Episode 95 In 1980, a seemingly unremarkable fire threatened to expose something far more dangerous than arson. What investigators uncovered was a trail that pointed toward an arms pipeline linked directly to the Irish Republican Army, operating quietly while The Troubles raged overseas. At the center of it all was Charles Galant—a small-time thief who never set out to be part of something so vast, but who became the sole link between a suspicious fire and an armory heist that tied someone in his network to the IRA. In this episode of Crime to Burn, we explore: The fire that first drew police attention How investigators connected a local blaze to an international arms network The role of theft, secrecy, and compartmentalization in terrorist operations How Galant's actions exposed vulnerabilities inside a tightly controlled system And how one overlooked incident nearly unraveled an entire pipeline This is a story about unintended consequences, criminal blind spots, and how fire once again became the catalyst that revealed what was never meant to be seen. Because even the most disciplined organizations fail at their weakest link. Buy Burn Boston Burn by Wayne M. Miller: https://a.co/d/ipCuGL2 Buy Bang Boom Burn by Wayne M. I don't know anyone who doesn't aspire to become a better listener. For over a decade I experimented, endeavored, and endured great efforts to actively hear people correctly. It was much harder than I ever anticipated. Then I wrote it down. Then I published it in a book. Now I read it out loud so we can all perhaps benefit. Please leave me a note on one of my social media channels at RogerRayBird and let me know what you have found to be valuable for you as a world-class listener. Look for my books on Amazon. 1. My memoir LIES BETWEEN US 2. The addict book "DADDY, WHY WERE YOU A DRUG ADDICT?" In this episode of Disaster Strikes on the Crux Podcast, hosts Julie Henningsen and Kaycee McIntosh explore the tragic story of Audrey Mestre, a world record freediver whose attempt ended in her untimely death on October 12, 2002. Audrey, a talented marine biologist and wife of famed freediver Francisco 'Pipin' Ferreras, attempted a No Limits dive to 171 meters off the coast of the Dominican Republic but never resurfaced alive. The episode delves into the mysteries surrounding her death, the possible negligence involved, and the ongoing controversy that has gripped the freediving community for over two decades. Featuring insights into the unique physiological demands of freediving, the mechanics of No Limits dives, and the subsequent safety improvements inspired by this tragedy, the discussion also touches on the fictionalized representation of her death in the 2022 Netflix film 'No Limit' and Pipin's subsequent defamation lawsuit. Addressing the relationship between law and the visual, this book examines the importance of photography in Central, East, and Southeast European show trials. The dispensation of justice during communist rule in Albania, East Germany, and Poland was reliant on legal propaganda, making the visual a fundamental part of the legitimacy of the law. Analysing photographs of trials, Agata Fijalkowski's Law, Visual Culture, and the Show Trial (Routledge, 2023) examines how this message was conveyed to audiences watching and participating in the spectacle of show trials. The book traces how this use of the visual was exported from the Soviet Union and imposed upon its satellite states in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. It shows how the legal actors and political authorities embraced new photographic technologies to advance their legal propaganda and legal photography. Drawing on contemporary theoretical work in the area, the book then challenges straightforward accounts of the relationship between law and the visual, critically engaging entrenched legal historical narratives, in relation to three different protagonists, to offer the possibility of reclaiming and rewriting past accounts. As its analysis demonstrates, the power of images can also be subversive; and, as such, the cases it addresses contribute to the discourse on visual epistemology and open onto contemporary questions about law and its inherent performativity. In an era marked by overwhelming busyness, rising loneliness, and a profound sense of disconnection exacerbated by social media, many Americans are craving deeper, more meaningful relationships. Even with friends, partners, and family nearby, the fear of burdening others often keeps us isolated, creating a cycle of exhaustion. In KIN: The Future of Family (Atria Books; on sale November 11, ISBN 9781668060650, $29.00), popular writer and New Yorker cartoonist Sophie Lucido Johnson offers a fresh and hopeful response to today's loneliness epidemic. Blending personal stories with sharp social science, KIN uncovers how the relationships we build beyond the nuclear family can provide emotional support, physical care, and shared resources necessary to survive and thrive in modern life.Johnson illustrates how people are inventing new ways to create communities of care: from living with roommates later in life, to co-parenting with friends, to simply asking for help with errands without feeling guilty. Through these examples and her own experiences, Johnson offers accessible, actionable steps for readers to cultivate their own kinship networks and break free from seclusionBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

