Some conversations are uncomfortable, but avoiding them comes with a cost. You want a more successful career, a more fulfilling relationship, a more meaningful life? What if all that's standing in your way — are the conversations that you're avoiding?“Most things that we want in life are on the other side of a difficult conversation,” says Jenn Wynn, a professor at NYU Stern School of Business and previously the director of education at the Obama Foundation. For nearly 10 years, she has taught a course on difficult conversations that equips people to communicate through discomfort in pursuit of what they want. “Sometimes it's a difficult conversation with a loved one, a colleague, a boss… sometimes it's a difficult conversation with myself,” she says. “Are you going to give up on your biggest dreams because you weren't willing to step out of your comfort zone?”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Wynn and host Matt Abrahams discuss how to build the “hard but worth-it skills” necessary for difficult communication. Whether it's asking for a raise, setting boundaries, or addressing conflict, Wynn's insights show that the conversations you're avoiding aren't just holding you back — they're keeping you from the life you really want.To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Jenn WynnThe H.I. If you are an overthinker who often feels anxious and stuck, this episode is for you! You will be encouraged to unlearn the idea that anxiety should be avoided. Instead, you'll be motivated to approach these feelings with curiosity for more ease. To lead this conversation, Kelly is joined by fellow Canadian minimalist, spoken word artist, musician, international best-selling author, and former elementary school teacher, the incredibly insightful, Humble the Poet, to share insights from his latest book, Unanxious: 50 Simple Truths to Help Overthinkers Feel Less Stress and More Calm. Humble has been featured in the New York Times, Buzzfeed, Vogue, Rolling Stone, and HuffPost, and his book has earned high praise, including from his friend and leading podcaster Jay Shetty, who writes, “Three pages in, you'll feel 1,000 lbs lighter.” In Unanxious, Humble shares how he once numbed his anxiety, and how getting curious about his triggers helped him let go of unhelpful coping patterns, embrace discomfort, and experience more peace. In this first part of Kelly and Humble's two-part discussion, Humble talks about the 90-day dopamine fast he undertook to reset his nervous system, the benefits of feeling emotions even when they're uncomfortable, and how minimalism can reveal (rather than erase) anxious thoughts, creating space for deeper self-awareness and reduced anxiety. Every leader knows the rush of validation when someone brings you a problem and you solve it on the spot. But Gary Cohen, founder of CO2 Coaching and author of Just Ask Leadership, learned that this habit can limit your team's potential and make you the organizational bottleneck. While growing his company from a $4,000 investment to 2,200 employees, he and his business partner became overwhelmed by constant questions. The solution wasn't giving faster answers—it was becoming question-askers instead of answer-givers.In interviews with over 100 exceptional leaders – from Fortune 500 executives to four-star generals – Cohen discovered they all had a moment where they shifted from being “the answer person” to “the question person.” For General Jack Chain, a promotion made him realize his role had fundamentally changed. For ConAgra's Mike Harper, moving from engineering to R&D forced him to lead experts whose knowledge far exceeded his own. These shifts inspired frameworks like the GPS model (Goal-Position-Strategy) for focused conversations and the PEAK model, which guides leaders through four questioning styles – Professor, Innovator, Judge, and Director – to spark breakthroughs.Cohen's most powerful insight is that most team members already know the answers. They don't need you to solve their problems—they need you to help them uncover solutions themselves. When they do, ownership skyrockets, and so does performance. The path to multiplying your leadership impact starts with changing your identity from “the teller” to “the asker.” Everything else follows from that transformation.

We previously released this episode on September 5, 2024. We're excited to revisit some key ideas before we dive into fresh, exciting topics soon. "Mindsets really, really matter because they set us up for learning. I don't know any leader or organization that doesn't want their employees to be engaged, to have high morale, to be learning and innovating." In this episode of The Managing With Mind and Heart, Nash Consulting's own Hana Butler joins host Ethan Nash to explore the transformative power of a growth mindset. Coined by Carol Dweck in the 1980s, the term "growth mindset" highlights how our beliefs about learning and failure shape our personal and professional lives. Hana breaks down the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset, showing how each influences our ability to innovate and grow at work. She explains that in a fixed mindset, mistakes are seen as a reflection of who we are, while in a growth mindset, they're opportunities for improvement. Text the word “LEADING” to 66866 to be added to Nash Consulting's monthly newsletter. Just practical management skills and tips. And just once a month. Pinky swear.

