the perpetrators and the victims and shows the complexity of people. The message of the movie is to say: what would you do? It’s a different type of disclosure and a unique angle that allows viewer to become emotionally involved. Sometimes people are willing to “go there” in a different kind of genre and explore the emotion of an issue rather than respond to a presentation of facts. Art is a great way to get to the heart of social justice issues. When Edgar and John Paul started looking at human trafficking, they realized that lot of the evil’s root is child abuse. But in the face of unconscionable horror, they realized that people still desire to be loved and find that love in another human being. If we are ever to solve these problems, we need a rise in consciousness. John Paul says that we are incredible beings that have the power to overcome and that every bit of love given to a child is like a deposit of gold for every single child’s future. We have an obligation to alleviate suffering and cannot turn away from these horrors. It’s not a crime that can be arrested away. In order to break the cycle, we must be a steady, trustworthy and consistent adult for children. Science agrees. The best predictor of resilience from trauma is having one adult who is able to be that positive, consistent influence in a child’s life. The Red X’s previous guest, Allisonwas able to find restoration from her trafficking when one family started walking along her recovery with her. John Paul’s friend was going to pursue another degree when she had the realization that if she was going to spend so much time being angry about child abuse then she might as well put that time into helping. She then became a social worker. On her first day as a social worker, she met a 2 year old little girl that had been in the house when there was a murder. She took her out for a day together and then later watched a movie during which the little girl fell asleep in her arms. That’s the missing piece. To have the feeling in your body that you are with someone who you can trust and to remember that peace. Abuse and trauma can be the root of victims as well as perpetrators and the root cause is what we have to eliminate. Protecting a child is something that can bring everyone together. A Child’s Voice was probably the fastest they’ve ever made a film. It was all put together in about 2 months. It all began with a solid the script and the belief in it. You have this feeling and trajectory, you are aware of your intent of making a film and what you are trying to say. As a producer, its your personal belief in the film that you are putting out there. There are a lot of casting sessions and going through actors’ headshots and resumes. It’s a subjective process. It’s what do you feel when you are looking at them. All of John Paul’s films are low budget, under $200,000. It’s important to find people who are passionate about the message and then they put their art into it. The script is the foundation, everyone else brings something to it. This was the best produced film because everyone had a heart for this issue. John Paul does not enjoy the technical side as much as he does the art. He’s in charge of everything from working with the colorist to the musician. Sound business does not make art. Sound art makes sound business. Investors are investing in your belief and your ability to get the job done. John Paul’s advice to anyone who would like to make film is that you might not become the subject matter expert, but explore as much as you can. Look at what actually makes you tick. How do you relate through your emotions? You won’t create something that will speak to everyone necessarily, but the goal is to create empathy which allows us to feel for someone else. Those truths that come out will heal a lot of other people. The ultimate goal was to do a movie that would be a call to action. John Paul says to call your legislators but Instead of asking them to solve the problem, ask legislators how you can start working on this with them to end human trafficking. If you are going to fight evil, find other people who feel a certain urgency to save these kids. Support as many businesses as you can who are working to end trafficking. One example is AAHOA, the Asian American Hotels Owner Associations. One of their top 5 initiatives is to end human trafficking in their hotels. They get everyone from managers to janitorial staff trained to recognize and respond to trafficking. If anyone wants to see the film, it’s on Amazon. If you have Amazon Prime, you can download it for free. It’s also accessible on vimeo and available to rent. Please share it with as many people as you can. Check out this week's episode transcription here: Hey everyone, welcome back to another episode of JRCtv. If you’re listening to the podcast or watching this video, Hello. We have a very special guest joining us, I just finished listening to his book which is awesome, if you’re watching it’s called NEVER SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE, you can see it right over his shoulders there which is awesome, this is Mr. Chris Voss, he’s the CEO and founder of The Black Swan LTD Group or The Black Swan Group is the better way to say it. His 24 years experience in the FBI and was former FBI lead international kidnapping negotiator, he’s a speaker which I’ll tell you where we first run into each other as well as adjunct professor and consultant. I believe you’re a professor at Harvard and also USC? CV: “Well I did, Harvard several years ago but these days, USC University of Southern California for all you people in the Southeast and Georgetown