In this episode of Storage Wins, Alex Pardo and Dan Wentzel break down a live deal opportunity that checks many of the boxes investors are looking for: strong current revenue, below-market rents, and favorable seller financing terms. But as the numbers start to come together, the real conversation shifts from the deal itself to something deeper—confidence.   Dan walks through a 32,000 square foot facility in Washington state that's generating roughly $275,000 in annual revenue with clear upside potential. With seller financing on the table at just 5% interest and no money required out of pocket, the opportunity presents a realistic path to immediate cash flow and long-term growth.   As Alex breaks down the numbers in real time, the deal begins to take shape: from roughly $2,000 per month in current cash flow to a projected $4,500+ per month after implementing operational improvements and raising rents. But despite the strength of the deal, hesitation still shows up—highlighting a key truth for every investor: the biggest obstacle isn't always the deal, it's the belief that you're ready for it.   This episode is a powerful blend of tactical deal analysis and mindset coaching—showing you how to evaluate opportunities through worst-case, likely-case, and best-case scenarios, while also challenging the fear that can hold you back from moving forward.   You'll Learn How To: Evaluate deals using worst-case, likely-case, and best-case scenarios Break down cash flow, NOI, and debt service in simple terms Identify strong opportunities based on current performance—not just projections Leverage seller financing to acquire deals with little to no money down Decide when to bring in an equity partner versus taking down a deal yourself Move quickly on opportunities without overanalyzing   What You'll Learn in This Episode: [0:00] Recap of the journey and the importance of documenting the process [2:14] Celebrating wins and rebuilding momentum after a reset [5:15] The opportunity: 32,000 sq ft facility in Washington state [6:33] Why seller financing at 5% changes the entire deal [8:59] Understanding occupancy and what it reveals about pricing [11:03] Breaking down revenue and estimating NOI [14:07] How to calculate cash flow after debt service [17:09] Why this deal works with no money out of pocket [21:23] Projecting future upside through rent increases and tenant protection [23:59] Moving from $2K/month to $4.5K/month in cash flow [26:04] The real hesitation: confidence vs capability [30:14] Why fear shows up when the opportunity is real [33:40] Equity partner vs doing the deal yourself [36:10] Negotiating terms: price, duration, and flexibility [40:20] Due diligence, earnest money, and structuring offers [45:26] Why imperfect action beats waiting for certainty [48:00] The next step: take action and control the deal   Who This Episode Is For: Investors evaluating their first real deal opportunity Listeners who understand the numbers but hesitate to act Anyone unsure how to structure creative financing deals Entrepreneurs dealing with fear when the stakes get real People ready to move from learning into action   Why You Should Listen: The deal doesn't change—but your belief in yourself does. This episode shows how even a strong opportunity can feel uncertain when you're stepping into something new. By breaking down the numbers and the mindset side by side, you'll see exactly how to evaluate deals objectively—and how to push past the hesitation that comes with growth. If you've been waiting for the "right" deal or the "right" moment, this conversation will challenge you to trust your preparation, take action, and step into the opportunity in front of you.   Follow Alex Pardo here: Alex Pardo Website: https://alexpardo.com/ Alex Pardo Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/alexpardo15 Alex Pardo Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexpardo25 Alex Pardo YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AlexPardo Storage Wins Website: https://storagewins.com/   Have conversations with at least three storage owners, brokers, private lenders, or equity partners inside the Storage Wins Facebook Group. Jeremy offers an in-depth look at how he revolutionized his firm's decision-making by building an AI Board of Advisors, using custom GPT personas modeled after renowned business leaders such as