    The Jim Fortin Podcast

Start Your Transformation Now  In this episode of the Jim Fortin Podcast, Jim explores what it really means to experience freedom and independence—not just in the external world, but within ourselves. Building on his previous discussion about “seniority,” he reveals how true liberation comes from recognizing your spiritual authority, not from wealth, status, or nationality. If you've been seeking more ease in your finances, health, or life path, Jim makes a compelling case that reclaiming your seniority is the missing key.  Diving deeper, Jim challenges cultural narratives around patriotism, belief systems, and identity that often mask as freedom but actually limit us. He unpacks how our upbringing and societal conditioning cause us to give away our power, and why managing your energy and attention is crucial for regaining it. With personal stories—including a raw account of his 39-month house build—and wisdom from his mentor Don Javier, this episode offers both spiritual insight and practical reflection on how to reclaim the independence we all crave.  This episode is your wake-up call to stop seeking freedom externally and start remembering who you already are: a powerful soul with built-in seniority. If you're ready to step into true sovereignty, this is a must-listen.  What You'll Discover in This Episode:  Why We're All Born With Seniority (02:49) You don't have to earn freedom—you came into this life with cosmic power already built in.  How Socialization and Domestication Strip Our Power (05:46) From childhood conditioning to national identity, we unknowingly give away our spiritual authority.  Your Life is the Output of How You Manage Your Energy (09:11) Jim compares your life to a factory—what you create reflects how well you manage your seniority.  A Personal Lesson: When Chaos Hijacked Jim's Power (11:59) Jim shares how his house-building process derailed his energy—and what brought him back on track.  Freedom Begins With Attention, Not Action (15:13) Managing your attention in the 3D world is the gateway to reclaiming inner power.  How Belief Systems and Patriotism Replace Seniority (21:04) Jim explains how societal labels and even religion can brand us, masking our true spiritual freedom.  A Spiritual Person Asks Nothing of No One (26:53) What Don Javier taught Jim about sovereignty, asking Source—not society—for support.  The Hidden Cost of Attachment (29:00) Freedom also means releasing the ego's grip—because what you cling to, controls you.  Discovering Your True Power as Soul (32:00) Jim closes with a powerful invitation: Know yourself as soul, and you'll know true freedom.  Listen, apply, and enjoy!  Transformational Takeaway  Your true independence isn't found in your passport, your bank account, or your job title. It's in your seniority—your deep knowing that you are soul, Source, and creator. When you stop letting beliefs, fears, and attachments define you, you'll remember the truth: you are free because you are. Let go of the need to control, release the illusions of security, and return to the inner sovereignty that was never lost—only forgotten. Freedom isn't out there. It's already within you.  Let's Connect:  Instagram | Facebook | YouTube | LinkedIn  LIKED THE EPISODE?  If you're the kind of person who likes to help others, then share this with your friends and family. Whether it's tracing a family tree back generations or holding on to stories told around the dinner table, genealogy offers a powerful sense of connection—a connection that can shape identities, claims of property, and even arguments for freedom. But genealogy isn't just a modern-day hobby. In early America, genealogy was a deeply consequential practice with social, political, and legal implications. Understanding your audience's psychology is the key to crafting communication that resonates.Persuading others isn't about magic spells or mind-reading tricks. According to Emily Falk, the real secret is simpler: know what your audience finds relevant, and you'll be able to craft a message that resonates.Falk is a professor of communication, psychology, and marketing at the University of Pennsylvania, Vice Dean of the Annenberg School of Communication, and director of the Communication Neuroscience Lab. In her book What We Value: The Neuroscience of Choice and Change, she reveals that our brains have what she calls a "social relevance system" — our ability to understand what other people are thinking and feeling. "I use social relevance as this kind of catchall for these thoughts about what other people are thinking and feeling, which also helps us predict what they're gonna do and how we might communicate successfully with them," she explains. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Falk and host Matt Abrahams explore how to put this insight into practice, from the power of storytelling to leveraging "neural synchrony" to create shared understanding. Whether you're motivating a team or influencing a customer, Falk offers science-backed strategies for tapping into your audience's psychology and communicating with relevance.Episode Reference Links:Emily FalkEmily's Book: What We ValueEp.39 Brains Love Stories: How Leveraging Neuroscience Can Capture People's EmotionsEp.188 Mind Reading 101: To Know What Your Audience Thinks, Just Ask  Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:47) - Neuroscience & Behavior Prediction (04:05) - Brain Systems in Persuasion (05:28) - Tailoring Messages for Impact (08:06) - Psychological Closeness & Relevance (10:34) - Power of Storytelling (13:48) - Neural Synchrony & Shared Meaning (15:33) - Better Conversations Through Sync (20:11) - Rapid-Fire Q&A with Emily Falk (24:23) - Conclusion  ********This Episode is brought to you by Strawberry.me. Climate Shocks Are Redefining Energy Security