University in Washington, DC.” JR: “Wonderful! Well thank you for joining us and thank you for sharing some of your wisdom and experience with everyone today in advance.” CV: “Hey man, I am flattered, I am honored to be on with you. It’s very cool, I am glad we crossed paths again.” JR: “Yeah I am excited, speaking of which the first time we cross paths, I believe was in Philly.” CV: “It was in Philly, yeah in an event Carolyn put on.” JR: “Yeah and we were both speaking there and we had I think it was a 4-hour conversation that night, hanging out, talking with everybody.” CV: “yeah it was a lot of fun.” JR: “I don’t know and I apologize, I don’t know why it took me so long to read your book.” CV: “It took me a while to get the book out so that’s okay.” JR: “Fair enough, fair enough I finally got my hands on it, I went through the whole book, and I mean I wish I can just hit instant download and put this in everybody’s playbook except for the people we negotiate with because obviously, it’s a little better for us to know it than them. About one thing you said that’s really interesting is in the negotiation itself, we’ll get to some tactics but I wanna share about you first, but in the negotiation itself it’s not you versus them as much as it’s you both trying to solve the problem at hand and I think a lot of people including myself when stuff gets tense when stuff gets interesting a lot of times that initial you know adversary thought process comes out. So I want to talk about that maybe towards the end we’ll talk about how to make that adjustment for people but for right now, I’d love to just tell about you, like how did you get into this for those listening and watching.” CV: “Yeah you know just one thing after another out of left field. Which I think you know everybody’s life as it takes its path. I never planned of being an FBI agent probably didn’t even think about it until about 10 or 11 months before I was looking at to become an FBI agent and then like I was a SWAT guy, you know before I went to the FBI I was a police officer at Kansas City Missouri Police Department. Very good police department, wonderful charming, wonderful city. And then the FBI thing comes up, I head in that direction, I was on a SWAT team, to me some of the best things that have happened to me in my life as a result of something it would be perceived as negative and so I reinjured my knee. I tore ligaments in my knee because when I was in college I fancied myself as sort of the Caucasian Bruce Lee (laughs). I wanted to be in the martial arts and I thought that would help me with the police department, blew the knee out. Blew it out again trying out for the FBI’s hostage rescue team, the FBI’s version of the navy seal. A bunch of the HRT guys are former seals, former delta guys and then before I wanted to completely destroy my knee I started looking at something else within crisis response, FBI and hostage negotiator and I thought, how hard can it be? (laughs) JR: (laughs) “interesting mindset to come in with.” CV: “ I can talk to terrorist, I mean I really thought I can do that and initially they wouldn’t let me in. Woman running the team in New York, Amy Bondoro she was like, she kinda look down her nose at me because I didn’t have any qualifications other than wanting to get after which you know anything in life is ingenuity, initiative is one of the biggest things and so she kinda tested me I didn’t realize it was a test at that time, she gave me a test to go out and do.. JR: Was that the lady who had you join the crisis hotline? CV: “Yeah, I go volunteer on the hotline, you know and so then, the process of doing that, trying to get, I got on a team, we had a kidnapping that didn’t turn out the way we expect it to internationally, you know I’m gonna talk about it in the book and then had figuratively get better and that’s when I ended up collaborating with the guys at Harvard. It were lot of fun, I really enjoyed working with those guys, Bob Manoukian, Shiela Heen, Doug Stone, you know just a whole crew of really smart people group up there and they said , hey you know you’re doing the same stuff as we are you just do it with different stakes , you know it kinda open the door to business stuff and you know, Never Split the Difference, you know the book came out last May and if I can add, my co-writer Tahl Raz, freaking genius like anybody out there read anything Tahl Raz has written, if you’re interested in reading something about business, he’s also a co-author of another book Never Eat Alone which is also one the best networking books ever written. JR: “Keith Rosen, he’s been a guest on the show as well, also people love him.” CV : Keith is also phenomenal, and Tahl collaborated on Keith’s book, yeah I mean read anything Tahl’s written, it’s good stuff.” JR: “Fair and cool, I have to look ‘em up. Keith’s business books. So you went through this journey and there were different things you talked about in the book, that I mean literally your heart skips a beat every time you don’t know every time it’s like a page turner, what happened? Did he get him did he not? Did they take him out? And I think it’s always interesting and fun that you know a lot of conversation start with “3 mins, give me a car or the person dies” (laughs) and for most people if you’re watching, you’re a business owner , a coach or someone who a lot of times it’s not a life or death on the line as much as it’s an opportunity to close some type of gap though and that continuously overtime can lead up to the life or death of your company if you think of it that way coz really truly if you overpay or undercharge too many times in a