Dr. Judith Joseph is a New York-based psychiatrist, studying happiness. Throughout her life, she's been a high-achiever, graduating from medical school at Columbia and opening her own clinical research institute. She now says she was "pathologically productive" to try to mask feelings of inadequacy. Through her research, and her own experience, Dr. Joseph identified what she refers to as "high-functioning depression". On the outside, she had it all, but she was wrestling with fatigue, poor concentration, and restlessness. In her new book “High Functioning: Overcome Your Hidden Depression and Reclaim Your Joy”, she shares what she's learned with Hoda.

Send us a textEpisode Summary: Dr. Michael Wheeler talks about neuroimmune interactions, exploring how the immune system and brain communicate, particularly through the blood-brain barrier and meninges; how chronic stress and inflammation can alter brain circuits, contributing to mood disorders like depression; how drugs like psilocybin and MDMA may reduce inflammation by modulating immune cells in the meninges, offering potential therapeutic benefits.About the guest: Michael Wheeler, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. His lab studies how immune responses influence behavior, mood disorders, and addiction.Key Conversation Points:The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is not as impermeable as once thought, allowing immune signals like cytokines to influence brain function even in healthy states.Chronic stress can weaken the BBB, increasing inflammation and affecting mood-regulating circuits, potentially contributing to depression.Microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, help maintain neural circuits by pruning synapses and regulating metabolism.Psychedelics like psilocybin and MDMA can reduce inflammation by prompting immune cells (monocytes) to leave the meninges, potentially via vascular effects. These psychedelics may act in a context-specific “window,” requiring a dysregulated tissue state to exert anti-inflammatory effects, not as broad-spectrum anti-inflammatories.Neuroinflammation may underlie some treatment-resistant depression cases, suggesting immunotherapy could complement traditional psychiatric treatments. The brain encodes peripheral immune signals, like gut inflammation, in specific circuits, which can “remember” and recreate inflammatory responses.Aging may naturally increase blood-brain barrier leakiness, heightening the brain's susceptibility to peripheral inflammation.Future research aims to explore how psychedelics influence plasticity and their potential in treating inflammation-related diseases beyond psychiatry.Related episode:M&M 2: Psilocybin, LSD, Ketamine, Inflammation & Novel Support the showAll episodes, show notes, transcripts, and more at the M&M Substack Affiliates: KetoCitra—Ketone body BHB + potassium, calcium & magnesium, formulated with kidney health in mind. This is the story of how I knew I needed to start an anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medication. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, Anxiety and Depression. I also had to switch Primary Care Physicians because my old PCP was not listening to me and seemed very resistant to prescribing any medication for mental health.  Greif, postpartum and the chaos of raising two toddlers sent me spiraling with both anxiety and depression. I got to a point where managing my mental health felt like a full time job, I did not have the time or the energy to manage my depression. My anxiety was making my ADHD worse, I couldn't get anything done and I knew in my gut that it was time to talk with my doctor about getting on something for my depression. I was breastfeeding at the time, and I had read that anti-anxiety medication can help with the symptoms of ADHD. I also knew that often-times one medication can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. After talking with my doctor, she recommended Zoloft or Sertraline. I had very few side effects, and after about a week or 10 days, I noticed a difference. After two or three weeks I felt like my old self again. I was laughing and could enjoy my children and my life as it was, instead of drowning everything in toxic positivity and hoping for the best.     Topics Covered: Why I wanted to switch primary care physicians How grief and postpartum contributed to my mental health How I knew I needed an Anti-Depressant Medication How I knew I needed an Anti-Anxiety Medication How to talk with your doctor about mental health How I got diagnosed with ADHD, Anxiety and Depression   Thanks for listening! What if improving your gut health didn't require expensive supplements, fancy tests, or endless trial and error? In today's episode, we dive into the often-overlooked lifestyle foundations that can significantly improve digestion, reduce bloating, and help you finally feel good after meals without needing a single lab result. We start with meal hygiene: how you eat is just as important as what you eat. Digestion begins in the brain, and simple changes like slowing down, turning off distractions, and chewing thoroughly can kickstart your gut's natural processes. You'll learn how stress and multitasking at meals divert blood flow away from the gut and how to set the