If I showed you some photos of yourself and asked you to pick out the one that most accurately represented what you really looked like – could you do it? Listen as I begin this episode by explaining why you most likely could not. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/06/150623200016.htm?utm_source=chatgpt.com Common knowledge is something that I know that you know, and you know that I know you know it! And so usually, we never discuss it. Sounds confusing but without common knowledge life would be amazingly difficult and tedious as you are about to discover when you listen to my conversation with Steven Pinker. Steven is a professor of psychology at Harvard University and is the author of 12 books. His latest is When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows . . .: Common Knowledge and the Mysteries of Money, Power, and Everyday Life (https://amzn.to/46oYRdG). Some people are chronically late. It's as if they have a completely different attitude toward time. Yet their tardiness can infuriate people who are punctual and expect other people to be. Is it rudeness or is it just a different “time personality”? There was an interesting article about this in the New York Times not long ago that got quite a bit of attention. Joining me in this episode is the author of that article, Emily Laber-Warren. She heads the health and science reporting program at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York and has been a staff editor at Popular Science, The Sciences, Scientific American Mind, and Women's Health. This episode is a courageous look beyond the veil of "normalcy" to question the very nature of reality itself.Justin challenges the core of our beliefs, arguing that in a world of paradoxes, the only thing any of us can truly know is our own consciousness—the simple awareness of "I am". He shares how he has used single-pointed concentration meditation to gain control over his mind, manage his symptoms, and find peace in a brain that was once overwhelmingly loud. This is not just a discussion about mental health; it's a guide to separating your true self from the chaos of your thoughts. This is a must-listen for anyone who has ever felt controlled by their own mind.       In this heartfelt and thought-provoking episode, I sat down with Kenny, a leadership and scaling coach whose life story is as inspiring as his professional insights. What started as a personal journey rooted in his adoption experience—and sparked by his 7-year-old son's curiosity—has grown into a mission of love and impact. Kenny and his wife have fostered 18 children and adopted two, creating a home rooted in compassion, resilience, and intentional support. Even during a temporary pause due to his wife's health, their commitment to fostering remains unwavering. Kenny draws powerful parallels between parenting and leadership, underscoring how creating emotionally safe spaces at home aligns deeply with creating thriving cultures in business. The Power of Frontline Innovation We explored the importance of amplifying voices from every level of an organization, not just the C-suite. I emphasized how game-changing ideas often come from those closest to the work. By encouraging team-wide input and running trial initiatives, organizations can unlock innovation and prevent talent loss to entrepreneurship. Kenny echoed this, highlighting the importance of shared decision-making in keeping a company culture agile and engaging. Turnover, Claims, and Culture Employee turnover is costly—not just in productivity but also in well-being. Kenny and I discussed the direct connection between poor leadership and rising mental health claims, which have surged by 72% over the last two years. The culprit? Often, it's a lack of training and support for people managers. We unpacked the real-world impact of poor management and how it contributes to disengagement, burnout, and leave-of-absence claims. The fix? Equip leaders early. Invest in training. Create human-centered workplaces. Frameworks Aren't One-Size-Fits-All Kenny shared his perspective on adapting leadership frameworks to fit the unique DNA of each organization. Drawing a culinary analogy, he explained that understanding your ingredients—your people, culture, and constraints—is essential before applying a recipe. We agreed: effective leadership requires flexibility, not rigidity. Kenny cautioned against “framework addiction,” a trap where leaders over-rely on cookie-cutter solutions, and instead promoted a problem-first mindset that focuses on results, not just tools. Lead to Scale: A Blueprint for Growth Kenny walked us through his Lead to Scale leadership model—a framework that begins with leading oneself, expands to developing teams, and culminates in scaling entire organizations. At its core are three pillars: awareness, alignment, and accountability. He shared how this model helped a client grow revenue and expand geographically, proving that these principles transcend industries and stages of growth. Notably, Kenny highlighted the 10-year leadership development gap, where many managers are promoted long before receiving any formal leadership training. Leadership Is a Journey, Not a Title We closed our conversation reflecting on the long game of leadership: growth, mentorship, and the need for constant self-awareness. We acknowledged the sobering truth that many businesses fail not because of a lack of vision, but because of poor planning and an underdeveloped leadership infrastructure. Kenny also gave us a sneak peek into his podcast, How Leaders Think, which is nearing its 100th episode—a testament to his dedication to empowering leaders at every level.

