Welcome to a compelling conversation on Trending in Education, where we explore how innovative thinking and technology can transform public education. In this episode, Mike Palmer talks with Michelle Vilchez, CEO, and Sean Michael Hardy, Vice President of National Organizing and Advocacy, from Innovate Public Schools. They discuss their groundbreaking work in empowering parents and leveraging artificial intelligence to create a new tool called AI-EP, a project developed in collaboration with Northeastern University's Burnes Center for Social Change. Why You Should Listen: Empowering Parents: This episode highlights how a nonprofit organization is shifting power to parents, particularly those from marginalized communities, by giving them the tools and platforms to advocate for their children's education. AI for Good: You'll hear about a practical and inspiring use of AI that addresses a real-world problem and closes equity gaps, rather than exacerbating them. Community-Led Innovation: The conversation showcases a powerful model of "co-design," where tech developers, educators, and community members work together to create solutions that are both effective and sustainable. Key Takeaways: Innovate Public Schools is a movement, not a network. Michelle and Sean clarify that their organization's mission is to mobilize families to demand high-quality schools for their children, not to operate charter schools. They focus on campaigns for black literacy, special education, and high-impact tutoring. AI-EP addresses a critical need. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is often a dense, 50-page legal document that can be intimidating for parents, especially those who don't speak English or have low reading comprehension. The AI-EP tool translates the IEP into a parent's native language and allows them to ask questions, effectively serving as a chatbot to help them understand and engage with the plan. Collaboration is key to innovation. The AI-EP project was a collaborative effort involving Innovate Public Schools, Northeastern University, and the Learning Tapestry. By bringing together tech developers and parents, they created a tool that has had a transformational impact on users. Parent advocacy drives policy change. Innovate's parent leaders have not only influenced local policy but also co-authored legislation. Their advocacy led to the passage of California's Senate Bill 445, which mandates that IEP documents be translated into the 10 most common languages across the state, benefiting over 800,000 students. The model is replicable. Michelle and Sean stress that their goal is not to be "gatekeepers" of this innovation, but to share the model so it can be replicated across the nation to address a variety of educational challenges. They believe that organizing around education is crucial because it is the "building block" for everything else in life, from economic stability to generational wealth. Don't miss this conversation. Listen in to learn how Innovate Public Schools is harnessing the power of community and technology to create a more equitable and participatory education system. With extensive research, TruStage designs products and solutions that are customized to this group's needs, unlike many institutions that cater to the top percentiles. By offering protection products such as life insurance, TruStage helps credit unions not only serve their members better but also generate sustainable income to support their growth. This comprehensive approach leads to improved treatment adherence and patient satisfaction while reducing emergency room visits and hospitalization. The care team serves as an extension of the medical decision-makers, helping to manage care across multiple specialists, advising on overcoming side effects, and reducing logistical hurdles to ease the burden on physicians and caregivers, ultimately improving patient outcomes. Kamal explains, "Cancer care navigation is really about creating a roadmap for patients. It's making sure they're not left alone to piece together appointments, interpret side effects, or figure out how to pay for medications. The role of a navigator here is really to guide them through the whole journey. That includes the medical components that many folks are familiar with, but also the emotional, financial, and logistical components that come with a cancer diagnosis. The evidence is really clear, given that more than half of emergency department visits and nearly a quarter of hospitalizations related to cancer care are actually avoidable, that responding rapidly to these situations is key." "In our navigation program, we are rooted in patient-centric navigation, meaning we ask them what the transportation difficulties are that they might face. Who is your caregiver and their support? What do you do for work? What are your cultural and religious beliefs? All of those play a big part in dealing with the new diagnosis of cancer. This Day in Legal History: Earl Warren AppointedOn October 2, 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Earl Warren as the 14th Chief Justice of the United States, setting in motion one of the most transformative periods in Supreme Court history. Warren, who had previously served as Governor of California and was the Republican nominee for Vice President in 1948, was