Grupo Televisa, Mexico’s largest television network, announced Tuesday it is joining with U.S. Spanish-language broadcaster Univision to form a third company that will produce content for both that will be the “definitive global leader in Spanish-language media.” The new company will be known as TelevisaUnivision. Both firms have been struggling to capture a share of the booming over-the-top video services sector. Televisa said the new company will be in charge of producing shows, distributing and marketing for both Televisa and Univision and also will create a new streaming channel. Intro: Minutes 0 to 3:30 I had some technical problems so this part starts with us discussing Chandra dyeing and cutting her own hair. It turned out ok and she got rid of her “triangle head” where it’s flat on top and poofs out at the end. My friend whom I mentioned last week fixed her bright pink hair and it looks great. Royals: Minutes 3:30 to 11:45 The Copy Keens hired the former social media expert for the Cambridges. People Magazine reported this at first and then replaced their story with another article about how the Cambridges are using social media. Lainey noticed this. Chandra thinks People was trying to suck up to the Cambridges and make sure they have continued access. The Cambridges recorded a sweet video with primary school students and their teachers. This comes after weeks of them pushing stories that William is ready to step into a statesman role. The video was really cute and there was a nice moment when Prince William asked a little girl if her Easter box was a handbag. A lot of people were talking about how Kate’s accent wasn’t as posh in that video. I talked to a woman from Birmingham, England named Sara. She said that Kate’s accent was like no one’s she had ever heard and that Kate sounds posher than The Queen. Chandra notes that Kate’s accent comes and goes except when she’s giving a speech. Meghan and Harry announced that their foundation is called Archewell. They did this in response to The Telegraph leaking the news, but the Sussexes still got dragged for their timing. Politics: Minutes 11:45 to 20:45 Trigger warning minutes 16 to 20:45. Bernie Sanders dropped out of the race even though it’s been clear for a month that he did not have a path to the nomination. Chandra expected him to stay in the race for months longer. We’re interested in the high profile endorsements of Biden to come, especially the Obamas, and are excited to hear his pick for Vice President. We talk about the toxic Bernie Bro culture. We don’t blame Bernie for all of his followers, but he could have shut them down. His followers attacked Jim Clyburn for endorsing Biden and have been racist about Biden voters. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Bernie dropped out the day after civil rights icon John Lewis endorsed Biden. We talk about the allegations against Joe Biden. They say that historical mysteries and biblical figures can all be explained by alien involvement. She got me to watch two episodes from this 15th season: They Came from The Pleiades and The Relics of Roswell. They Came from The Pleiades blew our minds. It starts with the discovery of an interstellar object found in our solar system in 2017 that experts think was manmade and came from the Pleiades galaxy. This is the Seven Sisters constellation to the right of Orion. Many cultures throughout the world have traditions and lore that they evolved from visitors from the Pleiades. This includes the aboriginal people of Australia, the Hawaiian people and people from India and Nepal. They tried to tie in the recent discovery of a humanoid species that outlasted the Neanderthals, the Denisovans. Because the people who share the same Pleadies origin story have some DNA in common with the Denisovans, that means the Denisovans were aliens, right? We like this show because it pulls us in and we believe it until we stop to think about it. Chandra loves the epsides that claim that Bible stories and figures are aliens. She’s especially convinced by the stories of alien abductions, which are very similar. I mention the book Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan, which points out that in the middle ages people described being visited by angels and saints in scenarios similar to alien abductions. Experiments show that stimulation to the temporal lobe of the brain can cause people to think they’re being visited by supernatural creatures. I’m not convinced but there’s always the possibility that aliens are real. Chandra believes something weird crashed in Roswell. She also thinks that the American military had access to alien technology, but she thinks Ancient Aliens is bullsh-t overall. I heard a crazy show on NPR from an author who claimed that the Area 51 incident was a Russian flight mission, orchestrated by former Nazi scientists doing terrible human experiments. 388 - Marshall Chapman Marshall Chapman is one of the absolute greatest American songwriters and a one of a kind vocalist. I had pursued an interview with her for years, and finally an interview took place in Decatur, Georgia at Eddie's Attic. Her album Big Lonesome was one of the greatest albums released in 2011 and was a memorial to the great songwriter Tim Krekel. She had also released a book entitled "They Came to Nashville." Chapman has released acclaimed studio and live albums and has written songs recorded by everyone from Irma Thomas, Jimmy Buffett, John Hiatt, Tanya Tucker, Ronnie Milsap and others.