Steve Jobs, Mike Michalowicz, and Andrew Ng.Jeremy recounts how, during a critical cash flow crisis, he turned to his AI advisors for guidance. By simulating the perspectives and expertise of these influential figures, he was able to identify and resolve key marketing tracking issues, streamline and optimize his firm's financial operations, and successfully launch six new premium service offerings. Jeremy details the process of designing and refining each AI persona to reflect the unique strengths and strategic thinking of their real-life counterparts, allowing him to “consult” with a virtual roundtable of experts at any time.He emphasizes the profound impact this AI advisory board had on reducing the sense of isolation that often comes with law firm leadership, enabling him to make faster, more informed decisions with greater confidence. As a Max Law Con 2025 speaker, Jeremy encourages fellow law firm owners to harness the power of AI-driven advisors not only to solve immediate business challenges but also to foster ongoing innovation and resilience in their practices.Timestamps00:04:37 Financial Crisis and Tyson's Advice00:05:55 Marketing Blind Spots and Steve Jobs AI00:08:46 Implementing AI Advice for Marketing00:10:13 Preparing for Mastermind with AI00:11:29 AI Coaching During Personal Crisis00:12:40 How the AI Board Works00:14:13 Profit First Confusion and Mike Michalowicz AI00:17:23 The Power of Asking for Help00:19:00 Concrete Outcomes from AI Advisors00:20:37 Business Transformation and Personal Impact00:22:02 Encouragement to Build Your Own AI BoardConnect with Jeremy:Website  Instagram Facebook  Linkedin  Youtube  Resources:Join the Guild MembershipSubscribe to the Maximum Lawyer Youtube ChannelFollow us on InstagramJoin the Facebook GroupFollow the Facebook PageFollow us on LinkedIn Resources:Join the Guild MembershipSubscribe to the Maximum Lawyer Youtube ChannelFollow us on InstagramJoin the Facebook GroupFollow the Facebook PageFollow us on LinkedIn

What happens when the product that made you famous starts holding you back? Kevin Gould co-founded Glamnetic in 2019 with Ann McFerran, launching a magnetic eyelash brand that exploded from $1 million to $50 million in revenue in just one year — fueled by a great product, smart growth marketing, and the COVID-era boom in DIY beauty. But when the tailwinds reversed — iOS 14 updates sent acquisition costs soaring, the lash category contracted, and revenue dipped 25% — Kevin faced a make-or-break decision. Rather than doubling down on what was declining, he pivoted the entire business into press-on nails, a category still in its infancy. Today, Glamnetic is one of the largest press-on nail brands in the world, doing over $100 million a year. In this episode, Kevin gets real about the unglamorous side of hypergrowth: the cash flow crunches that come with scaling too fast, the inventory mistakes that haunt you, and the emotional toll of watching revenue fall when you expected it to double. He shares how he and his team navigated the pivot, why community and brand affinity will always outlast paid acquisition, and why the best advice he can give founders is: don't grow too fast. You'll learn: Why going from $1M to $50M overnight nearly broke the business How to manage cash flow and inventory when you're self-funded The marketing mix that built a real brand — not just an ad machine Why TikTok Shop is the biggest arbitrage opportunity right now How a 40,000-member Facebook community doubles as a product development engine The one hire every founder should prioritize early on What it really takes — personally and professionally — to turn a pivot into a $100M business Subscribe and watch Shopify Masters on YouTube!Sign up for your FREE Shopify Trial here.

In today's episode, I reflect on what's been on my mind lately in both life and business, from the busyness of this season to the deeper importance of staying connected to myself. I talk about how easy it's becoming to rely on AI and outside noise for validation, and why that can lead to disconnection and distorted thinking if we're not careful. I also share why cultivating stillness, critical thinking, and self-trust is more important than ever. This episode is really a reminder that success doesn't come from copying others. It comes from alignment, authenticity, and creating your own way forward.

