In this episode, Dan Neumann is joined by a return guest and AgileThought colleague, Michael Guiler. Mike has been an agile coach for over 15 years and has experience helping geographically dispersed organizations (in both the business and technology fields) to transform and better achieve their goals. For the last year and a half, Mike has been with AgileThought as an Agile Consultant.   Together, Dan and Mike are discussing employee engagement and what organizations and leadership can do to improve it. Mike shares 2020 employee engagement statistics, what creates engagement, the differences between managers and leaders (and why this is important), and the key tips on what we can all do to drive employee engagement forward.   Key Takeaways 2020 employee engagement statistics: Only 36% of the people in an organization are actively engaged 50% of the people are “going along for the ride”/are ambivalent 14% of people are actively looking to “get off the train”/actively disengaged That adds up to 64% of the people in an organization are not giving the best they can give The good: the actively engaged employee percentage has been consistently going up year after year since 2009 What can we do to improve these statistics? What would make employees more engaged? People want to do know why they are doing what they're doing, have autonomy over it, understand what the goal is, and have a purpose Don't micromanage people as a manager or leader in an organization Transition managers into leadership roles Managers in an organization need to make sure employees understand autonomy, mastery, and purpose if they really want to help motivate and engage their people (Daniel Pink's book, Drive) Managers need to make sure that the organization's vision is very clear to everyone Ask, “Where are we headed? What are we trying to achieve?” Becoming self-managing and engaging will lead to employee motivation but the goal first needs to be understood If the vision is too big or too far out, employees can't visualize it (as a leader, you need to break this vision down into smaller, shorter-term goals so that getting from A-Z is understood) The product goal should be tied to the organizational vision If something isn't fulfilling the goal, end it/throw it away The goal should be shared early, often, and everywhere Share examples of things that were accomplished in the organization that fulfill said goal Managers vs. Leaders (and how leaders can improve employee engagement): A manager is somebody that is task-oriented, activity tracking, and only concerned about their own actions A leader is focused on the “us”/what “we” achieved, improving the environment for those who work within it, and enabling their team to succeed An organization's duty is to develop its managers into leaders, hire leaders, and foster an environment for leaders Keep in mind the recent shift to the Scrum Guide from “Servant-leader” to “leading by serving” It is important for managers/leaders to create a safe environment for people to engage without punishment/ridicule for making mistakes As a leader, it is important to understand that sometimes good decisions can lead to bad outcomes and bad decisions can lead to good outcomes (so don't punish, but rather explore this concept and create safety for employees) Leadership is not proportional to the time spent talking in meetings You have to give people the space to talk, explore, and share A tip for giving others space in conversation: Ask yourself before speaking, “Does it need to be said? Does it need to be said by me? 130: Customer Experience Design - Understanding the Behavioural Persona of Your Customer with Robert Wallace

Robert Wallace is VP of Growth at Tallwave which works with companies like PayPal, Banner Health, and Lumin Digital on their products and customer experiences. Robert has 20+ years of experience in branding, marketing and communications programs to help drive the company's growth.   Questions   Could you share with us a little bit about your journey, even though we did read a very short description of where you are now and what you're doing? We always like to ask our guests if they could share with us a little bit about their journey in their own words, and how they got to where they are today. Your current organization is a customer experience design company and we are going through a global pandemic, how have you been able to navigate in this space as an organization? And have you found it difficult to get the strategy or the design across to your clients, or even to your own employees to relate to your clients, especially during this environment that we're operating? Customer experience design from a product based perspective versus service based perspective, what are maybe one or two things that you think organizations really need to consider to really be above the rest as it relates to customer experience design. Could you share with us what's the one app, tool or website that you absolutely cannot live without in your business? Could you share with us what is the one thing that's going on in your life right now - something that you're really excited about, it could be something that you're working on to develop yourself or your people. Could you also share with us maybe one or two books that you have read, that have had the biggest impact on you, it could be a book that you read a very long time ago, or maybe even one that you read recently, but it really has just stayed with you. Where can listeners find you online? Do you have a quote or saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you tend to revert to this quote, it kind of helps to get you back on track and get you refocused. Do you have one of those?   Highlights   Robert’s Journey   Robert shared that at the moment, he’s based in Scottsdale, Arizona, where his company Tallwave is located. But he’s from Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh and that is where he spent a lot of his formative years before he went to college and graduate school.   And after that, he started his professional career, jumped right into a fast growth company called Airwalk. Airwalk was a head to toe action sports manufacturer, they did everything from skateboarding shoes to head to toe snowboarding equipment, to BMX shoes, etc. And that's where he really got his first taste of what magic it is when a customer base and a brand really merge together and make that emotional bond because Airwalk had that bond at that time and they had seen some pretty meteoric growth as a consequence of that. And when he was there, he ran retail marketing.   So anything that happened at the point of sale, at the retail point of sale, and then he also put his toe in the water, he’s dating himself now but he opened up the Airwalk’s online store, which at the time was not an easy feat and was a very controversial endeavour as well, because this is back in later 90s when eCommerce wasn't as ubiquitous and there was a lot of worry about cannibalization and those type of things. But he ran all of the operations of the online business for Airwalk. And that's really how he sort of backed into to the technology world.   