Dena Ganje, My Mechanic, Tuscon, AZ.  At 19 she received her first car as a surprise from her future husband Billy, this was a vehicle he restored and since then she have been a part of the automotive industry in one aspect or another. Key Talking Points Community help- you have the time even if you don't think you do. If you're thinking about it, you're already doing it and you need to put it into action. People think the little things don't add up but it does. If your customers or employees ask for your help (sponsoring little league) find a way to help. What's important to them should be important to you. Don't feel pressured to purchasing top-level sponsorships, consider smaller donations so you do more.   “People don't care how much you know, they want to know how much you care.” Driving Forward by My Mechanic is an idea in process. They have to date given away 4 vehicles to persons in need. These vehicles are either donated to or purchased by My Mechanic, typically from customers. They also include a care package of support with the donation such as a gift certificate for future maintenance or repair needs that may come up within the next year.   Community support for someone else's charity that helped with Dena's charity- Southern Arizona Book Heroes is a Tucson local nonprofit that provides books to first responders to distribute to the Children within their reach. For Example, when a Police Officer is responding to an event and there is a child present they will have a duffel bag of books to choose something to share with the child. This effort will hopefully provide a distraction to the child reducing trauma as well as break down the barriers that 1st responders often face when working with Children. Lastly and equally important is to encourage literacy. The founder of SABH is a single mom, working full time and volunteers for the American Legion as well as running her own nonprofit. When she said she needed help to sort, organize and fill the bags Dena organized a volunteer day at My Mechanic to fill that need.  Employees, customers, and friends came to help. They sorted thousands of books, we filled almost a hundred bags. Over the next two weeks, SABH was able to deliver bags of books to 5 precincts all over Arizona. During the volunteer day, Dena became aware of the condition of the founder's own vehicle. It was not reliable or safe. Everyone at My Mechanic nominated her for a car from driving forward. Following all that she posted about it on Facebook which created a great buzz online about our business and our charity. Resulting in another running vehicle to be donated to the program for the next person in need.    “Cars are vessels of freedom.” Culture- employees are able to see an impact of what they do beyond the day-to-day work. They are helping their community, they see the donation vehicle they've worked on be donated to someone in need. It's more than a job.   1999- Billy Ganje worked as a full-time technician at local shops while working on vehicles on his own on the side. Nobody would bully me, let's just put it that way. I'm not that kind of person. The story that I think is important about mindfulness was more by accident. As a captain of an undefeated football team, we had no training, but I would go into what, clearly was meditation. On the defence I played middle line backer. I would just sit in a state of silence with a totally quiet, mindful mind. It gave me the ability to move in any direction once the play started. Having a quiet mind, sitting there as a middle line-backer, I'm ready to go in any direction because there's no distractions. When someone is looking for a coach or consultant to help them with a particular issue, they tend to go with someone they trust.  In online business, you will hear people talk about ‘know, like and trust’ factor.  How do you become known?  And more importantly, how can you build up the trust that leads to someone investing in your products or services? In today's podcast, I talk about five steps to help you build your authority online.   1.  Specialise What is your area of expertise? When someone needs a tax accountant, they look for a specialist who focuses on taxes.   When someone is building a physiotherapy business, they will follow a coach who works only with physio businesses.   By choosing your niche – by job type, customer base, age group or location, you will attract your ideal clients more quickly. Choosing your niche allows you to focus on creating content for that niche.   How can you choose what to specialise in? Talk to your customers and listen to their main concerns. Choosing a niche can involve a lot of factors – is there a need for your service?  Will people pay for it? Are you interested in focusing on that area?   2.  Listen to your audience What do your network want to know about?  Consider the questions you get asked time and time again.    What can you help your audience with?  What are their main pain points? One way to become known as an expert online, is by creating regular content that answers the questions your audience have.   Create content that not only leads your ideal client to reach out to you, but consider how you can put out messaging that lets people know who is NOT the right fit to work with you.  For example: Your ideal client may be someone who is in the business start up phase – so your content should help them with the first stages of business.  Reading Suggestions: They Ask, You Answer by Marcus Sheridan Content Fortress by Martin Huntbach and Lyndsay Cambridge   3. Create content to help your audience.  Start sharing content with your network that showcases your knowledge and expertise. Keep it simple – you want to be able to attract your ideal clients and customers so don’t overwhelm them.   4. Become known as a guest expert Consider creating content for other larger organisations.  Become known as a guest expert – choose the publications or shows you know your ideal client is already reading or engaging with.    Podcast Guesting Start with pitching hosts who take guests – try connecting with podcast hosts who serve your ideal client.    Online Summits Submit yourself as a speaker for an online summit.  Once you start to appear as a guest expert on summits and podcasts, other hosts will notice and start to reach out!    5.  Talk to your network Connecting with your audience online is not a one-way street. Rather than broadcasting out to your audience, try to engage with them.  For Example –  In your daily or weekly activity on LinkedIn, take time to comment on posts from others in your network. Try to leave constructive comments – think about how you would behave if you were responding to someone speaking in person. The Key to Creating a Productive Day is to Start Your Day off Right   Little things will add up whether they are positive or negative   Example:   -Don't hit the snooze bar -Make Your Bed -Start with Gratitude -Start with you   I know it sounds simple but you have to know by now that the fundamentals are the key to success in anything.   Your brain doesn't differentiate between little or big.  It's a win either way.   Don't discount the small things you can do to create a quick and early win.   Stack up the wins quickly in the morning and you will feel productive.   On the contrary, your brain also knows when you are being lazy, unproductive, “settling” and starting with negativity and un productive habits.   For Example, here are some things you should NEVER do in the mornings: -check your phone -check your email -start getting overwhelmed with your day -turn on the news -you get the point…   You must be the one in control of your life, your mind and your activities.   You need to catch yourself before the bad habits kick in.  In order to do this you have to be prepared.  Prepare the night before. And, be proactive about what you are doing to start your day.   Here are some tips… -lay out your clothes -have a playlist, videos or podcast you do automatically -have affirmations or statements you say when you open your eyes -start with prayer -start with gratitude…list 5 things when you open your eyes -create 3 priorities the night before -fill your schedule night (or week) before   There are plenty of things to do to prepare, protect and prioritize your activities in advance.  Be proactive not reactive.   Preparation is the SEPARATOR in your life between positive and negative experiences each day.   NEXT…and this important to remember….   Even when you don't start off the way you'd like, you must remember…   Every part of your day is a new quarter, a new half, a fresh start.   You choose how to finish your day as much as how you start your day.   NEXT…set yourself up for productivity and fresh starts by time blocking your activities.   This makes it easier to reset and move forward.   Brendon Burchard says he always like to move from task to task in his day by first releasing the task and then resetting his intention for the next activity.  This is a great way to create a fresh mindset and take a slight break between things.   Too often we go from thing to things and the entire day just blends together.  This causes issues if we are having a bad day.   We truly have the ability to just stop, recharge and reset our day at any time.   FINALLY, it is imperative that you have direction.     Please please find time in your schedule to work on your vision, goals, dreams and desires.    When you have direction it is much easier to get back on track.   When you have direction it is much easier to get past the bumps in the road.   When you have direction it is much easier to see past the current day.   Remember that it is key to execute and live it the moment, but you must have a strong desire to create a better life in order to PULL you in the right direction.  Blissful Dissatisfaction as Ed Mylett puts it.   Anyway, I hope these suggestions will help you to create some early wins in your day.  I hope they remind you of how simple it is to create a winning day.   And I hope it will help you create progress, success and truly UNLEASH YOUR POTENTIAL.   Thanks for tuning in.   George Wright III

Remember if you bay a call you're buying the right to buy that stock for the price at that time. For Example, let's say you buy the 32 dollar option for June 23rd, on that date the price is $40.00, you can exercise your right and buy the stock for $32.00 plus the money you spent on the contract. If it is down to $29.00 you can pay $32.00 for the stock but why would you? Now with all that said and done, we are not interested in buying the stock so our mission is to sell the option to someone else before it expires. In many podcasts and articles, you use "Thou Shalt Not Kill" to demonstrate morally should statement, which is one of the 3 valid should statements in English. I'm still somewhat confused about this concept. To tell you where I get stuck, I come up with three thought experiments. Imagine the following situations in which a should statement may come to mind: Situation 1 Lisa stole some money from a grocery store. When arrested by police, Lisa said with tears, "I shouldn't have stolen money. I feel ashamed for what I have done." In this case, it is obvious that "I shouldn't have stolen money" is a morally should statement, and also a legally should statement, because Lisa did something that violates the law and her moral principle. DAVID’S COMMENT: YES, YOU ARE CORRECT. LISA’S STATEMENT CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS A LEGAL SHOULD AND A MORAL SHOULD. Situation 2 One day, Bob went to Walmart to buy a suit. When he was passing by a shelf, a thought appeared in her mind. "What would happen if I steal this suit? I really want it, but I have very little money." When he came back home, he talked to himself," I shouldn't have felt the urges to steal things. And I shouldn’t have thought about stealing the suit." DAVID’S COMMENT: THESE WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED VALID SHOULD STATEMENTS BY MOST PEOPLE, SINCE WE HAVE FREEDOM OF THOUGHT. HUMAN BEINGS HAVE ALL KINDS OF FANTASIES AND URGES ALL THE TIME—AT LEAST I KNOW THAT I DO! AN URGE ONLY BECOMES IMMORAL OR ILLEGAL WHEN YOU ACT ON IT. Greetings from Geneva. Vincent Hi Vincent, "I wish I had gotten better sooner." This is a correct statement without the "should." This simple shift in language is called the Semantic Technique, and it was developed by Dr. Albert Ellis who kind of gave birth to cognitive therapy in the 1950s, along with Dr. Karen Horney about the same time. Instead of using a should, you use “it would be preferable if” or “I wish X was true.” In addition, it isn't actually true that you "should" have gotten better sooner! The universe does not always conform to our expectations. Just because we want something, it doesn't follow that it "should" happen. I'd love to have a new Tesla sports car, at least in fantasy, but it isn't true that I "should" have one. It would be “great” if you had gotten better sooner, that’s absolutely true. “I should have gotten better sooner.” That’s totally false. In addition, although one might think that no one would "want" depression, my research and new clinical work indicate that resistance is nearly always the key to recovery. In other words, people do cling to depression, anxiety, troubled relationships, and habits and addictions, but don’t realize why they are resisting change. Once you suddenly see why you are resisting, your resistance paradoxically disappears, and recovery is then just a stone’s throw away. Your work has been helping me through my anxiety. However, I really struggled with this podcast. The concept of no self shot my anxiety way up and made me feel hopeless. It made me feel almost as if I was not real or that there is nothing worth striving for. I love helping people. But I feel like I don’t have a purpose if I don’t have a self. It makes me feel worse than before. David’s answer. Hi Charles, The “great death” of the self is a challenging concept, and while it is incredibly liberating, lots of people—most, in fact—don’t “get it.” Some get angry. Some struggle with trying to understand what this could possibly mean. And some find the concept very threatening. That’s why I deleted the chapter from my book. In fact, a couple extremely brilliant and interested colleagues totally couldn’t grasp it, and felt frustrated by my writing on the concept. sometimes, ideas are so simple and basic that people cannot grasp them. The Buddha ran into this problem 2500 years ago. People thought he was fantastic, but almost none of his followers experienced the enlightenment he was so excited to teach them. The 20th century philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein, ran into the same problem. He solve all the problems of philosophy, but when he was alive, it was rumored that only seven people in the world, including one of his favorite students, Norman Malcolm, could grasp what he was saying. He went in and out of intense depression and loneliness during his life, in part because of his frustration with trying to teach the obvious. In my book, Feeling Great, I teach that there are actually four “Great Deaths” for the patient, corresponding to recovery from depression, anxiety disorders, relationship conflicts, and habits and addictions. There are also four “Great Deaths” for TEAM therapists. Those sections might be helpful for you! In addition, I focus on the fact that people can never judge your “self,” only something specific that you think or do. Depression cannot exist on the specific level, only up in the clouds of abstraction. For example, Overgeneralization is one of the ten cognitive distortions I described in my first book, Feeling Good. When you Overgeneralize, you see a negative event as a never-ending pattern of defeat, and you might also Overgeneralize from some specific flaw or defect to your “self.” You will read about an attractive and vivacious young professional woman who had the thought, “I’m unloveable,” when her boyfriend of two years broke up with her. This is classic depression thinking, and “self” thinking. She thinks she has a “self” that can be loveable or unloveable. But this is simply not true, and it’s not productive, because she’ll spend all her time ruminating and feeling worthless. An alternative is to focus on why the (overall excellent) relationship didn’t work out, and what she can do to change and learn and grow, so as to make the next relationship even better. You can pick up on the details in the chapter on Overgeneralization if you’re interested! As I point out in Feeling Great, the “death of the self” is not like a funeral, it’ like an incredible celebration of life. Death of your old concept of what you are is liberating, and leads to instant rebirth. My teachings cannot make you happy or unhappy. Your thoughts about what I’m saying create all of your feelings, positive or negative. At any rate, thank you for a most important question that most of my audience will definitely related to. As an aside, I lost my “self” years ago, and what a relief that was. Sadly, it comes back to life from time to time, and then I struggle again, until I realize what’s happening. One day, what I’m saying may make sense! In the meantime, please accept my apologies concerning the “self!” If it gives you comfort to believe you have a “self,” no problem. But the “self” is just a concept, and not a “thing” that could exist or not exist. When you lose your precious and protected “self,” you lose nothing, because there was never anything there in the first place! But while you lose nothing, you do inherit the earth, as nearly all great religious leaders—Buddha, Jesus, and others—have taught us. David   Hi Dr. Burns, I’ve just listened to your podcast episode on suicide and found it really interesting and useful but I have a few questions. Firstly, how is your requirement that the patient agree to not make any suicide attempts for the rest of their life any different to a ‘suicide contract’ which you mention are not effective? Also, you talk about doing this assessment at the intake and making non-attempts a condition of therapy. If the patient/client agrees to this, why then do you continue to monitor suicidal thoughts in each session in the BMS? Presumably because the agreement is no guarantee of cessation of thoughts. Surely if you’ve told them it’s a condition of therapy with you to not make any attempts then they’d be likely to not tell you about them even if they occurred, and don’t see how setting the initial ground rule resolves the problem. And lastly, when suicidal thoughts, urges, or fantasies do come again in the BMS how do you handle it then? Do you tell them you’ll end therapy, say “but you promised”? Looking forward to your reply. Most patients with borderline personality disorder will become enraged by the gentle ultimatum at the initial evaluation, and if they decide this is not the type of therapy they want, so be it. The techniques I use will