a surprise choice—appointed during a recess of the Senate following the death of Chief Justice Fred Vinson. Though Eisenhower reportedly later regretted the decision, Warren would go on to lead a Court that dramatically expanded civil rights, civil liberties, and judicial power.Under Warren's leadership, the Court issued a series of landmark decisions, beginning with Brown v. Board of Educationin 1954, which declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. The Warren Court also established the principle of “one person, one vote” in legislative apportionment, expanded the rights of criminal defendants in cases like Gideon v. Wainwright and Miranda v. Arizona, and reinforced the wall between church and state. Warren was known for his ability to forge consensus among justices, often securing unanimous decisions in major cases to strengthen the Court's moral authority. His tenure marked a fundamental shift in constitutional interpretation, emphasizing equality, due process, and the role of the judiciary in correcting social injustices. While praised by many for championing individual rights and the rule of law, the Warren Court also faced significant criticism from those who viewed its decisions as judicial activism. Warren retired in 1969, but the legal legacy of his Court continues to shape American law and society.New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit and an emergency motion against U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), accusing them of unlawfully withholding nearly $34 million in funding for New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The MTA oversees subway, bus, and commuter rail systems across New York City and surrounding areas. James filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, seeking a temporary restraining order to preserve the funds while the legal case proceeds.According to James, DHS abruptly reduced the funding allocation from nearly $34 million to zero, a move she described as unlawful and politically motivated. Her office emphasized that the emergency request does not seek immediate disbursement, but rather aims to prevent the funds from being lost while the court reviews the matter. She warned that the funding freeze could endanger the safety of millions of transit riders in New York. This legal action comes amid broader concerns raised by the U.S. Transportation Department, which recently threatened to withhold 25% of MTA's federal transit funding unless improvements are made to track worker safety protocols. DHS did not provide an immediate response to requests for comment.New York AG James sues Homeland Security for nearly $34 million over transit funding freeze | ReutersApple and OpenAI asked a U.S. judge to dismiss a lawsuit brought by Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, over claims that their partnership harms competition. xAI's suit, filed in August, seeks billions in damages and argues that Apple's integration of ChatGPT into its devices gives OpenAI an unfair advantage while sidelining rival products like Musk's Grok chatbot. Apple and OpenAI countered that their deal is not exclusive and that Apple plans to work with other generative AI providers.Apple's lawyers emphasized the openness of the agreement, asserting that the arrangement does not prevent competition or violate antitrust laws. In a separate filing, OpenAI described Musk's legal actions as part of a broader “campaign of lawfare” against the company, referencing previous lawsuits Musk has filed, including one challenging OpenAI's shift from nonprofit to for-profit status.OpenAI further argued that xAI had not demonstrated concrete harm or the kind of anticompetitive behavior that antitrust law is designed to prevent. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 before departing, has accused the company and CEO Sam Altman of straying from its original nonprofit mission.Apple, OpenAI ask US judge to dismiss Musk's suit over competition claims | ReutersLawyers representing Prince Harry and other public figures accused the Daily Mail publisher, Associated Newspapers (ANL), of also targeting Prince William and Princess Kate in an ongoing privacy lawsuit. The new allegations, presented in filings at London's High Court, suggest that confidential details about William's 21st birthday were obtained through “blagging”—a deceptive tactic to access private information. Kate was allegedly targeted by a private investigator working for a Mail journalist.Prince Harry and six others, including Elton John and his husband David Furnish, are suing ANL for alleged privacy violations dating back 30 years. The lawsuit accuses ANL of unlawful activities such as voicemail hacking, obtaining medical records by deception, and even burglary. ANL has denied the claims and called them baseless and exaggerated. A trial is scheduled for early 2026.The publisher pushed back in court, arguing that the claimants failed to connect the alleged misconduct to specific journalists or investigators. They also sought to exclude findings from earlier cases against other newspaper publishers like News Group Newspapers and the Daily Mirror. ANL accused two claimants, Sadie Frost and Simon Hughes, of manipulating the timing of story publications to evade a statute of limitations—though the court had previously ruled in the claimants' favor on that issue.Prince Harry attended the hearing remotely, while several other claimants were present in court. This lawsuit marks the first time ANL has been directly implicated in the phone-hacking scandal that has plagued British tabloids for nearly two decades.Daily Mail publisher asks UK court to limit Prince Harry lawsuit | Reuters This is a public episode. 400 Starlink Internet for Pilots: Safety, Costs, and Future Tech with Sporty's Bret Koebbe

