The NAACP Salt Lake Branch was established in 1918, and has been dedicated to lifting up the community, championing fairness, supporting local youth and strengthening opportunity for all. President, Jeanetta Williams, joins us with more. Jeanetta Williams: At the NAACP Salt Lake Branch, we carry forward the mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, founded on February 12, 1909, in New York City by 60 activists, social reformers and journalists dedicated to advancing civil rights. Our branch has a mission to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights for all, and to eradicate racial hatred and discrimination. Our vision is a society where all individuals enjoy equal rights and to eliminate racial discrimination. In Utah, we have a long history of combating discrimination and promoting equality through initiatives such as the Albert Fritz Civil Rights Award, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award, the Rosa Parks Award, First Responder Awards and scholarships. Through this work, we continue to strengthen communities and create opportunities for all. Derek Miller: The NAACP Salt Lake Branch continues making Utah stronger and more inclusive.

I'm just so glad that there are wonderful people in this world.People who are genuine. Sincere.People who care about the person—about the soul inside—rather than accomplishments. That's the thing that matters most in my life. And it's so atypical in the world I live in, where everything is about productivity, outcomes, and “what did you get done today?”When I think about the people who changed humanity—Jane Goodall, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Joan of Arc, St. Francis of Assisi—I keep coming back to one truth:Every single one of them looked like a screw-up in their own time.A person “wasting resources.”A failure.Someone ruining the world.Someone doing the wrong thing. We only admire them now because somebody wrote their stories down. Because we had the written word. Because their humanity was captured long enough for others to see it.Today, almost all of us have that same ability to store what we believe. To write. To care. To do something that looks pointless or foolish in the moment, but is actually for the betterment of humanity. If there's anything I want to be known for, it's not my accomplishments. It's that I cared about the actual human being in front of me.And I want you to think about this too:What “screw-up” would you do—what wasteful, time-consuming, energy-draining thing—if it meant being known for your humanity?Because almost every truly human act will look like failure to someone.

What happens when the power of the Holy Spirit collides with the chaos of American politics? Join Joshua Lewis as he sits down with historian Molly Worthen to explore her book Spellbound, which traces the fascinating and often controversial story of charisma—both spiritual and political—from Puritan prophets to modern-day leaders like Donald Trump. We explore the tension between institutional authority and personal revelation that has defined American Christianity and culture for centuries. Discover how figures like Anne Hutchinson challenged Puritan ministers by claiming direct assurance from the Holy Spirit, how George Whitefield revolutionized preaching with theatrical emotion, and how Joseph Smith blended enlightenment rationalism with spiritual experience to birth Mormonism.Professor Worthen, a historian at UNC Chapel Hill, reveals how charismatic leaders aren't always the charming orators we imagine—instead, they're polarizing storytellers who invite followers into transcendent narratives that give suffering and struggle cosmic significance. We explore the dangerous line between prophetic truth and spiritual manipulation, examining everyone from radical Quaker Benjamin Lay to Martin Luther King Jr., and asking the crucial question: how do we test the spirits in an age of radical individualism?Whether you're fascinated by church history, concerned about discernment in charismatic movements, or trying to understand the spiritual undercurrents shaping our political moment, this episode offers essential insights into how divine power—or the claim to it—has shaped the American experiment.0:00 – Introduction0:46 – Molly's background and ministry4:49 – Defining charisma20:11 – Anne Hutchinson & Puritan Massachusetts30:00 – Donna Beatrice & the Congo rebellion36:25 – George Fox & the Quaker movement44:01 – George Whitefield & emotional preaching50:28 – Charisma & American individualism54:05 – Joseph Smith & the Mormon church1:00:14 – Closing thoughts on charisma & discernmentABOUT THE GUEST:

Tom's personal story is a little more vulnerable and fragile. He tells of experiencing a suicidal depression in a time when such things were never discussed, being of the opinion that depression was a sign of weakness, and getting it treated anyway at the behest of his wife. Hanoi Jane Emerges, Trump's 100 Days of Buffoonery and Outrage, and the New Anti-MAGA American PopeWelcome to episode forty-three of David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. In this episode, David and Stu cover the following:1) The Audubon Society, an organization Stu supports, awarded Jane Fonda for her environmental work, which caused Stu to boycott the event and consider a protest against her due to her traitorous behavior during the Vietnam War.2) Trump's insulting and outrageous proposal to rename Veterans Day, which was greeted with consternation by those who served their country in the military, unlike Trump, who evaded service by claiming he had bone spurs like the cowardly nepo baby he is.3) The election of Mike Carney as Prime Minister in Canada. Carney is a far-left candidate, and the conservative was expected to win. Instead, due to a Trump backlash over his calls for annexation, the Canadians revolted, indicating how weak Trump's influence is globally. Similar electoral results occurred in Australia, indicating how poorly the MAGA brand sells internationally, unlike Reagan, who brought his revolution to the world and won the Cold War.4) The ridiculous proposal by Trump to repurpose Alcatraz as a federal prison when it is basically in ruins and would require rebuilding and probably would be impractical to operate. This is another stunt that further indicates how weak his presidential leadership has been.5) Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, an American, was chosen as the new Pope Leo XIV, and he is not conservative either. In fact, he had previously condemned Trump's and JD Piglet's immigration policies. Meanwhile, Trump disrespected Catholic tradition at Francis' funeral and then posted an AI image of himself as Pope. Imagine what the liberal elite media would have done if he had posted himself as MLK or Mohammad. We welcome comments on our podcasts, which can be left on our website or any other platform you may be tuning in on.Connect with David & Stu:Email David & Stu: davidandstuunhinged@gmail.com and share your comments, concerns, and questions. We encourage all to visit our website (https://www.rageworksnetwork.com/show/david-stu-unhinged/) and please leave comments for our consideration.

I was surprised, though, how many songs from the movie I knew every word to.But, I have to admit, the most surprising thing to me was that Freddie Mercury was a Persian Indian man who lived in England. When I listened to the songs, there was no Persian accent. No Indian accent. And there was no British accent. It reminded me of a conversation I had with one of my instructors who specialized in accent reduction. She told me that, “Music is the secret weapon for accent reduction. When people sing, everyone sounds like they speak American English with no accent.”English is a musical language. If it were a band, it wouldn't be a quiet little string quartet. It would be a jazz ensemble — bold, abrasive, and filled to the brim with rhythm and melody changes. And to speak American English fluently, you have to master those rhythmic and melodic changes. There are three main components that influence your accent:-- Vowel Sounds (consonant and vowel pronunciation)-- Rhythm (stress patterns between words and syllables)--Intonation (the rise and fall of pitch in a sentence)Music mimics all three of these elements, and trains your ears and mouth at the same time. So, on this episode, I'm going to break each of these three items down and look at how real language learners have used music and speech techniques to achieve clearer communication.By the way, although this episode is focusing on the non-native English speaker, the tips can help anyone who wants to become a better presenter. If you think of great speakers like MLK, one of the reasons why he was so popular was that he spoke with a rhythm. You can do something similar to captivate your audiences as well.Show Notes: Music 101: A Musical Guide to Accent Reduction(https://www.fearlesspresentations.com/music-101-the-key-to-accent-reduction/)