From there, he moved out to Boston and work for a couple startups. One was a very large eCommerce site called FarmandCountry.com where he really started his product and product meant side of his background.   And so, he ran the product there at FarmandCountry.com. And then he took that experience to a startup coming out of MIT called Afanova. They were, how would I call it, they used evolutionary algorithms that came out of MIT and they use that evolutionary algorithms to do high throughput consumer testing for brand packaging, logos, product designs, those type of things.   So think of it as an incredibly efficient, a marketing research and feedback tool. He was there early on and helped commercialize the product and the technology itself, taking it and pointing it at different markets, but the one that was particularly worthwhile at that point was the consumer packaging goods industry. So they sold into Procter and Gamble, Coca Cola, Johnson and Johnson, Conagra, you name it, Nestle, the big CPG companies.   And from there he moved to Arizona and that's when he was early on in Tallwave - they’re a customer experience design company. And he was brought on early on to stand up the services side of the business, which has now grown, that was about 10 years ago. So it has grown to a much larger company where now and like as you mentioned, they work with companies as big as Amex and JP Morgan Chase all the way to well-funded startups and great up and coming companies like Lumin Digital, let's see, Emailage, Algolia, those type of startups that you may have heard of.   What he would say is the common thread in his career, he has done footwear, he has done farm equipment, he has done tech, and he has done crazy technology out of MIT and now he’s in a business that works with all sorts of companies.   But he would say the one common thread is a great brand doesn't really care about what industry you're in, it's about making that kind of emotional connection between the customer and the company itself.   And you do that by having an amazing experience from the beginning, you have a need as a customer all the way through, you bought product, use the product, maybe had to get some customer service from that company, all the way through being a repeat customer.   So thinking about all the touch points in there is a huge part of what excites him about brand experience and customer experience, which he’ll tip his hand in his bias, he thinks those two things are very close to the same thing, if not the same thing. But understanding the customer experience and what its impact can be is what he would say the common thread is through his marketing, branding and product management career so far.   Navigating Through the Customer Experience Design Space   Me: A very fullsome journey that has taken you to different industries and different touch points so you have a very diverse approach as it relates to these different industries. So, you span quite a few industries as you indicated in explaining your journey. I know you said your current organization is a customer experience design company and we are going through a global pandemic, how have you been able to navigate in this space as an organization? And have you found it difficult to get the strategy or the design across to your clients, or even to your own employees to relate to your clients, especially during this environment that we're operating?   Robert shared that they've been very fortunate, and the nature of their work, which is creative designers, marketers, consultants, those type of people, it wasn't a huge stretch for them to work remotely, so they were very fortunate in that regard.   And they were also very fortunate because they had a broad variety of clients and some were impacted more fundamentally than others during the pandemic, so that helped them as well. But they definitely have faced the customer experience situation both from their own standpoint, but also their clients. And if you think about, if you think customer experience broadly, they've almost become more acutely aware of the customer’s experience and the individuals customers experience more acutely than they ever have before because of the pandemic. So, companies have had no choice but to take a long, hard look at how they service and provide value to their customer base. And depending on the industry, of course, you've had to adjust accordingly. But he believes it hits all industries.   So they've seen what has happened in retail, for example, that everything that probably was on the customer experience roadmap so to speak, curb side pickup, buy online, pick up in store, touch less flooring, all of those things were probably on the roadmap already but the pandemic pushed it all forward by 5 years or so.   So, he thinks that's an easy one and a pretty straightforward one. But anytime you've had to think about how your customers are interacting with you, he thinks every company, and almost every person in that company has had to rethink how we do that effectively and how we provide value and where the value actually lies, versus necessarily just in person interactions.   Robert stated that Yanique had mentioned how do they actually deliver some of their work, like he said, it lends itself pretty well to a virtual world. They're able to shift a lot of their workshops online and there are some pretty cool tools that they've been using in order to do that. But he will say that that everybody's itching to have a little bit more human interaction.    Customer Experience Design From a Product Based Perspective Versus Service Based Perspective     Me: So tell us a little bit about customer experience design from a product based perspective versus service based perspective, could you share with us maybe one or two things that as a company, whether you're a big organization like let's say, a PayPal an Amazon versus a small company, because we do have quite a range of listeners that listen to this podcast, some of them hold very big positions in these large organizations and some of them who run their own business so they wear the hat on product development, marketing, social media, all of the different things. So if we were to look on it from that perspective, what are maybe one or two things that you think they really need to consider to really be above the rest as it relates to customer experience design.   Robert stated that the one thing that he would recommend regardless of whether you're a product company or a service company, and regardless of how big or small your company is, he thinks he would highly recommend that all companies look at and be very diligent and honest about what the actual customer journey is.   