not be effective with patients who continue to threaten suicide. TEAM therapy requires TEAM work. Most, nearly all, patients will "get it" and will decide to continue with the therapy. They can have suicidal thoughts and urges, and we can work on them together in therapy. However, to my way of thinking, it is important that they therapist and patient be protected, in a safe environment. If the patient starts threatening to make a suicide attempt, then they will need another form of more intensive treatment like hospitalization, day care, or intensive outpatient treatment. These are options I cannot personally provide for them. I monitor suicidal urges before and after each session with every patient with no exceptions to protect the patient and to protect myself as well. Thanks! PS the suicide contract is an agreement not to attempt suicide "while we are working together." This is very weak, as the patient can suddenly decide he or she is dropping out of therapy and making a suicide attempt. And this often happens. My contract is more demanding, and intentionally so. Patients must also agree to do psychotherapy homework, too. Some patients want to make the therapist a hostage with suicide threats, which can and so work as a form of manipulation and hostility. Then the therapist is in an almost constant state of agitation, anxiety, and frustration. If I allow a patient to make my life miserable, how can I teach that patient how to be happy? We are all ONE—we go up and down together. If I allow you to make my life miserable, then I am allowing you to make your own life miserable, too. I’ve listened to all of your podcasts, and read most of your books, and am very grateful for the changes you, Rhonda, Fabrice and the rest of the team have made to my life. I’ve just listened to this episode, and there’s one thing I’m struggling with, which is the concept of the moral should. I’ve done a few things that made me intensely guilty – one in particular was not standing by and supporting a friend who needed people when he was going through a particularly hard time. He was angry and disappointed with me, and, in hindsight, rightly so. He has since forgiven me but I still struggle with it. I feel that supporting him was a moral should. The knowledge that I didn’t do what I should have done led to a lot of guilt and shame, and eventually depression. You say that a moral should is valid; so therefore, I feel that my negative thoughts on this are not misguided but valid – I did something morally wrong and deserved to feel bad for it. Would love to include this on an Ask David, using just your first name, or even a fake name if you prefer. A quick response might be to ask how many minutes per day would you like to dedicate to feeling guilty? And for how many days, months, or years? In your spiritual or religious beliefs, is a person supposed to feel intensely guilty forever? Most of us have done things we are ashamed of, or feel guilty about. How much guilt and shame would you recommend for me, for example? And what is the goal of the guilt and shame? And how guilty would you recommend I feel, between 0% and 100%? That's one approach. Another approach would be A = Assessment of Resistance, listing what the guilt shows about you that's positive and awesome, and then asking yourself why in the world you'd want to let go of the guilt, given all the many real positives. Then you might validly decide to “dial it down” to some more acceptable level. For example, if you now feel 90% guilty, perhaps 15% or 20% would be enough. In addition, you could also decide how many minutes of guilt you would recommend. If you now feel guilty about eight hours a day, would 10 minutes be enough? If so, you could schedule your “guilt periods” ahead of time, and then really work hard at feeling guilty during those ten minutes. Then, when you’re done with your “guilt work,” you can return to joyous and loving living! Also, instead of one ten minute daily guilt binge, you could schedule, for example, three guilt binges, each three minutes long, in the morning, at lunch time, and in the evening, like three pills the doctor prescribed! David David emphasizes the value of the search function. Often you can find your questions have already been addressed. But first, you have a decision to make, and this is always based on ONE person you may want to interact with. First, ask yourself if you do actually want a better relationship with person X, Y, or Z. There is no rule that says we have to get along better with everyone. I think that Joe Biden is doing a pretty good job of promoting unity, and not diverseness in our country. Hopefully, the forces of love and unity will win out over the forces of hatred and war, but it’s not at all clear what direction our country is heading for. And we’re seeing now that at times the tensions are become so intense, and the hatred so strong, that violence is once again on the increase. Day of the DeadThere's really no way to describe it. One minute you have it all. The next all is gone. Its hard to describe the feeling of death. Unless someone near you has died.Then you experience that sting that you cannot put into words. Death reminds us about love because we were created to love. And when someone dies, we find it strange, not showing and sharing that love. This past summer I had to bury one of our alpacas. Our furry friends can become our family and its like losing someone that you came to love. Sweet little alpaca would no longer greet me. What is it about death That is so hard to understand? if you've ever lost someone, you know, that feeling that you would do anything to see them again, anything to talk to them again, anything to hug them again.Death is perhaps the only thing humans have found no cure for. If you’ve ever lost a friend or family member, you know the pain of this. But this morning I want to talk to you about the idea of talking to our dead relatives. If a visitor from another world were to sit down on a couch with us and turn on Hulu or Netflix or Disney – ok especially Disney – there is something – a theme – an idea they would start to pick up. Once I tell you you will say ‘oh yea, that’s true’. It's the idea that somehow, there is life beyond. Somehow death is not the end. Somehow, in ways we don’t fully understand…yet – death is still a mystery but that contacting our loved ones --- or them contacting us is such a beautiful thought. Here in America, we are pretty obsessed with this idea of death being nothing more than a gateway to the next life. Whether it’s zombies, the undead, ghosts, conjuring spirits or anything we celebrate on Halloween these days – death has become big business – especially the scary side of it. But then there’s the other side – the beautiful side – the idea of reconnecting with our loved ones. I lost my dad in a car accident a few years back. There really isn’t much you can say other than ‘man I would trade the whole world – just to talk to that person one more time’ and usually our desire to talk to them is to tell them how much we love them. That’s why in most films – Love and Death are so interconnected. Now if you’ve ever heard of the story of scripture – the real meta narrative you would know that this war between good and evil – love and selfishness – life and death started before humans arose on the scene. With this war, a large segment of the citizens of another realm were kicked out of the capital of the galactic realms. And the bible basically tells us the inner workings of this war and it really comes down to who has the power over life…and death. The bible describes a day in our future when it will seem as though the dead – from our time and centuries in the past will appear to us . Now the question we should be asking if this is a battle for our souls and our destiny – could it be possible that this banished legion race of beings could personify our loved ones with the hope and attempt to deceive us? If your loved one walked up behind you right now and sounded, smelled and seemed the same as they did while alive – is there anything you know or believe that would help you determine if this was them or not? And on that note, if death is just a portal to the next life then why do we fight so hard to stay alive? We love the idea of talking to the dead, celebrating life after death and who can blame us ? The Sumerians did, the Egyptians did,  the Persians, the Greeks, the idea of talking to the dead is found in Homer's Odyssey..and  the Romans And now the Christians.  Ok you get it, its chronic, and its basically everyone. So here's a few stats about this phenomenon, Pew research, estimated that nearly 1.4 million people – that’s more people than there are members of my denomination – that 1.4 million people in the United States identify as practicing Witches.  There are more witches in North America than there are mainline Presbyterians author. Julie Royce is quoted as saying that Wicca is A form of paganism that is effectively repackaged witchcraft for the millennial consumption. No longer are witchcraft and paganism, satanic and demonic. It's a pre-Christian tradition that promotes free thought and understanding of earth and nature. I’m really fascinated right now with the gorwing discussion or tension I should say of people who worship the creator vs. those who worship the creation. I think this is the great issue of worship in the world today – it was the same in history – whether they were called gentiles or heathen or pagans vs those who were monotheistic. The American religious identification survey gives Wicca an average annual growth of 143%. And latest estimates say that the movement is doubling in size every 30 months. According to the journal, the statesman and Elizabeth wind claims the two most recent American religious identification surveys, declare WCA one form of paganism as the fastest growing spiritual identification in America. The high holiday of wicca and paganism is Halloween. It finds its origin over 2000 years ago, with the Druids when it was believed that the boundary between this world and the underworld was thinner than usual, where the spirits could come into the world more easily, but not just any spirits. a supernatural race of spirits generally described as stunningly beautiful. But if they want They can also be terrible and hideous. According to Patricia Monahan, most scholars believed they were a degraded version of ancient gods. Also on this night, the souls of dead relatives were thought to visit the homes of all who celebrated The Holiday, The Holiday involved people going house to house in costume or in disguise, usually reciting verses or songs in exchange for food. It may have originally been a tradition whereby people impersonated the the souls of the dead and received offerings on their behalf. People Would set out soul cakes full of sweet fruit on out all hallows' Eve as an offering for the dead. This is where most believe we find the origin of trick or treat for all those good yummy candies. Americans, mostly Protestants did not celebrate this holiday for reasons of conviction, but as the cultural makeup changed. So did the celebration in the late 1800s and into the 19th and the 20th century,Halloween is branded as scary and spooky in the United States. but Let's contrast that with the day of the dead or DIA de Los Muertos festivities that take place over two days in an explosion of color and life affirming joy in Mexico and central and South America and growing around the world.This idea of engaging with the dead is not isolated to a few holidays. We see it in our literature, in our television shows and in our movies and kids are not excluded from this phenomenon. First, there was Casper. Now there's Coco. ThePixar film that was the number one film of all time in Mexico. It is one of the top 100 grossing films of all time. So what does the Bible say about this? Perhaps you care, perhaps you don't, but I at least think you, owe it to yourself to know what the Bible says about this idea of talking to the dead. Here’s one reason – nearly 2 billion people call themselves Christians in the world. Most of them believe the dead can make contact with us. Yet the bible says those who die, never return to the land of the living – but guess who it says do ? The fallen angels of heaven – to deceive. The gospel of Jesus is sin leads to death but I have died for you so that you can live forever. The gospel of Lucifer says sin is not that bad, live as you wish, death is the just the beginning. One we find in John 3:16 – the latter in Genesis 3:4. We are going to put a link to some more details on this idea in the comments below this video. Ok so Here’s another reason -  it's not the dead you're talking to. That's the most startling thing the Bible has to say about this topic. You are not talking to your dead relatives. According to the Bible, the dead sleep and await a resurrection. They don't have thoughts or feelings and they don't come back to talk to the living. If we go back to the beginning of the story, the first message shared by the fallen angel Lucifer was to Eve in a garden. And this was it. Eve, regardless of your actions, you'll never die. No matter what you do, you're going to live forever. This is where we get the idea that death is just a doorway into the next state of consciousness. But if this is true, this is a question we should ask ourselves, are we all saved? How does that make you feel? Everyone ends up being saved. Maybe that makes you feel good. Maybe that makes you wonder about that person that abused you. When you were a kid about Hitler, about people in the world that do what we call evil things. You mean they're going to be my neighbor in paradise without a standard by which people are determined to live in paradise or not. We have to ask ourselves, what is that standard?I don't like the idea of living next to Hitler in paradise. The reason this idea is so important is because it has so many ramifications. Are we judged ? If so by whom? are we all saved? Why would someone not be saved? If we die and pass on to the next life or paradise, then why not expedite the process? Why do we fight off death so much in this world? Why not let the sick die faster? Why don't we stop looking for cures to all these diseases? Why don't we get rid of things like life support.It's easy to play with this idea until you come face to face with it. 1st Samuel chapter 28. This is the story of a man who was King. he's in despair. There is an army gathering against his country against his kingdom. And in verse three, we read now Samuel had died. Everything changes when someone close to you dies and nothing can prepare you for it. All Israel had lamented for him and buried him in Ramah in his own city and saul, had put the mediums and the spiritists out of the land. These are key details. He had put them out and there's a reason for that.Saul Had followed God. And while he did, he had success. But the land was filled with the Philistines and their religion, like most heathen or pagan religions, like most all religions in the world today were built on the belief that the dead can come back and talk to the living that they can help foretell future events. If you had someone that could tell you what tomorrow may bring, you would absolutely want to know. Even if it meant they were coming back from the dead.. The gods of the old Testament were not just imaginary. Talking about these ‘gods’ David tells us the history of his people and the great sin of King Saul- They did not destroy the peoples, as the Lord commanded them, but they mixed with the nations and learned to do as they did. They served their idols, which became a snare to them. They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons; they poured out innocent blood (Psalm 106:34-38).the demons, the fallen angels, legion race were the gods of the old Testament and all these different gods were demons that somehow in some way had personified themselves. And then the people had made an idol after this demon. And if the angels are in the proportions that we read and legend says, they're extremely tall, 12, 16, 18 foot tall beings, and very Beautiful. (Deut 32:16-17). They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods; with abominations they provoked him to anger. They sacrificed to demons that were no gods, to gods they had never knownDeuteronomy 18 also tells us that they were sacrificing their children, Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10 that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God.This was profound. When I learned this concept that these weren't just ignorant people. They were worshiping beings with a ton of talent and skill and wisdom.Early Church leaders such as Justin Martyr and Tertullian held similar views (that the gods were actually demons).Why would ancient civilizations talk to these beings? We learn in 2 Kings 19:35 that one angel – one of these type of beings killed 185,000 soldiers in one night. You hear talk of generals from wars in our recent history who were communing with these same beings. Saul had followed God's word in the beginning and gotten rid of the mediums. The spiritists, the fortune tellers, the necromancers anyone that claimed to get truth from the deadSaul’s army – Israel is surrounded, death seems imminent – He’s terrified. And when Saul prayed, we are told the Lord did not answer him either by dreams or by Urim or by the prophets. Saul is looking for answers, what are we supposed to do. And sadly we learn that he had rejected God earlier in the story. Samuel's dead. He was the voice of God to Saul. When you lose someone close to you in your life, you instantly start looking for someone to talk to, especially if this person was close to you. When I lost my dad, I remember thinking, I would do anything to talk to him. I knew the biblical teaching of the dead. But for months and months after, I would have dreams about my dad. And it began to mess with my mind because I would see my dad in my dreams. We will spend more money escaping reality for a day than we did electing the leaders of the free world. There is a reason flu season coincides with Halloween with the amount of candy eaten in the next week. Halloween finds it origin over 2000 years ago with the Celts/Druids who called it Samhain, when it was believed that the boundary between this world and the underworld was thinner than usual. Where the spirits could come into the world more easily. But not just any spirits - the Eeesheee - a supernatural race of spirits. The aos sí are generally described as stunningly beautiful, though they can also be terrible and hideous. Impersonating these beings, or wearing a disguise, was also believed to protect oneself from them. It was a holiday of impersonation. It is celebrated over the course of a day. Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos festivities however, unfold over two or more days in an explosion of color and life-affirming joy in Mexico, in central and south America and growing around the world.The Day of the Dead originated several thousand years ago with the Aztec, Toltec, and other Nahua people, who considered mourning the dead disrespectful. For these pre-Hispanic cultures, death was a natural phase in life’s long continuum. The dead were still members of the community, kept alive in memory and spirit—and during Día de los Muertos, they temporarily returned to Earth.Then there is the altar. Where families put the favorite food of the family member and even toys the children because of their long journey. Often they will put marigolds leading the way back to the grave. This idea is not isolated to a few holidays. We see it in literature, in our television shows and in our movies and kids are not excluded.For Example - the Pixar film - Coco - the #1 film of all time in Mexico and one of the highest grossing films of all time is all about making the idea of talking to our dead loved ones as fun as the day of the dead portrays. What once was condemned we now pay to enjoy. So what does the Bible say about this idea of communicating with the dead? First off, it’s not the dead we are communicating with. According to the Bible the dead sleep and await a resurrection. They don’t have thoughts or feelings and don’t come back to talk to the living. So then who is it so many are talking to? The first message shared by the fallen angel Lucifer to Eve was “regardless of your actions, you won’t die” This is where we get the idea that death is just a doorway to the next state of consciousness. But if this is true, then are we all saved? Without a standard by which people are determined to live in paradise or not, are all saved? Do I have the joy of looking forward to living next to Hitler and other evil men in paradise? I don’t like that idea. The reason this idea is so important is because it has so many ramifications. Are we judged? By whom? Based on what? Are we all saved? Why would someone not be saved? If we die and pass on to the next life or paradise, then why not expedite that process? Why do we fight off death so much in the world, why not let the sick die faster, stop looking for cures to diseases, get rid of things like life support. It’s easy to play with this idea until you come face to face with it. BIBLE/STORY - Setting - 1 Samuel 28:3(Endor) - Saul had followed God and while he did he had success. The land was filled with the Phillistines and their religion which was built on the belief that the dead can come back and talk to the living…and that they can help foretell future events. Not many know that the great gods of the old testament were not just neat ideas, they were based on something. They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons; they poured out innocent blood (Psalm 106:34-38).We learn here that the gods of the old testament were actually demons.(Deut 32:16-17). They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods; with abominations they provoked him to anger. They sacrificed to demons that were no gods, to gods they had never knownDeut 18:9-12 - 9When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do according to the abominations of those nations. 10There shall not be found among you any one who maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or who useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12For all who do these things are an abomination unto the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee (KJV).Though Mosaic Law prescribed the death penalty to practitioners of necromancy (Leviticus 20:27What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? (1 Cor 10:20-22)Early Church Fathers such as Justin Martyr and Tertullian held similar views (that the gods were actually demons).——So just to be clear, the fallen angels are also known as demons. And the demons were what the majority of nations worshipped in the old world. Psalm 8:5 tells us man was made with lesser powers than the angelsHow powerful is one angel - we know from 2 Kings 19:35 - one angel killed 185,000 soldiers in one night. The Good news is that each of us has a guardian angel commissioned to be with us through our lives. Now if you have a full time bodyguard with superpowers, could it be that your life is threatened by an enemy? So Saul had gotten rid of Mediums, Spiritists,, fortunetellers - Necromancers as Deuteronomy commanded. 1 Samuel 28:3-6Saul is longing for answers. Notice verse 3 - Samuel has died. He was the voice of God to Saul. Have you ever lost someone close to you? You know this feeling of love being cut off suddenly. I have. A few years back I got a call that my dad had died in a car accident. Sudden. You think of the your last conversation. You think of the good times. You would do ANYTHING to talk to them again. Let me repeat that - You would do ANYTHING to talk to them again. I know the Bible teaching on the dead, yet for months and even years I would have dreams where I would see my dad, talk to him, even know he was dead yet everything in my being - in my dream - wanted to hug him, talk to him. Not until you lose someone and realize the power of love and loss do you begin to really understand the power of this doctrine of the devil - that death is a doorway to the next life. Did I think it was a good thought if my dad was looking down from heaven or up from hell at his family so sad without him? When we really think of death and the heresies that have come even into the church we have to realize why so many want nothing to do with God. Saul was desperate and he called for a medium. He knew better but he was would do ANYTHING to find answers.1 Samuel 28:7- 25——-Why address this today? Because if the Bible is true, then something is coming, a deception thousands of years in the making onto our planet. The most powerful medium - friends and family, who seem to come to us, look the same, sound the same, smell the same, and are here to comfort us and ‘warn us’ of coming danger. I can tell you everything in your soul will WANT TO BELIEVE these beings impersonating your loved ones. This is where faith and feeling will fight their greatest battle. The only thing telling you this is not real is Scripture and the truth that the dead know nothing (Eccl 9:5) and Job 7:9-10 - As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so one who goes down to the grave does not return. He will never come to his house again; his place will know him no more.1 Timothy 4:1 - The Spirit clearly says that in the last days some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.1 Timothy 4:3 - For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.as we learn this story of the battle between good and evil we learn that there are other worlds out there (Hebrews 11) we learn that 1/3 of the angels and their general are confined to this earth now.(Revelation 12) We learn that those beings from other worlds are not coming here to be contaminated by sin. Therefore we are under quarantine. Which means any discussion of aliens is a discussion of fallen angels visiting this planet. I know Hollywood has painted a picture that together if we unite we can fight the coming invaders, but the only invaders coming from outside of this planet are Christ and the unfallen angels at the second coming, because the fallen ones are already here. Demons - fallen angels - are organized, have special skills like filling someone with pride, anger, lust, rage, depression, despair, gluttony, resentment and the list goes on…The new testament is filled with examples of demon possession especially as Jesus walked the earth. In Mark 5:9 we learn of a man suffering possession and it is declared to be “Legion” when Jesus asked the name - the roman term for at least 5000 in a division of the army. We also learn in 2 Corinthians 11:14 that Lucifer - the fallen archangel of heaven is planning to personate christ before the true second coming. We also learn that the fallen angels are going to impersonate loved ones who have gone to sleep i.e. died. Why? Because this is the most powerful MEDIUM to sway someones belief system. I had a friend in elementary school who’s family had spoken to their dead daughter- his sister. There is NO. LET ME REPEAT. NO WAY to reason with someones apparent reality. They saw her, they spoke to her, and I was not going to convince them otherwise. The dead can appear to talk to the living, it’s just not the dead but demons masquerading as loved ones with the sole desire to deceive us. A friend recently shared a story about a boy in Africa. So answer #1 is that fundaments are the foundation of any strong, successful person.   2-These prosperity Pillars like the one we will discuss today are PROVEN OVER TIME to product results and are CONSTANTLY covered by some of the most successful nd prosperous people in the world in business, finances, relationships and life…   And 3- Most people haven't mastered them yet and that includes you and I…because life is constantly changing and you are constantly growing…   This is why i created the Daily Mastermind because Personal Growth is a DAILY EFFORT, not a weekend event effort or a once a month effort….ITS A DAILY EFFORT.   So, expect me to continue to hammer the fundamentals….Plus, If you are like me at all, you can hear the same thing over and over and one day it will catch you at the right time or be said the right way and it will lead to a break through in your life….guaranteed.     So, continue to focus on the fundamentals…PERIOD…   Now I know that comes out of left field a bit but i am certain that someone listening to this episode needed to hear that…I know I do from time to time.   So, lets get to the Hidden Benefits of PP#4.   I'm going to give you 7 specific and very valuable reasons that You MUST start surrounding yourself with Positive and YES, SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE ASAP….This is critical to you success and prosperity… Surrounding Yourself with Positive People Will   1-Bring you More Energy have you ever noticed how much energy comes in the room when someone positive walks in?  have you ever felt instantly more happy and positive around someone that fits this mold?…I have and this is the best resort o surround yourself with positive people.  Where there is energy and positivity, there is success…guaranteed.   2-Help you maintain a Positive Attitude being around Positive People make it very difficult to stay negative and or focused on the problems in your life.  Positive People bring solutions not excuses.  Positive people will inject a massive shot of shut the heck up and get to work, and sometime you need that in your life…especially when you dont want it in your life…am I right?  so, increase your attitude CONSITENTLY with positive people in you life.   3-Increase Your Belief ok, now this one is HUGE. I talk a lot about increasing your Belief to Create results in your life…well, being around Successful and Positive People will absolutely give you more Belief because of what we call Belief Transference.  The more your are around someone that creates results, the more you will see and belief the results are possible for you too.  We have all experienced this when we are around people that have done what we want to do ourselves.  so, when you surround yourself with positive and successful people you are indirectly building your own belief which is HUGE for accomplishing results...   4-Provide Unexpected Opportunity Now many of you have heard the saying the rich get richer or maybe you know someone that just seems to always be on top….well i'm here to tell you from experience that success attracts success and there is a universal law that governs this.  I am not going to try to explain all the reasons, but just as certain as the law of gravity say “what goes up must come down” there is universal laws that say “success attracts more success”.  So, when I have been around positive and successful people there is almost always opportunities that you can also become a part of .  Its happened to me time and time again and I promise that if you are consistent and committed the same will happen to you when the right people are in your life.   5-Allow you Access To Resources Tony Robbins talks about all problems being solved with either a need for Resources or Resourcefulness.  Lets assume (as members of the Mastermind Community) you are all incredibly resourceful and amazing entrepreneurs as I know you are…lol…but who couldn't use more resources at their disposal to create success in their lives? When you surround yourself with Positive and Successful People, you almost always have access to resources that will help you create and manifest your life.  For example, energy, masterminding, people, associations, contacts, connections and expertise are all just a few of the many resources that successful and positive people have to provide.  And we both know that most Positive People are giving and open with their time, energy and resources because they authentically WANT to help others…its a by product of being Positive.   6-Suffocate Negativity now I love this hidden benefit.  I've managed organizations and had companies with hundreds of employees and I can tell you that when you establish a CULTURE of positivity, the negativity gets suffocated.  No no one that is consumed in problems, anxiety, and depression wants to stay in the presence of Highly Positive people.  Either they slowly exit or disappear or they ironically become more positive.  So, if you are hoping to create boundaries and eliminate negativity in you life, sometimes the best way to do this is to just surround yourself with more positive people. It will instantly and effectively repel the negative in other people, in yourself and in your environment…trust me on this one.   And Finally….The 7th hidden benefit of Positive, Successful People is that it helps you... In this episode Coach Angie discusses the importance of working on your weak areas in marathon training so that you can become a stronger version of yourself. Plus we speak with an Australian runner who is mobilizing the running community to support those affected by the divesting bushfires. Working on Your Weak Areas The episode was inspired by something I read recently by Coach Jason Koop titled “Work on Your Ultrarunning Weaknesses This Winter.” The gist of it was that it’s important to work on your weak areas in the off season. The “off season” may not necessarily happen for you during the winter months but it’s important to step back from hard training for a period of time each year (especially if you’re a hard-driving Type A runner). The Off Season This year my “off season” was during the months of July and August. I didn’t stop running but I gave myself permission to just run for fun and include some other exercise activities into my schedule (more strength training, rowing). Then I had the drive and energy to come back in September and hit it hard in preparation for my fall running goals. We often don’t think about our weak areas until we’re in the thick of training and something is rearing its ugly head. Being proactive about getting stronger is basically about prevention. It’s far better to stay healthy than have to fight back from injury. There are numerous examples of what could be a weak area and this will vary from runner to runner. What Are Weak Areas? Rest-you skip rest days, race several times per year, and schedule each day full of workouts. Strength Training-you rarely if ever strength train and find that you don’t have the strength or stamina that you want. Maybe you’re very hard on yourself if you don’t perform how you want and look to running for the majority of your identity. Injury- you’ve had niggles or injuries popping up (or seem to get injured a lot). Pacing-you struggle with pacing your runs (you start out strong and dwindle down by the second half). Mental Strength- You psych yourself out before starting challenging runs or workouts, find that you “have” to walk at a certain point in long runs no matter your pace or effort level, or have a mental block at races. Nutrition- Maybe you’re having trouble dialing in your nutrition. You train hard but seem to undo some of your efforts by uncontrolled eating or not eating enough. These are just a few examples and there are even more areas I could mention. Deep down each of us probably know what our weak areas currently are. And it’s likely that if you don’t currently know the process of training for your goal race will reveal them. The good news is that you’re not alone. Here are some common weak areas . . .1. Rest If you’re a Type A person, have a busy life, and put a lot of pressure on yourself it’s likely that you’re not very good at resting. In modern life rest has been made to look like a weaknesses while overwork and stress have become badges of honor. People often complain about how busy they are and how little they sleep at night. Long term overwork and stress will do you physical, mental, and emotional harm in the long term. It’s important to reframe how you view rest to make it work for you. Start to look at rest as preventative medicine. This means you rest before you feel like you need to. If you wait until you’re exhausted it’s often hard to make up for lost ground. Reframe the concept of rest as enjoying the fruit of your labor. A good first step if you know that rest is something you need to work on is to schedule one rest day from training every week. Try to make that day as low key as you can to rest your body and mind. I consistently take one day off every week. Each runner’s rest day may be designed a bit differently but if you’re doing it right you should feel rejuvenated and ready to go the next day.One Rest Day Per Week If you recognize that you need to improve the quality and quantity of your sleep you may want to invest in a sleep tracker. This will give you some good data on how much you’re sleeping and any basic patterns that you have. There are various watches and devices (Coros Apex, Whoop, Oura Ring, etc) that will track the amount of sleep and types of sleep stages that you’re going through. Looking at this along with your resting heart rate (increases can indicate lack of recovery) and heart rate variability (HRV) will determine if your body is resetting and adapting to your training.Improving Sleep Quality There are many things that you can do to improve your sleep. These include keeping your sleeping environment dark (consider blackout curtains and a sleep mask), cool, quiet (or use a white noise/sound machine), stop using screens at least an hour before bedtime to block the amount of blue light, dim your environment or wear blue blocking glasses 2-3 hours before bed, avoid working out at least 1-2 hours before you want to go to sleep, avoid caffeine 8 hours before bedtime if you’re sensitive to caffeine, and try to get into a regular sleep schedule.2. Strength The fact is that none of us have perfectly balanced bodies. Even professional