row you’ll end up , your margin’s gone and if your margin’s gone and then you go into the red now you had a business and that stat show that 98% of businesses fail within 10 years , 95% fail within the first 5 years so this literally could be a life of death topic for lot of small business owners if you’re in that first five-year or ten-year period of your business and so looking at it with that perspective maybe, I’d love to share this a couple of tips obviously they’re going to grab the book to deepen this concept but I’d love to share a few tips for people watching , what some things, there might be an easy, applicable , easy something to apply almost immediately that if they watch this they took it away let me see if this really works, like I know he saved people’s lives, I know he’s rescued hostages and some have gone , one or two have gone wrong but most have gone in the right direction and like you said never split the difference and negotiate like your life depends on it because in this cases people’s lives do depend on it, so if they’re gonna take something with that kind of urgency into a business negotiation later this afternoon, what’s a couple of tips you might give them of something they could try immediately just to see that it works before they could have the chance to go to the book and really read all the meat in there?” CV: “Well you know first one is starting point is there’s great power in deference. So you take a deferential approach and then gives you license to set a lot of more things and the book starts with a story of the best way to say no! and people either get this right away and start making money out of it immediately or it scares them. But the first and best way to say no in a deferential tone of voice is; ‘How am I supposed to do that and that?’ is, I got examples for the other side immediately cutting their price by half from a woman who is negotiating with a 13 yr old son who wanted her to buy him a video game and she said to her kid, “How am I supposed to do that?” and he immediately offered to pay for half (laughs) and then I got another colleague here in town business person negotiating with a vendor over contract and he said to the guy “How am I supposed to do that?” and the vendor immediately cut his price by half , so I mean even that in it of itself you know and some people like “Ah, I can’t say that, what if they come back, you have to, now I’m in trouble” and you know my advice to them is “Alright so, give it a try”. Number 1, we actually coach people to say how I am supposed to do that continuously at least two or three times until the other side finally does say “You know because you have to”. Because actually, your job as a business person is to be able to find out how much is on the table and when the other side says coz you have to you now have done your job on behalf of yourself, on behalf of your company. You push the other side to the limit find out everything is on the table and you’re still talking. When somebody says to you, because you have to, you still engage into conversation, it’s not over. They didn’t slam their hands down, jump up and walk away, and didn’t call you names and didn’t threaten to report you to the better business bureau, they’ve said, hey look you pushed me to my limit and I’m still talking. I still wanna make this deal but you know now we’re gonna make the deal. Which is your job as a business person, so you know that little thing right there, that little one more people have instantly made more deals just with that phrase.” JR: “And so, here’s this interesting question coz I’ve been playing this myself, that would be on the point where someone’s purchasing from you and they’re trying to bid you down, correct?” CV: “Well in any time that you have to say no , or that you need to , you need to buy yourself some time it’s actually specifically designed thing, it’s also triggers something we called forced empathy and it’s the best way to get the other side take a look at you, to take a fair look at your position and before they respond, it’s a stop and think moment for the other side. It triggers something that Danny Conoman, Nobel Prize-winning behavioral economist refers to slow thinking which is deep thinking, Conoman wrote a great book called, Thinking Fast and Slow . And his stuff is a foundation that explains a lot of what makes a hostage negotiation work business and personal life cause Conoman talked and goes into great depth about how we react in fact in a real world as opposed to theoretically you know this intellectual mythology which you know doesn’t exist.” JR: “Right, the staircase thoughts came afterward, you know I should have said this!, I should have said that!, I would have done this! and that’s not reality of what actually happened (laughs)” CV: (laughs) “Yeah sometimes I wish I was as brilliant as I thought I was.” JR: "Yeah when you’re walking away , 10 mins later you’re like ahhh all the good thoughts rain in, but there’s things that you’re saying have to happen in the moment, so here’s my question, anytime you have to say no that would help, and this is something that just got me thinking as I was reading through the book , I was reading all this different pieces from ways you can adjust you know yourself, ways you can better understand the person you’re communicating with , there’s so many golden nuggets and great tips on this pages." CV: “Thank you JR: "I hope you don’t mind me bragging about how awesome the book is , really is.." CV: No, no, go on go on JR: “Stop, stop go go . It was interesting, one thing that sit on my head and I love your insight what if you’re trying to nudge