It all began in November 1961, when Arthur Duperrault, a 40-year-old optometrist from Green Bay, Wisconsin, finally set out to give his family the adventure he had been dreaming of for years. Arthur had built a thriving practice specializing in contact lenses, a career that afforded him comfort and stability. But he wanted more than the routines of Midwestern life. What he craved was experience, something unforgettable for himself, for his wife Jean, and for their children: 14-year-old Brian, 11-year-old Terry Jo, and little René, just 7 years old. For years, Arthur had talked about escaping the bitter Wisconsin winters, of trading frost for sunlight and snow for turquoise waters. The Bahamas, in particular, held a special place in his memory. He had promised himself then that he would one day return with the family he dreamed of building. That promise became a plan, and over time, a quiet obsession. He saved steadily until, at last, the moment arrived. What was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime would end in murder, and more than a few questions, and only one person would be left to tell the tale. Vessels For Deeper Meanings© 2025 ISBN 979-8-90271-875-8 AbstractThis discussion “Vessels For Deeper Meanings© 2025 ISBN 979-8-90271-875-8”is a literary technique called textual analysis to analyze a biographical essay that describes the life, contributions to scholarship, and artistic output of Dr. William Anderson Gittens, D.D. The analysis explores how the text constructs Dr. William Anderson Gittens, D.D.s' intellectual identity, positions his cultural contributions within Caribbean scholarly discourse, and employs rhetorical strategies to emphasise his global influence. Through examining structure, thematic coherence, and narrative framing, the analysis demonstrates the essay's central function as both documentation and cultural affirmation.Dr. William Anderson Gittens, D.D.ReferencesBhabha, H. Top 10 Photo Books of 2025: Trends, Top Picks & How to Publish Your Own with Daniel Agee (Good Fight Press) From the “10 Frames Per Second” Podcast (Episode 171— Year‑End 2025) “If even one photographer avoids a parasitic publisher because of this episode, it's an hour well spent.” – Daniel Agee Table of Contents Why Photo Books Still Matter in 2025 The State of Photo Book Publishing in 2025 2025 Trends Shaping Photobooks Our Editor's Top 10 Photo Books of the Year (2025) DIY Publishing in 2025: From Blurb to Newspaper‑Club Zines Looking Forward: Diversity, Climate, & Community in 2025+ Take Action – Listen, Read, Create Why Photo Books Matter in 2025 The “10 Frames Per Second” podcast (hosts Joe Giordano and Molly Roberts) brings together photo‑journalists, publishers, and collectors for an annual photo‑book roundup. In the most recent episode they welcomed Daniel Agee—co‑founder of Good Fight—to discuss: The economic realities of publishing a photo book. Emerging themes that dominated the past year and are spilling into 2026. Practical advice for creators who want to self‑publish. If you're looking for fresh titles, insider industry insights, or a step‑by‑step guide to making your own book, keep reading. The State of Photo Book Publishing in 2025 Issue What the Hosts Said (2024) Why It Still Matters for SEO in 2025 High Up‑Front Costs Publishers often charge $8k–$20k (or even $50k) to print a book, leaving many photographers in debt. Target keywords: photo book publishing cost 2025, how much does a photo book cost today? Parasitic vs. Quality Publishers “Parasitic, exploitive” publishers vs. “quality” houses that break even or make modest profit. Optimize for ethical photo book publishers, fair photo book publishing 2025. Self‑Serving Model Some creators profit from selling workshops, museum sales, and speaking gigs, not the book itself. Rank for how to make money with a photo book in 2025. Small Community Size Only 15–25k people worldwide actively buy photo books; reputation spreads fast. Use phrases like photo book community 2025, photo book collectors today. Transparency Is Key Sharing experiences (e.g., “don't pay $25k”) helps protect photographers. Long‑tail keyword: photo book publishing advice for beginners 2025. Takeaway: Know the economics before you sign a contract. Understanding the market helps you negotiate better and choose the right publishing path. 2025 Trends Shaping Photo books 1. Color Dominates the Scene Daniel called himself a “color baby” and highlighted Emily Shur's Sunshine Terrace (color) versus Ian Bates' Weight of Ash (B&W). In 2025, color‑driven storytelling is the norm, with vibrant palettes used to convey mood, climate, and cultural identity. 