Daily Dose of Hope December 22, 2025   Scripture - Acts 21:27-40   Prayer:  Dear God, We come to you today with sorrow.  We know that we are sinful and broken.  We know that we have fallen short.  We have been disobedient as individuals and as a church.  Lord, please forgive us and show us your better way.  How we need you.  We are lost without you and our behavior so often speaks to that.  Help us seek holiness.  Help us love others the way you love them.  In these next few moments of silence, Lord, please help us set aside our scattered thoughts and focus on you...  In Your Name, Amen.   Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Church daily Bible reading.  We have been on a journey, reading through the Gospels and the book of Acts.  Today, we finish with Acts 21.   It doesn't take long before people see Paul and get worked up.  Some Asian Jews, who saw Paul at the Temple, accuse him of bringing a Greek in the Temple (not true) and teaching people to not follow the law (again not true).  Who were these Asian Jews?  They were most likely from the province of Asia Minor (modern day Turkey) and quite possibly from Ephesus.  They could very well have remembered Paul from his extended stay in Ephesus and the various conflicts that arose.   It doesn't take long for a few rabble rousers to work up a riot.  Paul finds himself in the middle of it, being beaten by a mob.  When the Roman soldiers hear about the riot, they rush to figure out what's going on.  What's interesting is that they also make assumptions about Paul and have been bound, to be thrown in the barracks.  It seems no one really cares much for finding the truth.    The main charge brought against Paul was that he brought a Gentile into the Temple. This would be a serious offense. The Jews did not allow women or Gentiles into the central courts of the Temple, believing them to be unclean. Although the Law did not specifically forbid Gentiles from going into the Temple courts, by the first century, Herod the Great had expanded the Temple courts so that there was a large area where everyone was welcome, the Court of the Gentiles.    Despite the fact that the charge is false, no one comes to Paul's defense.  None of the Jewish believers, who must have seen the whole thing, say a word.  While this was out of fear, for sure, it is still surprising.  Silence, as we know, always empowers wrongdoers.   Let's talk about silence for a moment.  There is good silence, like being silent before the Lord, and then there is bad silence, like not standing up for what is right.  Bullies exist because the majority stays silent.  Martin Luther King, Jr., famously said, "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends," emphasizing that friends' lack of support is deeply painful and is what enables injustice.  Unfortunately, we have seen this over centuries in the church.  We saw it with Jesus and the disciples.  We see it in the early church.  We saw it during the persecutions of the first several centuries and through many wars.  How many Christians stood in fear and watched the Nazis murder millions of helpless Jews?  How many Christians have been silent in the face of slavery, racism, and gross injustice across our own nation?   What are the main forces of injustice in our world right now?  Where has the church stood up and done the right thing and where have we been silent?  What about you?   More tomorrow.   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Josephine Baker was a dazzling dancer, a fearless spy, and one of the world's first Black superstars. In this episode of Dead Funny History, historian Greg Jenner tells her extraordinary story with wit, warmth and plenty of jazz hands.Born in 1906 in St Louis, Missouri, Josephine's early life was tough. She worked as a maid from the age of eight and fled racial violence with dreams of stardom. By 15, she'd already been married twice and was making waves on Broadway with her unique comic dance style. But it was in Paris where she truly became a sensation by combining tap, ballet, and even kangaroo-inspired moves into her cabaret performances.Greg explores how Josephine used her fame to challenge racist stereotypes, famously performing in a skirt made of bananas to mock colonial attitudes. She became the highest-paid performer in Europe, starred in films, and even had her own line of dolls – all while living with a menagerie of exotic pets, including a cheetah named Chiquita. But Josephine wasn't just a showbiz icon. During World War Two, she became a spy for the French Resistance, smuggling secrets in sheet music and using invisible ink. After the war, she was decorated for bravery and continued to fight for civil rights, speaking at the 1963 March on Washington alongside Martin Luther King Jr.Greg also reveals Josephine's later life, including her adoption of twelve children from different backgrounds to promote unity, and her final triumphant performance before her death in 1975. With jokes, sound effects, and a quiz to test your memory, this episode is a joyful celebration of a truly remarkable woman.Perfect for families and fans of You're Dead To Me, this snappy history lesson brings Josephine Baker's legacy to life.Writers: Jack Bernhardt, Gabby Hutchinson Crouch and Dr Emma Nagouse Host: Greg Jenner Performers: Mali Ann Rees and John-Luke Roberts Producer: Dr Emma Nagouse Associate Producer: Gabby Hutchinson Crouch Audio Producer: Emma Weatherill Script Consultant: Dr Michell Chresfield Production Coordinator: Liz Tuohy Production Manager: Jo Kyle Studio Managers: Keith Graham and Andrew Garratt Sound Designer: Peregrine AndrewsA BBC Studios Production

