“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” - 2 Corinthians 8:9This powerful verse is often quoted when we talk about generosity, and rightly so. It shows us that generosity isn't just a financial principle—it's rooted in the very heart of the Gospel. Today, Dr. Nathan W. Harris joins us to explore that connection more deeply.Dr. Nathan W. Harris is the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at The University of Mobile in Mobile, Alabama. He is also the author of A Short Guide to Gospel Generosity: Giving as an Act of Grace. What Is Gospel Generosity?Gospel generosity is giving rooted in the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Generosity is not merely a virtue for the Christian life but a cheerful disposition that springs forth from the gospel. This kind of generosity arises from new life in Christ, is empowered by the Holy Spirit, and reflects the Father's model of grace throughout creation. At its core, gospel generosity isn't just about giving—it's about proclaiming and portraying Christ's saving work in our lives. It signifies a radical transformation of a believer's heart and mind, leading to joyful stewardship of resources in service to God's kingdom.Beyond the Tithe: A Higher CallingOne of the most debated topics surrounding generosity is the concept of tithing. Are Christians called to tithe, or is there a greater expectation? While tithing—giving 10%—is not explicitly required for Christians, the gospel calls us to something far greater. We aren't obligated to give; instead, Christians have an incredible gospel opportunity. We are called to live generously, humbly, selflessly, and with the kingdom of God in mind. This perspective reframes giving not as a rule to follow but as an act of grace and worship, rooted in gratitude for what Christ has done. How the Gospel Transforms Our View of MoneyThe gospel transforms our hearts and minds and revolutionizes how we approach money and stewardship. Martin Luther once said:“There are three conversions in one's life—the conversion of the heart, the mind, and the pocketbook.” When we encounter Christ, our hearts are filled with affection for Him, and our minds are set on heavenly things. However, many Christians struggle to surrender their finances to God fully. You can't hold on to Christ while also holding on to your money.A heart transformed by the gospel desires to honor Christ above wealth. A mind renewed by the gospel prioritizes kingdom values over worldly ones. This transformation shapes every aspect of our financial lives, from earning and saving to spending and giving.Living as Stewards of God's ResourcesWhen our hearts and minds are fully surrendered to Christ, our finances naturally follow. Giving becomes not just an obligation but an act of worship and a reflection of the gospel's transforming power. To explore these ideas further, check out Dr. Nathan W. Harris's book,  A Short Guide to Gospel Generosity: Giving as an Act of Grace. This concise guide offers biblical wisdom and practical insights into living a life of joyful, gospel-rooted generosity. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I have a whole life insurance policy for my mom that we've been paying on for about nine years. Are we just fans of God, or do we truly know Him? This line can be blurry in our daily lives, but Paul's prayer in the book of Ephesians is for us to truly know Him deeply. When we know the Lord better, we have access to Him and His power. Through Him we can do all things, and this gift alone, to be able to know God truly, is one we are not deserving of. Yet, it is given anyway. This is something to celebrate! Join Pastor Shannon Butler as he reads through Ephesians 1:15-23 and analyzes what Paul is saying about the Power of Christ that we have access to.Support the show

Our teacher today is Will Thorndike, co-founder of Compounding Labs and author of the acclaimed book, “The Outsiders.” In our opinion, Will has emerged as one of the most influential and innovative investor minds of the past few decades. And if you care about long-term value creation and the art of capital allocation, chances are you've also benefited from some of his ideas.  In 1994, he founded Housatonic Partners, a pioneering private equity firm known for its unusually long holding periods and its leadership in the search fund space alongside his mentor and Stanford professor Irv Grousbeck. Will helped to originate the modern search fund model, backing early career CEOs to buy and grow businesses with long-term horizons and radically aligned incentives. Since then, he has invested in the majority of the top 20 search fund outcomes to date, including Asurion, which he recently profiled on his podcast 50X.  We explore Will's full arc from the research that led to “The Outsiders” to his decades as an investor to the new frontier he's now helping to shape. We talk about what makes a business truly enduring, why great leadership and resource allocation remain so misunderstood, and how the right people, structure, and alignment enable companies to compound over time. Please enjoy this class with Will Thorndike. As we navigate the intricacies of attachment, I emphasize the detrimental aspects that can lead to increased anxiety, highlighting how our clinging to outcomes, people, emotions, beliefs, and the need for control can fundamentally disrupt our inner peace. We begin by acknowledging the importance of mindfulness, taking a moment to breathe deeply and settle into the present. This simple act serves as a reminder throughout our discussion, inviting listeners to adopt a mindset of calm and reflection. I stress that this episode's focus is on how unhealthy attachments manifest in our lives and subsequently