That is from the point that the customer realizes they have a need, and every step all the way through purchase, use, service, and repurchase, hopefully. So, every single touch point and then making sure that you understand who those user personas are that would be going through that journey.   And that's actually not demographic, per se at all, it's more behavioural when he says persona. So who are the types of people that are using your products or services, once you have really a good deal of empathy for who those personas are, and what they go through in terms of every step of the process around their customer journey, which may or may not have to do with your company specifically, but what is actually their journey as a customer.   He thinks from there, you're in a great position to see where the opportunities are, the opportunities might be, “Wow, there's a gap in the market in terms of how they are accessing our product and using it.” And in that case, you can do a lot of user experience exploration and redesign and see if you can remap how that looks in order to make the product part of that experience more seamless, easier to use, and generally more delightful for the customer.   Or if you're a services-based business, you may have a look at it and say, “Okay, how are we going to actually support all these interactions with our customers.” And knowing how they interact and the pains they're feeling, you can start to tailor what services you might provide to them, how you might provide to them, etc. So, speaking for Tallwave even so, he would say that the customer journey is the core component, the starting point he would say for any kind of company product or service.   App, Website or Tool that Robert Absolutely Can’t Live Without in Him Business    When asked about an online resource that he cannot live without in his business, Robert shared that there are a few that their company uses. But he’ll mention two and he would say that they're less do or die for him personally, but certainly for customer experience type work and the kind of work that their team does so well.   The first one is InVision, which is a design tool to make high fidelity mock ups and present them and interact with them with their clients. So they do a tonne of work in software and mobile app development and then they also do some web work as well and laying those out in InVision and then being able to show something that's high fidelity and in some cases even clickable to their clients and to even perhaps some validation work really helps them understand if they're on the right track and making sure that they're building a product that meets the market need.   The other one that he would say has really become pretty invaluable this year is a company called Miro. And that company, their tool allows them to do a whole plethora of interactive activities, from whiteboarding sessions to mind mapping to post it note work, where they put up business model canvases and interact. But it allows everybody to interact in the tool simultaneously as if they were in the room together doing that with physical post it notes and whiteboards like they used to pre pandemic.   So, every time he uses Miro, he’s very impressed with how well they've taken into consideration the users of that tool and the people that use whiteboards and workshopping and those types of things so often, like a lot of agency folks, design folks, consulting folks, that's a great example of a company that has really listened to who the personas are, what behaviour do they take place in, and then what is the journey that we go through to implement that, and they've built that into the product. So, he thinks they're actually a good example of what he was describing before.    What Robert is Really Excited About Now!    Robert shared that on a personal level, the more and more of the world keeps getting vaccinated, and he’s halfway home, meaning he got one of the two shots, so he'll soon be fully vaccinated and that is a relief, he’s sure to everybody that gets it for themselves and their loved one. So the things that come with that are more time and more quality time with family and friends. And so, that's probably his number one personal item.   On a professional level, he thinks it is when we all go through times like this, and the pandemic was unlike any other. He thinks when we come out of the other side, we've all transformed a little bit and he’s excited by what that transformation, as painful as it might have been, that transformation has opened up a lot of opportunities for all of us, especially in the business world.   Books That Have Had the Greatest Impact on Robert   When asked about books that have had the biggest impact, Robert shared that one he has read about 4 years ago, 5 years ago maybe, it's called Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown. And he found it to be very useful and worthwhile for both his personal and professional life and it's really about identifying what really is adding value to the time that you're spending on something and when to say no, and why and being very deliberate about that. And in very simple terms, because he thinks most of us, at least at some point struggle with saying no, and being a little overburdened, but what really is important now is something that Essentialism definitely has taught him. So that's sort of a both a professional book.   And then he’s also reading a book that he’s finding fascinating, it's called Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don’t Have All the Facts by Annie Duke as in gambling bets, and it's written by a former professional poker player. And it's not at all about poker, it is about decision making, processes and using the mind-set that a professional poker player or gambler that they use and the processes they use in order to evaluate what they're doing.   For those on the path to financial independence, finance, fitness, and life optimization all intersect. During her career in the banking industry, Shannon McLay found it didn't work for the people she wanted to help. She set out to use her skill set and training to change the coaching industry and founded Financial Gym. Even for those who not physically fit, they know what it looks like and there are many resources available for achieving it. The path the financial independence is similar in that it is a long journey. You have to work up to it, will experience setbacks, and take breaks. Much like diets, budgets don't work long-term. Making lifestyle changes is the key to success. At the Financial Gym, clients hit 90% of the goals set for themselves by examining their money behaviors and constantly working to figure out what's will work for them. The two largest emotions people have regarding money are fear and shame. Once people drop these highly charged emotions and understand the financial numbers don't define them, they can break through and embrace moving forward. After turning 30, Shannon realized she didn't want the life she was leading. Her life's trajectory changed when she came to understand that to have long-term sustainable