athletes have to regularly work on their strength. Most of us tend to be too sedentary in daily life and even if you’re a runner a large amount of sitting isn’t good for you. Posture and muscle strength tends to suffer the more we sit. Signs that you need to work on your strength including dealing with niggles or injuries, fading toward the end of a workout or race, and dealing with chronic discomfort like back pain. The solution to improving your strength may include working with a PT for those with current injuries, working with a strength coach if you’re not sure what to do, or being more consistent about implementing a regular strength training program. A couple years ago I paid for several sessions with a strength coach so that we could develop a routine to address my weaknesses and so that they could watch my form. If you’re just starting out with weight training it’s important to begin with good form habits before you begin loading on the weight. When it comes to strength you don’t need to set aside a huge chunk of time every day to improve. You may need to schedule in a 30-40 minute strength session once a week along with smaller chunks of strength work 1-2 times per week. Build it into Your Routine You can incorporate strength work in smaller burst that fit into your day. This will depend on your activity level and type of job. It may include things like getting up every hour from your desk for some movement (walking, push ups, plank, squats, hand stands, a few yoga movements) or pairing core work with watching TV or listening to an audiobook. You can even do exercises while you brush your teeth (I do one leg exercises like hip abduction movements every night).3. Nutrition This is an area where a lot of us struggle. I’ve mentioned before that I’m very disciplined in the area of exercise but tend to easily fall apart when it comes to nutrition. One of the consistent messages you’ll hear about improving your running performance has to do with nutrition. Many runners are under-fueling their bodies and not taking in the needed amount of macros to maintain and build muscle and keep the bones healthy. This can be from disordered eating, a desire to lose weight, or simply from being so busy that they forget to prioritize eating. Natalie, my nutrition coach, says that most women she works with are afraid to eat more. They sometimes view food as the enemy rather than a way to give them strength and energy to achieve their goals. Some runners use their training as an excuse to party it up in the food department and eat whatever they want. Then they’re frustrated that they’re not making improvements in their speed or body composition goals. It can be a tough balance because food should be enjoyable. A lot of activities are based around food and drink and it can be easy to get caught up in tons of “special” food moments. When you add up celebrating people’s birthdays, post-race indulgences, eating out, and holidays it’s no wonder why people struggle with making progress in this area. Nutrition can be an area where seeking help and accountability is important. If you recognize signs of disordered eating in your life you owe it to yourself to reach out for help. It can be a scary process of realizing you need to change but the dividends are rewarding. A perfect time to dial in your nutrition and fueling is in the off season so that when you start your training plan you have a proven system in place. You’re only going to get the best out of yourself if you’re truly honoring your body and giving it the nutrition that it needs.4. Mindset We all have areas where we lack confidence and we’re often the hardest on ourselves. We may struggle with fixed mindsets (or untrue thought loops) that we accept as true. Some of these mindsets have been part of our lives for years and they can be tough to change. It takes true intentionality to challenge negative thoughts and substitute more helpful ones in their place. Focusing on gratitude is a key way to change your mindset. It’s a lot tougher for negative thoughts to intrude when you’re listing things you’re thankful for. Gratitude Written and verbal affirmations are also powerful. These should be personal to your situation and goals. Examples could be “I am strong, I am confident, I am a marathoner.” It’s not easy to work through a lack of confidence but you’ll notice that success builds upon success. When you keep promises to yourself you build a stronger positive identity. Another aspect of building mental strength for running is deciding to enjoy the process of training. We often focus so much on the destination (finish line) but we often learn the most on the journey. If you’re looking to running to find self acceptance then at some point you’ll be let down. You can’t PR every race and there will always be someone who is faster or running farther. Basing a large percentage of your identity on running can let you down. If you struggled mentally during your last training cycle or race the off season can be a great time to read good books and listen to podcasts on mindset. Identity If you deal with negative thoughts and feelings that resist your efforts to change consider working with a trained therapist, sports psychologist, or counselor. Sometimes we need a coach for our mind. Good books to consider that will help you build mental strength include “Peak Performance” by Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness, “Mind Gym” by Gary Mack, and “Let Your Mind Run” by Deena Kastor, 5. Consistency The best results come to those who are consistent over time. This is true in whatever field you’re trying to succeed in. If you’re not a Type A runner then consistency with your training is probably something that you struggle with. Consistency doesn’t mean that you’ll race year round or push yourself to the max every single day. However, it does mean that you develop strategies and habits to stay healthy and in shape year round. This will involve maintaining a solid running base year round and not going from zero to sixty between the off season and your training cycle. A large percentage of running injuries happen when people jump into training without a solid running base. If you go from haphazardly running a few times a month into a marathon training plan chances are it won’t go well. If you struggle with staying in a routine and staying motivated (where you’re prone to yo-yo training) it’s important to find a community to support you and give you accountability to stick with your goals. Consistency can also be developed by changing your mindset. If you start to see yourself as a runner then you’ll identify with the actions of being a runner. If you identify as a fit and healthy person then you’ll want to take the actions that will keep you fit and healthy. Sometimes we struggle with lack of consistency through no fault of our own. Maybe you went through a period of injury and have to start back from scratch. Maybe you’ve had a serious illness or surgery that required off time. Maybe you’re pregnant or just had a baby and are facing the process of rebuilding your running base. In these instances consistency will require that you start back slowly and gradually. In your mind you may be someone who runs a certain pace, can comfortably go a certain distance, or has particular race finish times. But if your body is not in the same place where it used to be then you have to honestly address what your weaknesses are and make a plan that starts where you are. It can be frustrating to feel like you’ve lost ground but being kind to yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally is the best path to getting back to where you want to be.Take Action Even the most amazing runner has things they need to work on to be at the top of their game. Here are three steps to help you take action. Acknowledge your weak areas (and we all have them). Denial doesn’t do us any favors and won’t be productive to creating the change we want to see. People aren’t going to judge you for having weak areas because everyone has them. If you find that someone is judgmental their judgment is saying more about them than it is about you. Judgment is a mirror, not a window. Usually we’re the hardest on ourselves. Acknowledging your weak areas starts by listing any areas you’ve struggled in during the last year. Recognize when you can’t go it alone. My first tendency is to try and fix things myself. But it’s okay and positive to ask for help. We can’t know everything or be able to fix all our weaknesses alone. Maybe you’ve tried to change and address your weak area before but haven’t made the progress you wanted. Maybe you started out strong and then gave up when you hit a wall with the issue. Whether you’re struggling with injury, your mental strength, knowing how to appropriately push yourself, or your eating habits there are people who have been down the same road before. It’s important to reach out and let others help you find solutions. It’s not a weakness to need accountability and advice. Develop a Plan. Once you’ve identified your weak area(s), figured out what you need to do to find solutions, and sought help if you need it you’ll need an intentional plan. It’s good to have a big goal or long-term perspective but we need to break it down into practical application. This practical application will consist of things that you do on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. For Example . . . Maybe you’ve dealt with chronic injuries or gait problems. You’ve identified that the problem is a lack of strength and that you need a rehab plan to rebuild your body stronger than ever. For a couple of years I dealt with high hamstring issues, especially during the later miles of a marathon. It got so bad at one point that it was painful to sit for any length of time. I finally recognized that my glutes were weak and that was why my hamstrings were taking over and dealing with increased strain. I started doing regular glute strengthening exercises, avoided over-stretching my hamstrings, and eventually the issue subsided. Now I’m religious about doing lower body strength work and my hamstrings are much happier. I recommend that you not skip leg (or glute) day because runners are notorious for having weak glutes and this can cause problems down your kinetic chain. If you recognize that you don’t know what to do to rehab your problem area it’s probably time to reach out for help. If you know what injury/issue you constantly deal with then you could use something like The Resilient Runner program developed by PT Ben Shatto. If you’re not sure what the underlying issue is then you’ll want to find a qualified sports medicine professional to help you diagnose the problem. If you’re not sure who to see get recommendations from other runner friends or your local running store. You don’t necessarily want to see someone who doesn’t have experience with runners because their solution may be “just stop running.” Be an advocate for yourself if you’re dealing with an injury and don’t be afraid to see a second opinion. We’d encourage you to take inventory at the beginning of this year and identify any areas you want to work on. It could be including more intentional rest, building better strength, dialing in your nutrition, developing a stronger mindset, or being more consistent. It’s not easy to change but if you acknowledge your weak areas, build a support system, and are intentional you’ll become a stronger person (in both running and life). Welcome to Episode 22 of Real Estate Mastery - How To Create A Life That Doesn’t Require Your Presence.    In this episode, I wanted to discuss something I saw in a short video recently, and that is how to set yourself apart from the competition. I’ve talked about it before in other podcasts and I will continue to do so as I believe it is one of the most important aspects of doing business.    Adding Value   In the real estate industry, there is competition coming at you from all angles. With discount brokers and iBuyers entering the arena, you have to do something to help yourself stand out. If you are listing a house and your client asks what you charge and all you can say is 6-7%, you are at a disadvantage. They may ask others who will say 6-7% but will also say something after that shows how they add value for that 6-7%. By spelling out the benefits and letting people know what sets you apart, you will find yourself with the advantage. In my business, the agents on my team are always striving to add value to our offers so that they stand out from other agents the seller may be talking to.    For Example…    If I am buying a house, I will be sure to let people know that…    We handle closing We will clean up anything you leave behind You pick the closing date  We can give you time in your current house even after we buy it   Other companies may offer the same price or even some of the same benefits, but by listing those benefits and showcasing their value, our offers will often stand out.    Standing Out   This year I have been looking at ways to set my business apart from the competition. It is an evolving process that you should always be thinking about. All agents can list houses on the MLS, getting the listings sent to third-party sites like Zillow. If an agent only has one solution, to list and market, that can put them at a huge disadvantage. Having a resource that can buy houses directly is a huge benefit. It may not help in every situation but it can be the best solution for some home sellers. An agent can share the benefits and downfalls of listing, such as showings, cleaning, and wasted time. They can also share with them the pros and cons of a direct sale, ensuring that they are able to provide the best solution for the seller's particular situation.    My message for today is how we can build more value for our clients and customers? This Podcast Is Episode Number 0329, And It Will Be About Ways Your Construction Company Can Spend More Now And Save You Money Long-Term During my lifetime, I have seen too many contractors work hard, never have enough money to retire. Some of them die from exhaustion, and others just wore themselves out and lived their final years in poverty and only a few, less than 5% ever made enough money from owning and operating their construction company and outside investments to retire early enough and enjoy a comfortable lifestyle.   This article is a bit strong, and it could offend some folks. If it offends you, please accept my sincere apologies. I tend to tell it straight and not sugar coat anything because I have been involved in the construction industry most of my life beginning with working in my Step Father's construction company after school in the mid-1960s.   In an attempt to save money, the cheap contractor ends up spending the most money and earning a tiny profit because they believe in maximizing than optimizing. In the short run, maximizing can payoff; however, in the long term, it never does. Here are four ways you can spend more now and save money in the long-term: Vehicle If you stock your truck with every tool you think you may need, and load it to the sky with all the parts and inventory you think you may need, and drive hard and fast you are maximizing that resource, and that is not a good thing. Benefit - Hopefully, fewer trips to the supply house, Lowe's, Home Depot, or other places which will save you a little bit of time and money. Costs - You will end up spending more money for each mile you drive because you use more fuel, your brakes will wear out faster from having to stop with more weight. Your tires will wear down quicker, and your vehicle suspension parts will need to be replaced sooner rather than later. You will have money that is tied up in tools, equipment, and inventory that could be invested elsewhere and make more money for you. Even worse, if you have any credit card debt or loans that money could be used to pay them down and reduce your interest expense. Risks - If you're involved in a traffic collision and the investigation reveals that you have exceeded the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of your truck or van then it is likely your insurance may not cover the damages. Besides, you may be liable for negligence charges. We recommend you contact your insurance agent and your attorney for their advice. Spend the money and choose the right vehicle for your needs. It should match the needs of your company without putting yourself and your business at risk. Tools And Equipment Construction workers who take pride in their work produce better results with fewer repairs if they have quality tools and equipment. Cheap tools and equipment cost a lot of time and money that you cannot see - out-of-sight means out-of-mind. See the chart below:      For Example - Your best construction worker asks for a tool: It costs $1,200.00 It will save ten minutes a day in labor It will last 3 years The standard response is the company can't afford it!  QuickBooks Desktop Most contractors try to make QuickBooks Online work - that is a recipe for disaster. QuickBooks Online is an excellent product for many companies, but not for construction. The primary reason is that contractors are one of the few companies that pack their entire company into trucks and vans and drive it to their customer's location. Then they put together a custom-built product which means the margin for error is enormous, and break-even calculations are a moving target and can only be done in a properly Setup QuickBooks File Designed Specifically For Construction Accounting. QuickBooks Desktop Version has been around since 1991, and it has improved at a stable pace that contractors and accountants can keep up with. For the past several years our contractor clients have enjoyed having access to the tried and true QuickBooks Desktop version in a Cloud environment. QuickBooks Online is a great program for small companies including some non-profit organizations, but it is not suited for a serious construction contractor with more than two projects a month and generating more than $500 a year in sales. Most construction companies started using QuickBooks Online, so they could get to their QuickBooks Pro or QuickBooks For Contractors file anywhere they have internet access 24/7. So, this morning’s preaching text may seem a bit unusual.It comes from 2 Kings, chapter 6,And is a miracle performed by Elisha for one of the Company of Prophets that were under Elisha.Now first, who is this Company of Prophets?Well, scholars believe there were schools of Prophets and they sat under a major Prophet,For Example, in 1 Samuel, there was a school of Prophets that sat under Samuel.And we read in 2 Kings - there were schools of Prophets in Bethel, and Jericho.And before Elijah was taken up to heaven, two different schools of prophets (one from Bethel, and one from Jericho),Told Elisha that Elijah would be taken from him that very day.And once Elijah was taken, and Elisha proved himself, That school of Prophets then sat under Elisha.Now that you have the quick and dirty history of this School of Prophets,Listen again to 2 Kings 6:1-7.Ok - so what is going on here?Well, The Company of Prophets say to Elisha, ‘look, it's too cramped for us here.Let’s go to the Jordan and build better lodgings.And Elisha said go, or do so.The word for ‘go, or do so’ here is “lechu”,And it means - “go, and I’m not going with you”See, Elisha didn’t approve of, or agree with this plan of theirs.Elisha didn’t see anything wrong with their current situation,And thought it a bit ‘showy’ to need bigger space.But one of them, in Hebrew the word “haechad” - which literally means ‘the one’,So probably the senior student, or senior prophet under Elisha,Pleaded with Elisha to go with them.Elisha relented, but wasn’t happy about it.So they arrive at the Jordan and begin chopping down trees,When the “haechad” - or the one,Has his axe head fall into the river.Now this had to take place on a back swing or come off when he hit the tree.And it landed in the river…in the Jordan river.Now, let’s pause here for a minute…The Jordan river…A few weeks ago we looked at Naaman, the Syrian general who came to Elisha to be healed of leprosy,And Elisha told him to go wash in the Jordan.The Jordan is a very spiritual place in the Hebrew faith.A place of spirituality that is disconnected from the everyday life of regular people.So, moving to the Jordan was also seen as a way to separate the prophets even more from the lives of the people.And Elisha didn’t agree with that.Elisha also believed the Jordan to be sacred,And their intrusion on it as a living place would diminish that.Now, if they hadn’t come to the Jordan and started chopping down trees,Then the axe head never would have fallen in the river.It would have fallen on the ground and a miracle would not have been needed to retrieve it.So, back to the axe head in the river.The word used for the person that lost the axe head is the same as before ,For the primary student - “haechad”.So the same guy that pleaded with Elisha, now pleads with him again.The “haechad” now cries out to Elisha for help because he had borrowed the axe head.At this time, you couldn’t just go to the store and buy an axe head like you can now.These things had to be made and weren’t inexpensive.So someone had trusted this guy with th

