Can the Body Heal Itself? A Pharmacist and Naturopath Talk Pregnancy and Nutrition Dr. Randi Shannon said she was going to blow our minds, and she delivered! In this episode of MaternalRx, pharmacist Danielle Plummer, PharmD, sits down with Dr. Shannon, a traditional naturopath who uses Face, Tongue and Nail Analysis, an approach she describes as rooted in thousands of years of traditional medicine. Their conversation explores pregnancy preparation, nutrition, nausea and vomiting, minerals, essential oils, disease prevention, and Dr. Shannon's belief that the face, tongue, and fingernails can reveal clues about what is happening inside the body. The interview is followed by a commentary where Danielle puts her pharmacist hat on for an evidence-based debrief, examining several of the episode's most surprising claims and asking an essential healthcare question: What happens when an idea sounds biologically plausible, yet the clinical evidence has not been tested? Topics include Type 1 diabetes, Down syndrome, salt intake, peppermint oil in pregnancy, cholesterol, dietary oils, pharmaceuticals, nutrient requirements, and the important distinction between traditional naturopaths and licensed naturopathic doctors. This isn't a conversation about dismissing complementary medicine. It's about listening with curiosity while still asking important questions: What do we know? What don't we know? Where might an approach put a patient or pregnancy at risk, and where might it support the body's ability to heal? Stay through the end to hear Danielle's Takeaway! Section 1: Welcome and disclaimer Meet Dr. Randi Shannon What is a naturopath? Preparing the body for pregnancy Nausea in pregnancy and gut health What can fingernails tell us? Nutrients and claims about preventing or reversing disease What can the tongue reveal? What can the face reveal? Section 2: Evidence-Based Debrief Do we need exactly 60 minerals, 16 vitamins, 12 amino acids and 3 essential fatty acids? Is Type 1 diabetes created during the first trimester? Can Type 1 diabetes develop later in life? Can maternal nutrition reverse Down syndrome in utero? Peanuts, mold, aflatoxins and liver risk Peppermint essential oil during pregnancy Are Americans “undersalted”? Pharmaceuticals, synthetic drugs and side effects Cholesterol, dietary oils and reproductive health Traditional vs. licensed naturopaths Danielle's takeaway About Dr. Randi Shannon Randi Shannon, ND, is a Florida-based traditional naturopath known for her use of Face, Tongue and Nail Analysis. Jim Kwik on Memory, AI, and Why Natural Intelligence Beats Artificial Intelligence Your brain is quietly outsourcing itself to AI, and you won't notice until it's gone. This episode gives you the exact framework to use artificial intelligence as a tool for brain optimization instead of a crutch that erodes your memory, focus, and critical thinking. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Jim Kwik, one of the world's leading experts in memory improvement, brain optimization, and accelerated learning. For more than 30 years, Jim has served as the brain coach to professional athletes, political leaders, business magnates, and Hollywood icons, with corporate clients including Google, Nike, SpaceX, and Harvard. He hosts the Kwik Brain podcast with over 100 million downloads, reaches 200,000 people annually through live keynotes, and just wrapped his 14th annual Beyond Biohacking Conference with 5,000 attendees in Austin. Jim overcame a childhood brain injury that left him labeled "learning disabled," and turned that struggle into a mission he calls "no brain left behind." They break down the MIT study showing that people who use AI to write and think score worse on memory and comprehension than those who rely on their own brains, and why that matters for anyone serious about longevity, human performance, and anti-aging. Jim introduces the concept of digital dementia and cognitive sovereignty, explaining how nootropics, neuroplasticity, and functional medicine can support your biology while AI still requires you to keep your own hardware sharp. They cover the MEDS Rx framework for brain optimization: meditation, exercise, diet, sleep optimization, and relationships, plus why mitochondria, metabolism, and inflammation from processed food directly impact your cognitive output. Jim also shares how his own kids use AI as a tutor rather than a replacement for thinking, and why sleep inertia and the first few minutes after waking set the tone for your entire day. This is essential listening for anyone serious about biohacking, hacking their own brain, longevity, neuroplasticity, brain optimization, supplements, and building a Smarter Not Harder approach to human performance in the age of AI. You'll Learn: Why the MIT study found AI users had weaker memory and comprehension than people who did the work themselves What digital dementia and digital deduction are, and how they quietly erode your cognitive muscles How to use AI as an augmented intelligence partner instead of a replacement for critical thinking The MEDS Rx framework for brain optimization: meditation, exercise, diet, sleep, and relationships Why the first few minutes after waking determine your focus and mood for the entire day How spaced repetition and AI-assisted learning can lock in new skills and behavior change faster The HUMAN framework for staying