The link is located right below this audio player. For this Wednesday Bible Study, we will consider the words of this week's Old Testament Lesson: 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33. Hopefully, these studies encourage you to engage in a deeper study of the current passage. But, more importantly, I hope these studies deepen your love for the Word of God. Let's begin: Last week's Old Testament Lesson related Nathan's encounter with King David over his sin with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband, Uriah. Though David confesses his sin, the consequences of what he has done will follow him and his family for generations.  This record is found in: 2 Samuel 12:9-14 NAS95 'Why have you despised the word of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.  [10] 'Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.' [11] "Thus says the LORD, 'Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight.  [12] 'Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and under the sun.'"  [13]  Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has taken away your sin; you shall not die.  [14]  "However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die." When we confess our sin with a penitent heart, God does indeed forgive us. Sometimes, the lasting consequences are not publicly evident, but nevertheless, they exist. In David's case, the consequences of his sin will be on display for all of Israel to see. David was reminded to his dying day of the cost of sin. As I noted in last week's sermon podcast, David learned some very important lessons. Sin will take you farther than you ever thought you'd go; it will keep you there longer than you ever intended to stay, and it will cost you more than you ever expected to pay. This week's Old Testament Lesson relates to one of those consequences. Listen as I read: 2 Samuel 18:5-9 NAS95 The king charged Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the people heard when the king charged all the commanders concerning Absalom.  [6]  Then the people went out into the field against Israel, and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim.  [7]  The people of Israel were defeated there before the servants of David, and the slaughter there that day was great, 20,000 men.  [8]  For the battle there was spread over the whole countryside, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.  [9]  Now Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. For Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak. And his head caught fast in the oak, so he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him kept going. 2 Samuel 18:19 NAS95 Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, "Please let me run and bring the king news that the LORD has freed him from the hand of his enemies." 2 Samuel 18:31-33 NAS95 Behold, the Cushite arrived, and the Cushite said, "Let my lord the king receive good news, for the LORD has freed you this day from the hand of all those who rose up against you."  [32]  Then the king said to the Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" And the Cushite answered, "Let the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you for evil, be as that young man!"  [33]  The king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And thus he said as he walked, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!" Certain verses suggest that King David was a permissive parent. After his daughter Tamar was raped by her brother Amnon, Scripture records: 2 Samuel 13:21 NASB Now when King David heard about all these matters, he became very angry. When his son Adonijah seeks to take the throne instead of Solomon, the Bible records the following: 1 Kings 1:6 NASB And his father had never rebuked him at any time by asking, "Why have you done so?" And he was also a very handsome man, and he was born after Absalom. Both of these cases tell us that though he was a man after God's own heart, David failed to discipline his children, to raise them to have good sense and follow the Lord. Absalom, who is mentioned in this week's lesson, also orchestrated the death of Amnon for raping his sister. 2 Samuel 13:28-29 NASB Then Absalom commanded his servants, saying, "See now, when Amnon's heart is cheerful with wine, and I say to you, 'Strike Amnon,' then put him to death. Do not fear; have I not commanded you myself? Be courageous and be valiant."  [29]  And the servants of Absalom did to Amnon just as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons got up and each mounted his mule and fled. This lesson records the death of Absalom after he attempts to overthrow his father as king. In these verses, David makes an unwise decision by telling his commanders to Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom. This must discourage them after all the death, destruction, and upheaval that Absalom's rebellion has caused the nation. As you might remember from Sunday School, while trying to escape, Absalom runs into a tree and wedges his head and neck in the crook of a branch. The king's military commander, Joab, knowing the danger of allowing Absalom to live takes matters into his own hands. 2 Samuel 18:14 NASB Then Joab said, "I will not waste time here with you." So he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of Absalom while he was still alive in the midst of the oak. Once David is informed of his son's death, he weeps. Regardless of what Absalom had done, he was still his son. However, David's weeping over Absalom is considered shameful and affects the loyalty of his soldiers. If not for the intervention of Joab, his military commander, David would have lost his kingdom. 2 Samuel 19:5-7 NASB Then Joab came into the house to the king and said, "Today you have shamed all your servants, who have saved your life today and the lives of your sons and daughters, the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines,  [6]  by loving those who hate you, and by hating those who love you. For you have revealed today that commanders and servants are nothing to you; for I know today that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead today, then it would be right as far as you are concerned.  [7]  "Now therefore arise, go out and speak kindly to your servants, for I swear by the LORD, if you do not go out, no man will stay the night with you, and this will be worse for you than all the misfortune that has happened to you from your youth until now!" I wonder that if at any point David thought back to God's declaration in: 2 Samuel 12:10 NASB 'Now then, the sword shall never leave your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.' I encourage you to go back and read 2 Samuel 11-12 to remind yourself of how seriously God regards sin. Let's Pray, Gracious Heavenly Father, We are grateful that You forgive our sin when we come before You with a penitent heart. Help us to think of the consequences as various temptations come our way. Strengthen our walk with You this day. In the Name of Jesus, Amen!

Have you ever understood the difference between situational and clinical depression? My guest, David Anderson, had no idea there were two different types until he was diagnosed with clinical depression. David always felt an underlying level of sadness but never really thought there was anything that abnormal. David chats to us today about his road to recovery and how his faith and religion made him feel a lot of shame because of his diagnosis. In David’s faith community, depression is often related to not having a strong enough relationship with God. So it took a lot of research and discovery for David to not feel like a failed Christian. David is a multi-passionate writer of fiction and nonfiction. Dr. David Campt is a national expert on inclusion and intergroup dialogue. David has worked with groups from large corporations to the White House, and has appeared on The Daily Show. He speaks about about how we talk with each other, and how to help people come together. In 4th grade, David had a teacher tell him that “People are more alike than they are different,” and in his critical work, David shows audiences how to use dialogue in order to connect and come together. David tells us about how the world has changed over the last 20 years. When he was in the White House in 1998, black people took on the unpaid job of trying to talk to white people about racism. Now black people are saying, “You do the work -- it’s not up to us.” And 55% of white people think that racism experienced by white people is just as important as the racism experienced against black people. The work isn't helping people to understand the importance of that question, it's to hel the 45% of people who do believe racism is an issue to talk with the 55% who do not -- that's the basis of David’s important work. David encourages conversation, and has been inspired by the growth of the ally movements across all areas. We talked about "race method"and "reach method": in difficult conversations, in order to be productive, you want to do two things up front. First, move from facts and beliefs to experiences; and secondly, ABC: "Agree Before Challenging," meaning establish common ground before inviting people to new thinking. RACE is David's acronym for racial conversations, and REACH is for other conversations. R - Reflect (get centered) and think of stories you want to tell. A - Ask questions (vs attacking).... ask about their experience (vs their beliefs) that inspires their point of view. C - Connect; find something you can agree with in their position and tell a story about that. E - Expand their view... by telling another story where you had a different experience R - Reflect E - Enquire (British spelling) A - Agree C - Confess H - Harmonize David wants people to invite each other to a place of new thinking vs coercing or forcing them to it. David’s methods have people first coming to agreement before they try to teach people to think differently. According to David, people on the Left are “too woke” and treat the people on the Right like they don’t know anything. In David’s book, Compassion Transforms Contempt, he talks about moving the country forward by treating each other with more compassion, which is more persuasive. Compassion is key to personal change. Moving towards something vs fighting something you hate is so much more effective. If you want to be effective, finding common ground is a good thing. These are skills to practice, but you have to want to do it. 2020 has been an eye-opening year in terms of race. We’ve opened our eyes to experiences like George Floyd’s gruesome murder, unconscious bias, and mircoaggressions (or as David says, Inadvertent Dignity Violations), and now it’s up to each of us to do better. David’s tips can be helpful in this. Moving on to our work lives -- the key to building and maintaining diverse teams? We have to support people in a reasonable way so that they can be themselves. We asked about David’s approach to handling unconscious bias and microaggression situations with peers and leaders at work, and how to handle them as a bystander. David’s #1 strategy is to say to either person, not that one person is wrong or even that you're offended. Instead, David recommends: “When [the thing you're bringing up] was said, I felt weird.” This phrase doesn’t make presumptions about how someone should feel, or show malicious intent, but instead invites people to talk. This can work with both peers and leaders, and can be followed with, “I don’t believe you intended that” or “I’m not sure how the other person felt.” How are companies improving diversity hiring? David talked about removing diversity markers from resumes to promote equality. He also talked about the importance of employee resource groups. To make these effective, top level management must say they are important, and must train people to be mentors and allies outside of their own group. Lastly, David believes in high quality unconscious bias training that shows that everyone is subject to biased thinking. We feel more comfortable when we understand that everyone has bias. Employee surveys are are an important too, and are important, but looking at the top level numbers can be misleading; instead, breaking down the data by group can allow up to come to a deeper understanding to create a workplace that works for everyone. For executives to get DE&I sensitive, they may need private coaching, because they can’t be completely honest about their own biases, struggles and concerns in front of employees. Executives also need to support diverse hires in building up their skills in order to help those colleagues feel welcome, Telling people the potential you see in them, and supporting them, can help them reach that potential from a place of empathy. If a manager hires a person to diversify the team, but there is a skills gap that can be learned, it is up to the manager to empower the person to fill that skills gap in order to help them succeed. What about creating roles for diverse candidates with relevant experience? David’s a believer in that strategy, because diverse teams make companies and products better. As long as it’s a quality role for a relevant candidate, be creative to add diversity. As we closed out the podcast, we asked the hard question about healing our nation. David encourages people to find ways to come together, and reach out to people who voted differently and find that common ground. Own up to the transgressions we made to the other side, and admit your part in the polarization. He asks us to reach out to friends with different opinions and ask questions and not put yourself in a position to argue. Learn and understand if you can handle it, and call out different viewpoints. You can start with figuring out something we all want, or where we all want to go, and figure out how we can come together to recognize that shared value of completing this project together. “If a plane is going to fly, it needs a left wing and a right wing.” David Campt's website: davidcampt.com (https://www.davidcampt.com) David on Twitter: @thedialogueguy (https://twitter.com/thedialogueguy) White Ally Toolkit: whiteallytoolkit.com (https://www.whiteallytoolkit.com)

In the meantime, we are so excited to share with you an episode of the UnMastered Podcast where Carla and Ryan talk with our friend David Clifford, Creative Director and Equity Designer at Equity Meets Design. In David’s own words: “As a heterosexual, upper-middle-class, able-bodied White man, David is the beneficiary of the generations of oppression of people in U.S. He uses his legacy privilege to challenge the very systems and structures of oppression that placed him in his unearned place of power.”Our conversation with David illustrates the great lengths that he has gone to be fully conscious of his own whiteness which has given him both privilege and power, which he has wrestled with as a teacher, school leader, parent and resident of the diverse city of Oakland. He shares, through many humble and vulnerable stories, the deep work he has done on himself and in his professional universe to combat inequities and to create more just schools and organizations. His story begins as a young child growing up in Pasadena and his journey takes him to schools in San Francisco and Oakland to the Stanford d.School and to the National Equity Project. David is an artist, a builder, and a fine human. A bit more on David that we don’t share in the podcast: David founded DSX, an educational non-profit that invites the creative courage in all of us to design for equity. David is also co-creator of Liberatory Design, a complexity-centered approach to design for equity in your heart and working context co-created during a collaboration in 2016/17 with the National Equity Project and d.school's K12 Lab. David is a founding member of the Equity Design Collaborative. David co-founded the East Bay School for Boys as a feminist act to empower middle school boys to be thoughtful, courageous and engaged men of tomorrow. Before that, during his 13 years at Lick-Wilmerding High School in San Francisco leading the Technical Arts department, David co-designed and built many programs: Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership, Philanthropy Initiative, Senegal Service Learning Project and Private Skills for Public Purpose. David, a resident of Oakland for 30 years, is married with two lovely daughters who have attended both public and private schools in Oakland.Enjoy this conversation with David. The section of https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2018.1-9 (Psalm 18:1-9) expresses David's love for God and his praise to the Lord for delivering him from his enemies. We see similar expressions from David in https://biblia.com/bible/esv/2%20Sam%2022 (2 Samuel 22), as well as https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%203-5 (Psalms 3-5). As we break down this verse, there are five metaphors that David uses to describe God's relationship with him. 1) He views God as his rock 2) He views God as his fortress 3) He views God as his shield 4) He views God as the horn of salvation 5) He views God as his stronghold What is important about these metaphors? They identify David as a warrior. He fought enemies, often much stronger than him (remember Goliath?). Yet, he relied on God for protection. God as the rock: We see examples of these same metaphors used to describe God throughout the Psalms, such as in https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Ps%2019.14 (Psalm 19:14); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2028.1 (28:1); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2062.2 (62:2); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Psalm%2094.22 (94:22) which all describe God as a rock. God as David's Fortress: What is the purpose of a fortress? It's meant to protect against enemies. Throughout Scripture there is an incredible truth to be seen here: no fortress built by human hands could ever provide as much protection for David as the fortress of the Lord. God as David's Shield: We see the Lord protecting David from his enemies on several accounts throughout the Old Testament. David recognizes this as he writes in the Psalms, calling God his shield, covering him as a soldier. God as the horn of salvation: This one may be tricky at first to fully grasp without some cultural context surrounding this phrase. In David's era, horns were a symbol of strength. This is why we see them being used as metaphors for kings in rulers (https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Dan%207.8 (Daniel 7:8); https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Rev%2017.12 (Revelation 17:12)). Therefore, as David's horn of salvation, he is saying that the Lord empowered and delivered him. God as David's stronghold: For believers today, we have Jesus Christ as our stronghold – our refuge and shield. The apostle Paul refers to our lives as “hidden with Christ in God” in https://biblia.com/bible/esv/Col%203.3 (Colossians 3:3). As you go about your day today, keep in mind these incredible truths from this Psalm. It is only through our belief and acceptance as Jesus as our savior for us to be “hidden with Christ in God,” and through this belief, we are Scripturally able to rely on God to be all of these same things for us.