Keep winning! Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Kevin Cohee.Title: Owner, Chairman & CEO of OneUnited BankHost: Rushion McDonaldPodcast: Money Making Conversations Masterclass Kevin Cohee discusses the mission, history, and future of OneUnited Bank, the largest Black‑owned bank and the first Black‑owned internet bank in the U.S. The conversation connects Black economic history, financial literacy, technology (AI), and wealth-building, positioning OneUnited Bank as a modern solution to long‑standing financial exclusion in Black and underserved communities. Purpose of the Interview The interview is designed to: Educate listeners on why Black-owned banks matter historically and economically. Explain how technology has transformed banking, making location irrelevant. Address financial exclusion, particularly reliance on check-cashing services. Promote financial literacy as the foundation of wealth creation. Position OneUnited Bank as a practical, accessible tool for individuals, entrepreneurs, and communities to build equity. Key Themes & Takeaways 1. A Mission Rooted in Black History Kevin Cohee frames OneUnited Bank as part of a long historical vision, not a modern trend. Leaders such as Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. all advocated for a national Black-owned bank. Cohee’s own family legacy ties back to Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, including land ownership stemming from negotiated “40 acres and a mule” outcomes. Takeaway: Economic independence has always been central to Black progress. 2. From Brick-and-Mortar to Digital Banking OneUnited originally grew by acquiring small Black-owned banks nationwide. The bank pivoted early toward technology-driven banking, recognizing that: Customers expect 24/7 access Physical branches are no longer required Digital reach enables national—and global—impact Key insight: Technology allowed OneUnited to become a national Black bank without national branches. 3. Financial Technology Built for Real-Life Problems Kevin Cohee emphasizes that OneUnited designs products around how people actually live, not just traditional banking norms. Examples include: Second-chance checking accounts Emergency small-dollar loans Alternative credit criteria Nationwide surcharge-free ATM access AI-powered tools that help users understand: Cash flow Assets vs. liabilities Net worth (or debt) Financial decision-making in real time Takeaway: Banking should help people function—not punish them for past mistakes. 4. Financial Literacy Is the Real Wealth Gap Cohee states that 90% of Americans are financially illiterate, largely because: Financial literacy is not taught in K–12 education He compares this to not teaching reading—and then blaming people for illiteracy. OneUnited uses AI and data aggregation to help customers make expert-level decisions without being experts. Key message: Financial literacy, not income alone, determines long-term wealth. 5. Ending Dependence on Check-Cashing Services Kevin sharply criticizes high-fee check-cashing businesses that dominate underserved neighborhoods. OneUnited offers digital check deposits, debit cards, and ATM access—removing the need for physical branches. Anyone, anywhere in the U.S., can bank with OneUnited via oneunited.com. Takeaway: Lack of access is no longer an excuse—awareness is the missing link. 6. Technology as the New “40 Acres” Kevin draws a powerful parallel: Land ownership was once the primary source of wealth. Technology and financial literacy are today’s equivalents. Entrepreneurs no longer need to manufacture products—branding, distribution, and digital reach are the new leverage. Key insight: Technology levels the playing field—if people understand how to use it. 7. Mandatory Financial Literacy as a Policy Solution Kevin advocates for required financial literacy courses in all U.S. schools. He cites research showing: One required high-school financial literacy course can generate $100,000+ in lifetime net worth per student. He frames this as a matter of equity, not preference. Takeaway: Systemic problems require systemic solutions. Notable Quotes “The concept of a national Black-owned bank goes all the way back to slavery.” “We’re not behind in technology—we are the party.” “Ninety percent of Americans are not financially literate.” “You don’t have to go to check cashers and get ripped off.” “Technology is the new 40 acres.” “Financial literacy alone can generate over $100,000 in net worth per person.” “There has never been a better time to build a business than right now.” Overall Impact This interview is both a financial masterclass and a historical lesson. Kevin Cohee reframes banking as a tool of empowerment, not just transactions, and positions OneUnited Bank as: A modern solution to historic exclusion A technology-first institution built for underserved communities A catalyst for financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and wealth creation Final message: Access + education + technology can finally close the racial wealth gap—if people choose to engage. #SHMS #STRAW #BESTSupport the show: https://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sales Systems for Entrepreneurs Manny introduced the Targeted Lead Generation Podcast and discussed the topic of why most entrepreneurs struggle with