irreplaceable in a world run by algorithms Thank you to our sponsors! - KILLSwitch | If you're ready for the best sleep of your life, order now at https://www.switchsupplements.com/and use code DAVE for 20% off - Neuronic | Go to www.neuronic.online Code DAVE for $100 off - Our Place | Upgrade your kitchen with Our Place today. Effective athlete support requires more than delivering technically correct nutrition advice. It depends on understanding the athlete's wider environment, anticipating the pressures that disrupt good intentions, and building flexible routines that remain useful across training, competition, travel and everyday life. This episode explores how practitioners can move beyond rigid prescriptions, use "good, better, best" options, measure meaningful progress, and create environments in which athletes can communicate openly about difficulties. It also examines identity, transitions out of sport, and why sustainable support should develop an athlete's autonomy rather than dependence on the practitioner. To discuss all this is Gemma McGuinness, registered performance nutritionist, former professional footballer and co-founder of Verus Performance. Brad Talks Testosterone Testing (And Other Important Blood Tests)

Let’s talk about testosterone testing and other important blood tests you can track for your overall health, wellness, vitality, and longevity. I recorded this show on the occasion of my first visit to the blood lab after signing up for Vitals Vault’s premium program, and I talk about some of my favorite markers while pedaling home from the lab. I focus a lot on testosterone because I believe it’s a great proxy for overall wellness, vitality, recovery, and resilience to stress. I share my own numbers, which have ranged from 562 to 1,004, and explain why I’m so intent on keeping testosterone levels high as I age. I also get into the roughly 1% annual decline in average male testosterone levels since the 1980s, vitamin D and the widespread fear of the sun, why looking beyond LDL can give you a better picture of your lipid panel, and the lifestyle practices that can help optimize testosterone—from sleep and diet to avoiding chronic cardio, lifting heavy things, sprinting once in a while, and even maintaining a winning relationship. TIMESTAMPS: Testosterone testing is the best proxy for your overall state of wellness, vitality, and recovery or resilience to stress. [00:51] Brad checks his testosterone level frequently because it is his way of monitoring the stress impact from his training. [5:41] Triglycerides to HDL ratio is a premier indicator of your heart disease risk factor. It is much better than looking at total LDL cholesterol. [06:42] In 2017 they lowered the ideal level of testosterone due to the widespread decline of testosterone among males around the world. [09:02] If you are not optimizing your sleep, including down and rest time, you cannot reduce your stress. [12:13] Get the junk out of your diet. If you are in that chronic cardio pattern in your exercise, you may be tanking your testosterone. [12:37] If there is arguing and other dysfunctional patterns in your relationship, it will tank your testosterone as well as shorten your lifespan. [13:34] Vitamin D comes from sun exposure more than from your diet or pills. [14:30] LINKS: Brad Kearns.com BradNutrition.com B.rad Whey Protein Superfuel - The Best Protein on The Planet! Welcome to the seventh episode of the Coach's Corner Series! Today I'm joined by Coach Lindsay, and we're getting real about what's actually not working in the functional health space, even when practitioners mean well.  We break down five major red flags to watch for, starting with practitioners who don't address nutrition beyond a generic food list. We talk about why using supplements as a bandaid, without digging into the root cause, just becomes another quick fix that doesn't actually heal anything.  Coach Lindsay shares her own health journey, including how infrequent check ins with her provider left her feeling stuck and unsure of her progress.  We also get into why rigid diet plans can backfire by teaching your body to adapt rather than building real metabolic flexibility. And we can't talk about functional health without talking about training, so we cover why using the right training stimulus matters just as much as nutrition and supplements when it comes to hitting your goals.  If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right but still not seeing results, this episode will help you understand why, and what a more complete approach to healing actually looks like. Lindsay brings so much heart and expertise to this conversation, and I know it's going to help so many of you see your own health journey differently.   Time Stamps:   (1:54) What's Not Working Within Functional Health (4:12) More Advanced Nutrition Concepts (8:09) Gut Health (9:02) Questions To Ask Your Practitioner (10:19) Supplements Are Band Aid Fix (15:37) Frequency of Communication (20:20) Flexibility With The Strategy (27:47) Training As A Stimulus ------- Learn more about the Vital Spark Coaching Functional Reset Method.  ------- Click Here to apply for 1-on-1 coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts. ------- Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation.  ------- Click Here for my Free Top 3 Labs training to get to the root of bloating & exhaustion. ------- Click Here to download a Free Hormone Healing Blueprint. ------- Check out our YouTube Channel for more free training. ------- Click Here to read our Client Google Reviews.  ------- Enjoyed the podcast? Your gymnast needs surgery, and the first fear that shows up for her, for you, maybe for her coaches is that she's going to "get fat" and lose everything she's worked for. Christina is here to tell you that's not the goal, and it's not even the right question. In this episode, Christina walks through nutrition before, during, and after gymnastics surgery, and why this is one of the most overlooked pieces of the recovery process. She opens by dismantling the idea that time off means the body should eat less — surgery actually increases the body's demands, driving up protein turnover, wound healing, immune function, and tissue remodeling, so a calorie deficit is the last thing a healing body needs. She then digs into something most parents never hear from a surgeon's office: chronic underfueling going into surgery compromises the very tissues being operated on, and it's often part of why the injury happened in the first place. Christina shares a client story about intentionally delaying an elbow surgery by two months to get a gymnast out of a chronic deficit first, and explains why she wishes every young athlete got a full nutrition assessment before going under the knife including a look at growth charts, not just a snapshot of height and weight. From there, she covers the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) approach to pre- and post-op fueling, what to actually feed a gymnast in the rough first few days home (think sick-day food: smoothies, eggs, oatmeal, soup), and how bowel function, hydration, and protein timing all play a role in getting back on track. She also breaks down which supplements are worth discussing with a dietitian — collagen, creatine, zinc, magnesium, omega-3s — and which ones are just expensive noise if the underlying diet isn't there yet. Finally, Christina walks through the three phases of return-to-sport nutrition, why a gymnast's pre-surgery nutrition status should change how her return timeline is paced, and why parents need to be especially careful about comments on weight, body changes, or "getting her body back" during recovery. In this episode, we cover:❗ Why surgery is never the time to diet, restrict, or aim for weight loss❗ How chronic underfueling before surgery compromises tissue healing and surgical outcomes❗ What ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) means for pre- and post-op eating❗ Why growth charts matter more than a single height-and-weight snapshot❗ Easy, tolerable foods for the first few rough days after surgery❗ Which supplements (collagen, creatine, zinc, magnesium, omega-3s) actually help — and when they're a waste of money❗ The three nutrition phases of return-to-sport recovery❗ How to support your gymnast's body image without commenting on weight or body changesChristina's takeaway: surgery is not a time to shrink the body it's a time to fuel it. The gymnasts who recover fastest and most safely are the ones whose nutrition was dialed in before they ever hit the operating table, and parents play a huge role in protecting that mindset at home.If your gymnast is facing surgery or an extended time out of the gym, reach out. Nutrition Nugget! Bite-sized bonus episodes offer tips, tricks and approachable science. This week, Jenn is talking about frozen vegetables. With a summer Cyclospora scare putting salad greens on trial, is the humble freezer aisle the safer, smarter choice? Jenn breaks down exactly how frozen veggies are harvested, blanched, and locked in at peak nutrition, and whether that process really does more to protect you than your fresh produce drawer. She also tackles the critics head-on: are frozen vegetables "processed," do they lose flavor and texture, and is fresh really always more nutritious? The catch is in how you cook them, and one wrong move could turn a nutrient-packed shortcut into a mushy, flavorless mistake. Jenn weighs both sides before landing on her verdict about whether frozen vegetables a permanent spot in your healthy eating routine. Like what you're hearing? Supplements and Morning Coffee: Timing Iron, Zinc, Calcium, B Vitamins, and Vitamin D: Nutritionist Leyla Muedin explains that coffee (and tea) can interfere with nutrient absorption and digestion, so certain supplements shouldn't be taken with morning coffee. Coffee's tannins and polyphenols can significantly reduce non-heme iron absorption (decaf doesn't prevent this), and similar binding issues may affect zinc; she recommends taking iron with water at least 1–2 hours away from coffee and pairing it with vitamin C. Because caffeine may increase urination, B vitamins (especially thiamine) may be lost more readily, so she suggests taking them with food but not with coffee. Vitamin D is best taken with a fat-containing meal (not washed down with coffee), and calcium supplements should be separated from coffee since caffeine can slightly increase calcium loss. She also notes interactions such as green tea reducing folate absorption, spinach oxalates limiting mineral absorption, phytates in bran/legumes reducing iron and zinc absorption, and calcium (milk or supplements) cutting iron absorption, emphasizing timing rather than eliminating these foods.

