We welcome back Christian Felix aka Mr. Cardigan to the show. Shonali & Christian discuss their preparations for the holiday season and seeing friends vs family over the holidays. Our first guest (00:08:45) is comedian & filmmaker Kenice Mobley. Kenice is from North Carolina and came to NYC via Los Angeles and Boston MA. Kenice has only been in NYC for the past 2 1/2 years and she has already made a big impact on the NYC comedy scene. Kenice tells us about a time when she received a "high volume" of Richard pics from men. Find out how she dealt with them. Kenice has a podcast called Love About Town w co-host Rohan Padhye discussing love, sex & relationships. Christian and Shonali lobby to be on her show. Our second guest (00:26:50) is actress Angelline Chung who also happens to be a Julliard graduate thanks to her parents in Singapore. Angelline hails from Singapore and was on a television show there called Shall We Talk? Her dream role is one which would deal with issues of mental health. Angelline discusses how although Hollywood is doing it's best, it still needs to do more regarding inclusivity and white washing Asian culture. Angelline educates us as to exactly what "yellow fever" is. She explains how this mindset and behavior is detrimental to everyone involved especially Asian women. We #GetItOffYour Chest (00:59:03) with former Ep. 21 WDEK guest, Pete Miser. Christian and Pete have a heated conversation regarding chicken vs turkey for Thanksgiving. Shonali is the Judge Judy of this debate. Also don't loudly restate your partner's name over and over in a condescending way on a flight so that the entire flight feels bad for your partner. Our final guest (00:59:03) is cinematographer, filmmaker and photographer Hope Hall. She is currently Senior Road Videographer for Senator Elizabeth Warren 2020 Campaign. She was President Obama's Principal Videographer in the White House. Hope is one of the most positive people we have had on the show. Yes, her name is fitting. We ask Hope what makes working for Senator Warren so special. We discuss Hope's unusual career transition into filmmaking and photography. We share (1:35:21) some of Hope's helpful tips on mindfulness and getting through the tough times. We are lobbying her to have a weekend seminar on these tips so we can all be as powerful a force as she is. Another year winds down for We Don't Even Know. We wish you the peace and joy during this holiday season and we will be back next year, for our live taping on January 28, 2020. Love, Shonali & Christian

When you live in the rural South, your story rarely makes the news, but Southern activists are shaking things up, with their votes, and their broadband transmitter too. This week, Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson and Rev. Allyn Maxfield-Steele, the co-directors of the revered civil rights school, the Highlander Center, talk about blue waves, black women and broadband. And we revisit Detroit, where residents denied affordable internet meshed servers to serve their neighbors, one rooftop at a time. “As the World Ends” by TQX featuring Gian Slater and Pete Miser from the album Global Intimacy released on Extra Celestial Arts. Happy New Year to all our WDEK listeners. Things are off to a good start in the WDEK studios with Christian and Shonali both getting sick over the holidays. We are having a snow storm right now. Christian talks about story hijackers and Justin lends us his thoughts. Parents think they are better drivers than their kids and that's a fact. Shonali's mom sends Christian a special FB message. Subway sightings include a dancer at Union Square platform and a man with a carryon and a tennis racquet. Our special guest is Pete Miser, the legendary front man of Five Fingers of Funk from Portland, OR and a rapper who has released 4 full length albums of his own, while helming the board at his own Ho House studios in Tribeca. He's worked closely with Dido and Imani Coppola and is always making new music. Pete comes bearing gifts. This one is especially for Christian and his former thigh chafing issues (as heard on Ep. 4). Pete was a B-boy who started to rap at age 16. He will fill you in on what's happening in hip hop today, and what's not. Did you see the Indian dancing boy star on India's Got TAlent? Are musicians sellouts for putting their music in commercials? Shonali is reading the Miles Davis Autobiography. Sounds are a singular experience. You can hear them by just reading about them. Pete makes his world debut of Hands Up 3.3 on We Don't Even Know! Put your HANDS UP!!!!!
CD, Cry Love | 07 Aug 2012What's Your Sign? I Have Your Number! If you have not heard the ever-delicious and delightfully soulful sounds of Singer Maya Azucena yet, this was an hour you will definitely want to listen back to!Sharita was absolutely honored to have Maya join her for this show that explored from above, just why Maya is here in this incarnation bringing healing, light and joy to the entire globe through her innovative and spirit-stirring music down here below. The planets above indeed do declare she is an original and stellar Star that you will continue to watch shine like the sun with an everlasting love upon this EARTH; for everything beyond her music equally and truly comes from Maya's HEART.As we discussed Maya's birth name through it's name expression and Lexigrams -the poetic phrasing of the anagrams that can be derived from within it- we find one more validation of how a person's story in life is also all within a name.MAYA AZUCENA NEWTON MY MY MY, MAYA A WOMAN TO EMANATE ONE UNCANNY WAY TO ANNOUNCE AN AMAZE MAYA MEANT TO OWN MANY TUNE, NOTE & TONEMAYA MEANT TO OWN MANY AMOUNT O’ TON O’ MONEY NOTE & TONE. Whether performing before an audience of thousands or writing in solitude, she transcends genres and trends. Her progressive yet accessible style is shaped by an expansive vision that unites genres. With Maya Azucena, the worlds of hip hop, soul, jazz, reggae, electronica and pop join forces. Like Lauryn Hill, Corinne Bailey Rae, or Gnarls Barkley, she embodies a singular and finely honed artistry through a combination of profound lyrics, soaring melodies, and irresistible rhythms.Cry Love is the artistic statement that Maya Azucena has sought to make since day one. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter’s impressive versatility unfolds over ten original compositions plus a dramatic interpretation of “Little Ghetto Boy.” Executive-produced with her longtime collaborator Christian Ver Halen, and released on her new imprint label, Azucena Songs, Cry Love represents a powerful journey that distills the universal themes of love, survival, and hope into 50 unforgettable minutes.Maya Azucena emerged as a captivating presence on the landscape of popular music following her self-released debut Maya Who?! and the critically acclaimed Junkyard Jewel. Billboard, The Village Voice and The Washington Post have all heralded her mesmerizing performances in the U.S. while her music’s been featured on HBO (The Wire), NBC (30 Rock), and in advertisements for Verizon Wireless and Ford Motors. Her work with Stephen Marley netted a “Best Reggae Album” Grammy and her vocal contributions to an album by Croatian superstar Gibonni garnered two Porin Awards (the top music award in Croatia). As both an in-demand concert attraction and a Cultural Ambassador for the U.S., she’s enthralled audiences in places as far-ranging as Honduras, China, Tanzania, Italy, Myanmar, and Slovenia. It is for those listeners and countless more that Maya Azucena has crafted Cry Love. An anthem for justice, the title track, produced by Pete Miser, is steeped in Maya’s concern for humankind and constitutes the album’s core concept. Her desire to inspire, empower, and embolden listeners saturates both the edgy groove of “Warriors” and the sanguine sway of “Near,” as well as her gripping duet with distinguished singer/pianist Chris Robon the Donny Hathaway classic, “Little Ghetto Boy.” Taking a page from Maya’s own life, “The Half” is a harrowing tale propelled by no less a rock legend than guitarist Vernon Reid. Emerging triumphant from near tragedy, she invites dancehall icon iNi Kamoze aboard for a victory lap on “My Back’s Not Up Against the Wall” while the glistening, acoustic qualities of “Belong to the Sun” furnish another standout cut. The songs are all unified by a remarkable depth and stunning musicality. ®2012[Click Here to Listen]