Many parts of the US have experienced brutal, deadly heat in recent weeks—and there's plenty of summer left. Intense rainfall, made more likely by warming, dropped more than 15 inches of rain in central Texas, claiming more than 130 lives. In addition to the devastating human toll these weather events take, they expose critical vulnerabilities in our energy infrastructure. Power grids are seeing tremendous demand from air conditioning, not to mention other factors including data centers. And of course, extreme weather events cause shocks that go well beyond power outages; they damage transmission lines and cascade across other critical infrastructure like water systems and healthcare facilities. The question isn't whether climate change is reshaping energy security—it's how quickly we can adapt. As traditional definitions of national security expand to include climate threats, what will it take to build truly resilient energy systems. This week, Bill Loveless speaks with Kate Guy about how extreme summer weather events are redefining energy security. Kate is a senior fellow and managing director of the geopolitics of climate change and the energy transition at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia SIPA. And Americans now await the effects of Republicans' massive bill cutting taxes and expanding immigration enforcement while slashing popular programs. We check in on Trump's ambitions and the ways Congress and the courts are expanding, or checking, his presidential power. This episode marks a milestone—400 episodes of Gospel Spice! In this special group conversation, Stéphanie Rousselle welcomes Angel Omoruan, Ros Evans, and Lindsay Sterious to reflect on God's enduring goodness, the landscape of inner growth, and the beauty of vulnerability within Christian community. Stephanie and her friends reflect on the importance of serving “the one,” being open to “hidden spaces” where ministry might not be grand but is deeply significant. God's presence is not limited to moments of solitude or to times of communal support. Both are necessary, and God moves in each. Big announcement! Sign up for our Prayer Course at gospelspice.com/prayer The Power of Community: The “Turtle Formation” Ros kicks things off by revisiting her journey toward understanding her true nature as an introvert. Despite often appearing energetic and talkative, she recognizes that she draws strength from solitude. She introduces the term “turtling”—retreating inward to recharge. Introversion isn't a weakness or escape, but a necessary, God-given rhythm for many. The “turtle formation” provides a picture of believers locking arms, forming a shield for one another in times of attack or weakness. Lindsay and Ros share stories of community prayer sustaining them in difficulty. Ros notes, “find the people who are willing to turtle with you…that is needed to stand firm in truth.” “Turtling” can become unhealthy when it turns into disengagement and numbness. While retreating is sometimes needed for healing and reflection, it must be balanced with healthy connection to God and others. In prolonged withdrawal, we risk isolation and disconnection from the very relationships that God uses for our spiritual growth. God's Lessons through Life Transitions and Challenges Angel relates to Ros's introversion, recounting how recent life changes exposed emotions she hadn't faced before. Like Ros, she found that retreating—turtling—was partly God's way of protecting her and prompting introspection. However, she also describes God's gentle promptings to re-engage with others, learn to lament, extend grace, and embrace vulnerability. Angel brings in the “turtle formation” used by Roman soldiers. This image of locked shields captures how Christian community can protect and carry one another. There's wisdom in both knowing when to retreat for healing and when to rejoin the ranks for mutual encouragement. Community as Spiritual Armor Lindsay adds her own testimony of being “carried” by her community through a difficult season involving her daughter's health. She describes a profound experience of being prayed for—allowing herself to be vulnerable, supported, and reminded that the body of Christ is meant to shield one another. This spiritual “turtle formation” is a source of strength, comfort, and tangible experience of God's care. The Value of Vulnerability Angel reflects on the difficulty—and gift—of being vulnerable, especially when God calls us to serve. She shares that being present and obedient in the small, unnoticed moments often becomes a blessing, not only for others, but for ourselves. By being honest, especially when we struggle, we open space for God to work uniquely through us. Ros sums it up: “when you know the Holy Spirit has you at a place in a moment, you forget about everything…and by the time I finish, the person's getting blessed and I'm getting blessed too.” Stephanie highlights how we often wait for “big” moments, but Jesus values our faithfulness in serving the “one”—whether a child, a mentee, or a congregation member. She remarks, “let's just focus on what really, really matters,” echoing the importance of focusing on small daily acts of love and service. God in the Quiet and in the Crowd The Christian walk is not about perfection, but humility, honesty, and interdependence. Whether you're serving quietly, struggling privately, or standing “in turtle formation” with others, God sees, sustains, and works through it all. Be encouraged to walk vulnerably, faithfully, and together. Key Takeaways: Embrace your God-given temperament (introvert or extrovert). Healthy retreats (“turtling”) are vital, but must be balanced with intentional connection. Vulnerability—within safe community—unveils