sales. He explained that the issue is often not a sales problem but a sales systems problem, where inconsistent results make everything feel harder than it should be. Manny mentioned that he helps entrepreneurs build simple and consistent sales systems that produce results, and he promised to share three key shifts that can improve business outcomes. Sales Messaging Complexity Challenge Manny discussed the challenge of entrepreneurs trying to sell to too many people across different industries, explaining that when companies have too many products or solutions, their salespeople struggle to effectively communicate the value to prospects. He provided an example of an insurance company with multiple products that resulted in weak messaging and low conversion rates. Manny's discussion appeared to be building toward a solution to this common sales challenge. Target Audience Focus Strategy Manny emphasized the importance of focusing on a narrow, specific target audience, using the example of an insurance company that narrowed down to one product line and type of client. He explained that when the focus is clear, messages become more effective and sales conversations become easier, shifting from trying to convince to connecting with the prospect. Manny advised against jumping into conversations with immediate pitching, instead recommending a shift from selling to connecting with the prospect. Improving Sales Questioning Techniques Manny emphasized the importance of asking better questions and understanding the prospect's situation rather than using generic approaches. He explained that focusing on a specific niche leads to deeper understanding and more effective conversations, which helps build trust and reduces resistance. Manny illustrated his point by showing how improving the close rate from 20% to 40% could double income while requiring less selling time per deal. Business Systems and Operations Challenges Manny discussed a key challenge that keeps entrepreneurs stuck, emphasizing the importance of having systems in place for consistent business operations. He explained that operating without a real system leads to unreliable results, as many entrepreneurs rely on self-motivation and random activities rather than structured approaches. Manny highlighted that while ad-hoc efforts may work initially, they are ineffective for long-term business building. Sales System Framework Overview Manny outlined a simple sales system consisting of daily outreach, a conversion structure, and a follow-up process to achieve consistent and predictable results. He emphasized that most deals fail in the follow-up stage and highlighted the importance of building this system into a business through the Coach Manny Sales Accelerator Framework. Manny invited listeners to book a strategy session to identify and address issues in their current sales process. Targeted Lead Generation Episode Manny encouraged listeners to check the show notes link and schedule time with him for potential collaboration. He emphasized that sales doesn't have to feel hard when using the right focus, conversations, and system. You’ve got quick tips galore this week: if your iPad battery’s draining mysteriously, your Apple Pencil might be the culprit, so pop it off when you’re not using it. Want custom emoji? Now you can create your own. LaunchBar fans, there’s a slick way to jump straight into System Settings, and if you’re self-hosting Bitwarden, the guys walk you through adding a local server with Cloudflare Tunnels. Pilot Pete also breaks down getting your digital ID working at TSA — and makes a compelling case that it’s actually more secure than handing over your physical license — plus there’s a look at TSA’s new Touchless ID system. On the AI side, if agentic browsing still makes you nervous, Dave and Pete have practical advice for easing in, and they dig into why the app you use matters just as much as the LLM behind it — including a look at Claude’s upcoming Mythos model. You’ll hear how to tighten your AI agent’s security awareness (Don’t Get Caught slipping on that one), use Comet to become the ultimate “Reply Guy,” let your LLM tell you which apps are available in Setapp, and even have your chatbot generate QR codes . Wrapping up, there’s a fix for Mail not seeing updated Contacts Groups, a cost breakdown of building your own 2026 27-inch iMac, and an honest conversation about whether Plex is getting worse. On today's episode, we welcome Robbie Salter, Co-Founder of Jupiter — the clinically proven, salon-grade scalp care brand redefining how dandruff is treated. What started as a personal frustration during an intense period of work stress led Robbie to discover that the dandruff category hadn't meaningfully evolved in decades. Most products forced consumers to choose between efficacy and experience — outdated drugstore formulas that worked but felt embarrassing, or premium haircare that looked good but didn't actually treat the condition. Jupiter was created to bridge that gap. Through extensive consumer research and early demand testing, Robbie and his Co-founder Ross Goodhart uncovered a major opportunity to modernize the category. They built Jupiter as a science-backed brand that treats dandruff at the root while also acknowledging the role lifestyle, stress, and environment play in scalp health. By