Quantum Scientist Patrick Coles Reveals How Tumors Protect Your Mitochondria From Toxic Overload Cancer might not be the enemy your doctor says it is. What if tumors are actually your body's emergency detox system, built on purpose to protect you from something far more dangerous? Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Patrick Coles, Ph.D., Chief Scientist at Normal Computing, where he develops novel computing hardware for AI applications. Previously a Staff Scientist at Los Alamos National Lab, Coles led their near-term quantum computing group and made significant contributions to quantum computing theory. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from UC Berkeley and a Master of Philosophy in Biochemistry from Cambridge, and he's currently developing a new theory for cancer and chronic disease, the subject of this conversation. His rare combination of hard physics and deep biochemistry gives him a radically different lens on one of medicine's most misunderstood diseases. Coles lays out his Toxin Sequestration Theory, a framework that reframes cancer tumors not as malignant accidents but as intentional storage vaults the body builds to sequester toxins, heavy metals, seed oils, mold, and excess glucose, away from healthy tissue and mitochondria. He and Dave connect the dots between this theory and chronic disease, biohacking fundamentals, and why chemotherapy itself behaves as a toxin that can backfire. They dig into oxalates, deuterium, linoleic acid, circadian biology, and the detox protocols that support the body's natural ability to shrink these toxic reservoirs. This conversation challenges the mainstream genetic theory of cancer, explores the metabolic theory popularized by Thomas Seyfried, and lands on a radical, functional medicine-aligned framework for anyone serious about longevity, anti-aging, and human performance. Dave and Coles also break down how sleep optimization, fasting, ketosis, and a carnivore approach to nutrition support the body's detox hierarchy, from fat tissue and the liver to moles, cysts, and eventually tumors themselves. This is essential listening for anyone serious about biohacking, functional medicine, mitochondria health, brain optimization, nootropics, and taking full control of their metabolism and longevity. You'll Learn: Why toxins may be the root cause of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, autism, and most chronic disease How Toxin Sequestration Theory reinterprets tumors as the body's backup detox organs Why chemotherapy ranks among the most tissue-damaging toxins, and what happens when a tumor bursts The role of oxalates, deuterium, heavy metals, and seed oils in cancer cell hoarding Why moles, cysts, lipomas, and nodules may be minor versions of the same detox response How circadian rhythm, sleep, and light exposure affect the body's toxin excretion cycles What spontaneous tumor regression reveals about lowering your toxic burden Why tracking tumor progression matters no matter which treatment path you choose Thank you to our sponsors! - Download Dave's Free Peptide Guide at daveasprey.com/peptide-guide. - ZenBud | Dave's Nervous System Biohack. Mikael and Jack Hutchens each bring up four things they do in their coaching practice that the research does not support, or does not support in the form they use it. What the evidence says, what they do instead, and the reasoning they would defend it with. HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: Tapering: Mikael prescribes 7 to 10 day tapers where the literature converges on two to three weeks, with a smaller volume cut than the meta-analyses land on. Why he thinks the study populations do not transfer. Torque training: Jack keeps low cadence work in every program despite a review finding no strong evidence it improves performance. His specificity case, and Mikael's rationale from the cadence drop late in an Ironman bike. Electrolytes: why Mikael prescribes them liberally while accepting the evidence is thin, the one athlete variable no study has controlled for, and the profile that really does not need them. Grey zone intervals: polarised training wins the short intervention studies, so why does Jack lean on the zone in between? The time horizon argument, and Mikael's three week VO2max block that stopped working after two. Heat training: ten sessions over two weeks for acclimation, five weeks of five for haemoglobin mass, against Mikael's minimal effective dose. Jack's pushback: does half a protocol buy half the adaptation? Strength training: where it sits in Jack's list of levers when time is fixed, who he does prioritise it for, and Mikael's rules on frequency, session length and the weekly hours threshold to bother at all. Sprint interval training: the protocol with a decent evidence base that Mikael almost never prescribes, what goes in that slot instead, and the cycling study published five days before recording that he never expected to see. Psychology: why Jack spends more coaching time on self-talk, goal setting and confidence than the evidence warrants, and Mikael's theory for why it looks so weak in group studies.