    196. Are SAF and Marine Green Fuels worth the Carbon Reductions? - Sept25

Aviation and marine transport together account for approximately 15% of global oil consumption—a substantial share driven by sectors that are among the hardest to decarbonize. Unlike road transport or power generation, these industries face unique constraints: the high energy density required, long operating ranges, and the limitations of onboard storage mean that electrification or hydrogen solutions remain technologically and economically unfeasible in the near to medium term.In response, policymakers and industry leaders are increasingly focusing on low-carbon liquid fuels as transitional solutions. Chief among these are Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA), both of which can be used in existing infrastructure and engines with minimal modification. These fuels can be of biological origin—typically derived from waste oils, agricultural residues, or purpose-grown feedstocks—or synthetic origin, such as Power-to-Liquid (PtL) fuels produced via electrolysis and CO₂ capture.Globally, significant efforts are underway to scale up these alternatives. The European Union, for instance, has introduced blending mandates through the ReFuelEU Aviation and FuelEU Maritime regulations, requiring a gradual increase in the share of SAF or other renewable fuels used in transport. These policies are supported by a range of subsidies, research programs, and emissions trading mechanisms (e.g., EU ETS inclusion for aviation and shipping), all designed to stimulate supply and demand for cleaner fuels. To help unpack the complex interplay of technical, economic, and regulatory challenges, we invited Callum McPherson, Chair of its Sustainable Business Forum and Head of Commodities at Investec, a London-based investment bank. With a mandate to structure and trade a wide array of fuels, Callum provides real-world insight into how these markets are evolving—and the limitations that remain. Some of the key topics Laurent and Gerard explored with Callum included: Which green fuels have realistic pathways to scale, and which are unlikely to work due to poor energy return on investment, unsustainable feedstocks, or prohibitively high costs? How will regional mandates, particularly those in the EU, impact global markets—and will they be enforceable in practice? What role will synthetic fuels play, given their dependence on clean electricity, high capital costs, and still-immature supply chains? What emerges is a highly nuanced picture. Despite the political momentum and technological progress, the fundamental economics remain challenging. Current estimates suggest that the cost of abating one tonne of CO₂ in these sectors can easily exceed €1,000 requiring considerable public support, whether stick or carrot.High costs and regulatory uncertainties are probably some of the reasons why Shell has decided not to complete the construction of a SAF refinery in Rotterdam.Laurent and Gerard conclude that while green fuels are a necessary part of the decarbonization toolkit, they are far from a silver bullet. The financial and ecological trade-offs are significant, and at current cost trajectories, these fuels will make only a marginal dent in overall emissions curves—at least in the near term.  Finally, an excellent book on the general topic of biofuels by Michael Grunwald:  "We Are Eating the Earth: The Race to Fix Our Food System and Save Our Climate."“The views and opinions expressed by Callum Macpherson are his own and are provided for information purposes only and should not be construed as investment advice, recommendation, or an offer to buy or sell any financial products or commodities. One month has passed in the college football season as Week 4 is now in the books. There were some dominant performances that led the way including #17 Texas Tech dominating #16 Utah at the line of scrimmage. The college football world has been interested to see the Red Raiders get tested after an offseason of revamping their team through the portal, spending heavily on NIL. On Saturday, at least, that plan paid off as the Red Raiders came out of Salt Lake City with a 34-10 victory. Andy Staples, Ross Dellenger and Steven Godfrey discuss if Texas Tech is the best team in the Big 12. Plus, there was a big matchup in Norman, Oklahoma as #11 Oklahoma squeaked out a win over #22 Auburn. The guys discuss what this matchup told us about each school and what their season may look like going forward.Later, they discuss another dominant win as #19 Indiana got their first win over a Top 10 team in five years with a 63-10 beatdown of #9 Illinois. Was Illinois overrated or is Indiana actually that good? The guys discuss. They also take a look at a few other embarrassing losses from Saturday. Oklahoma State, Clemson and North Carolina all look like programs in disarray. Can any of them salvage a season, or is it doom and gloom for them this year? The guys chat about each program's issues. Lastly, the American Conference has been very impressive this season and people have started to take notice. The guys feel confident the winner of this conference is going to the CFP, but who might that be? They discuss the various options of who may claim that spot and what the success of this conference means for college football. Can the non-Power 4 conferences still be successful in the current age of college football? The American Conference's success seems to suggest so. Catch up on anything you missed from a wild Week 4 on College Football Enquirer.(5:47) - #17 Texas Tech dominates #16 Utah(15:11) #11 Oklahoma survives #22 Auburn(24:01) - #21 Michigan hands Nebraska their first loss(29:00) - Wisconsin continues to fall apart(34:30) - #19 Indiana dominates #9 Illinois(37:40) - Oklahoma State continues disastrous season(40:45) - Clemson's worst start under Dabo Swinney(44:06) - North Carolina struggles under Bill Belichick(52:07) - The American Conference continues to impress(1:00:25) - Who else impressed in Week 4?(1:07:02) - Looking at Week 5 Subscribe to the College Football Enquirer on your favorite podcast app:

Summary In this episode, Andy talks with Jess Baker, business psychologist and author of The Super-Helper Syndrome: A Survival Guide for Compassionate People. Jess helps leaders, project managers, and anyone who tends to take on too much work avoid burnout, preserve self-worth, and build healthier ways of helping. The conversation digs into what “Super-Helper Syndrome” means, how over-helping can lead to exhaustion, resentment, exploitation, or harsh self-criticism, and what beliefs often drive us into that pattern. Jess shares actionable tools for setting boundaries, recognizing irrational helper beliefs, and changing our mindset, including asking “What kind of help is needed here?” to building systems that support sustainable helping. If you're leading projects, teams, or supporting others, these insights will help you avoid overcommitment while still being compassionate.  Sound Bites “Helping others to the detriment of your own wellbeing is something many of us do without noticing.” “When you struggle to say no to requests for help, your relationships are lopsided. You deny your own needs.” “Exhaustion, resentment, exploitation and self-criticism are the four adverse impacts of super-helper syndrome.” “Compassion is when you decide you have to do something to alleviate someone's suffering.” “'What kind of help is needed here?' rather than just 'How can I help?'” “Your self-worth does not depend upon helping people.” “Healthy helping is about recognizing who, how and when you help, and having boundaries that are not porous.” Chapters 00:00 Introduction 02:01 Start of Interview 02:23 What Got You Started Exploring Empathy and Compassion? 05:15 Cognitive Empathy vs Emotional Empathy 08:02 How Do You, As a Clinician, Use Empathy Without Being Overwhelmed? 10:07 The Four Forms of Help 18:52 Stakeholder Scenario: Balancing Autonomy and Dependency in Helping 25:01 When Did Jess Help? In this episode review (Season 14, Ep. 372), Andrea revisits interviews with Dr. Dan Siegel to explore Mindsight—the focused attention that helps us see and reshape our own minds and connect with others. She breaks down how Mindsight underpins social and emotional intelligence and offers practical ways to develop it, including theory-of-mind practice, the Wheel of Awareness, and daily narrative reading. This week, in our review of EP 28 with Daniel J. Siegel, MD  and his book Mindsight, we learned: ✔ A deeper definition of Mindsight or seeing the mind in another Mindsight, a term coined by Dr. Daniel J. Siegel, is the ability to perceive the mind within ourselves and others. It goes beyond simply observing behavior; it's about sensing thoughts, feelings, intentions, and perspectives that aren't immediately visible. This skill allows us to look beneath the surface of words and actions, to “see” the mind behind them, which leads to deeper empathy, better relationships, and stronger social intelligence. ✔ What is Theory of Mind and how can this skill help us to connect and understand others better Theory of Mind (ToM) is closely related to Mindsight—it refers to our ability to attribute mental states (beliefs, desires, knowledge, intentions) to ourselves and to others. In simple terms, it's recognizing that other people have thoughts and feelings that may be different from our own. This skill is essential for meaningful communication, conflict resolution, and collaboration, because it helps us predict how someone might react, understand why they feel a certain way, and respond with compassion rather than judgment. ✔ What is Theory of Mind and how can this skill help us to connect and understand others better Theory of Mind (ToM) is closely related to Mindsight—it refers to our ability to attribute mental states (beliefs, desires, knowledge, intentions) to ourselves and to others. Name Emotions – Practice labeling your own emotions and noticing them in others (“I feel frustrated” → “They might be anxious”). Perspective-Taking Exercises – Put yourself in someone else's shoes: If I were in their position, what would I be experiencing? Read Fiction Regularly – Choose stories with complex characters and notice how your mind tracks their thoughts and motives. Practice Curiosity in Conversations – Instead of assuming, ask open-ended questions to better understand another's perspective. Mindfulness Training – Strengthen your awareness of your inner world, which improves your ability to tune into the inner world of others. The episode also emphasizes the importance of face-to-face relationships for learning and development, contrasts relational learning with screen-based approaches, and provides actionable tips educators and listeners can use to strengthen empathy, self-awareness, and relational skills. Welcome back to SEASON 14 of The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we connect the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning and emotional intelligence training for improved well-being, achievement, productivity and results—using what I saw as the missing link (since we weren't taught this when we were growing up in school), the application of practical neuroscience. I'm Andrea Samadi, and seven years ago, launched this podcast with a question I had never truly asked myself before: (and that is) If productivity and results matter