God's love and the power of prayer. Spiritual battles are not fought alone; we lock shields through fellowship and humility. God uses both quiet moments and community engagement to reveal His goodness and grace. Challenge: This week, ask God where you might need a healthy retreat—and where you might need to step back into community to “lock shields” with others. Practice vulnerable honesty, and remember that God is present both in your shell and on the battlefield. You are invited to join us on the Gospel Spice Prayer Bible Study, titled "The heart behind prayer" starting September 20, 2025! Details and registration here: https://www.gospelspice.com/prayer  There are a few things in our Christian life that we know we should do more, or at least better – and prayer just might top the list. Prayer is a mystery. Why would a conversation with a human have any influence on God's eternal, sovereign plan? It defies logic, and beckons love. How can God, the Almighty Lord of Hosts, be this close, this personal? It defies understanding, and beckons involvement. But, lack of time, inspiration, and discipline, combined with the ruthless tyranny of our busy lives, push prayer to the periphery, to the “one day I'll get to it” pile. And yet, we can excel at what we endeavor to undertake. So, why isn't prayer more of a spiritual priority? Could we develop a mindset around prayer that made it attractive, inspiring, even maybe delightful? What if we attuned our spiritual ears to listen to God, and our spiritual eyes to see His provision? As an unassuming student, I'm going to humbly offer to share the little I have learned from others about the joy of prayer. I will give us theology, practical tips, and useful resources, sharing what works for me as we, together, learn to pray. If you find prayer intimidating, or if your lack of prayer makes you feel guilty or “less than,” then this is the place for you! If you have been a student of prayer for many years, this is the place for you too! If you have breath in your lungs, then prayer can become one of the deepest joys of your day. Don't miss out! A PERSPECTIVE ABOUT PRAYER To pray is to believe that God not only hears, but that He responds. It is to stand in the gap for a broken world, wielding the authority of Christ, empowered by the Spirit, and trusting in the goodness of the Father. The question is not whether prayer works, but whether we are willing to pray the kinds of prayers that invite God's Kingdom into the darkest places of the earth—and of our own hearts. We may never fully understand the mechanics of prayer, or how it intersects with God's sovereignty, but we are not called to understand everything. We are called to be faithful. And faithfulness means showing up—in prayer, in persistence, in expectation. So today, let us pray not only for the comfort of our hearts, but for the transformation of the world. Let us take our place as image-bearers, co-laborers, and co-heirs. Let us believe that God is still listening—and still acting. Because He is. There's only one way to find out what might happen when we truly pray like this. Let's begin. THE MINDSET BEHIND THIS COURSE Before we begin, let me tell you the obvious: I don't really know how to pray. I'm a humble student and absolute beginner at the holy endeavor that is prayer. So, I'll share what I learned from them. Humility is going to be our primary heart posture! With each lesson, I will offer a few thoughts, practices, and ideas – with much humility, and not taking myself too seriously. I will also share her favorite books and resources about prayer. FInally, I will introduce you to some of the most influential prayer warriors of our history as the Body of Christ. Most importantly, I will invite YOU to pray! Learning to pray comes from praying. In this episode of The Electorette, host Jen Taylor-Skinner is joined by Kelly Hall, Executive Director of The Fairness Project, to discuss how ballot measures are transforming the political landscape. As congressional dysfunction deepens and the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill" threatens vital programs like Medicaid, direct democracy offers a bold and effective workaround. Kelly breaks down the Fairness Project's 2024 wins—where voters in red states overturned abortion bans, raised the minimum wage, and expanded healthcare access. These aren't just policy victories; they're blueprints for bypassing broken institutions and reclaiming power from unresponsive lawmakers. Ballot initiatives not only protect rights under attack—they can reshape public consensus and influence national debates. From lawsuits to signature drives, and from grassroots momentum to constitutional amendments, this conversation is both a reality check and a call to action. Whether you live in a red state, blue state, or somewhere in between, ballot initiatives may be the most underused—and urgently needed—tool we have to defend democracy. Episode Chapters (00:00) Empowering Voters Through Ballot Initiatives Ballot initiatives empower citizens to enact change on critical issues in conservative states, influencing the national narrative. (12:25) The Power of Direct Democracy Citizen-initiated ballot measures serve as a tool for marginalized groups in red states, while corporations use them in blue states. (24:14) Expanding Impact of Ballot Initiatives Citizen-initiated ballot measures challenge conservative agendas and shape national discourse on reproductive rights, healthcare, and minimum wage. (37:36) Mobilizing for Direct Democracy Ballot measures are a democratic tool for change, but face challenges such as signature collection and threats from lawmakers. What if the key to growing your business isn't working harder, but building smarter systems that do the heavy lifting for you? In this episode, Karl Staib reveals how proactive communication systems can save you hours each week while preventing costly problems before they spiral out of control. Whether you're a solo entrepreneur or leading a team, these practical strategies will help you stop chasing information and start creating magnetic systems that your team actually wants to use. Key Highlights from the Show 1. The Power of Proactive Communication Systems Karl emphasizes that the #1 strategy for business growth is creating proactive communication rather than reactive follow-ups. Instead of constantly chasing down information from employees or contractors, establish systems where updates come to you automatically. This simple shift saves time, reduces stress, and creates consistency across your operations. 