    Aviation News Talk podcast

Max talks with Bret Koebbe, Vice President of Sporty's Pilot Shop, about how Starlink internet access is entering general aviation cockpits and what that means for pilots today and in the future. For decades, cockpit connectivity was mostly reserved for the airlines. Systems like Gogo provided limited bandwidth, required expensive antennas, and were impractical for piston aircraft. GA pilots relied on ADS-B weather, portable receivers, or Iridium text messaging to stay connected. That landscape has shifted with the Starlink Mini, a portable satellite dish small enough to fit in a 182 or Cirrus, delivering broadband internet in flight.   Benefits for Pilots Bret outlines the legitimate safety advantages. Pilots can text family or FBOs, update arrival times, and share real-time position updates. More importantly, Starlink could enable widespread filing of PIREPs directly from an iPad, improving weather data for all. Weather cameras, now integrated into ForeFlight, could become accessible in flight, offering pilots actual visual conditions instead of relying solely on METARs or AWOS reports. Risks and Distractions But Starlink also poses serious distraction risks. Bret shares a personal story: during a family trip, he streamed an NFL game mid-flight, only to realize within seconds how dangerously it diverted his attention. He immediately shut it off, but the experience was a powerful reminder of how alluring the technology is. Max underscores that the NTSB lists distractions as a top factor in loss-of-control accidents, and Starlink could easily become an “attractive nuisance” in cockpits. Cost and Service Plans Starlink Mini hardware is about $499, and the Local Priority plan runs $65/month for 50 GB, sufficient for most piston pilots. For corporate pilots and jets, the Global Priority plan at $250/month supports higher speeds and offshore operations. Bret explains the differences in speed limitations (350 mph for Local Priority vs 550 mph for Global Priority) and how to choose based on aircraft type and mission. Mounting and Power Solutions Because Starlink Mini lacks an internal battery, powering it is key. Bret recommends Sporty's Flight Gear Max Battery, capable of outputting 140 watts via USB-C, giving about three hours of Starlink runtime. For longer flights, higher-capacity solutions exist. Mounting options include suction cup mounts for rear windows (ideal in high-wing Cessnas and Cirrus aircraft) or side-window solutions in low-wing and corporate jets. Positioning is critical—blocking the dish with wings can cause dropouts. Practical Tips Bret offers pilot-tested tips: Create a custom iPad Focus Mode that blocks notifications except for critical texts when ForeFlight is open. Establish SOPs—use Starlink only in cruise and disconnect before descent. Enable Low Data Mode on devices to prevent iCloud or app background syncing from eating up gigabytes. Don't rely on Starlink radar or traffic feeds, which have even more latency than ADS-B. The Future of Connected Cockpits Looking ahead, Bret sees huge potential. Automatic turbulence reporting from onboard sensors could update in real time if aircraft have internet connections. Engine monitor data could be streamed to ground support for diagnostics, offering pilots in-flight decision support. Eventually, Starlink-enabled cockpits could complement FAA datalink systems like CPDLC, streamlining communication and safety services. Final Thoughts This milestone Episode 400 illustrates how cockpit technology continues to evolve rapidly. Affordable internet access brings new possibilities for safety, convenience, and passenger comfort, but it also requires disciplined use to prevent dangerous distractions. As Bret and Max agree, the future of aviation will be defined by how responsibly pilots integrate these new tools. Whether you fly a piston single, a turboprop, or a corporate jet, Starlink is likely to shape your cockpit experience in the coming years. This episode gives pilots the knowledge to make informed decisions as they consider adopting Starlink for their aircraft. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Jason Nies, proprietor of the renowned Inn at Honey Run, and LaVern Hershberger, Vice President of Homestead Furniture. This week's show takes us to the heart of Ohio's Amish country, where we dive into a truly unique partnership: The Inn at Honey Run's iconic Club Level Honeycombs—rooms built into the hillside—are set for a major redesign with Homestead Furniture leading the transformation. Jason and LaVern share the story of how their professional paths crossed through local tourism efforts, their shared mission to honor the area's heritage while staying relevant, and how their businesses are making an impact far beyond their own walls by referring guests to one another. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why both companies are focused on staying relevant to new generations of customers while remaining true to their roots and values What makes Homestead Furniture stand out in the Amish furniture industry How the redesign of the Inn at Honey Run's Club Level Honeycomb rooms will offer guests twelve distinct themed experiences to appeal to diverse visitor preferences Why community collaboration and participating in local tourism committees have been a catalyst for business innovation and personal connection in Holmes County How tourism and destination marketing directly impact both the resort and furniture business, creating a full-circle relationship where each refers customers to the other and enhances the local economy LaVern and Jason's advice on making partnerships work, including the importance of aligned values and trust in each other's expertise Staying Relevant in a Changing Landscape Both the Inn at Honey Run and Homestead Furniture have deep roots in their community—Jason as the inn's third owner and LaVern as part of Homestead's third generation. But remaining core to your brand while evolving to meet modern tastes is a challenge. By integrating contemporary designs and offering full customization, Homestead ensures their craftsmanship appeals to both long-standing customers and a new, design-savvy generation. Jason describes The Inn at Honey Run as “not an Amish country experience” in the traditional sense, but rather “an affordable luxury getaway” located in natural beauty, complete with unique hillside Honeycomb rooms, an award-winning restaurant, and an open-air art museum. By continuously refining the inn's offerings, Jason is setting a new standard for rural luxury and authenticity. A Vision for Diverse, Immersive Stays At the heart of this collaboration is the Honeycomb Homecoming project, a complete reimagining of The Inn at Honey Run's signature Honeycombs—earth-sheltered suites built into a hillside and renowned for privacy and natural immersion. What makes this project groundbreaking is its approach to guest experience. Each of the 12 Honeycomb rooms will be uniquely themed, offering distinctive moods, decor, and even scents to transform the atmosphere. Thanks to the partnership with Homestead, guests will soon be able to choose their ideal ambiance, whether rustic, coastal, mid-century, or traditional, along with the highest level of Amish craftsmanship. Creating a Destination, Not Just a Stay The connection between The Inn at Honey Run and Homestead Furniture extends beyond their immediate partnership. Both Jason and LaVern are actively involved in local tourism development, serving on the chamber's tourism committee to promote Holmes County while preserving authentic Amish culture. Their partnership reinforces Holmes County's status as a top tourist destination in Ohio, attracting visitors eager to escape city life and immerse themselves in natural beauty. The collaboration is full circle; visitors drawn by Homestead's reputation for quality design are guided to stay at the inn, while hotel guests experience Homestead's work firsthand, perhaps inspiring a furniture investment of their own. KISSEL, RUBIO, BATCHELOR The conversation between John Batchelor and colleague Mary Kissel, executive vice president of Stephens Incorporated and former senior advisor at the State Department, focuses on the quiet success of Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. Rubio is highly regarded and is very well liked across the aisle for several reasons. During his distinguished career in the Senate, he was viewed as a reasonable person who was very grounded and possessed clear principles, but who was still able to cooperate with Democrats to find common ground. In the current administration, he is seen as relatively more of a realist and a foreign policy hawk than others in powerful roles. Kissel highlights that Rubio has comported himself successfully at the State Department, establishing a stable and extremely careful administration. Notably, the administration has not seen the typical leaks of memos or complaints that the State Department bureaucracy often uses to undermine the executive floor (the seventh floor at Foggy Bottom). A specific success highlighted is the recovery of one of the hostages held by the Kabul government, the Taliban. The success of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs (SPEHA), who reports up to Rubio and the President, is emphasized, as protecting U.S. citizenry is considered the greatest role for the government. Finally, the President has shown significant confidence in Rubio by naming him National Security Advisorconcurrently with his role as Secretary of State.

Following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a wave of everyday people have been punished, getting doxxed and even losing their jobs because of statements they made online regarding Kirk and his death. Even the Vice President of the United States, JD Vance, encouraged Americans to call the employers of anyone they feel is “celebrating Charlie's murder.” Free speech matters now, more than ever. But what can we say without fear of retribution? To find out what the rules around speech in America really are, and why this is no time to self-censor, we spoke to Ari Cohn.