The data shows that content posted on Sundays see the lowest amount of engagement on Facebook. - On Instagram, the highest engagement tends to occur on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am to 11am. - This is surprising to see that the most people are not checking their social feeds during their morning commute or after work. - On Twitter, Wednesday and Friday win again although it is the 9am slot instead of mid-morning. - Tweets also see less engagement after 10pm - LinkedIn’s engagement statistics have seen a significant increase overall. This makes it a harder decision of when to post, but also allows for more options. - We do see a spike in engagement from 8am to 10am, then a drop at 11am, then back up from 12pm to 3pm. Join us as we talk about Conventions and one of my favorite hobbies, Cosplay! Tutorial: Conventions Two major types:Industry – Put on by or for the purpose of the industry to promote their products, More about selling you on something or getting you hyped for it.Fan – Put on primarily by fans or major groups to celebrate/support the products, more about getting people together who are all interested in a product. Not mutually exclusive, there are Industry that have elements of Fan Conventions, while Fan conventions have elements of Industry. Anime is an example of Fan convention with Industry there to help promote the convention.Video Game is an Example of Industry convention that will certainly have Lots of Fans, and some fan aspects to it. Things you find at a convention:Exhibition Halls • Common at all Major Conventions but differ depending on the type of convention o Industry is more about selling you on products for the future or right then. For Example: Video Game convention is about getting you hyped to buy video games. o Fan is more about commerce of good from that industry/product. It is a viable way of making a living. Interaction:1) Always ask permission to interact with a Cosplayer, whether taking a picture, saying “hi”, or wanting to touch, hug, or act with a Cosplayer; someone might have a reason to say ‘No’ and deserve the chance to say such.2) A Cosplayer is inhabiting a character, they are not that character. Therefore, you can not presume they know everything about a character or will react the same as the character would.3) Cosplay =/= Consent. Harrassment is never okay. Just because someone is dress scantily does not mean they are asking for indecent interactions. Cons take this very serious.4) Do not monopolize cosplayer’s time. If you have a question or want to discuss something, ask if it’s okay, as some people may not always want the conversations.5) Don’t linger. Some people are super sensitive to other people watching them. Try to be considerate of those Cosplaying6) Ask for Handles. If you take a picture and going to post it online, you might want link back to the original cosplayer. I recently wrote a post about the coming Revenue Sharing model for Microsoft Business Applications ISV's. As expected, there is some screaming going on about forking over some of your revenue to Microsoft. But there is another side of that story... what Microsoft will be doing in return. Recap Starting soon Microsoft will be moving to a pay-to-play model for ISVs. The first reaction I am hearing from many ISVs are various "avoidance" schemes. Remember, this only applies to SaaS products. Since all of these SaaS products are hosted by Microsoft, and they have all the telemetry they want, you really will be challenged to find a way to avoid Revenue Sharing. It is not an "Optional" program. Though for the time being, you can still "side-load" your solutions, Microsoft will easily discover them. When they do, if you are not part of the program, according to Guggs, "If your solution is not on Appsource, we will tell customers not to use it --- we will get very "pointy" with this message over time". I can't think of any intelligent customer who would not heed this warning, so I suggest you drop your "avoidance" plans. Instead, focus on the promised benefits, and maximizing those. Benefits Depending on where you fall, you have several "levels" of benefits across three buckets: Technical, Marketplace and Sales. I'll share the slide first, and then we can unpack these. Understand that these are subject to change, it is a lever Microsoft can use to increase engagement. Starting Level Let's start at left most column, which is the minimum required "non-optional" option. When you publish a Bizapp solution to AppSource, and you commit to 10% as part of that process, this is what you will get, even without selling anything yet: Architectural Consultation. This is a one-on-one consultation with Microsoft. Unfortunately, you don't get this benefit until after you have published, and it probably would have been handy to have beforehand, but I can also see how Microsoft does not want to waste time with tire-kickers either. Training Vouchers. It is not clear how many of these you get, but without a specific ISV Competency anymore, they don't seem like a related benefit, but... they're not worthless. Customer Surfaced Certification. Seems all solutions will have that by default, in order to even be published. Access to ISV Studio. Ok, now we are getting somewhere.. potentially. We are in the Pilot group to help MS figure out what this can/will be. MS mentions Insights and diagnostics, which are important, and we have been missing that, but I think there is more that can be done behind a name like "ISV Studio". Time will tell, but I would keep an eye on this one. The above are all listed as "Technical Benefits", and you may notice that they are the same across all levels. This is where I expect whatever they are planning to do around IUR will probably be differentiated. Today, the differentiations between levels are really around Marketing, (Sales does not kick in until later), so let's take a look at the minimum Marketing Benefits Marketplace Listing Optimization. This is not "prioritization", it is "optimization", but it is important to understand how solutions are surfaced in AppSource so that your wonderful app is not sitting on page 26. This will include a quick consult with the MS Enablement Team, and will become more programmatic down the road. Think, built-in recommendations against what you have done, surfacing Best Practices suggestions. Marketplace Blog/Newsletter/Social. This should not be your entire "Marketing Program". It is a one-time "blast", but can be quite valuable if you time it right, and amplify it yourself through your own social channels. The $50K Club Once your app has generated $50K USD of revenue sharing fees, which is actually $500K of ISV revenue, in a rolling 12 months, you move up the the $50K Club. This is no small feat, if your solution sells for $10/Month/User, you would need to have sold about 4,200 seats. Again the technical benefits, for the moment, are the same. But you do get additional Marketing Benefits, in addition the the entry level benefits, including: Customer Story. This is a basic customer success story that you can create from Microsoft Templates, and submit for publication here. Again, you will want to amplify this with your social channels, but it is a nice "credibility" builder. Sales Enablement. This is a one-on-one workshop with one of the Microsoft vendors who specialize in helping partners build a sales engine. This goes beyond just AppSource and into your entire potential customers' lifecycle. It seems pretty extensive. P2P Consultation. If you are thinking about selling via other partners, this is a roughly 90 minute consultation on how to approach building a channel. Marketplace Category Promo. At the top of each category in AppSource is a rotating gallery of featured apps. Once you join the $50K Club you will be added to this rotation. I would not expect you to show up more than once, and probably for no more than a week. So again, an opportunity to socialize it and direct customers to it, during the time you are sitting at the top of the category page. Social Selling Coaching Program. I have mentioned socializing several of these things so far, to amplify their value. This benefit is a specific, significant one-on-one workshop to show you exactly how to do this whole "socializing" thing. The $250K Club Once your app has generated $250K USD of revenue sharing fees, you have the option to "opt-in" to the 20% revenue sharing model, but you don't have to. Understand that this means you will have sold $1.25 million USD of ISV revenue, which for your $10 solution, means about 10,500 seats. The air is starting to get thinner here, and the numbers of ISVs in this category will be smaller. But if you do get there, you will not only get additional Marketing Benefits, but you will activate the  Sales Benefits. The additional Marketing Benefits include: Co-Sell Ready Content. As part of the Co-Sell on-boarding process, you will have the opportunity to add to your seller catalog listing, Seller-Facing content, including one-pagers on your company and application, as well as a Customer Story. These are useful for MS Sellers to better understand what you are solving for, and when and where to position your solution with one of their customers. Mini-Commercial. This is a 30 video in this format. You can add this video to your AppSource listing, and of course. promote it through your social channels. PR Support. This would be a Microsoft distributed press release, that could include a quote from a key Microsoft person who would be relevant to your application. Here is an example. Again, you would be advised to amplify this release with your own social channels. P2P Readiness Workshop. For those ISVs planning on building a reseller channel, this is a much deeper dive than the previous P2P Consultation. It is an extended one-on one virtual workshop, and includes not only readiness, but also introductions to potential resellers. Marketplace Home Page Promo. As a member of the $250K Club, you will also get a spot in the rotation in the gallery for the entire marketplace, versus just your category at the $50K level. You will want to double-down on the social amplification of this as again, you will only sit there for a limited time. However, if you are blowing the doors off with your solution, you may find yourself regularly appearing here. In addition, this level kicks in the Sales Benefits, which are the same as at the top level, so I will cover those below. The $750K Club Let's say you somehow sold $3.75 Million dollars of ISV revenue, which for a $10 app, would mean that you miraculously sold about 31,250 seats. I think it is clear that there are only a handful of these ISVs, and maybe not even a whole hand. But you three will also get some additional Marketing Benefits, that include: P2P Workshop - in person. At this stage you will have already had a couple of consults and workshops on channel building. This takes that up yet a notch further as an in-person workshop at your office. This is going to get very pointy on your specific goals and requirements. Secret Shopper. A Microsoft vendor, who specializes in sales motions, will anonymously go through your entire sales process, including any sales doorways. They will come back with frank suggestions on where your sales process is either failing, or could be improved. Tele-sales campaign(s). Most of us are familiar with N3, they are one of Microsoft's key vendors for a lot of things. Working with your team, N3 will craft and execute a telesales campaign for your solution. You can target end customers or resellers depending on where you want to create new traction. Telesales campaigns are notoriously hit or miss. It is probably the most overt form of marketing that there is. N3 has been around the block on this, and will no doubt know better than you how to get the most from it. Global Expansion. If you are kicking ass in your region, Microsoft will be eager, possibly even more eager than you are, to spread your ass kicking solution around the globe. Globalization is more than just flipping a switch in AppSource. You will need to deal with the technical side, like localization, but also the introduction to the regional teams in these new geos that may not have any idea what an ass-kicker you are. Microsoft will facilitate this for you. P2P Lead Gen Webinar. Webinars are another tool for building a channel, and Microsoft will facilitate and promote a webinar for you, under their brand targeted at relevant resellers. You will want to drive additional attendance with your social channels. Seller Webinar. These are fun, I have done a couple of them, including one a few weeks ago. This is an Internal-facing webinar that MS Sellers are invited to. This is an excellent opportunity to talk directly to the MS sellers about how your solution will make them more successful. This is less about customer benefits and more about helping the sellers solve their own challenges. So angle it accordingly. These are recorded and added to a library that the sellers can access for on-demand replays. Sales Benefits Once you cross the $250K mark, and you opt-in to the 20% program, you activate the Microsoft Sales Benefits that include: Prioritized Listing. You can be listed of course without being in the $250K Club. But on the MS Internal Sellers view of the catalog, those that opt into the 20% program will be listed at the top. But it's actually more relevant that the sellers will be keenly aware, that if they sell one of these solutions, they will get paid. This is the primary the reason for the additional 10%... to create the incentives to motivate the Sellers to move your product. Think about something like CPQ where there are a few ISV solutions. While the Seller will be able to see all of them, the ones in the 20% category will have a golden glow around them. Obviously, Sellers are going to move forward with one of those first. Co-Selling Support from MS Field Teams. The field teams consist of AEs (Account Executives), SSPs (Solution Sales Professionals) and TSPs (Technical Sales Professionals). An enterprise level customer may have several SSPs assigned to them for different products, like for example, a specific SSP for Business Applications. Tethered to an SSP is a TSP, and together they are the primary force looking to sell Business Applications into their enterprise customer accounts. It is these SSP/TSP combos that you will want to engage with to bring you into these big deals. This is of course assuming that your solution is designed for enterprise customers. Up until now, they received quota reduction for the value of your ISV solution when they brought you in. That was nice, but it's not the same as money in their hands, which they will get from selling the 20% solutions. This is not a guarantee that your solution will be sold in huge numbers... or at all. For many solutions, this path will not actually do anything. In that case you would have to look to the Marketing Benefits to justify your 20%, or maybe you opt back into the 10% tier. Or maybe you did not see enough value, and never opted into the 20% tier in the first place. Regional Account planning with MS field teams. This one is a two-edged sword. You can work directly with the teams to plan how you are going to pursue targeted Enterprise customers together, which is great. But my experience with Account Planning has been that it also creates a reporting burden on your side. Not an issue if it works. A final point on Co-Selling. Microsoft is aligned strategically to industry verticals. SSP/TSP teams are not only targeting particular horizontal solutions like "Business Applications", but they are also segregated vertically along industry lines. For Example, "Business Applications in Healthcare Sector" would be a specific charge of an SSP/TSP team. In addition, depending on the size of the industry, the teams may be geographically bound also, ie. "Business Applications in Healthcare Sector for US East". Basically, there are a lot of people you would ultimately want/need to engage with. Needless to say, horizontal Solutions and "widget" solutions are probably not a good fit for Co-Selling, as should be obvious from what I wrote above. So this was a long post and I am sorry for that. To add to that, everything I wrote above is subject to change as the program rolls out. It may change a little, or it may change a lot, but as I opened with, this side of the program is a lever that Microsoft can easily adjust. For ISVs that are confused, worried, mad or acronym challenged, I am part of another consulting group called PowerISV with four other MVPs who may be able to help.