happiness is to help other people and not expect anything in return. During her work as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch, she discovered she enjoyed helping out her pro bono clients far more than the wealthy ones. It allowed her to see there was a need for a service where it didn't matter what you looked like financially, you just needed to get financially healthy. Much like going to the gym to get healthy, her concept of a financial gym was a place to meet with financial trainers for a monthly membership fee. Following the model of H&R Block, Shannon believed people wanted to meet with a financial advisor face-to-face. She was advised to prove the model would work before looking to raise money. Experimenting with different plans and prices, she had great success with her first clients increasing their net worth. Clients wanted to keep working with her, but she was running out of money to continue investing in her business. When a former boss invested $100,000 in her concept, she rebranded using the gym concept. The physical environment of the Financial Gym created a community where clients had a shared goal and a safe space to talk about money. Shannon was able to scale her business by developing a training program and teaching compassionate and empathetic people what she knew. Those contemplating becoming an entrepreneur should ask themselves, “Am I a good problem solver?” because running a business is like solving a lot of word problems. No one's financial situation is so bad that it can't be fixed. The trainers at the Financial Gym have seen and fixed it all. Annie Duke is an author, corporate speaker, and consultant in the decision-making space. Her most recent book, Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don’t Have All the Facts, quickly became a national bestseller and landed on the Behavioral Grooves Top 10 list for 2018!  Prior to her career as a professional poker player, Annie was awarded a National Science Foundation Fellowship to study Cognitive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the co-founder of The Alliance for Decision Education, a non-profit whose mission to improve lives by empowering students through decision skills education. This is Behavioral Grooves’ 100th episode! Who would have thought when we started out two years ago without a clue about HOW to produce and publish a podcast that we’d reach this milestone?  Our first podcast recording began with a very willing Dr. James Heyman, a computer with some recording software, and a dinky little microphone before a meetup we were doing that night. But the conversation was terrific, and we launched it with excitement. Today, we are more thoughtful, have better equipment, and continue to have great guests. For our 100th Episode, we traveled to Philadelphia to host Annie Duke, Jeff Kreisler and Dr. Michael Hallsworth in front of a live audience at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. A little about each of them… This episode covers decision making in an uncertain world with these three renowned experts. We talk about biases and hacks to deal with those biases. And we dove into the role that context plays in our decision making. After the live event, Kurt and Tim groove on some of the highlights of the discussion. Following that, Tim shares a recap in the Bonus Track portion of the episode.   Guests Michael Hallsworth, PhD is the Managing Director of the Behavioural Insights Team in North America, based in Brooklyn, New York. We discussed how tribes can offer us distinctiveness and belongingness but also confine us with the tribe’s sometimes negative influences. He had set up then shut down a few websites and had reached the point where he thought that even though he had retired, he could be a trader. He was experienced. At his prior firm, he was joint chief of investment researchers and money managers and trading was just part of what he and his team did, which included hedge funds and private equity. As his group’s head strategist, he would go to New York once a year and meet hedge fund managers, because he liked to see what they were thinking, to learn from their successes and mistakes and to see their take on the world. He said you could tell where the quants sat and where the discretionary traders say because the latter were messier and their desks less organized, but it looked like a fun and cool place to work. Then once he saw them at their desks trading, David got the idea that trading wasn’t that hard as he had had 15 years of investment experience. Trading turns out to be a lot harder than he had thought So a year after he quit his job, he decided to be a trader in commodity futures, currencies, options just to see how it would go. He knew enough to know that he would not be risking all his money into it, because he had known many people who had suffered huge losses in trading commodities. But he thought with his experience that he knew enough. He had economic models to use, and other investing tools, so he started trading and quite quickly found that it was not nearly as easy as he had suspected it would be. Some of the trades went well, and some didn’t. The problem he found mainly with commodities and foreign exchange (Forex), gold, silver, and other precious metals was the volatility. They trade almost 24 hours a day but it is extremely volatile, and there is no rhyme nor reason for that the volatility. Decides to stop trading but forgets to close one trade So he realized that there were things happening that were not at all like the investing he was used to. He had done fine, if fine is losing a little bit of money, but nevertheless he decided to stop trading. What he forgot was that he still had one trade in silver left open. It was a stop-buy order set up so that when silver fell to a certain price, the system would buy an open contract on silver that would go long on silver. He had neglected to close the position, so the trade went as intended: silver fell to the resistance point and the system trading bought him silver (set up to bet that silver would increase in value), but then silver kept falling. Before he realized what had happened, he had lost around US$25,000 in this particular silver contract. Good decisions are so due to processes not outcomes At this point in his story, David is reminded of Annie Duke, who in her book, Thinking in Bets, makes a distinction between decision outcomes and decision processes. A good decision, certainly a good investment decision, doesn’t happen because it has a good outcome, a good decision is the result of a good process, he related, para-phrasing Duke’s argument. He had not had a good process for buying commodity futures and trading because he didn’t understand what the market was like. He thought he knew enough about investing, how commodities work and economic trends, but he admits that he really didn’t. ‘You must know who’s buying or selling and the volume’ He also recalled a professional trader telling him that no