(12:26) David shares that if you want to be a trusted advisor and you have a value proposition, you have to identify your work rate per hour and figure out on the front end if those deals are worth your time. (13:15) Does David have other formulas? (14:17) Kyle mentions the only issue that always drives him crazy is when the insured is not willing to give the correct information. (17:15) David mentions that once you've been in the business for a bit, once you've done some research, and you've been on a few calls, you know who you're going to have success with. (18:34) Key Quotes: “I got a raise to five bucks an hour and I thought I had made it.. I thought I'd made my ascension into the aristocracy at that point. It was fantastic. I was 15 making five bucks an hour. That was like legend status at that point.” - David Carothers “You've got to define who you want to go after. And don't deviate from that.” - David Carothers “I think that's where we fall, man. We have such an opportunity to be in a lucrative occupation where you're gonna just score serious coin if you write the right type of stuff, that we don't stop and look at efficiency and how we're investing our time and what we're doing.” - David Carothers “You get blinded by the premiums and I think that's a natural thing, but you're totally right. I think you need to sit down, and figure out what your worth is when you're going through this.” - Kyle Houck “Agency principles by and large, when they're looking at efficiency, when they're looking to enhance profitability, they always look at the inward portion of the operation to make sure that the service people are turning enough tickets on time, you know that they're issuing the certificates as quickly as they come in, getting all their tasks closed out all of that, because it's tangible and easy for them to measure.” - David Carothers “The difference between the most successful people in any form of business not just in production, but in any kind of business, is they understand their value. They know what their value is, when you go after this stuff, you might get some endorphin release in your brain that gives you temporary pleasure over the fact that you closed something.” - David Carothers Resources Mentioned: David Carothers LinkedIn Kyle Houck LinkedIn Florida Risk Partners The Extra 2 Minutes

In this episode of The Power Producers Podcast, David Carothers and co-host Kyle Houck interviews Teresa Kitchens, Owner and Agent at Sterling Insurance Group and host of the Power Women In Insurance podcast, and Denisse Bravo, Owner and Vice President at Bravo Insurance Solutions. Teresa and Denisse discuss how they got into the insurance business and how they built their insurance agency. They also share their knowledge and expertise in the insurance world and the IAOA subgroup they have created. Episode Highlights: David introduces Teresa Kitchens and Denisse Bravo. (1:33) Denisse shares her background and her career in the insurance industry. (2:25) Denisse shares that her best explanation about the Portuguese language is that the cadence of how they speak is almost like a song. (3:57) Kyle shares one thing that he finds interesting is that not only do people not intend on getting into the industry that we've been interviewing, but most of them have come from captive agencies. (4:25) In David’s opinion, it's easier to execute when all of the boundaries, rules, and everything are in place, rather than creating all of the boundaries and all of the rules. (5:32) Teresa shares her background and her career in the insurance industry. (8:57) Teresa mentions that her dream is more on the business side than becoming an agent in a CSR platform type of model. (11:03) Teresa shares that as an advisor, they’re educating, teaching, and they’re capable of connecting with everyone, wherever they are. (11:47) David mentions his theory on things related to insurance and sales. (13:04) What does Denisse’s agency look like, and what kind of business does she write? (14:33) David thinks that if you’re a P&C agent and calling on business owners, you should have the buy-sell agreement conversation with them, immediately. (19:55) David hopes that this year, people will step back and make educated decisions, instead of looking at the price. (21:58) Denisse believes that they have some kind of a mass exodus, on the life and health side. (23:09) What does Teresa’s agency look like? (23:51) Teresa thinks that every agency owner gets to a point where they get into the business, bring in the revenue, and make it work. (25:56) Teresa shares that at this point, they’re in the growth process, they moved back, stopped, resituated for a bit, and now they’re at the point where they’re ready to escalate and move forward. (27:17) Teresa mentions that her biggest fear in life is letting people down. (29:35) Denisse shares a story about a client prospect that she fired yesterday. (29:54) David shares the conversation he had with a BMW car dealer. (30:43) What are Teresa and Denisse doing with their subgroup of IAOA? (34:15) Teresa explains how she met Denisse. (34:24) Teresa shares that she started a podcast called Power Women In Insurance. (35:38) What were the biggest challenges that Teresa and Denisse faced, and no holds barred? (38:09) Has David ever been asked to smile more? (48:04) David shares a story about a client/prospect who sent an utterly inappropriate attachment, to one of the ladies who worked with him. (49:02) Denisse mentions that women are exposed to certain pressures, that their counterparts are not. (53:03) Teresa mentions that sometimes, people take different advantages of a woman than they do, from a man. (54:14) Teresa shares a short background about their group. (57:30) Teresa thinks that positivity is one of the overall resounding things that their group is bringing to the table. (58:14) At this moment, how many members do Teresa and Denisse have in their group? (58:30) Denisse shares one thing that she loves about the women of IAOA is that they're not pulling punches. (1:00:07) David thinks that collaboration is very significant. (1:01:11) Teresa shares that they need to make sure that everybody feels like they have a voice, and make everybody feel that their contribution is essential. (1:04:05) Tweetable Quotes: “I loved being a teacher, I loved being a stay at home mom, and I love insurance. It's really weird, but I got in on the back door and you know, I've been able to have a lot of fun in the process.” - Teresa Kitchens “Watching these women take off that have found their own careers in industry is inspiring. Hearing how they manage their families, hearing how they manage their teams, hearing how they have acquired their positions, and how they deal with the other people that worked for them and with them is something that I think a lot of women could benefit from.” - Teresa Kitchens “I'm going to hit that first question that you asked, what is the biggest problem? Okay, women are expected to work like they don't have children, and mothers are supposed to act like they don't work. In a nutshell, that's what the difference is.” - Denisse Bravo “Women even sometimes think of women not necessarily as their boss, they think they can go on and talk about all their problems, your bestie, buddy, you know, we have to keep a little bit more of a distance because women are nurturing, women are caring, and sometimes people take that for granted, and people sometimes take different advantage of a woman than they do, from a man.” - Teresa Kitchens Resources Mentioned: David Carothers LinkedIn Kyle Houck LinkedIn Florida Risk Partners The Extra 2 Minutes Teresa Kitchens LinkedIn Sterling Insurance Group Denisse Bravo LinkedIn Bravo Insurance Solutions Power Women In Insurance Podcast The Women Of IAOA Facebook Group Insurance Agency Owners Alliance

He also discusses the benefits of utilizing the Growth Matrix to develop salespeople, processes, and overall performance.   Episode Highlights: David introduces Bob Paskins. (1:34) Bob shares his background and his career in the insurance industry. (2:02) Bob mentions that he’s been kind of an insurance geek all of his professional career. (2:03) Bob shares a fun story about his sales training. (6:23) What was Bob’s reaction, when they asked him to train producers? (8:32) Bob shares that as soon as he became an owner, most of his conversations changed. (9:32) Bob shares that he loved working with clients, but the vessel of insurance wasn't right for him. (11:00) Bob mentions that at this point, he has helped insurance brokers look to drive their sales, and business growth. (11:19) What were the obstacles that Bob faced when he had to take on a new role inside of the agency, where he was working? (11:54) Bob thinks that one of the reasons they chose him over his peers is because of his growth, which was organically based. (12:06) David shares that he wouldn’t change anything in the way he started his career. (14:14) Bob shares that organic growth is vital to increase the bottom line and the profitability of the agency. (16:15) In David’s opinion, it’s significant to understand that prolonged production magnifies the value of the assets that they're building, in addition to the income that they're building. (17:28) Bob shares one question he asks insurance agency owners that tells him more about the owner than anything else. (19:45) Bob thinks that it’s significant to perpetuate within the organization to have control, and your clients also have trusted in what's going to happen with them. (21:55) How was Bob’s transition, from being a producer to consulting programs? (23:09) Bob shares that through his 20 years of experience in trying to figure out exactly how to sell, he came up with areas that he considers to grow his book of business. (23:25) Bob shares that the Growth Matrix analyzes the six different components around your business that help your business grow, and you must focus on each one of the components to get the most effective growth strategy. (23:41) What is the most common shortfall that Bob has seen? (25:58) David shares a quote that his friend Bernie Borgess is always using. (28:50) David mentions that they are a huge ZyWave agency, and they have built their business around using most of their products. (30:10) Bob shares that when it comes to CRM and AMS, he sees them in two different areas. (35:35) Bob mentions that one of the things about his Growth Matrix is finding money and finding opportunities. (36:52) When Bob’s going in and working with agencies, does it also revolve around the sales function? (37:02) Bob shares his opinion about revenues. (37:16) Kyle shares that most of what they’re talking about reminds him of his days when he used to sell office supplies. (39:11) Kyle thinks it’s necessary that when you have a process, it should be simple and the current person who has no insurance knowledge can pick up on it. (39:47) Bob mentions that most insurance brokers have to work on their sales culture. (40:21) Bob shares one of the first things that he likes to do when he’s meeting with businesses. (45:09) How long does Bob typically engage with his clients? (47:12) Bob mentions that there are a lot of businesses and good-hearted people, who are willing to save producers that have received criticisms from other agencies. (50:32) Bob explains his Breakaway Consulting Program. (51:41)   Tweetable Quotes: “Well, confidence has never been my problem, or maybe another way of saying that is ego hasn't been my problem.” - Bob Paskins “I honestly believe that when people get to the 60 or the 65 years old, they're looking around and their mindset shifts from this is what I did, to now. I want to have this legacy that I‘ll leave behind, and if they have not put the steps in place for that, by the time they're that age, it's really difficult for them.” - Bob Paskins “Creating a good agency culture is another huge variable. Because if you don't have that good culture in place, then at some point people are going to have the look over the fence. Maybe the grass is greener somewhere else.” - Bob Paskins “You can have that one rotten apple and that one rotten apple could be in production, or I've seen that one rotten apple is on the account management side, and if they start poisoning the well against the company or the ownership of the company, it creates all sorts of problems.” - Bob Paskins “You are in the goal to protect your business and to grow your business. You are not in the goal to rescue people. If you are, okay fine. But you're going to create a whole bunch of additional problems when you should be focusing on actually growing that business.” - Bob Paskins   Resources Mentioned: David Carothers LinkedIn Kyle Houck LinkedIn Florida Risk Partners The Extra 2 Minutes Bob Paskins LinkedIn Bob Paskins Enterprises, LLC

