Dr. W. Thomas Boyce, author of The Orchid and the Dandelion, joins me to talk about why some children are biologically more sensitive to their environments and how that sensitivity can become either a challenge or a powerful strength.   Together we explore: - What it means to have either an orchid or a dandelion child and why this exists on a spectrum rather than as a strict either-or. - Why sensitive children often struggle the most in stressful environments and thrive the most in supportive ones. - How nervous system reactivity and regulation show up differently across kids and what that means for how you parent. - The difference between sensitivity and fragility and why sensitive kids can be incredibly resilient when the right supports are in place. - How parents can support orchid children without overprotecting or pushing them too hard.   This episode is designed to help parents better understand their child's sensitivity, feel less afraid of getting it wrong, and walk away with a clearer sense of how to support their child in a way that builds resilience, confidence, and long-term emotional health.     LEARN MORE ABOUT MY GUEST:

Send us a textHealthcare is entering its most consequential design moment in decades. As AI moves from the background into the core of clinical decision-making, diagnostics, and patient experience, the real question isn't what AI can do—it's whether people can trust it.This week on FUTUREPROOF., I'm joined by Peter Skillman, Global Head of Design at Philips, and one of the few leaders shaping what responsible, human-centered AI looks like in healthcare at scale.Peter has spent three decades designing products and systems at the intersection of hardware, software, and services—across Palm, Nokia, Microsoft, AWS, and now Philips. Today, he's helping reimagine healthcare not as a hierarchy of authority, but as an experience built around patients, clinicians, and trust. We talk about:Why AI in healthcare must be designed with people, not just for themWhat happens when teenagers—future patients and clinicians—help design care systemsHow healthcare design is shifting from “what looks impressive” to “what feels humane”Why speed, clarity, and emotional context now matter as much as clinical accuracyThe long timelines of healthcare innovation—and why today's design choices shape the next decadeWhat it really means to make AI visible, explainable, and trustworthy in life-and-death environmentsThis conversation isn't about futuristic demos or abstract ethics. It's about how design decisions today will determine whether AI improves healthcare—or quietly erodes trust in it.

He advocates for a shift towards natural materials, like sheep's wool, which not only provide better insulation but also contribute positively to indoor air quality and overall health. The discussion highlights the need for a holistic approach to home building, considering both the immediate and long-term effects on occupants and the environment. The conversation also explores the innovative idea of building homes with just two people, challenging conventional construction methods.

Designers often think they need more talent, better tools, or the perfect strategy. But what if the real issue is attention? In this episode, we explore why attention is one of your most limited creative resources and how splitting it between fear, comparison, and pressure quietly sabotages your work. Drawing from psychology and neuroscience, we talk about why mindset gets in the way of clarity, why overthinking blocks creative flow, and how focused making changes what you see and what you believe is possible. This conversation is for designers who feel capable but scattered, creative but stuck, and who sense they are missing something they cannot quite name. This program explores the collision of tariffs, sustainability, design business acumen and shifting client expectations, offering a roadmap for navigating the volatility of the 2026 design landscape. Recorded live at Design Hardware in Los Angeles, I gathered a panel of industry leaders to dissect the economic and social forces shaping interior design as we head into 2026. Featuring Eva Hughes (Black House Beige), Shelly Sandoval (The Lauzon Collective), Rachel Grachowski (RHG Architecture), and Priya Vij (Hapny Home), the conversation confronts the “chaos” of the current market—from tariff-induced supply chain disruptions to the critical shortage of skilled labor. Designer Resources Pacific Sales Kitchen and Home. Where excellence meets expertise. TimberTech – Real wood beauty without the upkeep The discussion pivots from the technical challenges of “designing for disaster” and uninsurability to the creative opportunities found in circular economies and intentional sourcing. The panelists argue for a shift away from “fast fashion” interiors toward a “friendliness” of durability, prioritizing materials that pass the “grandparent test” of longevity. Ultimately, the episode emphasizes that in a volatile market, the most valuable currencies are transparency, deep vendor relationships, and educating clients on the true cost of craftsmanship. The “Friendliness” of Durability: A move toward “legacy” materials—like solid brass hardware and high-quality hardwood—that age gracefully and avoid the landfill, countering the disposable nature of current trends. Supply Chain as Design Driver: How tariffs and stock volatility are forcing firms to adopt “high-low” budgeting and pre-purchase models (buying and storing materials early) to protect projects from price surges. Designing for Disaster: The reality of rebuilding in fire-prone zones (like Altadena and the Palisades) is driving a demand for non-toxic, fire-resistant materials and a “circular economy” approach where building products can return to the earth safely. The Labor Crisis: A candid look at the “graying” of the trades; as master craftsmen retire without a new generation to replace them, the industry faces a loss of institutional knowledge and execution capability. Intentionality Over “Modern”: The panel discusses abandoning vague buzzwords like “wellness” and “modern” in favor of deep-dive mood boarding and psychological profiling to align client expectations with reality. Through commentary and post-screening discussion, Matt and Adrian unpack themes of cultural warfare, aesthetics as a battleground, and the line between artistic boundary-pushing and intentional moral degradation. Designed for the Creative Mind