the person higher, so and I was trying to figure out which technique might work in that case where let’s say, someone tries to bid us down so we say “ oh that product or that service let’s just use round numbers is $10,000 and they say the best I can do is five, so would you start on that same price ? So how am I supposed to do that?” CV: "Yeah, how am I supposed to do that? You know there’s three or four different ways to approach that , you know another thing you could say to somebody is you know one of the skills we took to hostage negotiations we use this as probably the most powerful one is this tool we call the label , you know hostage negotiations was called the motion labels so the other thing I might wanna say to someone is it “You know it sounds like the values is not there for you.” Now that’s actually a specifically designed price and it’s not what some people are taught to say where they go like “what I’m hearing is” because if I say to you it sounds like or seems like or it looks like, the design of that is actually it hits the portion of your brain that causes you to make an internal inquiry where the prefrontal cortex or the CEO of your brain sort of checks with the rest of the brain and says, “hmmmm”. It causes you to contemplate this in a very specific way, creates this interaction in the different components of your brain where you think about it you actually react in a way that I know in advance you’re going to react to and then you come back with an answer that’s much more than yes or no because no negotiation is the proper answer is never a yes or no, it’s no and or yes and and you need everything else that comes back in the and.” JR: “That’s right.” CV: "Most people, thank you very much, most people when they say the price is the problem, it’s not really the money, it’s what they’re getting for the money and they will give you all the money that you needed, if they’re getting what they needed out of the deal. So if they express to you because they don’t know any better the price is too high and it’s not the price but it’s the package you’re not gonna solve the problem by cutting the price. You may actually make things worse. And you need to get when you say “It sounds like the value is not there for you.” that immediately turns the conversation over the value and it makes him think alright, so what is the value here for me and it pivots now into something other than price wherein you find out how to fix the problem." JR: “Ahh so all of a sudden they’ll open dialogue and ideally, they’ll start sharing with you and either go, oh no no no its not that, it’s not that. Which means they do see the value and there are some other reasons why they’re saying thisA and then you can figure out what the real reason is or they might go, you know, you’re right and I’m guessing a follow up might be we’ll what’s missing or what value needs to be there to be that justified price for what we charge and at that point, either one way you’re gonna learn why they ‘re really saying no to that or two you’re gonna learn what else you need to add to deal with to get it to that price where they easily go that’s totally worth it, let’s do it. CV: "Right, right right exactly and you know there are entrepreneurs , business person’s dilemma , the sales person’s dilemma is everybody’s first move is to cut the price and everybody also knows that it’s probably not price that’s the problem you know the hard part is how do you pivot away from price and get right into what exactly is the problem and so one of the ways is …first way is, of course, say, “how am I supposed to do that ?” Which Is really really a nice way to straight reject what they said and make them rethink it. But the flip side, “You know it sounds like the value is just not there to you.” Then immediately takes you into areas that would probably gonna solve the problem, actually much more quickly. Also, this is what we could like to say delay or save time. This is a great time saver to hack into forwarding the negotiations. JR: “Okay, so how am I supposed to do that? And then sounds like the value isn’t there for you.” CV: “Right.” JR: “And what’s interesting twice that you’ve done that I’ve been noticing for people because I just read the book I know what to look for or at least some of the things , is you did two things that I think were important you pointed out in the book. One: Slow down! So often I know this myself, our heart rate gets going, we get excited we get nervous palms, we start seeing the finish line and so we start talking really fast and getting excited, oh totally, we can do that for you and according to the book that’s not helping.” CV: “No, first thing is because one is such time pressure we think we got to speed up in order to solve it and the exact opposite is true. I had a judge in front of the trial in New York and had this great phrase, we’re gonna delay things in order to save time. You know so you actually get into the negotiation process faster because you get off the gerbil wheel, you know people go faster but they’re on the gerbil wheel with repetitive conversations and they don’t understand that if they slow down they get fewer conversations and in it entirety save a lot of time. So slowing down actually does accelerate the process you make fewer mistakes to don’t renegotiate you don’t have as many misunderstandings and you know misunderstandings or false agreements, which are really gerbil wheel of business as well as eats up our time, so it’s understanding actually have move much more quickly by taking a more deliberative approach and having fewer conversations.” JR: “Very nice and then the