combining clinically proven formulas with clean ingredients, elevated design, and stigma-breaking education, Jupiter is helping normalize dandruff care and setting a new standard for results-driven haircare. In this episode, Robbie shares the insights that helped validate the opportunity in a legacy category, what surprised him most about building in a space historically associated with stigma, and how Jupiter is helping shift the conversation around scalp health. We discuss the role of consumer education, the importance of destigmatizing common conditions, and how thoughtful brand storytelling — including campaigns like the “Shampoo Heist” — can turn challenges into momentum. From navigating the emotional highs and lows of entrepreneurship to redefining what premium dandruff care can look like, this conversation offers a fascinating look at how founders can rethink even the most overlooked industries. If you're interested in building modern consumer brands, redefining legacy categories, or how founders turn personal insight into meaningful innovation — this episode is for you. My Guest: Nir Eyal is a Stanford lecturer, behavioral designer, and bestselling author who has spent his career at the intersection of psychology, technology, and human behavior. He's one of the most rigorous thinkers alive on why people do what they do, and what it actually takes to change. Notes Julie introduced Nir to the Turnaround technique. Nir and Julie met the first week of college in 1997 and have been married since 2001. A big part of the genesis of Beyond Belief came from Julie introducing Nir to this technique called The Turnaround, which comes out of the work from Byron Katie, that she used with her mother to repair the relationship she had with her mom. A limiting belief is a belief that saps motivation and increases suffering. It does that by creating short-term relief from discomfort. "I hate public speaking, I'm no good at public speaking, so I'm going to avoid public speaking." You reduce your motivation to go on stage, providing yourself temporary relief, but long-term suffering. The Turnaround helps you collect a portfolio of perspectives. The problem is that our minds hate changing beliefs. We use these beliefs to justify passivity. A turnaround helps you identify many different kinds of beliefs, and then you can choose the ones that serve you versus the ones that hurt you. Your conscious mind can only process 50 bits of information per second. Your brain is processing 11 million bits of information (the sound of a voice, light hitting your retinas, the ambient temperature of the room). Your conscious mind is not aware of all this. Your brain has to filter out and leaves you with 0.00045% of the information that's coming in. The brain sees reality through a tiny pinhole of attention. It's the difference between reading a simple sentence or War and Peace twice every second. In order to make sense of all this data coming in, the brain has to see reality through a tiny pinhole of attention, just a tiny fraction of reality you're actually consciously aware of. The brain makes predictions based on our beliefs. How does the brain make sense of all this information? It has to make predictions, and those predictions are based on our beliefs. We call this predictive processing. Everything you experience, everything you see, everything you feel, and everything you're inspired to do is determined by the three powers of belief. The three powers of belief: The power of attention changes what you see The power of anticipation changes how you feel The power of agency changes what you do Limiting beliefs hide themselves. A limiting belief, by definition, is hidden because we think that what we see is accurate. We all think that what we experience is a fact. "I saw it for myself. I'm stating my truth. This is the way things are." But that's not true at all. The way the brain processes information is woefully inadequate to put that burden of truth on it. The Turnaround uses four questions to challenge limiting beliefs.  Is it true? Is it 100% absolutely true? Who am I when I hold onto this belief? Who would I be without this belief? Nir's story: "My mother is too judgmental and hard to please." Nir sent his mom flowers for her 74th birthday. She said, "Thank you very much. But just so you know, the flowers were half dead. Don't order from that florist again." Nir instantly became his 13-year-old self and blurted out, "Well, that's the last time I order you flowers again." Venting is terrible. It does nothing but reinforce your beliefs about people because not only do we not see reality clearly, we certainly don't see other people clearly. We see our beliefs about people. We don't see reality as it is. We see reality as we are. The Turnaround opened up new possibilities for Nir. In 30 seconds, he determined: (1) that belief may not be true, (2) it doesn't really serve him, and (3) there might be a better way to be. He could actually be happier without that belief. The brain hates changing its mind. The turnaround asks you to look at the diametric opposite of your belief. We have a psychological immune system. Just like if you get a splinter in your finger, your body will mount an immune defense. The same happens in our minds. The more you feel "that's crazy, I don't wanna think that way, that can't be true," the more you need to explore it. Nir found four beliefs instead of one: My mother is too judgmental and hard to please My mother is NOT too judgmental and hard to please (maybe she was just conveying information) I am too judgmental and hard to please (I had rehearsed a script of effusive praise I wanted) I am too judgmental and hard to please towards myself (I felt incompetent that the flowers didn't work out) "Beliefs are tools, not truths." This is the most important thing Nir can convey. Which one of those four beliefs is true? All of them. None of them. Who cares? Beliefs are tools, not truths. Facts, faith, and beliefs are three different things.  