You've done the work. You've built the career, gone to therapy, read the books. So why does love still feel like the one area where your brilliance doesn't translate?Annie Lalla is a relationship cartographer with an Honors Science Degree in Biology and Philosophy, a minor in Buddhism, and professional certifications in Coaching, NLP, and Clinical Hypnotherapy. Her work weaves evolutionary psychology, integral theory, intergenerational family systems, and therapeutic sexuality into a framework that actually works. She helps singles done with dating find their person—and couples in love resolve the conflicts that keep them stuck. Her mission: help you build a relationship that's a trampoline for your dreams and a sanctuary for your heart. In this episode, you'll discover:→ Why women are actually the visionary leaders of relationships—and what happens when they wait to be rescued instead→ The reason your partner triggers you so intensely (hint: you've time-traveled back to childhood)→ How to know if overwhelming emotions are actually yours—or inherited pain you've been carrying for someone else→ The simple practice that releases feelings that aren't yours back to their rightful owner→ Why conflict is actually a collaboration trying to happen—and how to use it to strengthen your bond→ The "WTF to MLK" method that transforms criticism into an invitation your partner can't refuse→ What your partner is really doing when they challenge you (think Michelangelo carving David)→ The one question that reveals whether a relationship is worth the growth it demandsHere's the truth: The love you're looking for exists. But it won't come from rescue. It won't come from finding someone who finally "gets it" so you don't have to feel your feelings anymore. True love is the emotional CrossFit of human existence—and it's rare because most people are chasing happily ever after instead of alive ever after. The fantasy says love should be easy. The truth says love is the highest game you can play as a human being. You have everything you need to lead. Bobby is joined by TV legend Maury Povich, who looks back on the moments that turned “You are NOT the father!” into one of the most quoted lines in TV history and how that era compares to his early days as a serious journalist. He shares stories from covering Watergate and the Martin Luther King Jr. riots, what it was like being on the front lines of huge historic moments, and how those experiences shaped the way he sees people. Maury also talks about why, after all these years, he still genuinely loves interviewing and what keeps him curious about human behavior. Then WWE Superstar Chelsea Green hops in to pull back the curtain on life in the ring and on the road. She explains what it’s actually like to travel with championship belts through airports, why she refuses to check them, and the physical and mental grind that comes with a job that has no real off-season. Chelsea and Bobby get into the biggest misconceptions about wrestling being “fake,” the skill and risk that go into every match, and why the stories behind the characters are just as real as anything you’ll see on TV.Check out On Par With Maury Povich Podcast Season 2 which premieres on Dec 8th on YouTube!Tickets for WrestleMania 42 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, are on sale now at Ticketmaster HERE Follow on Instagram: @TheBobbyCast Follow on TikTok: @TheBobbyCast Watch this Episode on Youtube See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

More To The Story: Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell is one of the most prominent Black conservatives in President Donald Trump's orbit. It all started last summer when the president visited Sewell's 180 Church while campaigning in Detroit. A month later, Sewell spoke at the Republican National Convention. And in January, he prayed for the new president during his inauguration inside the US Capitol. As Sewell's voice echoed around the domed rotunda, the prayer sounded familiar to many. That's because Sewell adapted Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. As Trump dismantles DEI policies around the country and pushes efforts to erase Black history from schools and museums, Sewell remains one of the president's most prominent Black defenders and argues that the Trump presidency is actually improving Black Americans' lives. On this week's More To The Story, Sewell sits down with host Al Letson to talk about his upbringing as a drug dealer in Detroit, his conversion to Christianity, and his inauguration prayer. Letson challenges Sewell's ideas about racism, his support of Charlie Kirk, and his defense of the Trump administration's rollback of DEI policies.Producer: Josh Sanburn | Editor: Kara McGuirk-Allison | Theme music: Fernando Arruda and Jim Briggs | Copy editor: Nikki Frick | Digital producer: Artis Curiskis | Deputy executive producer: Taki Telonidis | Executive producer: Brett Myers | Executive editor: James West | Host: Al Letson Donate today at Revealnews.org/more Subscribe to our weekly newsletter at Revealnews.org/weekly Follow us on Instagram and Bluesky Watch: I Spent a Week With Black Republicans (Mother Jones)Listen: Red, Black, and Blue (Reveal)Read: Trump Shuts Down Diversity Programs Across Government (Mother Jones)Listen: The Bible Says So…or Does It?