(1:08) David shares that he’s had several people reach out to him from just hearing the podcast great (1:28) What has writing this book meant to David? (2:15) David thinks that he underestimated the reach that we have on people and our ability to influence people in changing the way they run their business, or they approach sales. (2:23) In David’s opinion, if the book has made enough impact on people, they'll take the time to go do that. (3:39) Josh shares the reason why he’s doing this podcast. (4:29) David mentions that he’s generous with his time, he likes helping people, and he likes knowing that the advice that he gave helps them win. (9:43) Josh mentions the next section of the book, which is closing the deal and it starts with Chapter 12, The Meeting. (10:03) Could David give us an example of how or what he would say to the prospect in discussing the journey, how he prospects, why he’s a good fit, and why they're a good fit? (11:47) David shares that it’s essential to know the prospects that you're going to be able to make the biggest impact on, and have the best opportunity to drive, and change in their organizations. (12:26) David shares one of the best success stories he ever had. (13:42) Does David ever get to the point and realize that the prospect is not a good fit for him and the agency, and how does he pivot the conversation to not move forward? (17:10) David shares that he doesn’t want to ask people about the insurance-related question because they're automatically associating that with having to physically purchase something, or prematurely make the decision to do business with him. (20:25) David explains the significance of the three questioning processes. (24:37) David thinks that people tend to make the mistake of talking badly about their competition. (27:03) David mentions his biggest concern. (29:44) What if David’s agency isn't appointed with the company, does it matter? (36:20) Josh shares that if you want to download a sample of the termination letter and bullet points, just open up the book, go to the last part of each section, and you will see a website. (38:17) Josh mentions the final section and chapter of the book which is Chapter 13, Onboarding. (38:32) Josh believes that the client’s experience is something that we all need to strive for, regardless of the type of industry or client we are dealing with. (39:02) Josh shares that this chapter consists of essentially six things that Florida risk partners do to provide a truly exceptional client experience. (39:32) David mentions his challenge for everyone. (44:57)       Key Quotes: “If you do your research and you find the hot buttons, and you know what's going to motivate somebody, then you go into that meeting, and it's more about you learning about them than it is them hearing you. Just spew out everything you possibly can in the limited amount of time about your business, you're going to gain their respect and their trust much quicker.” - David Carothers “My ultimate goal is to demonstrate that I know about them by asking questions that require them to give me answers to help me know them, on an even deeper level.” - David Carothers “Even though we're salespeople, we want to be called trusted advisors. And there's an art and a science to doing that. I talk about it all the time, it's not just art, it's not just a skill, it's both.” - David Carothers “When you think a good job is done, sit there and think, what's the one thing I can do to take this to the next level in two minutes or less? Here's an excerpt: "Learn how to harvest and easily dry flowers and herbs from the garden. Also included is a list of common flowers and herbs along with ideas for using them! An ideal time to collect fresh flowers and herbs from your garden is on a dry, sunny day, after morning dew has evaporated, but before the midday sun is out in full force. Some flowers, such as dandelion, chamomile, calendula and lavender can be dried whole. The petals from larger flowers, such as roses and hollyhocks, should be separated from the flower head before drying. An exception to this is if you're drying small rosebuds. They can also be dried whole, just be sure to turn a few times a day so one side doesn't dry flatter than the other. I dry flower clusters, like elder flowers and lilacs, upside down on a towel as shown above, to help preserve some of the shape. Small branches of leaves that easily lay flat when placed on a surface, such as elderleaf, can stay together while drying. Leaves that cluster together, like lemon balm and mint, often do best if you detach each leaf before drying."   It's National Rainier Cherry Day. Rainier cherries were bred at Washington State University by crossing Vans and Bings. They are one of the most delicate and challenging cherries to grow because of one big drawback: their thin red-yellow skin. This makes them super sensitive to the elements, and they bruise easily. Even if a grower can address these challenges, they still must contend with the birds. Birds LOVE Rainiers and can eat as much as 1/3 of the cherry crop before the harvest arrives. Watch what happens if you add a few Rainier Cherries to your bird feeder.   Deadhead to Encourage More Blooms What happens if you don't deadhead? You might miss out on valuable time that your plant could use to create that second flush of blooms. Plants to deadhead include coreopsis, blue and white clips, geraniums, and dianthus. Another reason is to encourage more blooms the following year. Dead flower heads become seed pods, and that takes energy from the plant. So be sure to deadhead peonies, roses, iris, and lilies. As a general rule, when any plant looks leggy, it will benefit from deadheading or plain ol' pruning.   Alright, that's it for today's gardening news. He would ultimately become the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens of Calcutta and Kew. In 1887, David was sent to Calcutta to be the curator of the herbarium. While he was there, he researched Indian Hemp along with crops like Wheat, Mustard, Pulses, and Indigo. But, David's most crucial work involved Cinchona plantations. The bark of Cinchona trees contains quinine, which is used to treat malaria. In David's obituary, it said that he set up a system with the local post offices to send quinine to every Indian village and undoubtedly saved countless lives. After David returned to England, he became the director at Kew. During his tenure, David implemented many notable changes. David oversaw the effort to have the medicinal garden installed at Cambridge Cottage, and he acquired the Japanese gateway for the 1910 Japan-British exhibition. In terms of promotional efforts, David also reinstated the Kew Bulletin. David's most significant professional challenge at Kew came not from a plant, but a person. William Purdom was a sub-foreman at Kew, and he was passionate about making sure that the garden staff was being treated fairly. Tensions started when some of the gardeners discovered that their positions were only temporary. In addition, wages were well below market level. Even though all of these challenges were legacy issues David had inherited, the problems fell squarely on his shoulders. David's humble origins gave him a heart for his workers, and he did his best to mediate the situation. While David stayed professional, Purdom made it personal, and he pressured David relentlessly. Finally, when he felt despite his best efforts that Purdom would never be satisfied, David forced the issue. David basically said to the powers that be, that they had a choice;  it was him or Purdom. In the end, David got the support he needed, and Purdom moved on.  In a noble gesture, David worked to get Purdom a lead spot on the expedition to China sponsored by Harry Veitch and the Arnold Arboretum. Today, history looks back at David Prain with admiration, that he could recognize the talents of an employee, even while disagreeing with him - acting with both fairness and integrity.   1938   On this day Canadian Naturalist Charles Joseph Sauriol ("Sar-ee-all") wrote in his diary: "I find it hard to come in from the flower borders. My Pansies are a garden of enchantment in themselves. People who love Pansies should grow them from seed. I took the advice and I have never had such a profusion of bloom and of so many colors."   1941  On this day, the Amarillo Daily News ran an article featuring Charles Sumner Lambie, who was a Denver area civil engineer by day and a rare orchid breeder by night. Charles grew up in Pittsburgh, tending the family garden. He later married Margaret McCandless, and together they raised nine children. As his engineering firm became successful, Charles's wife said he turned to the hobby of raising orchids as a means of relief from the stresses of his job. Charles shared an upside that he discovered about greenhouse gardening: He no longer suffered from hayfever as he did when he gardened outside. After sharing the various types of orchids grown by Charles Lambie, the article shared his unique and detailed method for documenting his plants. Here's what it said: "Mr. Lambie has a card index file ... on each plant. Here is a sample entry from the card of C. Talisman: L.O. Talisman: 6 inches, December 1938, Christmas; Winter Bloomer, October to early summer, variable. Flowers large, Sepals and petals – Light to dark rose. Lip, dark rich crimson; Throat purple with yellow – gold veins." Mr. Lambie puts a protective canopy over the orchids when they are in bloom, and he sprays them several times a day. When Mr. Lambie leaves town on business, Mrs. Lambie makes sure that the orchids are watered several times today. As the reporter for the story was leaving, Mrs. Lambie showed him a small orchid and shared that Mr. Lambie was given the orchid when he subscribed to an orchid magazine. The orchid is called the Charles Lambie Rittenberry orchid named for their grandson, and of course, it receives "very careful attention," she added with a smile.   1950   On this day, a very unusual dwarf Amaryllis species was collected in Peru by the eminent botanist, Dr. Ramon Ferreyra ("feh-REY-rah"). Dr. Ferreyra sent the bulbs to another botanist, Dr. Hamilton P. Traub, in the United States. Unfortunately, the bulbs experienced frost while they were in the mail. Dennesen was once an internationally recognized authority on botany, and he led a wonderful life. Dennesen served as a captain under Christian IX in Denmark's war with Germany. He was wounded in battle and captured by the enemy. He was shipwrecked on the Isle of Crete and sailed around Cape Hope. After the adventurous days of the soldier and sailor, he became a professor at the Copenhagen School of Botany, and among his pupils was a little princess who later became Queen Alexandria, mother of King George of England, and a little prince who later became King Constantine of Greece. The newspaper reported that, "The men's Bible class of St. John's Lutheran Church, in Jacksonville Florida, had planned a surprise birthday party, but the jolly old Dane winked as he hinted it is hard to surprise the man who has been around for 103 years." Dennesen immigrated to America in 1881 and lived to be 111 years old. Now that's an old botanist.

In David's case, as a young man, he's having some stress and he's having a lot of adversity because the king is trying to kill him. How he handles it, we can compare to your life and how you're handling some of the things that you're going through today. David waited on God's justice and did not execute his own justice. No man is too important to be replaced by God. Romans 13:1 tells us, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except that which God has established, and the authorities that exist are established by God.” Our freedom and the blessing of God on our nation depends on you. As goes your spiritual life so will go the history of the United States of America. Full Transcript https://rhem.pub/775-transcript --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rick-hughes/message

