In “What Lies Beneath,” Pastor Robert Madu teaches that lies are like icebergs — small on the surface but powerful enough to sink our lives. God hates lies because they keep us trapped in fear. From “micro lies” to “mirror lies” to “malicious lies,” Pastor Robert shows how deception quietly grows until it destroys. God exposes lies not to shame us, but to bring healing and freedom. Truth isn't just a principle — it's a person, and His name is Jesus. Thank you for partnering with Social Dallas! Read Online“Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity—greedy, dishonest, adulterous—or even like this tax collector.'” Luke 18:10–11What a sad prayer. Of course it wasn't even a prayer to God since the Pharisee “spoke this prayer to himself.” The prayer of the tax collector, however, was a perfect model for all prayer. We read that the tax collector “stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.'” Which prayer more resembles your own prayer? To honestly answer that question, let's examine both prayers. First of all, the contrast of these two prayers is a contrast between humility and pride. The Pharisee was clearly full of pride. Pride blinds us from true self-knowledge. Saint Teresa of Ávila teaches us that the very first thing we must do on our journey to God is obtain self-knowledge through humility. Without that, we will never grow in holiness. The sin of pride is obvious in the prayer of the Pharisee and, therefore, his lack of true self-knowledge is also evident. Note that even his physical posture of standing depicts pride. Throughout the Scriptures, kneeling, or even falling prostrate, is the disposition of the humble. In addition to standing, the Pharisee's prayer was a list of his own goodness. He very well may have fasted twice a week and paid tithes on his whole income. But his prayer suggests that he did this by his own effort. He did not ascribe those acts to the grace and strength of God, which means they were not true acts of charity. His prayer suggests that he doesn't need God in order to do good. This is also seen in the fact that he asks nothing of God. Instead, he simply thanks God for how good he is through his own effort. The result is that God gives him nothing, since he asked for nothing.True prayer must begin with the humble recognition of our weakness and need for God. The tax collector expressed this humility by bowing his head to the ground, not even daring to look up to Heaven. This reveals he did not consider himself worthy of God's grace. Truth be told, he wasn't worthy of it. That's why God's grace is a mercy. It is all mercy in that He bestows that which we are not worthy to receive. And He only bestows it on those who know they are not worthy of it. The words spoken by the tax collector are the perfect model of prayer because his words depict these truths. As a sinner, he doesn't deserve mercy but begs for God's grace as an act of God's mercy. When you pray, how do you pray? What is the disposition of your heart and for what do you pray? Begin by considering the physical position in which you pray. Though we can pray standing, sitting, kneeling or even lying down, there is something very good about kneeling or even lying prostrate. It doesn't mean we have to do so the entire time we pray, but it is a good practice to kneel, bow your head or fall down prostrate before God at least for a moment each day. Do you do this? If not, consider making this a daily habit. When you pray, do you begin your prayer with humility? We begin the Mass by examining our conscience and confessing our sins. This is a good example of how to begin your prayer every time you pray. Humble yourself by calling to mind your sins and weaknesses. Confess them to God and acknowledge the fact that, because of your sins, you are unworthy of God's mercy. Humility like this will help you to see yourself as God sees you, and this will help you open yourself to the grace you need from God to grow in holiness.Reflect, today, upon the humility found in the prayer of this tax collector. As you do, look at your own practice of prayer and discern whether you imitate this tax collector's disposition and prayer. Try to commit to physically humbling yourself before our Lord every day. Kneel, bow your head, or fall down prostrate every day. When you do pray, beg for mercy as one who doesn't deserve anything from God. This is the humble truth on which all prayer must be based. The more you can humble yourself this way, the more God will lift you up and pour forth His mercy upon you. O God, be merciful to me, a sinner. I bow before You, most glorious and merciful God. I offer You my praise and gratitude for Your abundant mercy in my life. I am not worthy of You and Your grace, but You bestow it anyway. For that I thank You with profound gratitude and beg for the ongoing gift of Your grace. Jesus, I trust in You.Image via Adobe Stock: Featured, MainSource of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2025 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. #214 The Quiet Turning: Meditation, Yoga, and the Truth of Impermanence

