Are you constantly chasing perfection, or are you truly celebrating progress? In this insightful episode of the Leadership Sandbox podcast, Tammy J. Bond challenges leaders to shift their focus from the dreaded "gap" of what hasn't been accomplished to the powerful "gain" of what has. Tammy passionately advocates for a gain-driven mindset, urging leaders to move beyond self-sabotage by acknowledging every step forward, learning from failures, and fostering a truly positive team environment. Discover how conducting a "gain audit" can transform your perspective, enhance motivation, and significantly boost team performance. This conversation highlights the profound impact of measuring progress on team dynamics and underscores why leadership is about owning your journey – celebrating every piece of traction, not just the final win. Stop punishing yourself with unmet goals and start cultivating a culture of acknowledgment and growth! Key Takeaways for Leaders: Progress Over Perfection: Shift your focus from measuring what you haven't accomplished (the "gap") to celebrating what you have achieved (the "gain"). The "Gap" Treadmill: Understand that "living in the gap" is counterproductive, leading to self-sabotage and hindering motivation. Perspective is Power: Recognize that true progress is found in perspective, not the unattainable pursuit of perfection. Celebrate Traction: Learn to celebrate every piece of traction and small win, not just major successes, to build continuous momentum. Conduct a Gain Audit: Implement a gain audit with your team to intentionally review accomplishments and foster a positive, appreciative environment. Lead by Example: Be aware that your team watches how you measure success – model a gain-driven mindset. Learn from Failures: Embrace acknowledging failures as valuable learning opportunities, rather than reasons for self-punishment. Shift Negative Mindsets: Actively work to shift negative mindsets within yourself and your team towards recognizing opportunities and strengths. Own Your Journey: Embrace the reality that leadership is about owning your journey, acknowledging every step of growth and learning. In This Episode, You'll Learn: How to apply a gain-driven mindset to enhance motivation and combat self-sabotage. Practical steps for conducting a gain audit with your team to improve team performance and morale. The critical role of perspective and emotional intelligence in effective goal setting and leadership. Why celebrating progress, even small achievements, impacts team dynamics and overall organizational health. Strategies to move from a focus on shortcomings to one of strength and growth. Chapters: 00:00 Measuring Progress vs. Self-Punishment: Tammy introduces the core concept of shifting from self-criticism to celebrating progress. 05:11 Conducting a Gain Audit: Practical guidance on how to implement a gain audit with your team for tangible results. What happens when you put a university president who's weathered pandemics, launched massive campaigns, and chairs the Bruce Springsteen Archives in a room with great questions? Pure gold. In this episode, I sit down with Patrick Leahy, President of Monmouth University, for one of those conversations that reminds you why leadership stories matter.Patrick takes us through his incredible journey from being the youngest of six kids outside Baltimore to running a $200 million university. We dive into the mentor who changed everything by pushing him to apply to Georgetown (spoiler: he thought he'd never get in), the poetry class with the university president that shifted his entire career path, and those messy years when he tried business and finance before finding his true calling in higher education. But here's where it gets really interesting. Patrick shares what it was actually like stepping into the president's role just months before the pandemic hit, how he kept an entire campus community connected through weekly Zoom calls that people still don't want him to stop and the bold moves he's made to position Monmouth for the future. We're talking about partnerships with Hackensack Meridian for healthcare programs, building out film and TV production right as Netflix constructs their massive studio two miles away, and chairing the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music. The conversation gets into the real stuff too. How AI is going to reshape education, why being someone others want to work with might be the most critical skill you can develop, and what it means to lead through uncertainty while staying true to your values. Patrick's energy is infectious when he discusses servant leadership, the importance of asking better questions, and how every twist in your career path ultimately serves you later.Patrick's story reminds us that the most successful leaders aren't those who follow predetermined paths, but those who remain open to possibility and aren't afraid to bet on themselves and others. It's a conversation that will leave you thinking differently about what's possible when you combine authentic leadership with strategic vision and the courage to act on both.00:00 – Welcome & Introduction 01:00 – Childhood & Early Leadership 05:45 – The Georgetown Pivot 10:30 – From Business to English Lit 14:00 – The Nonlinear Journey to Education 20:45 – First Presidency at Wilkes 26:30 – Leading Through a Pandemic 32:00 – Vision for Monmouth 37:00 – Netflix, Sports & Strategic Growth 41:30 – The Role of AI in Higher Ed 48:30 – Emotional Intelligence & Employability 50:00 – The Springsteen Archives 55:00 – Closing ReflectionsPatrick on Socials: IG: monmouthuniversity X: @PatrickFLeahy LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-patrick-f-leahy-ab873620 Youtube: @monmouthuniversity⁩Jon on Socials: IG: @thejonschultzpodcast X: @JonSchultzPod LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-jon-schultz-podcast www.jonschultz.com