While Nino himself may not be entirely versed on the matter, he has hung around a few celebrities that are aware of it; it’s Hollywood. We talk about the angles surrounding why his video got so much attention and why people were clamoring to hear his message. In times like these, everyone’s a little tense and anxious; uncertainty fills our days, followed by confusion and ultimately sadness. In David’s video, he speaks about these times in a particular way, mentioning that, before the better days arrive, we have to experience some hardships first. As dark as times may seem, things will get better and they are, it’s just not easy. Hearing that justice is being served to crooked pedophiles, in these strange days, offers a glimmer of hope. In this special transmission, you’ll hear both David and myself speak on sobriety, breaking the cycle of dependency and also getting closer in our faiths due to the hardships we’ve faced. These themes and more are present in his book, When The Lights Go Out: From Survivor to Champion. Take it from an undefeated boxer, in times like these, all you have is your faith and your willpower to pull yourself together. I was introduced to the concept of projects and project management through a productivity guy: David Allen. In David’s book Getting Things Done, he says (and I paraphrase), "We get overwhelmed by all the stuff on our plates. Start thinking about almost everything you do as a project, and then you can start managing it as a project." David’s introducing a system, and in tough times, good systems are one of the things that help you live a better life, feel more in control, and get through this. Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez is the world expert on projects and project management. He’s written books, Harvard Business Review articles and is named as one of the Thinkers 50, the so-called “Oscars of management”. He really has been a champion forever in the argument that projects are the lingua franca of the business and personal worlds.  In our conversation we talk about the power of focus; the necessity of courage; why saying No is perhaps the ultimate project management hack; and how to avoid the swamps of project management where so many of us can get bogged down. In this episode, David Hall joins the show to talk about continuing education events. At first, David had significant “impostor syndrome”. However, he has come to realize that you do not need to be an expert to lead a training; you simply need to be an enthusiast of your topic. David explains some essential steps you need to take while planning your CE training, plus he describes some different ways you can profit from the event. Later, Gordon and David talk about the pros and cons of online courses. Meet David Hall Dr. Stephen “David” Hall heads up content and creative direction as the “Chief Maven” of PsychMaven. He began his work as a psychotherapist in 2005, and he currently holds clinical licenses in Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling. He has built up multiple counseling practices in his years as a clinician, first in Georgia and then in his home state of Tennessee. In 2015, he led the start-up of an independent psychiatry clinic, Haven Family Psychiatry, in Knoxville, TN. Dr. Hall maintains a psychotherapy caseload and supervises postgraduate therapists in the practice he leads in the clinic, Haven Counseling Center at Haven Family Psychiatry.  Impostor Syndrome   David says he would have started doing continuing education events earlier in his career. In David's mind, he needed enough credentials to do CE. David thought he needed to be an expert to lead a training. However, David now knows that you do not need to be an expert to train other people. The first paid CE event David put on was about ethics. He isn't an ethics expert, but he knew it would be a high-demand topic, so he was going to figure it out. David doesn't like to present himself as an expert; he wants to present himself as an enthusiast.   Starting a CE Event   There are a lot of different steps to holding a CE event. Figure out what the CE requirements are for your state. Some states are easier than others to get approval. David's first event involved getting his event approved for a pretty broad audience. The next step is figuring out where you are going to hold your event. Keep your costs as minimal as possible – it's effortless to overspend when putting events together. Remember that it does not have to be a significant event. You can do a ten-person event and still make money. David does a lot of direct mailings; there is a lot of expense in this. The reason David picked ethics because he knew it would have a big draw. What do people want to learn about? In the CE State Guide, there is a list of required topics.    Making Money from CE Events   There are lots of ways you can make money from CE events. The most obvious way is to charge for the event. The best place to start is by looking at the mailings you get. You will price the event based on how many CE hours it includes. Between $15 and $20 an hour is a good starting point. Plus, you can also lower the price for an early-bird special, then charge more once the event gets closer. Sponsorship is another way to make money from CE events. Affiliate marketing is another way to make money. You can recommend a subscription service or another course and become an affiliate with them. The rate can be up to 30%, and the revenue can even be reoccurring. If you do a CE event at cost, because of that, you deepen your reputation and get an extra five clients.   Presentation Space   When David travels, he likes to do talks in hotels. However, the cost can be high with hotel space and catering. In a church space, David can do way cheaper catering. Managing your expenses is the biggest thing you will have to worry about when holding a CE event. David thought he needed to “go big or go home.” Nobody told him that he could “go big and go home.” Start lean by keeping your expenses low, and you can always add to your events later on when you know what your audience responds to.   Online Courses   There's a lot of benefits to in-person events; the audience will have a significant commitment. Online, people are signing up and not attending. If you want CE events to be a steady source of income for you, then you should be doing both online and in-person events. The best way to build up your email list is by doing online events. If someone knows you, it's easier for them to buy your online product. However, if there is no relationship there, people will start to question if the product is legitimate. Plus, many states have limitations on how many online credits you can do. This is an episode of Crush It Mondays.  Each week, I'll bring to you an inspiring message, habit, or contemplation to get your week off to a powerful start.  In this week's episode, I want to talk about imposter syndrome. I'm sure most of you have heard this term before, but let's define it.  It's characterized by internally refusing to believe you are as good, accomplished, competent, or capable as others perceive you to be.  Basically, you feel like you're a fraud or that you just got lucky to get to be where you're at.  You won by accident or you were promoted by luck.  People with imposter syndrome tend to overwork themselves to ensure they are keeping up and have feelings of inferiority, even when others consider them experts.  What is dangerous about this way of thinking is that you are afraid to step off the hectic treadmill of hard work because you're afraid everything will fall apart.  People with imposter syndrome have a difficult time celebrating their success or accepting their achievements. If you recognize some of this behavior in yourself, how do you start improving on it?  First is to know that there are a ton of people that you look up to who also feel imposter syndrome- it's more common than you'd think!  In fact, it was reported that 70% of people experience Imposter Syndrome!  Show vulnerability.  Something that has been really helpful for me is showing vulnerability.  It's scary at first because you're putting it out there that you aren't as perfect as people think you are, that you make mistakes, that sometimes you don't know exactly what you're doing... but instead of others thinking - "oh! I knew that person as a phony!"  Chances are, they'll respect you even more.  It humanizes you, but that doesn't make you less than.  It also will help you practice more self-compassion when you feel like you can be yourself and show all parts of what you're doing, not just the highlight reel of your successes.  People want to share in the ups and downs of your journey and the downs don't make you an imposter. An example of a time I showed vulnerability when it truly scared me to do it was when I took a video of myself crying uncontrollably in the hardest race I had ever done to that date- the Yak Attack in Nepal. I did a TED Talk about it and how to define success in your life.   Putting a video online and later, in a TED Talk of me crying like this still makes my chest tighten.  Crying publicly and even in front of friends or family is something I do not do.  I've never wanted to share that side of me, but as terrifying as it was to share have this video live on the internet, it was amazing how powerful and impactful it was.  You gain strength and can positively impact others through vulnerability. If self-critical thoughts pop up and your imposter brain starts taking over, don't fight the thought.  Use the meditation technique of RAIN- Recognize, Allow, Investigate, Non-Identification.  Recognize it, take a moment to accept it and allow it to be there, ask yourself if it's really true and where you might feel it in your body, and last - say something to yourself like "this is just a thought, it is not me.  I'm separate from this thought. I'm okay.  It's okay." Be aware of when you are comparing yourself and it brings up feelings of inferiority.  Personally, this happens when I'm looking at social media.  I see people who seem to be racing more, training harder, better at promoting their podcast, or who seem to have it together more than me.  It feels icky when I look at it from an "I feel like I'm not enough because of this other person's post."  I don't always feel that way, but there are vulnerable moments throughout our day where a photo or video can impact us in different ways.  If I find myself looking at social media with my comparison lens, I make myself close the app.  Delete it for the day if you have to.  Use social media for inspiration and connection, not to measure your self-worth.  As Sharon Salzberg says, "Comparison is dangerous when you try to reference who you are compared to someone else's status or achievements."   Do you really need to work that hard and are you addicted to validation? This was a new concept I learned after reading upcoming podcast guest David Roche's article on TrailRunnerMag.com.  He talked about how imposter syndrome affects athletes.  He used examples of how overworking is due to insecurities- like overtraining in athletic endeavors or if you win, you think you just got lucky.  I also interpreted this article to imposter syndrome manifesting itself as workaholism in other areas.  It really resonated with me because I'm prone to overworking because I'm afraid I'll fall behind,  I feel like I'm not doing enough and if I stop I'll fall way behind, and then it'll just be proof to everyone around me that I'm actually not good enough.  It's been interesting to recognize in myself because I will confidently take on new roles (I did a career transition from having my Master's in Electrical Engineering to taking on a  large marketing role with no experience).  Same goes when people ask me how I became a speaker or a writer, or even an athlete- I just did it and didn't worry about the label, but imposter syndrome rears its head in the form of "I must work harder and continue to do more and more."  I truly worry about falling behind and even though this year, I've been really good at creating time to "do nothing," it still makes me feel anxious.  In David's article, he had two great reminders- "Growth happens in empty spaces" and " remember that there is no light at the end of the tunnel, just more tunnel."  There will be no endpoint... you can be world champion of your discipline, have accomplished more than you had ever dreamed, but it still won't feel like enough.  You can't outrun those feelings of not-enoughness by working hard or achieving more. Take it from me... hard life lesson I have to remind myself always. So if you feel sucked into the "I must achieve more or work harder to prove I'm good..." PAUSE.  Remind yourself that it won't help.  Ask yourself what is really important or introduce relationships or hobbies into your life that you don't use to validate yourself. Recognize a fixed mindset and perfectionist tendencies. Remember that you aren't born with a set amount of talent- that you can change.  Also realize that it's okay to ask for help, even if you're viewed as an expert. It's okay to say "I don't know." It's not proof that you aren't good at something- in fact, it shows the opposite. You're good at it because you are always willing to learn more. Some people will avoid tasks all together because they're afraid it'll be proof they aren't good enough.  This goes back to vulnerability- it doesn't mean you're a fraud if you don't know all the answers or need help.  It makes you even more real. Remember that you are not your career label, you are not your accomplishments, you are not defined by how fast you are.  You are awesome, loveable and amazing for the human being that you are, not for what you have achieved.  Achieving more will not make people love you more (something I struggle to remind myself!)  It's okay to have feelings of imposter syndrome, but by recognizing them, it'll help accept and move past it in the moment so you can internally remember that you are great no matter what. David Stein helps individuals to become more confident investors via audio, video, and books. For the past five years, he has hosted the weekly personal finance podcast, Money For the Rest of Us. The show has more than 250 episodes and more than 10 million downloads. David’s upcoming book, Money For the Rest of Us: 10 Questions to Master Successful Investing, will be published by McGraw-Hill in October 2019. Previously, David was chief investment strategist and chief portfolio strategist at Fund Evaluation Group a US$70 billion institutional investment advisory firm, where he co-headed the 21-person research group. David’s former institutional clients include The Texas A&M University System, the University of Puget Sound, and the Sierra Club Foundation. He lives in Phoenix and Idaho.   “And so I started trading and quickly found that it’s not that easy.” David Stein       Support our sponsor   Today’s episode is sponsored by the Women Building Wealth membership group, the complete proven step-by-step course to guide women from novice to competent investor. To learn more, visit: WomenBuildingWealth.net.         Worst investment ever David’s worst investment occurred during the transition period after he had quit the investment business and was trying to decide what he wanted to do in “retirement”. He had set up then shut down a few websites and had reached the point where he thought that even though he had retired, he could be a trader. He was experienced. At his prior firm, he was joint chief of investment researchers and money managers and trading was just part of what he and his team did, which included hedge funds and private equity. As his group’s head strategist, he would go to New York once a year and meet hedge fund managers, because he liked to see what they were thinking, to learn from their successes and mistakes and to see their take on the world. Visit to hedge fund piques interest in trading About a year or before he retired, he went to a commodities trading hedge housed in a Connecticut mansion. He met the founder and went to the trading floor. It grabbed his attention immediately. The floor was separated, with quantitative traders on one side and discretionary traders on the other. He said you could tell where the quants sat and where the discretionary traders say because the latter were messier and their desks less organized, but it looked like a fun and cool place to work. Then once he saw them at their desks trading, David got the idea that trading wasn’t that hard as he had had 15 years of investment experience. Trading turns out to be a lot harder than he had thought So a year after he quit his job, he decided to be a trader in commodity futures, currencies, options just to see how it would go. He knew enough to know that he would not be risking all his money into it, because he had known many people who had suffered huge losses in trading commodities. But he thought with his experience that he knew enough. He had economic models to use, and other investing tools, so he started trading and quite quickly found that it was not nearly as easy as he had suspected it would be. Some of the trades went well, and some didn’t. The problem he found mainly with commodities and foreign exchange (Forex), gold, silver, and other precious metals was the volatility. They trade almost 24 hours a day but it is extremely volatile, and there is no rhyme nor reason for that the volatility. Decides to stop trading but forgets to close one trade So he realized that there were things happening that were not at all like the investing he was used to. He had done fine, if fine is losing a little bit of money, but nevertheless he decided to stop trading. What he forgot was that he still had one trade in silver left open. It was a stop-buy order set up so that when silver fell to a certain price, the system would buy an open contract on silver that would go long on silver. He had neglected to close the position, so the trade went as intended: silver fell to the resistance point and the system trading bought him silver (set up to bet that silver would increase in value), but then silver kept falling. Before he realized what had happened, he had lost around US$25,000 in this particular silver contract. Good decisions are so due to processes not outcomes At this point in his story, David is reminded of Annie Duke, who in her book, Thinking in Bets, makes a distinction between decision outcomes and decision processes. A good decision, certainly a good investment decision, doesn’t happen because it has a good outcome, a good decision is the result of a good process, he related, para-phrasing Duke’s argument. He had not had a good process for buying commodity futures and trading because he didn’t understand what the market was like. He thought he knew enough about investing, how commodities work and economic trends, but he admits that he really didn’t. ‘You must know who’s buying or selling and the volume’ He also recalled a professional trader telling him that no one can successfully invest unless they have “border-flow information”. In other words, that the investor knows who’s buying, who’s selling, and how much they’re buying. Even today, the other thing one must ask when they invest: “Who’s on the other side of the trade?” “Who am I trading with?” Benjamin Graham wrote in his classic, The Intelligent Investor, that he was trading with individuals, and that most individual stocks were held by individuals, and so he could get some type of informational insight. In David’s commodities trading career, he said, he was up against institutions, and mostly quantitative “bots”, algorithms that can act very quickly. Sting comes from the fact he should have known better David also recalls a quote from The Wall Street Journal that if a hedge fund that trades in commodities thinks that their competitive edge is that they have a network of people who know what’s going on in terms of order flow, it’s a bit like saying you can deliver a package faster than Amazon. Like maybe you could at one point, but now you’re competing against robots, which excel extremely well in an environment in which there is no rhyme or reason to why things are moving. That’s what David learned. He came out of trading a little wiser, and kept his remaining $25,000. The sting certainly came from losing the money, but in some ways knowing that he should have known better stung more.   “(US$25,000) That’s not a huge loss, but it stung because of how I lost it. Annie Duke in her book, Thinking in Bets, distinguishes … a good investment decision isn’t so because it has a good outcome, a good decision is the result of a good process. And I did not have a good process for buying commodity futures and trading because I didn’t understand what the market was like.” David Stein   Some lessons No one should be trading commodity futures or Forex Such instruments are speculative - a speculation is when there is disagreement on whether the return will be positive or negative. Individuals should rather be focused on investing Investing has a positive expected return, with usually some income component or earnings component. The key is to focus on investing. It’s fine to have some diversification and speculative forays for hedging. But if individuals bet their retirement on trading, that’s insane, because it is purely speculative, and that means you have to get everything precisely right to make money.     Andrew’s takeaways What do you know that the market doesn’t know? Investors in individual stocks must ask themselves that crucial question. Most of the time, the answer is going to be: “Nothing!” It is insufficient to find a company or idea that you like; what is required is to find a company or an idea that you like that the market has failed to notice. Investing in commodities or Forex is extremely risky Such investing is tantamount to a bet against the balance sheet of the banks, a bet against the whims of politicians, and a bet against a central bank’s balance sheets. These factors are overpowering and can shift the market in a minute, which is frightening. When investing in forex, and something, you are definitely mean it, the Fed decides to do something, is there’s nothing you can do but respond to it. And that response may be that it crushes your portfolio. So is there anything you’d add to my takeaways from that?     Actionable advice Don’t be a trader But if you do, start off with a very small amount of money, and be prepared to lose it all, because trading is speculation. Use shadow portfolios, don’t risk real money Make sure you understand how it all works. Remember this too: If a person has or is a successful trader, they will not be teaching in a trading academy … they’ll either be working for hedge funds or they’re already retired and living on the beach somewhere. If someone is teaching other people how to trade, they are making their money teaching other people how to trade, they’re not making their money trading.     No. 1 goal for next the 12 months To sell enough books so he gets to write another one He enjoyed the writing process of taking five years of podcast episodes and distilling them into the best 60,000 words. McGraw Hill has given him an advance and he wants to go out to sell enough books that he can earn back his advance and do it again because it was fun to do.     Parting words “I just enjoyed being on your show. Happiness is unarguably considered one of the great aims of life. But finding happiness can be a frustrating and confusing process as there are numbers of philosophical pathways to get there. Martha Nussbaum and Amartya Sen's Capability Approach cuts through this confusion and offers a single way to ensure well-being for each and every person. On this episode we explore the Capability Approach and consider a way toward implementing it using a challenging philosophical thought problem.Instagram: @grandtheoriesTwitter: @grand_theoriesMusic: The following is utilized under a Creative Commons 4.0 License:1. Money Puzzle #7: Expensive Daily Habits That Don't Seem Expensive