to us—and they do now more than ever—how exactly are we using our brain to make them happen? Most of us were never taught how to apply neuroscience to improve productivity, results, or well-being. About a decade ago, I became fascinated by the mind-brain-results connection—and how science can be applied to our everyday lives. That's why I've made it my mission to bring you the world's top experts—so together, we can explore the intersection of science and social-emotional learning. We'll break down complex ideas and turn them into practical strategies we can use every day for predictable, science-backed results. Which brings up to today's episode #372, where we will take Dr. Dan Siegel's concept of Mindsight, to the next level. On our last EP 371 with Dan Siegel, PART 1 of our review of a very early interview EP 28[i], recorded in November 2019, we covered the importance of: Understanding and Applying Mindsight which is “the way we focus our attention on the internal world. It's how we bring consciousness to our own thoughts and feelings, and how we attune to the inner world of someone else. Mindsight gives us insight into ourselves, and empathy for others.” Mindsight is a concept Dr. Siegel felt to be critical for us to develop noting this skill to be “the basis for social and emotional development.” He notes, that it's a teachable set of skills that we can teach in school, and once mastered is a truly transformational tool.  In his book, Mindsight he explains this concept further: “Mindsight is a kind of focused attention that allows us to see the internal workings of our own minds. (and we've been talking about how important it is to go within, for true change in our lives to occur). It helps us to be aware of our mental processes without being swept away by them, (which) enables us to get ourselves off the autopilot of ingrained behaviors and habitual responses, and moves us beyond the reactive emotional loops we all have a tendency to get trapped in. It lets us “name and tame” the emotions we are experiencing, rather than being overwhelmed by them. Consider the difference between saying “I am sad” and “I feel sad.” Similar as those two statements may seem, there is actually a profound difference between them. “I am sad” is a kind of self-definition, and a very limiting one. “I feel sad” suggests the ability to recognize and acknowledge a feeling, without being consumed by it. The focusing skills that are part of mindsight make it possible to see what is inside, to accept it, and in the accepting to let it go, and, finally, to transform it into a NEW reality. You can also think of mindsight as a very special lens that gives us the capacity to perceive the mind with greater clarity than ever before. This lens is something that virtually everyone can develop, and once we have it we can dive deeply into the mental sea inside, exploring our own inner lives and those of others. A uniquely human ability, mindsight allows us to examine closely, in detail and in depth, the processes by which we think, feel, and behave. And it allows us to reshape and redirect our inner experiences so that we have more freedom of choice in our everyday actions, (giving us) more power to create the future, to become the author of our own story. Another way to put it is that mindsight is the basic skill that underlies everything we mean when we speak of having social and emotional intelligence.” (Dr. Daniel J Siegel, Mindsight, Location 105, Kindle Edition). In this episode, we dive into the extraordinary journey of an ordinary man who was thrust into the legal system and, through relentless struggle, uncovered the hidden machinery driving family courts, governments, and corporations. What began as a personal battle over divorce and child support revealed a multi-trillion-dollar industry built on negotiable instruments, exposing how the system profits off human lives. Through years of trial, error, and perseverance, Cal Washington discovered the ancient roots of Lex Mercatoria—the Law Merchant—and how commerce, not justice, underpins the courts we think serve us. From facing jail time to holding judges accountable, to creating notices of liability that caused officials and apparently even a royal to step down, his story is one of grit, awakening, and empowerment. This is an eye-opening conversation that challenges everything you thought you knew about law, power, and freedom.Time Stamps(00:00) Episode Teaser(00:27) Opening Conversation(04:29) Introducing Cal Washington(06:51) Cal Washington's Legal Journey(08:39) The Divorce Industry Exposed(14:36) Understanding the Legal System(17:18) The Power of Commerce in Law(21:39) Cal's Personal Legal Battles(27:15) The Role of Law Merchant(35:10) Courtroom Experiences and Strategies(44:24) The Impact of Legal Knowledge(48:14) Unexpected Arrest and Meeting a Lawyer(49:24) Legal Maneuvers and Promissory Note(51:30) Escalation and Government Response(55:11) Empower Movement and Smart Meters(58:55) Notices of Liability and Public Impact(01:03:21) Financial System and Wealth Transfer(01:10:47) Personal Compliance and Legal Strategies(01:19:54) Biblical Contracts and Legal Principles(01:23:39) Future Vision and System Reset(01:28:53) Practical Applications and Final ThoughtsGuest Linkshttps://www.inpowermovement.org/hereforthetruth ($50 discount available)Connect with UsJoin our membership Friends of the TruthSubscribe to Here for the Truth FridaysTake the Real AF Test NowDiscover Your Truth Seeker ArchetypeWatch all our episodesConnect with us on TelegramAccess all our links