fuel our anxiety. The essence of the anxious mind often revolves around a tight grip on expectations, leading to turmoil when those expectations aren't met.I introduce the concept of attachment theory, differentiating between the various styles—secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized—while also illustrating how these styles can shape our experiences and relationships. The exploration goes beyond these styles to consider our broader attachment to how life "should" unfold, which creates an added layer of anxiety when reality diverges from those expectations. #anxiety #attachment #lettinggo #compassion #anxiousmind #mentalhealth #selfcompassion #mindfulness #emotionalwellbeing #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #anxietyrelief #anxietyawareness #wellbeing #innerpeace #presentmoment #anxietyhelp #endthestigma #youarenotalone #healing #stress #stressrelief #emotionalhealth #selfcare #wellnessjourney #mindful #recoveryispossible #itsokaytonotbeokay #positivementalhealth #attachmenttheory #secureattachment #anxiousattachment #avoidantattachment #disorganizedattachment #attachmentstyles #relationshipgoals #healthyrelationships #attachmentissues #breakthecycle #attachmenthealing #ACP #anxietycoachespodcast #GinaRyan Learn more about your ad choices. If you need to hire 1 person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world have the hustle and grit to deliver.  www.InsightGlobal.com/LearningLeader Katie Gatti Tassin is the author of the "Money with Katie" newsletter and podcast, both acquired by Morning Brew in 2022. Katie provides fresh personal finance advice with a unique outlook, coupled with deep, self-taught knowledge.  Before founding Money with Katie in 2020, she worked professionally in marketing and user experience design for Southwest Airlines, Dell Technologies, and Meta. She's the author of Rich Girl Nation: Taking Charge of Our Financial Futures. Notes: If you're not curious about it, you're not going to give it your all. But if you are, you can become relentless. Chase your curiosity and obsessions with great rigor. That passion and love for whatever the thing is can lead to big opportunities in your life. Do you want 100% of a grape or 25% of a watermelon? Advice Katie got when she was considering accepting the offer to be acquired by Morning Brew. The importance of having a coach. Katie talked about the life-changing impact her coach, Elizabeth, has had on her. Ambitious, motivated people who have high standards need help, too. In fact, maybe as much as anyone. It's worth it to invest in yourself and find a person to talk with 1 on 1. Parents - High expectations, straight A's or bust. Driven, hard to turn it off. The Morning Brew acquisition - Money with Katie. Worked at Meta and did Money with Katie at the same time. Left for the acquisition. Austin Rief (CEO) DM'd her on Twitter and made an offer during their first 30-minute conversation. Big lesson - Your IP is everything. Book Dedication - “To the anonymous guy who 'works in finance' that used to relentlessly comment on my nascent website in 2018, urging me to quit writing about money and 'keep it to myself. I hope you're well." Acknowledgments - “Mom, for all those quiet days spent sitting on the floor of the Lents branch library or wandering the stacks at Barnes & Noble. Dad, for spending your time after work at the kitchen table with me every time my homework involved numbers, and for being my number one fan.” How much money do you need to be financially free? Katie breaks down the 4% rule, why it works, and how it can be personalized and optimized for each person's retirement needs. High Standards Can Be a Double-Edged Sword – "I am an incredibly driven person because of the people who raised me... But I also have a really hard time with turning it off. I can become very narrow-minded and obsessive about the things that I'm doing." Turn Critics Into Fuel – Katie dedicated her book to an anonymous finance professional who told her to "quit writing about money" and "keep it to herself." Sometimes the best fuel comes from those who doubt you. Money Transparency in Families Creates Advantages – Katie's parents openly discussed finances, including sharing their income. "I never really thought of it as something that was taboo... made it a lot easier for me now as an adult." The Power of Life Coaching for Entrepreneurs – After initial skepticism, Katie found a life coach who told her, "You are way too in your head. You are way too concerned with the minutia. You don't even know where you wanna go yet." Intellectual Property is Everything in Negotiations – "Your intellectual property is the most valuable thing that you are negotiating over... The primary value of the thing that I'm spending 60 hours a week working on needs to be accruing to me." The 25x Rule for Financial Freedom – Based on the 4% withdrawal rule: "Once you have accumulated 25 times your annual spending... You should theoretically be able to use 4% of that amount every year, withdraw it, and live on it." Marriage Changes Everything Financially – "Marriage is the most legally significant thing you will do in your life other than die, and you don't get so much as a leaflet about how your rights have just changed." Prenups Aren't About Distrust – They're about legal protection, especially for anyone who might leave the workforce. "If you spend decades out of the workforce... You need to ensure that if your partnership ends someday... You will have a certain amount of income." Desire Drives Excellence – "If you're not curious about it, you are not going to give it your all... There is such a difference in outcomes. If I am really into something that I'm working on, it's gonna be second to none."