In this episode of Designed for the Creative Mind, I'm sitting down with Natalie Froom, founder and principal designer of Studio 180 Design. Natalie and I go way back—she came through the Interior Design Business Bakery shortly after the pandemic, back when she lovingly calls herself a "baby designer." Fast forward to now, and she's running a growing studio with a team, a refined process, and big plans for the future. This conversation is one of those full-circle moments I absolutely love. We talk about how Natalie's background in psychology and nutrition led her to interior design, how wellness and environment are deeply connected, and how her business (and confidence) evolved over time. If you're a designer who's still figuring out your niche, your process, or your next level—this one is for you.  In This Episode, We Talk About: How Natalie's background in psychology, nutrition, and wellness naturally led her into interior design The connection between mental, physical, and environmental wellbeing (and why it matters in design) Finding your niche by doing the work—and letting your projects guide you Why Natalie focuses on busy, high-level professionals who want a true turnkey experience The importance of process over "just talent" when growing a design business How collaboration (not competition) elevates design and the industry as a whole Balancing beauty with practicality—creating homes that are both elevated and livable Why Natalie believes personality matters more than a rigid design "style" Growing from a solo designer into a team-based, scalable business Looking ahead: international growth, team expansion, and better work-life balance Natalie's journey is such a powerful reminder that you don't have to have everything figured out on day one. Your niche can evolve. Your process can be refined. Your vision can grow bigger than you ever imagined. What matters most is building a solid foundation, staying open to learning, and allowing yourself to grow into the designer—and business owner—you're meant to be. If you've ever felt like you were "behind," unsure of your style, or still finding your footing, I really think this episode will resonate with you. Watching Natalie step into her confidence, refine her process, and build a business that truly supports her life is exactly why I do this work. This conversation is proof that when you focus on process, collaboration, and intention, growth follows—both creatively and professionally. If this episode sparked something for you, I'd love for you to reflect on where you are in your own journey and what your next evolution might look like.   Fix the Leaks: The Hidden Places Your Business Is Quietly Losing Time & Money https://www.addevent.com/event/qjrn64tbm77l   How to Price Your Design Services with Confidence https://thedesignbakehouse.com/pricing-workshop     More about Natalie:  Design is Natalie's lifelong passion, where crafting exquisite interiors is an art of precision. What if you didn't have to feel 1000% confident before hosting a profitable retreat? In this episode, I'm chatting with Sarah Lazarewicz, a therapist, Liberated Business graduate and first-time retreat host about what it looked like to lead her very first overnight retreat. She walked away with $3,000 in profit and a whole new level of confidence. But getting there? That's the real story. Before the retreat even happened, Sarah was deep in self-doubt. Imposter syndrome told her she wasn't qualified. Money fears made her question whether anyone would actually sign up. And more than once, she considered canceling the whole thing and walking away from her dream (again). But Sarah didn't stay stuck in fear. She leaned into community support, worked through what was underneath the doubts, and chose to move forward anyway. The result was a beautiful, heartfelt experience that transformed not just her attendees, but her own belief in what she's capable of as a leader and business owner. If you've been sitting on a big vision but fear keeps holding you back, this episode will give you permission to do it messy, do it scared, and do it anyway.More about Sarah Lazarewicz:Sarah Lazarewicz (MSW, LICSW) is a somatic therapist and trauma specialist based in Minneapolis, MN. She specializes in helping adults recovering from unhealthy childhoods find greater connection and peace in adulthood. She is also passionate about supporting therapists, and leads retreats for therapists focused on preventing burnout and creating deep community among fellow mental health providers.Topics covered on Hosting a Profitable Retreat:The experiences that sparked Sarah's vision for creating a community care retreat for other therapistsThe fears that arose after Sarah had already booked the retreat space and set the dateHow to move forward with hosting a profitable retreat when you're starting without an established audienceThe moment Sarah's co-facilitator had to step back just four months before the retreatThe role coaching and community support in Liberated Business played in Sarah's ability to stay committed to her visionThe difference between being a good leader and trying to control every detail of the retreat experienceSarah's advice for therapists who want to take the leap in hosting a profitable retreat or pursuing any big vision while feeling stuck in fearResources from this episode:Liberated Business program: https://www.thebadtherapist.coach/liberatedbusinessRelated episodes Building Blocks of a Profitable Retreat: How to Design the Perfect Experience [Ep 65]Connect with Sarah Lazarewicz:Website: laztherapy.comConnect with...