In this episode of On the Brink with Andi Simon, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Laurie Hirsch Schultz, a transformational coach, nonprofit leader, and founder of LHS Coaching. Laurie's career journey—from over two decades in corporate marketing at Kraft Foods and Visa to becoming a trusted coach and community leader—offers a powerful reminder that change is not something to resist but to embrace. Laurie brings to her clients a unique blend of corporate savvy, coaching expertise, and a deep passion for helping people find clarity when they reach what she calls inflection points. These are moments when life nudges—or pushes—you to recognize that what once worked no longer does. Whether it's career dissatisfaction, a health scare, a layoff, or simply the realization that you're ready for something new, inflection points are opportunities to redefine what comes next. From Corporate Success to Coaching Purpose Laurie enjoyed a successful career at Kraft Foods and Visa, thriving in marketing and strategy roles. But after more than 20 years, she hit her own inflection point: the work no longer aligned with her values. Rather than pushing through, she took a bold step. She negotiated an exit plan, gave herself what she called a “reboot year,” and invested in coaching and reflection. That pause was pivotal. Laurie discovered that what she loved most wasn't just the marketing itself, but the mentoring, coaching, and team-building along the way. Out of that realization grew her coaching practice, where she now helps others navigate the complexity of transition. The Power of a Personal Compass Laurie's process begins with what she calls a personal compass. This is more than a vision statement—it's a grounding framework built around four key elements: Core Values – The non-negotiables that must guide decisions and actions. Mission – How you want to impact the world and show up in it. Energies – The activities, relationships, and pursuits that light you up. Capabilities – The skills and strengths that differentiate you, not just what you can do, but what you want to do. This compass serves as a touchstone, allowing clients to navigate life and career changes with greater clarity and confidence. It becomes especially powerful during times of uncertainty, when the “shoulds” of culture or family expectations may cloud what truly matters. Experimentation and the Permission to Change Clarity, however, is not enough. Laurie stresses the importance of experimentation—testing possibilities in small, manageable ways. That might mean scheduling coffee conversations with people in new fields, volunteering in a nonprofit role, or taking on stretch projects at work. These experiments open doors to new opportunities and perspectives while reducing the fear of change. And this is where Laurie offers something many of us forget: permission to change. So often, we keep doing what we've always done—even when it makes us unhappy—because it feels safe or because others have boxed us in. Laurie helps clients give themselves the grace and courage to step through new doors, even if what's on the other side looks different than expected. Coaching as a Gift to Yourself Laurie distinguishes coaching from therapy or consulting. Therapy often looks backward; consulting provides external solutions. Coaching, in contrast, is about partnering with clients to ask the right questions, surface insights, and guide them forward. It is future-focused, client-led, and deeply transformative. As Laurie puts it, coaching is a gift—a purposeful pause that helps you reconnect with who you are, gain confidence in your strengths, and create a future aligned with your values. Watch our video podcast on YouTube. Key Takeaways Listen to the inner voice. When something no longer feels right, don't ignore it. Inflection points are signs it's time for change. Define your personal compass. Ground yourself in your values, mission, energy sources, and unique capabilities. Challenge the “shoulds.” Cultural and personal expectations can limit growth; real transformation begins by questioning them. Experiment your way forward. Try new roles, conversations, or volunteer work to clarify what resonates before making big leaps. Give yourself permission. You don't need to stay stuck in a box. Change is not failure—it's an act of self-leadership. Coaching is an investment. Partnering with a coach can help you pause, reflect, and move forward with confidence and clarity. Laurie's story is a reminder that change, while uncomfortable, is often the catalyst for growth and transformation. We may not always know what's on the other side of the door, but with clarity, experimentation, and courage, we can step through and discover new ways of living and working that truly align with who we are. Darin provides a street-level, moment-by-moment account of his experience at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He recounts the chaos, the destruction, and the personal transformation that occurred as a result. More than just a story of a day in history, Darin's testimony is a powerful call to action for believers to live a life with a greater sense of mission. -- A Personal Revelation: Darin shares how the title of his book came from a powerful prayer he prayed the day after 9/11, where he committed to serving God and getting his "suit dirty" for His glory. -- The Power of Teamwork: He emphasizes the value of serving alongside other believers, noting that he felt timid and less effective when alone, but was bold and confident when working as part of a team. -- Finding a God-Given Purpose: Darin speaks to the struggle many Christian men face with feeling "listless" and lacking a sense of mission. He shares how his career path, though initially a setback, ultimately led him to a place of service. -- A Brush with History: Darin recounts