A fact is an objective truth about reality. It is so whether you believe it or not. The world is more like a sphere than it is flat. That is an objective fact.  Faith is a conviction that does not require evidence.  A belief is a conviction that is open to revision based on new evidence. Most problems come from thinking faith is a fact. Too many people think that their faith is a fact, and the things they think are facts are nothing more than beliefs, which are changeable. That's where most of our problems come from: interpersonal problems, personal problems, geopolitical problems. The original belief left Nir powerless. "My mom is too judgmental and hard to please" only has one way out: she has to change so I could be happy. Good luck. The other three beliefs, Nir could do something about. They were in his control. That enabled him. It freed him. It was liberating. Misattribution of emotion: hurt people hurt people. When we feel bad inside, if you've ever been bullied or been a bully yourself, this is always what happens. When you feel crappy on the inside, the first person you can find, you're going to punch him in the face, either physically or verbally, because you feel crappy. That's what Nir did to his mom because he felt bad. So now she should feel bad. How to handle narcissists: acknowledge they're operating with the best tools they have. That person is a narcissist? Awesome, because you don't have to be around them. But narcissists are operating from the best tools they have. It doesn't mean you have to include them in your life, but how do you stop suffering because of them? Acknowledge they are, and reduce your suffering around them. Nir called his mom and apologized. He said, "I'm so sorry for my behavior. I realize that you were trying to help me. You were conveying information about the flowers, so I wouldn't order from that florist. Thank you for that." That call completely changed their relationship. We expect people to change, but we can't even change ourselves. We can't do the simplest habits like eating better, exercising more, and managing our time. Why are we expecting other people to change? "Love is measured by the benefit of the doubt." When Nir's daughter was born, and he held her for the first time, he felt overwhelming adoration. Five minutes ago, she didn't exist, and now he loved her more than anything. He gave her complete, total benefit of the doubt. Why? She didn't do anything. She never sent him flowers. Babies poop, they need food all the time, they cry. But he never said, "she's crying to annoy me." We give babies the ultimate benefit of the doubt. Why don't we give adults the benefit of the doubt? When those babies grow up and become adults, we don't give them the benefit of the doubt. The narcissist in your life, the person who offends you, the person that hurts you, those are the best tools they have. It doesn't mean you have to be with them or include them in your life. The requirement is: how do you figure out how to stop suffering, to be at peace? We're constantly judging everything. Somebody cuts you off in traffic. Jerk. There's a line at the burrito place. The business thing didn't work out. The stock market goes down. Judging, judging, judging all day long. Good, bad, good, bad, good, bad. Expecting things to be different than they are. These are all limiting beliefs, and all they do is make us suffer. "We don't have relationship problems. We have belief problems." The problem is your belief that something should be different from what it is. It's like asking Nir's daughter to speak Russian. She can't speak Russian. What am I expecting? She doesn't have that ability. Why should I have expectations that people should meet my expectations? Nir and Julie now collaborate instead of argue. Since they started using the Turnaround technique, they used to have disagreements. Now they collaborate. If there's a very smart person, much smarter than Nir, who has an opinion, who he respects deeply and loves and admires, why would he fight with that person? He would collaborate with that person. Different perspectives are an asset to collect. If Nir sees things one way and Julie sees them differently, that's amazing. A new perspective. It's like collecting Pokémon cards. You've gotta get 'em all. Now with more perspectives, he can pick the best one. Writing sessions with Tim Urban, Shane Snow, and Mark Manson. Nir would work on his own and get distracted. But when he had other authors around him, they would sit down, write for 45 minutes, take a 15-minute break, write for 45 minutes, take a 15-minute break. They'd do that for three hours every