stage for digestion by being present, cooking your own food, and even doing a quick breathing exercise. Next, we cover meal timing, and how aligning your eating habits with your body's natural rhythms can support the "housekeeping" system of your gut. You'll learn how a consistent eating schedule and small shifts like starting your day with warm lemon water can make a big impact. We also tackle what to eat specifically for constipation and diarrhea. From fiber types and fluid intake to soothing herbal teas and smart food swaps, you'll walk away with real strategies that work. Plus, we share our go-to cheat sheets for stool consistency and explain when it is time to use supplements or run labs. Even if supplements become part of your long-term plan (like they are for some of our clients), these lifestyle shifts are the groundwork for sustainable gut health.  Listen in and take the first step toward better digestion naturally.  Time Stamps: (3:32) GI Issue Call Recently (6:56) The Three Big Pillars of Gut Health (7:19) How You Eat and Meal Hygiene (13:47) Duration of Eating and Slowing Down (16:52) Drinking Too Much Water During Meals? (18:02) Deep Breaths Before Eating (18:57) Lowering The Intensity of Exercise (20:03) Meal Timing (22:24) My Preferred Tea Blend (24:57) What To Eat (26:40) Working Through Constipation (31:06) One Supplement We'll Discuss (37:57) Reach Out If You're Interested In Coaching---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. ---------------------Download Our FREE Metabolism-Boosting Workout Program---------------------Join the Women's Metabolism Secrets Facebook Community for 25+ videos teaching you how to start losing fat without hating your life!---------------------Click here to send me a message on Facebook and we'll see how I can help or what best free resources I can share!---------------------Interested in 1-on-1 Coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts? Crushed by Depression, Called by God: How Faith and Purpose Saved Mason Smith   In this powerful and vulnerable episode of Domestic Dad: Cleaning Up The Mess, host Nick Barnett sits down with Mason Smith—a former youth pastor, missionary, husband, and father—for a deeply personal journey through depression, a suicide attempt, spiritual awakening, and calling.   Mason didn't grow up in chaos. He had a loving family and a strong foundation. But his world was shattered by a series of tragic losses that opened the door to darkness, depression, and numbness. At just 17 years old, he sat on his bed with a loaded shotgun, ready to end his life—until God intervened in a miraculous way.   This episode explores that moment—and everything that followed. Mason shares the long road from surviving to living: walking away from the fence of apathy, wrestling with his faith, and slowly rebuilding his life one surrendered step at a time. From college disillusionment to his first mission trip that awakened a true love for God, Mason's story is one of obedience, purpose, and the relentless pursuit of truth.   Nick and Mason dive into the messiness of ministry, the beauty of fatherhood, and the calling that eventually led Mason to become the Asia Director for a global missions organization. Along the way, we hear about his love story with his wife, raising two boys, and what it means to lead with humility, honesty, and faith.   For anyone who's ever wondered if their past disqualifies them from their purpose—this conversation is proof that your darkest moments can become your greatest testimony. Mason's story is a reminder that no matter how far you've fallen, God isn't done with you yet.   Timestamps:   00:00 Introduction and Greetings 00:30 Childhood Memories 02:22 First Encounter with Loss 04:48 Struggles with Depression 06:19 Turning Point and Faith Journey 08:43 High School Challenges 18:59 College Life and Spiritual Awakening 23:53 Mission Work and Personal Growth 30:34 Finding Love and Building a Family 37:56 Ministry and Life Lessons 39:31 Supporting Each Other in Ministry 40:24 A Call to Missions 42:06 A Divine Encounter 44:53 Stepping Out in Faith 45:46 Finding the Right Fit 48:37 The Importance of Support 56:53 Fatherhood Reflections 01:06:18 Advice for Those in Despair 01:14:50 The Power of Community 01:15:27 Final Thoughts and Gratitude   ⸻   Website: www.domesticdadproject.com YouTube: @DomesticDadProject Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DOMESTICDADPROJECT/ Instagram: @the_domestic_dad_project   ⸻   Support Mason's Missions Work: Visit www.storylinemissions.org, click on “Give,” and consider donating to Mason Smith or the Asia missions team. “I think that my analytic awareness of denial and projection and the concreteness of psychic reality when executive function wanes, that I could help the other caretakers to understand some of what was going on - to give them a way to understand that relieves their sense of frustration and uncertainty. I think that the analytic awareness of denial, of projection, that these things are not generally recognized by many caretakers, but it does reorient and make the caretaking function much more tolerable. It expands the understanding of what goes on in the waning personality. I also think that analytic work fosters the capacity to tolerate ambiguity, uncertainty, pain