"That is the main difference between storytelling for the ear and writing, is that the cost of revisions is so much higher," says Julia Barton. We have Julia Barton. Julia was the third hire, I think I have that right, with Pushkin Industries, the podcast giant founded by Malcolm Gladwell. She's the executive editor of Pushkin and helped develop Revisionist History and Against the Rules, the latter by the journalist and uber best seller Michael Lewis. She, quite literary, edits with her ears.I met Julia briefly at the Power of Narrative Conference in Boston, where she's also a Nieman Fellow, as her talk followed mine. I did not attend her talk and I feel great shame about that, but my battery was in the negative after my talk and I just needed to disappear, the plight of the introvert. I could have learned a LOT since her talk was about the grammar of audio stories. I atoned by inviting her on the podcast to talk about her auditory journey. So Julia has a cool newsletter called Continuous Wave, which is a weekly newsletter exploring the forgotten history of broadcast and all electronic media. It's very specific, which is what you want from a newsletter. She's the founder of RadioWright, she is @bartona104 on IG. Transparent frameworks and practical tools—like As You Sow's InvestYourValues platform—empower investors to know exactly what they own and avoid greenwashing. Corporate Accountability and the Power of NarrativeIoannis Ioannou shares how ESG outperformance research is nuanced—successful sustainable companies embed responsibility in strategy, not just reporting. He calls for a “positive narrative” that unites all stakeholders: “Transparency is necessary but not sufficient. We need to align corporate action with a system that works within its limits—and tell a compelling, evidence-based story.” Call-to-Action Let's inspire you with one action item to move the needle this week: take a moment to review your own portfolio or investment choices and ask yourself, "How well do they align with your personal values?" Even small shifts can make a big impact over time. If you haven't explored sustainable investing before, start by researching one company or fund that prioritizes environmental or social responsibility. If you would like to help support my mission to multiply disciples, leaders and churches, click here: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/robskinner The Power of Right Now Introduction · Have you ever listened to someone's story and then said, “I'll pray for you.” After saying that you quickly forgot about it and never prayed for the person. · Have you ever had a person pop up in your head and you thought, I wonder how they are doing? I bet that person could use a call. After that thought you quickly moved on and never followed up. · Have you ever felt the impulse to reach out and share with someone and then backed off because you were: Ø Too busy Ø Too tired Ø Afraid of their reaction Instead of acting on that impulse, you let the Spirit's prompting pass away. If you can remember at least one time that happened to you, you understand the importance of living out your faith, “Right Now.” That's why I want to talk to you tonight about the power of “right now.” There are three things that we can start doing that will take our faith from theory to practice every single day. All we need to do is: 1. Encourage right now 2. Connect right now 3. Pray right now 1. Encourage Right Now Paul talks about the power of right now in Ephesians 5:15-20. “15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Paul tells us to be very careful how we live. Why, because the days are evil. That's why we need to realize the power of right now and make the most of every opportunity. Ø Right now people are struggling with temptation Ø Right now disciples are targeted by Satan Ø Right now friends you know are dealing with health issues Ø Right now Christians are considering leaving God and his church Ø Right now people you thought were solid are feeling shaky How can you help? § Encourage people right now § Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit § Share scriptures that encourage you § Praise people § Thank people § Lift people up § Share positively about people who aren't here right now o I really appreciate Stuart. His work in Boston has inspired me and is one of the reasons Pam and I wanted to move here. He is an extremely encouraging person. Often times we know these things and we have positive thoughts about others, but we don't take advantage of the power of now to encourage others. Let's make the most of this opportunity by turning to the person next to you and encourage them with: § Positive words § Gratitude § A scripture § Praise 2. Connect Right Now Let's read Colossians 4:5, “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.” Paul says we need to be wise in how we deal with those aren't following Jesus. We need to make the most of every opportunity. God gives us opportunities every day to help those around us. If we want to see God work in our life, we need to connect every day. On my first Sunday, I was sitting in front of a couple that I could tell were visiting. I introduced myself and they shared they were here for the first time. A few minutes later I saw someone else talking to them and being kind to them. That brother understood the power of right now. At the end of the service, I looked back and they were