one can successfully invest unless they have “border-flow information”. In other words, that the investor knows who’s buying, who’s selling, and how much they’re buying. Even today, the other thing one must ask when they invest: “Who’s on the other side of the trade?” “Who am I trading with?” Benjamin Graham wrote in his classic, The Intelligent Investor, that he was trading with individuals, and that most individual stocks were held by individuals, and so he could get some type of informational insight. In David’s commodities trading career, he said, he was up against institutions, and mostly quantitative “bots”, algorithms that can act very quickly. Sting comes from the fact he should have known better David also recalls a quote from The Wall Street Journal that if a hedge fund that trades in commodities thinks that their competitive edge is that they have a network of people who know what’s going on in terms of order flow, it’s a bit like saying you can deliver a package faster than Amazon. Like maybe you could at one point, but now you’re competing against robots, which excel extremely well in an environment in which there is no rhyme or reason to why things are moving. That’s what David learned. He came out of trading a little wiser, and kept his remaining $25,000. The sting certainly came from losing the money, but in some ways knowing that he should have known better stung more.   “(US$25,000) That’s not a huge loss, but it stung because of how I lost it. Annie Duke in her book, Thinking in Bets, distinguishes … a good investment decision isn’t so because it has a good outcome, a good decision is the result of a good process. And I did not have a good process for buying commodity futures and trading because I didn’t understand what the market was like.” David Stein   Some lessons No one should be trading commodity futures or Forex Such instruments are speculative - a speculation is when there is disagreement on whether the return will be positive or negative. Individuals should rather be focused on investing Investing has a positive expected return, with usually some income component or earnings component. The key is to focus on investing. It’s fine to have some diversification and speculative forays for hedging. But if individuals bet their retirement on trading, that’s insane, because it is purely speculative, and that means you have to get everything precisely right to make money.     Andrew’s takeaways What do you know that the market doesn’t know? Investors in individual stocks must ask themselves that crucial question. Most of the time, the answer is going to be: “Nothing!” It is insufficient to find a company or idea that you like; what is required is to find a company or an idea that you like that the market has failed to notice. Investing in commodities or Forex is extremely risky Such investing is tantamount to a bet against the balance sheet of the banks, a bet against the whims of politicians, and a bet against a central bank’s balance sheets. These factors are overpowering and can shift the market in a minute, which is frightening. When investing in forex, and something, you are definitely mean it, the Fed decides to do something, is there’s nothing you can do but respond to it. And that response may be that it crushes your portfolio. So is there anything you’d add to my takeaways from that?     Actionable advice Don’t be a trader But if you do, start off with a very small amount of money, and be prepared to lose it all, because trading is speculation. Use shadow portfolios, don’t risk real money Make sure you understand how it all works. Remember this too: If a person has or is a successful trader, they will not be teaching in a trading academy … they’ll either be working for hedge funds or they’re already retired and living on the beach somewhere. If someone is teaching other people how to trade, they are making their money teaching other people how to trade, they’re not making their money trading.     No. 1 goal for next the 12 months To sell enough books so he gets to write another one He enjoyed the writing process of taking five years of podcast episodes and distilling them into the best 60,000 words. The Case: Misty was 35 and concerned about fertility Doctors discovered (and operated on) endometriosis leaving her with brain fog and extreme fatigue Medication and more surgery were suggested but she was told that her symptoms were normal The Investigation We Americans tend to trust our medical system despite statistics that show a failing system. We feel lost when a doctor tells us something is fine when we know in our gut it’s not. We don’t speak up when we’re told our symptoms are normal and that we should just get used to living with them. We ignore our instincts because we believe someone who’s been educated must know more about our bodies than we do. Misty’s experience is all too common. She was given few options and dismissed. She was told that because her labs were ‘normal’ she should get used to these symptoms. When more mysterious symptoms showed up and were dismissed (like a 45 lb weight gain) Misty knew that she had to fight for her quality of life. Since then, she’s not only become her own health advocate and solved many of her unexplained health issues, she’s also become a champion for others struggling with a medical system that’s failing them. Misty isn’t just a case in Health Mysteries Solved. She’s also the creator of Healing Rosie a resource website for women who want to get to the bottom of their concerns by becoming a health self-advocate. She’s passionate about helping people stand up for themselves and demand both answers and a quality of life. Misty also facilitates an online community where women can share their stories and knowledge as they navigate their way to better health. Doctors Don’t Have All the Answers While medical doctors do have a great deal of knowledge and play an important role in diagnosing conditions and finding treatments, we can’t assume that they know everything. Anyone wanting to become their own health advocate must get comfortable with questioning their doctor, finding answers elsewhere, and not accepting the doctor’s opinion as final. It’s okay to keep looking even when a doctor says that ‘labs are normal’ or that you have to get used to living with certain symptoms or limitations. Women Normalize Suffering One of the biggest reasons that we fail to get to the bottom of our health issues is that women accept suffering as part of the female condition. Our mothers, other women, and doctors have trained us to believe certain sufferings are ours to bear - especially around menstruation. And, all too often, we put others’ needs before our own. We are culturally programed to take care of our children, our spouses (and sometimes our bosses or employees) before we take care of ourselves. We simply accept that it’s normal to be tired, have brain fog (especially after a certain age), gain weight, be irritable, and deal with chronic pain. We have