Hey friend ,in this episode I'm breaking down the three biggest pain points I see over and over again when it comes to raising the money you need to fund your mission. Whether you're a nonprofit CEO, ED, or development leader, these are the places where we often get stuck... but we don't have to stay stuck. Here's what we're diving into:Strategy That Actually Fits YouIt's not enough to copy what worked for another organization. I walk through how to develop a fundraising strategy that's aligned with your culture, your team, your values, and your capacity -not just what looks good on paper. Spoiler: if your org deeply values sustainability, don't expect an events-heavy model to work.Courage is the Difference MakerNo one talks about how much courage it takes to raise major gifts. To face rejection. To say no to donors who want to dictate your mission. To speak up when something's not working. Courage is the backbone of effective fundraising, and I'm sharing real stories -including my own failures - to help you build that muscle.Emotional Intelligence is Your Fundraising SuperpowerI used to say “relationships” were the third key, but I'm refining that: it's actually emotional intelligence (EQ). I break down the four components of EQ and why it's the number one indicator of fundraising success. You'll get a peek into the book I'm currently rereading (Emotional Intelligence 2.0), and how this work has changed the way I lead and raise money.Whether you're struggling with awkward board meetings, feeling stuck in fear, or wondering why your strategy just isn't landing - this one's for you.If you loved this episode or had a lightbulb moment, hit me up on LinkedIn and let me know. In this episode of the PBL Simplified podcast, host Ryan Steuer talks with Doug Noll, a former trial lawyer turned peacemaker, to discuss effective strategies for de-escalating conflicts with angry parents, students, and teachers. The conversation emphasizes the importance of understanding emotions in conflict resolution, introducing the concept of affect labeling as a powerful tool for calming individuals and fostering connection. Doug shares insights on how to apply these techniques in educational settings, highlighting the need for emotional intelligence among educators and students alike. The episode concludes with practical advice for administrators on how to implement these strategies in their schools. Takeaways Fights and arguments between human beings are unnecessary. Human beings are driven by emotions, not rationality. Affect labeling is a technique to de-escalate anger. Listening to emotions rather than words is crucial. De-escalation must occur before problem-solving. Students often act out due to a lack of connection. Emotional abuse in families affects student behavior. Affect labeling can create emotional safety in classrooms. Teachers can learn to help students self-regulate emotions. Cultural programming often devalues emotional expression. Welcome back to another episode of Know Your Physio—the podcast where we dive deep into the science of human potential and self-mastery. Today, I'm beyond excited to introduce a guest who truly embodies resilience and what it means to live with purpose: Dr. Chris Lee.Dr. Chris Lee is not only a neuroscientist but also an entrepreneur and, most importantly, a compassionate human being whose journey has been shaped by immense personal challenges. He's navigated the profound loss of his father, taken on the responsibility of being a single parent, and powered through the demanding grind of earning his doctorate. Through it all, Chris has developed an unparalleled understanding of the human nervous system and the true art of self-regulation.In this episode, we dive into Chris's personal “why”—a journey that started with heartache but has evolved into a beautiful, transformative philosophy. Chris shares his foundational mantra: “If the flower doesn't bloom, you don't blame the flower.” This mindset shift helped him reframe pain, purpose, and the environments that either limit or liberate us. It's a powerful way to look at adversity—not as something to avoid, but as the very fuel for growth. We talk about the stark difference between being driven by suffering versus being inspired by purpose. High performers, as Chris explains, often unknowingly uncover what truly regulates them and what doesn't. We also explore the science of emotional intelligence, the importance of co-regulation in relationships, and how to thrive in an overstimulated world through "low-stimulation" habits. This conversation is raw, real, and packed with insights that will challenge your understanding of success. It's an invitation to embrace discomfort, redefine what “winning” really means, and discover the “unf*ckable” version of yourself that emerges when you do the inner work. Trust me—you don't want to miss this one.