Let’s do this! If you look at a lot of the funnels that we create around low-end free plus shipping products…   For example, A BOOK.   A lot of times, a funnel starts with a physical product and then progresses to digital products as the funnel continues.   There's a VERY good reason for this strategy, and that's what I wanna teach you about here because...   It's one of the easiest ways to:   Create a lot of income very quickly Get a lot of eyeballs/ customers that are very excited Get a lot more money in the door than your spending on ads   PHYSICAL PRODUCT VS  DIGITAL PRODUCTS   There’s a beneficial relationship between physical and digital products, (and to state the obvious) they're not the same and they don't serve the same purpose.   My point is that whether you're in the e-com or the info product space, adding some products from the other side of the fence is one of the fastest ways to get A LOT of extra cash in your pocket…   I’m gonna ask you a few questions here:   Q: What's the benefit of an info product?   A: We did the numbers on my info products, and they have like a 98% margin. The margin is huge. *HUGE* (all caps)   Q: What's the benefit of a physical product?   A: It's tangible. It can be touched. The Perceived Value is High. Your customer’s mind will be getting the anticipaton of a dopamine hit as soon as they place their order. “I'm gonna hold it soon.” “Oh, imagine what it's gonna be like whan I have...” “What'll it feel like using it …. doing it…. driving the vehicle…” (whatever it is the thing is).   Physical products have a gigantic emotional advantage over digital. However, it's the exact opposite when it comes to the margins.   Info Products = very low perceived value.   Why?   The perceived value of an info product is typically low because the customer knows that it just takes an email to fulfill it...and it's probably already made.   So while the perceived value of your info products is inherently low, the margins are huge. BUNDLE YOUR PRODUCTS   On all of my webinars, I ALWAYS ship an awesome physical product EVEN THOUGH it's mostly a digital thing. When people show up they get a t-shirt. I do the exact same thing at my live event too.    There's a physical thing that they're gonna be able to:   See Hold Touch Taste   …(whatever it is), actually in existence.   BUT...   My actual profit comes from INFO… because it cost almost nothing to fulfill on.   A lot of times, on free plus shipping offers, we lead with a physical product…   For Example, A Book:   Low Cost Low Price High Circulation High Perceived Value   Here’s another question for you…   Q: With all the upsells, what have you noticed?   A: They're mostly all info!   Sometimes we’ll do MP3 players and things like that, but usually NOT. It's usually straight info.   We know that a percentage of people will buy.   After the first “Yes,” the second “Yes” is so easy... waaay easier.   So don't mess around with the first “Yes.”   Get the first “Yes” quickly by selling the high perceived value product that's (a lot of times) physical.   ADDING PERCEIVED VALUE   So a lot of times, in my offers, I’ll add a physical product to increase perceived value.     My Funnel Stash, I ship out a whole bunch of stuff; even though most of it's digital.   For Secret MLM Hacks, I ship out a lot of stuff when people buy … even though it's mostly digital.   That’s a huge hack to the game right there. It’s MASSIVE.   So with your info product, I would bundle up a whole bunch of physical stuff to increase perceived value.   Q: But how do you use info products to increase the perceived value of a physical product?   A: By answering the questions the arise from the purchase of your product.   For Example:   What questions would you have if you bought a whole lot of healthy chocolate? (Besides, Am I kidding myself?”) ;-)   “How do you keep it?” “How much can I eat?” Different recipes   So what if you had a whole bunch of info products that explained that?   And guess what?   You don’t even have to make the info products yourself!   Instead, just interview people who love making fake chocolate recipes and have them create a video for you. It scratches their back and it scratches yours.   You could go interview a few health coaches, and have them add in their stuff... and BAM! $197 upsell that’s just boosted your average cart value like crazy!   You’ve created a high perceived value thing, (not as high as physical), but MASSIVE margins on the backend.   I do that a lot now for that exact reason.   ADDING MORE VALUEThe relationship between physical and digital is something that I'm always looking at when I'm creating offers.   There wasn't a lot of stuff I had to add to my 30 Days offer to make the perceived value go sky high after I added in my OfferMind Event. Why?   A physical event created HUGE perceived value! Waaay more than a 100 bucks the offer cost…   I didn't have to go add in all this other stuff…   Stack Stack Stack Stack Stack   ...just to boost the perceived value!   I could tell from the comments. People were like; “Oh my gosh, a two-day event!” I couldn't even read them fast enough.   In an hour there were 700 views that had been shared like all over the place. I was like, “Sweet, you all just marketed for me!” Dunso, right!   The product wasn’t made at the time, but it still increased the perceived value.   I'm ALWAYS looking to see what perceived value/ perceived relationships I can leverage.   SELLING WITH BULLET POINTS   Q: How much sales copy is on Amazon?   A: Like, NONE!   There are bullet points, but there's no sales letter on Amazon. Why? Because Perceived value is huge: “I'm gonna hold it. It’s gonna show up in the mail.”   Anticipation is a huge tool.   That two-day free shipping! It’s just short enough to increase anticipation and just long to bother you…. You know it's coming and that ten bucks for the jump rope starts to play with your mind...   You're like, “I can imagine myself. Mm-hmm, I'm Rocky, baby!”  And you totally mess with your identity.   You start justifying the purchase to yourself because of who you want to be…   “I'm Steve Larson. I've got a beard, baby. I'm tough!”   We all do that with every product we buy...   And your customer wants that experience when they buy your product too.   So when you look at the relationship between perceived value, price, and actually holding, tasting, and anticipation that it will show up.   Your customer wants the excitement.*GIVE IT TO THEM*   PRODUCT MARKETING JCPENNEY STYLE   JCPenney is one of my favorite case studies ever. It's one of my favorites from College.   The guy who created the Apple store and the genius lab was hired by JCPenney’s.   The Apple store was such a huge hit, and JCPenney’s were like, “Holy crap! What if our store experience was more like what Apple’s got going on?”   So they hired the Apple guy, and said: “Do the same thing over at JCPenney.”   The first thing the guy did was start gutting stuff. He made it look like an Apple store. It didn't look like a JCPenney anymore; it looked like an Apple store.   He said to the customers:     “Hey, you know mark our prices up and then give you coupons to knock it back down to the original price. You're a smart consumer, so we're not gonna do that.” Instead of $9.97, it's gonna be  $10 because we don't wanna insult your intelligence.” He stopped sending out the discount mailers.   Q: What happened?   A: A fourth of JCPenney's’ stock price plummeted the next quarter. Just, BOOM! SLAM!   Now let me ask you a question…   Q: What did the Apple guy kill?   A: The fun of buying. He got rid of it.   People want the anticipation. They wanna play with the perceived value.   We all do that stuff though...   I buy the products because it represents me... NOT because of the price. We ALL do it... whether or not we wanna admit it or not.   So look at the relationship between:   Price Value Anticipation Physical products Digital products   ... these are all mechanisms you can play with and leverage.   You need to ask: “How can I increase the potential average cart value of my funnel by increasing the perceived value?”   THE FIBERFIX FUNNEL FibreFix and The Harmon Brothers came to Russell and asked for help.   I was like, “No way! Dude that's awesome!” Russell goes: “Yeah, they said if we help them they'll help us, and maybe we can do a viral video.”   … and that’s how the viral video idea started and we got to do a cool project with FiberFix.   FiberFix was selling all of their stuff on Shopify…   So... here’s another question for you…   Q: What's the potential cart value of something on Shopify if it's $7.95?   A: Yeah, $7.95. You can't go up anymore. There's no upsells. Potential cart value is capped at $7.95. It's not a funnel, it's a website. That's why websites suck.   Shopify even says on their own blog that you need a sales funnel if you want to sell a lot. They even name ClickFunnels. It's crazy.   So we left FibreFix on Shopify, but we needed to increase the potential average cart value... A LOT!   So instead of just being able to buy one product…   We built a funnel where you could buy one, two, three, four, five or ten products from the get-go. We did a bump for $10. We did another upsell that was like $47. There was another $97 thing.   We increased the potential average cart value up to like $900!   AVERAGE CART VALUE & HUMAN NATURE   Q: Do you know what happens when the option to by more is is there?   A: Some people start to take it!   We started to look at the stats; money coming in, average cart value, cost to acquire, (all that stuff) to see the difference between what was coming in from:   Amazon Potential Cart Value = $7.95 Shopify Potential Cart Value = $7.95 ClickFunnels Shopify Potential Cart Value = $$$ *HUGE*   (It think it was a $25 product actually... anyway, the principle is the same.)   Shopify and Amazon couldn't go any higher, but on ClickFunnels the potential cart value was huge.   We looked at the numbers, and, yeah, most people bought 1 product, but there a percentage who bought more:   10% = bought 2 8% =   bought 3 5%  = bought a HUGE amount A few bought 100.   Wow!   Q: Do you have to pay for and purchase that customer again?   A: No… it’s Pure profit!   That's how you wreck the game!   The same principle is true when you create a core offer:   Adding physical products will drastically increase the perceived value… when you bundle in info products that are easy to fulfill on.   Info products are still huge value... it's just hard for people to imagine it.   That's why we'll put things into a CD... or a massive spread of CDs and product boxes… even if it's not coming packaged like that…. it people start to experience the product in their head.   CHANGE YOUR LIFE… THEN THE WORLD   When you pick which products you’re going to sell be methodical about what you choose... we're talking lifestyle business…   I'm NOT talking change the world business, yet.   I fully intend on changing the world. It took me a long time to say that comfortably. I want to change the world.   In the beginning, it was me figuring out something with enough zeros behind it... where the market expected to spend a lot of money.   So that I didn't have to stand up and say, “Hey, this is gonna be challenging for you to get this. You gotta spend $100 000 for this little supplement pill.”   Internally people are like: “What?”   I don't wanna have to battle that…(and neither should you).   So instead, chose markets where there’s capacity for:   High Perceived Value Massive Anticipation Easy Fulfilment Physical & Digital Bundles   … you’ll make your life easier and your wallet fatter!   BOOM!   Until Next Time - CAPITALIST PIG, BABY!   If you're just starting out you're probably studying a lot. I Corinthians 6:12 3.  Do Not Have Serious Conversations through Electronic Devices God created us to communicate with each other with verbal  and non verbal ques.For Example, I use my eyebrows to communicate with my wife sometimes! :-) Dr. Albert Mehrabian, author of the book Silent Messages conducted a study on nonverbal communication. He found that 7% of any message is conveyed through words, 38% through certain vocal elements, and 55% through nonverbal elements (facial expressions, gestures, posture, etc).  This means that 93% of our communication is nonverbal. Therefore, electronic communication could be missing 93% of its intended meaning.   Although emojis are helpful, they cannot make up for this. Have real face to face conversations with your spouse!Resolve your conflicts in person. Wait until you can talk in person. 4.  Do Not Keep Secrets from Your Spouse. Your spouse should have access to all of your online accounts and passwords.Your spouse should know how to unlock your phone. For example, when possible if I need to talk to someone at work of the opposite sex on the phone,  I try to text, so there is a written record of what was said. Your social media should be a shared thing as a married couple, there should be no secrets. Consider the impact of a social media post on your marriage BEFORE you post it. How will other people view what I am sharing? What will my spouse think of what you are sharing? Consider that anyone in the world can see what you post. 5.  Make Time for Your Spouse without Electronic Devices. Take the time to cultivate your love and passion.Besides the Lord, your relationship with your spouse is the most important one in the world for you. God made marriage for a lifetime of love and passion. Pray together. Share life together. Take a new challenge. Spend 5 minutes each day this week with your spouse with NO electronic devices. Why let technology ruin the love and passion that God intends for you to have.  God wants you to be madly in love with your spouse? Conclusion I am my beloved's, and his desire is toward me. The 4 R’s to Instantly Change your Life The first R is being 100% resourceful. You need to be ignited physically and mentally, to raise your standard. Tony Robbins asks people, “Who here has ever failed? Why did you fail? What do these things have in common?” People would answer the last question with a lack of resources, but then Tony makes the point that people fail because of a lack of resourcefulness, not a lack of resources. If you have enough care and love you will find a way. For Example, JK Rowling, who wrote the Harry Potter series, was broke and living in her car, but she was resourceful and created an empire out of her imagination. She’s now a multi-billionaire. Why? Because she had a hunger and drive and relentlessly went after her dreams. Here’s something to ask yourself, when do you quit? After 1 failure? 10 failures? 100 failures? We had some crazy situations that happened this week! Does Pusha T moonlight as a private investigator? Because that would explain a whole lot about "The Story of Adidon" a brutal dis track he released Tuesday night that escalated his years-long (and recently reignited) beef with Drake. On Friday, Pusha released his well-received, Kanye West-produced album “Daytona,” which notably uses an image of Whitney Houston’s drug-filled bathroom as cover art. The album’s last track, “Infrared,” revived the ghostwriting theory in the opening verse: “The lyric pennin’ equal the Trumps winnin’ / The bigger question is how the Russians did it / It was written like Nas, but it came from Quentin,” referring to rapper Quentin Miller. Basically, Pusha alleges Russians helped President Trump win the election just like ghostwriters supposedly helped Drake throughout his career. This situation seems like it's not going to stop anytime soon! We did discuss some other things though, lol. FOR EXAMPLE...Roseanne! Hours after essential calling former President Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett an ape, the network had finally seen and heard enough. ABC got Roseanne Barr’s racist ass out the paint! Barr’s name had been ringing since Tuesday morning (May 29) across social media after she tweeted the racist statement comparing Jarett to a character from the Planet of the Apes Find out more of what the crew had to say about this one. Happy B-Day Andre 3000! Three Stacks was in town celebrating his 43rd birthday and seen attending several BBQ events at Lake Merritt park. It’s the same spot where a white woman called the police on a black family having a barbecue last month, which led to a firestorm of national outrage and subsequent memes. Accept your feelings, they made you into who you are today fool. Respect yourself! Meaning your feelings should remain first and every else’s is last until you manage to master nurturing your own feelings. Paying attention to your own mistakes can help you become self-sufficient, but its up to you. For the people that doubt prioritizing your own feelings will help, understand most of the time you don’t even know why you behave the way you do. For Example, if you are upset you got a speeding ticket you will probably rant about how you were innocent and didn’t deserve to get pulled over, which makes you resent police, and now you are confused and don’t know why your always so stressed out, it’s because you don’t know why your upset in the first place. You may have said that the reason your upset is because you got a ticket, but in reality if that was the case it would be easy to help you, but since most of your personal problems are invisible to the real world no one can truly help you.