In this solo episode of Building Better, I explore a pattern I see everywhere. In engineering, in leadership, and in life. Most systems are built sequentially. One decision at a time. One optimization at a time. One fix after another. That approach works. It is safe. It prevents disasters. But it rarely produces truly great outcomes.Using product development and APQP as a starting point, I contrast sequential design with parallel processing. Learning late versus pulling understanding forward. Optimizing parts versus optimizing the system.I then zoom out beyond engineering to show how the same pattern shows up in home projects, health, parenting, and how we design our lives and organizations. This episode is about capability, foresight, and the difference between reacting your way to “good enough” and designing for something better from the start.Music creditSlow Burn by Kevin MacLeod

Welcome to episode #1020 of Thinking With Mitch Joel (formerly Six Pixels of Separation). At a time when technology listens more closely than people realize and advertising feels less predictive than presumptive, understanding how culture, data and human behavior collide has become essential. David "Shingy" Shing has spent his career at that intersection, shaping how global brands think about creativity, relevance and the emotional consequences of digital systems. Know as the Digital Prophet at AOL (and then Verizon) and a very influential voice in modern branding and innovation, Shingy has advised companies, leaders and creatives on how emerging technologies reshape not just markets, but meaning itself. His work has consistently challenged organizations to move beyond optimization toward empathy, imagination and cultural intelligence. He argues that the most important signals in a data-saturated world are often the quietest ones. That perspective now finds a more personal, reflective outlet in his Substack, Shingy, a newsletter focused on branding, culture, AI and the human side of technology. He explores how conversational data, algorithmic inference and attention-driven business models are altering the relationship between consumers and the systems designed to serve them. Shingy examines why ads increasingly feel intrusive rather than helpful, how conversations themselves have become raw material for targeting and why consumer fatigue is less about frequency than about lost agency. Shingy's work surfaces a growing tension between personalization and privacy, usefulness and surveillance, convenience and control. He argues that as machines become better listeners, brands must become better stewards of restraint, intent and respect... or risk eroding the very relationships they're trying to monetize. Grounded in curiosity and creative provocation, his thinking offers a necessary counterweight to an industry too often obsessed with what can be done instead of what should be done. Enjoy the conversation… Running time: 1:02:31. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Listen and subscribe over at Apple Podcasts. Listen and subscribe over at Spotify. When two young Black men on TikTok brought the quarter-zip into vogue for young folks, they unknowingly waded into some very long-lived discourse on Black fashion and looking "respectable." Today on the pod, we chop it up with Jonathan Square, professor of Black visual culture at Parsons School of Design, about Black fashion, and what's happening more broadly to make this pretty plain sweater the "it" garment.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

The normal supply vs. demand dynamic is changing as consumer use of commercial real estate has shifted. And yes, she said, Canadian and European investors are not liking what they are seeing out of the U.S. government. But the U.S. continues to be the most liquid and active market in the world, and she doesn't see a sustained lack of investment in the cards. THE VIEW FROM THE WINDOW SEAT—Despite its name, Direction of Travel is not a travel magazine. Sure, it's a celebration of a certain kind of travel, but this is not a publication that takes you somewhere. Unless you think of Air World as a destination. Which I do.Founder Christian Nolle is an AvGeek. Which is not an insult. More an acknowledgement of a state of mind. Christian loves all things aviation. And mostly he loves how it looks and feels and, perhaps more importantly, how it looked and felt.Direction of Travel is a loving homage to route maps, in-flight entertainment, ticket offices, and airports. It is a magazine about the culture of flight and the aesthetics one finds in Air World. And for anyone with even the slightest interest in flight, it is a glorious—and loving—celebration of that world.Regular listeners of this podcast may have noticed that I've been speaking to quite a few people from travel magazines recently, and there are reasons for that. One could argue that no other type of magazine has had to weather such a variety of competition from the digital space. And travel itself is subject to forces that have nothing to do with travel itself. But it remains aspirational even to those lucky enough to travel often. So whether you're a frequent flying business person, or someone who might fly once in a while, the magic of lift off—and touch down—remains.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Freeport Press.
