Exploding Kittens began as a jerry-rigged version of Russian Roulette — a deck of cards hastily modified with a Sharpie. But what happened next is one of the most improbable success stories in the creator economy: a $10,000 Kickstarter goal that ballooned into nearly $9 million, a community that rewrote the rules of crowdfunding, and a company that has now sold over 60 million card and board games.Co-founder Elan Lee shares the story behind Exploding Kittens — from dismantling his brother's toys as a kid, to helping design Halo, to walking away from Microsoft…twice. He reveals how burnout, curiosity, and an obsession with interactive storytelling set the stage for one of the most successful game launches of all time. This is a story about the genius behind good marketing, and how creative storytelling can build a cult-like audience — without spending millions. If you've ever wondered how a strange idea becomes a global phenomenon — this is that story.WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: How burnout can be a creative turning pointHow a Sharpie and a deck of cards can unlock breakthrough ideasThe storytelling strategy that powered one of Kickstarter's biggest launchesHow to treat your fans like collaborators, not just customersWhy marketing should feel like playUnit economics to die for: make it for $2, sell it for $20How to power through the threat of a one-hit-wonderTIMESTAMPS:00:08:30 — The physics teacher who changed Elan's life00:10:35 — How Elan touched up the floating door scene in Titanic00:13:03 — “You're the worst program manager I've ever seen” — and the pivot to game design00:15:33 — Meeting Spielberg, riffing on the movie AI, and inventing a new kind of storytelling00:21:42 — Promoting Halo 2 with payphones 00:31:35 — The Hawaii getaway that sparked Exploding Kittens00:42:12 — The Kickstarter launch: most backers on record00:48:42 — Suddenly a real company — 700,000 decks and a manufacturing crisis00:53:45 — Marketing genius: a kitty-cat vending machine that dispensed burritos and more01:00:58 — New games that bombed — the one-hit-wonder dread01:07:04 — Throw Throw Burrito, and the road to stability01:19:05 — Elan's 4-year-old daughter helps design new games01:30:31 — Small Business SpotlightHey—want to be a guest on HIBT?If you're building a business, why not get advice from some of the greatest entrepreneurs on Earth?Every Thursday on the HIBT Advice Line, a previous HIBT guest helps new entrepreneurs work through the challenges they're facing right now. What if the future of marketing is a lot more human than we think? Today's guest, Mark Schaefer, has been shaping that future for decades — and he was actually on this show ten years ago. So this is part reunion, part masterclass. Mark's a futurist, bestselling author, Rutgers faculty member, and Drucker-trained strategist whose ideas guide brands from Adidas to the U.S. Air Force. His ten books and his top-ranked show The Marketing Companion have become industry staples. He's also a longtime friend who somehow manages to push your thinking and make you laugh at the same time. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why the future of marketing belongs to the most human companies, not the most automated ones How AI can scale trust, creativity, and teaching without killing the brand When removing friction actually damages customer relationships Why curiosity is becoming the most important career skill in the AI era How marketers must act as brand defenders when technology pushes too far Episode Chapters (00:00) Reunion and why this moment matters (02:00) Why this is the most amazing — and unsettling — time in marketing (04:20) Scaling humanity with AI and the MarkBot experiment (07:30) The most human company wins (and what that really means) (10:40) When AI goes too far and brands lose trust (12:30) Harley-Davidson, friction, and knowing your customer deeply (17:00) Curiosity as a career strategy in an AI world (27:00) The brand that made Mark smile About Mark Schaefer Mark Schaefer is a globally recognized futurist, keynote speaker, educator, and bestselling author. With more than 30 years of experience in marketing, PR, and global sales, he has advised organizations ranging from startups to Adidas and the U.S. Air Force. Mark studied under Peter Drucker, teaches in Rutgers University's graduate program, and holds seven patents. He is the author of ten influential books used at universities worldwide and the host of the top-ranked podcast, The Marketing Companion. Known for blending sharp insight with humanity and humor, Mark's work helps leaders navigate what's next without losing what matters. What Brand Has Made Mark Smile Recently? Mark couldn't stop smiling about Nutter Butter — a once-forgotten cookie brand that decided to go full weird. By embracing surreal, chaotic, almost inexplicable short-form videos, the brand ditched boring category conventions and leaned into creativity with nothing to lose. The result? Tripled sales and a case study in what happens when brands stop playing it safe and start being interesting. Resources & Links Connect with Mark on LinkedIn. Check out his website, BusinessesGrow. Cut Through the Noise: Finding Clarity in Your Marketing | Orly Zeewy | 1180