his close proximity to President George W. Bush during the famous "bullhorn" address at Ground Zero, describing the raw emotion of the scene and the powerful connection between the President and the grieving nation. -- The Secret Service Mission: He gives an insider's look into the two main aspects of a Secret Service agent's job—protective assignments and criminal investigations—and how both roles allowed him to "fight the good fight" and make a tangible difference in people's lives. ******* This is the radio program with the music removed. BONUS: Jochen Issing on Building High-Performing Engineering Teams In this BONUS episode, we explore the fascinating journey of Jochen Issing, an engineering leader who brings unique insights from his background as a handball player and band member to building exceptional software development teams. From sports courts and music stages to engineering leadership, Jochen shares practical wisdom on psychological safety, team dynamics, and creating cultures where the best ideas win. From Sports and Music to Software Leadership "As soon as you complain about each other, you are starting to lose." Jochen's unconventional background as a handball player and band member has profoundly shaped his approach to engineering leadership. Drawing from team sports, he discovered that frustration leads to losing in both athletics and technology work. Great players in great teams optimize for the team's results, not individual glory. This translates directly to software development where great engineers slow down to make the team faster, recognizing that collective success trumps individual achievement. The lesson from the handball court is clear: when team members start blaming each other, they create a losing mindset that becomes self-fulfilling. Breaking the 10X Engineer Myth "It's not your success that makes our success, it's our success that makes your success." The mythology of the 10X engineer remains pervasive in software development, but Jochen challenges this with insights from team dynamics. The "hero culture" in companies often emerges when systems are already broken, requiring someone to step in and save the day. While we celebrate these heroes, we forget to ask the crucial question: how did we end up needing a hero in the first place? True high-performing teams don't require heroic individual efforts because they've built sustainable systems and shared knowledge. The goal isn't to eliminate talented individuals but to ensure that even the most skilled engineers can take time off without the organization grinding to a halt. Creating Psychological Safety Through Vulnerability "When psychological safety is missing, I try to ask ignorant questions - expose myself as being the least experienced person in the room." Building psychological safety requires intentional strategies that go beyond good intentions. Jochen employs a counterintuitive approach: when he senses team members hesitating to speak up, he deliberately asks "ignorant" questions to position himself as the least knowledgeable person in the room. This modeling behavior demonstrates that it's safe to admit uncertainty and ask questions. He also builds a culture of "challenging ourselves" by implementing ritualized dissent - assigning someone the specific job of finding flaws in proposed solutions. This prevents the dangerous harmony that can emerge when teams agree too quickly without proper scrutiny. The Power of the Expectation Sheet "I want people to share with me what might even drive them away from the company." Trust forms the foundation of effective team relationships, but building it requires explicit frameworks. Jochen uses an "expectation sheet" (See a prototype here Google Doc)- a document that formalizes mutual expectations between him and his team members. This tool establishes that he wants open, honest communication about everything, including situations that might drive someone to leave the company. The key principle is that he will never share confidential information or use personal disclosures against team members. This creates a relationship where he serves as both a representative of the company when necessary and a personal advocate for his team members when they need support navigating organizational challenges. Team-Centric Productivity and Collaboration "The team is the unit of productivity and delivery, not the individual." Effective engineering leadership requires balancing individual desires with team outcomes. Jochen emphasizes that while people naturally want to say "I did this," the focus must remain on team impact. This involves creating shared understanding of collective goals while still addressing individual needs and growth aspirations. Practical strategies include using on-call rotations to identify knowledge silos, implementing pair programming and mob programming to reinforce collaborative work patterns, and designing tasks that allow individuals to take ownership while remaining embedded in team efforts. The analogy to band dynamics is apt - when someone brings a song idea to the band, it evolves through collaboration into something different and usually better than the original vision. Building Sustainable High Performance "Great engineers slow down to make the team faster - which is how we get better teams." Sustainable high performance emerges when senior engineers invest in lifting the entire team rather than maximizing their individual output. This means senior staff level engineers focus less on their personal contributions and more on forming "tribes" across teams, coaching junior engineers, and building organizational capability. The measure of success shifts from individual heroics to collective