2. Intimate Family Narratives Continue to Thrive Titles such as Lisa Sogini's In Passing and Elijah Howe's Mike show a growing appetite for personal archives, grief, and memory—a trend that's still expanding in 2025. 3. Climate‑Change Documentation Becomes Urgent Weight of Ash (Ian Bates) and newer titles like “Rising Tides” (upcoming release) prove that eco‑focused photo books are both critically acclaimed and search‑engine friendly. 4. Nostalgia & Re‑imagined Memory Works such as Henry Head's fabricated‑memory series and retro‑styled zines echo a desire for “comforting past” aesthetics. 2025 sees an increase in “memory‑reconstruction” projects that blend staged and documentary photography. 5. DIY & Zine Explosion Small presses (e.g., Pomegranate Press, Charcoal Club) now publish 30+ titles a year. Zines like “Protest City”remain hot because they're cheap, fast, and socially relevant. 6. Diversity Gap Still Visible The hosts noted a 1% presence of women of color on mainstream shelves. In 2025, activist collectives and grant programs are emerging to address this imbalance, creating new opportunities for under‑represented voices. Editor's Top 10 Photo‑Books (2025) While the podcast aired at the end of 2024, the books listed continued to dominate conversations, sales, and awards throughout 2025. # Title & Author Publisher Why It Stands Out (2025 relevance) 1 A Surrender – Markus Naarttijärvi Good Fight IPA Photo Book of the Year; continues to win 2025 exhibition spots. 2 North North South – Ada Gragossian Gost Quiet portraits that bridge B&W (2024) and color (2025) trends. 3 Sunshine Terrace – Emily Shur Deadbeat Vibrant LA suburbia; frequently cited in 2025 “best color photo books.” 4 Weight of Ash – Ian Bates Deadbeat Black‑white documentation of post‑fire West Coast; a reference point for climate‑focused work in 2025. 5 In Passing – Lisa Sorgini LibraryMan (Sweden) Personal grief turned universal; heavily featured in 2025 mental‑health art talks. 6 Mike – Elijah Howe TIS Books Multi‑generational family archive; lauded for its hybrid of historic and contemporary images. 7 American Surfaces – Stephen Shore (original printing) Self‑published Classic modernist, revived interest in 2025 “retro design” movement. 8 Dark Knees – Mark Cohen Self‑published Endless photo flow; used as a case study in 2025 DIY publishing workshops. 9 Rising Tides – Maya Patel Deadbeat First major photo book of 2026 to directly address ocean‑level rise; already generating buzz. 10 Protest City (zine) – Rian Dundon (Episode 87) Independent Timely, affordable; remains a go‑to resource for activist photographers in 2025. Each title links to its publisher or a purchase page (when available) to improve link‑building and user experience. DIY Photo Book Publishing in 2025: From Blurb to Newspaper Club Zines If you're ready to skip the parasitic publisher, here's a 2025‑ready roadmap. 1. Choose Your Platform Platform Ideal For 2025 Price (approx.) Blurb Full‑color photobooks, photo‑calendars $30–$130 per copy Smartpress High‑quality softcover & hardcover $55–$165 per copy Newspaper Club Fast, cheap zines (10‑inch, 20‑page) $1.80 per copy (bulk) Lulu Global POD distribution, ISBN services $22–$115 per copy 2. Keep Production Simple Page count: 20–80 pages works best for self‑publish. Paper: 120‑140 gsm matte for a professional feel without breaking the bank. Bleed: Add 0.125″ (3 mm) bleed to avoid white edges. 3. Photo Book Design Tips for 2026 Use responsive grid systems (12‑column) to ensure visual balance on both print and digital previews. Choose one primary typeface (e.g., GT America) and one accent font for captions. Add an ISBN if you plan to sell through retailers—most POD platforms provide this for a small fee. 4. Printing & Shipping Order a proof copy first; catch color or layout errors. Print in bulk (≥30 copies) to lower per‑unit cost. Ship to local bookstores, photo‑spaces (e.g., Baltimore Photo Space), or directly to collectors. Looking Forward: Diversity, Climate, & Community in 2025+ • More Voices Needed The hosts repeatedly called for photographers of color and women to be featured. In 2025, grant programs (e.g., The Imprint Good Fight Fellowship) and inclusive small presses are actively seeking submissions. • Climate‑Centric Stories Books that document environmental change (e.g., Weight of Ash, Rising Tides) are search‑friendly