to stop accepting suffering and start expecting to feel good. Set Health Goals Even as health self-advocates, we need doctors to help us navigate the medical insurance industry. One way that Misty recommends getting doctors on board with your quest for good health is to discuss health goals with your doctor. This makes your requests less about whether your labs are normal or if you should be accepting a certain symptom as unavoidable. Instead, it gives the whole process an outcome that the doctor can get behind. Personalize Your Health Goals Every person is going to have different goals for their health. Misty offers 10 basic health expectations but each individual has to prioritize their own list. Some of her goals include having a regular and pain-free period, maintaining a healthy weight that is under 30% body fat, having energy for your day, getting great sleep, having a healthy libido, and having good digestion. All 10 health goals are discussed in this episode. Find the Right Doctor Sharing your health goals with your doctor is a good way to determine if this is the right doctor for you. If your current doctor is not receptive to assisting you with your health goals, you may want to find a different doctor. This can be a time consuming process so Misty suggests having an initial consult with a potential doctor before going through the process they have for becoming a new patient - which can take months. It Takes a Team What many women fighting for their own good health need to know is that it takes a team of practitioners to get results. Misty suggests having a doctor (who is onboard with your health goals and willing to request labs needed to support them), a functional medicine doctor and a nurse practitioner. Affording Good Health All of this can seem out of reach financially for many people, especially if their insurance is limiting. Misty provides some great tips on how to get as much as possible covered and to do a certain amount of work on your own to decrease out-of-pocket expenses. This includes communicating with your insurance company to gain clarity on how to get certain labs covered. Or, it might be leaving the country for inexpensive procedures like dental care in Mexico. Her community has also proven to be a great resource for people looking to be savvy with their health dollars. Good Resources are Available One of the first steps in becoming a health self-advocate is educating yourself. Misty recommends multiple books for various conditions and suggests that most women will want to heal their gut first and keep an eye on their thyroid. But most importantly, don’t settle for poor health and a compromised quality of life - get to the root of the problem and be your own advocate. Eliminating Health Mysteries Misty was able to really dig in to find the root cause of each issue despite the complicated collection of concerns. Jeff heads up a program for the Department of Energy and has partnered with your host Sue Dyer.   Jeff’s Journey to Becoming the Project Director at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (2:38) Jeff grew up the son of a contractor and got a bachelor’s degree in structural engineering Jeff spent his early career working for engineering firms designing buildings and bridges After spending some time at a few national laboratories in the Midwest he transitioned to SLAC National Laboratory in Menlo Park, CA.   About SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (5:40)   SLAC is funded by the Department of Energy There are about 1,500 people focused on various research disciplines SLAC is adjacent to the Stanford campus and uses a linear accelerator that focuses on certain missions How Jeff Has Helped Spread the Idea of Collaboration Through the Department of Energy’s National Laboratories (8:00) Jeff is working to create an environment that’s more attractive to contractors Owners need to put the contractor at their same level and integrate them with the team A healthy partnering environment is key Bringing the stakeholders into the process is important You have to create a strong relationship between the leadership of the owners and the leadership of a construction company The larger a project gets, the complexity isn’t only in the tech, it’s in the people   Jeff’s Journey with the Project Leadership Institute (13:47) The vision of the institute is a year-long development program with week-long events that have learnings from Stanford and experienced leaders from the Department of Energy A group of 25 people is accepted for the year-long program, which is a mix of graduate-level training and experiential training The institute wants to create a culture of project leadership across the complex that understands how to manage large, complex projects The Project Leadership Institute is trying to raise the bar for project leadership culture across the bar for the Department of Energy and it is about creating a network that people can leverage going forward     What Jeff has Learned from Running the Project Leadership Institute (18:10) While easily defined by the Project Management Institute, in complex projects the people component makes it a Sociological experiment that is occasionally interrupted by technical progress.  One way you’re guaranteed to fail as a leader is if you have a lot of blind spots. Developing trust in our team and facilitating the development of trust helps you develop communication in a way that gets rid of blind spots.   Why Emotional Intelligence is Important (20:15) You need to understand how to have crucial conversations, balancing empathy and accountability We listen as leaders and understand challenges, but you can’t let up on requirements or accountability to delivery When we know our strengths and weaknesses, we can allow others to help us   How Jeff is Applying PLI Knowledge to the $1 Billion X-Ray Accelerator Project (22:35) A leader has to know how to leverage people’s strengths and align them to the tasks that have to be done.  You have to understand how to adapt when people’s skillsets change over the years.  It’s difficult to stay focused when you don’t know your individual triggers.   