gone, but I know that brother had exchanged information with them. He had made the most of every opportunity. God gives us opportunities to love and serve those around us every day. We just need to be aware and ready to make the most of every opportunity. Ø When we are at work Ø When we are in an elevator Ø When we are checking out of the store When I arrived, the first thing I did was ask Stuart for some invitation cards to connect when God gave me an opportunity. It's been so much fun to connect and see the power of now: Ø My movers Ø Dunkin Donuts Ø Roche Brothers I think one of the easiest ways aside from reaching out at church on Sunday is simply texting your friends and letting them know what you are doing. It's soft, it's gentle, it's loving and if they're aren't interested they can ignore you. However, a simple text can change a person's life. Let's take advantage of the power of now. Pull out your phone and text a friend or coworker. Just text them something loving like: “Just thinking about you. Hope you are doing well.” If you want to go an extra step, you can add, “I'd love for you to join me this Sunday at church” 3. Pray Right Now How else can we make the most of right now? We can pray for each other in the moment. I can't tell you how many times I've said “I'll pray for you” and then forgot to do it. But then I found a way to avoid that. When someone shares something serious, heavy, or worthy of prayer, I use that as a trigger to pray right then and there. Prayer makes a difference, but if you never follow through, you missed the power of right now. Look at how James describes how powerful prayer really is: “13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. 19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.” James writes that if we or someone we know is going through something, anything-our first response should be to pray. Why? Prayer is powerful and effective. Prayer moves God. God can do anything. He then launches into a story about Elijah, who he says was a normal person just like us. His prayers changed weather patterns. Would you like to save someone from death, bring wanderers back, return people to the truth and cover over a multitude of sins? It all starts with praying. Praying right now. Let's pray right now by asking the person next to us, “What can I pray for you about?” After listening, hold hands and pray for that person. After that let the other person ask, “What can I pray for you about.” After the person shares a need, put your hands on his or her shoulder or hold hands and say a prayer for them. Pray right now. Conclusion Can you imagine how your life would fill up with joy and power if you started making the most of every opportunity? What if on a daily basis you began to: 1. Encourage right now 2. Connect right now 3. Pray right now I believe you would begin to draw closer to God and people and you would be begin to see miracles happen. That's the power of “Right Now.” Ice Cream Social

Masha Gessen and Jason Stanley are two leading experts on autocracy, and they're sounding the alarm. They and their families have escaped totalitarian regimes and oppressive governments; today Gessen and Stanley are pulling back the curtain on the attacks against DEI, trans bodies, civil rights, higher education and more. Is authoritarianism here? Masha Gessen is an acclaimed Russian-American journalist, a Polk Award winning opinion writer for the New York Times and the author of "Surviving Autocracy" and “The Future is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia.” Forced to leave Russia twice, in 2024, a Moscow court convicted them, in absentia to eight years in prison for their reporting on the war in Ukraine. Jason Stanley is a best-selling author and professor whose books include “Erasing History” and "How Fascism Works". He recently left his teaching position at Yale University to relocate to Canada with his family; noting that he is a child of Jewish refugees who fled Nazi Germany. In this historic conversation — the first interview between Gessen and Stanley — the two explore how to be bold in our movements and envision a multi-ethnic democracy. Plus, a commentary from Laura.“What I see now is this regime shifting the self understanding of America, from having these democratic ideals . . . God knows they've been imperfect, to a self identity as loving the United States because we've had these great men in our past, and we've conquered the West, and we can punch you in the nose. And that's not a democratic project. That's like what Putin is doing in Russia.” - Jason StanleyGuests:• Masha Gessen: Opinion Columnist, The New York Times; Author, Surviving Autocracy; Distinguished Professor, Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, CUNY• Jason Stanley: Author, Erasing History & How Fascism Works; Professor, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto Watch the special report released on YouTube; PBS World Channel August 15th, and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). Visit altassetsummit.com to learn how to invest in Alternative Assets.