and align with a growing public interest in sustainability. • Local Photo Spaces as Hubs Places like Baltimore Photo Space act as collaboration labs—they host workshops, zine swaps, and free coffee nights that foster community. • Instagram Still a Gatekeeper Publishers continue to scrutinize follower counts. Building a genuine community and engaging consistently can open doors without paying a publisher upfront. Take Action – Listen, Read, Create Listen – Subscribe to the 10 Frames Per Second podcast on 10fps.net or any major platform. Textual Analysis of St. John's Parish, Barbados © 2025 ISBN 979-8-90271-875-8 .mp3AbstractThis review examines the image of Textual Analysis of St. John's Parish, Barbados © 2025 ISBN 979-8-90271-875-8 capturing the intricate relationship between architecture, nature, and cultural memory. The photograph emphasizes the harmony between the church's weathered Georgian architecture and the vibrant natural elements that surround it, particularly focusing on the interplay of light, texture, and organic life. The church, built from local coral stone, serves as a lasting symbol of colonial history and the enduring spiritual significance within the Barbadian community. Through a cinematographic lens, the image highlights the church's monumental presence, framed by lush tropical foliage, which contrasts with the austerity of the stone structure. The upward angle of the shot contributes to the church's symbolic stature, while the natural light and vibrant greenery reflect the passage of time and the resilience of nature. The photograph provides a nuanced portrayal of the church as both a colonial artifact and a living cultural space, encouraging a reflection on the dynamic interplay between history, identity, and the environment. The combination of architectural beauty and natural surroundings invites contemplation on how built structures are woven into the larger narrative of place, memory, and heritage.Dr.William Anderson Gittens, D.D.ReferencesBhabha, H. #197 - Forbidden stories aren't just about shock—they're about truth we're often afraid to name. I sat down with author Bria Rose to explore how dark romance gives readers a safe place to wrestle with power, consent, and grief, and how a reimagined Beauty and the Beast can turn survival into self‑love. Bria shares how childhood bullying and a lifelong bond with Belle's courage shaped her voice, then opens the doors to Her Dark Promise, where Belle is the Beast, the castle is in France, and the magic is human: trauma, desire, and the choice to heal on your own terms. We move from Disneyland memories to real‑world cast life—4 a.m. shifts, sunrise yoga at the castle, and the electric joy of cast previews that remind grownups why Walt designed the park for them, too. Then Bria breaks down dark romance with clarity: morally gray leads, explicit trigger notes, and tropey pressure cookers that challenge comfort zones without glamorizing harm. She explains how to retell a classic without infringing copyright—keeping essence, ditching replicas—and why nods like “the gray stuff” land best when anchored by character depth. The publishing journey is a masterclass: a three‑month draft, two years of rewrites, a decisive pivot to self‑publishing, and a learning curve through KDP, keywords, ISBNs, and design. Sixty cold emails led to one yes and a special edition—proof that you only need one door to open. Along the way, Bria centers representation and found family: all types of characters, sign language, and a castle that becomes a refuge for anyone told they don't belong. We wrap with new projects—an audiobook, a HarperCollins imprint deal, a spicy Pinocchio retelling—and practical advice for aspiring writers: write the words, then make them better. If this conversation sparked something in you, tap follow, share it with a friend who loves retellings, and leave a quick review. Literature Review: Not Just Monuments: Bussa, Adams, and Barrow are Chapters of a Living History © 2025 ISBN 978-976-97788-9-4AbstractThis literature review explores the lives and legacies of Bussa, Sir Grantley Adams, and Errol Walton Barrow, pivotal figures in Barbados's history. It examines their roles in the island's journey toward freedom, democracy, and independence, focusing on how their actions reshaped Barbados into a sovereign nation. Bussa's leadership in the 1816 slave rebellion symbolises the struggle for emancipation, while Adams's advocacy for labor rights and universal suffrage laid the groundwork for political independence. Barrow's vision as the 'Father of Independence' led to economic sovereignty and social justice. The review analyses the monuments erected in their honour as dynamic symbols that connect citizens to their past and inspire future generations. These monuments encapsulate complex histories, representing