Today's guest is Susie and she is going to share great tips for creating a great collaboration and partnership.     All business are better together and when they are connected with another business or person. No one wants to share customers with others (especially with competition) but there is good reason why you should collaborate, Susie gave us some great examples for that. Partnership is still kind of new to marketing, but it doesn't cost a penny but offers several benefits. Susie explained what attributes your partners should have so you can offer to partner with them. And she mentions that it is very important they have good reputation. And on first touch you can see if they are interested, if yes then continue if not leave them and try find some other partner. Keeping your customers happy is one  key to gaining loyalty with them.  For Example, if you don't have an item in your store you can send them to one you know has that item. This Podcast Is Episode Number 0220 And It Will Be About Contractors Are Skilled In Construction But Not Usually In Construction Accounting Almost every Contractor understands how to do basic repairs and remodels on a house.   As the project grows it gets a little more complicated. Is it a kitchen remodel, a bath remodel, upgrading the laundry area? Building a Deck? Adding a second story addition? Adding a garage? Your Construction Accounting System started small and easy. Perhaps you tracked everything with bank statements and Excel sheets and it worked fine for a while. Later as your Construction Company grew and you began to wonder where you are making and losing money (Job Costing) and you realized you need to better understand Construction Job Cash Flow you purchased QuickBooks thinking it was "Quick" and that is when the trouble started... Each type of project takes planning and skill. Doing a teardown and then building a new house? Oh, maybe the zoning does not allow for a new house so technically it is a major remodel keeping a certain amount of square footage of the original house.   A brand-new contractor without a background in larger projects typically is not going to immediately jump into a large remodel.  Someone who has done lots of remodels may not be comfortable building a new house from the ground up. Decisions in any project are what level of quality of the work, how much detail, the size and the material needed to complete the job Decides How Much It Costs.  Is a Cottage or a Mansion?          The area of the country makes a difference. For Example, a $500,000 house in one part of the country could be a two story, 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths and a wraparound porch. In another part of the country, it may be a 3-bedroom rambler and a carport.      The cost of material may not be a lot cheaper in one area over another. The price of sheetrock and lumber increased in Seattle after Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina. Local labor may be different.   The skillset needs to complete the Handyman Repair, Installation of Plumbing, Heating, Electrical, Roofs, building the Additions on a House, creating a whole house remodel or building a new house are not the same as being able to track all of the expenses and do all of the bookkeeping properly. Construction Accounting and Regular Accounting require entirely different skill sets. With an Excel Spreadsheet, quite a lot can be done to know your costs and track the bills that need to be paid. Many contractors have done this for years. Turning in the spreadsheet and a pile of paperwork to the Tax Accountant to file the annual taxes.   If the Tax Accountant has worked with you for years; they understand your method and figure out a workaround.  Some will setup QuickBooks Desktop or some other software to create monthly, quarterly numbers leading them to the annual Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet needed to file your annual taxes   Your Banker is not quite so willing to do “try to figure out” your financials. They have a limited amount of time to make a presentation to a Loan Committee.  Financial Statements from QuickBooks make it easy for your Banker and the Loan Committee to compare financial statements between applicants. Some contractors have the benefit of being in a small town, where their banker has known them for years. The decision process is more informal.  As Bank Regulators have gotten involved with the decision process – what was a simple “Yes” decision may suddenly be “No”. A lot of Home Builders got caught up in that loop and lost property because could neither sell or refinance. Are you counting on “The Kindness of Others” (to quote slightly from a classic movie) for solutions to your lack of good bookkeeping? Sometimes it is harder to avoid doing something than it would be to find a qualified “Construction Bookkeeper” to do the Bookkeeping for your Construction Company.   Here is my parental side showing. Many times our kids would spend more time avoiding their homework, cleaning up their rooms, doing chores and explaining “Why It Wasn’t Done” or “Why They Shouldn’t Have To Do It” In many cases more time was spent explaining than it would have taken to do it.   As Construction Accountants, we understand there are “Too Many Tasks” and not enough time in the day. This is “Why we develop processes, procedures, use Software and app’s” to make it as easy as possible for our clients. As Contractors, it is not that you can’t do it but is it the “Highest And Best Use of Your Time” Wow – I’m positive you can enter in fuel slips into QuickBooks. Might be a better use of your time talking to a prospect, looking at a job, creating an estimate, writing up the invoice, or collecting The Money, going to the Bank to deposit the Money, paying your insurance, cleaning your truck and even sleeping. The Basics in our world is the Five Key Performance Indicators plus Job Costing. Sometimes a contractor is so busy trying to get super detailed that they miss the basics. I make recommendations on what I call Sharie’s Cash Management 101 – Get the Money. Think about the Five Key Performance Indicators like the dials on your truck dashboard. Washington State it is a sales tax driven state, is your state the same way? One issue Contractors discover is that Sales Tax is due at the time of purchase unless they have a Reseller Permit (issued by the State of Washington) Sales tax reports are due monthly, quarterly or annually. Some items purchased is considered “Consumables” – Suppliers have the exact list.   If a purchase is made on April 1st with sales tax paid to the source (supplier) and if the Tax Return is paid Quarterly – it is due on July 31st, therefore, sales tax was paid months earlier than necessary. ·    This impacts cash flow. ·    Failing to Get Job Deposits. ·    Failing to outline payment schedule with the client on larger projects. ·    (Paid Weekly, Bi-Weekly or by Milestone of the job). ·    Failing to send the “Notice To The Owner” and relying on the “Notice To The Owner by their Material Supplier” This is helpful but only to the amount of the material bill.   ·    Failing to get Signed Change Orders. ·    Customers versus Clients remember the deducts and have memory loss on the increases. Construction Bookkeeping is more than Balancing the Check Book (which is important) Receiving actual bills from your subcontractors. Have you set a schedule on “How and When” you are paying subcontractors? Is it tied to the same schedule you are billing your client?   Money In and Money Out. Just because you have money in the bank from the last project does not mean you should delay or ignore billing on your current projects.  Remember you have outstanding liabilities coming.   Here is what is coming:  Material Suppliers on 30-day accounts, Credit Card payment for purchases paid for, Payroll Liabilities, Sales Tax Liabilities, Worker’s Compensation, Liability Insurance, Vehicle Insurance.      Bigger costs like Vehicle Repairs, Down Payment on a newer vehicle.   That marketing budget for business cards, flyers, online advertising, upgrading or updating your website.  Adding GPS tracking, software, and your Construction Accountant.   It all takes money from someplace.   Even if it is from a line of credit; the bank wants to see financials not some scribbled notes on the back of a brown paper bag.   Frequently Asked Questions From Contractors: Am I too small for you to help? I am just getting started.   My answer is No - You Are Not Too Small.  We have a plan for the Brand New and Existing Small Contractors.     Shouldn’t I learn how to do all of my own bookkeeping before turning it over to you? My Answer Is No – It is not possible to be an expert in everything we do.   Learning what receipts to keep is more important than learning “How To Put Them Into QuickBooks When I hire you – Will do everything for me? My Answer Is No – You will continue to control the money.   We are here to help, but all final decisions on How Much To Bid the job. What, When and How Much to Invoice your client is your decision. Who to pay and when to pay them is also your decision.   We have a Document Management System that links to your banks and credit card companies. We receive feeds (copies of the transactions) after they have cleared the bank, plus the monthly statements.   We will still need to receive Customer Invoices.  Currently, provide to our clients a Stand Alone invoice built on Excel. How to Integrate #BeFirst into YOUR Training #BeFirst can be a little daunting at first. When and where do you implement the training? How? AND how and when is the best time to get the most benefit? What do you pair it with? Gym session? Skill session? Seperate to anything else? I still haven’t forgotten about the episode I promised you where I would share the new P&L of the subject store I helped some investors buy about 14 months ago. I have some new updates on that store and recorded that episode halfway through already, which I will share soon I promise. Now as for this episode, I had to do this one first because I have had way too many emails lately where many of the blog readers and podcast listeners have been asking me various due diligence questions, and it is hard to answer them via email. So I have decided to pick just 6 out of them since they are mostly all similar in nature, and I thought by sharing them with rest of you, it will benefit everyone. For various privacy reasons, I have decided not to mention any names of the people that sent me these emails here. Let’s dive right on…   Question #1 I need your advice about the valuation for the store based on the following information. Inside Sale# $55000/month (27% profit margin) $55,000 x 27% = $14,850 Outside Sale# 25000 Gallon/month (10 cents per gallon) 25,000 gallon x 10cents =$2,500 Lottery commission# 4000/month, ATM# $200/month Total Gross Profit $21,550 Owner absentee Capability to open deli with grill. Store located in small town and mostly neighborhood business.   Expense: Rent# 5000 "NNN." Utility# 1300 Credit# 1000 Payroll# 2400 (Two full-time employees) Other# 500 ______________________ Total Expenses: $10,200 Net profit: $21,550 – $10,200 = $11,350 Asking price is $225,000 What would be the price we should go for? Question#2 Shabbir, here are few questions. Please note that I do not have prior experience, so how can I convince them that I am serious and are there any training provided by gas companies?   When buying just the business, I mean just goodwill without R/E, how do I make sure that my investment is protected? For Example, If I buy the lease for 500k and pay 16K a month. What if the lease is for two years and after two years the owner does not want to renew the lease. How can I make sure 100% that I will not lose everything?   As far as tax benefits are concerned at the end of the year, which option is better buying or leasing? I would appreciate if you only focus on the tax benefits since you have already talked about pros and cons from other angles. For example, let's say that gas station A is leased with goodwill paid by on-hand cash and gas station B is bought with R/E with a bank loan. Let's say both gas stations have exactly same per month profit after all lease or loan payments.   Now at the end of the year when I will file income tax, which option will give me bigger return? What is the best way to approach companies which own multiple stations around me? Question#3 Good Morning Shabbir, Glad, I ran into your website. I found a gas station business for sale for $85K. We did our due diligence to look into the traffic, etc. Mostly the sales are from Cigarettes and Beer. The other items are pretty much a stand still.   In addition, this station the gas is unbranded. They are selling like 700 Gallons per day, inside the store with the majority of sales been Cigar and Beer. The sales is about 40K revenue and 35% profit, and expense is about 9.5K. Profit is about $2,750 is what I am estimating.   Is the goodwill they are asking outrages? Today's Topic Downtime for Worldbuilders Recently, I was recording an episode for why Downtime is important on my other podcast The Small Biz Life. It is something I am passionate about because I want to be present in my life, I work ten hour days at my day job, Kristin and I are creating a media company, I volunteer time every week, plus I am writing a novel for NaNoWriMo. I love everything I do.  However, I do not have extra hours in the week so I strategically use downtime. Downtime like a fine wine helps cleanse the palate of mind. I use it to get a better understanding of the world, which allows me to create more detail into my worlds. Downtime helps me learn from literature effective ways to deliver stories. Downtime like a fine wine helps cleanse the palate of mind. When your work day gets longer. You will run into a couple of major issues. First, you will lose productivity when you switch between completely different types of tasks.  For Example, If I am meeting with someone about requirements for an upcoming project and then after the meeting I try and write a chapter for my fantasy novel, I will struggle.  I will have trouble letting go of the details of the meeting, which will make it harder to get into the minds of the characters.  I will also struggle with the types of words needed to keep the feel of my novel.  The actual act of writing will be slower. Now, I will try and deal with this when scheduling my time.  However, So times life will force you to schedule radically different task next to each other.  When they do, I will take a break.  I will jam out to some incredible music that makes me want to move.  In the span of a five-minute break, I can free my mind of the last task and be more open to the next.  