achievement - if problems consistently require the same person to fix them, the team hasn't truly succeeded in building sustainable systems and shared knowledge. Recommended Resources for Further Reading Jochen recommends several foundational books for understanding team dynamics and engineering leadership. "The Culture Code" by Daniel Coyle explores the structure of high-performing teams and debunks myths about command-and-control leadership. "Product Development Flow" by Reinertsen provides the scientific foundation behind agile methodologies and explains what teams are really trying to solve. "The Culture Map" by Erin Meyer offers insights on working with diverse cultures and backgrounds to bring out the best in each team member. "Coaching Agile Teams" by Lyssa Adkins serves as a practical guide for developing coaching skills in technical environments. And our very own Scrum Master Toolbox podcast provides ongoing insights and real-world experiences from practitioners in the field. About Jochen Issing Jochen is an engineering leader who's all about building great teams and better developer experiences. Negotiation coach and author Saad A Saad joins Doug to rethink what “the ask” really means—why win-win isn't always wise, how to thrive even with less power, and why tension isn't the enemy but the spark of creativity. Most people think negotiation is stressful or adversarial. But Saad reframes it asan outcome-based conversation—something we're all in daily, whether with clients, colleagues, or family. We dive into why “dominate or be dominated” is outdated, how over-indexing on win-win kills creativity, and why the real skill shows when you're negotiating from a power disadvantage. Saad also shares his framework from In the Lead: Mastering Your Sales Negotiation—a six-principle model that balances assertiveness and empathy like the two wheels of a bike.TL;DR* Negotiation = outcome-based conversation—happens every day, not just in boardrooms.* Win-lose damages trust, but pure win-win leads to weak, uncreative outcomes.* Power imbalances matter less than you think—focus on clarity of outcome.* Tension and friction aren't threats—they're the conditions for respect and innovation.* Assertive empathy: be ambitious in your ask and genuinely curious about the other side.* Context is king: sales, hostage talks, and family dinners require different tools.Memorable lines* “Anytime you're trying to reach an outcome, you're in a negotiation.”* “If you over-index on win-win, you become less ambitious and less creative.”* “Friction isn't failure—it's the fuel for better outcomes.”GuestSaad A Saad — Negotiation expert, sales coach, and author of In the Lead: Mastering Your Sales Negotiation.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/saadasaad/Why this mattersWhether you're closing a deal, pitching an investor, or discussing chores at home, negotiation is everywhere. Reframing it as outcome-based—and learning to balance advocacy with empathy—lets you push for better results without burning bridges.Don't just “hope” your conversations land—design them. It's Friday, September 19th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Iranian Christian denied a retrial for practicing his faith Mehran Shamloui, an Iranian Christian convert from Islam, has been denied a retrial for his case by the Iranian Supreme Court, reports International Christian Concern.  Shamloui was arrested in 2024 and, in March 2025, was sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison simply for participating in a house church. The charges against him included “propaganda activities contrary to Islamic law,” and “membership in groups opposing the state.”  He was released from jail after he posted bail in late 2024. He fled the country and intended to travel to Europe, but was stopped in Turkey. He was deported to Iran in July 2025 because he was missing formal documentation.  Shamloui is currently serving his sentence in Iran's Evin Prison, a notoriously deplorable institution known for mistreating its prisoners, including Christians.  Hebrews 13:3 says, “Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.” Iran is an Islamic Republic and a known persecutor of the Christian community. Bibles written in Farsi, the official language of Iran, are strictly prohibited, as is discussing Jesus with Muslims to share the gospel with them. Hadi Ghaemi, the executive director of The Center for Human Rights in Iran, said, “The Christian community in Iran is facing a crisis. The Iranian authorities are abducting growing numbers of Christians and throwing absurd national security charges at them in order to imprison them for years for doing nothing other than peacefully practicing their faith.” NY Attorney General vs. TX Attorney General over Abortion Kill Pill Far-left Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James is intervening in Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's attempt to prosecute an abortionist for mailing abortion kill pills from one state to the other to undermine Texas's pro-life laws, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Paxton first filed his lawsuit in December 2024 against abortionist Margaret Carpenter, founder of the “Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine.”  Paxton alleged that Carpenter “unlawfully provided a Collin County resident with abortion-inducing drugs that ended the life of an unborn child and resulted in serious complications for the mother, who then required medical intervention.” Carpenter is not licensed to practice medicine in Texas. Subsequently, in February 2025, Judge Bryan Gantt of North Texas ordered Carpenter to stop sending abortion kill pills into the state and to pay a $100,000 fine. (Carpenter also faces charges out of Louisiana for the same).  