key moments such as the fight against slavery, the pursuit of labor rights, and the achievement of political independence. The 'unbreakable Barbadian spirit,' embodied by these figures, reflects resilience and unity in overcoming challenges. This review reinforces that these monuments are not merely tributes but integral components of Barbados's living history, fostering reflection on cultural and spiritual narratives that define collective identities.Dr. William Anderson Gittens,D.D.ReferencesBarbados Pocket Guide. Vienos kaimiņos iegājām, a tur maizīti no cepļa velk. Tūlīt "čigāniem" pa gabalam atlauza. Cik tā maize garda bija! Sasēdušas pa grīdu, ēdām. Smējāmies: savās mājās nekad tā neēstu sausu maizi. Gājām visur kur. Vienā vietā nelaida iekšā. Ko tagad darīsim? Dēļ kā šie nelaiž, ne tiem mazu bērnu, nekā. Aizspiedām durvis – lai guļ pa dienu, ja viņiem miegs nāk." Medņevā "čigānos" gāja no 25. decembra līdz 6. janvārim – Triju kungu dienai. A te kaimiņos bija viena tāda vecene. Viņa ielīda tajā grozā. Tāda sīka vecene bija, un apsēja to grozu apkārt ar deķi, ietaisīja rokturi, un lūk – šarmanka , proti, leijerkaste. A viņa – tur iekšā dzied." Kaladošana sastopama arī Medņevas kaimiņpagastos. Taču medņevietes to dzied garākā versijā nekā citur. Natālija Smuška to skaidro šādi: "To var pārveidot īsāku un garāku. 2018. Notes from Latvia. Multipart Music in the Field. Podcast 243 The Conversation: Unforeseen Encounters in Life: "In the Providential Hand of God”© 2025 ISBN978-976-97788-6-3AbstractThis paper examines Literature Review :The Conversation: Unforeseen Encounters in Life: "In the Providential Hand of God”© 2025 ISBN978-976-97788-6-3(2025), exploring how near-misses—events that narrowly avoid catastrophe—serve as a lens for understanding risk, providence, and human vulnerability. The narrative, set in a quiet suburb, follows a global citizen whose day is punctuated by several near-miss encounters, each revealing the fragility of seemingly calm daily life. Drawing on psychological, theological, technological, and scientific perspectives, this paper contextualizes the protagonist's experiences within contemporary frameworks of risk perception, the role of randomness, and the search for meaning in the face of uncertainty. The phenomenology of near-misses is explored, highlighting their disproportionate psychological impact, as well as their empirical significance in urban planning and other domains (Ibrahim et al., 2021). Furthermore, the paper investigates how these near-misses are interpreted through religious frameworks, where they are often seen as signs of divine providence (Broadrick et al., 2022). In contrast, statistical and algorithmic approaches, such as risk-limiting audits and explainable AI, treat near-misses as stochastic events that signal vulnerabilities within systems (Kaufman & Levy, 2024). The integration of these interdisciplinary insights leads to a nuanced understanding of how near-misses, whether personal or systemic, are sites of meaning-making, resilience, and growth. Ultimately, this paper demonstrates that near-misses, through various interpretative lenses, offer profound opportunities for reflection, action, and the cultivation of resilience in a world marked by uncertainty.Theoretical concepts including near-misses, providence, risk perception, resilience, explainable AI, religious interpretation, stochastic events, and randomness serve as the foundation for this scholarly discussion.Dr. William Anderson Gittens, D.D.Podcast 243The Conversation Unforeseen Encounters in Life In the Providential Hand of God copyright 2025 "ISBN 978-976-97788-6-3, filmed by Dr. William Anderson Gittens,D.D. of Devgro Media Arts Services®2015Bridgetown Barbadosto the Creator for guiding mI wish to express gratitude e and my late parents, Charles and Ira Gittens, for their guidance and creative expression. Episode 92 In the conclusion of Samarcand, we turn away from the fire itself and examine what happened after sixteen teenage girls were arrested — and what the justice system did when it realized it had no good options left. With Samarcand no longer able to house them, the state faced a question it wasn't prepared to answer: What do you do with traumatized, rebellious, and violently angry teenage girls the system has already failed? In this episode, we explore: The debate over how — or whether — the girls should be tried The real possibility of sending minors to adult penitentiaries The fear of releasing them back into the public And the consequences of incarcerating them in county jails unequipped to handle them As the girls were moved through the system, tensions exploded. Jail riots broke out. Authorities lost control. And the public narrative hardened around fear rather than reform. We examine how this case exposed a fundamental