Most of the businesses we work with have less than 100 employees. In fact, if you were to do a bell curve, you'd see that most of our clients fall somewhere between five and 50 employees in that sweet spot. So we tend to give a lot of examples. The majority of our clients are in the contracting space or the AEC space—architecture, engineering, contracting—or industries that support those. It's a privilege to work with them. Within that, what we typically run into is not a lack of ideas or concepts, but a mindset barrier—that tends to be the rub—that keeps them from being liberated from chaos and making time for what matters most. Hey, it's Scott Beebe with Business On Purpose. Always a delight to bring you a few nuggets that can be helpful as you own a business you're trying not to be owned by. That leads to our mission: to liberate you from chaos and make time for what matters most. Make sure to visit our website, businessonpurpose.com, where you'll find all sorts of free resources. If you go to businessonpurpose.com/healthy, you can take a five-to-seven-minute assessment to evaluate the backend health of your business. Recently, I shared examples from American Paving Designs, clients of ours for years. I told you about how they had that systems mindset—whatever task they do, they document it, capture it, and record it like it's the last time they'll ever do it. Their approach to training and information management showcases the power of a growth mindset in action. By creating training videos their team can access and rewind as needed, they've implemented a system that saves time, reduces frustration, and empowers their team. That is the ultimate task and indication of a good leader: equipping the team. This method benefits both new employees seeking information for the first time and experienced staff who would otherwise answer the same questions repeatedly. How many times have we heard clients say, "How do I get people to stop knocking on my door asking to pick my brain?" One of the biggest barriers isn't ideas or opportunities—it's mindset. Their commitment to systematizing knowledge reflects a mindset shift crucial to growing businesses. What holds people back from systematizing isn't usually skill—it's mindset. Carol Dweck explains in her great book Mindset that a fixed mindset—locked up and padlocked—can hold you back and trap your business in chaos. A growth mindset, on the other hand, opens up continuous improvement, or what we call RPM: repetition, predictability, meaning—and also efficiency. With a growth mindset, you can begin to intentionally and systematically map out your business processes. Why? Not because you're a robot or obsessed, but because you want to equip others. This isn't just about process—it's about creating an environment of equipment where continuous, relentless learning (one of our five core values) and improvement are prioritized. You might be thinking, “But I'm not a systems person—that's not who I am.” Well, if that's the case, you have two options: push yourself to learn and develop the skills, or find people who excel in that area to help you. Either way, you must shift your mindset to understand the power of systematizing so that you can equip others. What's the purpose? To equip others. Why? So you and they can be liberated from chaos and make time for what matters most—not just leisure time, but meaningful work time, too. As a leader, your role is to provide the vision, mission, values, culture, resources, and support necessary to build and refine systems over time. Isn't it interesting how quickly I rattled those off—vision, mission, values, culture, resources, support? That takes a lot of time. I recently mapped out every element that needs to be trained in our business—not including the coaching task—and I'm already at 150. Creating effective systems isn't a one-time or one-module task. It's an ongoing effort to build, manage, and sharpen your tools. Continuous improvement is what separates businesses that thrive from those that merely survive—or worse, leave you stuck with a business run by a boss you hate and a job you don't like. By embracing a growth mindset and committing to systematization, you're setting your business up for long-term success—not just financially, but in solving today's problems and building a framework for tomorrow's challenges. It's both/and: learning from the past, acting in the present, and shaping the future. So what stops you? Again—it's the mindset. Visit mybusinessonpurpose.com/healthy, take the five-to-seven-minute assessment, and get a clear picture of where your business stands process-wise. Send us a textWelcome to Part 5 of our Back-to-School Series!
Ready to break free from the cycle of big ambitions followed by disappointment? The secret to lasting change might be smaller than you think. When we look at where we are versus where we want to be, the gap often feels impossibly wide. We tell ourselves "if only I had more time, money, or resources" then change would be possible. But what if the real magic happens through tiny, consistent actions that compound over time?Drawing from personal birthday reflections and journal rituals, Dr. BethAnne Kapansky-Wright shares how setting modest intentions and taking measurable steps creates sustainable transformation. These small actions—whether a brief gratitude practice, a moment of mindfulness, or a single act of kindness—aren't just placeholders until the "real change" happens; they ARE the change.Key talking points include: • The importance of journaling about personal growth and setting intentions during milestone moments• The trap of thinking we need "more" of something before we can make progress• Little deeds of intention compound over time to create meaningful change• Small steps are more sustainable than dramatic changes or grand gestures• Starting with something that seems "too easy" can help build momentum• Quality of intention matters more than quantity of action• The power of being "one drop" that contributes to the ocean of positive change• Setting 1-2 small, achievable goals is better than overwhelming yourself with too many changesRemember: "Keep it simple, take actionable steps and see what grows from there. Little deeds of intention compound." When the world feels overwhelming, the answer isn't more overwhelm—it's simplifying, grounding, and taking action within your immediate sphere of influence.Join us next week for an all-new episode of Your Heart Magic and more psychology, spirituality, storytelling, and heart wisdom.--Your Heart Magic is a space where heart wisdom, spirituality, and psychology meet.