other thing is watching the physiology and tonality of what’s goin on and then one thing you said that’s interesting, a lot of business today is done over the phone of each other or via email which email is probably the fastest way of being misunderstood because they’re reading in their own voice, hearing their own inflection of what they think you’re saying versus actually hearing you. And you pointed out the value of actually being able to see the person and be next to the person something you know I think I’ve talked about from time to time with everyone who’s watching and listening which is the concept of being able to see the congruence or incongruence within the other person and have value that can be to the actual process of negotiation and communicating.” CV: “Right, right and the incongruence is a lot of, there are numbers that are thrown out you know people talk a popular ratio of 7/38/55 and 7% are your communication is words. And you know people get caught up in whether or not those numbers are accurate and the issue is where do you use exactly a moment ago, it doesn’t matter what the ratio is what matters is whether things are incongruent you know when the tone of voice doesn’t line up with the words. I don’t care if it’s 20/80 I don’t care if it’s 50/50, if my words and my tone don’t line up we have an issue here and you’re actually communicating issue to me, you know I got a colleague, extremely successful guy got fired of lack of understanding of incongruence he’s talking to a billionaire investor in a company and the billionaire investor has got a bad idea and in discussing it on the phone, you know my friend, my colleague says “ o---k—ay” now he’s communicating real hesitancy with his tones, so his tones and his words are not exactly lining up the billionaire investor hears the word “okay” and construes that as an agreement and later accuses him of lying. So I don’t care what the ratios are, somebody, we desperately want to hear yes everybody is, it’s an addiction and so we wanna hear it so bad somebody says o---k—ay and it very easy and say YES woohoo …. You know there’s incongruence and o---k—ay means, look “I’ve got some real problems with this.” So it’s how do you hear it, how do you dig into it so you don’t end up in a train wreck or somebody losing their job or deal going bad.” JR: “And speaking of which the interesting process I forget which chapter it was but you were talking about sometimes missing those clues and how important and valuable they can be and I one of the chapters you mentioned there were certain clues, there were hidden clues and I think this eludes to the name of your group and company coz they are referred to I believe as The Black Swans of their conversation, cues that are visible or you can see like , o---k—ay, should have picked up on that one but then there’s hidden things in every negotiation, little facts and details and information and things that you did uncover changes the whole picture and if I remember right this was one of the stories if you won’t mind sharing, the gentleman who the Black Swans were something he had said no one parlayed, or no one had shared which landed up him stating that there was a certain time that he believe that he was going to leave this earth and no one heard that until afterwards and then it was like, holy smoke if we would have known that we knew he was already wanting to die - like and that was the Black Swan in that moment it was kinda hidden in the conversation or hidden from everyone knowing. So the value of purposely taking time to dig for the unknown what you said is expect the fact that there is unknown factors always.” CV: “Yeah and not gonna be gold mines, these nuggets are no small things I mean they are pieces of information and that if you get the other to tell you would change everything. And they’re always there because, it’s kinda of a two-step mind warp thing here, but were always hiding stuff in negotiations. There’s always stuff that we’re not revealing on the other side so what does that tell us. That tells us first, stuff not revealing is important otherwise we’ll reveal it. If we feel that they could gain all sorts of leverage on us we’d be vulnerable, then it also means we could trust them more but that we could make a better deal. So by definition, if we got those the other side’s got them. Now the hard part of wrap your mind around is, you know in the modern word of Donald Rumsfeld, “There are unknown unknowns.” what happens when hidden cards on both side is begin to overlap it’s you know I’d like to imagine it’s like playing Texas Holdem what would, happen if instead of taking the cards on the table that everybody gets to use, you got to see the other guy’s cards and together you can make up your best hand, that’s what you’re trying for here. But we’re scared to reveal this stuff. There are other reasons why being able to tell when somebody’s lying is not good enough because people only lie about stuff which they think is important and half of their Black Swans they don’t even know what’s important. And I was here in town and leaving in Los Angeles when I get the chance to maybe talk to the Hollywood types so I’m coaching a woman filmmaker recently she’s gotta investor and wants to buy into this film and invested in so this person cannot just be in the film but can play both primary roles. I think this person probably saw The Social Network the movie about Facebook and there was an actor that played the Winklevoss twins, the guy played both parts so this investor wants that and the film maker’s telling me , that’s gonna double our budget I mean even if I wanted to do