flaw in the justice system: it is built to punish or release — not to rehabilitate. Especially not when the defendants are young, angry, and shaped by institutional neglect. Finally, we look at what the Samarcand case changed — and what it didn't. How it influenced conversations around juvenile justice, where reform stalled, and why the same structural failures continue to repeat themselves today. This is not a story about guilt or innocence alone. It's about a system that had already run out of answers before it ever asked the right questions. Viena no visu laiku dižākajām suitenēm – Ilga Leimane – viņa arī ilggadēja etnogrāfiskā ansambļa "Suitu sievas" vadītāja, to skaidroja šādi: "To nosaukumu mēs esam ieguvušas no filmas "Pūt, vējiņi!" 1973. gadā. Mēs pašas tikai tās titros uzzinājām, ka esam "Suitu sievas". Tad mums tā arī tas iegājās, mēs to pieņēmām. No sākuma mēs jau momentā nedodam piparus. Trīne piebilst: "To bezkaunību jau dzied vēlāk tikai" un turpina: "Brīžam jau tā dzied, ka pašai kauns. Ručs man neloka tad, kad es pavisam aplam dziedu." Ručs turpretim saka: "Tad es grūžu sānos: es tev nelocīs! Un galvenais, viņai i jauni, jauni [panti] nāk. Nav mazsvarīgs arī fakts, ka pirms vairāk nekā 30 gadiem veiktā ieraksta magnetofona lente, to digitalizējot, burtiski, izjuka Latvijas Radio skaņu režisora Vara Kurmiņa rokās. Paldies Varim un prieks, ka šo tomēr izdevās saglabāt! Vairāk informācijas un audio: Beitāne, Anda. 2018. Notes from Latvia. Multipart Music in the Field. European Voices: Audiovisuals 1. The conversation concluded with a brief mention of starting to record episode 518 of the Clive Barker Podcast. They noted that Book Sweeps was running a contest to win 10 autographed books, including one by Clive Barker, and shared their own experiences with collecting signed editions. José mentioned that the author is working on a second book and plans to adapt the first book into a graphic novel. They agreed to schedule an interview with the author around January or February, allowing Ryan time to read the book first. José noted that the author is open to discussing the connection between his work and "Nightbreed," though they want to avoid making it seem too derivative. Rawhead Rex Episode Postponed Ryan and José discussed that they would inform Ed that they would not be doing a Rawhead Rex episode this week due to David's absence, opting instead to produce a news episode. They also talked about how the movie adaptation of Rawhead Rex significantly changed the story, including altering the city's name and the characters' backgrounds. José mentioned finding some interesting information about the original art sketches and the reasons behind Eclipse Comics' closure, and planned to share these findings with Ryan. Rawhead Rex Artwork Analysis José and Ryan discussed the artwork for Rawhead Rex, including a fan-made poster for $25 and the challenges of finding certain websites. They analyzed the movie's design choices, noting the unnecessary armor and boots that obscured the character's human shape. Second Printing ISBN and Barcode Discussion José and Ryan discussed a second printing for multiple formats of a book, including Apple Books, Kindle, paperback, and hardcover, each requiring specific ISBNs and barcodes. They agreed on a cost of around $350 for the ISBNs and barcodes. José mentioned needing to save a document and continue working on the second print, while Ryan planned to have dinner and address malware issues on the website. They agreed to continue discussions later in the week about further steps. Book Second Edition Planning Meeting José and Ryan discussed the second edition of a book, including corrections and distribution across various platforms. They reviewed recent sales data from KDP and considered the financial implications of the second printing. They agreed to reschedule a meeting with David to the 17th and planned to review additional information about ISPNs.

Episode 91 Sixteen girls. Multiple fires. A system built to control them — and a desperate act that forced the nation to look closer. In this episode, we step inside the walls of the Samarcand Reform School for Girls in North Carolina, where young women lived under harsh discipline, forced labor, and relentless institutional oversight. On the night they began setting fires, they weren't just striking a match — they were striking back. This is a story of defiance, injustice, and the blurred line between rebellion and survival. Were these girls arsonists — or victims fighting for autonomy the only way they could? Listen as we follow the smoke through history and confront the uncomfortable truth about who society punishes, who it protects, and what incendiary acts are born from desperation. In his explosive new book, ABUSE OF POWER (December 2, 2025; Post Hill Press; ISBN: 