Your Money Puzzle

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2019 17:53

We all have little daily or weekly habits that we spend money on in exchange for convenience or enjoyment. Personally, I like to eat out for lunch. I also like to wash my car (a lot), so 2-3 car washes a week isn’t unusual. You might like your daily Starbucks stop or a massage every other week. You know what those little habits are costing you in the short term but, whatever your little daily habits are, the real question is, how expensive are they in the long-term? ----more---- While I was preparing for this week’s show, I was listening to another podcast and the guest happened to be David Bach, author of the Automatic Millionaire, Smart Couples Finish Rich, and about 7 other best-sellers. He was traveling around the country, doing interviews in order to promote his newest book, The Latte Factor. The latte factor is a story about a woman who, basically, can’t get ahead financially because of her daily latte habit and, here’s the spoiler, if she redirected that money into herself instead of the lattes, voila, she can finally get ahead. In the long-term view of finances and money and planning, it really is the little things that add up to make big differences over time. I hate to break it to you, but chances are you will never get rich from winning the lottery or an inheritance from a long-lost wealthy uncle. For most of us, our future wealth is determined by what we do for ourselves, over the course of our lifetimes. This might seem a little bit depressing to some, but I like the idea that I control my future wealth and I can make choices to improve it. Especially if those choices are little and easy and can still make a big impact in my life and finances! Let’s look at some of the most common expensive daily habits that don’t seem expensive in the moment. David’s book brings up a great place to start, your lattes. In David’s story, his character is getting a latte and a muffin 6 days a week, at a cast of $7.00 per day. I know he’s trying to make a point in the book, but that seems a little excessive to me. But I do see people in my office showing up with a Starbucks cup in hand 3-4 times per week, every week, so let’s go with four lattes per week for our average. If you’re a nice person and you tip your barista, you’re probably spending $5 per drink x four drinks a week, or $20 a week. Add it up over the course of the year, and you’ll spend $1,040 on lattes. In the moment, $5 doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. Over the course of the year, $1,040 might not even seem like that big of a deal. But $5 isn’t the real cost. The real cost is what that $5 could have done if it was redirected to your future wealth. If you repeat this daily habit over the course of your working years (30 years), you will spend $31,200 on lattes. If you had moved those funds into an investment that averaged 7% per year, your $31k would be worth $98,239. Not bad, when you compound it over time! My big habit is eating out for lunch. I tell myself I’m too busy to grab some left-overs or make a sandwich but, truthfully, I’m just being lazy and taking the easy way out – going out and paying someone else for my lunch. Besides, “I work hard every day”, I tell myself, “I deserve to go out and be treated to this lunch.” Maybe I do deserve it, but what is it really costing me? If you’re eating a cheap lunch, you’re spending $7.50 a day s five days a week x 48 weeks per year (assuming you miss work here and there). That’s $1,800 per year on lunches. Add that money to your latte money and your investment account would grow to $202,146! These are two examples of expensive daily habits and, my guess, is that most people have 5-10 little, daily or weekly habits that they’re spending on. Because the numbers are small, we think they make a small difference in our future. But just like small hinges move big doors, small dollars make for big wealth over time. The key to most things in life going as they should, is being balanced – balanced nutrition, work/home life balance, financially balanced, etc. Financially balanced means you are not neglecting the future to spend all of your money on fun today, but you are also not neglecting today to save all of your money for the future. What daily habits do you have that add up to $100 a month? $200 a month? Can you make small sacrifices today for big rewards tomorrow by skinnying down a little from this habit and a little from that one to add up to $200 a month? I’m not giving up my lattes all together, I was actually AT the coffee shop when I was doing my research for this week’s episode. Then, I treated myself to a nice meal for lunch afterwards as a reward for my hard work! But we can all be a little more balanced. If you’d like to see what a little here and a little there can do for your future, we’ve actually got some great calculators on my office website – www.robertedgin.com. Click on resources, then calculators, and choose the savings accumulation calculator and you can check some numbers for yourself! I’d love to hear about your most expensive daily habit AND how you plan on redirecting that money. In this interview he powerfully articulates that what we take into our bodies can have a lasting effect and of the necessity and urgency to clean up our act - is an imperative.   The old adage that ‘the greatest pollution we face is that which is between our ears’ - ‘is our thought process’ and that the sooner we recognise our situation, the sooner we will be able to clean up both our inner and outer world. David is touring NZ over the next few months to share with all concerned the latest knowledge on natural ways to regain optimum health and remain that way for the rest of our life. Some important tips and reminders are: Organic food, especially veggies and fruit is exceptionally important. No Fizzy drinks for children. Kamboucha*  Tea is OK. *Sugar is dangerous. Fasting for adults is good for us all. Watermelon juice fast – detox your kidneys as it is alkalising. Rehydration is important as forty year olds and older are seriously dehydrated. 90% of David’s patients are dehydrated. He has machines that test for this . Do not drink chlorinated fluoridated ‘tap water.’ Electronic Devices – don‘t use them before bed. Turn your wifi router off at night before you go to bed. David calls this sleep hygiene. A good 7-8-9 hours every night. Naturopaths in NZ devote 2 years to nutritional knowledge and if you get less than 70% in your exams you have to sit the entire course again. Whilst MD’s in University have only 3 hours on nutrition, if they miss those lecture they do not need to repeat that lecture. Which clearly shows that food and nutrition are not a priority. Aging gracefully Every generation we are extending our life span by 5 years … Zinc is crucial especially for men. Pumpkin seeds are important. 5 G wireless mobile phone clarion call. Nine ways 5G and the IoT will harm humans, the environment, and Earth   IOT ( the Internet of Things)   Health – The robust and growing independent science shows harm to our health from microwave radiation Privacy – The invasion of our privacy from the collection and mining of our digital data Cyber Security -The fast growing and devastating cyber security risks Environment – The harms to wildlife, particularly bees, butterflies and other pollinators Energy – The huge energy consumption to produce and power a wireless Internet of Things Brains and Humanity – The effects on our brains and humanity from humans increasingly inhabiting the cyber world E-Waste – The astronomical e-waste that will be generated from connecting virtually every “thing” to the Internet Conflict Minerals – 5G and the IoT will vastly grow our dependence on conflict minerals, which have brought about the death of close to 6 million people in poor countries eg Congo. Ethics — Ethical issues arising from the IoT.  New human rights laws are being being considered; how should humans relate to robots and AI?  The blurring of what was once a clear   NB: If you need information specific to the proposed NZ 5G system it is summarised at this link: http://www.5g.org.nz/2018/10/11/facts-about-5g-in-nz/ 2019 NZ Wellness & Anti-Ageing Health Plan launch & Biomat Tour Feb-March 2019: Proposed dates - changes may be made all number dependant, (minimum 20 people per talk to hire a hall) NB all talks are 7-10pm, 120 min PP presentation with DH and 30 mins presentation from Dianne Keen with a cuppa herbal tea afterwards other speakers by arrangement. $25 at the door, $20 pre booked on Eventbrite pages to be linked to this here: Queenstown Monday 25th Feb 7-9pm – St Johns Ambulance Hall, Frankton, Queenstown Christchurch Wednesday 27th Feb 7-9pm – Avebury House, Richmond, Christchurch Wellington Monday 1st March 7-9pm – Quakers Hall, Moncrieff Street, Mt Victoria, Wgtn City Auckland North Shore Monday 4th March – Browns Bay Community Hall, Sherwood Room, Browns Bay Auckland East Wednesday 6th March 7-9pm – Anchorage Park Community House, Pakuranga Auckland Central Friday 8th March 7-9pm – Ferndale House, Pink Room, Mt Albert Kerikeri Monday 11th March 7-9pm – Turners Centre, Kerikeri central New Plymouth Monday 18th March (after WOMAD) – venue to be advised Waiheke Island Thursday 21st March 7-9pm – Waiheke Sustainability Centre, (ex Bowling Club) Mako St, Oneroa In this ground breaking 120 minute presentation David has mapped out and distilled his 30 years of clinical practice into an easy to understand Strategic Wellness, Health & Anti-Ageing Plan designed to help you live longer, healthier and reach your wellness goals faster than ever before. It’s another great day on the Healthpreneur podcast! Today’s special because we are speaking with one of our clients for a new installment to our show. We’re doing this to give you a sense of what goes on behind the scenes, so you can see exactly how we help our clients improve their offering and business model. David Zachary is an ADHD coach and transforms lives through addressing what people eat, how they sleep, what they think, and how they move their bodies. He has flushed out the four main processes he teaches his clients, and through that, is working on creating a curriculum. Depending on the kind of business you have, it may be difficult for you to keep a linear or standardized curriculum. In David’s case, his clients come in with varying test results, so his clients must begin on different levels. Tune in to hear us navigate through David’s questions and see how you could implement these ideas in your business, too.   In this episode, David and I discuss: Finding your process and organizing it. How he helps his clients. Creating a “dream come true system”. A linear versus genius model. Finding the fundamentals of your training. Visualizing the framework of your content. What does a real man look like? What are the attributes of manliness? Every generation has had its own list but, for the most part, those lists almost always include a rugged independence, the search for power, a need for control, bravery in the face of danger, and a pull-yourself-up-by-your-own-bootstraps mentality. But when David prepared to hand over his kingdom to his son, Solomon, he shared some dramatically different concepts about manliness and manhood. In David’s mind, a real man was a godly man. He had a heart for God and willingness to submit to the will of God, no matter what. Rather than pridefully independent, he would be humbly dependent upon God. He would recognize that his strength came from God and his life was to bring glory and honor to God. Like any father, David wanted to see his son succeed in life, but he knew that the key to that happening was directly tied to Solomon’s reliance upon God.