What PLI’s Graduates Have Learned and How They Apply It (25:00)   Preparing to lead daily projects - negotiations, etc. Becoming a highly effective leader - emotional intelligence, and self-awareness Positioning your project for success - risk and safety Delivering high-risk complex projects - making quality decisions The Graduation - crisis communications/management   Jeff’s Greatest Strength as a Leader (27:40)   Jeff is a fan of the Strengths Finder 2.0 tool - his strengths are focus, strategy, and being analytical. Most people know Annie as a professional poker player. the equivalent of one soda a day and they gave the mice that amount of fructose corn syrup the issue is that they had genetically engineered these mice so that they would get polyps and cancer sure which is funny because you wonder like your to be genetically engineered you never think that your to get that like I'm genetically engineered to be faster genetically engineered bigger stronger than one poor mouse is like on genetically engineered to get cancer and that's how they end up looking at these different studies so what they did as they showed that by giving the high fructose corn syrup dramatically raise the amount of polyps and cancer over 80 times the mice that were not given high fructose corn so this is with an equivalent of one soda one soda a day so it's absolutely incredible because I love your member but a year ago study came out where was looking at how the rate of colon cancer millennial's has been going to share we did a video on that on YouTube or Ricardo was we did the interpretive jujitsu and what it showed is it dealt with the millennial's were getting a higher rate of colon cancer because of obesity they should with these mice they did not become obese they did not develop metabolic syndrome it's strictly due to the fructose and the sugar that they were consumed then they were able to actually show that I take it was fructose the tumor cells love it so much that they could put a radioisotope and they could show that it just got sucked up it turns on certain genes that allows the tumor to go undetected absolutely fascinating because the fructose and that the high fructose corn syrup they believe could be very similar to others like table sugar bottom line is tumors love sugar and this is the first study that's been done were really actually look Type of Cancer so He's, Dedicated His Life to Solving the Problem Whoa And He Says That I Think I Want to Go from 0% Success Rate To 20% So Go Seem the Following Year and How's All That Going Were the Stats Not until Manning and He Says He Is Buried I Don't Use Were Depressed but He's Not It's Jovial and As Happy As He Has Been Because He It's What He's Doing Now What He Did on Me Is Not Working on Other Patients so He Where He Thought He Had Found Some Kind of Cure to Help Some People It Had Worked so at That Point He Said We Still Have Any Documented Survivor And I'm Now at Nine Years of Be Nine Years of Some And so for Lack of And One Was Living There Anybody with This Type of Cancer They Get Funneled to MD Anderson to Take Well It's Rare Enough That I Don't Know That Everybody You Know Can Identify the Particular Type of Cancer and They End up at Anderson Sure You Know That I Feel Fortunate Enough That I Had Doctors That Said Well You Got Something's Kinda Weird Here and I Think You Need to Go on Those Centers of Excellence So My Mom Spent Middle Years Go on the MD Anderson and I Had Experience That in the Care That They Gave You There's so That's First Place I'm Going But There's Other Places in the Country That These Guys These Researchers Shared Information Back and Forth I'm Not Saying That the Dr. Robbie Had 455 Patients of His Own Don't Hate They've Collected This from from Other Clinics or Other Centers of Excellence and Greatest Database and Sharon Research So You Were Patient Number One To Make It to the Five Year Survival Mark and I Did Not See Him in January and Still Go Back Every Year But I Didn't Get Him on the Schedule So the Orthopedic Lady but This December Want to Go Back I Will Make Sure I Have Him on Schedule so I Can Give Him One More Time Right Where the Stats We Also like Me Is There Anybody Else out There That's That Surviving How Are You Doing to Your Cretin The New Elixir Saul Somebody Else's Problem It's Crazy but That's Just like When You Are down to Your Last Dollar You Don't Know How You're Going to Get Out Of the Casino And You Going to Put It on the Table and Hopefully Hit Hard Eight or Something like That so That She If you record it correctly, you don't need to work magic in post-production. For me, this is not a deal breaker. Yes, the Zoom H6 does this, but it doesn't have the built-in Aphex, the phone connection, jingle buttons and more. As a podcast host, you are not supposed to have favourite episodes – but you still do. This is one of those. I have the pleasure today of bringing you my conversation with Annie Duke. Annie is a decision scientist and former professional poker player. In fact, for two decades, she was one of the best in the world. In 2004, she beat a field of 234 players to win her first World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold bracelet. In 2010, she won the prestigious NBC national Heads Up Poker Championship. However, this is not an episode about poker – well it isn't and it is. As you will hear, poker is a game that mimics life. That is because it is all about making decisions under conditions of uncertainty. Therefore, this is a conversation about making decisions. In fact, Annie has a background in cognitive psychology and received a prestigious National Science Foundation fellowship prior to her poker career. She currently is working on many projects in the realm of decision science including with the likes of Phillip Tetlock, a giant in this field. Earlier this year, Annie's book was published – Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts. It is an excellent book which I highly recommend. We get into a number of the concepts Annie discusses in her book and much, much more including: Annie's origin story as a poker player and decision scientist; The concept of “resulting” and how we apply this to lives – very useful stuff! “Decision quality” – and why this is so important. Annie discusses an example that comes from American football: the Seattle Seahawks' coach Pete Carroll's decision to throw a pass late during Super Bowl 49 which ultimately cost them the game. David ponders big ideas such a reflexive vs. deliberative thinking and why the differences between causation and correlation must be considered. If you’ve ever wondered about how to improve your investing decisions while combining analytical research with skilled intuition, this episode will answer many of your questions.Investing and life are like poker – not chess!Many investors approach financial decisions like a game of chess, where there are correct and incorrect moves. However investing, and real life, are more closely related to poker, a game of uncertainties. Duke explains in her book that a term known as “resulting” drives poker games. “Resulting” is the belief that the quality of a decision affects the quality of the outcome. However, David explains that a great decision is a result of a great decision-making process, regardless of the end outcome. Learn how to improve your decision-making process by listening to this episode.Don’t assume causation when there’s only correlationOne of the biggest threats to a good decision making processes it the belief that there is always a direct causation linking the process and the end result. Even with the best knowledge and highest levels of skill, investing still contains an element of uncertainty. Sometimes there aren’t any connections between the decisions investors make and the end goal. For example, if you