2. The Friday Morning Update System Implement a simple but powerful system: have team members send you updates every Friday morning by 10 AM covering what's working well, what's not working, and what they're doing to improve situations. The key is responding back consistently to close the feedback loop and show you value their input. 3. Connected Systems Drive Business Success All business systems should connect and communicate with each other. When sales, operations, and customer service work in silos, problems compound. Bill shares examples from nursing homes where connecting clinical, admissions, and financial systems dramatically improved overall performance by helping each department understand their impact on the whole. 4. Building "Magnetic" Systems People Want to Use The most effective systems are ones that employees are naturally drawn to use because they see clear value. Focus on creating systems that make people's jobs easier and help them succeed, rather than systems that feel like additional burdens. When people understand how their work connects to company success, they become more engaged. 5. The Appreciation Gap Solution Address the massive appreciation gap in business: Only 15% of employees feel appreciated, while 85% of leaders think they give enough appreciation. That's a huge gap! You can learn about my system to solve this issue and how you can apply it to your leadership style. You can get the Quick-start Ai Operations Guided and customized Chat GPT to help you integrate AI into your operations (as well as other systems guides). Back in the day, the guru was very necessary because without one, we could not access the Tantras at all (that is, the ritual manuals in which we encounter the practices and philosophies of the tradition) because they were all physical manuscripts that were actually kept in the Guru's abode or even as part of the Guru's memory. As such, without dīkshā (spiritual initiation), it would be nearly impossible to get access to the tradition! Now, many of these texts are available online, in many different translations. One can encounter them and study them and practice out of them without ever having contacted a living teacher. And as such, a very important question comes up: is a living guru even needed anymore? Couldn't one just study from books and from videos on the internet? Perhaps! However, the role of the guru is far more than just one who gives us access to concepts, theories & techniques. The guru is far more than a role model who demonstrates with their lives the proof of the practice and the path. The guru is far more than a personal mentor in whom we can confide and find solace, which are very important things for a real life human who is attempting to practice spirituality intensely! Although these things are all very important and are included in the role of the guru, the main function of the guru is the transmission of spiritual power, what Swami Vivekananda called the "quickening impulse" in his talk called "The Need of a Guru" (Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, Volume III). But what exactly is this "quickening impulse"? Because this is the most mysterious dimension of Guru-Yoga, we explore it in this lecture by referring to some events in the life of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. This is one of the lectures in our series on Swami Vivekananda's "My Master" along with Advice to Spiritual Teachers & Aspirants Sex, Drugs & Choosing A Guru | Q&A Our Mission | A Manifesto & Guru as Transmission of Power! Support the showLectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrM

Listeners hear about Ballers' fresh menu, family-friendly atmosphere, and commitment to great service. Building Community, Resilience, and Excellence: The Story and Lessons Behind Ballers Sports Bar in Grayslake There's something special about a hometown sports bar—a place where the food is fresh, the games are always on, and everyone is treated like family. In the latest episode of Discovering Grayslake, host David Wall sits down with Amar and Brittany, the passionate co-owners of Ballers, Grayslake's newest sports bar and restaurant. Their journey is more than just a business story; it's a masterclass in resilience, community-building, and the pursuit of excellence. Whether you're a local entrepreneur, a restaurant enthusiast, or someone who loves a good underdog story, this in-depth look at Ballers offers valuable lessons and actionable insights. Let's break down the key themes and tips from the episode, so you can apply their wisdom to your own ventures—or simply appreciate the heart behind your next burger and beer. 1. Define Your Core Values and Let Them Guide Every Decision The Ballers Acronym: More Than a Name Amar and Brittany didn't just pick a catchy name—they built Ballers around a set of core values, using the word as an acronym: B**elieve: Always believe in yourself and your dreams. A**chieve: Work hard and never give up. L**earn: Knowledge is power; keep learning. L**ove: Love yourself and stay positive. E**njoy: Enjoy life and what you do. R**espect: Treat everyone equally and earn respect by giving it. Actionable Advice: Articulate your values.