After a brief hiatus we're back with a brand new episode. For most buyers, without previous experience in construction, knowing what to look out for when buying a property can be quite daunting. This week on Escrow Out Loud, our San Francisco Real Estate podcast, we talk to David Milne from Arch Home Inspections about the importance of home inspection.[01:32] Why is it important for everyone to have a home inspection when buying a property? What it really comes down to is gathering information on the condition of the property, so that you can make the best decision going in. David explains there are normally two reports; one is a termite/pest inspection and the other is a contractor report which David would provide. A typical contractor's home inspection report includes everything from the foundations, exterior covering, roof condition, drainage conditions, water, the three utilities, water heater and heat system as well as looking for any alarm bells inside the building. Because a home inspection isn't really designed to cover appliances, David recommends people also consider a home warranty.[05:17] The pest control inspectors are governed by a board that oversees them but in California there is no licensing for home inspection. What they do have is organizations such as ASHI and CREIA that provide governing standards to follow. What does home code compliance actually mean and how does it change over time?[09:58] Since home inspectors are not regulated we should consider what the inspector's background is when choosing a good one. In David’s case experience in construction and working as a high-end trim installer made him an ideal fit for a career in home inspection.[12:15] The process of home inspection can be an emotional and stressful process for everyone involved. For David his favorite inspectins are when dealing with first time buyers. He shares his favorite stories and explains how his approach is to reassure and relax them.[14:14] Whether he is working with sellers, agents or buyers, David always aims to tell it as it is, without embellishing or leaning towards either side. A part of his job is to deal with objections and the best way he found to deal with this aspect of his job is to keep an open dialogue with people. He recommends that people talk to different contractors if they are not satisfied with the advice they are getting. A good rule of thumb to follow is that if you are hearing similar advice from different people, you are on the right track.[19:55] Property prices keep climbing in San Francisco and have come a long way in recent years. This means that, proportionally, the major systems and structures cost less to fix now days. Changing the foundation now costs just 5% of the purchase price and is not as relatively daunting.[22:02] Before beginning his inspection, David likes to ask people what their plans for the property are and advise them accordingly. Most of San Francisco is old and built with old redwood which is great quality. How is the newer construction different? Finally, what to do with old foundations and why it is a good idea to bundle your projects to get the best bang for your buck!Thank you for joining us for this week’s episode. We hope you enjoyed tuning in and join us again next week for part two of our interview with David! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In David and Jason's latest vinously-centric podcast, Jason makes a case for the viola of the wine world, rosé wine... well, just under half a case, actually, with five sumptuous rosés across the full spectrum of pinks from 'ballet pump' to 'terracotta.' First off is Yapp's own label rosé from the Ardèche, a mid-weight, low-budget, easy access offering under even easier screw cap. Next, a barely rosé 2017 Reuilly, as delightful as it is hard to pronounce; nutty, rosehipped and traditionally drunk with oysters. Third up, is a big favourite of David's, a proper pink, limpid-robed Menetou Salon, that he recently had the audacity to pair with a lightly-spiced Thai curry. Fourth, is from one of Jason's favourite estates in Corsica. Made from a blend of vermentino, sciacarello and neilluccio grapes, this coral pink rosé from Domaine Saparale is loaded with wild herbs, which after just one sip, Jason claims is crying out for fleshy fish and crustacea. Last of all, a truly magisterial wine from France's only exclusively rosé appellation: Tavel. This full-throttle, oenologically abundant wine is blended from no less than seven grapes and has Jason edging towards grilled red meat, whilst David edges towards the remainder of the bottle. Cheers!

Anytime we begin to talk about a personal network, there are people in the conversation who break out in a cold sweat. That's because they have been given advice about networking and tried to apply it and the results were less than stellar. In fact, many of us have very sour taste in our mouths because of the miserable networking advice we've tried to apply. My guest on this episode of the podcast, Dr. David Burkus has written a new book entitled, “Friend of a Friend.” It's his remarkable attempt to examine the actual research that exists about how networks actually work. It's not a collection of anecdotes crammed into short chapters of pithy advice, it is actual data that explains how networks operate and debunks the myths about personal networks many of us believe. Listen to this fascinating conversation and you will learn how to make better use of your personal network. Why you need to understand the network you are actually in and act accordingly Most of the books you read or advice you hear about the topic of networking are based on first-hand accounts and experiences. My guest today, Dr. David Burkus points out that that is a dataset of one. It's not a very reliable source of knowing what is normally true in most cases. He suggests that we look at the actual research that's been done about how personal networks operate to better understand best practices. He says understanding networks is not the issue, but understanding the actual network you are a part of is the real key. In our conversation, he outlines some of the things you need to consider about your personal network in order to make the best decisions about how you should interact with people within it. It's a valuable conversation you won't want to miss. Do you know how to make your personal network work for you AND for others? We often think of networking from the perspective of what we can get out of it. Surely, there is an aspect in which we want to benefit from the relationships we invest in, but that benefit usually comes from being a giver, not a taker. David Burkus explains that it is important for us to take the time to understand our network in all of its intricacies and nuances so that we can better respond to the people we correspond with and know - in ways that actually benefit them and us at the same time. You'll find out how David recommends you do that, on this episode. What are the best-practices to effectively leverage your digital network connections? One of the promises that social media made in its beginning days was that we would be able to build our personal networks faster and more deeply as a result of using social media. David Burkus says that is only partly true. We are able to carry on conversations and discover things about the people with internet with through social media, but very seldom does that interaction take the place of real, face-to-face relationships. David explains how we can make good use of social media to build existing relationships and why it's often necessary to organize face-to-face meetings in addition to the social media interactions we have on a day-to-day basis. Networking tip: Don’t ask a friend for an introduction to one of their friends One of the things I was curious to receive David's thoughts about was how he recommends a person should go about asking for an introduction from one of their friends. His answer: Don’t. In David's view, that approach puts the friend in a position that is uncomfortable for them at the least and potentially dangerous to their relationship with the person you want the introduction to, at the worst. He has a better idea: inquire broadly throughout your network for people who specialize in the areas you're focused on at that time. The responses you get will be generous, eager, and much more helpful than pursuing the one person you think you really need to meet. David has a great deal of practical advice like this to share, all based on research. You can hear it on this episode. #187 Why opportunity costs should be our primary frame for deciding what to buy instead of anchoring, mental accounting or whether we pay with a credit card or cash. More information, including show notes, can be found here. Episode SummaryWhen David noticed that a new book by Dr. Dan Ariely and Jeff Kreisler was actually titled, “Dollars and Sense,” he couldn’t believe his eyes. That’s one of the most tired and overused phrases when it comes to financial writing and publication. Yet, there it was, a best seller on Amazon. The title wasn’t enough to keep him from reading the book and he’s very glad that he did. This episode highlights some of the concepts expressed in the book including the difference between investment and speculation, what it means to do malleable mental accounting (which is not a good thing), and why we need to consider opportunity costs when making purchases. If you want to have sense in the way you use your dollars, this episode is for you. This episode is about spending dollars while maintaining your common sense… and why many of us are not able to do itAll of us fall into strange patterns of behavior when it comes to spending money. We can either be far too stingy and refuse to spend money for things we legitimately need, or we can convince ourselves that a purchase we desire to make is for our good or in our best interest when the facts reveal something different. David has a great way of explaining why those kinds of things happen and on this episode uses his own back and forth experience when buying furniture to demonstrate the good, the bad, and the expensive of making purchases for both good and bad reasons.Be careful that you don’t convince yourself that a purchase is an investment when it’s really nothing more than speculationAs David and his wife were shopping for furniture they came across many beautiful but expensive antique pieces. The outcome of their furniture shopping is quite ironic because David started out feeling a bit of pain about having to spend money at all – and he wound up purchasing some of the most expensive pieces they found in their shopping adventure. How did it happen? One of the ways was that David convinced himself that the purchase of antiques was actually an investment because the value was likely to increase over the years. But according to all rational definitions, that is not investing, it is speculating.Malleable mental accounting: How you convince yourself to spend money for reasons you never intendedIf you want to truly use common sense when spending your dollars, you need to understand a phenomenon called malleable mental accounting. It describes the way we convince ourselves that a purchase makes sense when it actually doesn’t make sense according to the budget. It’s a way we justify or convince ourselves that the purchase we are making is a good one when actually it may not look good on paper at all. Find out how David struggled with his own form of malleable mental accounting when he and his wife were purchasing furniture for their new home. Are you aware of your own confirmation bias? If you can be you will grow in your ability to change your decision making for the betterMany times after we make a purchase, we begin searching for ways to convince ourselves that it was actually a smart decision. In David’s case, he began researching the price of antique furniture similar to what he had purchased in an effort to show that he did not spend as much money as he could have, and to that end he was successful. But that’s not the point. What he was doing had nothing to do with whether or not his furniture purchase was truly a good decision, it had to do with making himself feel better about the large amounts of money he had spent. David contention is this: If we can become aware of the reasons we spend money the way we do, we can begin to change our decision-making for the better. That’s the lesson David wants to teach you through his own furniture buying experience. In This Episode You’ll Learn[0:18] Dollars and Sense – isn’t that the most “typical” and uncreative title – yet there are MANY books by that name[2:38] How furniture illustrates how irrelevant anchoring can influence decisions wrongly[8:30] Weighing opportunity costs instead of getting anchored to a number[11:49] Why we should not consider sales prices or source of funds, or ease of payment[18:00] Is an antique furniture purchase an investment? No, it’s speculation.[22:21] How credit cards seduce us to purchase things when we normally wouldn’t[25:16] Are you aware of your own confirmation bias?

He is the author of Surviving Wounded Knee: The Lakotas and the Politics of Memory (Oxford, 2016), which was named a Choice Outstanding Academic Title and was awarded the Robert M. Utley Prize from the Western History Association. David worked five years as a research assistant for the Joseph Smith Papers while a student at BYU and has spent the last four and a half years as a volume editor. In David’s work for the project, he specializes in the Mormon experience in Missouri, Mormon-Indian relations, and Joseph Smith’s legal papers. In this episode, LDS Perspectives podcaster Taunalyn Rutherford interviews David about the latest volume in the Joseph Smith Papers—Documents, Volume 6—which covers February 1838–August 1839. This was a tumultuous period in the life of Joseph Smith and the history of the church, marked by internal dissent, the abandonment of Kirtland, Ohio, as church headquarters, the outbreak of violence with anti-Mormons in Missouri, the emergence of the Danite Society, the Missouri-Mormon War, Governor Lilburn W. Boggs’s infamous “extermination order,” Joseph Smith’s imprisonment in Liberty, Missouri, and the exodus and relocation of the Saints to Illinois. This was also a time characterized by spiritual outpourings and revelation, with the Prophet dictating D&C 115–120, writing the letters that included D&C 121–123, and delivering several doctrinally-rich discourses to the Twelve Apostles as they prepared for their mission to England. Taunalyn and David review this history in detail and the documents published in the volume. David also discusses his “Joseph Smith’s Missouri Prison Letters and the Mormon Textual Community,” an essay that will be published in Foundational Texts of Mormonism: Examining Major Early Sources in February 2018 from Oxford University Press. The book is edited by Joseph Smith Papers scholars Mark Ashurst-McGee, Robin Scott Jensen, and Sharalyn D. Howcroft. David’s chapter grew out of research conducted while editing the extant letters composed by Joseph Smith to church members while he was in Missouri state custody for Documents, Volume 6. The essay provides a fine-grained analysis of the prophet’s approach to writing the letters. While in state custody, Joseph wrote five handwritten missives for his wife, Emma Smith. Relying on scribes, Joseph also composed three general epistles addressed to the church as a whole. David places Joseph’s letters in conversation with other famous “prison letters” written by the Apostle Paul, Protestant and Catholic prisoners during the Reformation, and Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights Movement. David concludes that while Joseph Smith’s focus on the meaning of suffering was similar to the other letter writers, the prophet differed from the others by connecting suffering with divine revelation. David concludes that while Joseph Smith’s focus on the meaning of suffering was similar to the other letter writers, the prophet differed from the others by connecting suffering with divine revelation. This week Shawn talked about the biblical and historical account of what we would all categorize as an impossible fight. On the surface we see the story of a young shepherd boy as a physical fight, which it was, but it was much more than that. It was a spiritual fight and the victor of that fight was God. Only the Lord can save, it was never about the spears or swords, but about our faith of the God who is with us. In David's eyes, he wasn't alone in the fight, it was God who would defeat Goliath. But it was David's faith that led him onto that battlefield.