This talk was given as part of the Oxford Transitional Justice Research (OTJR) Seminar Series. Over the last five years, a variety of entities - governmental, non-governmental and those created by bodies within the United Nations - have determined that ISIS has committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide in areas it controlled in Iraq and Syria. The UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum have independently determined that ISIS has committed genocide against the Yazidi religious community of northern Iraq, and underscored that the logic, nature, and commission of genocide has been highly gendered. Since the collapse of ISIS's "caliphate", the pursuit of criminal accountability has accelerated, though it remains hindered by a range of factors, including a struggling Iraqi justice system, and an unwillingness of many states to take back their nationals, many held in SDF detention centres and camps in northern Syria, for trial. Alongside this, there is also increased discussion of the desirability of a broader range of transitional justice measures. Sareta Ashraph hopes to address these issues. She has been working on documenting and analysing ISIS crimes in Syria and Iraq with the UN Commission of Inquiry, the Syria IIIM, and most recently UNITAD. Sareta Ashraph is a barrister specialized in international criminal and humanitarian law. Until August 2019, she was based in Iraq as the Senior Analyst on the UN Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh. In 2017, Sareta was part of the start-up team of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (Syria IIIM). From May 2012 to November 2016, she served as the Chief Legal Analyst on the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria where she was the primary drafter of the June 2016 report "They Came to Destroy", which determined that ISIS was committing genocide, as well as crimes against humanity and war crimes, against the Yazidis. In 2011 to 2012, she was the Analyst on the Commission of Inquiry on Libya. In 2010 and 2011, Sareta was the Legal Adviser to the ICC’s Defence Office. From 2004 to 2009, Sareta was Defence Co-Counsel before the SCSL. Sareta is an associate member of Garden Court Chambers (London), and is called to the Bar of England and Wales, as well as the Bar of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Welcome to Auteur Theory for our inaugural first episode of our first season, where hosts Nick and Chris will explore the films of Canada's own Master of sublime cinematic depravity, David Cronenberg. We're starting things off with Cronenberg's first theatrical release as a director, Shivers from 1975. Also known as They Came from Within to U.S. audiences, and from an original screenplay titled Orgy of the Blood Parasites both perfectly apt descriptions of this B horror schlockfest that finds a parasitic creature created by mad science turn the denizens of a state of the art luxury apartment complex into bloodthirsty, sex crazed maniacs. Both a treat for fans of 70s B horror cheese and sleaze, and an important landmark of Canadian cinema. Cronenberg arrives fully forged with the grotesque obsessions that will define his cinematic career for decades to come. Join Nick and Chris as we start at the very beginning.

Tranquility Bass was the stage name of Michael Adam Kandel,(1967/1968 – May 17, 2015) an American musician whose music has been variously categorized as ambient house, trip hop, and funk rock. He released various singles during the 1990s, followed by his first full-length album, Let The Freak Flag Fly, in 1997 on Astralwerks. Kandel was born and raised in Chicago. He learned to play guitar and keyboards at age 12. By the age of 15 he had begun to record experimental electronic music in his bedroom. Kandel attended the Chicago Academy for the Arts, after which he moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s to attend CalArts. It was there that he met Tom Chasteen, with whom he started the Exist Dance label in 1991 The two released several singles, including some as Tranquility Bass, later that year. In 1993, Kandel released the single "They Came in Peace", which has been described as an ambient-house classic and appeared on the Mo' Wax compilation album Headz the following year.[4] After the duo released this and a few other singles, including two songs that appeared on the FFRR compilation album, California Dreaming in 1994, Chasteen left Tranquility Bass and relocated to Tucson.[6] Tranquility Bass's touring bassist, Matt Lux, is also the bassist for Chicago-based band Isotope 217. In 1994, after Chasteen's departure, Kandel joined Tyler Vlaovich to record an album on Lopez Island in Washington.[8] More than two years later, the album was released as Let the Freak Flag Fly on Astralwerks Records. Kandel sometimes ceased talking to people, or from using his voice, for two or three days on end during the recording process.[8] According to Billboard, the album led to Kandel developing "a cult following that spans several genres beyond the dance realm." The Los Angeles Times gave the album a rating of three stars (out of four) and described it as "the electronic progeny of acid rock." IIt was also reviewed favorably by Greg Kot, who described it as "a grand journey through nearly a century of recorded music, a densely layered montage of electronic manipulations and live instruments made under conditions that were certainly unusual."[11] The album contained the song "We All Want To Be Free", made more popular by its airplay on MTV's Amp. Heartbreaks & Hallelujahs[edit] After a long hiatus from studio recording and rumors of drug abuse, Kandel returned in 2012 with a sophomore effort entitled Heartbreaks & Hallelujahs. The album was completed on March 21, 2002. Kandel reportedly tried to have the album released on multiple labels, only to have each of them fold after he sent it to them. The album ended up being released on Exist Dance, although it is readily available in digital format on Amazon MP3 and iTunes. The album is mostly new material with the exception of yet another remix of an early days single, "Mike's House". Kandel seemed to try to get away from the idea of being an electronic musician (although some of the album still has electronics), with a dose of various types of rock such as funk rock and surf rock.

Marshall Chapman, the one-time South Carolina debutant who became a successful and prolific singer-songwriter in Nashville, talks about her tumultuous life in the 1960’s and ‘70’s detailed in her first book, Goodbye Little Rock and Roller. She partied and became friends with country musicians including Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson who are featured in her second book, They Came to Nashville.

Steve Cooper talks with actor Dean Cameron. Dean is best known for his role as Francis "Chainsaw" Gremp in the movie Summer School and co-starred in Ski School and Ski School II. On television he starred in the series Spencer, Fast Times, They Came from Outer Space and Mister Sterling and has appeared on The Facts of Life, ALF, Felicity, ER, Newsroom and Psych to name a few. He recently toured with a two-person show that he wrote called The Nigerian Spam Scam Scam which was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Comedy Festival, the Just for Laughs Festival and the Upright Citizens Brigade. He also wrote and directed the short film Glutton Falls and directed the video Fat Girl for the heavy metal band Steel Panther. 

Join us this week as we welcome critically acclaimed singer songwriter, Marshall Chapman. Hailing from Spartanburg, SC., Marshall to date has released twelve critically acclaimed albums, and her songs have been recorded by everyone from Emmylou Harris and Joe Cocker to Irma Thomas and Jimmy Buffett. 2010 was a banner year for Chapman. In January, she landed her first movie role, playing Gwyneth Paltrow’s road manager in "Country Strong". In February, her musical Good Ol’ Girls (adapted from the fiction of Lee Smith and Jill McCorkle, featuring songs by Matraca Berg and Marshall) opened off-Broadway. Later that fall, Chapman simultaneously released a new book (They Came to Nashville) and a new CD, Big Lonesome. We will talk to Marshall about her upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at her music, feature her latest songs, and ask her to share her message for the troops.