and frustration and in that way may allow us, the analytic mind, to tolerate some of the intense affect - as sort of the phrase I love from an Italian analyst, as “writings waiting to be completed” - by the analytic mind. We can hold and metabolize the difficulty and offer that kind of function rather than unpleasantness just to be rid of. These are some of the things that I felt are useful as a psychoanalyst.” Episode Description: We begin with describing how dementia is a cloud over our field both for individuals and for institutes. Maxine then introduces us to 'Sally' who was her analysand 40 years prior to recontacting her to care for her cognitive decline. Maxine mentions that just hearing her former patient's voice instantly brought alive her past experiences with her. We discuss how she approached the issue of caring for her and her neurological condition. We consider the at times overlap between psychogenic and organic symptoms and she shares with us her countertransference experiences of herself losing her memory. Maxine also shares her approach to answering Sally's questions about the possibility of recovering. We close with her describing how she feels that being an analyst aided her care of Sally and what she learned from that experience that she brought to her other patients -"to face the pain of difficult truths."   Our Guest: Maxine Anderson, MD, is a training and supervising analyst at the Northwestern Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, the Seattle Psychoanalytic Institute and Society and the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society. Originally trained in psychiatry, she pursued psychoanalytic training in Seattle in the early 1970s and then pursued post-graduate work at the British Psychoanalytical Society for 8 years, returning to Seattle in 1992.  Thereafter, she became a Founding Member of the Northwestern Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Maxine has published several articles, and chapters and 3 books, the most recent being The Hardest Passage: a psychoanalyst accompanies her patient's journey into dementia (Karnac, 2025). Feeling herself now to be an Elder in life and in her field, Maxine hopes to continue to think and write about this phase of personal and professional life.   Recommended Readings: Balfour, A. Welcome to Season 13 of the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, where we delve into the fascinating intersection of brain science, emotional intelligence, and educational training for enhanced well-being and performance. This episode features Sifu Boggie, also known as Paul Brighton, who brings over 40 years of expertise in qigong, a discipline involving breath work and self-healing techniques. As stress and anxiety reach unprecedented levels worldwide, Sifu Boggie shares how qi-gong can help alleviate ailments like chronic pain, migraines, and even mental health issues. Join host Andrea Samadi in an enlightening discussion about the role of mindfulness and meditation in managing stress and maintaining mental peace. Sifu Boggie, introduced to martial arts at the age of 12, guides listeners through practical exercises for achieving emotional and physical balance, including breathing techniques and posture corrections that can be easily integrated into daily life. Discover how understanding and altering your energy can bring about transformational changes, fostering a stronger connection between mind and body. For today's episode #362, our next guest caught my eye as I noticed that my stress levels have reached some high numbers recently, with the data I see from my Whoop wearable device. Watch our interview here https://youtu.be/lYexvaGU8M0 For today's episode #362, we meet with Sifu Boggie, where we looked at: ✔ How Paul Brighton (Sifu Boggie) discovered this pathway from Chaos to Calm, when he was 12 years old. ✔ What classes does he teach, and how does he know how to help someone, or guide them towards improved health? ✔ How would Sifu help me with persistent neck pain? ✔ How can we learn to open our minds to learn deeper truths, that can help propel us forward? While my average daily stress has decreased by 12% over the past 6 months (Whoop measurements) with the average amount of daily stress I'm facing dropping from close to 4 hours/day to 3 hours and 25 minutes, I know I still occasionally see days where daily stress hits well over 6 hours/day. I know there's got to be something ELSE I can be doing to mitigate this stress, since I know that dis-ease in the body, leads straight to disease. It's clear that globally, we have reached unpresented times with anxiety, stress and depression. I can't be the only one who wonders what ELSE can I be doing. We know that: 1 in 5 Americans suffers from a mental illness (NIMH). Anxiety disorders are the highest reported mental health issue in the US with 42.5 million Americans claiming to suffer from this illness. (Mental Health America). Mental illnesses start showing symptoms by age 14 (National Alliance on Mental Illness), About 1 in 4 American adults suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year, and one in 10 will suffer from a depressive illness, such as major depression or bipolar disorder (Johns Hopkins). 