Martin's rich experience with 360-degree feedback highlights how a leader's strengths can sometimes inadvertently become weaknesses and why a heightened self-awareness is key in maintaining a balanced approach. We also tackle the complex web of unconscious biases and leadership blind spots, identifying six specific types that can impact our effectiveness. This engaging discussion anchors itself in a psychological model focused on the core motives driving behavior, with special attention to the needs for power, affiliation, and achievement. Martin touches on identity blind spots, where a disconnect between one's role and self-perception can create challenges, especially during transitions from individual contributor roles to managerial positions. He emphasizes the necessity of adapting one's identity to align with evolving roles and responsibilities. Finally, we tackle the emotional aspects of leadership, addressing the significance of emotional awareness for leadership success. A key skill is learning how to accurately identify and label a wide range of emotions. Martin and I also discuss the SBI (Situation, Behavior, Impact) framework, a powerful approach for promoting a culture of feedback and personal growth. Real connection means understanding your audience, staying true to yourself, and creating space for others. How do you communicate who you are, what you stand for, and leave space for others to do the same? At the Stanford Seed Summit in Cape Town, South Africa, three GSB professors explored why real connection is built through authentic communication. For Jesper Sørensen, authentic organizational communication means talking about a business in ways customers or investors can understand, like using analogies to relate a new business model to one that people already know. For incoming GSB Dean Sarah Soule, authentic communication is about truth, not trends. Her research on "corporate confession" shows that companies build trust when they admit their shortcomings — but only if those admissions connect authentically to their core business. And for Christian Wheeler, authentic communication means suspending judgment of ourselves and others. “We have a tendency to rush to categorization, to assume that we understand things before we really do,” he says. “Get used to postponing judgment.”In this special live episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, host Matt Abrahams and his panel of guests explore communication challenges for budding entrepreneurs. From the risks of comparing yourself to competitors to how your phone might undermine genuine connection, they reveal how authentic communication — whether organizational or personal — requires understanding your audience, staying true to your values, and creating space for others to be heard.Episode Reference Links:Jesper SørensenChristian WheelerSarah SouleEp.194 Live Lessons in Levity and Leadership: Me2We 2025 Part 1 Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (01:04) - Jesper Sørensen on Strategic Analogies (04:06) - Sarah Soule on Corporate Confessions (08:46) - Christian Wheeler on Spontaneity & Presence (12:06) - Panel Discussion: AI's Role in Research, Teaching, & Life (17:52) - Professors Share Current Projects (22:55) - Live Audience Q&A (32:53) - Conclusion *****This Episode is sponsored by Stanford. In an era where men's mental health is suffering from isolation and loneliness, these bromances offered a refreshing alternative to toxic masculinity. T It turns out that protecting and providing looks different in 2023, and these men showed what's possible when emotional intelligence takes center stage. The budding romances in the villa gave us fascinating case studies in attachment styles and relationship patterns. Huda's explosive reactions and self-sabotaging behaviors reflected the long term effects of trauma. Meanwhile, Amaya's remarkable trajectory from being criticized as "too much" to winning America's vote demonstrated the powerful influence of social validation on attraction. Vanessa Druskat, organizational psychologist and professor at the University of New Hampshire, discusses team emotional intelligence (EI) as a predictor of sustained performance. Building on her foundational work with Daniel Goleman, Druskat focuses not on individual EQ, but on the group-level norms and practices that distinguish effective teams, particularly in complex, high-stakes environments.   Druskat identifies three core team norms essential to cultivating group EI: mutual trust, constructive expression of emotions, and norms that support individual and group self-awareness. These are not “soft” ideals; they function as operational levers for managing conflict, decision-making quality, and adaptability.   Key takeaways include:   High-performing teams are not those without conflict, but those with processes for metabolizing conflict. Druskat emphasizes the role of emotional expression norms in allowing task-related disagreement while mitigating interpersonal friction.   