purchase a house, fix it up, and sell it 3 years later for a 50% profit, does that make you great at real estate investing? Maybe. But it could also have been a result of an overall uptick in the housing market, and any buy/sell transaction would have been profitable. David wants his listeners to know that correlation between good investing decisions and profitable outcomes do not always mean the same result will occur.How can you improve the quality of your investing decisions?Since investing is strongly related to the uncertainties and variables found in a game of poker, there are never surefire ways to ensure every decision will be profitable. But there are ways to increase your chances of succeeding. Duke explains that “The quality of our lives is the sum of our decision quality plus luck.” Investors can enhance their decision-making skills by considering market trends and understanding that no one knows for sure what market variables are going to do. David shares more tips for improving the quality of your investing decisions on this episode.Deliberative thinking vs reflexive thinking and the idea of wu-wei in investingDavid outlines two main patterns of thought on this episode: reflexive (fast) and deliberative (slow). Responsible investors utilize both methods on a continual basis. Always reacting to the market and going off of intuition is not a sustainable way of making investing decisions. However, utilizing only deliberative thinking could result in missed time-sensitive opportunities. That’s when the idea of wu-wei comes into play. Annie Duke’s new book is, “Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don’t Have All the Facts.” She has taken her poker expertise and graduate level degree of psychology and digested it into a book we all can relate to our lives. She is a poker player, author, decision making expert, and cognitive scientist. Her understanding of how luck, skill and uncertainty all play a role in life is fascinating. The foundation of decision making crosses over to all genres. She touches on football play calling, crypto currency, and everything in between. In Annie’s book she breaks down “the worst football play in Super Bowl history”, relating to Pete Carol. She proves that it was actually the right call in terms of probabilities and mathematics, Carroll was just unlucky. Carroll is on record admitting that it was the worst result of a call in Super Bowl history, but not the worst call. Under a stressful situation, like the Super Bowl, would you be able to make the right call? How good are you about checking your beliefs and keeping your bets in line? Are your decisions and outcomes lucky? Smart? Skilled? Very few outcomes are solely skill or solely luck. Phil Ivey, arguably the best poker player in the world, sorts out what was luck and what was skill after every win or loss he may have in a poker tournament. Learning occurs best when there are lots of decisions to be made in a compressed amount of time paired with lots of feedback to those decisions. Annie first studied this in young children learning to listen, speak, and digest words and quickly saw this study directly relate to the poker table. How do you learn when there is a lot of noisy feedback? Having limited resources, how do you use those resources to make educated bets? Life is a series of bets that compound on themselves. Annie makes the point that, “I’m not sure” is the best answer in many situations – and there is nothing wrong with that. Coming from a place of uncertainty helps to make more rational decisions. When that decision doesn’t turn out well, you can then analyze how you can improve that action going forward. Either we’re asleep or we’re awake. Either we’re consciously aware of something or we’re not. But we don’t become awake from reading books or having conversations. We wake up when we experience things, and we experience things differently based on our mindset.   Mindset Shift #1 – Don’t Get Wrapped Up in the Things You Can’t Control. I don’t necessarily think politics is the problem, I just don’t think it’s the solution. Other individuals will not solve your problems or improve your life.   Mindset Shift #2 – Loving & Accepting Every Experience Accepting the fullness of an experience will allow you to see the good in the bad, and it will help you learn to love every present moment. When you’re doing things you don’t particularly like, you can learn to love them because you know those things serve your greater purpose. When we experience hard times, we tend to quickly judge those as bad experiences. When we make that snap judgement, we miss the bigger picture of what we’re experiencing.   Mindset Shift #3 – Being a Victim Vs. Being Victimized We’ve all been victimized. We’ll be victimized intermittently throughout the rest of our lives. The difference between being victimized and being a victim is that being a victim is a role we assume, and it is a role that sheds responsibility for the circumstances we have been given that have been out of our control. What is in our control is our ability to react and be proactive   Mindset Shift #4 – Don’t Waste Energy on Can’t If you want to find an excuse to not do something, you will always find an excuse. Excuses can be real – that doesn’t mean you have to focus your energy and attention on them. It’s a choice to find reasons why you can’t or reasons why you can. In almost every situation, there are reasons for both.   Mindset Shift #5 – You Don’t Have to Have All the Answers to Start As a therapist, we often feel that we need to have all of the answers before we can help solve someone’s problems. But the reality is we can’t. We’re never going to have all the answers. You don’t need to be the ultimate subject expert to start anything, because that’s all subjective. The answers that you need to apply aren’t necessarily coming from other people’s information. Your answers come from your experiences.   Mindset Shift #6 – Don’t Be Afraid to Show Up When you try to meet other people’s expectations, you can’t fully show up. You can’t be the thing you think other people want. Not everyone will like what you do, but there’s plenty of people who will embrace who and what you are. You have to understand and recognize what you show up as. If you show up, you have to understand that there’s value in that. We want to see people and things that are true and aren’t hidden by an agenda. People love authenticity, whether we realize it consciously or not.   Mindset Shift #7 – Embrace Stoic Philosophy “The single most important practice in stoic philosophy is differentiating between what we can change and what we can’t.” –The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday Stoicism helps you look at the neutral nature of the universe. It responds to what you put out there. I truly believe the world will start to change when we all start recognizing what we have internally as valuable, and when we recognize that the things we put out into the world are valuable. Act.