So far, New York officials have protected the abortionist from consequences via the state's shield law, which bars cooperation with other states concerning laws against abortion. Paxton has challenged the shield law and sued the Ulster County, New York clerk who refused to enforce the fine. Americans celebrating Charlie Kirk's assassination held accountable The Secret Service, several U.S. airlines, Office Depot, and Nasdaq said they were among more than 30 employers that have sanctioned or fired employees in reaction to their disturbing statements about the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, reports The Washington Post. Regarding the Secret Service, an agent named Anthony Pough wrote on Facebook, “If you are mourning this guy .. delete me,” in reference to Kirk's killing. Pough accused Kirk of spewing “hate and racism on his show.” Roughly three dozen workers are reported to have been suspended or fired over their responses to Kirk's murder, including employees of Clemson University, MSNBC, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Carolina Panthers. Plus, several local fire departments and school districts said they had also suspended or terminated employees over their remarks. WLBT-TV reports that Lauren Stokes, the executive assistant for the Vice Chancellor of Development at the University of Mississippi, was fired for her anti-Kirk comments. She allegedly wrote, “For decades, yt [white] supremacist and reimagined Klan members like Kirk have wreaked havoc on our communities, condemning children and the populace at large to mass death for the sake of keeping their automatic guns. … So no, I have no prayers to offer Kirk or respectable statements against violence.” WNDU reports that 18-year-old Camryn Giselle Booker, a college student at Texas Tech, was expelled after a video of her publicly celebrating Charlie Kirk's death went viral.  In the video, she is jumping around and yelling at students paying tribute to Kirk on the Lubbock, Texas campus. Listen. BOOKER: “Your homie dead. He got shot in the head. Your homie dead. He got shot in the head.” After Booker was expelled, Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott posted this comment on X. “Definitely picked the wrong school to taunt the death of Charlie Kirk. Thanks Texas Tech!” Felicia Branch, a professor at the University of Arkansas, is on administrative leave over her vile social media post, reports the Arkansas Times. She wrote, “No, I will not pull back from CELEBRATING that an evil man died by the method he chose to embrace.  Don't tell someone who has been targeted by people like him how to feel, how not to post, how not to celebrate, that he can no longer inflict his brand of evil.” She added that Kirk is “an evil person [who] is no longer on this earth causing immense suffering.” Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has called for Professor Felicia Branch to be fired. ABC yanked Jimmy Kimmel over Charlie Kirk comments And yesterday, ABC indefinitely suspended late-night host Jimmy Kimmel for inappropriate comments he made about the assassination of Charlie Kirk, reports Newsbusters.org. Here's the soundbite from Monday night. KIMMEL: “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid, [Tyler Robinson], who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” Conservative talk show host Erik Erikson  called out the leftist comedian. He said, “What Kimmel was doing was participating in the creation of the leftwing talking point that Kirk's assassin was on the right. He did not have to participate. [Kimmel] chose to participate and circulate what was obviously, even on Monday, a lie. On top of that, it was not funny. It was hectoring and cruel.” Erikson reported that the primary reason Kimmel is no longer on the ABC program schedule is because of the influence of Nexstar, a moderately right-leaning group of stations, that controls 32 significant ABC affiliates including New Orleans, Nashville, Syracuse, Albany, and Grand Rapids and Lansing, Michigan. Nexstar decided to stop airing Kimmel's program. Star Spangled Banner's God-honoring fourth verse And finally, on September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key penned the immortal words of “The Star Spangled Banner.” Key was a Washington attorney sent to the British navy to secure the release of a prisoner during the War of 1812. During his mission, the British bombarded Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. The sight of the American flag continuing to fly over the fort despite the barrage inspired the verses in the song. Congress officially made it the national anthem over a hundred years later. The opening verse is well known. But the later verses are more obscure. Listen to David Hedrick, a former Marine, sing the last half of verse four. HEDRICK: “Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! We are God's change agents in the earth. During this week's Walk It Out Wednesday, Touré Roberts takes us deeper into his Sunday word, “The Power to Change,” and reminds us that breakthrough is less about what happens around us and more about being spiritually revived. He also explores our heart health and the need for our faith to be activated so we can walk in the power of God. He breaks down how God's word flows like water, confirmed by His Spirit and revealed in stillness. You too may want to know:· What are some examples of keeping your heart healthy?· How do you heal a sick heart?· How do you know what God wants you to do, and know that He's directing you to it?The most powerful people in God are those who withhold nothing from Him.