(More links down below.) In this episode of the Directed IRA Podcast, Mark Kohler and Mat Sorensen break down a groundbreaking new executive order from President Donald Trump that could reshape the future of 401(k) investing—by opening the door to alternative assets. For decades, Wall Street and Washington have kept most retirement savers locked into a narrow menu of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs. This executive order flips the script, setting a national policy that every American preparing for retirement should have the option to invest in alternatives—just like the wealthiest institutions do.Mat and Mark explain what “alternative assets” really mean in this context, from real estate and crypto to private equity, commodities, and infrastructure investments. They walk through the specific investments cited in the order, why these options have been off-limits for most 401(k) participants, and how this policy could shift the $8 trillion 401(k) industry toward more choice and freedom for everyday investors. They also unpack the political dynamics, regulatory hurdles, and 180-day timeline for the Department of Labor and SEC to develop new guidance—while emphasizing what you can do right now. If you have an IRA or old 401(k), you can already invest in alternatives today using a self-directed account, bypassing the “check-the-box” limitations of traditional plans.Whether you're a corporate employee stuck with cookie-cutter 401(k) options or a self-directed investor ready to take the reins, this episode will help you understand the stakes, the timeline, and the opportunities in this unprecedented policy shift.Chapters:00:08 - Trump's Executive Order on Alternative Assets02:19 - Defining Alternative Assets02:30 - Learn How to Invest in Alternative Assets(https://altassetsummit.com/)02:48 - List of Alternative Assets - From Trump04:19 - How the Executive Order Could Impact You05:20 - Timeline and Political Landscape09:07 - The Power of Self-Directed Investing12:02 - IRAs: Invest in Alternatives Today14:03- Directed IRA Homepage: https://directedira.com/ Directed IRA Explore (Linktree): https://linktr.ee/SelfDirectedIRA Book a Call: https://directedira.com/appointment/ Other:Mat Sorensen: https://matsorensen.com & https://linktr.ee/MatSorensen KKOS: https://kkoslawyers.comMain Street Business https://mainstreetbusiness.com
California's Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, is standing up to Trump with his Election Rigging Response Act. It's an effort to counter Texas, which at Trump's demand, drew up new congressional districts where voters would likely elect Republican representatives. The new Texas maps could also mean incumbent Democratic representatives could face each other in some districts. It's an effort to keep the House under GOP control in the 2026 midterm elections. Governor Newsom is asking California voters to allow redrawn maps in to keep Republicans from unethically stealing Democratic seats. Newsom wants state lawmakers to allow a November ballot measure where voters would weigh in on his plan to temporarily change districts. We'll talk redistricting and politics with Philip Bump. He is known for his work as a national columnist for The Washington Post and his coverage of politics for The Atlantic Wire. Bump's book “The Aftermath: The Last Days of the Baby Boom and the Future of Power in America” looks at the upheaval in American politics and the U.S. economy. Find him at pbump.com Our segment “This Week in Politics” brings former ABC White House correspondent Jim Avila to the show to talk about current events. We'll sprinkle in some Friday Fabulous Florida and add a dash of Culture Blaster Michael Snyder with movie and streaming reviews and it's a perfect Friday.
In today's Morning Manna, we close Daniel 6 with a powerful display of God's justice and sovereignty. After Daniel's miraculous deliverance from the lions, his accusers face the judgment they intended for him, and King Darius issues a decree declaring the greatness of the living God. These verses remind us that the Lord's kingdom is everlasting, His dominion without end, and His power to save reaches into every circumstance. No matter the schemes of men, God's purposes will prevail, and His servants will be preserved. In today's episode of the Second in Command podcast, Cameron challenges conventional thinking about what it truly means to build a high-performing team.Rather than focusing on surface-level credentials or generic systems training, he dives deep into the often-overlooked soft skills that make or break leadership effectiveness—beginning with the critical, yet frequently neglected, art of interviewing. Drawing from his own experience scaling teams at a massive pace, he shares how operational excellence starts with equipping leaders with real training—not just theory—so they can spot who has genuinely done the work, not just learned how to talk about it.You'll learn how most organizations get stuck teaching people what they do instead of how to do it well, missing out on key elements like situational leadership, delegation, and coaching. Using memorable real-world stories and a few surprising truths, Cameron reveals how misjudging candidates, confusing traits like hard work with tenacity, or using the wrong people to interview for the wrong roles can sabotage a company's potential. He even flips the org chart—literally—to illustrate a leadership mindset grounded in support rather than control.Whether you're scaling a company, hiring your next team member, or trying to sharpen your leadership edge, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on the soft skills that power high-performance cultures. It will make you rethink how you train, who you