    Yoga Inspiration

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2025 65:50

Podcast notes The Quiet Turning: Meditation, Yoga, and the Truth of Impermanence One of the most frustrating instructions I ever received in a meditation class was deceptively simple: Close your eyes and quiet the mind. I remember thinking, if I could do that, I wouldn't be here learning how to meditate. Like so many others, I was searching for peace amidst the chaos of my own thoughts. Fortunately, I stumbled upon an ancient method that didn't demand silence from the start. It welcomed me exactly as I was. And over the years, daily meditation has become a cornerstone of my spiritual path, a way not to escape my thoughts but to learn how to be with them, honestly and gently.  Many people believe they can't meditate because their minds are too restless. But that's precisely why meditation works. You don't need to be naturally calm to benefit from the practice, in fact, it's often those with the most inner turbulence who stand to gain the most. The very effort to sit, to observe, to try, even if imperfectly, is itself transformative. Every sincere attempt to concentrate, even for a moment, changes the texture of our awareness. Presence deepens. Stillness peeks through. In this way, meditation becomes a necessary companion to the physical discipline of yoga āsana. While āsana strengthens and opens the body, meditation refines the mind. Both are limbs of the same eightfold path and thrive in relationship to each other. If you're immersed in a strong physical practice, I invite you to explore the quiet power of sitting. If you already sit, but haven't stepped onto a mat, consider how movement might deepen your awareness. It's in the meeting of stillness and motion, of breath and body, that yoga reveals its deepest gifts. There is a turning that happens in every sincere moment of meditation: a turning inward, a turning away from distraction, and when we're ready, a turning toward truth. Seeing the Dhamma in Impermanence The Buddha's path is experiential, not theoretical. In the Saṃyutta Nikāya (SN 22.45), he says:  “Yo aniccaṃ passati, so dhammaṃ passati. Yo dhammaṃ passati, so aniccaṃ passati.” “One who sees impermanence sees the Dhamma. One who sees the Dhamma sees impermanence.” To walk the path is to see clearly—moment by moment—that all things arise and pass. This insight is not depressing, but liberating. It opens the heart to compassion, to presence, and to the letting go that leads to peace. Practice LIVE with me exclusively on Omstars! Start your journey today with a 7-day trial at omstars.com. How do you manage life's disappointments? Hopefully better than I did. In one of my darkest seasons, I resorted to blaming God for my mistakes. I wandered off course and like the prodigal child, I squandered what was my inheritance. Then one day I heard a voice inside me said, "Go home." It was a command to go home to Abba Daddy. I knew that life wasn't supposed to be this way. I felt completely hopeless. Angry. Disappointed. I truly believed God had abandoned my prayers. This was a tough pill to swallow, because I used to be Miss positivity, and I had a crystal-clear vision for my future—and pie-in-the-sky dreams and bold faith to believe that they would all come true. But fast forward nearly a decade later… and nothing looked the way I thought it would. The fire fizzled. The hope faded. The faith? Well, I felt like I was just going through the motions.I would complete my daily "spiritual checklist." And without clarity and faith to believe, I wandered off course. I tried so many different things—side hustle and  business ideas—thinking, “This is it! This will be the one!”But deep down… nothing fit. It felt like David trying to wear Saul's armor to fight Goliath—uncomfortable, heavy, and completely wrong for the battle I was meant to fight.I tried network marketing—2 different companies. Affiliate marketing—2 different companies. I was approved as an Amazon influencer. I invested in and shared digital marketing. And then, as I mentioned small odds & ends jobs and even drove DoorDash. Ms. Shine with Frannie was now delivering tacos instead of testimonies. To say I was humbled is an understatement. I couldn't help but think, “Lord, where are you?! How did I end up here? This is not who You called me to be!”But here's the good news: God never left my side. In that dark and disappointing season, He spoke to me so gently:“I know you're hurting and it feels like I've left you… but remember, no one shouts when they're standing right next to you.” Sis, that Truth changed everything. And