that, the CGI, the cameras and everything else, it’s gonna be crazy, I can’t do it. “Alright so go back into the conversation and just open up the conversation and talk in the middle of conversation, the investor says “I wanna get this castle in France we can film in” .. oh what wait, woah… there’s a Black Swan, but nobody know if it’s there… or you know think based on the initial conversation, this person’s ego-driven and gonna destroy my budget and what they want. Well you know maybe they’re scared to let you know that they’ve got something to bring into the table. It’s gonna change everything, maybe they think you’re gonna take advantage of them if you got to know that so diving in, people always find crazy things by getting into the conversations.” JR: “I’ll give you a specific example that happen to me that really truly represents this and it’s something I wasn’t thinking of which it happened both ways, where we had a group reach out and it was interesting cause the fee they offered to hire us to speak was really small significantly smaller than what we would normally accept or ask for and I think they knew what our numbers were and just completely underbid it and I was like wow… but it also sparked my curiosity of why in the world would they offer that? Like that’s really small and I was scratching my head and I was like I call them and okay, what’s going on? We want to fly you to New York we want you to do an initial recording of your training and we’re gonna record it here in our studio, we’ll edit it, we’ll put it together and then we’re gonna do a digital broadcast out to probably 500 companies and as long as it’s liked we’ll do it like to another 10,000 companies and you know part of the training and we offer a couple of thousand dollars afterward. I was like, wow, we charged significantly higher than that and to do training for that many companies like we’re losing a lot of revenues by giving it all away to these companies and that was my initial thought, and I went to my Dad and I talked to him about it cause he’s been in this business for years , we’re talking back and forth so what are your thoughts? And he said, wait a minute, you never asked what is the important question and I said what? And he said, what companies are these going to? I don’t know… so I went back and asked and they said, L’oreal, Goldman Sachs, Price Water Cooper House, the biggest companies on earth and how long did it take them to build that relationship and they said they’ve been doing training with these companies for over 40 years. And he said how long will it take you to build that kind of relationship with these companies that they’re willing to put you directly inside these companies with your best stuff on showcase, how long will it take you to get into the door of all those places, and he said how many if it goes well? I said 10,000, he said buddy I don’t think you could pay for that kind of advertisement and I started laughing. And so the Black Swan was something I just didn’t even asked in that case who was going to because that was invaluable of like, Wow I didn’t realize that because it didn’t seem important to me at that time. My thought was I was losing revenue because they’re giving away our training to all these companies and in reverse it was actually helping us open a relationship with lots of companies that we had zero contact with before that and so this thought process of being able to dig around even if the information is sometimes at hand to you cause they handed that to me I just didn’t know what to do with it because that wasn’t very seasoned at that time and that field I went oh this is what to ask about that or this is how to do it and I think sometimes in looking for that Black Swan like you said something in the book were you always negotiate in teams. Which is having someone else to give you another perspective on what’s going on in case you can’t see it yourself, which in that case I couldn’t see what’s going on cause I don’t know what to look for. But luckily I have someone more seasoned from the team who knew what to look for and always on BINGO, there was the gold that we didn’t realize was sitting there the whole time.” CV: “We’ll here’s what else I really like about you telling me the story because you didn’t take yourself hostage in any way along the way. I mean, you’re curious your willing to find out, I mean of course your initial reaction was oh God you know that’s too low, I’m not gonna talk to these people or if I talk to them I’m vulnerable. I mean you still dig it in and one of the things we teach on a regular basis is you know don’t take yourself hostage by not willing to continue to talk or you know if they can’t make you say yes then you shouldn’t be afraid to talk to anybody regardless of what your perception is about the process and so you know you didn’t take yourself hostage anywhere along the line there as you pursue which I think is really cool about the way that you handle that.” JR: “Well that you, I think there’s something else I learned in the book that was really important too which was the example you said when you were teaching a class and you said okay, you give student A $10, and you tell them to make a deal with student B and you said GO, you both have to agree on it and you have to get the most you can out of this deal and you let them negotiate with each other and you were saying the different options of what happens there and so often, up here in our head, we start fighting for fair versus the reality." CV: “Ahh the F word” JR: "Yeah the F word, and that becomes a dangerous word because that’s an emotional pull in reaction into