morning. Not only is it inspiring, it keeps you on track. Find a focus friend. Somebody you can go to a coffee shop with and say, "I really need to focus. Let's keep each other accountable. Let's just work next to each other." Just like working side by side and seeing that other person also working on the stuff they should be working on keeps you accountable. Comparison is the thief of joy. Sometimes it can be tricky to be in a room with people who are super successful. Nir was the least successful author there at the time. You have to put it in perspective and know it's not about the outcome, it's about the journey. The best thing you can do is do the work. Time boxing is better than to-do lists. To-do lists are one of the worst things you can do for personal productivity because there's no constraint. You can always add more things to a to-do list. You come home from work every day and say, "I still have all these things I haven't done on my to-do list."  A time box calendar is the most well-researched time management technique. What's much more effective than a to-do list is planning out what you're going to do and when you're going to do it. This is called an implementation intention. The goal now becomes not to finish anything. The goal is to work on that task for as long as you said you would without distraction. Make time to do the work, to turn your values into time. That's the secret to avoiding comparison. You put in the time to do the work. When you have it on your calendar, the goal is doing the work, not finishing the work. Lucky people literally see reality differently. They did a study where they asked people who were self-described lucky or unlucky to count the number of photographs in a newspaper. The unlucky people took on average two and a half minutes. The lucky people took 11 seconds. Why? On page two, one of the images said in big, bold text, "There are 43 images in this paper. Collect your prize." The unlucky people never saw it. Their brains took in the information, but it never became part of their conscious awareness. Entrepreneurs see $100 bills on the ground when everybody's walking over them. That is driven by beliefs. You believe you can will things to change. Walter Isaacson, in his biography of Steve Jobs, talked about his reality distortion field. That's exactly what this is. Entrepreneurs tend to be way more optimistic. They believe that lucky things happen to them, and so they see opportunities. "With our luck, it's going to be a bright, beautiful, sunny day." So many people say "with my luck" and follow it with something bad or negative. This belief and mindset of saying "with our luck" followed by something extremely positive is contagious and enjoyable. "Everything good happens to us." Nir's family says this whenever something good happens. There's no line at the TSA. "Everything good happens to us." The food was good. "Everything good happens to us." Little things, big things. Do more good things happen to them than bad things? Maybe, maybe not. Who cares? Beliefs are tools, not truths. When you believe those things, you notice them more. Your life actually does seem magical, blessed, like you're always lucky. 60% of opportunities are provoked luck. They studied super successful entrepreneurs and VCs and found that 60% of their opportunities provoked luck. They provoked the lucky thing that happened. How? Something as simple as sending a note of gratitude. Never hold back on a compliment. They're free. You get so much back from them. Thank you notes create provoked luck. Tina Seelig writes thank you notes compulsively. She wrote a thank you note to somebody. The thank-you note landed on someone's desk. You're sitting at your desk with things to do, and here's a thank you note, and to the right is your laptop with an email about a new opportunity. Who is going to get the call about that opportunity? You're top of mind. "Ryan's such a nice guy. He sent me that note. I'm going to call Ryan about that opportunity." Changing Nir's relationship with his mom changed his relationship with his daughter. Love is measured by the benefit of the doubt. When Nir started giving his daughter the benefit of the doubt, it pushed him to figure it out with his mom because he needed to give her the benefit of the doubt as he would want his daughter to give him the same. He's doing his best. He's not perfect. He makes mistakes. Those are the tools he's got.  You go from loving your kid to liking them. Nir and his daughter went skiing together for his birthday. The entire three hour car ride up, the entire three-hour car ride back, they were chatting. They wrote an article together in the car. You always love your kid. As soon as your kid's born, you love them. But if you do your job right and things fall into place and you're very lucky, you like them. And that's a game changer. Reflection Questions What limiting belief are you holding onto where someone else has to change? What are three other ways to look at that same situation that would put the control back in your hands? Are you treating your beliefs like facts or like tools? Which beliefs are you holding because they're true, and which ones are you holding because they serve you? Who in your life are you not giving the benefit of the doubt? What would change if you gave them some grace?