I will get more writing do in a shorter period of time. You hear me often talk about “The WAVE of energy” on my Instagram Story… I get so many questions on just what I am talking about so I wanted to use this Mindset Monday to address this topic. I LOVE THIS TOPIC! So…I’ve been encouraging you to follow your excitement in life. For those of you looking to make changes in your life, you are asking… Wes, how do you know what excites me. This is a very simple question…. demanding a very simple answer.… What lights you on fire. What do you engage in and get lost within the moment? What do you enjoy so much that you forget to eat, or sacrifice sleep to get involved with? Clue into that? There’s something to that…. You are not meant to immediately know how to get to build a business out of this or HOW to turn this into your dominate source of income. You are only meant to follow what makes you feel GREAT.… Here is why…. The UNIVERSE is an incredible organism. One of many incredible truths. One of those truths…. is that the UNIVERSE provides you with a reality that is a DIRECT REFLECTION of your inner psyche… What does this mean you ask? The UNIVERSE operates on what is called “FEEDBACK LOOPS”. Feedback loops can be described very simply. You are the creator of your reactions - THE CREATOR OF YOUR REALITY. Meaning you choose how to react to EVERY - SINGLE - THING that happens to you in your physical reality. FOR EXAMPLE…. When the person cuts you off on the interstate, this has NO MEANING WHAT-SO-EVER. THIS action is completely NEUTRAL. It is how you react to that situation that creates your reality. If you immediately choose to be PISSED because this person has cut you off, you immediately CHOOSE to shift your energy into a negative space. The environment or the inner thoughts inside you become e AGGRESSIVE… NEGATIVE…. The attention YOU give the negative emotion increases the chance that you will interpret anything that happens to you thereafter as NEGATIVE. YOUR negative energy grows. The people that you interact with can then feel your HEAVY - NEGATIVE emotion and they will reciprocate your energy. This can easily be shifted … SHIFTED BY CHOOSING TO CHASE WHAT EXCITES YOU. Choosing to find a way to live a life of excitement. This will slowly help you create an excited psyche. Each day you are waking up and putting your attention towards what MAKES YOU STOKED! This is the beginning of a shift in habits. You are beginning to put your focus towards things that are food for your soul… You are happier inside because your time is spent doing things that you enjoy. Because you are ha ppy inside - you reaction to situations have a positive interpretation. MAYBE I SHOULD GIVE MYSELF MORE DISTANCE FROM THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME SO THAT I AM NOT ENDANGERING MYSELF FOR SOMEONE WHO GETS BETWEEN THIS SPACE…. the action no longer has a control over your energy because your habits have shifted to the positive space… YOU ARE THE CO-CREATOR OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT. I come with Arrogant Bastard Ale, and somewhere along the way we crack open the Lagunitas Hop Stoopid.  Fortunately, my wife agreed to be my Uber because I’m uber-inebriated.  Ubernebriated.  #FeelTheUbern We continue our conversation about Dave Grohl as an important advocate and ambassador for music and expressive authenticity.  Neither of us particularly like Grohl’s music, but that’s not the point.  The man gives a shit, has a public platform, and is willing to (foo) fight for the arts. #FooFighterForTheArts I ask RJ another misguided but often asked question:  Paul or John?  “This,” RJ is likely to say, “Is a trick question.”  There are so many of these “trick” questions in the world.  May the next person who utters the phrase, “There are no stupid questions,” be immediately barraged with a cluster of stupid questions. #ColdEnoughOutThereForYou Regarding John and Paul?  They don’t work as well without each other.  “For Example,” explains RJ, “Imagine would be a much better song if Paul sang it and wrote the chorus.”  In any awesome band…everyone is integral to the sound of the band, and every player sounds uniquely like him/herself.  “Anyone can (learn to) play Tom Sawyer,” quips RJ, “But nobody will sound like Neil Peart.” And can we make yet another Beatles/Pink Floyd comparison?  Yes, we can.  You’ll perhaps recall that RJ completed my analogy which began, “Ringo is to the Beatles sound as…,” with, “…Nick Mason is to Pink Floyd.”  (Neither were technically “good” drummers, but both defined the sounds of their respective bands.  And not just any bands.  We’re talking about the Beatles and Pink Floyd.)  So, further comparisons: Paul McCartney and David Gilmour are Pop. (In RJ’s words, “They’re like, Yaaaaayyy!  Too much Richard Simmons.”) John Lennon and Roger Waters are sarcastic bastards with venom.  (In Greg’s words, “They’re like, fuck off, you wanker.”) RJ reveals his Mt. Rushmore of drummers and Beatles tunes and responds to a fun little wildcard question.  And he plays, “Enid,” by Barenaked Ladies.  Check out the Cuica. (“QUEE-kah”)  You know what it is, it’s the awesome sound from, “Me and Julio Down By the School Yard.”  You know what?  I’ll just put that song at the end of this.  It’s a great song.  And that cuica.  And the whistling solo?!  C’mon!!  And at the the beginning?  Let’s go with, “Money” by Pink Floyd.  It’s in 7/4, you know?  Except when it’s in 4/4.  It’s a badass tune. This week, we discuss Masayoshi Sokens history within Square Enix. Enjoy! Spotlight: Masayoshi Soken By Joseph DeGolyer   Look, it’s hard to follow up after a huge success.   To every first generation of Saturday night live hosts, there’s always a second generation. Like Irvine Kershner after George Lucas. Like Jason Newsted after Cliff Burton. Like Andrew Johnson after Abraham Lincoln. Like Commodus after Marcus Aurelius.   Some, like Kershner, rise to meet the challenge. Others, like Andrew Johnson, do so terribly their effects sour generations. Even more are just forgotten with time.   For Example, Can you name the musical composer for Final Fantasy 12? How about 13?   For most of us, these names probably don’t pop so easily into our heads… (They are Hitoshi Sakimoto, Hayato Matsuo, Masaharu Iwata for FF12 and Masashi Hamauzu for 13 By the way---and yes, I did have to look those up.)   How can you possibly follow a legend like Nobuo Uematsu? With 12 main series Final Fantasy games composed primarily by him. With pieces like “theme of Love” from FF4 being taught to schoolchildren in Japan, and having the second-highest selling video game single ever (Eyes on Me, yes I still hate it, although I won’t deny the accomplishment), how can someone possibly fill his shoes.   You’ve heard the rumors… Is the next Uematsu here?   HAS THE CHOSEN ONE ARRIVED?   On that, who knows?   But let’s talk about him anyway.   This is our special Spotlight on Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn composer, Masayoshi Soken!!!   ----------------------------small musical interlude----------------------------------   Masayoshi Soken was born on January 10th, 1975 in La Paz Mexico. His father was a Trumpet Player in the NHK Symphony Orchestra for many years, as well as a professor at the Okinawa Prefectural University of Art. Why was his pregnant mother in mexico at the time of Soken’s birth? Who knows! Because he went straight from Mexico to Tokyo, Japan. There he grew to love music, learn piano, learn the guitar, and get into the Tokyo University of Science.   Now I’ve desperately been searching for what he got his degree in at University… There are departments there in Science, engineering, innovation studies, chemical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, management, fire science, math, technology, and biology….   Basically, no music or sound design school.   Students are required to take some liberal arts stuff, according to the university’s website.   I figured, for fun, I’ll list off their principles on liberal arts-supplemented education:   “Leaders in science and technology are required to remain motivated to tackle, in cooperation with like minded people from different fields, cross-sectional and complex issues that transcend the borders of specialties, while maintaining a foothold in science and technology. We believe that cultivating such ability and supporting outstanding specialized skills are the role of liberal arts education. For this purpose, organizing a curriculum for liberal arts education should aim to cultivate the following types of ability. Ability to adopt a bird’s-eye perspective of nature, people, and society Ability to think logically and critically Communication skills Internationalism (ability to understand different cultures, languages, ethnic groups, and international issues) Self-management ability”   ----------------------------small musical interlude-------------------------------------   Whatever it was that he learned from University, be it Biology or his skill in “Internationalism”, he was able to get an interview at Square in 1998 to work in the sound department.   Apparently, his enthusiasm for rock and roll is what got him the job, as well as his sick skills on the guitar.   And he put that guitar skill to work with his first video game soundtrack credit for the game “Gekikuukan Pro Yakyuu At the End of the Century” in 1999. My only assumption was that he was just lurking in sound design for various games, and not given any more opportunities to compose any music until 2005. There is some confusion regarding his credits, as Soken often went by pseudonyms during this time. It is believed that he co-created the piece "Endless Love, Endless Road” with Masashi Hamauzu and Tsuyoshi Sekito from a Final Fantasy X Tribute Album called “Feel/Go Dream Yuna & Tidus”in 2001. He contributed a remix for The Bouncer’s main theme, and he worked on Square-Enix’s web-based games Elebest, Game Brain, and Zenobuster.   He was moving up the ladder.   In 2007 he got the opportunity to play second fiddle to Kenji Ito on the score of Dawn of Mana in 2007.   Here’s his biggest contribution to that game, a track called “Sanctuary”... Nobuo Uematsu was making a one-off return to the series after going solo, and his shoes wouldn’t need to be filled until 1.0’s massive failure.   During the 1.0 to 2.0 debacle (you can listen to our FF14 review to learn all about that), Soken was given the double duty of directing the sound of both games. With no Uematsu, Soken had to fill in much of the soundtrack himself, eventually creating over 100 tracks for the new game, and later creating another 60 tracks for the Heavensward expansion.   Let’s go through a few of his most popular tracks from FF14. In Episode 14 I try something completely new to me, podcasting without a computer. A year ago I would never thought this possible, but everyday someone somewhere seems to come up with a way to push the envelope of what an iPad (or any iOS device for that matter) can do. So let's back up to April 2011. In Early 2011 The iPad 2 had been announced, and with it Garage band for iOS. At the time of that announcement I was saving to get a Macbook to replace my 2005 iBook (which was still running quite well and still is today!). Once I heard Garage band was coming to the iPad, I did a serious needs analysis and did something that at the time was considered quite radical....I replaced my Laptop with an iPad. I realized that what I really needed from a laptop device was something I could write from (blogging, articles, emails, etc...) and something I could basic web surfing and research with, plus something to work as a notepad for musical ideas since my iMac was my main recording machine. A little research showed my that there were plenty of good blogging apps and Apple had released the iWork suite for iOS, so I was ready. When i first got the iPad, I admit I could not do everything on it that I could have done on my laptop, but I did anticipate that going in from the needs analysis I had done. While I know that we have a marketplace that thrives on planned obsolescence, when I invest a lot of money in something I like to be sure it will serve my needs for many years. So I had worked into my plan a transition period of about a year to completely move from laptop to iPad. The really good news is that I was able to make that transition to completely retiring the laptop in about 8-9 months. The once thing I discovered about the iPad when I got it is that it was very much like the Wild West. Everyone was moving there to stake out a cliam and try to make some money. This completion meant app prices going up and down, but most importantly, it meant that App developers were trying to "out feature" one another. For Example, when I bought my iPad I had purchased an app called Blogsy to do all my blogging from. It is still the best blogging app out there in my opinion. When I bought the app, it was limited but worked better than other apps. I found my self starting a post with Blogsy and then finishing it at my iMac. In about 6-8 months, that stopped. Blogsy was furiously making updates (and they still are) to make their App the best. That drive has allowed me to write entire posts with embedded media from anywhere I have an iPad and a data connection. Now that I have had an iPad for two years, the only things I do on the iMac are the "Heavy Lifting" things like mixing and recording songs in logic and of course my podcast. A couple months agao a coworker who learned about my enjoyment of podcasting told me about an app called Bossjock Studio. Apparently one of the co-founders of Libsyn (One of the best Podcast hosting companies out there) developed an app that was designed to let you do a "Live" podcast. I bought the app, but had no time to really try it out until now. I did open it from time to time and look around and read their blog to get tips for when I did use it. One of those tips was that their app worked really well with the iRig mic. As luck would have it, I was on Hello Music one day and saw a great deal on the iRig Mic (which as of right now is still going on, but do not expect it to last long). I had seen the iRig Mic in magazines, and really did not see the value of it, but for the price I took a chance. I was impressed. What I was expecting was a cheap, plastic, low quality microphone with a fancy logo. What I got was a really nice, well built metal chassy microphone that I would put on par with the look and feel of a Sure SM58. I downloaded the free Vocal Live App by IK Multimedia and gave it a test. Again, very surprised and quite happy. The mic sounded very clear and had three level settings on it depending on t...