Why? Because, when we turn our back, we are disobeying our leading AND our Leader. We are not taking action. There is a triangular stratagem that your enemy, Satan, has devised to throw you off course. At some time in your life you may experience these: fear, shame and mental oppression. Maybe all-at-once. We will not see real miracles unless we put ourselves in a position in which God can work for us. God works in the area of the impossible. What is impossible with men is possible with God. You may not need direction . . . you may just need to go forward. __________________________________________________ DEFEATING THE TRIANGLE OF LOSSYOU CAN GET BACK UP~ A MIRACLE PODCAST PRODUCTION ~ The enemy of your soul has many tools in his bag. However, there is a favorite of his: it is the "Triangle of Loss." His favorite ... and most successful ... attacks are as follows: Fear, Shame and Mental Oppression. And, sometimes he likes to use all three of them at the same time. The purpose of this podcast teaching is to help YOU discern and defeat this triangle of loss. There is an old saying, "You are as others see you." The devil knows if you have FEAR in your heart. If you do, ask God to help you: to take the fear away. King David said, "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee (the LORD)." [Psalm 56:3] Go to the Word of God and RECEIVE BY FAITH the power promised in the scriptures, such as: "For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." [2 Timothy 1:7] Fear is a spirit; therefore, you must speak to it. God is love and He is spirit. Love is stronger than fear. Perfect love casts out fear. "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear: because fear has torment. He that fears is not made perfect in love." [1 John 4:18] If you are afraid of someone, ask God to give you His love for them. You can bind fear in the name of Jesus, and cast it away from you. Command it to leave, and use the name of Jesus against it. Speak (declare) the BLOOD of Messiah Jesus against it. It is your responsibility to overcome fear. SERIOUS cases of fear require four (4) steps: A stayed (fixed) mind. Confession of God's Word [1 John 4:18; James 4:7; and 2 Timothy 1:7]. A step of faith . . . action. Speak to fear and take authority over it. Intercession and spiritual warfare (for others or one's self). __________________________________________________ IMPORTANT THE REASON FOR THIS ATTACK OF FEAR IS TO GET YOU TO STOP ACTION _____________________________________________ The enemy's chief concern is that you STOP doing what you are currently involved in doing. You have been TOO SUCCESSFUL; also, your plans for future endeavors are causing him to freak out. The devil is the most frustrated person in the world today; he knows that his time is running out. When the fullness of the Gentiles takes place, then all Israel (the nation as a whole) will be saved. [Romans 11] SunTzu, in his book, The Art of War, says "Every battle is won before it is fought." How true in Christian warfare: even the whole war is won because of the victory of our Lord Messiah Jesus. His death, burial, and resurrection conquered the enemy and bought our freedom and eternal life. Now . . . we take ACTION on that victory by appropriating it in faith as we move forward. Another weapon in the arsenal of the enemy, in addition to fear, is shame. The enemy will try to attack you with imposed shame. Lots of times, the enemy will attack even seasoned warriors with imposed shame from family members or friends as a result of some "slip up" from the past. There are many examples of shame experienced by people of God in the Bible. None of us are perfect: that's why we need a Savior! Abraham (the same as) sold his wife two times. Moses killed a man in anger. David committed adultery and murder. Peter denied Messiah three times in one night. We see that Adam's shame was manifested in hiding. In Revelation 3:18, Jesus admonished the Church at Laodicea to ". . . buy of me white raiment, that you may be clothed, [so] that the shame of our nakedness does not appear . . ." There are several types of shame: Adamic shame Inherited shame Actual shame Imposed shame Every one of these types of shame may be remitted, or canceled, by the atonement of Messiah Jesus. The BLOOD of Messiah paid for you and your sins, and provides healing for shame. The verdict of guilt, whether real or imagined, is shame. It may be something inherited from Adam (who brought sin into the world as the federal head of the race); or it may be something inherited from ancestral, or family lines. It may be actual shame, resulting from an action you have initiated. And . . . it may be psychological shame . . . real or false shame that people or demon spirits have tried to impose upon you, resulting in oppression, rejection, physical or mental sickness, and lack of production. Jesus the Messiah bore your shame. Hebrews 12:2 tells us that our Lord Jesus despised the shame of the cross and his nakedness thereon, but went through it because of the JOY set before Him: that is, he saw YOU able to be made whole and to know God, with your sins forgiven and having eternal life, as the result of His sacrifice. Jesus despised shame . . . and He despises it in YOUR life. He died for YOU so that you do NOT have to carry shame. He carried it for YOU! He is alive to remit guilt and its resultant shame from your life today. You can appropriate the healing in His shed BLOOD for you by calling on Him today. Pray and ask Him to deliver you. You can get back up . . . because He got back up! The Master has need of you in these last days. Along with fear and imposed shame, the enemy will also, at times, try to attack the seasoned warrior of Christ with mental oppression. Again, I have some Good News for you. Oppression - both mental and physical - are included in Messiah's work FOR US. Messiah was driven; he was abased and looked down upon. Isaiah 53:7 says, "He was oppressed and he was afflicted . . ." The Hebrew word for "oppress" [nagas] in this passage means "to drive, to harass, to tyrannize, to oppress." The original word used for "afflicted" [anah] means "to look down upon, depress, abase, humble." Messiah was driven; he was abased and looked down upon. In Isaiah 53:4, where it reads, " . . . he carried our pains," the literal Hebrew meaning is "acute pain; intense suffering: MENTAL or PHYSICAL." In Psalm 41, a Psalm of David written 1,000 years before Messiah Jesus, Kind David writes, "LORD, be merciful unto me: heal my soul, for I have sinned against you." [Verse 4] The Hebrew word here used for "soul" is "nephesh" which refers to not only the mind, but also the heart: healing for the intellect, the emotion, and the will, as well as the body. Jesus "carried" sickness, sin, disease, poverty and oppression - the "works" of the devil (Satan) - FOR YOU! Now . . . YOU don't have to carry them any longer! They do NOT belong to the believer in Jesus the Messiah! Jesus healed the separation between God and man through His work (the atonement) FOR US, and therefore ended Satan's dominion over ALL who would trust in Messiah. "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might DESTROY the works of the devil." [1 John 3:8] Action, including intercession, is the key thing Satan is afraid of in your life and ministry. He has to STOP your action. But he can't if you do NOT let him! "The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force." [Matthew 11:12] The Greek word for "violent" here used is "biastes" and means a "forcer" or "one who is energetic." The devil is AFRAID of your ENERGY directed towards the kingdom! Follow this model: Effort, energy, enthusiasm. Notice that most of the attacks Satan makes against you are in the realm of the mind through lies: telling you that you are ill, weak, going to die . . . or using imposed shame, fear, or discouragement. This is why you must be proactive and DECLARE the BLOOD of Christ over your body, mind, soul and spirit each day. (This way, even your emotions are covered.) It's interesting to note that one of the names of the devil is "Beelzebub." The original Hebrew name means "Lord of the flies" and was the name of a Philistine [Palestinian] god. It was a "dung god" . . . a "manure god." What a wonderful title for Satan: "Lord of the maggots . . . the manure god!" Dead blood draws flies. GOOD NEWS! The BLOOD of Jesus repulses Satan and his demons. Speak the BLOOD over your home and family. Just as the Israelites applied the BLOOD to their doors so that the death angel would pass over [Exodus 12], so you can apply the BLOOD of Christ over your family and home by speaking it in faith over them. Declare the BLOOD of Messiah Jesus over your loved ones daily and over all that God has given you by birth, adoption, or assignment! In case you ever become . . . or have already been . . . a victim of any of these attacks of Satan, and have suffered loss of spiritual or physical dominion, I have again some Good News for you. What has caused you to suffer loss: Sin? Disobedience? Bad decision? Attack from the enemy? Whatever it was, God CAN turn the situation around for you. God WANTS to turn it around for you! There are FOUR (4) major points to consider for recovering your loss: 1. Realize there is a turning point - a good future. (Remember King David.) 2. Do what God tells you to do. Pray, listen, and obey. 3. Make your past glorify God. 4. Go forward. OTHER SCRIPTURES RELATED TO RECOVERING YOUR LOSSES "So I will restore to you the years . . . the locust [the enemy] has eaten. You will eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; My people will never be put to shame." [Joel 2:25-26] "As for you also, because of the blood of your covenant, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope. Even today, I declare that I will restore DOUBLE to you." [ Zechariah 9:11-12] "Instead of your shame you will have DOUBLE honor, and instead of confusion they will rejoice in their portion. Therefore, in their land they will possess DOUBLE." [Isaiah 61:7] "I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they will increase and bear young [be fruitful]; I will make you inhabited as in former times, and do better for you than at your beginnings. Then you will know that I am the LORD." [Ezekiel 36:11] "And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning." [Job 42:10,12] YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A WONDERFUL FUTURE!!! Remember that ACTION keeps you under the anointing so that you are as a new, sharp threshing instrument. Knowing that the enemy's KEY INTENTION is to STOP your action, you now have military intelligence as to his plans. Your main focus NOW should be on developing a spirit of excellence in your action. That's what The University of Excellence is about. There are SEVEN (7) things you need to cultivate a spirit of excellence: [1] VISION Spend time with God. Pray and fast for: A fresh vision, and, A prophetic anointing. [2] DETERMINATION You need "bulldog" endurance and perseverance. You can't be a "pansy" and you can't be a quitter. Be a warrior and remember: "If you don't quit, you will win!" (But if you quit, you can't win!) [3] PRIORITIES You need to put God's program FIRST in life. He will show you when you need to spend time for family, for recreation, and for fellowship. At times, He may have you spend LOTS of time on family, recreation, and fellowship. But don't try to replace God's Kingdom as your top priority. "You seek first the kingdom of God, and all things will be added unto you." [Matthew 6:33] [4] ACCOUNTABILITY Accountability will give you real liberty. You need to be accountable to: Jesus, the Great Pastor, and, Others, in ministry. [5] REST You need to rest one day a week. This is God's plan and is necessary for your overall long-term health and blessing. At times, He may lead you to take extended periods of rest. Always obey Him in these matters. He knows what is best for you . . . and for those to whom you minister. You can't minister effectively if you're worn out or burnt out! "For thus says the LORD God, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest you will be saved; in quietness and confidence will be your strength." [Isaiah 30:15] Honoring and keeping the Sabbath will also enable you to appropriate the rewards of a spirit of EXCELLENCE: delight, dominion, and desires granted. [Isaiah 58:13-14] You can't minister effectively if you're worn out or burnt out! Here is some help for you: Healing Through Rest. [6] A HEART FOR GOD The prophet Samuel said, "the LORD has sought him a man after his own heart," describing King David. [1 Samuel 13:14] After being anointed, and successful as a king and military leader . . . the champion of the people . . . King David, sinned greatly. Even in the midst of his sin, he had a heart toward God, which caused him to repent. He paid dearly for his sin, but even in the midst of his sin, he loved God and was repentant. In all his public official conduct he acted according to the Divine mind, and fulfilled the will of his Maker: thus was he a man after God's own heart. In reference to his private or personal moral conduct, the word is never used. So what was his problem? Why did David sin? The answer is: He didn't FEAR God. He loved God, but He didn't fear Him at the time of his great sin! We need to be not only morally reverent towards God, but also to have a sense of alarm that will keep us from walking off the path of righteousness. We need to think ahead of time about the consequences of our sin and transgression. Our Father in Heaven loves us too much to let us get away with such behavior. There is not much preaching on holiness anymore. We need to LOVE GOD and to FEAR GOD; then we will have a heart for God. In David's rulership of the Kingdom, in his official conduct, he fulfilled the will of God; however, in his private life and personal conduct he failed miserably . . . but then repented. This brings to light THREE very important things to consider: Your actions can bring reproach on God, yourself, your family, your friends, your nation, and your cause. Your actions can give your enemies occasion to slander you and also mock the God you are supposed to be serving. Your actions can bring severe judgment upon you and your family. In the heat of temptation you need to consider these things. Are you willing to pay the price? Do you LOVE God and your family enough to protect them from the results of your sin? Do you FEAR God enough to prohibit you from doing the thing(s) you are considering? [7] INTEGRITY Honesty and moral uprightness are the KEY INDICATORS of the God shaped life. The deeper your character . . . the greater your impact! Many things that we question in life, even small things, are a TEST of our integrity. God is constantly testing us to see if we can be entrusted with greater giftings, talents, skills, and responsibilities. Integrity is a two edged sword. It is an instrument of blessing: For ourselves -- We must live with ourselves in all good conscience. "For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved if our heart condemn us not, then we have confidence toward God." [1 John 3:20-21] This assures us of answered prayer and provision. "And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight." [Verse 22] For others -- Our families, our friends, our parishioners, our communities . . . our progeny . . . all are impacted by our integrity. The quality of our life is a direct antecedent of the same. The degree of EXCELLENCE of your life and ministry predetermines your future and many times, the future of those to whom you minister and love. Your integrity and faithfulness here on Planet Earth will also predetermine your future in the Millennial Kingdom with Messiah. Your position in the Kingdom and your assignment will be determined by the EXCELLENCE of your integrity and faithfulness here on earth. So ... now you know HOW to defeat the triangle of loss―fear, shame and mental oppression―the triple trick of the devil to steal your productivity and joy. Now ... you can fulfill your purpose in life: and be productive in the desires God Almighty has placed in your heart. LIVE A LIFE OF EXCELLENCE! We are still on our Journey and are on week 13 talking about 1 Chronicles. The first 9 chapters of 1 Chronicles are dedicated to lists and genealogies. Further lists and genealogies are scattered throughout the rest of 1 Chronicles. In between, the Book of 1 Chronicles records David's ascension to the throne and his actions thereafter. The book concludes with David's son Solomon becoming King of Israel. Briefly outlined, the Book of 1 Chronicles is as follows: Chapters 1:1-9:23 - Selective Genealogies; Chapters 9:24-12:40 - David’s ascent; Chapters 13:1-20:30 -David’s reign. In David’s song of thanksgiving to God in 1 Chronicles 16:33, he refers to the time when God will come “to judge the earth.” This foreshadows Matthew 25, in which Jesus describes the time when He will come to judge the earth. Through the parables of the ten virgins and the talents, He warns that those who are found without the blood of Christ covering their sins will be cast into “outer darkness.” He encourages His people to be ready because when He comes, He will separate the sheep from the goats in judgment. Part of the Davidic Covenant which God reiterates in chapter 17 refers to the future Messiah who would be a descendant of David. Verses 13-14 describe the Son who will be established in God’s house and whose throne will be established forever. This can only refer to Jesus Christ.Genealogies such as the ones in 1 Chronicles may seem dry to us, but they remind us that God knows each of His children personally, even down to the number of hairs on our heads (Matthew 10:30). We can take comfort in the fact that who we are and what we do is written forever in God’s mind. If we belong to Christ, our names are written forever in the Lamb’s book of Life (Revelation 13:8). God is faithful to His people and keeps His promises. In the Book of 1 Chronicles, we see the fulfillment of God’s promise to David when he is made king over all Israel (1 Chronicles 11:1-3). We can be sure that His promises to us will be fulfilled as well. He has promised blessings to those who follow Him, who come to Christ in repentance, and who obey His Word. Obedience brings blessing; disobedience brings judgment. The Book of 1 Chronicles, as well as 1 & 2 Samuel and 1 & 2 Kings, is a chronicle of the pattern of sin, repentance, forgiveness, and restoration of the nation of Israel. In the same way, God is patient with us and forgives our sin when we come to Him in true repentance (1 John 1:9). We can take comfort in the fact that He hears our prayer of sorrow, forgives our sin, restores us to fellowship with Him, and sets us on the path to joy.