10.7% of the world suffers from some form of mental illness. (Our World in Data). STATISTICS FROM https://www.thezebra.com/resources/research/mental-health-statistics/  While looking at my own stress one day, I received an introduction to our next guest, who will share the knowledge he has gathered over the past 40 years, where he has learned how to help others help themselves with ailments like... Anxiety, Stress, Chronic Pain, Depression, Fibromyalgia, Crohn's Disease, Migraines, ME, MS, Arthritis, poor circulation, back problems and so much more. He does this by teaching us Qi Gong (Breath work exercises) and self-healing techniques that will help you to maintain your body, mind and consciousness. Without further ado, let's meet Sifu Boggie (Paul Brighton) from the UK (where I was born) and see what he can teach us with his wisdom and knowledge from being immersed in this work, since he was 12 years old. Welcome Sifu Boggie! Thank you for coming on the podcast today! Where exactly have I reached you today? (I was born in Worthing, Sussex).  INTRO:  Sifu, I listened to some of your past podcast episodes, and I enjoyed learning through your experiences. I do want to start by going back in time to when you were age 12, and met someone who saw that you were talented, when you felt like you didn't belong. Can you start with explaining how you found this pathway to help others understand themselves better at a young age? Q1: What does your name mean and how does it tie into our podcast where we work on learning strategies to be the best versions of ourselves? Q2: I can see your talent and what makes you truly unique and I'm jumping at the chance to speak with you, to ask you questions for your perspective, but what has been your experience having a talent that takes ancient practices that can hold the secret for healing modern ailments? Can you break down WHAT exactly it is that you do in your classes, and how each class is tied to support a specific ailment of injury? Qi Class: Qigong for Health, Fitness and Well-being, what ever your ailment or injury There is a Qigong for it... Jing Class: Neigong ( Qigong Yoga) great for Stretching the body, Strengthening the tendons and releasing trauma/ PTSD/ Depression... Shen Class:  Shengong ( Qigong Meditation) lots of different variations, especially "the Island" a Daoist Meditation to heal mind, body and Spirit plus other Energy Meditation styles... Eastern Reiki Class: The Traditional Version of Reiki has Hatsurie Ho ( Japanese Qigong), Kotodama ( Japanese Mantra), and Reiju ( Empowerments) done as a Weekly Class so you build and grow the energy and Traditionally Symbols were not used. DragonDog Shaman Reiki: A particular Version of Shun Qi Shen ( Chinese Reiki) based on the Daoist Shaman practice, this has 3 Classes... Theory, Practical and Lightcode... Q2B: So if I have pain in my neck, that's persistent and always there, how would you help me to eliminate this pain in my neck? I ask, as it's been this way for me for over 20 years, and I've tried everything! Chiropractic work, massage, oils, saunas, and even hypnotherapy (which I would have to say is highly effective). What would you say to me about this persistent pain in my neck and how would YOU solve it? Q3: I know a lot of this involves the mind. I heard you say something that made me think a bit, and I wonder if you can explain how you interpret when Hong-Kong, American martial arts and actor, the late Bruce Lee said “it's like a finger pointing away to the moon” urging us to NOT concentrate on our finger, or we will miss “all that heavenly glory” and that we must NOT think, but learn to FEEL more. How does this quote tie in here? Learn to listen to our body and feel more, rather than get stuck focusing on (our finger) or whatever it is that hurts us in our body? What would you say here? Q4: So here's another quote I heard you say that I just love. I connected with it as I worked for 6 years in the motivational speaking industry and met some of the greats in this industry, right alongside those who had all risen to the top in their careers. Most that I met were open to learning NEW strategies and ideas for success, that took them to these great heights, and they didn't have to be scientifically proven, they just had to work. You mentioned a quote by Rockefeller that said “millionaires don't use astrology, billionaire do” suggesting that more successful individuals, particularly those at the highest wealth levels, may leverage astrology for strategic insights beyond simple fate beliefs. Can you explain how this quote ties into your work? Q5: Before my next question, I would love it if you could give us your take on Energy 101 and what we should all know about energy fields, and frequencies? I've mentioned this concept on a few different episodes where I talk about how we are all spiritual beings, with an intellect, living in a physical body (EP 67[i]) and that we must change our frequency to move to different levels of vibration. How would YOU explain this image and concept? Q6: Since we now can see how important energy is, in Arizona, where I live, we can find stores on reading our energy, our aura (I've done this recently) or classes on how to bend a spoon, psychokinesis and dowsing (all classes that I took the FIRST year I moved here over 24 years ago). Can you