trust to interview, and what it actually takes to spot a top performer.Want your team to master the 12 essential leadership skills? How do you find joy when the diagnosis feels devastating? How can you become the joyful person God calls you to be—even in the midst of your deepest pain?Author Margaret Feinberg was nearing the completion of a book on joy when she received a life-altering diagnosis: aggressive cancer. What followed was a profound season of wrestling—an honest, raw search to understand what joy truly means when suffering feels overwhelming. Her latest book, **The God You Need to Know: Experience the Holy Spirit's Power and Presence Today**, invites readers to experience that same presence no matter what they're walking through. In this uplifting conversation, Davey and Margaret discuss how to truly show up for others in ways that heal rather than hurt, where joy can be found in suffering, and how to navigate the lingering fear that often follows hardship. If you're in a season where joy feels distant, this episode will encourage you to see that even small acts of sharing joy with others can help awaken it in your own heart as you walk through suffering. Elizabeth Weingarten, a journalist and applied behavioral scientist, shares her journey through the labyrinth of life's uncertainties in our latest episode. As she faced personal challenges in her marriage and career, she found solace and guidance not in conventional advice, but in the words of Rainer Maria Rilke's "Letters to a Young Poet." Elizabeth's new book, "How to Fall in Love with Questions," is a testament to the power of thoughtful inquiry in an uncertain world. She unveils how embracing questions, rather than fearing them, can lead to personal growth and deeper connections. This episode also tackles the importance of resisting the constant pull of technology for quick answers and instead invites listeners to build resilience by living with uncertainty in everyday situations. By nurturing this practice, we discover how to manage life's bigger, more ambiguous questions with courage and self-awareness.Listeners will find inspiration in creating a "questions practice," an approach that fosters curiosity, conversation, community, and commitment. Today's guest is Kathy Sierra. Kathy Sierra is a computer scientist, author, and horse-movement innovator who bridges neuroscience, learning psychology, and equine training. Co-creator of the award-winning Head First programming series and founder of the JavaRanch community, she later turned her expertise in intrinsic motivation toward her lifelong passion for horses. Through her Panther Flow approach, Kathy helps horses and riders unlock confident, curious, and expressive movement, sharing her work worldwide through courses, workshops, and writing. In training and movement, drilling “perfect form” is standard practice. The more we get into how humans learn, the more we realize that “perfect form” is a myth, and learning is a far more complex venture. Using both differential learning (variety) and constraints helps athletes hone in on their own optimal (and robust) technique, without needing to constantly be looking for one “perfect” way to do things. This is not only true in animals, but also in humans and in machine learning. On this week's episode, Kathy covers aspects of training horses using the same motor learning concepts that work best in humans. She also goes into how and why robots learn to move better based on constraints, trial and error, versus a “perfect technique” type of programming. This is a fascinating and wide-ranging discussion on human movement, learning, and sport skill. Today's episode is brought to you by Hammer Strength. What to try: Start with establishing safety and trust before layering complexity. Use observation as your first tool, notice subtle shifts in posture or energy. Match your cues to the learner's readiness, not your agenda. Discovering the Community of Movement – [11:16] She describes how connecting with other movement-minded people broadened her perspective and expanded her toolkit. What to try: Seek out cross-disciplinary conversations, dancers, martial artists, animal trainers. Share drills and games openly; let others adapt them for their setting. Use community feedback as a way to refine your own approach. The Power of Natural Movement – [21:40] Kathy emphasizes that natural, unforced movement often produces the most authentic and sustainable skill. What to try: Design environments that invite natural movement patterns to emerge. Remove overbearing cues, let the body self-organize. Watch for efficiency and ease, not just output. Emotions in Movement and Skill Acquisition – [32:19] She links emotional state to physical learning, noting that fear or tension can block skill development. What to try: Pair challenging tasks with positive emotional experiences. Recognize emotional cues, frustration, joy, hesitation, and adjust tasks accordingly. Celebrate small wins to keep confidence high. The Impact of Coaching on Authenticity – [41:22] Kathy warns that over-coaching can erode authenticity in movement. What to try: Avoid shaping every rep, allow athletes to bring their own style. Use fewer,