This Episode’s Focus on Strengths This episode will energize and encourage you to take a big leap toward living the life you truly want to live. Lisa speaks with David Ralph, a man who ditched the corporate life, took that leap, and is now living a life that he loves (and it meant he went from working a mandatory 8 hours every day to working for a few hours at tasks he loves). And, he tells us about how he used his strengths to make it all happen. This is a great episode, especially for those of you who have always been searching for that elusive Passion Pot of Gold. David points out that it’s not something that’s just going to appear; you need to go out there and do something to reach the life you want. David keeps in mind his Top 5 Talent Themes from the Clifton StrengthsFinder: Futuristic, Maximizer, Belief, Positivity, and Activator. You’ll hear how his Maximizer talent has impacted his life, and how he’s learned to use his Activator talent to get stuff done.   What You’ll Learn David tells us his story, and how he got to where he is today. Along the way, he gives these sage pieces of advice: Be where people give you kudos for the good things you do. When he was in the corporate world, David realized that no one told him when he did the good things, they only commented on the tasks that needed improvement, which most likely led to discouragement, and a negative view of his job. When he went out on his own, those same people started telling him how good he was at certain things. That’s empowering! When David was in the corporate world, his Maximizer talent told him that nothing was every good enough – he spent hours perfecting the little details that didn’t truly matter. Now, he believes that he can do a great job, and that the little details don’t matter to others, so he saves a lot of time by not sweating the small things. Prioritize! You don’t have to work hard every day to succeed and be happy. Somewhere along the way, it’s become the norm that in order to succeed, we have to put in a hard day’s work and that life isn’t easy. That is NOT true! As David moved up the corporate ladder and become more successful and earned more money, he realized he was less and less happier. Working “hard” was not a pleasure. Look around at what other people are doing. Watch to see what others around you are doing, especially those who’ve found a way to do what they truly love. It will give you ideas for other ways to earn a living, while at the same time enjoying your life. In David’s case, there was another podcaster who he heard, and thought it was something he would love to do. Have your own goals. If you are working every day in the corporate world, you are fulfilling the goals, and earning money of someone else. David encourages you to have your own goals, using the example of the band Duran Duran. You’ve got to hear their story and how they achieved their own goals, as David tells it. The status quo doesn’t have to be. Just because people expect you to go to work every day, dressed a certain way, being a high achiever, it doesn’t mean that you are required to be part of the status quo. Once David has this AH HA moment, he was ready to take that LEAP, and go for it. As he says, he “Broke Free”. Connect the dots. Go back in time, and look at yourself before life got serious (around ages 5-9). What things did you want to do? What did you truly enjoy doing every day? Then, go through your attic and look for things from that time period. In David’s case, he found cassette tapes that included interviews he had done with people around town when he was 9. He had completely forgotten about that. Next, look at the paths of your career. In his case, he had a training background, and then moved into doing presentations. All these dots connected him to what he is doing now – interviewing people and presenting topics to the world. What are your dots? Find a mentor (or at least a person who will encourage you). Having someone to encourage you to take a leap, can make all the difference. It feels great to know others believe you have what it takes to meet your own goals. Use your strengths to help you make the leap. For example, David has an Activator talent, which enables him to start projects. He uses this to go out each day, doing what he loves, and actually “living” his life. Can you believe he sometimes goes a whole week without checking his email? That’s because he can. Wait for the SUPER YESES. Once you are out on your own, if people approach you with deals that would bring in money, but not meet your own criteria for the new business you’ve started, then say no. David found that all the little no’s make room for the SUPER YESES, which are the ones that will really move you on. Live the 20/80 Rule. Knowing that 20% of the things you do bring 80% of the reward, PRIORITIZE your tasks to focus on the 20%, and limit the amount of time you spend on the other 80% (they can be time suckers). Remember, knowing your Strengths and understanding them can have a huge impact on your personal and professional lives. This week's podcast features David Langford, CEO and Founder of Langford International, Inc. and Deming Institute Advisory Council member. In David's third podcast he explores ways to get started in employing the Deming philosophy in education. In many instances this requires an "out of body experience"; stop playing the blame game, stop being a victim. He tells us to stop worrying about the bigger system and start optimizing the performance of the group, which you have influence over.  David shares an example of a student whose "new" knowledge and appreciation for a system led to a study of the most common systemic questions asked by students. Listen as he reviews what they learned - to stop wasting time on things that are not meaningful, to start concentrating on things that are and get those to a higher degree of performance and to concentrate on deep learning experiences with lasting impact. David explores how a small group of committed people working in a consistent fashion can transform an organization. You don't have to be "all in" to create transformation. It can start with you. David will offer an inter-faith exploration on themes of new life and renewal. This will also be the last in his year-long series on "reconstructing theology": essential themes from the Judeo-Christian traditions. In David's own words, the series has been a theology for skeptics, exploring some of the difficult ideas from the Western religious traditions. The Easter service will focus on the idea of salvation. Noting that salvation derives from the Latin root, salus, meaning to be safe and sound, this meditation will explore what that might mean not only in the context of Easter, but in the everyday world of our lives. The world often seems unyielding and dangerous. Here, one finds a word of hope and encouragement. This teaching will protect you and your future projects, business, or service for the Lord! The principles in this teaching will transfer to any area of endeavor: business, social, family, or ministry. DESCRIPTION: How to take ACTION so you can do the things you want to do in life. How to fulfill your destiny with excellence! In this podcast I talk specifically about how to recover loss and take action against attacks on your mind, your body, your emotions, and your possessions!SUCCESS THROUGH ACTION SERIES – PART 5 (FINAL) MUSIC / INTRO YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A WONDERFUL FUTURE Remember that ACTION keeps you under the anointing so that you are as a new, sharp threshing instrument. Knowing that the enemy’s KEY INTENTION is to STOP your action, you now have military intelligence as to his plans. Your main focus NOW should be on developing a spirit of excellence in your action. That’s what The University of Excellence is about. There are SEVEN (7) things you need to cultivate a spirit of excellence: 1. VISION Spend time with God. Pray and fast for:  A fresh vision; and, A prophetic, apostolic anointing. 2. DETERMINATION You need "bulldog" endurance and perseverance. You can't be a "pansy" and you can't be a quitter. Be a warrior and remember: If you don't quit, you will win! (But if you quit, you can't win!) 3. PRIORITIES You need to put God's program FIRST in life. He will show you when you need to spend time for family, for recreation, and for fellowship. At times, He may have you spend LOTS of time on family, recreation, and fellowship. But don't try to replace God's Kingdom as your top priority. "You seek first the kingdom of God, and all things will be added unto you." (Matthew 6:33) MUSIC 4. ACCOUNTABILITY   Accountability will give you real liberty. You need to be accountable to: Jesus, the Great Pastor; and, Others, in ministry. 5. REST   You need to rest one day a week. This is God's plan and is necessary for your overall long-term health and blessing. At times, He may lead you to take extended periods of rest. Always obey Him in these matters. He knows what is best for you . . . and for those to whom you minister. You can't minister effectively if you're worn out or burnt out! "For thus says the LORD God, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest you will be saved; in quietness and confidence will be your strength." (Isaiah 30:15) Honoring and keeping the Sabbath will also enable you to appropriate the rewards of a spirit of EXCELLENCE: delight, dominion, and desires granted. (Isaiah 58:13-14) 6. A HEART FOR GOD The prophet Samuel said, “The LORD has sought him a man after his own heart,” describing King David. (1 Samuel 13:14) After being anointed, and successful as a king and military leader - the champion of the people - King David sinned greatly. Even in the midst of his sin, he had a heart toward God, which caused him to repent. He paid dearly for his sin, but even in the midst of his sin, he loved God and was repentant. MUSIC In all his public official conduct he acted according to the Divine mind, and fulfilled the will of his Maker: thus was he a man after God's own heart. In reference to his private or personal moral conduct, the word is never used. So what was his problem? Why did David sin? The answer is: He didn’t FEAR God. He loved God, but He didn’t fear Him! In David’s rulership of the Kingdom, in his official conduct, he fulfilled the will of God; however, in his private life and personal conduct he failed miserably - but then repented. MUSIC 7. INTEGRITY Honesty and moral uprightness are the KEY INDICATORS of the God shaped life. The deeper your character, the greater your impact! Many things that we question in life, even small things, are a TEST of our integrity. God is constantly testing us to see if we can be entrusted with greater giftings, talents, skills, and responsibilities. Integrity is a two edged sword. It is an instrument of blessing: For ourselves - We must live with ourselves in all good conscience. “For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved if our heart condemn us not, then we have confidence toward God.” (1 John 3:20-21) This assures us of answered prayer and provision. “And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.” (Verse 22) For others - Our families, our friends, our parishioners, our communities . . . our progeny . . . all are impacted by our integrity. The quality of our life is a direct antecedent of the same. The degree of EXCELLENCE of your life and ministry predetermines your future . . . and many times, the future of those to whom you minister and love. LIVE A LIFE OF EXCELLENCE!