Ever feel like your marketing message is shouting into a crowded room? Every day, your customers are bombarded by thousands of messages—from family, friends, and brands all vying for their attention. So how do you make yours stand out? I chatted with Orly Zeewy, a speaker, educator, and facilitator of those “aha” light bulb moments, about one of my favorite topics: clarity. Orly helps entrepreneurs turn fuzzy ideas into sharp, memorable messages that connect and convert. As she put it, “What's clear for you is not necessarily what's clear for the person you're speaking to.” And that's the heart of the problem—most of us start by explaining what we do, when we should be showing people why it matters to them. We explored how clarity isn't just a nice-to-have. It's what helps people remember you long after they scroll past. And, Orley reminded me, true clarity starts with understanding who your message is for and what they actually need. Here are a few takeaways from our conversation: Start with your audience. Everyone says they market to “anyone,” but that's a fast track to blending in. Get clear about who really needs what you offer. Fix your elevator pitch. Stop saying what you do and start saying what problem you solve. “I design websites” doesn't stick—but “I turn fuzzy content into clear messages that cut through the noise” sure does. Own your superpower. Women especially tend to undervalue what comes naturally to them. Just because it feels easy doesn't mean it isn't valuable. Avoid being a hammer looking for a nail. When you don't define your audience, you end up marketing to everyone—and connecting with no one. If you've ever felt like your message gets lost in the noise, this episode will help you find your voice, sharpen your story, and finally get your marketing to click.  Because let's face it—when you make the fuzzy clear, everything else just falls into place. About Orly Orly Zeewy is an author, speaker, educator, and a facilitator of lightbulb moments. Her superpower? She makes fuzzy clear. She helps entrepreneurs clarify and communicate their zone of genius, so they can attract more of their ideal clients and go from invisible to memorable in 3 weeks. She has lectured at Wharton and taught in The Close School of Entrepreneurship at Drexel University, and the University of Pennsylvania. Her book: Ready, Launch, Brand: The Lean Marketing Guide for Startups was published in 2021 and was endorsed by Seth Godin. Her new book: Why NOT Me? The Female Guide for Entrepreneurship will be published in Q1 2026. In this special holiday episode of Rhee Gold’s DanceLife Podcast, Rhee Gold and Stacey Morgan slow things down to reflect on the year that was — and the memories that truly matter. From unforgettable career highlights (including tap dancing with Hugh Jackman!) to meaningful moments at events like Dancers Against Cancer, Rhee and Stacey share what stood out most over the past 12 months and why taking time to reflect is just as important as moving forward. The conversation weaves through holiday traditions, travel plans, family time, and the realities of being a dance studio owner who is always “on.” Stacey opens up about why the beach is her place to reset and simply be herself, while Rhee shares his love of long drives, country music, and heading home for Christmas — plus a few confessions about snooping for presents as a kid. They also talk downtime (or the lack of it), background noise vs. music, Netflix habits, and yes… Ted Lasso makes another appearance. Most importantly, this episode is a reminder to pause, breathe, and truly enjoy the journey — especially during the holidays. It’s about creating lifetime memories, embracing fresh starts, and giving yourself permission to rest before the new year begins. ✨ Whether you’re a dance teacher, studio owner, or simply someone who needs permission to slow down, this episode is your invitation to reflect, reset, and move into the new year with gratitude and intention.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How to Write Catchy Titles, Descriptions, and High-Impact Headlines for your websites, email marketing, social media marketing, Pinterest SEO, and more with Favour Obasi-Ike | Sign up for exclusive SEO insights.Episode Summary:In this comprehensive episode + guide on crafting effective digital headlines, titles, and descriptions to boost online engagement. The speaker emphasizes that metadata acts as the essential context for content, serving as the primary factor that drives click-through rates across platforms like Google, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Strategic advice includes maintaining a title length of approximately 55 to 65 characters to avoid text truncation while maximizing visual impact. I also recommend using odd numbers, brackets, and power words to leverage psychological triggers that improve visibility and user trust. Finally, the discussion frames intentional copywriting as a vital tool for business owners to transform passive web traffic into active conversions and long-term brand authority. In high-level digital strategy, titles, descriptions, and headlines are not merely decorative—they serve as the essential "key frames" of metadata. This content architecture bridges the gap between raw information and audience discovery by providing the necessary context (Author, Host, Duration, and Intent) that search algorithms require to categorize an asset. By transforming raw content into searchable, high-value assets, a strategist ensures that the brand is prioritized within the user's search journey.Favour emphasizes that structured delivery and architectural integrity correlate directly to business results. If a title fails to establish immediate relevance, the conversion path is broken before it begins. Success in the current landscape requires a commitment to iterative improvement—ensuring the "next version" of a title or metadata set is systematically optimized based on data rather than intuition. This log details the tactical framework used by Favour, currently ranked #2 (We Don't PLAY!) on the FeedSpot Top 100 Marketing Podcasts (trailing only Gary Vaynerchuk), to drive visibility across SEO, PPC, and email ecosystems.Deep Dive: The Quantitative Science of Click-Through Rates (CTR)To maximize ROI, content creators must move beyond "gut feeling" and toward research-backed optimization. Using industry benchmarks from Orbit Media and Moz, we can calibrate headlines to meet the psychological triggers that drive user action.