Leaders significantly influence team EI by modeling openness and emotional competence, but sustained performance requires that these behaviors be embedded in team norms, not reliant on individual charisma or authority.   Team emotional intelligence predicts effectiveness beyond technical competence, especially when teams must adapt to ambiguity, pressure, or interdependence. Druskat cites multiple studies where team EI predicted performance outcomes more reliably than IQ or experience.   Psychological safety is necessary but not sufficient. Teams with high EI create an environment where members not only feel safe but are also expected to monitor and manage the group's emotional climate.   Organizations often undermine team EI unintentionally, through forced competition, misaligned incentives, or ignoring the emotional fallout of change. Druskat suggests that senior leaders regularly audit not just team outcomes, but the emotional processes behind them.   This episode reframes emotional intelligence not as a personal trait but as an institutional capability with measurable consequences for execution, resilience, and organizational learning. The discussion is particularly relevant for senior professionals seeking to institutionalize performance through culture rather than control.   Get Vanessa's book here: https://shorturl.at/u5KOs The Emotionally Intelligent Team: Building Collaborative Groups that Outperform the Rest   Here are some free gifts for you:   Overall Approach Used in Well-Managed Strategy Studies free download: www.firmsconsulting.com/OverallApproach   McKinsey & BCG winning resume free download: www.firmsconsulting.com/resumepdf   Enjoying this episode? Summary When you hear the word negotiation, what comes to mind? A boardroom showdown? A salary discussion? In this episode, Andy welcomes back Dr. Mike Clayton, author of How to Negotiate: Practical and Proven Skills to Help You Strike Better Deals to unpack the truth about negotiating. Mike brings clarity, wisdom, and practicality to a skill that project managers and frontline leaders use more often than they might realize. In this conversation, you'll learn why negotiation is not a talent you're born with. Rather, it's a skill you can build. Mike explains how to prepare effectively, how to open conversations the right way, and how to bargain in ways that foster agreement, not conflict. You'll discover surprising examples of everyday negotiations, phrases that help (and hurt) rapport, and even ideas to help your kids become more confident negotiators. If you're looking for insights on how to lead through conversations that matter, this episode is for you! Sound Bites “Negotiation is a process of searching for an agreement that satisfies both parties.” “You can become a good negotiator the same way you become a good leader: by learning and practicing.” “Building agreement on agreement is easier than building agreement on disagreement.” "What will you get when you've got it? Because that's the motivator." “If we respect each other and follow a process, we can negotiate even in tough situations.” “The phrases that are best for building rapport are questions.” “Signposting the junction means alerting our counterparty that we think we're coming to the point where we need to stop.” “Your credibility is currency. Character and trust are foundational in negotiation.” “Almost every conversation where two people want different things is a negotiation.” “It's okay to negotiate. It's okay to walk away. #626: A software programmer and an accountant walk into retirement planning. Are they being creative? Dr. Zorana Ivcevic Pringle, a senior research scientist at Yale University's Center for Emotional Intelligence, says absolutely. Pringle defines creativity as something that's both original and effective, whether you're solving an accounting problem or planning an unconventional retirement. We explore the gap between having ideas and actually implementing them. You have this brilliant vision for starting a business, changing careers, or retiring early, but somehow you never take the first step. Pringle calls this the implementation gap, and she explains why it happens. The conversation centers on a hypothetical couple: both 55 years old, one a programmer, the other in middle management. They want to retire at 57 and travel the world. Pringle uses this example to illustrate how creative problem-solving works in real life. She explains that creativity requires comfort with uncertainty. When you're doing something new, you don't have a blueprint or checklist. There's always the risk that your early retirement plan could fail spectacularly — imagine having to return to work at 59 after the market tanks and your portfolio gets crushed. Here's the key insight: you don't need full confidence to start. Pringle compares creative confidence to fuel in a car. You don't need a full tank — you can start with just a quarter tank and refuel along the way. Each small success builds more confidence for the next step. The bottom line? Innovation happens through constant iteration. Your final destination might change throughout your career and retirement, and that's completely normal.