When our kids don't have a good repertoire of concept - type words, it makes it difficult for them to do as told, express themselves, or deliver a message, accurately. Today we discuss what concept words are, why they are important AND what you can do to increase understanding at home! This is the fun part! You don't need flashcards. You don't need apps. You already have everything you need to teach these words—just by playing, talking, and living life with your child. I am going to call attention to what you already have and know… so that you can be intentional when you are teaching them. Always cheering you on! New York State is arguably the home to the most tyrannical vaccine regime in the world, bar none. Every year thousands of children are force vaccinated according to the CDC recommended schedule as a mandatory requirement for entering all public, private and parochial schools. Even worse? Religious and philosophical exemptions are banned in NY and doctors are terrified to write medical exemptions due to threats from the state health authorities. And the brave doctors who will write a medical exemption are nearly ALWAYS denied. Not by doctors … but by school administrators. But now, everything has changed in NY as the tides turn against medical tyranny with a landmark decision: “In a major win for medical freedom, a New York federal judge late Tuesday ruled in favor of a preliminary injunction allowing a teenage girl who had been denied a medical vaccine exemption and barred from school to return to classes in September, pending the final outcome of her lawsuit against the school district.” ~ Children’s Health Defense This is a narrow, yet powerful victory which now spares thousands of NY school children from forced vaccination. More importantly, it opens the door for religious and philosophical exemptions to be reinstated in the most tyrannical vaccine regime in the world. Today we talk to Sarah Doe and her attorney Sujata Gibson about their amazing victory and what that means for medical freedom in NYS! My life-changing annual event, The Summit of Greatness, is happening September 12 & 13, 2025. Get your ticket today!I used to work out of a closet. Literally, a cleaning supply closet with a tiny desk. I believed that someday money would find me. What I discovered after years of being broke, angry, and desperate is that wealth doesn't start in your bank account; it starts in your belief system. In this raw solo episode, I'm breaking down the exact mental shifts that took me from sleeping on my sister's couch to building an eight-figure business, including the spiritual identity contract that changed everything and why I now talk to money like it's a person (yeah, it sounds weird, but it works). You'll walk away understanding that you're not broke because of your circumstances—you're broke because of what you believe about money, and that's something you can change starting today.Make Money Easy: Create Financial Freedom and Live a Richer LifeThe Greatness Mindset: Unlock the Power of Your Mind and Live Your Best Life TodayThe Mask of Masculinity: How Men Can Embrace Vulnerability, Create Strong Relationships, and Live Their Fullest LivesThe School of Greatness: A Real-World Guide to Living Bigger, Loving Deeper, and Leaving a LegacyIn this episode you will:Discover why guilt is literally repelling money from your life and how to shift from shame to gratitude when wealth flows to youTransform your limiting beliefs about money by learning the "orange juice principle" that reveals what's really inside you when life applies pressureBreak through the hoarding mentality and understand why holding money too tightly actually blocks more from coming to youMaster the spiritual identity contract technique that rewired my brain from feeling "dumb and unworthy" to becoming a confident wealth creatorLearn the exact phrases to stop saying immediately ("I'm broke," "I can't afford it") and what to say instead to speak wealth into existenceFor more information go to https://lewishowes.com/1810For more Greatness text PODCAST to +1 (614) 350-3960More SOG episodes we think you'll love:Lewis Howes – greatness.lnk.to/1801SCDean Graziosi – greatness.lnk.to/1766SCAlex Hormozi – greatness.lnk.to/1324SC Get more from Lewis! In December 2023, when South Africa accused Israel of genocide before the International Court of Justice, I thought it was wrong to do so. Israel had been attacked. Its defense was legitimate. The blood was on Hamas's hands. But over the last year, I have watched a slew of organizations and scholars arrive at the view that whatever Israel's war on Gaza began as, its mass assault on Palestinian civilians fits the definition of genocidal violence. This is a view now held by Amnesty International, B'Tselem, Human Rights Watch, and the president of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, among many othersOne reason I have stayed away from the word genocide is that there is an imprecision at its heart. When people use the word genocide, I think they imagine something like the Holocaust: the attempted extermination of an entire people. But the legal definition of genocide encompasses much more than that.So what is a genocide? And is this one?Philippe Sands is a lawyer who's worked on a number of genocide cases. He is the author of, among other books, “East West Street,” about how the idea of genocide was developed and written into international law. He is the best possible guide to the hardest possible topic.Mentioned:“What the Inventor of the Word ‘Genocide' Might Have Said About Putin's War” by Philippe Sands“‘Only the Strong Survive.'