979-8895654903;$21.00 Paperback), bestselling author, former noted criminal defense attorney, and TV network legal analyst Mark Shaw affirms RFK, Jr.'s sense that Sirhan Sirhan was not accountable for the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. Shaw, however, refutes the HHS Secretary's theory that his father's murder was linked to the CIA. Backed by shocking new evidence, Shaw exposes the real mastermind—the one with the strongest motive to want RFK dead—New Orleans mafia don Carlos Marcello. Further, the author deduces that Sirhan was “recruited” as a “patsy” to defer suspicions of Marcello's involvement. The result: for nearly 60 years, Sirhan has languished in a prison cell because, Shaw believes, he was denied justice from the moment he was arrested.Based on Shaw's nearly 15 years of extensive research, ABUSE OF POWER exposes, for the first time, the connection between the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy and the mysterious death of famed journalist Dorothy Kilgallen, with Marcello as the culprit for each. The mafia don used patsies to cover his complicity—a pattern that had never been revealed before. For Shaw, the key to this conclusion is an FBI file transcript, an audiotaped “confession” Marcello made to a fellow inmate at a Texas federal prison on December 15, 1985. While expressing his intense dislike of the former president, the mafia don confided, “Yeah, I had the son of a bitch killed. I'm glad I did it. I'm sorry I couldn't have done it myself.” Predictably, the 24-year-old Sirhan became the fall guy. Before getting caught up in the mafia don's murder plot, Sirhan, per FBI records, worked at Santa Anita Racetrack in Southern California where John Shear, a paddock captain hailed as a hero for saving a little girl from being stampeded by a wild horse, hired Sirhan as a “hot walker” for the meager sum of $200 a month.Like a prosecutor building his case, Shaw uses this jaw-dropping admission as the stepping stone to “indicting” Marcello for RFK's murder. Why? Because RFK, who knew the mafia don had orchestrated his brother's assassination to render the then-attorney general powerless, had illegally deported Marcello. So, when RFK announced his campaign for president in March 1968 and then won several primaries, Marcello devised a diabolical plan to protect his multimillion-dollar empire while also exacting his revenge. Self-published authors Anne Ditmeyer and Martin Lake share what it really takes to go indie, from choosing platforms and budgeting for editing, design, and ISBNs to redefining success, avoiding scams, and playing the long game of finding readers and building a sustainable writing life. You'll learn:Why Anne and Martin chose self-publishing over traditional routes and how they framed readers as their gatekeepers. How both authors define success beyond bestseller lists, from “book as business card” to improving the craft across 25 books. The real timelines of an indie career, including slow early sales, backlist effects, and why self-publishing is a marathon, not a sprint. What a realistic budget looks like for editing, design, typesetting, audiobooks, and print on demand, plus where they chose to DIY or outsource. How they use platforms such as Kindle Direct Publishing, Lulu, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, and Shopify, and why most sales still come through Amazon.Practical approaches to marketing that do not require a huge following, including series, mailing lists, events, workshops, and using your existing communities. The role of ISBNs, imprints, metadata, and print on demand for getting into libraries and bookstores, and why in-store placement is harder than it looks.Red flags to watch for with third-party “publishing services” and why due diligence can save you thousands in fees and frustration. Episode 87 Hidden beneath the hills of northeast New Mexico lies a ghost that industry left behind. Dawson was once a model mining town — a company-built community boasting schools, golf courses, and an opera house. Phelps Dodge called it progress. But twice, in just ten years, that progress went up in smoke. In 1913 and again in 1923, massive explosions ripped through Dawson's coal mines, killing 383 miners — fathers, sons, and brothers — in two of the deadliest mining disasters in American history. This episode digs deep into how “safety-forward” operations, good intentions, and one impatient decision turned an idealized town into a field of iron crosses. We'll explore coal dust explosions, early fire protection efforts underground, and how greed, apathy, and bad timing turned progress into tragedy. Because when profit becomes the accelerant… all it takes is a spark. Listen to You Should Be Here on your favorite podcast app including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