a situation and we lose our logical ability to understand what’s actually unfolding cause I think if I remember right you have people come back and say 5 and 5 or 6 and 4 and then people get pissed because it’s not fair and say, no I’m not accepting 4 you get 6, no I’m not accepting 5 even though it’s split , I want more than that, and you get these emotional reactions and I think one thing that’s interestingly you pointed out is that the deal that everyone should make is not $9 and $1 because in reality that’s the best deal the person with 10 bucks can get unless he keeps it all or she keeps it all. But then that fairness, that F word that sneaks in there gets people, would you mind sharing a bit about that?” CV: “Yeah you know once we start looking for it and I say we because I’ve got a team that I work with and I’ve got people that I’ve worked with that really contributed to the ideas. My son Brandon is probably an uncredited co-author of the book, he’s been so involved in helping develop the book since I left the FBI. So when we first, like fair man try and pick a negotiation that the word fair doesn’t come up. Probably impossible to have a conversation and it’s used both by the very manipulative types because they know how effective it is and is also use when people getting defensive and so that’s why we call it the F-bomb, because you throw the word fair out there like I just want what’s fair. And you’ve immediately accused you of being unfair and it would move them when it shouldn’t move, would have make them question themselves when they probably shouldn’t question themselves or they’d walk away from the deal they would have otherwise make them better off cause they didn’t think it was fair. And plenty of people I’m not getting what I’m worth here when take away the other side’s compensation and they would have thought it was a great deal. We tried to get into, I did some training for the National Hostage Negotiation team and then the training was over the relationship with the general contractor that brought us in fell apart we tried to get back in. There’s theoretically an $8 Million dollar contract potentially. I’m talking to a guy trying to get the introduction and he said “What’s my finder’s fee ? If I make this introduction I make this deal, and I said you know finder’s fee 10% is fair and I hadn’t really thought about it and said $800,000 would change my family’s life and I thought for myself at that moment he’s gonna make an introduction, maybe we’ll go to dinner if it works out he gets $800,000 for that dinner. That’s not fair (laughs) and we initially turned down that deal and afterwards I was thinking like that’s left over here was lots of money, you know how, what do I care how much he gets as long I get my end and I almost walk away from that from trying to make that deal we went back and said look, you got it , you get us this deal you got it. It ends up not working out but I taken myself hostage over this fairness thing and it’s everywhere, I mean I can change compensation on any deal I know it’s fair or unfair it’s gonna change every body’s perspective which is the most, almost insidious how often it comes up how much people change their minds.” JR: “It’s wild, I had that happen to me where I did a year of contract training with a company and then a few years later someone else who’s also on a training team got paid a radically different amount and all of a sudden a year of contract that seem one of my favorite things I did that year turned into something I was pissed about because I found out that was unfair how we were compensated. It’s wild how that emotion messes with you, so here’s a big question, how do people go about staying out of the F-bomb, the fairness thought process around this?” CV: “Well that’s one of the hardest things to do and a little bit of thinking through this is advanced and inoculating yourself. And also understanding how sometimes people can mess around with you, “ Like it wasn’t fair, you know your share that wasn’t fair that they got…”. The classic question I’d like to ask people is if you were taught how to expand the size of a pie, would you take a smaller portion? And most people were like no..no, I’m gonna expand the pie and I’m gonna take the less result? The great example I’d like to use a lot of times is the last lockout…the players they put all these money on the owner’s pocket and they got the smaller percentage of the pie, that wasn’t fair, well they are doin’ pretty damn good as a result. JR: “That’s a 100 million dollar contract in a bad small slice of the pie.” CV: "Yeah, they are making much more money and you know my book is another example , you know I pulled a team together to bring together this book my co-writer Tahl Raz the people I collaborated with they did a very great job and I ended up with the smaller portion of the total pie from the book proceeds but my smaller portion is significantly larger than a lot of other authors 100% of the pie. So I expanded the pie enough so that my percentage is more take home dollars for me and it’s a much better product as well so it’s a hard thing to do but again it’s not about taking yourself as a hostage.” JR: "Smart, and I think what you just said there is brilliant especially for small business owners the concept of if you can expand it enough if you can strengthen the quality of your product or service if you can strengthen the reach the amount of people you’re gonna get to. If you can add something by splitting it with someone gonna add so much value to what you’re doing that everything expands even your piece, is still worth more as a whole than if you would