tell me what you learned from your work with Uri Geller years ago that might open our listener's eyes to different techniques for success that you have seen either yourself or others use to give them a razor's edge for success? Q7: Ok, another quote here from Nikolas Tesla “magic is science not yet understood.” I've been working hard to make the connection with neuroscience and some of those age old success principles that I saw working in the seminar industry back in the late 1990s. Our most downloaded episode is a 4-part series on Applying The Silva Method[ii] for Increased Intuition, Creativity and Focus. My favorite quote from this series is that “once we learn to use our minds to train it, it will do some astounding things for us, as you will soon see.” What kind of magic have you seen over the years with people you work with who have learned to train their mind (like Bruce Lee was so well known for?). Q8: In the Silva Method, he has this activity where we learn how to see things on the “screen of our mind.” What have you learned from your study of ancient physicists about developing our minds, or our “third eye” and why is this advanced awareness important if we want to take better control our our health and wellness, as well as our success, in the future?   Q9: This has been a lot, and I could keep asking you questions, but I wonder, “where do we begin?” I didn't know that Yin/Yang (dark/light) means Tai Chi or that Dao means “the path, or the way.” Can you highlight the best way forward for someone who notices they are off balance, like me, and how to get started on a better way forward? Q10: Have I missed anything important? Sifu, I want to thank you very much for meeting with me, to open my mind up further with your knowledge and wisdom that you have collected and implemented since you were a young boy. I'm grateful to have had this chance to speak with you. Where can people learn more about your classes and workshops? Now that we have the ability to see inside the brain without opening anyone's skull, we'll be able to map and define brain activity and peg it to behavior and feelings. Right? Well, maybe not, or maybe not just yet. It seems the workings of our brains are rather too complex and diverse across individuals to really say for certain what a brain scan says about a person. But Nobel prize winner Eric Kandel and researcher Cynthia Fu tell us about groundbreaking work in the field of depression that just may help us toward better diagnosis and treatment.Anything that helps us treat a disease better is welcome. Doctors have been led astray before by misunderstanding a disease and what makes it better. Neurologist Robert Sapolsky tells us about the turn of the last century, when doctors discovered that babies who died inexplicably in their sleep had thymus glands that seemed far too large. Blasting them with radiation shrank them effectively, and so was administered to perfectly healthy children to prevent this sudden infant death syndrome...Leadership support for Radiolab's science programming is provided by the Simons Foundation and the John Templeton Foundation. Episode Description & Show Notes: This week, a fitness influencer went viral for saying people over 200 pounds shouldn't be allowed in Pilates class—and that instructors with a “gut” shouldn't be teaching. Yes, she deleted the video. But the damage was done. Thousands of people agreed with her. This is the fitness industry we're still up against. And in this episode, we're not just pushing back—we're burning the whole narrative down. We break down 13 research-backed reasons why building your fitness brand around body transformation isn't just unethical—it's lazy, outdated, and costing you money. What we cover: Why transformation-based branding leads to low retention and high churn How extrinsic motivation backfires (and what the neuroscience says) The impact of shame-based messaging on mental health How to actually build emotional loyalty that fuels long-term growth Why purpose-driven brands scale better—and feel better This episode is part reckoning, part guidebook. We brought the science, the lived experience, and the tools to help you build a brand that doesn't just sell workouts—but moves people. Whether you've already left the old model behind or are still working your way out of it—this one's for you. If this message resonates, share it. Post it. Text it to your team. Forward it to another studio owner. This is how we shift the industry—together.   SPRING INTO SUMMER AUDITS (Limited-Time Offer) Want to be sure your brand is saying what it's supposed to—and that your class experience is reinforcing it? John Vervaeke is joined by Atheist Spiritual Director, Britt Hartley to explore what happens after belief falls apart. Britt shares her personal journey through suicidal nihilism and how mysticism, resonance, and play led her to rediscover meaning and orientation in life without needing to return to religion. John and Britt challenge the limits of therapeutic models, explore the difference between propositional truth and lived wisdom, and ask whether modern secular culture has lost the capacity to sustain sacredness. This Lectern is a philosophical act of compassion, bridging ancient spiritual technologies and contemporary existential pain.