-------------------------------------------------------------------------Next Steps for Digital Marketing + SEO Services:>> Need SEO Services? The following log segments the Masterclass into thematic chapters, providing the "So What?" factor for each strategic shift.Chapters:Chapter 1: The Metadata Framework [00:00 - 10:00] Context vs. Content. This segment establishes that metadata is the "context" (attributes like host and duration) that allows users to value an asset before engaging. Without these key frames, even high-quality content remains invisible to search engines and the "Exact Searcher Intent."Chapter 2: The Utility of Catchy Copy [10:00 - 18:00] Visibility Across the Funnel. Effective copy acts as the primary catalyst for Click-Through Rates (CTR) across SEO, LinkedIn, and Email. The speaker frames catchy titles as functional tools that pre-condition the audience for engagement and conversion.Chapter 3: The Physics of the Pixel [18:00 - 25:00] Typography Weight. Moving beyond character counts, this chapter introduces the 600-pixel display limit. Strategists must account for the "weight" of individual characters (e.g., a capital "W" vs. a lowercase "l") to prevent truncation and maintain a professional aesthetic on the SERP (Search Engine Results Page).Chapter 4: The Psychology of Numbers [25:00 - 35:00] Time-Value Perception. This section evaluates how numbers (specifically odd numbers) impact user psychology. The "So What?" factor is the "minute-per-item" rule: users subconsciously equate the number of items in a title to the minutes they must invest (e.g., 10 ways = 10 minutes), directly influencing the decision to click.Chapter 5: Platform Evolution [35:00 - 45:00] Ecosystem Logic. The speaker analyzes Instagram's transition to "TV-style" content and LinkedIn's rigid SEO URL logic. The key takeaway is the importance of "Exact Title Match" to meet user intent while navigating platform-specific constraints like DM automation and hashtag limits.Chapter 6: The Podcasting Marathon [45:00 - End] The Milestone Logic. Highlighting the "eighth-episode hurdle" where 500,000 creators quit annually, the speaker discusses his 600-episode milestone and the necessity of IAB Tech Lab compliance. Long-term distribution success is a result of persistence and technical "due diligence."High-Value Quotes"Metadata... that's just another way of saying how do we get context out of this content. Those are attributes... that's the context to the content." - Favour Obasi-ike"A capital W has more weight than a small w. A capital L has more weight than a small l... that weight they carry is a pixel size digitally.""If somebody clicks and finds your content valuable, resourceful, accurate, and responsive, then anything that you're going to do from SEO to PPC ads... you're able to use consistently."Resources:Companies Passing Tech Lab Compliance Programs | Podcast Compliance DirectoriesHeadline Analyzer Tool: Write Better Headlines | Write Better Headlines HereSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Most companies don't have a marketing problem. They have a trust problem.Specifically, a trust breakdown between the CEO and the CMO.In this episode of Think Millions, I unpack why CEOs don't trust marketing leaders, why CMOs feel set up to fail, and why both sides are actually right. Modern buying behavior has changed, but the mental models and measurement systems evaluating marketing have not.Buying is nonlinear.Decisions happen privately.Influence happens long before attribution ever shows up.Yet marketing is still judged at the end of the funnel. This episode breaks down the real reason trust erodes, why marketing feels invisible even when it is working, and how leadership teams can fix the disconnect without forcing marketing into outdated boxes. No hype. No theory. Just what actually happens inside real companies trying to scale.Key parts of the conversation:0:16 – Why CEOs don't trust CMOs and why CMOs feel set up to fail 0:54 – The stat that should make every CMO uncomfortable 1:14 – Why trust controls budgets, hiring, and risk 1:29 – One third of Fortune 500 companies eliminating the CMO role 2:01 – Why CEOs and CMOs are both right 2:12 – The outdated system quietly killing trust 2:36 – Rising expectations, shrinking budgets, impossible timelines 2:58 – Brand and trust compound quietly but are evaluated loudly 3:06 – Why modern buying no longer happens in a straight line 3:20 – Marketing influencing outcomes before it can be measured 3:34 – The burnout and trust fracture inside marketing teams 3:41 – Most marketing arguments are actually about fear 3:51 – Why uncertainty makes leaders pull back 4:13 – Marketing used to feel simpler, even with less data 4:25 – Marketing shapes preference before pipeline 4:30 – CEOs are asking the wrong question, not an unreasonable one 4:36 – Marketing is no longer transactional; it is directionalGreat quotes from the podcast:• “Most companies don't have a marketing problem. They have a trust problem.”• “80% of CEOs do not trust their CMOs. That should scare you.”• “Trust is the foundation of every decision a company makes.”• “When trust exists, leaders invest forward. When it breaks, leaders pull back.”• “The CEO isn't wrong. The CMO isn't wrong. The system is outdated.”• “Marketing is being evaluated on outcomes that no longer happen in a straight line.”• “Marketing is influencing outcomes before it can be measured.”• “Marketing is doing two jobs at once shaping perception early and justifying results late.”• “Most marketing arguments aren't about marketing. They're about fear.”• “Marketing is no longer transactional. It's directional.”• “Strong marketing starts to look invisible when measurement lives too late.”ResourcesAll Episodes: Think Millions PodcastQuestions or Comments: support@thynkconsultinggroup.comAlexa's Instagram: @dralexadagostinoAlexa's Website: AlexaD'Agostino.comBook a Discovery Call with Alexa: Discovery CallThynkFuel Agency: ThynkFuelMedia.com