have kept the whole thing yourself and not expand it and not better the product and not better the service. I think that’s really important for people especially towards the beginning because we have this very weird mindset of like oh my gosh if I split half I’m left with barely anything. Instead of thinking if I split half and we make it this much better that’s better than I would have done on my own. That little distinction is really important for all entrepreneurs, but especially the beginning stages.” CV: “Yeah and a lot of reasons we got concerned about those pieces we’re scared to control there’s another issue of speed, how fast will you get things done suddenly were working by committee, there’s a phrase I heard not too long ago, you wanna go fast go alone, if you wanna go far go as a group, yeah you go fast but you don’t go far and you go far with the team. Teamwork seems inefficient in short-term but in the long-term, you get wealthy as a team, right?” JR: I like that, I like that, so a couple of questions, thank you for spending your time with us, and a couple of questions, if people want o go and grab a copy of this book, where do they go? Where is the best place? Is it amazon or do you have a site? CV: Amazon, you know it gives you the best price I gotta admit, you know I buy a lot of stuff on Amazon and I even get my best price if I buy copies of the book when I’m buying form amazon.” JR: “Same here, so go to amazon, look up “Chris Voss , Never Split the Difference” and if you’re watching the video is that yellow and red book sitting on right behind him on 2 different languages up there , if you’re listening, it’s a yellow on top and red at the bottom book just so you know you got the right one and then also for people who own a company or people who might be making a major negotiation on their life or business how do they get hold of you and your group and team to maybe help them out if they want to hire you guys for a service of bring you in for a training for their team ,where will they go for that?” CV: “The simplest way is we got a weekly negotiation newsletter, and for people that are in the United States if you send a text number to 22828 and the text is THATS RIGHT - T-H-A-T-S-R-I-G-H-T. No apostrophe, no spaces as if it’s all one word. That’ll give you the opportunity to sign up for the newsletter quick and easy comes out once a week and also we got a lot of training resources newsletter’s free that keeps you up on our different training events we’re gonna be in Los Angeles to a couple of days for a one day training event that’ll keep you to a lot of information about us, that’s the simplest quickest way is send that text THATSRIGHT no punctuation no spaces to 22828 . If you’re not in the US, the website is www.blackswanltd.com and you get a lot of same resources there.” JR: “Very cool so either they send that text or go to www.blackswantld.com if you’re listening to this look into show notes, if you’re on our blog, look below this video if you’re on Facebook or YouTube look below to see the link to take you right on over there and also the information about texting and thank you thank you thank you. I guess the last question I’d leave is I’m always curious, I just on a personal note what’s the message that you most want to leave with everyone who’s gonna watch this everyone who’s gonna listen, everyone who’s gonna tune in, what’s that core message that you really wanna ripple out that you hope they really get after watching all these and connecting with you here?” CV: “Great negotiations is about great long-term relationship, it’s not about I win you lose, If you and I win and you lose guy , that’s lose long term strategy. You know we don’t beat other people in all our deals. We beat the problem, we beat the situation. You negotiate with me I’m not negotiating to your expense , I wanna make a great deal with you and wish everybody had that attitude you know we win together , we win by collaborating and it’s not something we gotta hurt the other guy we gotta beat him. So great negotiations is great collaboration and it gives you a better life.” JR: “I like that, well again sir, thank you thank you for joining us here , thank you everyone for tuning in and checking out another episode, we’ll see you next week for another episode of JRCtv. Remember if you wanna grab a copy of Chris’ book you wanna go to amazon look up “Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss” also you can visit blackswanltd.com for bringing them out to your business to do some training on negotiation or some training or just for more information on learning from their newsletter make sure to visit there and check that out, and Chris Thank you one more time for joining us.” CV: My pleasure, I’m really honored to be on your show.

Neil S. Bulk Interview. La-La Land Records has become synonymous with Star Trek soundtracks. And not just any soundtracks, but the kind that bring history to life by delving more deeply into the rich tapestry of sounds that is a cornerstone of Gene Roddenberry's creation. One of the men behind this success is Neil S. Bulk. No stranger to film music, he is the producer of many film soundtrack releases including Batman, Batman Returns, Total Recall, Days of Heaven, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Police Academy, Dances with Wolves, and the massive 15-disc Star Trek: The Original Series Soundtrack Collection. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Neil to find out what it means to be a producer of film soundtrack releases, what sort of difficulties come up during production, and the process of transferring tape to digital.