** Whether you're opening a business or leading a team, define what you stand for. Post these values where your staff and customers can see them. Live your values.** Amar and Brittany treat every guest—neighbor or star athlete—with the same respect and care. This consistency builds trust and loyalty. Let values drive culture.** A values-driven environment attracts like-minded staff and customers, creating a positive feedback loop. 2. Embrace the Power of Community and Personal Connection Creating a “Home Away from Home” Ballers isn't just about sports and food; it's about fostering a sense of belonging. David Wall notes that the best bars and restaurants feel like home, where staff and regulars know each other by name. How Ballers Does It: Warm, friendly service:** From the moment you walk in, you're greeted like family. Personal touches:** Amar and Brittany's playful banter behind the bar adds to the welcoming vibe. Community engagement:** Specials for local car wash customers, discounts for podcast listeners, and a focus on supporting local events. Actionable Advice: Get to know your customers.** Learn their names, their favorite teams, and their stories. Reward loyalty.** Offer discounts, host special events, and recognize your regulars. Be present.** Owners who are visible and engaged set the tone for the entire establishment. 3. Resilience in the Face of Adversity Overcoming Setbacks—Together Opening Ballers wasn't easy. Amar and Brittany faced skepticism, a challenging location, and even a life-altering accident that left Brittany with multiple injuries. Yet, their determination never wavered. Key Takeaways: Lean on your support system.** Amar and Brittany's friendship and partnership helped them push through tough times. Stay positive.** They used naysayers' doubts as motivation. Adapt and persevere.** Even during Brittany's recovery, she stayed involved, inspiring everyone around her. With a career that began in retail management and a decade spent as a touring musician, Michael brings a diverse background to his leadership role at one of the most celebrated aquariums in the country. His journey at the Tennessee Aquarium began as an admissions assistant manager and progressed to the executive team, overseeing guest experience across a sprawling, multi-building campus in Chattanooga. In this interview, Michael talks about starting with respect, connecting employees to the mission, and lessons from being a touring musician. Starting with Respect “You're never going to get in trouble for trying to do your job. If you are doing what in your mind is best for the guest… we can go back later, we can talk through that, we can make adjustments.” Respect is a foundational value for Michael, both in his personal leadership style and within the Tennessee Aquarium's culture. He shared how early experiences in management—starting at just 18—taught him the challenges of leading peers and the importance of transitioning from being a peer to being a leader. Over time, he distinguished between managing tasks and truly leading people. As a leader now, he empowers his team by ensuring they don't fear making decisions in the moment for the benefit of the guest. Mistakes are viewed as opportunities for learning, not punishment. Michael's approach promotes psychological safety and trust. By removing fear from the equation, he allows team members to take initiative, try new approaches, and build confidence. This empowerment leads to stronger team performance and, ultimately, better guest experiences. Connecting Employees to the Mission “If we expect our employees to connect people to water and wildlife, first we need to connect our employees to water and wildlife.” At the Tennessee Aquarium, conservation and education are central to the mission. Michael emphasized the importance of immersing employees in the organization's purpose—not just through training but by giving them firsthand experiences. Team members visit the Conservation Institute, participate in programs like sturgeon releases, and develop a personal connection to the stories they're telling guests. This connection transforms the guest interaction. Rather than reciting facts from a script, employees share genuine excitement and passion. Michael explained that this authenticity helps the Aquarium consistently rank in the top 1% for hospitality among global cultural organizations. By investing in the employee experience, they amplify the guest experience in return. Lessons from Being a Touring Musician “There's always something positive that you can go through and focus on and kind of talk through… and really being there and showing that type of respect—people, you start to get that back.” Before his time at the aquarium, Michael spent years on the road as a guitarist in a band. He credits that experience with shaping his values around community, branding, and respect. Touring taught him to build relationships with promoters, support other bands, and find creative ways to engage with audiences—like offering CDs to fans who beat the band in a game of Mortal Kombat. These grassroots, DIY (or as Michael prefers, DIT—do it together) experiences taught him how to build loyalty, communicate a brand, and foster belonging. These same principles now guide his work in the attraction space. Just like a band earns its fan base one person at a time, Michael believes in creating meaningful guest experiences by investing in the little things—hospitality, enthusiasm, and consistency.   To learn more about the Tennessee Aquarium, visit TNAqua.org or follow them on social media.