I pray it is a word in season for you, too.I realized God was faithful and just like His word said, "He would never leave me nor forsake me." He was closer than ever—quietly guiding me, refining me, and reminding me who I really am.Through that process, I didn't just find direction—I found my identity. And now, I'm on a mission to help others do the same.God wants to take all of your unique gifts, talents, and life experiences and partner with you to fulfill your purpose, calling, and assignment. Here's what I've learned: Your purpose is why you were created. Your calling is the unique way you fulfill that purpose. Your assignment is how you're walking that out in this season. (And yes, it changes—just like nature's seasons do!)So, sister, if you've been in a season where you've felt hopeless, disappointed, or even angry with God—if you've questioned your dreams, your direction, or your worth—please know this: God's got you. Remember—no one shouts when they're standing right next to you. If you've been nodding your head while you've listening to this, it's because this message is for you. This is your sign to join me for my free mini-masterclass: From Confusion to Calling: Step Boldly Into Your God-Given DestinyMonday, October 27 | 8PM ESTLet's reignite your fire and help you get clear on your purpose, calling, and assignment—and walk in confidence as the daughter of the King you were created to be. Email me at shinewithfrannie@gmail.com and put the word DESTINY in the subject line and I will get you all of the details.

Read Online“Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison. I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.” Luke 12:57–59The Church Fathers offer many different interpretations of this passage. Among them, Saint Bede says that our “opponent” can be seen as the Word of God, in the sense that the Word of God makes war upon our weaknesses and sins. When we listen to the Word of God, our Lord will convict us of our faults so that we can reconcile our lives with the Truth of the Word of God Himself. When you think about God's holy Word, in its entirety, what most convicts you? Sometimes we try to downplay such personal convictions. We rationalize our actions and dismiss what God is saying to us. Are there any teachings of Jesus that you recall that have truly stung you to the heart? If so, this is a grace, and it's an opportunity to fulfill the lesson from our Lord taught in the passage above. God does not convict our hearts so as to condemn us. Rather, He convicts us, as an opponent to our sin, so that we can “make an effort to settle the matter on the way.” The conscience is a wonderful gift from our Lord and can be likened to this passage above. It is a form of courtroom where our Lord desires not to have to issue punishment upon us. Instead, He desires that we engage His holy Word, listen to what He says, and settle our sin by repenting immediately.Among the many lessons taught by our Lord, it is often the lesson that jumps out at us, even in a startling way, that we need to pay attention to the most. God often brings His most urgent teachings to us by causing us to feel a sense of guilt that cannot be denied. If we listen to these convictions, then we will not have any need to stand before the Judge. But if we do not, if we bury these convictions, downplay them and ignore them, then our Lord will find it necessary to keep at us. We will begin to experience His judgment, and we will see the effects of being out of His good graces. And in the end, if we fail to repent of the more serious sins in our lives, then we will even be held accountable for the smallest of sins. We will be required to “pay the last penny.”Reflect, today, upon the idea that the Word of God, all that our Lord has taught us, is the opponent to the sin in your soul. This good and holy opponent wants only what is best for you. Commit yourself to an ongoing reading of God's holy Word so that you will be continually disposed to hear all that God wants to say to you and so that you will be able to reconcile with our Lord before He is compelled to issue forth His judgments. My most merciful Judge, You desire that I listen to Your holy Word, revealed through Scripture, so as to receive Your most merciful conviction of my sin. I pray that I will be open to always hear all that You desire to say to me so that I can respond with generosity and trust, reconciling with You and others continually through my journey in life. Enliven my conscience with Your holy Word, dear Lord. Jesus, I trust in You.Image: Братья Белоусовы (Палех), Public domain, via Wikimedia CommonsSource of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2025 My Catholic Life! Inc. In weekly 30 minute episodes, we will reflect on the lives and works of figures such as Samuel Miller, James Henley Thornwell, and B.B. Warfield.