AI hype. AI personalization crosses the line when customers can't understand why they're receiving specific treatments. Kathryn Rathje, Partner at McKinsey, explains how marketers often expose too much data instead of focusing on relevance. She discusses the value exchange principle for ethical personalization and why context matters more than data volume. The conversation covers dynamic billboard targeting, spectrum-based personalization approaches, and avoiding the "mad libs of data" trap that makes AI-driven outreach feel invasive rather than helpful.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Recorded live in Boston, Bart sits down with Milt Herbert, Executive Director of the Boston Convention & Marketing Center, for a masterclass in leadership, discipline, and humanity. Milt shares his unconventional journey — from flunking out of college, to serving in combat, to becoming a professor, technologist, entrepreneur, and ultimately a long-tenured executive leader. With humility and clarity, Milt explains how military discipline reshaped his life, why treating people like people is the foundation of leadership, and how focusing on customers as humans — not transactions — creates lasting success. This conversation is packed with wisdom on work ethic, family, learning, customer experience, and what most leaders still get wrong.Major Takeaways / LearningsDiscipline can change everything. Milt credits military service with reshaping his mindset, work ethic, and focus.Early failure doesn't define your ceiling. Flunking out of college didn't stop him from earning an MBA, teaching, and entering a PhD program.Leadership is about people, not roles. Employees have full lives outside work — great leaders respect and support that reality.Integration beats balance. Milt prioritized family, coaching his kids' teams and staying present while building a demanding career.Be a lifelong learner. From coding to tennis to leadership, curiosity and self‑teaching fueled every chapter of his life.Customers are humans first. The best way to serve customers is to understand their goals, pressures, and definitions of success.Listening is a leadership superpower. Ask questions, stay quiet, and truly hear people — that's how trust is built.Strong teams feel like family. When people feel cared for, respected, and seen, they stay — and they perform.Memorable Quotes“People don't show up for work — work isn't their whole life.”“You keep your mouth shut, you listen, and you ask questions.”“Customers have jobs to do — our job is to help them succeed.”“It's always about the people. It's never just about the business.”“I'm only one person — it's the team that makes everything happen.”“Family first isn't a slogan. It's a responsibility.”Why It Matters / How to Use ItThis episode is a blueprint for leaders who want to build trust, loyalty, and performance without sacrificing humanity. Milt Herbert's story proves that discipline, empathy, and curiosity can coexist — and that the strongest organizations are built by leaders who listen, care, and understand people beyond their titles. Whether you lead a team, serve customers, raise a family, or are still finding your path, this conversation offers timeless lessons on how to show up, how to lead, and why people first is not optional — it's essential.

Big changes may be coming to the stock market—and most investors aren't ready for them.Nasdaq is exploring 23–24 hour trading, five days a week, potentially launching as early as the second half of 2026. On the surface, nonstop markets sound convenient. In reality, they could fundamentally change how volatility, liquidity, and investor behavior work.In this episode, Gabriel Shahin, CFP®, breaks down what extended trading hours really mean for your portfolio—and why this shift could benefit institutions far more than everyday investors. What you'll learn: • What 23–24 hour Nasdaq trading would actually look like • Why global participation and faster reactions to news are seen as positives • How after-hours liquidity and wide bid/ask spreads can hurt execution prices • Why higher volatility disproportionately impacts retail investors • The risk of impulse trading and “always-on” market behavior • How earnings reactions, overnight news, and geopolitical events could amplify swings • Operational challenges for brokerages, custodians, and mutual funds • Why institutions may gain an even bigger advantage over individual tradersMore trading hours don't automatically mean better outcomes. Liquidity, discipline, and execution matter far more than access—and nonstop markets could increase costs, volatility, and emotional decision-making for retail investors. This change isn't happening tomorrow, but it is coming. Understanding the risks now is critical to protecting your long-term strategy as markets evolve.
