Depression and seasons of deep sadness can make life feel like it’s swallowed up in darkness. In our daily prayer and devotion, we remember that whether triggered by circumstances or unexplainable inner struggles, those moments can feel isolating and overwhelming. Yet Scripture reminds us that the light of Christ shines brighter than any darkness we face. Jesus is not only the Light of the World (John 8:12), but He also promises that the darkness cannot overcome Him. Even when our hearts feel heavy and hopeless, His presence brings warmth, direction, and peace. Turning to Him in prayer, leaning on His Word, and allowing His people to surround us with encouragement can help us see His light even in the darkest valleys. Depression may not vanish overnight, but the promise of John 1:5 assures us that the darkness will never win. Christ’s light prevails—and we can cling to Him for the strength to keep moving forward. Insomnia affects about 22% of adults worldwide and raises the risk of depression, Alzheimer's disease, and cardiovascular events, while also draining energy, focus, and overall health A review of 22 clinical trials found yoga, tai chi, and walking to be the top three forms of exercise for improving sleep quality, duration, and efficiency in people with insomnia Walking stood out for reducing insomnia severity the most, and moderate-intensity walking is safe to repeat daily without the health risks linked to excessive vigorous exercise Yoga increased total sleep time by nearly two hours per night, while tai chi improved both subjective and objective sleep measures, with benefits lasting months or even years after training Benefits from walking and tai chi were seen in as little as four to 12 weeks, showing that consistent, moderate activity is more effective for long-term sleep improvement than intense, high-volume workouts
While the acclaimed musician Emma Swift had experienced painful periods of depression in the past, fed by grief or the first Trump presidency, her psychotic break and mental breakdown in 2023 was new territory. She lost touch with reality, believing that her electronic devices had been hacked, that she was being followed, images of heaven and hell emerging. Emma actually had a sense that she was losing her mind and went to the hospital, reporting as much, but she was turned away because she wasn't deemed sick enough. Finally, she flew back to her native Australia and went directly from the airport to a hospital where she remained for several weeks.Looking back on it now, she sees some hormonal changes, a mugging in London, and the hard times of the covid pandemic - especially for a musician - being possible contributing factors. But says there's no real way of knowing for sure why it happened for sure, which made it all the more frightening.In the end, she got treatment, “came out the other side,” as she says, and was helped by a variety of treatments including hormonal therapy.Emma Swift's new album, The Resurrection Game, was largely written in response to this traumatic period.
